K through 12 of course, trying to figure out how or whether to bring the kids back in the face of the virus and some political pressure. In colleges and universities to dealing with 18 to 22 year olds and dorms and classes and professors and politics there as well. Also sports. Recent data shows that in one year, Ohio State sports brought in $209 million. More than half of that came from football, So there's a lot of money that could be lost this year. Andrew Zimbalist is a former sports consultant and a Nikon professor at Smith College. This is a massive amount of money for athletic programs to be sacrificing and obviously they don't want to do that, unless it's absolutely necessary. TV contracts, corporate sponsorships and ticket sales are at stake to compensate. Schools have started cutting back coaching salaries. And because football makes so much money schools are looking at how to reduce spending in other sports, says Molly Odd at Arizona State's Global Sport Institute. It's almost impossible to overstate how important it is in terms of supporting hundreds of other athletes ability to participate. And she says financial losses this year could affect scholarships and money for student athletes in the future..

"It's February third nineteen seventy-nine. Jim Sweeney sits on his bed, peering out into the living room right now. His roommates are welcoming in Rick, Kuhn and another man guy who looks like a TV villain with a thick beard in a black coat and gloves. Sweeney's heard the stories from coon. He knows this has to be Rocco Perla. Sweeney fields lightheaded ever since returned to Boston from the West Coast. He's barely been able to sleep or eat. Now looks like things about to get worse. Coon glances at Sweeney from the living room and steps aside from the group. He makes his way into Sweeney's bedroom. COON closed. The door breaks out and giddy laughter. Tell Sweeney that he should receive a trophy for his work at UCLA. His performance was masterfully bad. He hopes Sweeney will provide an encore for the upcoming game against Saint John's. Sweeney looks out the window the falling snow when this scam started. He knew it was a bad idea, but Kuhn gave him a lot of money. He decided to buy some jewelry for his girlfriend Maura. The look on her face made his anxieties melt away. But those good feelings didn't last. Sweeney wants out. Except he isn't sure how to make that happen, he could confess. You'd almost certainly be thrown off the team and maybe thrown out school. Sweeney has also been worrying about another threat. If? He walked away from the scam. What would the mafia due to him or his girlfriend his family? Sweeney rubs his temples and tells KUNA sit down. He tells coon that he wants. Doesn't say a word. He just smiles calmly explains that it's natural to be anxious, but no risk no reward. Before Sweeney can respond. His bedroom door shoots open. Standing in the doorway is Rocco. Perla arms crossed. He asks if everything's good in here. Kunadze says it's sweeney is just feeling a little scared Perla laughs. Then he squeezes his eyes and turns to Sweeney. He says that to be actually scared is to find your feet cement as your tip off a boat in Boston harbor. Is that the sort of scared? Sweeney feels right now sitting in his warm room with money to burn. Sweeney Swallows Says No. He doesn't feel that scared. COON, slap Sweeney and he in Purley the better. Sweeney looks down at his hands or shaking, and he stands and quietly closes the door. It's February sixth, nineteen, seventy, nine in New York City outside the Saint John's alumni hall. The street is crowded with college. Kids addressed in red celebrating Saint. John's big win over Boston, College. But inside the arena Ernie Calms sits alone on the bench. Jersey Nets calm solemn during warm up with clipboards and pencils a new. They're tracking him. A great performance in this game would send his name to the top of their lists. But the game was a disaster. It turned out. He wasn't competing with the other team. His opponents were Jim Sweeney and Rick Kuhn once again. They wouldn't pass him the ball and this time. COBB lost his cool. He screened Sweeney and ended the night, only making one of seven shots from the floor. Cop Buries his face in his hands. He's ashamed, but also limit. Teammate he sees. Now's the reason why. Cross Jim Rick Kuhn is headed to the, is it? He Looks Glum. Cobb knows it's not because the eagles lost because they didn't lose by enough saint. John's was favored by nine points. They won by exactly nine. That means the cameras didn't win any money on the game, but they didn't lose any either. It's only consolation for an Nikon so wrong. COBB stands and surveys the Empty Basketball Court. This is where he belongs, and this is where he can build a future for himself. Raccoon and Jim Sweeney may have stopped him this game. Not Next. Two nights later, Rick Kuhn stands alone as kitchen sink. He and his girlfriend Barbara we just had a huge fight. Now he's eating Raisin Bran for dinner and trying to common self down. Read said she'd had it with Kuhn's evasiveness about money and she added. Maybe she should ask. Jim Sweeney about it. That's when Kuhn lost it. He warned her never to speak about the money. Anybody ever or else. He didn't need to look at her is to know he gone too far, but the damage was done. When he did meet her case. She's angrily that she was leaving. Koon Stares numbly at the kitchen window. What happened to his life? His best friend stopped talking to him. Now's girlfriends leaving. You may be winning bats making money, but he's losing. What actually matters? Just then the phone rings. Kounose knows who it is. His Old Pittsburgh acquaintance. Tommy Perla Rocco's brother, wanting to confirm that the gambler should bet on the upcoming game. This time Boston is facing off against the Holy Cross. Crusaders holy his favoured, but still it's a hard game for coon to guarantee Holy Crosses, a rival school and anything can happen at a rivalry game. Still who knows the gamblers won't accept that kind of talk. coon picks up the phone and here's a familiar raspy voice online. As, he guest, it's Tony. Perla Perla doesn't ask coon anything. He only says that there New York friends are betting and betting big expect pats Jimmy Burke in particular. COON begins to protest, but Perla cut some short. You Warns Coon to dump the Holy Cross Game No ifs, ands or buts, Boston College needs to lose biles seven points if they don't there will be problems and Perlas. You don't want to create problems for Jimmy Burke right now, not when all his solutions require bodybags. COON hangs up his. Heart pounding. He looks at a serial and dumps the ball down the drain..

