"Boston mayor Marty Walsh's issuing updated guidelines for city for travel the mayor is banning any business travel both foreign and domestic outside the state in addition the city is strongly encouraging its workers to avoid any personal international travel WBZ TV is Paula Evans spoke with the mayor your concern this is a very fluid situation is there any plan to close the Boston public schools not right now we're not having plans but what we are doing is preparing for the potential having to close the schools there's a lot of moving pieces in talking to some of the experts with the telling us is is sometimes the schools the safest place for our kids because of of the the unlikelihood of them contracted the coronavirus but that doesn't answer questions the doubts to come into the schools or the teachers come into the schools so we have a very aggressive plans cleaning our schools but we are we are looking at you can't just simply because schools because a lot of other things happen we are we are putting together a plan in the event that we have two social sharing so all the answers they're going to I do know one of those biggest concerns from covering the schools is that children get two meals a day in the Boston area schools so in the event of schools would have to close no decision right now but is there a plan in place for how that will work during the night the help with children including checking what kind right now and we have to close one of our schools in Boston the Elliott some of those kids are on free and reduced lunches so what with the plan is in place now will so we're gonna have a kind of a smaller version of what's going on so we have to figure out how would we met how would we get something set that to that magnitude delivering food to families are awake and they pick them up so all of that all of those answers will have balls question what answers for very soon in the event we have closed schools what's your message to senior citizens they're very worried here is that people over sixty or at risk and often they live alone they don't have what you want seniors to know about senior centers I think first and foremost the the wrist to seniors is that mean meaning that worried about if you get the virus what happens to physically that doesn't mean that you are in a different position to get the virus or so being careful means don't go into large crowds be careful is don't be shaking hands and see is a love to hug and instead of people don't do that if you are at home and a family member comes over that's not feeling well just ask them not to come is basic I'm constantly washing hands in it just out of the public said the public ground for now that that's really what it's all about it's about keeping people safe and I had this conversation my mother show coming up this agency about how to conserve my mother I'm on two days ago to same on these people call the house you know you know feeling well just because you you want to keep people safe and and and people that are sixty and older I mean if you're if you have respiratory issues are you sick don't risk it is not worth

"We never gonna talk about it whenever gonna talk about racism because we're gonna stay something wrong or come from the privileged. Well, that can get very far you know, through the eighties, being colorblind contrite like that must be somewhere. So that is really similar. Yeah. And I think similarly to that race conversation too. I do think that there is some responsibility for people in the majority culture of whatever we're talking about to do some of their own education. So they're not putting that burden on so that I'm not coming to you with every single question I have about LGBTQ or trans issues, because if all of your friends did that, that's all you would ever get to talk, you know you, right? Right. Hopefully agree to that about, but at parenting him time right now, like I am probably one of the only non binary people that a lot of my friends know, and they're not all that much information online that they, they don't really even know where to start. And so me personally, I'm I'm thrilled to get, you know, twelve Instagram messages at day, saying some kid and my son, third grade class just came on transit. I don't know what to do like. Thank you for acting me because I really want to help you help that kid. And I definitely don't want other people to put that on every transport then. But personally, I'm thrilled when people come to me just because I, I would love. I'm outgoing. Obviously my whole life is on internet anyway. So. Fine with met starting point for share. For listeners who don't have that transfer and that they really earnest in wanting to learn more. Are there good books that you recommend? Sure. I love George by out Gino on total, go that story of transferral who I think she's in like third grade maybe and it really read when she was nine. So it's a appropriate for younger kids to write, and I gave it to my girlfriend's mom's Christmas last year. So I that luck is I actually recommend it more to adult than hit because I think it's a super fast rate is the door of all its heart warming night, you know? But it's so simple that nine and understand it. I think it's a great starting point for adult who don't really know what all this means. And then I love red crayon story by my bowl hall, which is about a crayon who is has a red paper on it, but it's a blue crank on. So the crayon is getting read and wrong, and you know, they're like, come on draw some strawberries, and they're all blew up, try harder next time. And then at the end, you know the crayon meets another crown that asks the crown to draw an ocean. And he said, I can't. 'cause I'm red, and she says, we'll just try. And then he drives the beautiful blue ocean and it's so beautiful. Oh my gosh, I maybe I'm blue, you know, and it's really beautiful store for it. And I think for dealt to, but I, I love that one for kids. I think that's a good one for my kids school. She goes to a Boston public school, but they have that book in every classroom from kindergarten up through fifth grade mandatory in every call just because it's a great story about even anyone you know, just covering their their identity. Any other recommendations dot putting the words men and women on every single Prada and then charging more for the women. Yeah, that'd be nice..

"When you finished though you people think of harvard as a springboard to rich isen and and glittering professional careers you became a schoolteacher in boston yeah i i had no idea what i was going to do i am not this is why i am utterly useless it career advice because because first of all i didn't go to graduate school so right away you don't know what you know you're not planning your career very well right and so of so everything that's happened in my socalled career as a complete accident uh including a growing out of the first thing i did but but what i did to the color let me say that that may be the best career advice which is don't make a 30year plan you know i find i i must say i find it very risky and i flirted with utter bankruptcy many times and so i i don't recommend that i can i recommend dental school rethink tone recommend gambler you would have been much happier theory on that hi uh but you know i i did become a substitute teacher in the boston public school system which was a fantastic experience and that was my income and uh and i moved around through all the different schools elementary high school middle school everything and i got assigned to one of the better a perma so it was a great it's a great phrase i was a permanent substitute latin academy which is the gets you could call it the second best high school in it public school in boston one of the oldest once and and that was a really great a few years of of doing that in the meantime uh my father comes along one night and says to me um you know you really should take a look at this case i have in the office now is a civil rights case was the first time he ever had a civil rights case and it was the story of to boston police officers who shot and killed a black man in roxbury in the black neighborhood of boston where my father is from he's from that neighborhood aback when it was an irish neighborhood and and here he was a pioneering a civil rights lawsuit against his old police department the boston police department of four killing this man and for covering up uh the killing of this man the way they.
