"Did you steal you a game, or to at least hold down the fort strong enough to not give up the first goal, which is tough because again, you know, you have these giveaways in front of him, you have miss coverages. I mean, even on that first school, you mentioned the gris like fail to clear, but also slave in just had a route to the net. They completely bungled the coverage at the top of the zone. So I think, again, you just need him to steal you a game. Kind of like tuca rask in that first period and game three. It was game three. It was game three. In game three. 20 shots on gold in 2019. You need that kind of performance. And that's what's going to take to win. And again, guess what, Connor, neither of those things are easy to do. Those things are going to take some real grit, you know? It's about drive and power, you know, is Dwayne The Rock Johnson. I was going to say you went to break into The Rock rap, but that's what it's going to take. It's a rock like performance, so to speak. Connor, the rest of this series throughout the playoffs, the off season, what can people look forward to from you over at Boston sports journal? Yeah, for as ever long as a series goes and then as you said into the off season, we'll have pretty much daily content. "Oh, he was. And I did. I did write about Al for Boston sports journal, just sort of a look at his path here, coming back to Boston, getting ready for this moment. I mean, this is his first playoff game, and NBA arena since 2019 with the Celtics. So he was pumped up. He saw him flexing for the crowd after an early bucket inside. You saw him stepping right into a three in the early moments. And our commenters were on it, and that raw video we posted, John, who is in the front, Al just splashing threes at practice the other day. You know, one after another. And that's how it was shot looked in this game. It looks great. He closed the year shooting 44% from three. Rebounding. He's been terrific. And just to switch it. I just always there. Aggressive bang and mismatches in the post. He did everything they needed. And he played 40 minutes. We have to, I don't want to dwell on it. We have to get robbed back as quickly as possible. I know, I know Bobby, you don't want to go on it. I know Bobby, you have a lot of faith in generally speaking. You think Daniel tice? No, I'm worried about Tyson. You have the more vulnerable you are here. No, in all three, your guys pick up 2000 that first and you go out, where you gonna go from here. But hopefully that doesn't happen again. That really threw the game off for both teams early at thought, all that foul trouble and the natural lucky it evened out because they were following like crazy early and then the Celtics got it bad at the end of the first and luckily I think only ended with three fouls after 200. Again, I like John. I don't love Tyson. It's those heavy minutes, man. I like tice as an absolute band aid stop gap for a game. If they gotta go again, four or 5, 6, 7 games here. He's going to be exposed. You have to, you're going to have to survive it. It's a problem. It's a real problem. It is. Did we, before we get out of here, we do have to talk about, I don't know if you guys already did. The Kyrie nonsense. We always have to go there. We talked about it here. One, it's like, in the sense of, you know, he's talking about wanting a frigging tribute video, and then the first time somebody says something mean to him, he acts like a 5th grader, and he's like, whatever, here's the finger. I know you are, but what am I? So like, I don't understand this guy, but what we were asking Bobby was. He threw multiple fingers multiple. He's going to leave this game with three different finds. Twitter is nothing but Kyrie giving people the finger right now. There's like a hundred different clips, but what we asked, Bobby, is do you think Kyrie allowed it to get to him on that last possession and he said, I'm burying these guys on my own..

"The home of the Celtics, 98 5, a sports home. Changing the play turns and gives bullet and runs it up at a good start. Outside of the end zone. Touchdown patriots. Sweet peak Brandon Bowman. And Brandon Bolden. That was hella run there 15 yard touchdown run. Patriots her score of the game. Make it 17 7 Miami at that time. Patriots with two rushing touchdowns on the day. That's brought to you by Verizon. This is the end of the game Russian touchdown update Verizon teaming up with Damien Harris and patriots for rushing to help first responders this season on New England's first responders, nominate your first responder now in the contest page. At 98 5 a sports hope. Dot com. So buck 34 as a team of the ground couple of touchdowns, but they were still 8 out gained on the ground by the Miami Dolphins. 43 carries a 195 yards rushing with one touchdown and we bring in Greg beard of Boston sports journal as he joins us each and every week in the postgame here on the Shaw's patriots postgame show. And so Greg is the reason the Patriots lost this game in Miami 33 24 today, mostly on the defense and the fact that they got gashed in the running game again. Well, Jim, I mean, I don't think there's any shortage of, you know, candidates for why they lost this game. I think that number one, I think Mac Jones played shaky in this game. You know, he had the pick 6 on his first pass the temp of the game, put him down 14 nothing. He had the fumble fumble snap exchange with Ted Keras at the Miami 22. That took points off the board, the dolphin scored a field goal after that. Mac Jones took responsibility for that play after the game. It didn't sound like him just being a good teammate and to me the snap looked fine. I think he just pulled out early. You know, the team falling behind again, it's just been a constant theme. Between the colts bills and now the dolphins, they had a combined deficit of 57 to 7 to start those games. And the defense couldn't hold again, and they got pushed around in the running game. So I don't know, take your pick. The bottom line is, it's just not good enough. Not nearly good enough. Can you explain their struggles against to a now three and a versus the Patriots and if you look at buffalo and only have come into New England now two years in a row in one, is this a sign of things to come that the AFC has become more tough than the patriot struggle against these teams now? I mean, you know, Miami has swept the Patriots for the first time since 2000, the Patriots are now dropped three of four to both the bills and the dolphins, which, you know, three or four years ago, you'd say they'll like that's never gonna happen. But it has now happened. You know, their struggles with two of who's now three and O against them. You know, Joe, it's a good question. I mean, I would start with the run defense. I think that the run defense has not nearly been good enough the past two years and really you need to get in a situation where and this is what I thought the dolphins did a good job of today with Mac Jones is that, you know, you got to you got to defend the run better and you got to get them in the long yardage. You need them in third and 8 and third 9 and third and ten, where they have to rely on it. This was another game