He silently assesses the huge man sitting across the room, coon, six foot, five and ways an easy to twenty with thick mustache and dark feathered hair. He'll does one more line of cocaine looks up. Kuhn so Rick Tony! Perla tells me you went to high school with his little brother. Says you some kind of Star Athlete. coon shrugs shoulders and stay. Silent Hill stares at him. The boy may be huge embody, but hills. Not so sure he's big in. Mind must be nice to play for Boston, College. To either not paying for your talents. COON sits up looking more focused than before as he'll continues. Ricky deserved to be rewarded. And that's where I can help. All we want is some assistance with the scoreboard. Tony said you're up for that. Kuhn gets short. Not good must be clear. We're not asking you to throw games or anything I don't bet on who wins or who loses I. Bet on what's called the spread now. The spread that means that means you bet on how many points we win or lose by smart Kid. Tell me what you know about spreads. Kuhn's is wander for moment. Then he looks back at Hill. Well, let's say the Eagles are favored to win by ten points that means the spread is ten. You could place a bet on the opponent, and if we make sure the beat them by less than ten, you still win the bet. We still win the game, but were winning less points. That's something I can make happen, Rick. You're right. What's different is it's not that I win sat wheat win and we get paid my friend now. You got any other players in this with you of course. But that makes me very happy. A month later in mid, October, nineteen, seventy, eight on the campus of college, the Robert Center Gym Echoes with the sound of shoes squeaking on the hardwood floor. Today the Boston College Eagles wrapping up their first basketball practice of the season. The players take their final shots and rick. Kuhn sits alone on a courtside bleacher lacing shoes these last few weeks. COON has been thinking long and hard about his meeting with Henry Hill and every time he does. His heart beats fast with anticipation. He desperately wants to make some money to get back to how things used to be. Years Ago Koon competed in a different sport. You was a baseball star, and even played in the minor leagues. Kuhn saw just how sweet life could be a well paid professional athlete, but then his fortunes took a turn coon struggle with a shoulder injury, and soon had to give up baseball. His dreams were dead. He thought, but then he got a second chance. He landed a spot on the Boston College basketball team. He was playing competitive sports once again, but this time he wasn't getting paid. The gambling scheme could change that, but a not quickly forms and coon stomach. Because in spite of what he told Henry Hill coon hasn't actually enlisted any other players, and he needs at least one other player to join him, but the question is. WHO. He studies his teammates a head for the exit to the twenty four year old coon. These guys seem like they're still in high school. They're not serious about risk, even one to make some real money. COON size gazes up at the rafters searching for ideas. When he looks back at the court, something clicks as if Accu-. His friend Jim Sweeney walked out of the locker room. Sweeney is the Eagles, point guard and Co. captain as well as a student. He has an energetic balance and a natural smile. Everything about Sweeney says that he's an honest hard working guy. But his coon watches him. He thinks there's more to this golden boy than meets the eye. Sweeney regularly asks coon about his time playing baseball in the minor leagues by living the Good Life. Coon to his feet and hurries to catch up to Sweeney. He greets him with an unassuming smile and asks whether he had minute talk. Moments later. Kuhnen Sweeney step outside the Robert. Center, your met with a crisp fall win which Russell's leaves the campus, maples. As they walk away from the Gym Kuhn explains the full plan. Sweeney stops checks to make sure they're out of your shot. Then demands to know. Did coon just ask him to cheat? So Sweeney repeats the plan again and promises him. It's not technically cheating is to shaving off a few points here and there it's harmless and it'll make a buck. Sweeney crosses his arms and tells coon. It sounds like cheating to him and for a moment both remained silent. Finally coon laughs and claps Sweeney on the shoulder. He says it drop it. It was just a joke anyway, but sweeney is warily. COON gives him another PAT says they should head to class. As they walk away. COON remains quiet. Thinking to himself Jim Sweeney didn't say yes, but then again. He didn't say no. It's later that same week. Henry Hill winds his way through the busy foot traffic in Queens New York City. He stops at a dimly. Let Bar known as Robert's lounge. He'll turn around and gestures. Paul maisy and Tony Perla who follow behind him. This is it? He tells them. Inside. A man sits on a corner stool, noodling on his guitar while laughing with a couple of guys with thick necks. He'll waves to them. One of them stands without saying a word escorts the trio to the back of the bar. From, there, they had down narrow set of stairs. As they descend. He'll keeps looking back at Tony Perla. WHO's looking? Pale, he's nervous. That makes hill nervous to. They're here today because he'll is trying to sell the betting scheme to powerful mobster Jimmy Burke. The trio's about to meet with Burke and when they do Pirlo explain a plan. If Burke likes what he hears, he'll come on board. He'll bring with him a large national network of sports betting bookies. He'll knows that. This is the key for the whole operation for the scheme to work. They'll have to spread the bets around the country. They'll place a large number of small bets on Boston College basketball. Team and all those small winds will add up to serious money, but because the bets will be spread far and wide, they won't attract much attention from other gamblers. He'll reaches the basement level sees burke seated at a table. He's reading the newspaper cracking up on a couple of hard boiled eggs. Burke is fifty with his reading glasses and old polo shirt. He doesn't exactly look like a high level member of the Mafia or man with reputation for extreme violence. Burke looks up from his paper. He Sees Hill and smiles the to have known each other for twenty five years, and Burke Treats Hill like nephew. He'll introduces Bert to the two other men and then leaves. Tony Perla with Burke so the two of them can talk. Meanwhile he joins maisy to burks men in the corner for a game of Botchy. But. Even as hill plays, he keeps one eye on Burke and Perlas Conversation Burke listens nods. Ask questions nods again. Finally emotions at hill to join them at the table. Burt takes a sip of his drink and says he's interested in the betting scheme, but I you want. He'll go to Boston and meet. All the players involved not just coon. He needs personal assurances that all of Kuhn's partners are up to the task. L., smiles. Manatt but he feels his chest. Tighten as he realizes he doesn't know with any certainty that Kuhn has gotten other players involved..

