"The Boston Astros and the Philadelphia spartans and and it ultimately fall on the shoulders of one man to keep it going and And hit the past he chose to take was finally Americanizing. Americanizing this league and providing a place where American kids could play our before we get into who that person was and that sort of next step back up F for one quick second and you mentioned the international soccer league. The bill Cox Sort of run a precursor to maybe arguably what is today things like like the The importation literally of full teams and having them sort of play an exhibition schedule and even competitively during the summer months It sounds like that was sort of an existential threat to the ASL's charter and it's a unique position to own if you will professionalism on the east coast host at that time but it's interesting to me. Why did they not? Maybe use that a challenge and having beaten off. I guess that challenge so to speak as the opportunity opportunity to maybe Kinda do what ultimately came after the sixty six World Cup and two or even three depending on your read history groups from the outside that said we want to big league with soccer. I mean it sounds to me naively that the ASL lost the opportunity and needed the fledgling ruling then NASA. Although it'll be flat itself floundering in nineteen seventy to kind of kick them in the butt to realize that. There is an opportunity to do that. I guess from if that's any any part of that is correct. Why was it so dormant and were not ambitious given some of those rumblings in those existential challenges just before this well? I think it's important to remember that the opportunity that the ASL was protecting when it played its card and forced is the US FFA initials missed whatever the US soccer to to step on the international soccer league was not because the American soccer. Doc was afraid that someone's going to step on our status as a professional league it was solely because the ISIL was cutting into profits in the world of foreign tours source of bringing those other teams over The ASL wasn't interested in in the opportunity of being a major league Because again and I don't want to overstate the point because I particularly given the tenor of the Times on the issue of immigration. But Again it must be remembered. The American Soccer League was really just a group of ethnic social clubs with teams playing for the pride of the motherland No they they would use whatever players they could to bring them that gory. I mean some of the later. Ukrainian national sides when he opened cups in the and Later sixties featured Brazilians. And and. What have you they play to play In the end what the real interests of the club owners. There's was glorifying the mother and it wasn't in growing the game. It wasn't in developing American talent and it certainly wasn't in You know just having a professional soccer league in their defense. They weren't equipped for it. They didn't have the money to actually you know throwing the money and In in in try to compete and get television contracts and things like that it just wasn't any ASL's DNA and again that's why you would think the way they fought the ISIL. You'd think they would have fought just as hard against those two or three competing professional groups popping up in late nineteen sixty six Reminding US US assay here. We all don't forget us. We're here we. We had the exclusive right now and they stepped out of the way historically the Aso don that on several occasions prior back in nineteen forty six for instance Again the wars the Second World War is over. American servicemen have been exposed to the game of soccer wild while fighting in Europe. This interest in it and there was Th The individuals are interested in in maybe sort of further the professional is in the game. And it's a group of teams in the Mid West Chicago and Detroit who approached the ASL and said hey we'd like the Bay Western division and he has no thanks to much trouble and so those those individuals instead for them. The North American Soccer Football League which lasted about a year and a half. I mean but again the opportunity to sort of expand beyond its backyard and be something more than just go five Sunday league and they they they took a pass on with no regrets because it just wasn't something that group of individuals at that time was interested in it all right so you hinted it added earlier before that question circuit. Let's get into like nine hundred seventy one right. So what's changing. Now in seventy one and I'll give our audience a bit of a sort of a framing a and a and a hint that you know this sort of North American Soccer League which had a couple of years under its belt after a relatively chaotic start in sixty sixty seven and then sixty eight has its own merged unit itself was not doing all that well they the proverbial top-tier if you will put that in quotes a professional soccer in this country was as history shows down to five teams and not looking very healthy itself but the state of this. Asl In one thousand nine hundred seventy one. You're mentioning this. Really itself was only down to two teams what happens in what transpires that To begin to change some of that. And why why I guess the the final nail in the ethnic the Sol's coffin was as you point out nineteen sixty eight utter collapse of the NSL. It's in the sixty nine flew the work of Philo losing them to Cajole five teams. Just sticking it out and nearing the end of nineteen sixty nine