"Like, hey, I have an opening, I'm gonna go for the quarterback. Well, that's not actually the best thing 'cause guess what? Josh Allen's gonna run for 50 yards if I do that. So I understand Christian bar war making those errors and it's not an indictment on him. But guys like Matthew judon and von gotcha, who they gave a lot of money to. You know, those guys can not play on their own and do their own thing. And I think earlier on in the season, they were doing the right thing. They were playing within the scheme of the defense, and I think that combined with the turnovers, which you didn't see Mac early on in the season to me, the reason for the turnovers later in the season. And I think he has 6 turnovers in his last four games, including the fumble. Has to do with, you know, being a little mentally fried. It's been a long, long process. There's a reason why you don't see rookie quarterbacks even lead their teams to super bowls. Forget about winning one. It's hard and now it's 17 games, plus pre season and all that stuff. It's very hard. So to me, they are. There are different team than they were early in the season as part of the reason why I don't think they're going to be successful on Saturday night unless Josh Allen just completely vomits on himself, which people knowing me. I would be chuckling at and be being very, I would be very happy about that. So we'll see what happens. Not as cold, inclement weather, but just a couple weeks ago against Atlanta. He threw three interceptions. So. Yep. So you're going to be a cold night in Buffalo kick-off 8 15 Saturday night patriots bills. Greg, I think we, I think we emptied the tank here. I think we've got pretty much everything out there as far as what we're going to expect in this game. Good stuff. And you didn't even, you know, as a young rookie, you know, at least you didn't turn the ball over in this podcast unlike some other rookies around here. So you held onto the ball. Maybe that's a good sign for Matt, come Saturday night. That's going to do it for the Greg bedard patriots podcast, writing glasheen and for Nick cattle. Of course, brought to you by bet online AG. "We, as we go here against the dolphins and in the postseason look, remember, let's go back to where this team started the season, and everybody freaking out about the wide receivers. What do they have? You know, agile or hopefully we'll be back at some point. But this remember, this is still a too tight end team. This is one running back too tight ends or two backs and two tight ends one ride receiver whatever. It's a very receivers are not the focal point of this offense. And so there are limited snaps in any event, I think that Kendrick Bourne certainly has rebounded from his COVID stint where he said that that was giving him issues. He looks a lot better. He certainly one of the more valuable guys they have on the team. Jacoby is not going anywhere. And so could I see wilkerson fitting into that three or four role if they need be? Yes, certainly. And the thing about wilkerson is that he's also good on special teams, so a lot of the little things that people want to say that Nikhil Harry does well like his quote unquote blocking. Walker shouldn't do that. He's a big, strong kid. And so it would not surprise me in the least if that's the last we've seen of Nikhil Harry and her patriot uniform. Barring injury. Hey Greg, just one thing with Christian wilkerson, we've gotten a lot of calls today with people thinking, hey, is this the guy that could get involved the deep threat? If you know about him, he played in the Ohio, Ohio valley conference, like small school, he latched on with the Titans. They really liked him, released from the Pats picked them up. He's been here for a bit. Drops seem to be his biggest thing, but if he is that fourth receiver, can he block? Is that something he can do? Because we've seen the killer Harry out there a lot. We give him credit for doing it. Is it something Christian? Wilkerson can do if he has to be on the field for it? Yeah. He's a big, he's a big, strong kid. And to answer people's questions, no, he's not sort of any answer to anything. The most he's probably going to be as a three or four wide receiver or a 5th wide receiver in the NFL who contributes on special teams. You know, you're absolutely right during the training camp and the preseason very inconsistent. He would look like a world beater one practice and couldn't catch a cold, the next practice. He's a good guy to have around, you know, seems to know what he's doing. It looked like he adjusted to some play calls really well today, even anticipated a few checks and alerts by Mac Jones. So I think he fits into what they do, but, you know, look, it's, you know, if healthy, it's Jacoby Myers, Nelson Aguilar, Kendrick Bourne, and then sort of wilkerson and Gunnar chef ski. You know, I look at that as their sort of their 5 man unit right now and I think Nikhil Harry is on the outside looking in and you know I would say it's more likely than not unless he shows up on Wednesday in his world beater and practice that he could be an active for the rest of the way here. "At the ballpark, both during the season and even extending into the postseason, there is definitely, you know, more, I would say 20 somethings involved. It stands to reason that those people are going to be louder and more energetic than an older crowd or a corporate crowd. So that's contributed to it as well. Yeah, and I'm gonna add a fourth one. I think the current climate in Boston sports has people really starved for a winner in a good story. You've had a couple of years of patriots struggles. The Celtics were an underachieving kind of mopey team last year. So I think being able to embrace a team like the Red Sox who are true underdogs who seem to genuinely like one another who seemed to like playing this game in front of these fans and have really shown it time and again, just with that kind of comeback kids sort of attitude is really refreshing at a time where they're just aren't a lot of great options. I mean, the bruins are obviously I think a team that fits that model as well. But