"When it comes to college sports, the numbers are big about four hundred sixty thousand college students play every year and NCW sports. They compete in everything from football baseball to rugby, and the money is big to in two thousand eighteen NCWA sports generated a staggering ten point three billion dollars in revenue that year, the highest paid coach in college football made over eight point three million dollars. Still over the years student athletes have largely gone unpaid. Though some have tried to change that. These college athletes have attempted to make some money, even if it meant breaking the NC Double A. Rules or the law. That's what happened. In Nineteen, seventy eight when a group of basketball players at Boston College got involved with mobsters from New York. Boston - Colleges Move Classes Online As Coronavirus Spreads
"With college campuses shut down because of covert nineteen is continuing online WBZ's Ben Parker takes a look at the impact on some local colleges from small schools to large ones private colleges to state university classes are not happening on campuses these days but instead in an online world because of covert nineteen Westfield state university the school remains open while operating remotely we like to make sure everybody realizes that we are completely open for business in terms of not only serving our current students but recruiting new students for next year serving both undergraduate and graduate students he Diane Prue sank his provost and vice president of academic affairs at Westfield state they're moved to teaching online was pretty smooth so are moved to the online will promote format when it first took place I think everybody was a little bit shocked about how quickly we had to move but I have to say to you that at this point we are really pleased with how smoothly the transition has gone not to say it's perfect by any stretch but it has gone really well and I think for several reasons among those reasons having a lot of faculty already trained to teach through some version of it online format and some faculty needed a little extra support there were trainings and workshops at lasalle university a small private college in Newton Massachusetts resident Michael Alexander says their staff and faculty was already prepared to make the move to online learning now we have some advantages also university we've been DJ online for seventeen years both graduate and undergraduate levels we have a summer online program is going for eight or nine years and growing every year and it's been very successful law almost all of our full time faculty at all been trained on how to develop online courses transition to online remote ways of teaching and how to teach online and we extended spring break an extra week to bring the others up to speed a quick crash course including our our jumped up professors Alexander says though most students are off campus there are so well some who have stayed for a variety of reasons the weather right to require every single student leave her campus because some students just don't have a better place to talk and that would include international students students the home situation would not be conducive to teaching and learning people who don't have the technology to access the remote learning that loads that we turn to people who have jobs nearby and their employers still needed the work and so they they need to live here so they can attend the jumble to make money and to support their employers and so that there are any number of reasons why students would need to be here now we're down to just sixty two of them but still we have to feed them and take care of the we spread them out it will consolidated them into three residents all the great amount so everybody has their own room and their own bathroom but and they can't really teach others in the room they're practicing physical distance thing and we're monitoring that but that's an additional challenge Westfield state also has some students still on campus for some classes like biology chemistry and other sciences this lab work to be done that does pose some challenges at Westfield state proves access some classes have enough experimental work and now they can analyze data for others being away from the campus has actually been a bit of a benefit by not being there in some areas for example in environmental science you are now in different environments there are material they can collect and analyze right in their own backyards for example and do some comparison really when you think about our student population at Westfield state over sixty percent of our students are from eastern all the Worcester area that means we have to be all over the state so an environmental kind class they can now look at multiple environments in their discussions online as for where college might be in the future meeting this fall press access they're hopeful getting back to campus will be in the cards but they are planning just in case it's not we're doing a mixture of things right now and we're looking at the continuation of this semester for example a lot of our activities obviously have moved to virtual including things like virtual admissions events that we are running in the next few weeks for two students were to come to a Westfield state and all we're looking at some virtual kind of activities are only may or June orientation sessions for students and thinking about both kinds of activities for our early summer school courses both tend to be more online courses than on the ground in any case when we look at far as the fall which is double pay for some people may seem very far away but doesn't feel that way for us our plan right now Ben is to be fully functioning as a residential campus at that point we assume we will all be back on campus with our students will be in our housing area and so we continue to plan to register students in that way that's not to say that we're not thinking forward about the possibility that they may shift at some point we will of course follow whatever guidelines the governor provides for us in terms of gathering and so we'll think about different variation on what that might look like if there have to be some change in the way that we start our semester at lasalle university president Alexander says they're planning for multiple scenarios which run the gamut it's a totally unpredictable situation nobody knows anybody tell journalists should not sell so we have to prepare for multiple scenarios so we're forming scenario planning task for most other institutions are doing the same thing and and defining various things that could happen from a minor disruption in the fall to the real serious disruption in the fall which would be you know we still can use the campus for that call and and maybe some things in between and then develop a specific plan for each of those scenarios that we can put in place as as things develop or adjust to as things develop and although colleges would rather have the on campus learning resume as long as it hasn't thanks thanks despite the disruption this could be a learning experience that normally wouldn't exist I absolutely agree and that this experience is going to have a lasting impact on all of our students I have no doubt that that's the case I'm one of the things that we're trying to do through our classes and many of our faculty have talked about that because this transition happened so quickly because there's so much happening in the environment for students many of our faculty are having these conversations with students in their classes will guard lists of the subject they're teaching whether it's now whether it's social work whether it's of course in communication faculty all across our campus are having the conversation with our students because they're processing this at their living through it and I agree with you that it is going to really kind of changed the way our students and I think all of us will see the world and see our human connection to each other and so in this world of covert nineteen higher education does go on there are challenges but in some cases there's even more education I'm Dan Parker WBZ Boston news
Why Is American Money Used Around the World?