similar to the colts game where the defense was so porous and the start was so porous that they could they could avoid their quarterback and that's they largely did. I mean, even on the last drive of the game, they called a pass on first down, which was fine. I mean, the guy was wide open. But how many challenging throws did to a really have in this game that he completed? And the biggest play that he made was, you know, scrambling when Matthew judon runs right by him in the pocket. And to me, it starts with the problems with two it starts with, you gotta, you gotta make it to a center game. You have to make them force them to drop back to the beach you through the air. And the Patriots have failed to do that every time they played the dolphins. I think he did air it out in week one this year. But, you know, I think that was sort of a game plan choice. I just don't think they have defended well enough. They haven't put them in bad situations, and so he hasn't been a turnover machine against them. I mean, he's back and forth, but when you're really soft in the middle and the Patriots have, you know, all season and they always have trouble when you have to worry about all right, they're going to read options to quarterback going to run. You know, they play a lot safer, play a lot softer coverage when that happens. All of it is just a problem for this personnel and this defense. Craig, how much do you think the coaches were complicit in this loss today, specifically on play calls like that, fourth and one situation, where Mac Jones, you know, he's part of that issue where the head bob or whatever it is, they get called for the penalty there and it screws it up and Bill Belichick after the game was talking about how it was executed poorly. But why not line up and just, you know, we're going for this. Fourth and one, he's pulled off a fourth and one. In Buffalo, you know the win in Buffalo before the kid can do it. I just thought that they overthought a situation like that and I blame the coaches. Yeah, it was almost like something that they worked on during the week and they said, oh, well, we feel confident that we'll be able to execute in the dolphins will be dumb and they'll jump offside. So we're going to use that here. I just didn't understand the call. I didn't understand not going for it in that situation. I mean, you know, it looked like it was just scared money. Why are you holding back? Like, what are you afraid of with the dolphins, even if you turn the ball over at midfield, as long as you're, you know, not God awful in the run defense. Wait, you think two is going to do much? I mean, when he got the ball back, he was terrible. I didn't understand that. I think it again shows. This has been a constant theme throughout this year. That Bill Belichick does not trust this offense. He doesn't trust Mac Jones. He doesn't trust that they're going to not screw it up, but I didn't understand that. It was akin to the Tampa Bay, fourth and three. The other sort of situations where you're just like, you know, really what's the risk and reward here? Why not go for it, try to get a little bit of momentum going into halftime? And then come out with the ball. I mean, it could have been a whole different ball game. Instead, you know, midfield, you're just trying to draw the dolphins offside. I thought it was weak. Hey Greg, I just have to ask this because I know you have an article on it, who should the Patriots want to play in the postseason and people were doing that before today's game? Do you think the team was looking at it that way at all? Maybe who they dressed who they played or they sat and during the game did some scoreboard watching or do you think they just played bad a bad football game today? Yeah, I don't think that I didn't get that sense at all. I mean, you know, high tires had a banged up knee when he's been out there. He hasn't been good. So leave him home, let him rest. You know, guys who are, you know, really, you know, pushing it with an injury, you're safe. I mean, I don't know about Andrews has had some, you know, little injuries here and there, shoulder, stuff like that. You know, maybe at some point you're like, you know, this isn't going this way, so we're gonna go with Keras or whatever. But I didn't get that sense. I just thought the Patriots put like crap, just like they have to end this season. I mean, to finish with three losses in four games, where if you just win one more of those games, then, you know, you might even have a chance at a buy, you know,.

"About that. But the Bengals have a shaky offensive line that negates some things will help the Patriots get pressure. So yeah, I want the Bengals if I have my brothers. Okay. And we will talk about whether the Bengals want you, but we'll run through the rest of the AFC. One of the top two seeds either gonna be Kansas City or Tennessee. It's Tennessee as it stands right now if everyone holds served. You know, that they'll be the one seed. Should they fall to two? That is a potential patriots opponent between Casey and Tennessee. It looks on paper that Casey is the scarier team, but in terms of a matchup with the Patriots, Tennessee might be the bigger issue. It might be the bigger problem. Yeah. I'm scared to death at a time. I don't want to play. I don't want nothing to do with them in the playoffs. Yeah. I mean, and you initially I should point out on Boston sports journal, you pointed out your predictions when you thought the Patriots were going to win the AFC was a second round loss to Tennessee. You know, and that's how you had the season ending. You're face him in the first round. It's just, you know, it's a quicker death. Yeah, and I actually have a decent chance of my preseason prediction coming through, which was 11 and 6. Beat the bills at buffalo in the first round lose at Kansas City in the divisional round. So I got a chance. My pre season prediction of pretty good. Spot on. Yeah. But yeah, the Titans, I'm scared to death of the Titans. Look, they're not, they're not going to run away from you. They're not formidable, so in a lot of ways you're like, all right, well, at least we know we're not going to get blown out of the water or fall behind like 27, nothing in the first quarter. Where the chiefs have that possibility, they haven't been that team in a long time, probably going back to the beginning of last year before Patrick Mahomes had that turf toe. They've never been the same really since then. The Titans Derrick Henry's coming back come back to practice this week. They could have a buy where they're rested, Mike vrabel with more time to think of stuff to just screw with the Patriots, scares me to death. The Titans, if they want to run the ball, they can do that. All of a sudden a patriots have to put more resources to stop in the run, all of a sudden that opens it up to AJ Brown and it Julio Jones is back and you know all these guys who are coming back from injury who you didn't have to worry about the first time. I mean, the Titans didn't have anybody coming in here. And it was still, they were one yard away for making it a one score game midway through the fourth quarter. What do you think they're gonna do with a full squad?.

