Celtics' 3-0 deficit is surmountable to Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz
"Former Red Sox slugger and Hall of Famer David Ortiz knows what the Boston Celtics are facing and understands about coming back from a three zero hole. He's done it leading the 2004 World Series champion Red Sox from the three games to non deficit in the American League championship series against the rival New York Yankees. If you do it in baseball again and then the next question will be will you do it in basketball. Right. Exactly. And if you're doing ambassador, you gotta be the same city. "Ends October 10th back with Alex barth of 98 5 the sports hub and you can follow them on Twitter at real Alex barth, apparently doesn't know how to center himself on his camera as we're doing. Podcast. Are you with us? Yeah. Okay. You could move over to your right just to see, I get because there's this. I don't have like a perfect way to balance everything here. Way to prep for this podcast, I appreciate it, Alex. You come through for us all the time, you're awesome. All right, let's spend some time as we wrap it up on the Tampa Bay Rays and the things that the Red Sox is going to have to do. First of all, they're starting pitching is going to have to control the top 5 batters in their order which figure to be. Randy, rosarina, playing left field, wander Franco, the super sensation rookie that was brought up in mid season and he hasn't disappointed. He's their shortstop. DH Nelson Cruz, who has experience up the wazoo. This will not be in a bigger than life situation for him batting third. Batting fourth cleanup is third baseman yandy Diaz and batting 5th, second baseman likely to be batting 5th Brandon Lau with a lot of pop. He had three homers in a game I believe recently against the New York Yankees a blowout win as the Tampa Bay Rays clinched a hundred win season in the best record in the American League. That's one thing. And the other thing is their rotation. The Red Sox are going to face Shane mcclanahan in game number one. And he it seems like we say this every year, Alex barth, about Tampa Bay pictures. He had a breakout year as a young picture in the ray's rotation. He's a left hander he had a ten and 6 record this past year, 3.43 ERA. He starts game one a little more than a year after he became the first picture in MLB history to debut. Make his debut in the postseason. He posted a 3.01 ERA with 99 strikeouts over the last three months of the season. And, you know, he is a guy that is really, I think in a try and give Tampa Bay a boost right out of the gate. Yeah, I mean, I think they've got a bank on him because without glass now. And we talked about this a while ago, like, I thought Tampa was out of it without glass now, because I wasn't a huge fan of their pitching rotation now. Mcclanahan's come on and sometimes it's hard to project with rookies right and he's obviously been that guy. So he checks a box, but Ryan Yarborough struggled Michael walker's struggle. So if you can, if you're the Red Sox, and this is obviously easier said than done. If you can take a game started by mcclanahan, you really put the raisin corner. It's not impossible for the Red Sox to win it if they lose game one. But it kind of becomes tough for the race to win it, right? If they lose it because then they're pitching potentially against totally blown up. So mcclanahan is a pivotal player in this series. I don't have a splits in front of the Red Sox when it pulls up right now because I'm actually curious, but I think this first game is going to tell us a lot..