"As of January twenty twenty Japan and China each own more than one trillion dollars in US Treasury securities followed by the United Kingdom With three hundred and seventy two billion dollars and Brazil two hundred eighty three billion according to the International Monetary Fund more than sixty one percent of the world's cash reserves are held in dollars. The euro is in for second place at twenty percent when even an economic powerhouse like China holds a trillion. Us Dollars Reserve. That's a good sign that the dollar is still considered the mightiest of the global currencies. But the dollar wasn't always the world's defacto currency so what changed before World War. Two all global currencies were backed by gold and each government. Guaranteed that it's money was good for certain amount of gold then came the Bretton Woods Agreement of nineteen forty four which created the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and also established the US dollar as the new gold because the US held most of the world's gold supply the dollar continued to dominate during the post World War. Two boom years. A We spoke with Jonathan David Kirschner a professor of Political Science and International Studies at Boston College. Who Co edited. A book called the future of the dollar he explained the rise of the dollar order was on four pillars the robustness of the US economy the widespread belief in the American model of finance the wealth of US financial institutions and America's leading role in international affairs Kirschner said most of the world's monetary relations were orchestrated between the US and its political allies and military. Dependencies it was natural to be conducted in dollars. The Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate scheme collapsed in the nineteen seventies when Richard. Nixon took the dollar off the gold standard during a period of domestic inflation and many industrialized economies chose to float their currencies on the open market. At that time some economists began to predict the downfall of the dollar not that it would lose value but that it would lose. Its dominance as the world's de facto currency over the decades. Most of those pillars that made the dollar king of the postwar Connie have been toppled recessions stock market bubbles and the global financial crisis have revealed cracks in the American financial bottle and the US has lost some of its political dominance with many governments and corporations choosing to do business with China or Europe instead yet the numbers show that the dollar is still the currency that nations and individuals turn to as a safe harbor in economic storms. Kirschner said the ultimate reason is a simple one. The lack of plausible alternative. Not The dollar. Then what there have been periodic calls to shift more Reserve Holdings to the euro the Chinese are mb or even back to gold but the dollar still reigns supreme when countries shop for a reserve currency that stable secure and liquid that is easy to convert back to local money. The dollar is still the default in fact some countries such as Panama and El Salvador use the US dollar as their own legal tender the US government doesn't have to give approval for another country to use the dollar as its official currency. So what about a one world currency not going to happen? Kirschner says the first reason is political. There's simply no political will to have one world government or one world currency the second reason we won't see an earth dollar anytime soon or the whole world using the US dollar for their official currency for that matter has to do with an economic theory called optimal currency area. That states that a single currency only operates effectively over relatively small geographic area the size of a country for example not a continent or the world. That's because different regions might be experiencing very different economic conditions at the same time. One Country might be in recession. While another is booming. Kirschner said if you only have one money in the whole world and you only have one monetary authority which means you only have one. Monetary policy in reality different regions or countries would need monetary policies more tailored to their individual needs. That's one of the reasons why the euro hasn't supplanted the dollar as the defacto global currency the Bureau Paean Union itself is not an optimal currency area. It's too spread out. Which means that. E with authorities have to enact monetary policies that somehow serve economies in very different financial conditions like Germany and Greece.