"It's the Shawn's patriots postgame show. Jim Marie Joe Murray. Greg bedard Boston sports journal. They're a band that people are like, that was just a band from that time. Late 90s, early 2000s. I never liked them. You did. Everyone liked them and everyone like went biscuit. It was like the steroid air and baseball. You loved it then. Don't pretend to not like it now because it's like the hip thing to do. You love them then. Don't lie to yourself. I think Bernard was a headbanger, right? With the 7 string base, you would feel it, right? Right, but I think you two in Darius Rucker and who you were a little bit more my style back then. So they're in the playoffs, right? So the Patriots now officially have a playoff spot. Is this did the prospective change for you, Greg and that like, okay, you know, I do think that they should be applauded and Bill Belichick should be applauded after last year's down year, 7 and 9 with Cam Newton. It looked like it was rudderless. They had no answer at quarterback. But because of the 7 game winning streak that they had, did your perspective change and now like, you know, if they were to be one and done, is it a disappointing season? Like, it's good that they've gotten here and it's a hell of a turnaround, but did the expectations now change because of that winning streak more than anything else. Well, I think it depends on the matchup and right now it's the buffalo it's the bills in Buffalo. We'll see how things shake out. If they were to go to buffalo and lose after beating Miami in the season finale, would I be disappointed? A little bit, but I think that would be a good step forward for this team. I mean, I think in my preseason prediction, I had 11 and 6 and I had them winning, I think, a first round game. And you know, so if they didn't, if they didn't win that, I mean, I like the Patriots chances and a rematch. I just think they played awful defensively. The last time out against the bills, if they meet the Bengals and they lose, yeah, I would be disappointed. I mean, I think that offense is gonna be a handful, but I don't think much of the Bengals defense at all. And I would be disappointed if Mac Jones in the offense didn't put up enough points to win that game. It'll be on the defense. We'll see. But shorter answer is I'd be slightly disappointed that they lost in the first round of the playoffs, but I don't think it would be a huge disappointment..

"We want to talk about, we'll start with last night first and again, just to let everybody know John zanis here subbing in for Nick cattle's. Chief should have lost this game. And this really messes with the Patriots mojo here and everything that they need to do down the stretch. They had a little margin for error. They don't have it anymore. The chiefs look to be in the driver's seat for that first seat and you wrote about this over at Boston sports journal, just the path for the Patriots and what it's going to look like. You already had them as the two seed behind Kansas City because you think they might eat a loss before the season is over. This really makes it hard for them. I mean, they have to be perfect. Yeah, pretty much. I mean, yeah, I wrote a column based 5 questions coming out of the buy for the Patriots down the stretch and my ultimate question. My question number one was how does this all in for the Patriots? And you can go over to BSG and see that whole column. And I broke down. Basically it's going to come down to the Patriots. The chiefs and the Titans for the number one seed in the AFC. And you look at Kansas City, they just played the Chargers last night. They had the Steelers. The Bengals are a good team. I don't think the chiefs are going to have much problems with them, even though that's on the road. Denver's on the road. Divisional games are always tough like last night. So there are no gimmes left for Kansas City, but last night was the best chance for them to lose. And basically the Patriots need the Patriots need the chiefs to lose at some point or else the Patriots have to win out. And myself, I find that hard between the colts game on Saturday night, the bills game, the bills are going to come out here looking for revenge, hopefully the weather is a little bit more even this time. And then the dolphins are no layup at Miami, the season ending game. They're one of the red hot teams in the AFC. So last night's game that the chiefs came back and won that game was I wouldn't say a huge blow, but it was definitely a blow for the Patriots and the number one seed. And to me, I'm sure there are a lot of patriots fans who watched last night's game and are just furious about what happened because I thought that the Chargers left at least 6 points on the board, if not 9 with forked down decisions from Brandon staley and I just, I was just puzzled by all of them. Well, let's get into that because this is today is a huge day for the meatheads versus the mathematicians. And I know the real answer lies somewhere in the middle. It's always a more nuanced debate than people are going to have. But this was a classic look see, you know, take math and stuff it sort of night for the, you know, for, you know, for the you know, I mean, everyone played the Phil Simms clip went viral from last week. You know, analytics, this analytics that I know in my gut what I see, but last night was one of those read the situation as much as the math sort of things and the colts the colts rather. The Chargers definitely definitely shot themselves in the foot by following the math, so to speak. Yeah, here's the thing..