Excellent choice fourteen years with the boston. Red sox and i hope that he comes back in a coaching role or some something in the front office i hope he stays with the organization and they continue to get a lot of benefit out of him because i think he has a lot to give i think his career ended a little bit early thirty five in the end more whether is basically career ending injury. Baseman you do you yeah. Six three two hundred thirty pounds ten time all star three time world series champion seven times silver slugger award. Mvp end the world series. Most valuable player david ortiz. David i have. I have big papi on my my bigness is bigness. Yeah yup yeah. Fifty five point three career war eight thousand six hundred forty at bats. Two thousand four hundred seventy two hits five hundred forty. One home runs a career batting. Average to eighty six with wapping seventeen stolen bases. It's quite a bit guy bigness. I wonder how many of those on the back end of a double steal first base. And he's got somebody on on on seconds still in third who's taking trotting second but if that's the case i'd probably it on the second game on say try to third base right a little bit of a wild throw maybe ended up under the under the tarp or how many of those were overthrows into into center field. That's what i'm saying. Swinging amiss on on a hit and run wild thrown into center field. And he's standing on. He's like just going to scoot this way real quick. So you mentioned world series. Mvp he was. It wasn't two thousand four. It wasn't two thousand seven. It was two thousand and thirteen right when he was thirty. Seven year old season. Yeah so and the thing that goes along with that to To me is that it's not just the fact that you know he's thirty. Seven is that he was an integral part in two thousand four thousand seven but his biggest role was as team leader. A veteran and experience guy. Who's like you know. I really wanted to world series. Let me let me carry the way here And and he did so super cool I actually have one more guy on the on my like one modern player on my list. I can't tell you who it is. It's the same game. Yeah you'd probably but no he's bigness. Play fourteen years with the red sox right twenty years total in the league and Yeah he's he's going down. Yeah i always forget i. I always forget. But there's a long time i did not know that. He's been six years in minnesota exactly and it's funny because he was kind of like toiling as a borderline defensive liability guy i base and then he goes to boston and at the time you know that was the theo epstein years. I wonder if it was just a player. Development thing could have been a. He saw what he was good at and said this is what we're going to we're going to do with you. Here's your new role Fit right into this system. Then he was top five. The mvp voting hit after his first year in boston. He taught by the mvp voting for the next five years. Actually yeah and an all star pretty much every year in two thousand nine. He was not fourteen fifteen. He was not but otherwise from two thousand and four to two thousand sixteen all-star every year but three..

You're smart ted williams a hall of famer time. Mvp two-time triple crown winner. Nineteen time all star six times batting title five times major league player the year and probably will forever hold the title as the last guy to four hundred yet he probably will. I don't see anybody else doing that. Hit four zero six in nineteen forty one. It's asking the magic number that is it's the it's unobtainable is one. Yeah it's a. It's a huge deal well and he. He sits fourteenth overall and career war. That doesn't surprise me. So he's that great of a hitter. One twenty one point nine is his career war so offensively though if you take just his offensive war. He's six of all time and that makes sense because you know what he is the all time leader in on base percentage for an to an on base plus slugging. He's in second place he's right in there. Yeah isn't this crazy this. We're talking about a guy that you can't tell the baseball story without. Yeah no for real. And when i i was pretty when i learned the significance of four hundred who ted williams was. Yeah and for somebody i mean. I wasn't even a teenager. You know i. I might have been like nine or ten years nine or ten year old to to learn about that and to remember it and be able to understand the significance because your dad says so. You know that and the the dimaggio fifty six game hitting you know those are those are story. you can't get away from yet for sure So this that's that's cool. So not only is ted williams american hero because of baseball. He is literally an american hero because of his military service. He served three years and in the military during world war two. So you know like everybody else about. He took that time off baseball pretty much. And then in nineteen forty six came back and he won the mvp slugged six sixty seven three forty two batting average and a four nine led the league with the four ninety seven on base percentage guy. All the guy did was get on base. Only did whose win. All he did was win win win. No.