Breaking Down Bracketology
"I do WanNa flip the page to Rica's point some teams. That have worked very hard to get to this point. We've got eleven teams. Charlie that have punched their ticket so far to go dancing any surprises for you in the ache you I think we have one out. West correct so In the last couple of days of the West Coast Conference Tournament Portland is your winner. And they will now go to the tournament. they upset didn't zag in the semifinals and they will catch a little bit of. Portland's game yesterday in the championship when I flew into Vegas and they're upset of of Gonzaga disrupted. That's the surprise. It's SORTA disrupted the bubble a little bit because when you when you take it to my Portland who was not going to make it as an at large but Gonzaga certainly is well now the WC goes from having one team in the field to two teams in the field. Well he can only still sixty four teams so someone has to come out of the field to accommodate Portland's entrance and that affects the at large teams on the bubble and in the case of my bracket that not Boston College. Back out of the field. Who just a day earlier had slid into the field because there was another loss by someone else so everything with this in the championship weeks at circumstances everything affects something else because it's a numbers game. It's a sixty fourteen field no matter how you slice it so going forward and these next few days. We've got some other tournaments that could affect that in the same way and I mentioned this going back a week or so ago that their watch out for the bids steelers because there are certain mid majors that we know we're going to be in the field. They've earned the right to be in. The field is at large teams if they don't also go in there if they don't go in AH automatic qualifiers by winning their tournament. Well then that's an extra team that we didn't account for and brackets and that's an extra team now that the committee has to put into the field. That's one less team that can make it from some of these bubble team. So yeah the the big upset so far has been in the West Coast Conference in Gonzaga. Not Winning it and we've got some more to look forward to. The MAC happens to be one of those tournaments where there's not going to be. Any fans will central Michigan won the league pretty decisively. This year is a top twenty. Rpi team and most assuredly will make the field but now that tournament played before no one could be one of those that affects how the bubble teams go to central Michigan. Does it also come on? Come out on top in the tournament So that's that's certainly one for fans to watch as we go forward and you're GONNA have to watch it on TV because you're not gonna be able to buy it you're watching on TV though you will hear my voice. I'm on the call on Saturday for the championship. And the more reason to tune in now on the game and you can't get into the arena so the ratings should be sky high. Now it's via going okay. So I want to over to the big twelve. Charlie would where I know actually had a chance to call some big twelve games this year and I know. Tcu In particular was a team that was really making a push. I believe there in the field as it stands right now but I was state actually Jones. Who's a certified buck gator? They upset Baylor over the weekend which was a huge deal. I did a double take when I got the alert. Baylor is bailer their legitimacy. It probably doesn't change anything for them. But what does it do for Iowa State? Well I always stayed. I had as a tendency leading into that game and and it pushed him to a nine. And what that does is it's security. It's cushion because of the ten seed. Maybe the committee views them a little differently. Not Quite not quite at that level so that he's talking about eleven seed. Well that's a vulnerable team to some of the upset potential. We just talked about so what that win for Iowa State. I think is put to rest any question that they'd be in the field although I think there was a big one anyway but it but it certainly nails it down and they no longer would have. I don't think any anxious moments watching the selection show on Monday Now it's just GonNa be a matter of where do they go? And whom do they play? But I think that's what did for for I would say for sure and it would what it did do for. Baylor though while not it's not gonNA knock him out of a one seed it. Does maybe raise some questions. I personally didn't think that there was anything to worry about with. Frankly there weren't a lot of flaws there but the big twelve not not one of the better leagues in the country this year of the power. Five Leagues I think it's probably fifth and they haven't been severely tested in a while and I always say certainly did that and the it might raise some question marks about Baylor going forward. I think they can answer any of those questions in the big twelve tournament because I was sneaking suspicion. They're going to come out with a little extra in that game and it could be ugly for the other. Big Twelve teams In the big twelve tournament but that said it does it. It shows little vulnerability that I didn't think Baylor had and that makes it a little more intrigued when we get to the tournament. Time itself I agree with you one hundred percent. I know look at the box. Were trying to figure out what the deal was. And nothing really was like crazy glaring. But I do think you're right. I know a ton of folks are going to be studying that tape to see what I was able to do right well that was able to watch some of that game and when I did was really slow the Temple. They hope to threes in the second half. They made more threes than they made. Twos in the game and the believer and it was and it was so slow paced and Baylor never found a rhythm that they they say clog everything inside the Lauren Cox had almost no room to move it. Kinda dared the Baylor shooters to shoot and they just had one of those games where they weren't making shots so maybe at least down a blueprint for some other teams as to how to at least approach Valer Ago You mentioned as an example Yukon being a number two seed and I know over the past few years you have seen to have had all these regional conferences in such a favorable area. I think at the Albany region that they mostly have been seated but this year they would be projected number two in the Portland region and I think as much as we talk about Yukon not being the same Yukon is as pass. There's still a very good basketball team. Won thirty nine. Oh in their conference over these last few years in the American and I think that having them with the possibility of travel really makes this team look a little different because they aren't the same team as years pass. Tell us a little bit about how that could affect their performance. Assuming they make the sweet sixteen you're right and Seven out of the last eight years. They've either played in Albany. Bridge for for Kingston Rhode Island. So they they have not had to get on an airplane until the final four in seven out of those those eight years. But let's let's be honest earned it ju- every one of those years with the possible exception of last year because they were the best team in the country in those years too so and when when cities bid for these regionals it just so happened that that all those years those particular low cows bid and got regionals to be able to host. And you can't happen to be close so this year. Those regionals are don't exist. There is no Albany. There is no Kingston. There is no bridgeport and no matter what was going to have to get on an airplane. And you're right. I think it will look a little bit. Different seeing a yukon in a faraway place. I don't think it's going to impact on the whole Locke. Though to be honest I think the people that are bothered by the possibility of uconn going West are the players and the coaching staff. Everything I've heard from them is like. Hey we'll bring it on. We'll play wherever we'll play whomever we'RE NOT THAT CONCERNED ABOUT. Gino's been been pretty adamantly over the years but this year when the subject's soon kinda shrug your shoulders. Look I you know. I don't have any control over it and we'll go play and it will do what we do and I think he said the other night after the the American championship game. We'll do what we do. I hope I think That's sort of the philosophy that they're gonNA take me. Maybe their fans aren't happy and maybe people who who look at the tournament and see certain things as they view