"Rushing touchdown patriots today verizon teaming up with damian harris of the new england patriots for rushing to help first responders this season to honor new england's first responders dominate. Your first responder now on the contest page at ninety eight. Five the sports dot com. Shaw's patriots postgame. Show jim joe. Murray joined by. Greg bernard boston sports journal. Is the patriots defeat. The la chargers twenty seven to twenty four now four and four on the season Their biggest win best win in maybe a couple of seasons at least in terms of a win on the road. Would you agree greg. Yeah i would agree with that. I mean i think he would have to definitely put the ravens game at home last year in the rain Even though the elements and also the ravens center had a lot to do with that game. yeah i thought this was An excellent victory by the patriots Gives them a chance to keep building their confidence. And you know you look at how the schedule lines up. And you think that they could go on a little run here but they gotta they gotta keep stacking success and They can't start feeling good about themselves. they have to. They have to keep grinding each week and see what happens in the end. Yeah greg last week they dropped fifty four on the jets. And it's like. Oh yeah it's the jets but they did follow up with a good performance that ain't gonna give credit to their defense What did you see the defense due to distract herbert In this game it's now back to back years where you know. They've kind of held him in. Check only under three hundred yards again today. What'd you see from the defense. Yeah i saw joe. I saw a lot of You know what's typical of knowing one. And i'm watching his tape against the ravens where they lost. I think. Twenty four thirty four to six Before their bye week. So this is now to Successive underwhelming performances from justin herbert. And i think you know. There's a theme there that The ravens are very similar to the patriots in that they you know they have an experienced coordinator in wink. Martindale experienced secondary and just shifting the looks All the time. And i thought herbert had taking away. Like what herbert really likes to do. the ravens did a really good job and i think the patriots followed suit in herbert. Loves these little slant passes in the middle of the field and It it did not happen very often today. I mean the defense got off to a bit of a rough start. But then they settle down I think that when you look at both of these quarterbacks they finished actually with the exact same stats. And i think it's fitting considering that both coordinators brandon staley the head coach of the charters brought his system with them. Both of them do a really good job of mixing up. Looks snap and post nap to you. Know at least at least make the quarterback second-guessed himself and when you're talking about young quarterbacks who don't have a lot of experience that can really fool with them if they can't get into a rhythm and i thought that happened to both quarterbacks today yes so i get the impression you weren't all that impressed with mack. Jones performance no. No i mean look. He struggled There's no question about that. He admitted that in the post game. he missed some things. This was the first time when he went through that. Stretch right around the end of the half into the second half where he was something like two of his last thirteen or something like that and there were throws to be made there. And i and i and i'm sure on film there were some issues with routes and things like that with his receivers but i think that Mac for the first time in his career my opinion got sped up this game And you and you. I've used that term a lot over the years. Even with tom brady at times. I mean it happens when you know a pocket quarterback who is reliant on winning before the snap and leading that to winning after the snap when they start getting different looks and also mack was getting a lot of pressure. you combine. That and he was. He was out of his element in this game. He was not comfortable really ever in this game he did make some. You know big throws to clinch to gain there At the end so give him credit and saying it was a bad performance. It was just one of those when you go up against a well-coordinated defense sometimes you're going to have these and you just hope that you come out on the winning side at the end of it and he in the patriots did and so you know. I give them credit for grinding out this winter. He'll he'll definitely learn from this because there will be teams down the road that will look to sort of do the same thing. Yeah just the most impressive thing for me. Today was seven play. Fifty five yard drive. Took seven minutes off the clock. Now it's midway through the fourth quarter. Set up that field goal there. I mean you know. The team won the game despite mack jones not playing well. And that's not something we can really so that's happened this year. Yeah i thought. Joe i thought overall to me the theme in this game was basically the quarterbacks and the defense canceled at each other i mean i mean really. It came down. It came down to when you eliminate the the the quarterbacks and then it was dic- there early. I mean early on. It looked like it was going to be an afl game. Something like forty five forty but the but the defense has settled down and then the really came down to the turnovers and the patriots had one kendrick. Born took three points off the board with that fumble Justin herbert through two interceptions and it resulted in ten points. And that was the difference in the game. And i mean i think overall the quarterbacks cancelled each other out so then it was down to running game protection defense special teams. The patriots had a huge edge. I don't even know why the charters even bother putting balls inbounds because they obviously can't cover So i thought you know once once sort of jones in herbert negated each other. I thought it came down to who is the better overall team and That was the patriots in their ability to cash in on the mistakes. You know how sensitive some of these patriots fans can be greg. And i used a god zoellick's words because he said at the regulation as it was wrapping up kind of same old charters and a lot of ways and you talk about how they were on some of the coverage and special teams. Like i don't know how you can't look at this and say look. It was a great patriot win but a lot of ways. Same old chargers right. Yeah i mean you can. You both can be true. I know it can't be for certain people in this fan base but the same can be true. I mean i. I don't know about you guys but you know watching that game. I'm just. I came away thinking like the chargers aren't ready yet. They're not. They're not ready to play this type of mature physical. Don't make mistakes that type of yet to look. I would the other opponent and see who's going to grind this thing out and i just don't think. The chargers gift brandon staley. A lot of credit came in as first year coach. I think he is turning the tide. I think they are better team but I i think that this team is not quite ready. There are a year or two away from sort of losing their charger label. But right now they still have it. "At the ballpark, both during the season and even extending into the postseason, there is definitely, you know, more, I would say 20 somethings involved. It stands to reason that those people are going to be louder and more energetic than an older crowd or a corporate crowd. So that's contributed to it as well. Yeah, and I'm gonna add a fourth one. I think the current climate in Boston sports has people really starved for a winner in a good story. You've had a couple of years of patriots struggles. The Celtics were an underachieving kind of mopey team last year. So I think being able to embrace a team like the Red Sox who are true underdogs who seem to genuinely like one another who seemed to like playing this game in front of these fans and have really shown it time and again, just with that kind of comeback kids sort of attitude is really refreshing at a time where they're just aren't a lot of great options. I mean, the bruins are obviously I think a team that fits that model as well. But the Red Sox are here on the cusp on the precipice of getting to a World Series and getting to play for a title. I don't think anybody expected that at all. So I think that's a really big one, too. Yeah, no question. You know, this is sort of playing with found money at this point. I think that was somewhat true when they beat the Yankees as long as they got past the potential horror of having their season finished with a one game playoff at home to their arch rivals. Then I think fans began to embrace this team as something of an underdog. And that feels funny to say when you think about the resources, the Red Sox have as an organization. But probably most fans didn't have a great feeling about the chances going into the division series matched against the rays, put the payroll issues aside, the raised dominated them during the season. They finished 8 games in front of them during the regular season in the standings. And yet the Red Sox figured out a way to have a couple of walk off wins at home and sent Tampa Bay home, and now there's this momentum that's gathering. And yeah, I think some of it has to do with the struggles, the Patriots have. There's a bandwagon effect here with, well, maybe this team that we hadn't expected to be in position to do so might be the team closest to winning a championship of the four majors in Boston. And I think people are happy to even if you're on the bandwagon, they're happy to be on it and happy to be at the park so the next three nights. And we are guaranteed three games are gonna be a lot of fun. So again, make sure you follow Sean mcadam and everything that he writes and tweets over at Boston sports journal. "Here with Connor Ryan at Boston sports journal and Connor before we start. We always say who was a number 64. And we were we actually started recording and then I stopped and said, wait, who was the number 64? And I said, Bobby Robbins and lane mcdermot 64. And I was right. I sniped that. Sometimes sometimes you just gotta relish in your own good things that you do, and this is a good example of that. I got those right. I feel like that's I feel like that adds a few points to me in some way. Whether you're a stick tab, Evan, good job. Oh, oh yeah, definitely a pat on the back. But Connor, what is up? Evan, doing well, not recording from a Dunkin Donuts packing lot. So things are looking up. How you doing? I'm good. Yes, that was quite the scene. Honestly, it looked fine. I don't know if you wouldn't watch the video, but it looked good. The sound was good. Little ambient noise, The Rain that a pad is down on my car. Yeah, for those who love ASMR that listen to this, maybe you could listen to that and we're soothed by The Rain hitting the top of your Honda. Maybe that maybe that was a good thing for you. But it ended up being fine. That's what I was perfect 'cause it was either we did that or we would record it like 1230 in the morning. So I was more in favor of just sending you out to the former for sure. Four, sure. Okay, so the preseason is over. It's done. Next stop is the regular season. But that is not for a long time. It's not until October 16th and time recorded this as October 7th. We got 9 days. Until the start of the season. So let the season previews begin. But before we preview the season, which we will on subsequent episodes of this and Bruin's beat, we got to break down the previous season a little bit. And obviously, Wednesday night was the return of Charlie Coyle. To the bruins lineup. And he looked really, really, really good..