the Red Sox are here on the cusp on the precipice of getting to a World Series and getting to play for a title. I don't think anybody expected that at all. So I think that's a really big one, too. Yeah, no question. You know, this is sort of playing with found money at this point. I think that was somewhat true when they beat the Yankees as long as they got past the potential horror of having their season finished with a one game playoff at home to their arch rivals. Then I think fans began to embrace this team as something of an underdog. And that feels funny to say when you think about the resources, the Red Sox have as an organization. But probably most fans didn't have a great feeling about the chances going into the division series matched against the rays, put the payroll issues aside, the raised dominated them during the season. They finished 8 games in front of them during the regular season in the standings. And yet the Red Sox figured out a way to have a couple of walk off wins at home and sent Tampa Bay home, and now there's this momentum that's gathering. And yeah, I think some of it has to do with the struggles, the Patriots have. There's a bandwagon effect here with, well, maybe this team that we hadn't expected to be in position to do so might be the team closest to winning a championship of the four majors in Boston. And I think people are happy to even if you're on the bandwagon, they're happy to be on it and happy to be at the park so the next three nights. And we are guaranteed three games are gonna be a lot of fun. So again, make sure you follow Sean mcadam and everything that he writes and tweets over at Boston sports journal. "Boston sports journal, Greg bedard and Greg, I guess the morning after question on the Patriots 25 to 6 win over the jets. Was it a good winner or a bad win? It was a win. I would not say it was a good win. I mean, look, when the opponent are rebuilding opponent, gives you four interceptions before even the halfway point in the third quarter. And you need to basically make some defensive stands in the fourth quarter to win that game. It's not a good one. It's just not. And I don't know why people are trying to talk themselves into it. It wasn't. I mean, a lot of the stuff that they had issues with in week one from past protection, stopping the run getting off the field in key points. I mean, they got a little bit better at that. But in general, there was a little bit of improvement incremental overall, not with the run defense, I thought it was, I thought it was worse in this game. The jets almost averaged almost 5 yards of carry. And really, if they just stuck to the ground, they probably would have been in this game till the very end. But no, I did not think it was a good win. It was a win that it was a win that they needed to get. They got it. What's not right home about it? Yeah. I guess in addition to the things that you mentioned with the run defense, the protection, obviously, was was rough. And the trend Brown injury certainly is a huge deal. They start one tackle. They have to yank him, you know, Durant there early in the first half, just because things weren't going well. It just seemed like Mac was never able to get comfortable in the pocket. I guess the question is, how much of it was on game planning? How much of it was on personnel limitations, whether it be down a tackle or getting to know the receivers where it's just still, you're not able to open things up. I guess as you wrote in your column for Boston sports journal Greg, everyone's got to be a little bit patient. And I think that's the problem is nobody is patient. You want to see them open it up. And it's not just to get to where you were in the best days of Tom Brady where the offense could just march up and down the field and score. I think even seeing what you saw from Mac Jones in week one, gave you enough confidence to think, okay, they can do a little more than they're doing here. And you can see it almost felt like a step back offensively where, I mean, just yards per attempt. Everything was even more conservative than it was in week one. In a game where you've felt like they might have been able to open it up a little bit..

Robert Kraft Gives Honest Assessment of Patriots Drafting

"Heard from Robert Kraft yesterday was a man who was completely honest about where the the team is in a lot of different areas. I wouldn't will get into this but I don't think his quarterback comments were Something to really weigh in heavily on but I do think that overall I mean him talking about, you know, the draft specifically the personality just sound thrilled with having to Shell out as much money as he did and he basically admitted that the only reason they had to do that cuz they didn't draft well in recent years and and he committed what a lot of us have said where it's not sustainable to do that. You need the draft to be the lifeblood of your team so that you can do other things like you can't just every three years song ten free agents. It just it it's probably not going to happen be it's not economically feasible. And so I thought it was very refreshing for Robert to to talk to the assemblage yesterday and and really be honest and I think you know in judging from the comments at Boston Sports Journal com from my column off of this press conference wage. Think on a whole I thought the Patriots the Patriots fans reacted very well to it that are really like, okay. Well, at least now we know that the person in charge realizes is a isn't happy about it called last season horrible and B thinks that the team has made correction and is moving in the right direction. That's all anybody ever wanted to to hear from anybody at at one page place and they heard it from Craft and I think it made Patriot Nation breathe a little bit easier. Not that they weren't confident in Bill Belichick rebounding in any event, but I just think it reinforced that. All right. Well, we're still the Patriots thought we had a we had an off-year didn't go well we're going to correct things were going to get things back on track.

Is Cam Newton Ready to be Patriots Quarterback?