them. Unfair that a team that is fifth overall. My take would be the one that has to travel. Based on the fact that other teams can can drive to the region. So we'll get into the reason why you would be going to Portland is very simply that The NC Double A. Would prefer as much as possible that teams that can drive rather than fly two games that they're gonNA play It's written right in the procedures principles of putting the bracket together that mode of transportation distance from campus. Things that they consider will this year Louisville can drive the Fort Wayne Regional? Nc State can drive to the Greenville regional. So if you assume that those are those are two of the other number number two seeds. Then they're going to be plotted in those regions and then the other one being Stanford and Stanford mashed up with Oregon would would also violate one of the principles of putting the bracket together and they They try to keep teams seeded on the top four lines from the same conference separate. So they're so they're in different regions. They wouldn't even meet until the final four now. In this case the fact twelve might have five teams in top sixteen making that impossible but in years past when that's happened the committee's not put one a one and a two. They've put fit when a four again. So it's highly highly unlikely that Oregon at Stanford Movie Place Together which only leaves one region left for Yukon to go to which is Portland matched up with. Oregon is the one in the two. So that's the why behind it and I think we talked about the the what or in the case of I think the Yukon players coaches the. So what I don't know that they that it matters to them very much but it does create an interesting conversation around how the tournament is bracketed. And some of these rules. That maybe fans aren't quite as aware of in the the head-scratching that I get from from fans and social media. Say Well if you cons five. They should be matched up with the number four overall team based on the curve. And that's Maryland so they should be going to Fort Wayne. Well we don't ever. The S curve is used to plot the teams in the tournament. But it's not used strictly to place them in these numerical matchups one in eight go together. Two and seven go together. It's never worked that way. It doesn't work that way in the men's tournament. The committee will try to do that as much as possible. That's the goal. But if you've got these graphical instances at hand as well then there there's other ways to balance the bracket and. That's I think what's going to happen. This year with

Florida State routs Boston College to capture first ACC regular-season championship
"Tournament going on in Greensboro North Carolina Florida state is the number one seed it's been a bad year for North Carolina traditional Stallworth in this thing in the Duke is as one twenty one ACC tournament titles North Carolina at one eighteen north Carolina stated one ten you know there was a time where these conference tournaments coaches didn't really like they didn't like the the sort of emphasis on it at the end of the season you know they thought bigger body of work was really that what we're told your story more than going to an end of the year tournament and then losing in the second round to a team that is a little desperate that felt like you could put a statement on your season that really wasn't quite there what aid think coaches I think kind of like a little bit of the pre preparation for the NC double a tournament the sort of you know we're going through this with it how we prepare night in and night out for different teams you know the tournament run the German sounding yeah that's the that's a little bit of a good primer I do understand some of the concerns I mean look if it is you know it's it's neat when I school in the middle of the pack would set a mediocre year makes a run and get and wins the whole thing and then all of a sudden you're like wow they they now get to go to the NC double a tournament and some really good teams are not because this conference is it really going to get a ton of at large bids the ACC not so much when they're gonna they're gonna bunch of teams and it all but there are some teams are going to need some work there are some teams are going to need to show up and win some games and be impressive and I think that's the thing I like watching a convincing all morning is that one of the things about this is it does give you a second chance to sort of get your season in put some put some it's something there wait you may have lacked during the regular season right with your if your Syracuse if you are you your team in the middle of the pack in North Carolina state maybe need a couple of wins but when you've got some familiarity you know the playing these teams maybe the third time during the season you know some really fun things can happen in some upsets can really can can take place and times of days I mean it's it's it's really it's that's why you don't like about it judge Alito joins us the news and observer for the ACC tournament how are you Joe great employee what is the overriding story going into the ACC with North Carolina down this season Florida state first time ever winning the regular season championship going into this tournament what is the overriding story with the ACC is going to present this week now what I'd like is there a team good enough to make a real world next week you need to collect payment I think this channel will be fine in Greensboro but it's the real question is are any of these teams Louisville worst in Virginia your you know really good enough to make a difference actually
UNC's Lost Season
"Jeff Bordello. I'm a little shook. North Carolina finished the regular season. They lose to do because that's fine we're used to that but they're the lowest seed in the ACC tournament North Carolina. So some how you would view this season for the tar heels. I mean they're arguably the most disappointing team in the country. Jeff Portillo is a college basketball insider for ESPN. And I know we have to take some other factors into account with injuries. And Karl Anthony and things like that but you know this was a preseason top ten team that like you said is going to be the bottom seed in the ACC tournament in the ACC is not goodness here. It's a it's a pretty down league you know. There are Miami. Nbc in Wake Forest Pittsburgh. None of those teams are very good and Carolina is at the bottom of all that and to me. That's shocking you know. This is one of the best of all time blueblood like I said a top ten preseason team and four months later five later. They're the worst team in the ACC. It's one of the bigger stories in college football this season and I think you could really make the case that there are the biggest disappointment in college hoops so let's go back to October. Preseason rankings come out North Carolina's in the top ten. They're sitting at number nine refresh everybody in what the real expectations were coming into this season for this team. I mean they a lot of guys from last year but they did bring in what people expected was an impact recruiting class was led by Karl Anthony Centerpiece of Roy Williams retooling effort. It's chole Anthony. Going the top freshman in the country making his debut tonight from of a raucous crowd here that the dome he was expected by pretty much everyone to be the most productive freshman in the country. That's how he wasn't high school that's where he was on the scene. He was a guy that was going to put up big points. He was gonNA put a big assist numbers. He's going to rebound and he was going to win games. That's just that's just what he was at the high school level and people expected him to to be that same player Carolina and it. Kinda set up perfectly for him because he was able to come in and this was a team that didn't have any real goto guys coming back. So they said hey collapsed. And you're getting the ball from day one and you're gonNA lead us and you know it kind of looked good. You know in the first game of the season. He was terrific. He had thirty four points. Eleven rebounds five assists debut for coal. Anthony lost a lot of stars to the NBA. After last season with the go one superstore Chambal. Whom the feeling was that? You know this team is going to be okay. Even despite the losses and along with him they brought into Grad transfer. Is that you know. We're probably two of the five or seven best. Grad transfer is in the country was Christian Keeling from Charleston