season. The baltimore-based say we can't do it anymore. the Orioles Baseball team. We're pulling funding. We can't do this anymore and wisdom's kind of in a panic. He knows he can't run a fourteen week. So what did he go he reached down to the ASL. To in sixty eight had Had recently expanded expanded a little bit beyond their traditional New York northern New Jersey Philadelphia in Baltimore The territory and put things in in Washington. DC and Rochester the Rochester Lancers and the and the Washington Darts And in nineteen sixty nine. The Lancers beat the darts to win the title and Nineteen Seventy Losing Lords and succumbing to the North American Soccer League. Yes there we say. Two teams promoted from the I so to the show but with that I mean the afl kind of I think the the the old guard Again the the ethnic here the ASL saw the writing on the wall basically anyone who has ambition to really promote soccer and the a soccer team and no answers weren't a social club the darts weren't you know an ethnic club as opposed to New York intern. Somebody other things over there. They they kind of realized. We can't keep this going. Why bother so you get to nineteen seventy-one Ukrainian nationals one of the ISL's most story story teams and and with a lineage? Goes all the way back to thirty three if you count you know. Philadelphia Germans and Philadelphia nationals. The franchises develop jumped on amateur league. You know Newark Stitch couldn't find a field anymore. You only had the Boston Astros and the Philadelphia spartans and everyone kind of had enough and and then up steps We mentioned Walter Chisel wits Well he also. He had a brother Eugene his wits who was also good player. Good coach and he stepped in took over as lead president. Nineteen seventy one and just started hustling His first big coup was to convince the New York Greeks who were the three-time Open Cup winners from sixty seven sixty nine got them to join the League and then because at that point he needed teams. I was pretty much willing to place a team anywhere willing to host. The team manages the place teams in Syracuse and Virginia And the only play so so nineteen seventy-one on you know He. He managed to cobble together. Five Teen League only played ten gangs but separately going and more to the point he had to play started telling anyone who would listen that. And this was his phrase he was GonNa make the American Soccer League quote the American League for the American boy and and at that moment you know at least conceptually. The American Soccer League was no longer just a loose confederation of ethnic social because it was now going to be a truly professional league and again no different than ESL. Just how professional as far as you still work day jobs and things like that is is open to question but at least now is going to hold itself out as a soccer league as far as professional soccer league and and Walnut Challenge. NSL At least initially certainly provide an alternative Again primarily focusing on as opposed Dan. ESL We are going to. Americans plan. I mean in fact just the first thing Jean Shirt which did was he announced that All teams in the NFL would be required to Kylie four Americans on the roster with two in the starting lineup and while that may not sound like much it's It's you know it's four and two more than the. NFL was requiring at that time. So that sounds like a little bit of opportunism but also a bit of of vision right. I mean and I guess it takes a little of both right because you look at nineteen seventy one I mean the. NFL's just starting to maybe regained a little bit of its footing after some very dark years and some gigantic ambitions just a few years prior I mean it almost is feels like on some level. He's thinking that the NFL will continue and continue to gain some strength but but with a sort of a more. I don't know a splash. Year kind of approach and and the ASL could differentiate itself albeit maybe in a smaller kind of manner accordingly. So is that a fair assessment assessment. Or is he just trying to survive and just do a do soccer a different way that he thought was more sustainable It's probably a little both. I mean he certainly saw an opportunity in that again. Game as a nineteen seventy-one unless you're on the Saint Louis Stars. As an American you would virtually zero chance of playing this league. I if you were a native born American can less than zero Again unless you were on the stars So I think he saw both a business opportunity again providing a an alternative You know Sorta like we'll give you playground basketball's opposed stodgy you know Jim Style the NBA was playing very structured structured. But it was but I do think you know changes which was a believer any American player. He wanted to see the Game Americanized. So the it was a it was both vision and an opportunity But it's interesting to point out 'cause as you know the NFL survive sixty nine survive seventy and seventy one. The New York cosmo's which is important not not only because they're back in New York? But because Warner brothers. Communications owns the team. And while they weren't pumping humping cash into it right away. It's it was. It was a high profile owner. It certainly helps attract other owners. I seventy two. Meanwhile the the ASL oh one year after barely surviving itself in keeping with gene with goal to Americanized League. The first thing he does is the press. Call that a merger but it really wasn't. Here's -ffiliated with New Jersey Schaefer..