"The biggest question of all and of course, I'm talking about Cam Newton Cam Newton ready to be the quarterback for this team or false pause, as of today. It's false and I wrote a column this weekend for Boston Sports Journal, that basically laid out and I'm talking to different people both around the team and also around the league about where Cam is and there's three things that need to go on Nick and it needs to go on now and it needs to go on every day off of the day until the season kicks off and number one. It's cam has to lose weight. He can't he can't play a 250 anymore. He's not a young buck. We saw dead. You know, I thought this but it was confirmed by a couple of NFL people that I I talked to and I trust they said that cams legs got heavier as the season went on and off and run as much he wasn't as a as Elusive and the big thing is not only that but your legs are everything when you throw the ball, if you don't have your legs which you did earlier in the season, they threw the ball a little bit better. If you don't have your legs then you have nothing as far as power and things like that and also just accuracy if you don't have your legs then you have to compensate upper body and things just get all out of whack and that's what happened. When cam last year. So in cam I will give him credit on the I am athlete podcast. He did say, I think he was trying to lose ten pounds. I'd go less. I think he needs to get to 3235. I think that gives them a better chance to be sustainable. He doesn't he doesn't need to be 2:50 to run over linebackers anymore. There aren't that many linebackers that are 2:50 a.m. Should be in a business and his age are going to be 32 a plow on those guys over. So there's that there is he has to get into he he has a he has to get with her own coach. I hope he's working with one but he better be working on one that works on his mechanics all the time every day. Get back to where he was at the beginning of last season get it out of her system because he needs to learn how to just be able to flick the ball. Ten yards instead of making a whole body convulsion just to get the ball out in the last thing is the biggest thing Nick and we've talked about it. I thought is he needs he needs Express 24-hour premium tutoring on the Patriots Playbook and what goes on as far as all right. If the defense does this then I can change to this and what's my audible what's my check because I know everybody's all excited about Johnny Smith and Hunter Henry and you know, we you can also factor in The athletic fullbacks that they've wanted to have for two years. Dan Vitality is coming back supposedly and also they dropped adult and Keen to play that position because there's a choice that they want to be more like the 49ers with use checked. And so it's all nice and dandy that they have two tight ends and athletic fullback and people are absolutely right to say that benefit of that is you get match up issues where all right, if it's safety then we're just going to run over them if their linebackers then we're just going to run past them. We're going to throw the ball. That is great and all but it doesn't mean Jack if you don't have a quarterback who can't see the defense see what's going on check to the right play and take advantage of the defense and last year cam wasn't even close to that. So unless all those things happen and he's not there at this point. He is not ready to be the starting quarterback for the for the Patriots. Do I think he can get there and be better? Yeah, but we'll have to see.

For the Patriot the Patriots easy for me to say the Patriots in this game gray. Okay, so I'm going to give you real quick offensively and I don't know which one it is. Sorry and I don't want to say don't think eighteen because it could be an active again. But but if you did in that guy caught six passes you would look like a damn genius. I know and you know, I don't mind looking like at the end, but I thought I don't have any inside info but I'm just going to say one of the rookie tight ends or both of them. It could be Devin asiasi. I think they might see what he did last week and he got open a few times even though I don't think he was Dynamic at all in the passing game. I was a little bit underwhelmed by that but I would really if there was a game for them and sort of the idea. I think we've talked about it before song the idea with Dalton..

"By the way. I took an easy. I took an early pick at the Patriots line, you know that their favorite they opened as a six and half Point favorite over the Raiders is a little heavy. So make sure you head over there get your bets in I know I'll be doing ma'am. Cuz I'm starting I'm starting to get a little bit better feel for this NFL season at the first couple of weeks. So it's time to get the vets in make sure Boston Sports journal. And by the way, make sure when you're logged into this podcast when you're done to rate and review us. All right, so let's talk about this defense. Now, I'm not too concerned about the secondary. I think there's still a very good secondary grave, you know, sometimes you gotta tip your cap to a guy like Russell Wilson who made three great throws while getting hit in the throat a d k Metcalf was a perfect bucket throw the throat of more who made it terrific catch and kept his feet and Bounds was another great throw in the throat or Chris Carson putting enough are underneath that as he's getting the pass rush in his face. That's so great quarterback making a couple of great through the biggest issue seem to be at least to me and I read some of your stuff to earlier this week was in the middle of the field and at linebacker and I'll tell you Bentley looks like a game. Is running through mud out there and it was clear as day. That speed is going to be an issue. Yeah. Now there's this we could spend a whole podcast talking about their faith interesting but there's one thing that I want to point out to people that might make them feel a little bit better. I'm not sure but when I watched the defense particularly and I'm talking about the passing defense because we know about the secondary and we know Gilmore has not gotten off to a good start to the season. I mean basically he's going to be in my bottom three probably for a second straight week, you know defense Supply the Year mister five million dollars is going to be in the bottom three for Patriots when I go on failure and mass this week, but what do you get concerned about that by the way, because we have the backstory. We have the same story that Belichick, you know, you had this he wasn't necessarily against the idea of trading Gilmour and yep..