southern just NPR's from William and Mary and and that added some experience at its veteran leadership and combined with a couple of other guys are Mondo Baker was a five star recruit garrison brooks was a two year starter download so i. I just think that people thought you combine the newcomers with the guys returning and even though there weren't any stars coming back from last year's team there was enough here to to compete for an ACC title and Roy Williams has done this before where his team is is written off a little bit in the preseason and under rank behind teams like Duke and he finds a way to win and that's just what he does and and I think people expected him to do it again with the guys coming in and coming back well so now you've got a team that has preseason expectations they get into. The season was the first time this season there was the first real sign of concern that the season might not go the way some had hoped. I think it was a couple of things I think one was even when they were winning the game. They won their first five games of the season. But even some of those the Notre Dame win the Alabama win. There were some signs of. Is this team going to be as good as we thought were Williams? I you get the sense. He hasn't loved all aspects of his teams. Play here today. You know he has. He has not name barely beat. Notre Dame eleven point margin was it. It wasn't addictive. How close the season opener was against Notre Dame so I think there was. Okay let's give it time. Let's let Cole Anthony. And the other freshman get acclimated and this team will figure it out but they lose by twenty five at home 'til Ohio state to start December. You know then they lose that. Virginia you know losing effort gene is not not a usually a big concern. This is not a vintage Virginia team and I think most people realize that at that time and then they lose to Wofford. They ended up finishing below five hundred in the southern conference. Terriers come to Chapel Hill and knock off a top twenty five North Carolina squad. And that's when the you know the eyebrow start raising what's going on with his team are they poised to be this massive disappointment and obviously once call. Anthony gets hurt. The wheels fall off from their breaking news. Call Anthony out four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus. Well at that point you know maybe things are a little bit concerning. But they're going to get two. Acc conference play. You said it the ACC not the best conference in the world so they get to the ACC schedule. How's that go form? You look at their schedule and you said okay they can. They can weather the storm three straight home games in. Acc play against Georgia Tech Pit Clemson and they had games against Pittsburgh Virginia Tech Miami even a bad UNC team or even a a mediocre UNC. Team could go six in Owen. Those games it was kind of the the bottom half of the league and they went one and five losing the first five games of that stretch. Seventy nine seventy seven double-overtime Virginia tech knocking off North Carolina. I think that was almost getting the end. When you look back the schedule what would be the one moment that sort of pushed everything over to the point in return honestly I think it was after Columbia comes back a long ways away. Eleven Games without call Anthony but he will play tonight. Yeah the five hundred. Unc team suddenly. Jay has a lot of juice and he'd be Miami. Nc State then call and he comes back for a home game in Boston College and you know. They weren't very good at the time but they tended ten three and six in the ACC and you know the the narrative was kind of okay. If Cole Anthony Comes back the committee will look at them and say you know with call. Anthony this is an NCAA tournament team. He's going to be on the roster in the NCAA tournament they're going to factor that in so I think people started wondering can. Unc string together. Some wins and make a late run and in his first game back. You lose at home to Boston. College straight three other time. He's spoiled return. I think that was the sign that it's not going to happen so that's not. Obviously the only epic moment we all continue to think about from the season tickets back to the first game between North Carolina and Duke. The Duke Game was a game that that could have turned things around at least changed the narrative about Carolina and to lose in that fashion. Another late blown lead. Losing to your biggest rival do comes back not to be Carolina to me. That was that was a really low mon it just because it it could have been really a season changing moment for Carolina and the way it happened it just it kind of sent them even further down into the season

"We're going eight Rome Boston College seven win. Steve. In a complimentary way. Is that a bummer or is it will take it? If you're a Boston College fan, but and you're feeling that seven wins. Steve is a good thing. Right now, a Boston College. I'm looking at the way that Boston College finished the year with the eyeball emoji again. Okay. I didn't. I did not think they were very good. I thought they were a much better football team early in the season. Then later in the season that has always been the case with Steve adagio. And I think Steve adagio if I were to revisit some of his comments after these games and during game weeks as the season wore on I think he was concerned with the way his team was playing. He knew that this team really could have been a much better team than it was. And so do they finished with three straight losses to finish? The Clemson, Florida state and Syracuse. Yeah. I I think that that's a I think that that's a season that you go back, and you look at what the personnel is. And you think man that that that team that team could have been better. Now, it's tough because you know, Clemson and Syracuse are great to maybe the top two teams probably the top two teams in the ACC. See last season, but I will maintain that Boston. College was not playing great football near the end of the season. And for we got Anthony Brown AJ Dylan like every everything had kinda lined up for this to be a Boston College sleeper season right for them to run out of steam just concerning. Yeah. It's like if you had told everybody before the season, they beat Louisville, Miami Virginia Tech. I mean wake, but whatever and you line up those wage like all right? That's probably eight nine wins. And then get there, and I guess potentially could have if if they actually played enable game instead of us having to resort to fan fiction to talk about it. But yeah, the way they finished that year losing to Florida state is where does that sound can't do it can't have that by the end of the year? Yeah. I be curious to see what the Boston College does a pretty good job of providing a window into their football program, at least from the their media distribution side. Yeah. Just one of those places. You can always expect that you're gonna catch the game right up Email and other I like to I like to keep tabs on Boston College. I'll be fascinated as spring opens up to see what kind of what how Steve adagio views this team because he offer. Does he has a no frills approach, and he'll he'll talk about his team, very openly. He was confident going into twenty eighteen he seemed concerned coming out of twenty eighteen and I think that as we judge Boston College moving forward, particularly, you know, will they ever crack this seven win run. Well, I mean, it's probably going to have to take more than just the status quo and the concern is if all the sudden they become complacent with seven wins. That's a program that's going to go to four eight real quick. I agree. Here's the good news next year's non conference schedule. It's Notre Dame year for for Boston College. But outside of that the three teams that they have an F C S team in Richmond. Kansas and Rutgers pretty good. You make a bowl game tie. You do it. For C. That's just savviness coming through give me a number. Let's see we've done that. We've done that. We've gotta do eleven. We have to do six. We have to do one. We'll do eleven. Okay, eleven we're talking Duke all over the place. My question to you. Why? Because Daniel Jones never took a step that all of us. And if you were the if you're the Dana, Jen skeptic, Dan, he no because I thought everybody else was on the same train as me, and we believe that Daniel Jones was going to have this this real finally back at full health becomes the leader of this team NFL scouts love his size.