"Mets blogger. Yes she started on the mets blogs you just kinda of work your way up through Through local local channels ended up. Espn and she's them. I'll be. I think that's really cool. So amazing don't poop who the blogs and don't knock the hustle. Yeah exactly newest. She was going after it. If got the thompson the hassle with you'll make it to where you want to be because she's exhibit a of that we've seen in the last ten last ten to fifteen years in the in the sports world in general we've seen a lot of that For anybody who knows who. Bill simmons is. He's the owner of the ringer. Used to be at the espn. He used to have a blog so long ago. That it wasn't. I don't think it was even on the internet. He what he did was he would write his blogs email to his friends they email to their friends and their friends and they pass around. Eventually he did get a website. He got bigger. Espn picked him up. And that's how he found a success. He wanted to be a writer. And and from what i remember he was he was hanging around newsrooms but not really finding the success. What he's really giving them a shy. He was kinda getting people coffee hoping to get assignments. And here he is. He's one of the richest guys and her media. It doesn't matter who you are just as long as you got the hustle and the chops to do you'll you'll find your spot and and And i think that we've seen a few examples. That looking at one right here with sarah lang's so super cool and this is the thing we've talked about this before. Don't let anybody tell you you you can't do it. You know what what was. He said brig You're not done until you're not work willing to work hard enough to get into something like that. Yeah and if they're dumb enough to hire you're smart enough to figure it out there you go. That's what i always say. Now let me let me throw a disclaimer out. There were two white dudes right. So we know that we've benefit from a ton of privilege and don't understand some of the things that we saved may be offensive to certain certain Demographics we're doing the best we can to to give. You are honest opinion and if so if we said anything that that makes anybody upset about these you know these women really breaking the mold here in and doing some great things. Then please let us know. Drop it in the mail bag and say hey. Change the language you know. This is how we prefer you talk about out Women moving up or dif- different disadvantaged. People are different demographics. That might not always get the the attention that that everyone else gets. Whatever it is if you if you ever hear anything like that we're really trying to be as inclusive and as Respectful of of all types of people as we can so drop assembly line in the mail bag and we'll we'll be sure to address it one hundred percent. Thanks for that break. I really appreciate that And with that. Let's take a quick break when we get back. We are going to get too previously recorded segment of our red sox mount rushmore. Just put it on. No i told you. I don't want to. It'll be fine no brig. I don't wanna get punched in the face. It's way more fun than you think. I promise you're the crazy one not me. "You've offended me now. No i was just gonna say no no so While i was out there with brad we did play. Mlb the show. And i did get. I wouldn't say you kicked my butt. Brad didn't kick your butts. No no it didn't hear at least one of the times. I held my own but mlb the show is doing a two thousand twenty one summer circuit tournament thing. Whatever they're calling it with words and What it's going to be as three open qualifying tournaments and anybody who's eighteen or older in the united states and canada who has a copy of mlb. The show can enter the tournament. And what happens. Is these three dates. July twenty fourth august seventh and august twenty. First are the three dates that you can join the open. Free for all qualifiers. The top sixty four. Excuse me the top sixty four participants across all all three open. Qualifiers are going to be eligible for the grand final tournament which is going to be a single elimination bracket I think there's a semi final round in there as well that single elimination but but the point is there's up to a total twenty five thousand dollar cash prizes a bunch of in game benefits and different things like that that you can unlock stuff like that so there might even be game tickets that you can get to go to live baseball games and It's it seems really cool so for those of you who do play. Mlb the show twenty one. Those of you who are interested and didn't know about it. Now you know thought it'd be fun for our for our audience here that there's a way to maybe make a little money plan. Mlb the show and If you enter the tournament we wanna know if you win. We want to know and we will show. I'll wait. we don't wanna cut talk show. We'll hear about your experience. So i think that'd be really fun so let's definitely well and it's it's it's free to enter right. All you have to do is get on and play. is that right. Yup that's my understanding. Anyway the the details are a little bit scant. And maybe it's just that. I don't speak Online gaming tournament language Just true but at the same time like i said it was paid to play so awesome. Yeah glen play. Let us know if you do like bricks. we'll get you on the show. I think if you give it a try let us know. We'll bring on because i think that's cool. That's a lot of fun our last thing. We have here break. We haven't we have what is believed to be the first female broadcast team for major league baseball game and this is happening for those of you listening on the first day. This episode releases is today tuesday july twentieth. It is mlb's youtube game of the week. The orioles vs tampa bay rays.