All right moving on to the Patriots week to Thursday coming up against the Seattle Seahawks week one the Cam Newton show first chance to see him in a Patriots uniform certainly a successful debut. He was terrific on the ground seventy-five yards rushing and two rushing touchdown. In the air a bit of mixed bag and Greg Bedard would like to see some improvements moving forward. I thought the cam at the end of day. I think he completed like 79% of his passes. You know, I wouldn't say they were first of all, they weren't very high degree of difficulty. I think when went and I graded my graded the film and of course failure loves to nice. I have my chart out get the dog. I don't think I had him for a plus throw in the game because I didn't think any of them were that tough. I thought that the one really tough throw was more of an element catch over the middle then a great Newton throw. I thought Edelman kind of bailed him out. I thought that there were a couple of high passes including the Edelman drop. Yes. It was a drop but it also was he was wide open in the middle of field. He had to leave his feet. I'm not saying that Edelman shouldn't have that that it was Newton's fault. No Edelman should have caught the ball. He should have but dead. Past should have been better. And then there was another throw to element in the flat where it was high and Edelman took an unnecessary blow in in. Those are the type of throws. You do get with Cam and it's something to monitor going forward. That's just when he misses he misses high and those passes could turn into turnovers. They could turn into injuries for some of them receivers and tight ends..

"You a hell of a deal and also Boston Sports Journal that we'll also they'll also hook you up. There you go. Boston Sports channel, as always. All right big picture here, you know, I've been seeing stuff Greg all over the interwebs the last few days about this team, you know, bleacherreport.com Eating them. I think it was Nineteen as a staff in the NFL you go back to the ESPN football power index. They had the Patriots around 9 or 10 in the league as far as a playoff hopes and overall ranking. Is this a playoff team? You pretty confident there a playoff team. Are you kind of wavering? What do you thinking going in here? Absolutely. I I to me there is little doubt that they took our playoff with 9 mm with you a hundred percent. Yep. Yeah. I mean, I don't know what sure it's not, you know, it's not your older cousins Patriots team, you know, it's going to look a whole lot different but change can be good and and look at the look. They have a great secondary you have a they have a could be a great offensive line. They should be able to run the ball. I was actually texting with my crease earlier today. We were talking about some stuff and I said, you know I said this team this team needs to rush for three thousand yards this year and month. the Ravens set the record, I think it was last year or two years ago. They said it at about thirty four hundred yards. I think at the Patriots get to the upper ranges of you know, 2829 hundred. I think I think they're on course to have a successful season. They're going to need have the lead they are going to need to play good defense, but you also have one of the best coaching staffs in the league. And yes, there's there hasn't been a lot of continuity on offense. They're going to have work through some things but so is everybody else. I mean everybody else is as in the same bucket and while I don't think Bill Belichick is invaluable. He's pretty damn good at what he does and I have a lot of confidence in what he does. There are two people I never bet against Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and Tom Brady's gone, but Belichick is still here. So I have a lot of confidence said and also Nick the other thing is, you know, what do you think the divisions going to do? Yes, Buffalo is going to be good. You know, we'll see how far Josh Allen can take him. I'd rather have Cam Newton dog. Josh Allen, but that's me the Dolphins speak to that's me to the Dolphins have had a ton of changes in their front seven and other places that's going to be a work-in-progress the Jets of the Jets. "But you know, you know, maybe Lamar Miller's chomping at the bit and off. Of a sudden if the Patriots don't and basically the rule is you come off pup as soon as you pass your physical and so if Lamar Miller's agent in Lamar Miller thought that he was healthy enough to pass physical they could file a grievance with the league and it could get messy and so it's the Patriots don't really have the ultimate Choice really the ultimate choice is with the player and she must have you have felt ready to go and and you know, so it was a little bit of a surprise but I do think it I think it complicates things as far as roster cut down cuz now Jake Harris is down for a week or two. Now. What do you do? You keep Lamar Miller and that access somebody else at another position. When you looking to be talking about behind the scenes when you look at your 53, I mean, the ultimate question is Muslim our Miller. Does he have a spot? Does he have a place on this team right now? On my final fifty-three, which I just finished. I'll be right enough for bsj. I do not have them on the team. I have running backs on the team. Yep. I have Sony Jake white Harrisburg head as the four running backs My Hope and this will also be something that will probably talk about at some point My Hope Is that veterans? Like say Brian Hoyer a call back which I ultimately decided to release him to steal a spot for others on the roster that Brian Hoyer Lamar Miller, maybe some other veterans agree to come back on the practice squad. I protect them every week and then all of a sudden you have a built-in taxi Squad they're going to have to do a lot of selling. I think I think teams across the league with these new rules with the cobit. They're going to do a lot of selling where they come to these players and they say look, I know I know this hurts right now. I know you probably thought you weren't a spot you probably did but this is a numbers game right now, and we want to park you on the practice squad. Because we're going to need you. We it's just one of those years. Yeah, and you know, the cobit circumstances the quarterback thing is very interesting. We've heard guys like Bruce Arians and others talk about maybe quarantining a quarterback just in case because the quarterback room guys are close to each other. You don't know how Covetous going to affect it. Now with all of that said Greg the evidence in front of us right now is that the truck was doing a great job with covid-19. You're looking at Camp who has the injury history instead of who was dealing with an injury. Just going back a few days ago. Yeah, it is. It's it's going to be a similar situation in when they they were last year where they were probably confident that nobody was going to claim Brian Hoyer or sign him and then all of a sudden the Colts came out of nowhere near you know part of it had to do with the Andrew Luck thing. I don't think and you know, what's helping in this situation with a Brian Hoyer as opposed to years prior is that there have been open choosing games? So there haven't been any injuries at quarterback across the league. We're normally, you know, we've lost about you know, four or five quarterbacks by an hour, you know, at least backup quarterback things like that and preseason games. And.