"Get a guy that can help protect? Yeah, they might have to. You know, but I think this is a this is a team that's a work in progress. I mean, I think we all knew that they were very deep that they basically had one or two extra running backs even after the Sony Michelle trade. You know, there was going to be one inactive every week. And that's been Stevenson because of his issues. I think they need to give, you know, they need to give JJ Taylor or Stevenson or whoever more playing time. They might have to make a move. But I think it's the type of thing Joe. And this goes for a lot of areas on this team, is, you know, they'll give it a little bit more time and decide if that's the type of move they need to make around the trade deadline. If they think if they go, they could very well go back and watch the film tonight and say this sucks. We need to make a move now. And they'll do that. But, you know, I'm not familiar with Marlon Mack. I don't know how good he is in past production. I don't know if he could figure out patriots routes or anything like that. And that's stuff that the pro personnel department needs to sort through and they think he's better than what they have right now. I'm sure they'll make a move. Well, considering the performance, Greg, he did say you feel like this could be a springboard for the Patriots going forward, but Chris and San Francisco also wants to, I think, asks something similar. Chris, your next year in the Shaw's patriots postgame show. Good. Yes. Greg, I'm a subscriber to Boston sports journal. Love the site. I just, this team, at the end of the day, I was extremely proud of how they played, competed tonight, I thought that they looked a lot better than the first three games. But at the end of the day, the one and three, we all are under the understanding they have to go pretty much ten and three from here. But what did you see from this team tonight that maybe could give us hope that they could do that moving forward? Thanks, Chris. Just that they ramped up the execution level. That's what I'm always trust me. This is something I watch intently every year with this team. It's only a matter of time. It depends on when it happens and with all the new guys they invited into mix this year. The timing, the timeline, the sort of mix on the team change dynamics, then basically any other year that we've seen in a while. But what I saw tonight was they were able to execute at a high level. And I'll be able to know better once I watch the film exactly how high level. But and look, I don't think I'm not going to come in here and tell you that the bucks are any great team right now. I don't think that they are, I think that they've been kind of middling. I was surprised a little bit by their lack of focus tonight, especially with what they knew that Brady had on the line in this game. But I thought they executed a lot better in this game. And that's for to come week four for this team. I actually think that's ahead of schedule and I think that's a very good sign for the rest of the season. But Greg, then starting off kick in the kick in the ball out of bounds. Like, oh boy, oh my God. They're so dumb. Yeah, that's what I was like, I was like, you have to be kidding me. Yeah. Like, you know, and I just, I did a column the other day and it's free for people to read that they go to Boston sports general dot com and I talked to sage Roosevelt who was Bret Favre's backup going into Lambo in 2009 and I basically was asking, you know, what was Brett like behind the scenes and what was the team like and he said Brett was a completely different person that week. He was really dialed in. And, you know, he talked about how for the Vikings organization. He said the whole organization wanted to win badly for Brett in that game. And they all played great. I mean, I think they led like 21 to three before hanging on in that game. And certainly the players wanted to win it for Brett and I don't know. I just didn't, I thought I would see a lot more precision on the behalf of the bucks, but maybe they're just never going to be that team and they just got a little bit lucky last year. Do you think the patrons played for their coach tonight? No, I think that they, I think that they played for, you know, what was on the line, national television, you know, look, if they get blown out in this game, if they're one in three and they get blown out and say Mac Jones is left to hang out the dry and he throws three interceptions and it's bad. Like the Caesar's probably over. I mean, but for this team, I think they realize that they had left them and even Devin McCourty talked about it that what Matthew slater said last week. Like they were out of time. And I think they I'm sure they talked amongst themselves like it's now or never. We can't wait anymore. We can't wait until the halfway point of the season because we just lost our buffer in the first three games. And so that's the type of team that I saw tonight that had their backs up against the wall a little bit. And while they didn't get the victory, I think what they gained tonight could could be even more than just winning one game. All right, Gregor de Boston sports journal, you'll be making your usual big boy Tuesday parents with felger and masks coming up in a couple days, yes? Sounds good? Yep, I will be there. And this will probably I think you get to probably feel like this is probably after that appearance Greg, that's like the end, I think, of like the Brady Belichick thing, at least for a while, right? Yeah, I would think so. I think a lot of things were buried tonight and that's good. And now, well, you know, it's going to turn the heat up on the team and also probably the Red Sox, depending on what happens on Tuesday. So yeah, looking forward to it. All right, Gregor do our Boston sports generally and catch his appearance pilgrim as this Tuesday 2 p.m.. All right, thanks, Greg. Patriots again fall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19 to 17 lot of still hanging your calls the rest of the way. My understanding is the traffic getting home tonight slow. "Is there a design for what they want to do with Aguilar or Johnny Smith or is it just, are they not doing it? Is it a performance issue? Is it a scheme issue? It's really hard to pinpoint right now. Why everyone looks like why they look like a dead average across the board team? I think it's a different answer for just about everybody. Every Johnny Smith, he's had opportunities. He just drops them. I mean, he had three drops on Sunday, he couldn't block either. He's had other issues in other games. Agile, I think, is more about protection for, you know, I think Kendrick Bourne had did a really nice job on Sunday. But I mean, I think offensively, everything starts with the protection of the quarterback. When Mac Jones is kept clean, he's really, really good. And he's fine under duress too. And we know he's going to be under duress. But it just was not good enough. The protection for him, especially in the first half as things got away from this team. It just has not good enough on Sunday. And until they clean that up until they clean the ability to have a really good running game. Like we talked about. Before the season, about protecting the quarterback and allowing him to find these new weapons, you know, all of us all the rest is moot, John. I mean, they're just, they're not doing the basic things that we thought they would like have dominating offensive line play. And from there, it's just been a trickle down effect. Yeah, that's the killer for sure Greg. I think you nailed it. What was probably the one you can book it, count on its strength of the team was offensive line and you're right. The trickle down effect from there right now is a total collapse of the offense. So you're right. You don't have the one thing you thought you could count on. It's keeping them from being able to do virtually everything else. So it definitely starts there. We'll see if you will see if Trent Brown is healthy enough to play this week. It'll make a difference for everyone else has to step up their game, too. As Greg mentioned, a lot of good stuff over at Boston sports journal, please head over there, subscribe.