"Three winners on the recorded message, as always, by the way. If you look at the free games, we've put on the recorded message all season long from the end the free plays, the Paul gave you an football on the show. The free place here have been absolutely staggering the wind percentage for free games. They have been unbelievable. The entire year. We've got three four to end the year. Triple eight three six six three seven three three. You know, we talked Paul skull segments ago about Vegas. Experience when people come out, and it made me think about our conversation during game, one of this Portland, Golden State series here. We have to twenty opens to sixteen goes up to two twenty we're on the under from the from the jump, but in game it's so under that again. What happens in game betting. Look at this is now down to two a one to two what do we do? We get the over two to mid third quarter game ends around two to eleven to twelve never in doubt of your original to twenty never in doubt of your your. I mean, those are the kind of things that just a couple years ago guys weren't even playing thinking about even seeing this series. We've seen a couple of those opportunities. I'll bet. We'll see some more of those tonight in this game as well. Which is one of the things we should really touch on those engaged weddings. Yeah. We have we have a group chat, where everybody's constantly in touch with each other during these leading to alert each other of week, this opportunity is there. And that's, that's the one, one of the things that if you to. Real clients. And you're involved with us. You're involved in that group chat. It's a huge way. It's a great way to get connected and really CD and the nuances of the business such a difference from doing you just even a couple years ago. Jimmy tags. Let's talk about this game three here. Obviously history tells us that game three changes scenery can be hard to find value for the public. You guys have been looking at this game. I know you specifically have zeroed in on something you love about this game. Tell me what you see here in this game three. Well, number one, I mean, Golden State has just proven to us, you know without Kevin Durant being around for the last few games that, you know this is a different Steph curry was seen right now. And in reality, it's different Klay Thompson. I mean listen, if I could ever give anybody a few bet right now I mean Kevin Durant coming back to Golden State is about as lightly as Andrew Weena working in a daycare center. I mean I would say to, to it and have no shot. Anthony Weiner, Anthony. Anthony weiner. We get the point we get the point. But please stop with the argument that they're a better team. I didn't say that. I'm not saying all is not I'm the you a hall of fame and you guys averaging forty points a game for seven games better without a real. But what I'm saying is, you know, their bench. Their bench is proved that the haven't, they stepped it up, obviously in game one and playing a little bit better. But they benches a little, you know they're a little dry on a bench because they've had some they've had so much money invested in frontline. You know when the starting five but his folks, I absolutely love this game. There's one game. There's one side to this game that I absolutely love. It's, it's got to be the reason why you call, especially if you guys in the NBA, I mean running out of time to make money in the NBA. We notice a lot of NBA guys out the but here's the beauty of making money on a game like this. You're going to get two free games in baseball. That'd be playing baseball with three entire some folks, I'm telling you, if you don't make a call. You don't deserve to listen to this. Shown on what you slip through your hands. Give us a call. I promise I love this turn the radio. And by the way, as I pointed out the under two twenty then the over to, to that we grabbed McGee how about pulse player prop in game one. He calls me says, do look at first of all, we again talking about Durant, not gonna lineup how they play differently. Yes, I, we all share a ball better Steph, Currys player prop and game was over twenty seven points palled Cosby before the game. And he says, look at this player, prop based on what, you know, he struggled shooting threes, obviously, against Houston. He went for like, what did you go for thirty six thirty seven game? Once again, just guys when you're involved from the get from the jump on these games. There's so many opportunities that you're not playing. You're not seeing. That's what being a part of this is all about. When Paul is actively involved with this in game and before games and player props in overs and unders and things that you would never be playing. Those are the things on. I know where we. Find that value that we always talk about this, and it's all about value. It's all about relationships. It's all about having fun. It's all about having the right money management system. You need to know how much to play on not just who to play. But how much to play one size doesn't fit? All we understand that we understand some guys out there, make f you money. And we know some guys out there fighting the good fight. The bottom line is will make a program that fits you based on how much debt to income ratio yet, how much wealth you have. Nobody is going to let you play Addy league. Because here's what happens if you play at league, a lot of guys out there competitors, will do they'll push to go bigger than you should what happens is you get scared you run to the hills, and you never going to be a lifelong client, for us, patients long-term relationship. That's what makes the difference. Give us a call now. Jimmy loves the game Damon loves.