"I don't think he re-signs with New England because New England was not going to go the two years and everything that I read Brady was more upset about the lack of a commitment from that team and Belichick most notably. That's why he left so I don't think Belichick was going to give him the kind of contract at Tampa stepped up and gave him and good for Tampa, but also good for Belichick. I don't think Belichick should have extended himself two years for a guy who's 43 years old for as great as Brady has been at some point. You've got to cut it off and be responsible to the organization. I think Brady wage Get paid for what he had done versus what he was going to do. So I have no issue with Belichick saying no, we're not going to give you the two years in Tampa. Listen Bruce Arians. He had to do what he do. Right? That's a that's an organization that has consistently they needed somebody and you can see it. You know, we're going to get into the Leonard fournette stuff. But you know, that's the trickle-down effect of bringing somebody in like Brady. Nobody was dying to go Tampa before Brady thier one last thing about the wide receiver situation Greg. We talked about it over a text last night. It seems to me that the timing is not going to be great for the Patriots to try acquire somebody from outside organization. Maybe a Curtis Samuel some people think he is available. He has that link with Cam from his Carolina days, but what about the evaluating of the position and where the Patriots are at now? I mean when you look back Belichick's history with evaluating wide receivers. Yeah, he hit on Edelman he hit on Branch he hit on Mitchell. Unfortunately the knee stopped his career. He hit on evaluating West Palm. And you could even give them credit for David Givens. But when you look at it, most guys that he brings into play that position to be a one or two guy. They haven't worked out, correct. Yeah, and and you know, I don't know how much blame to give him. I mean obviously he gets some of it it's his show. I do think part of it has to do with them, you know sort of the transition from college to Pro, you know, but some people will argue that it's never been easier to identify wide receivers coming out of college because they throw so much now I saw how many wide receivers went in the draft this year. How many went in the first couple of rounds and of course the Patriots just sat out and didn't take one in the draft so long..

"Remember mentioned my name Greg Bedard to get your bonus speaking of betting. I wonder if we should place a bet on Cam Newton doing a very good job with this offense this year because I keep reading stuff Greg and everything. I read and a lot of it is from you at Boston. Journal.com Ball Sports channel, you know a lot of it is the passing game just down there the passing offense just isn't there the running offense the Run game seems to have at least some optimism behind a Damien Harris who will try to get into a little bit later on this first episode of the Greg Bedard Patriots podcast off the cattle's, but when you when look at this quarterback play would you say right now at this juncture less than two weeks before they kick off a game that really means something or about to walk away. Are you concerned about the quarterback play right now? Am I concerned? Yeah. Yeah, I guess it's fair to say I will say and I sort of coined it on Boston Sports Journal, last weekend. When I sort of gave you you know, the inside scoop on the offense and what they they're feeling about it. Yeah. They're they're going to be playing Bully ball from this. Is there a site about the physicality that they are going to have. I mean, I think more of the Titans last year, you know, they don't exactly have Derrick Henry in the backfield. But I mean, they don't have that Bumper in the back field. But yeah, but they do and Cam Newton. They do have a thumper like it, you know, so I mean you're talking six foot five two hundred fifty pounds just to load you have an offensive line that I could tell you as look tremendous this year. I've been told that these guys have a chip on their shoulder about how bad they played last year and they let women or cuz I've heard about him and I read from birth. Multiple people that he he's looked good at right tackle and I even read this week. I think it was from Evan Lazar that he thinks he might actually end up being better than what Canon was last year. He's looked you know that good at Camp so far. Yeah. I said the same thing I said, think I think when all said and done he might be a an upgrade over Cannon and I will tell you I you know from people that I've talked to in fact, I'm not I'm not the biggest Jermaine eluemunor fan. I didn't I don't know what our fan club guy. Well, I he I will tell you he's played great this training camp. He really has and you know, I always shoot straight with people about what I see and even guys that I'm not crazy about if they're playing well, I'll tell you right and you know, you know what you're going to get it processed for sure, You're going to get that all the time but you know in terms of I know a lot of people at the Ravens he was with the Ravens they traded them to the Patriots when they traded him at the time they were done with them. This was a guy who they they were giving a starting opportunity to age. They wanted him to be you know a starter for them. Yeah, and he just didn't answer the Bell. They were ticked off. They were like we're done with this guy. He doesn't look like he wants to be there in the preseason. He'll like that for them. But.