"It's funny that is funny but But yeah so. That's that's really it though i mean front office organization Coaching staff. Everybody turned over. Since then i mean might be the same cleveland. That's about it. And i don't know get no no no no. I agree but i do i. It makes sense and and whether it makes sense cohesion. Wise or moneywise. I don't know i have no idea. But i think he's a trade to be honest with you and that's the real question would have to be prospects and cash and you know conditions player to be named later that kind of thing i don't know. But and who would you move out of your roster you know what. What kind of depth hit. Are you going to take any way. I don't know i don't know i'm not sure but i will say this though even if you wanted to keep daubach for space you've got a pretty good d. h. with rizzo well and. That's not a bad point. It's not a bad point at all is that that's the thing about the american league with the d. h. Is you've got a little bit more flexibility with guys you can. You can bring in a guy here like you know. We've got the depth figured out there but we could always use better h so no doubt well and then. He rotates in once or twice a week at first base. That's not gonna hurt anybody yet. Exactly right yeah because you go glover there so totally see i like it but i'm not you know i just want the i want the tradition. You know i want the store. i don't. It might make sense in baseball terms. But i want the story i want. Rizzo back in the farms are in the system. He came up in. That's all yeah. And i and i can see that i just i don't know i feel like the move. Just make sense though as well but anyway speaking of the red sox though The red sox were playing in new york this weekend. Alex purdue go. He's now fielder for the red sox was He typically played centerfield. I believe it looked like he might have been in left when this happened. I don't know yeah but yeah anyway Fan so he tossed the ball into the stands to read he said in houston or to red sox fan. A yankee fan caught it. And i'm assuming by the time he tossed it he had turned around and was head back the dugout and sounds like the fan through back adam and hit him with it. Yup yup. That's exactly what happened. So there was a whole lot of yellow and a whole lot of cussing and a lot of finger-pointing eventually they they caught the guy and they rather than arresting him which doesn't make sense to me why he wasn't arrested because that seems like something you would get arrested for. But he was removed from the stadium and banned further life from all thirty stadiums by mlb. That is a good move. The only concern. I have brig is. How do you enforce that..

"For a few days and one of the things that happened while we were hanging out was we both got a notification on our phone and said jock. Peterson was traded from the cubs. The braves what how we were so confused. We're looking at each other like what you see. The only one who has some kind of elaborate hoax is insane. So so unexpected. And i mean there's right is right before game. Started again after the all star break and he got the wheels turning for both of us. You know who's necks how much. How much are the cubs gonna tear this thing down so so bring who do you think who do you think is next kaby and I think he's going to new york. The yankees or the mets. I don't know. I haven't figured that out yet but i can see him in either team could. Yeah that would make sense I saw i saw somebody. Pros trade from the mariners to like between the mariners and the cubs the other day. And i was like yeah right. 'cause it was like a mariners fan site you know like s patients had something like that and so was like okay. You got me. i'll bite and looked at. I don't remember who the two guys were that the marriage were sending with cash To the cubs would like not outside of the realm of possibility. I mean i don't right it's gonna. I'm not saying. I think it will happen. But that was one of the better trade proposals that i've ever seen. Because they're two top level prospects both outfielders and And i think there was like a like a like a large amount of cash. Like i don't remember exactly but i i saw a like i've seen much worse. Fantastic proposals than what i saw that. Yeah yeah okay. Here's my question. Here's my question do you do you bring in b to play right field or do you try and rehab in for.