"All right, let's switch gears talk some baseball. We have Sean mcadam of the Boston sports journal alongside and Sean. Here we are. 9 games left, Red Sox kicking off a pivotal, three game series against the Yankees. They're in the driver's seat right now. Two games up on the AL wild card. Really, anything short of a sweep here and there and really good position because they're closing their schedule with three games against the Orioles three games against the nationals which are two of the worst teams in baseball. So I guess don't get swept would be really good here. But win one pretty good shape win two games and they're really, really, I wouldn't say cruising, but in really solid shape here to get to get that top AL wildcard spot. Yeah, I think you're right, John. If they get two out of the three, they can go three and three in those 6 games against the Orioles and nationals and that shouldn't be too much of a hill to climb there. You're playing as you noted two of the worst teams in the game. The Orioles are on a pace to lose about a 110 games, the nationals aren't quite so bad when you look at it from the entire season. But look at their records since the trading deadline when they moved about half their major league roster and they're a far worse team since then. So it's a pretty big cushion for the final week and really the Red Sox as you said, have to avoid being swept if they win two of three. I think the wild card race is effectively clenched..

"I don't see the cliff coming. Yeah, I mean, look, I'm sure we'll get into a lot of Brady talk next week. Oh yeah. You know, so I don't want to go nuts with it now, but look, look, I'm not gonna me personally, I mean, patriots fans can do whatever they want. Me personally, I'm not that impressed with 9 touchdown passes in two weeks against two defenses that have new defensive coordinators who really don't have that good of personnel on either side or it's very young. I mean, the cowboys, Dan Quinn's there, they're not all that good. They didn't have DeMarcus Lawrence and DeMarcus Lawrence was a little bit beat up in that game. This past week is the falcons we all know they're garbage and, you know, had a high draft pick and spend it on a tight end and they have a whole new system there. So, you know, that's pretty typical. I mean, that Brady through 9 touchdown passes. I mean, whooped you damn do, you know, really in my opinion. It's less than by the end of the season. It's less that it's more the decision. The further you get away from it the worse it looks. Yeah, I mean, but I mean, look, the scoreboard is gonna be there. At the end of the look, Brady won the first year without question. We'll see what happens in year two. It looks like Brady's gonna win it. But we don't know. We don't know how the Patriots are gonna look and Mac Jones is gonna look. They could be by the end of the season if the Patriots finish 11 and 6 and win a playoff game in almost pull out a second round game and it looks like they have their franchise quarterback of the future. You know, maybe it's a little bit closer, but there's no question through what one season and two games. It's Tom Brady and TKO. But long ways ago. Okay, I promised we're going to reserve the rest of the Brady talk from a week from now because that's all you're going to hear. But again, it's hard to not notice and it's hard to stay focused on the week ahead, which is the science, of course, Greg with the benefit of game. Don't look ahead. Stay focused. With the benefit of some game film, I know Greg is going to really break down what happened exactly in this patriots jets game. So make sure to look to BS J for that. Upcoming once he gets a chance to break things down and see, could the Patriots have been better? What went wrong there? There are other opportunities. Maybe they could take. "Boston sports journal, Greg bedard and Greg, I guess the morning after question on the Patriots 25 to 6 win over the jets. Was it a good winner or a bad win? It was a win. I would not say it was a good win. I mean, look, when the opponent are rebuilding opponent, gives you four interceptions before even the halfway point in the third quarter. And you need to basically make some defensive stands in the fourth quarter to win that game. It's not a good one. It's just not. And I don't know why people are trying to talk themselves into it. It wasn't. I mean, a lot of the stuff that they had issues with in week one from past protection, stopping the run getting off the field in key points. I mean, they got a little bit better at that. But in general, there was a little bit of improvement incremental overall, not with the run defense, I thought it was, I thought it was worse in this game. The jets almost averaged almost 5 yards of carry. And really, if they just stuck to the ground, they probably would have been in this game till the very end. But no, I did not think it was a good win. It was a win that it was a win that they needed to get. They got it. What's not right home about it? Yeah. I guess in addition to the things that you mentioned with the run defense, the protection, obviously, was was rough. And the trend Brown injury certainly is a huge deal. They start one tackle. They have to yank him, you know, Durant there early in the first half, just because things weren't going well. It just seemed like Mac was never able to get comfortable in the pocket. I guess the question is, how much of it was on game planning? How much of it was on personnel limitations, whether it be down a tackle or getting to know the receivers where it's just still, you're not able to open things up. I guess as you wrote in your column for Boston sports journal Greg, everyone's got to be a little bit patient. And I think that's the problem is nobody is patient. You want to see them open it up. And it's not just to get to where you were in the best days of Tom Brady where the offense could just march up and down the field and score. I think even seeing what you saw from Mac Jones in week one, gave you enough confidence to think, okay, they can do a little more than they're doing here. And you can see it almost felt like a step back offensively where, I mean, just yards per attempt. Everything was even more conservative than it was in week one. In a game where you've felt like they might have been able to open it up a little bit..