"He showed up all the time. He was like Jerry stood his like favorite quarterback and even when students have been out there. He hasn't really looked his way all that much and yep. You think he's a good player. I think he's worked developing. I would like to keep him on the team. But again, I think it's you're looking at Mohamed Sanu Devon Ross Jacoby Myers and Jeff Thomas. I have two for you have for for two spots and I'm going with the new and Devon Ross right now because I think Devon Ross is really the only legitimate other option package X boundary receiver, even though he's not the biggest guy in the world. He does play well out there. He can backup n'keal Harry and spell him and sort of, you know, Harry needs a kick in the ass. They don't do that, but I would say it's the for me it's the receivers that I'm having the toughest time with and it's really going to be it's going to be up to Bill what he wants for this team. And and you know, is he willing to swallow that second round pick to recover six and a half million dollars considering the cap crunch next year he could do that because that's how the six and half million on next year's cap. Yeah probably worth about twenty years. Million in real money next year. Yeah and the Patriots right now. They're in great shape when you look at the cap. So we're going to look at quarterbacks in whether or not Greg is concerned about quarterback play. Am I concerned about what I've read about quarterback play, but before that I'm and Greg is going to remind us about bet us. Oh, yeah. Definitely Nick this this place is I go there all the time to place my bets and actually we should talk about this at some point, but they have options over under at 9. I saw really really I'm hitting me over,.

"We're pro Gunner and I'm also the last spot among the receivers I gave to Devin moss in in it's a tough. It's a tough competition between Ross Jacoby Myers Jeff Thomas the undrafted Speedster out of Miami. I know they love a speed. It is real speed off as opposed to I think damiere Byrd speed is kind of a little over-hyped. He's a little an hour you were writing earlier. I believe it was either this week saying, you know, he's got speed but it does not work. Necessarily translate to in game on the field speed if you can get into that just a little bit more with bird cuz I think a lot of people look at them and it's always going to take the top off the defense. You haven't really seen a lot of examples that Greg, right? Yeah. Yeah, it's it's true and and he's a guy that I studied on film once they signed him. I was impressed. I basically I mean in and I asked the question I think when woke up and my you know free agent film review of him was is it going to be Phillip Dorsett is he or is he more toward Brandon Brooks, right? Brandin Cooks. Sorry, you know in Cooks wage isn't the greatest receiver in the world, but the dude can fly and get down the field Phillip Dorsett times well, but it's not real speed. It's he doesn't use his speeds after watching damiere Byrd and I heard a lot from around the Patriots about bird about how fast he was about how he was going to be a factor as far as the speed and I gotta tell you through Thursday. About two weeks of practice I have doubts about how real a speed is. I think he's trending more. I think he's he's better than Phillip Dorsett and I think he plays a little bit faster. But in terms of is he Brandin Cooks or is he or is he Phillip Dorsett? I'm training more towards Dorset. I never there was a play in in a practice this week. I think it was against my name is Brian. Who's okay, he's not going to make the team but he just I never see bird getting any distance on anybody. He doesn't get any separation down the field and that's what he's there for and I just had seen it. All right, let's jump to the defensive side of the football now because as part of your 53, I found it interesting deatrich wise right now to you is staying on this team you've talked about him in the past about possibly him being somebody they could trade try to bring something back as far an asset now after the first couple of weeks watching him in Camp Greg, you're actually saying know they're going to keep them. Think they should keep them on the team. Why is that? Yeah. Well, I mean Dietrich wise is a guy who I love is first his first training camp. I kind of blew him up about four practices and I thought he was the real deal and he has, you know, he's doing a good good Pro and he hasn't quite gone to the next level, but I I thought he would but the deal with that is is it's not about him about the scheme changed when when he was a rookie. They were more of a 4-3. He would play Russian sub he could kick inside, you know as a sub rusher and that was sort of thing when the Patriots started the past couple of years training more towards a 3/4 front instead of being an outside linebacker for the team..