"Your wedding around the baseball season my boyfriend and i have been jokingly guess not jokingly talking about getting engage but i guess talking about getting engage recently and he's like brit. I know you really want a summer wedding. But you're dating baseball player so sad to say that's probably not going to happen however we have a date in mind where we love the number eleven. It's been very prominent in our lives. So if are engaged this year eleven. Eleven in two thousand and twenty two may or may not be. Our potential wedding dates will stay tuned for the listeners. But i think it's super cool that you guys were able to get married down in florida. Have that warm weather. You had the graffiti artist. David garibaldi their pacing. That gorgeous hand painted photo of the yuki new. he's so talented that that was literally kissing at the aisle. There's a photo that are running photographer. Took and he gave it to david garibaldi in like during cocktail hour and he only had like forty minutes to prepare and memorize it and then he goes in he. He's a performance artist so he you know set up his little tarps on the dance floor uses basically his his hands and brushes than he just jumped swipes. His fingers plays really great music. Like what is it. What is it. I really become good. Like we've noida would have to be and it was amazing. I've loved the bright colors that he added to it. So you guys for those of you. That are going to be listening to this podcast. Obviously you can't see it. So i'm going to describe it to you for those of you. That are watching live or may watch it on the youtube. Obviously you could see how gorgeous it is for those of you that are listening is essentially a really up close tight shot of both matt and chelsea kissing at assume it probably was them kissing at the alter in it so up close you can see the detail of them just given that sweet tender kiss probably after they said i do and i love the fact that he incorporated some pretty colors in the background. So you see like a fuchsia. Purple secrete some blues. It's very gorgeous very pretty. I love gives a pop of color to her living room. I believe she's in right now..

"I love hearing that story of how he was so supportive of you will obviously as a friend and now currently you guys are married and maybe you guys will have kids some day where i want to hear proposal details sanderson that he did it in front of your family and your friends on the front porch of your connecticut or now connecticut home that you guys bought together. So what was that whole experience like. Were you super shot. Did you kind of expect anything. That day gives us the details yet. No i did not. I'm still shocked because i. I'm on such a planner. I thought like. I'm gonna know when this is going to happen. We got hamas like for my birthday. Mike convenient how like i. I was really like wondering what was going to happen. I i. I had a feeling. We're gonna happen soon. You know we have talked about it a lot and we bought our home. I'm in now that we live in now in connecticut and it was long process into houses and in love with this one and you made the offer me ended up getting the offer accepted on my birthday. Which is december twentieth in. It was really exciting. At the time i was still in will in new jersey and i was living with my mom down in jersey because it was close. Matt was between connecticut florida for baseball and in boston as well and as we bought the house in we really weren't going to be able to fully move into it until like that spring or summer. 'cause we bought it in december and right before he even for spring training which usually goes down middle january. Like now ish we just the home and we just got some some furniture. We were at a furniture store getting a the master bed south abed and chairs and stuff and were walking on the front porch and or walking down the front walkway and all of a sudden mailing. Put his arm around me and like what are you doing. Like he's like you know like we've known each other for a long time like this is so exciting. We just want this home together. Akin to like officially move in with you fretful lake make at the home and i love you and i'm like only cautiously so mushy like had no idea it was coming. We go up front pushes at four steps in. It's like announcing he kind of cuts me off before going to the front door and go down when nina. I'm like oh my god like i don't even know. He said he could have down there side. Like you're annoying. I would have been the yes. I was so shocked. I was just like oh my god that i was glided than obviously reposited is really sweet. It was just me and him and it was on the front porch His home in it was so exciting. And we have. We can't put the ring on and all of a sudden the door opens in lake. Who's here like we just bought this home. One minute ago. The door swings open. And it's my brother-in-law and our law and he's surprised i'm like aj often. In the door opens like a long staircase a wind circuit disturb stilled in the balcony cells and living in right now is filled with people in everyone was watching from the windows. Like that's our entryway and here. Everyone was watching the ports. It was everyone screaming. They're betting it was my mom and my aunt my uncles my in laws. My cousin. I was so shocked People here like everyone lives in new jersey oregon in that had done such planning at all of mine is angled cousins..