"He could be Either guy who's out you're talking about, you know, throwing things out the window and it's funny. Cuz Joe was just talking to me about this during the commercial break. Do you think that this will ultimately be from the quarterback on down at every position. Do you think this is going to be like kind of an unconventional coaching season for Bill Belichick and how he runs this team? I think so. A lot of that depends on who the quarterback is and what they can do at the line of scrimmage and those sort of things. But I expect, I expect this defense to be sort of like the 2019 version, but hopefully, they finish stronger. Hopefully they have an offense that stays on the field, a little bit longer and and, and allows them to be more fresh. But I wouldn't expect too much out of the ordinary from the Patriots. This is a, you know, provided Mac becomes the quarterback at some point in time, whether that's a walk-in over opener or week, 8, I think it was surprised. We have mac Jones does not finish the season as a starter for the Patriots and if that happens then I think that you're looking at a very conventional, a Patriots team. And yes, there are a lot of new faces that they're going to have to gel that's going to. They're going to have to start being very successful by the end of the season, sort of follow the Tampa Bay script, where they were basically what they were dead. 75. I think at one point, and then they won their last eight in a row. That's normally, the way things happen. When you have a bunch of editions in the off-season, and but I think that if the Pieces come together including Mac Jones, I think this could be a very traditional Patriots team in terms of what they do offensively and also how they play defense cuz they're going back to the more traditional three for that. We knew of this team or in the first dynasty. Craig Jesse Jackson with a nice break up. Kyle Tucker, got beat by the tight end. Again something we've been seeing in practice did any other defensive back stand down to you tonight with the with with Stephon Gilmore on the line up? Not really. I mean, you know, yeah, you know, Jackson had an ice pack of pass breakup. He's going to need to sustain assist his success. Kyle Duggar, you know, that plane. It's even in practice seems like he gets victimized by back shoulders a lot. I don't know. I don't know what the deal is on that, but I'm not overly concerned about him. Those are good throws and good catches that off. You know, the other guys get paid too. I mean, if he was just not good in coverage and they were complaining all sorts of passes against him, all sorts of different types of passes. Then I'd be more concerned. I'm not that concerned about it, but he is going to have to prove that he can, he can play in space better. He knows that something that he had to work on this offseason. Cuz if he doesn't he's going to get targeted by every team, every week. They're going to their formation Ali. They're going to get him one-on-one with somebody on the backside of the play until he proves he can stop it. So that's something to watch. Let's bring in Tommy from Lynn with him. Thoughts on Tom Lawrence. Yeah, tell me what's up? What do you think of Mike Jones tonight? What's up, guys? I take a phone that needs a good and and it's going to be back tones all the way. How would you do it? Cuz he sucks jams. Thank you. Tommy. Have a good night. You think he finishes the season Greg? Is there any shot at Mac Jones starts this season? Yep. Yep, I think so. I think he's, I think he's right on course. I mean, I'm not saying it's going to happen, but you're asking me, is there a chance that he does? Yeah, absolutely. Cam has a lot to prove, you know, some of the stuff they talked about earlier, you know, diagnosing plays getting out of bad place again, knowing how to turn a team's defense is aggressiveness against them for a big place. Cam, Cam Newton, do that. I don't know. But, you know, we we know one thing bill is no dummy, and he keeps prolonging this and prolonging this. He keeps giving Mac Jones log. It looks, whether it's in, practice or today in the game. This is not accidental. This is this is not, oh, let's get the kids feet wet because we might need them later on. No. No, that's not what this is,. This is he wants to see what this can do. This kid, can do. They keep throwing different things at him. Situationally defensively. What have you? It's just he goes, practice is going to be another step up and, you know, we'll sort of see where it is after Philly, but I'd say right now, I would say that I would say Jones continues to charge hard on Newton. I think he is closing hard. I don't think Newton for openers didn't do much to make his case cause he's going to need to Rebound in camps a competitor. So we'll see what he does. I mean he has been, he has been improved in Camp and I think that's because of Mac Jones and he realizes what the score is and so he's been improved. And and getting better, and having more of a sense of urgency this year, but that's going to need to continue and he's going to need to show out more in the games. Robert Kraft Gives Honest Assessment of Patriots Drafting

"Heard from Robert Kraft yesterday was a man who was completely honest about where the the team is in a lot of different areas. I wouldn't will get into this but I don't think his quarterback comments were Something to really weigh in heavily on but I do think that overall I mean him talking about, you know, the draft specifically the personality just sound thrilled with having to Shell out as much money as he did and he basically admitted that the only reason they had to do that cuz they didn't draft well in recent years and and he committed what a lot of us have said where it's not sustainable to do that. You need the draft to be the lifeblood of your team so that you can do other things like you can't just every three years song ten free agents. It just it it's probably not going to happen be it's not economically feasible. And so I thought it was very refreshing for Robert to to talk to the assemblage yesterday and and really be honest and I think you know in judging from the comments at Boston Sports Journal com from my column off of this press conference wage. Think on a whole I thought the Patriots the Patriots fans reacted very well to it that are really like, okay. Well, at least now we know that the person in charge realizes is a isn't happy about it called last season horrible and B thinks that the team has made correction and is moving in the right direction. That's all anybody ever wanted to to hear from anybody at at one page place and they heard it from Craft and I think it made Patriot Nation breathe a little bit easier. Not that they weren't confident in Bill Belichick rebounding in any event, but I just think it reinforced that. All right. Well, we're still the Patriots thought we had a we had an off-year didn't go well we're going to correct things were going to get things back on track.