"As I say, you can find us on Twitter or Facebook. We're asking you about the loud statements made in this divisional round of the playoffs. And we're asking you to take our poll for Monday MVP at went back. And I made a flow chart I stink at art. I can't draw stick figure with a ruler. But I do like to make stars and rectangles and sometimes little bubbles around key stats or keynotes. It it to me significant that of the four winners this weekend. Team rushing yards were off the charts. Do you know the team that rush for the fewest number of yards was the saints only using my air quotations one hundred thirty seven yards rushing and think about it. The eagles had a weaker secondary that did get exploited. Some by the Chicago Bears and they were behind early by two scores. Meaning drew Brees needed to throw the ball for them to find some momentum and pick up some yards quickly. So early on they weren't committed to the run as much, but they still finished up with one hundred and thirty seven yards rushing. That's the saints. The patriots powered by Sony Michelle one hundred fifty five yards rushing DR. Remember the question marks about the patriots running game and their commitment to the running game member. Michelle was injured for a while. He's banged up. And they weren't running the ball nearly as much now James white in my opinion. Maybe the patriots MVP the season. He's extremely versatile. He did not. If I could go back and look really quickly at the box score. But I'm pretty sure he did not have any carries on this game. Instead he was all completely about the catches, but fifteen of them. So a lot of times, and I talked about this with Christopher price who joined us in the first hour from Boston. He covers the patriots for the Boston sports journal, very often the patriots. In addition to running the ball in this game. They use that short passing game. The slants the crossing routes allied times. There are picks that are set by fellow receivers that short run game the dinks and doing says, I call them or actually the Dink and dunks. Don't get stuck in my head from all the stupid doing that. We have. The first weekend of the playoffs. So all of those short patterns, and they're run by Julian Edelman there certainly run by James white of times, Chris HOGAN has filled that role those also simulated passing game because a lot of its stuff is underneath. And so even when the pats don't have a run game. Did I say they stimulated passing game? Sorry, I'm going to say they stimulator run game. Even when the pats don't necessarily have the guys to run the ball like they do now. That's how Brady gets rid of an early keeps from getting hit at there happens to be a tough pass rush or a good group of run staffers on the other side. And so they kept the chargers off balance the entire game. Just the way they started out methodical officiant again mixing in pass and run. It's all those surgical at times at its definitely cold blooded. Now, nobody wins the game on the first drive. But the way that they went to work goodness. The chargers. While they were in that seven defensive back set. The patriots knew exactly how to attack it and it worked to perfection early on. It's after hours Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. Patriots had never scored touchdowns on their first four possessions in a playoff game despite their storied history. First time they've ever scored on the first four possessions all touchdowns for the patriots finish up with one hundred and fifty five yards rushing. Then the chiefs now keep in mind they lost their top running back. Once they found out. He lied about his his off season transgressions. But they still ended up with a hundred eighty yards rushing. Against that colts defense. Do you know the colts have not mistaken, actually, Chris you can look that. But I'm pretty sure the colts hadn't allowed one hundred yard rusher. All season long. That was one of the things that they did really well, and here's Damian Williams hundred twenty nine yards and a score. Here are the cheese a hundred and eighty yards as a team rushing the football. And then finally the astronaut Michael numbers for the Rams tell me this. When you think about the Los Angeles Rams, do you really think they're a rushing team? No, you think about Jared Goff. You'd think about Sean McVeigh, you think about the aggressiveness in the high flying high octane weapons that they've got you think oh, they're a run team run. I. No, you think about Robert woods and Brandin cooks. You think about girly while he did. In fact, have was seventeen rushing touchdowns this year. In the regular season. He also had three through the air. But you think about the fact that he's versatile and can hurt you a variety of ways. You don't look at the Rams like a ground and pound ball control team. And yet they beat the Cowboys at their own game. One hundred seventy yards rushing at half two hundred seventy three yards rushing for the game phenomenal. And so it's not a mistake. That we ended up with multiple running backs in our latest Monday MB people. We went back and forth on the cheese MVP, and we decided not Damian Williams, though, he was really impressive. We decided to go with the duo of Justin Houston and d Ford. They put a lot of pressure on Andrew luck. Luck out sacked three times. But he was under pressure. A lot more than that. And this is not something the colts have had to deal with all season long. And so d Ford and Justin Houston. We're a pain in his rear end. They combined for six tackles. Three sacks four tackles for loss. And then another five quarterback hits. They were menaces to the Colt society, but monsters for the chiefs and feeding off that energy in Casey. And as I mentioned, it's been a long time for Kansas City. Anybody wanna know what Andy Reid has to say about how it's their first home playoff victory since nineteen Ninety-three all of that can be blamed on Andy Reid. But. Last year's twenty point collapsed against the titans. Sure can be caught up and all that. History. I love history because it makes you better. You learn from it and you move forward. And so that's that was important thing for our guys. Get caught up on all the stuff