"Miami of Ohio and they still play buffalo. So you kind of look at it and you say, you know, does this team show what it's supposed to be here at some point. And I think there's a little bit of that in the line where the fact that they are a double digit favorite despite being a disappointment, you know, again, kind of reading the context clues in the market. If you are somebody that missed the weekend or trying to catch up those contacts losing the market can be very, very important for you. Like I think there's one a little bit here to game one. Thirteen one. Fourteen Baylor makes the long trip out to Morgantown west. Virginia's a fourteen point favorite. I'm we need sort of Baylor plus points here. I think that rule is good. Underdog coach, West Virginia to me is still a team that that I don't trust that much. I think they're defensive numbers are better than what they should be because they haven't played very many good offenses. I know will Greer gonna put up some big numbers against Baylor. I think Baylor will score a little bit more than most people would think as well. So I think my games in this game would be Baylor over. Well, and again, the context clues in I'm looking at here West Virginia as been, I think, over respected in the marketplace. I think that you know the steam it they've gotten week after week. Well, they have covered some numbers here at various points throughout the season. It felt to me like they were overvalued. Now you've got Baylor, you know, with some extra prep time, but they're taking that long trip out to Morgantown which is never easy. West Virginia been a big favourite game in and game out for the most part. And then this numbers only fourteen now my numbers fifteen. So it's right there in line with mine. But again, it's kinda. What I'm talking about is you feel like West Virginia should be a bigger favorite in this role, then they actually are Thursday night in Morgantown, couches on fire, everything like that, and the numbers only fourteen so got in context. Clues can be very, very important for you out there. How about this one? He won fifteen one sixteen Miami Florida up from one and a half to three and a half market wide on the road at Boston College. Another game that I don't have a strongly on at all this. This is not where you know Miami defense is clearly the best unit on the field here. So in theory, I would wanna take Miami, but this one is moved up. I believe it was like it was one and a half or two now three and a half. So to me, the line values go on Miami, I, I would pass on this game. You know, for the purposes of this segment, I'll say my slight lean is Miami, but, but I won't. I won't bet this game just wants to be again. He start talking about context, clues that are out there Miami's not a real popular team in the sharp community. You know, because they look really good against bad teams and look really bad against good teams at Boston College is somewhere in the middle, but to see this one cross the key number of three early on in the week. See that power ratings value on Miami. Yeah, and kind of stands out to me feels a little bit significant there. All right one more game, and then we'll get into a game that you've got, hopefully. A stronger opinion on your free pick game. One sixty seven one sixty eight the cocktail party in Jacksonville, Georgia, Florida bulls off of buys, seven, reduce juicer, even money, a six and a half as repoprt back there in the marketplace with Georgia favored at a neutral site. Yeah, I think Georgia in this game, I like this one better than some of the others we've been talking about. You know, I trust Georgia more the Florida team that I know that they've looked good at times this year. I think they still have to prove it against a really good team on a consistent basis during the issue without the home game. This is not a whole game Georgia. I team that you know, had a disappointment recently. I think they're well coached team. Not saying that I think Florida, the poorly coach team. Sarah, I think Georgia's very well coached team. I think they also have the more talented team. I think this sets up as better spot for Georgia here..

"Future if you're playing that poorly against the team without its its best player or its two best players but an interesting comparison here you look back a couple of years 2016 syracuse starts owen four in conference planned jim bam actually brought this up a couple of days ago and his press conference i believe it was after the previous game out the pittsburgh game but the one before that and and a bunch of people a bunch of reporters they started every question with you guys are not one in four and conference play wanting foreign acc place out that stop exactly right you know you know you know what i'm talking about because to me i wasn't having any of it he said goal back a couple of years the only people who are worried is the media he pointed out the reporters and said you're the only guys to think this matters because in two thousand sixteen they start conference polio and foreign we know what happened after that they go to the final four yeah we know what happened in in the thing is about this pittsburgh win is now you have a chance to go on a little bit of a run you play boston college at home a much improved boston college team going to be tough but if they can somehow get that one and then get the win at pittsburgh the next saturday on the twenty seven all of a sudden you get something going and then you get ready for another tough stretch georgia tech virginia louisville you know there's no breaks in the acc time to win it is clearly now flickers as you get towards the end of acc play you start playing at miami play north carolina at duke and in a road game at boston college and then the surprise clemson team to round out the year really goes all the time to win is now i think this is the part of the schedule and conference play that syracuse needs to take advantage and it starts with boston college in pittsburgh of course you just gotta sweep the panthers talking syracuse basketball on.