Is Cam Newton Ready to be Patriots Quarterback?

"The biggest question of all and of course, I'm talking about Cam Newton Cam Newton ready to be the quarterback for this team or false pause, as of today. It's false and I wrote a column this weekend for Boston Sports Journal, that basically laid out and I'm talking to different people both around the team and also around the league about where Cam is and there's three things that need to go on Nick and it needs to go on now and it needs to go on every day off of the day until the season kicks off and number one. It's cam has to lose weight. He can't he can't play a 250 anymore. He's not a young buck. We saw dead. You know, I thought this but it was confirmed by a couple of NFL people that I I talked to and I trust they said that cams legs got heavier as the season went on and off and run as much he wasn't as a as Elusive and the big thing is not only that but your legs are everything when you throw the ball, if you don't have your legs which you did earlier in the season, they threw the ball a little bit better. If you don't have your legs then you have nothing as far as power and things like that and also just accuracy if you don't have your legs then you have to compensate upper body and things just get all out of whack and that's what happened. When cam last year. So in cam I will give him credit on the I am athlete podcast. He did say, I think he was trying to lose ten pounds. I'd go less. I think he needs to get to 3235. I think that gives them a better chance to be sustainable. He doesn't he doesn't need to be 2:50 to run over linebackers anymore. There aren't that many linebackers that are 2:50 a.m. Should be in a business and his age are going to be 32 a plow on those guys over. So there's that there is he has to get into he he has a he has to get with her own coach. I hope he's working with one but he better be working on one that works on his mechanics all the time every day. Get back to where he was at the beginning of last season get it out of her system because he needs to learn how to just be able to flick the ball. Ten yards instead of making a whole body convulsion just to get the ball out in the last thing is the biggest thing Nick and we've talked about it. I thought is he needs he needs Express 24-hour premium tutoring on the Patriots Playbook and what goes on as far as all right. If the defense does this then I can change to this and what's my audible what's my check because I know everybody's all excited about Johnny Smith and Hunter Henry and you know, we you can also factor in The athletic fullbacks that they've wanted to have for two years. Dan Vitality is coming back supposedly and also they dropped adult and Keen to play that position because there's a choice that they want to be more like the 49ers with use checked. And so it's all nice and dandy that they have two tight ends and athletic fullback and people are absolutely right to say that benefit of that is you get match up issues where all right, if it's safety then we're just going to run over them if their linebackers then we're just going to run past them. We're going to throw the ball. That is great and all but it doesn't mean Jack if you don't have a quarterback who can't see the defense see what's going on check to the right play and take advantage of the defense and last year cam wasn't even close to that. So unless all those things happen and he's not there at this point. He is not ready to be the starting quarterback for the for the Patriots. Do I think he can get there and be better? Yeah, but we'll have to see.

"Welcome in to poke the bear episode 33. There's a danger Chara episode. Look at the timing the timing I was I was preparing the show and I always check I never know the time, you know this from editing bevilacqua who edits each episode for video knows that it always I always forget the number of episode it is and so today when I was writing down that in the notebook, I was going through looking back on 31 32, today's Thursday 3, so they don't charmix is returned to the Garden last night. We were recording this before it. So obviously, we don't know what happened maybe scored three goals. Maybe he put three goals in his own net. But like I said 33 Evan Mera Dost Ki Kanna Ryan of Boston Sports Journal. Now one thing we do know that will not but did not happen last night was there was no big Ovation 4 Chara off. Ovation that we all wanted him to see wanted him to get obviously not happening last night but but fans returning to the Garden March 23rd, so that'll be 12% capacity which I believe is just over two thousand people. It's not it's like a little over two thousand people getting that I guess the branches just moved to Texas and then you can have everybody there for the Ovation just for one thing. Everybody goes all the Bruins fans take them down to Texas. Boom. You get the whole rink. I guess you can scream and yell as much as you wanted a hundred percent capacity, but how excited are you do you think this is a good start this do you think it's a good idea that fans are returning one day off. I mean, I think it's a sign of the times that things are slowly getting back to normal right where you've got, you know more vaccines being rolled out more people what's do that or herd immunity the cases are dropping hospitalizations and debts or most importantly dropping quite a bit across the country. So I think it's a positive step and was always going to be the case right where you were expecting. In a situation where more fans would be let in the building as these cases drop that was I think always the hope of things for the NHL and for every, you know, pro sports team is to have more sandwich year goes on so I think it's definitely a step in the right direction two thousand fans seems very fair. I imagine if Case is continued to drop or you know, as more vaccines get rolled out. I'm sure that number would go up quite a bit. So by the time you get to main gym in the playoffs that you know, we could be looking at what 40% 50% maybe for the guy in which I think is a victory consider, you know? Yeah, how bout how miserable the last year's been..

Texas 12% today 40% last night two thousand fans Evan Mera Dost March 23rd three goals each episode over two thousand people hundred percent 50% Chara last year NHL Ki Kanna Ryan one day Boston Sports Journal Bruins