that happened in the past. But there's something you can learn from the play before the game before let's let's make even greater than you already are your one out of thirty two and the National Football League. Just make make yourself better. I love that. I love the fact that he says I'm not into history unless it makes us better. Oh, I kind of feel like a twenty point collapse at home would be the perfect motivation for getting better. Eight five five two one two four two two seven that's eight five five two one two four CBS. Let's talk to Mike in Atlanta. Welcome to after hours CBS sports radio. Yeah. Good morning, Amy. I really look forward to your knowledge on a Monday morning after another great NFL weekend. Oh, thank you so much really know what you're talking about. I appreciate it. I had to call and compliment you on the allergy may between Julian Elleman and fish, exactly. He'll take even the hook him. He'll take all online off your real keep going. Yeah. Yeah. And the fact is even when you think you've got him like, I can remember try to grab a fish who's obviously still alive and fighting for everything he's worth with both hands, and that thing will wriggle and twist, and you know, he's flopping his tail and he's jerking his head all around. He's not giving up until he has no breath left. But I tell you what maybe you should make a cameo Miami dolphin uniform before they let him retire. Maybe he'd make a good dolphin. The I don't know that the patriots are actually I shouldn't say that Bill Belichick is heartless if he's decided that joy element has run. Its course he will in fact allow him to go anywhere else. Maybe he could go the way of Danny amendola, and they they certainly could face them inefficient uniform. Right. Right right again. Thank you. I get out of your early do lift three AM. I appreciate you doing that bridge between another great NFL weekend. And no work other reality of the work day. Oh, you know. I feel. Yeah. I feel the manic Monday myself, Mike, thank you so much for your phone, call you welcome. All right. Just a couple of things to follow up with. Yes. I was correct. Always go with your first answer the colts did not allow a one hundred yard rusher in the regular season. And so to give up a hundred eighty yards total, but one hundred twenty nine hundred and it was something like one hundred twenty nine Damian Williams. There's a lot of numbers in my head. That shows you again the way that the chiefs were able to make some room. And honestly if you look at the four division winners and think about the run stats. It goes to those battles in the trenches. And how well the offense lines played for the chiefs. The Rams the patriots and even the saints. Eat is a fantastic weapon to be able to to offer a balanced attack. To be multidimensional. Another thing all of these winners have in common. They spread the ball around. Receptions for ten different guys nine or ten different guys on the saints roster. We know the Tom Brady does that all the time hit six seven eight different guys on a drive. The chiefs. Okay, they only through to five guys. But a hallmark is balance and spreading the ball around. Because that way the defense doesn't know what you're going to do. You keep that Diaw balance you dictate instead of react. You don't let the defense dictate to you..

"Forty five in for Doug, Russell at the judge a Bank sports desk. It's brian. Thanks, gene. Josh mcdaniels is a name that's been linked closely to the Packers head coaching vacancy. Really since Mike McCarthy got fired in early December. Lot of positives. When it comes to New England's offensive coordinator, he has previous head coaching experience. He was with the Broncos in two thousand nine to two thousand and ten is their head coach. He's young relatively young forty two years old. He's ofensive my good wishes. Something that a lot of Packers fans have clamored for since Mike McCarthy got fired. He comes from the Bill Belichick tree of winning. He may be a great coach. But is he a great fit for the Green Bay Packers right now? Greg former Packers beat writer. He's now with the Boston sports journal doesn't necessarily think he's the best fit. But Dr joined Greg Matzek on sports central on six twenty WTMJ last night. Here's what he had to say about Josh mcdaniels knowing what you know about doc mcdaniels knowing what you know. About the Packers. And the way they operate in Green Bay would that be a good fit? I don't think. So I think that, you know, the number one reason is that Josh will want to structure things how he wants to structure them, which includes bringing is own personnel guy. And it sure seems to me that Brian good Kinshasa's is entrenched there in in Green Bay. And and the other thing is that, you know, of course, I've been up there covered the team. I know how things go and. You know, the Packers are a different organization, and then the other NFL team in terms of, you know, there's a expected openness, you know, with the team because it's publicly owned, and and you know, I just don't know how sort of the patriot way would mash up there. But I mean, that's secondary. I think the number one thing is Josh is gonna wanna line things up. How he wants to line them up. And I just don't see the Packers all of a sudden changing course and saying, okay, Josh mcdaniels. Yeah. You can do whatever you want to do if you become head coach. I just don't think that's going to happen. That's Greg Bavard of the Boston sports journal joining Greg Matic on sports central right here on six twenty WTMJ last night. Now, Gina was interesting when we had Larry McCarron on earlier this morning. He agreed with that sentiment to a certain extent that if a head coach or a potential head coach wants to come to Green Bay and do things his way it might not mesh very well considering the power structure. As it's currently construct. And maybe that speaks to is some Bill Belichick's accolades having done so well elsewhere in the NFL because there is that patriots way. Right. And then there's everybody else does business and maybe the two just don't mesh. It's got to be the correct situation in college hoops, twenty second ranked Wisconsin back in action tonight.