"To be a pro athlete ironic. Because i married one. I was like. I spoke on my studies because business. This is what my future's like ninety to go all out on this and really focused on that. So i just to say about parks and repeat the the professional baseball personal sports play. I'm hans actually perform so it's great and then when he gets injured all right here him so sounds like you guys definitely do have the best of both worlds. You've got to still be involved highly in the sports world whether it be you helping people out whether it be with sports injury or other types of injuries you get to help out your husband and as you mentioned travel around watching baseball and just being continuously surrounded by that whole baseball life so we've been poking the bear a lot obviously we're gonna continue to dive into chelsea's wife before she got married. I believe her last name is zara so chelsea's actual last name is chelsea zara. Is currently barnes. Why we've been talking about it. She is married to matt barnes. Boston red sox pitcher. So let's just jump right into it where you guys met so chelsea actually met her husband that barnes while attending college so they both went to the university of connecticut. Matt is a connecticut native himself. So i'm gonna give some quick little stats on him. Sure a lot of you guys are familiar. Especially if you are from the new england area and you are listening. So matt played college baseball yukon pitcher there obviously for the yukon. Huskies matt is well known in new england. Currently he is a pitcher for the boston. Red sox humidity's mlb debut in two thousand fourteen and he was drafted in the first round by the red sox in two thousand eleven chelsea. This podcast obviously is not about your husband. It is about you want to hear the behind the scenes. Like how the heck did you guys meet. I understand that it involves taking some shots and you guys were at a bar called. Huskies so let's care all your experience at husky is how you actually met your husband for the first time. So what matinee had roe similar friend groups so we have mutual friends yet. Not yet i think met in two thousand eleven. yeah and at the time was bartending. Have used to bartend aside a great job. I loved working there. It's all my friends and it was a great gate and there was one time when i wasn't working i was there it was. It was really the only place to be at uconn on thursdays for nickel night. I don't know it got so expensive. Maybe not doing code and that was there. He had actually just been drafted and he had come back to visit yukon and it must have been the offseason at some point and he was apparently someone i had heard what setting record for. Who could buy the most shot in a single setting or whatever what is up boss fanatics. Thank you so so much for tuning in.

"We have the incredible chelsea barnes with us alive and she's actually a doctor of physical therapy and mlb baseball wife and she's going to be sharing all types of details about what it was like going to college. In connecticut meeting her husband's they're a little bit of some funny stories about her. Getting lost at disneyworld so please stay tuned with us chelsea. How are you. Thank you for joining me today. Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here super excited in before we even get into where you grew up. So she's actually a new jersey girl by heart spent a lot of time in connecticut and actually lives there now. But i think it's super freaking bad as you have your doctorate in physical therapy so that is actually where we are going to start. So guys listen up. He is both beauty and brains kaiser. Dpt which actually stands for doctorate in physical therapy. She actually told me. I was very long and exhausting process. Three year graduate program that included fifty two weeks old full-time clinicals and lots of studying and earning out. So let's just discuss that whole process of getting your doctorate in physical therapy and why you chose that career so have always been really good. At math and science i loved to generic. And i love school. Want to uconn so gordon. Raising jersey went to uconn for college. And i was a bio major. I didn't know if i wanna stupid. Premed or be a pa or a pt. And i shout at the time. I wanna say like my software college i shouted a ton that some are and i shouted with. Pt's surgeons In love with his therapy. I was napoli myself and i love like the exercise process of better. I really specialized in orthopedics fusion. So i love that stuff. And it was long program. So after i got into. School is a little questionable. Three years of grad school. Like wow too. I really wanted to but but but now i my doctor working for like two and a half years now. I love my job and in all paid off. So what exactly does it mean to be a doctor of physical therapy sort of walk the listeners through the process and what these clinicals were liked and you have to work on people's certain body parts learn how to do certain types of massage therapy. I understand you recently. Newly got certified in trigger point dry needling which is very important for professional athletes as well so we will talk about that shortly but let's just got to walk the listeners. Through what exactly it means to get your doctorate in physical therapy and what you went through so being peachy has come along. Why like i think when i was in high school i had pt for me for soccer. I didn't realize how intense of a professional ones. I thought College pt enact and then a few years ago. I wanna say like eight or ten years ago. Pt became a mandatory doctorate in the us. Meaning it's a clinical doctorate so obviously different than md with the dp. Now i have the ability in my colleagues have the ability to treat with depending on your state and your insurance.