"Did and this pertains to potentially Bryce Harper in light of the deal that was handed out to Manny Machado. No, we've been talking about the two in context. Right. So this quote came from Matt Gelb who covers the Phillies. And he sources the quote to Matt Glenn tack who is the general manager of the Phillies, quote, if the reports are true. This contract will exceed our valuation. Sometimes you have to walk away. Now that could be all smoke and mirrors from the GM and the Phillies. But that quote was referring to the Manny Machado contract, which at the time when the news broke there had been no confirmation. So Matt Gelb covers the Phillies for the athletic. And he got this quote from the general manager if the reports are true about Machado. This contract will exceed our valuation sometimes you have to walk away. Now. Remember, the Phillies are one of the last three teams still alive for Machado services. We don't yet know what they've offered Bryce Harper. But here's what I know. He's got no other offers. That are commensurate with what the Padres just gave Machado. So if you're the Phillies. Do you cannibalize yourself? Do you actually up your offer just to get him to sign? When you know that he would be stuck otherwise Bob Nightingale from USA today who's been all over the breaking news joined us the first hour from Arizona, and he said, if not the Phillies Harper would have to settle for a short term deal somewhere else because there isn't another team out there willing to give him the type of years and money total that much auto just got from the Padres. Or that Harper's looking for. So the plot thickens, it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio. So we're taking your questions for asking me. Anything send them to our show Twitter after hours CBS also send them to our Facebook page. There's a spot pin to the top of our Facebook page. You're thirty minutes away from asking me anything here on CBS sports radio the rocket mortgage by Quicken Loans studio is where I'm sitting right? This second rocket mortgage is with you every step of the way to provide a seamless mortgage experience. So a lot of you are sharing your reaction on Twitter or on Facebook, which is great and we're going to get right back to your phone calls here. Coming up in fifteen minutes. We'll give you some of the reaction from the Padres camp. So one of their pitchers finding out the news. Eric hosmer who shirt a benefit from having Machado in the lineup as well. As. The White Sox react in which surprising to me. It was surprising to them. Their reaction was surprising to me. It's clear they believe that Machado was going to sign with them. So that's coming up in a special baseball free agency edition of bite me. Eight five five two one two four two two seven eight five five two one two four two two seven Terry is in Toronto. Welcome to after hours. Good morning. Amy. Good morning. All right. Listen to you on the fan, and I actually just discovered your show books months ago. Cool, and I have to tell you you're worth. Well, I appreciate that. But that's not reality in radio. But thank you. Whatever. All right. So with regards to Machado. After the crap he pulled in the World Series last year. You will notice I take it. The dodgers were not in at all on the bidding on this guy. Well, that's not true they were in, but they were out early because they weren't going to offer them the kind of money that he was going to get that he was seeking so money or years. They weren't going to go as deep, but they were in initially. They did try to offer a deal and get him to stay. Okay. Now, the gentleman I believe it was from Washington. Said about the attendance of Padre people. I'm afraid he's wrong. I was listening to MLB earlier yesterday. And there are thirteen teams in MLB that had worst attendance figures than the Padres say drew more than two million left here. So well, this is sure to boost their attendance, no doubt. I've heard Padres fans on social media and their psyched. Doubt it. But you know, what what's really funny is that I don't know what school is agent went to. But he failed math because the two eighty that was reported the socks were offering albeit for what eight years. Is a much better money deal. Then the three hundred million that he got from the Padres. All right. So the and there were incentives Terry, so the the incentives and the White Sox could have pushed their deal to three twenty maybe three twenty five. Those were the reports the difference is that none of the money was deferred. And all of the money was fully guaranteed from the Padre. So there in lies the big difference. Right. He wanted the ten years for sure, but he also didn't want to have to deal and incentives. He wanted to have the entire three hundred million guaranteed. Non deferred. Okay. Yeah. Well, that's that's what mattered to him. I think it'd be made a poor choice. Yeah. I don't think you're alone in that opinion. Terry, thank you for your call from Toronto. And listen, thank you for being abreast of fresh here. Starting at two in the morning. These times thing the only thing I don't like. Here in Toronto. You get cut off at five thirty. Well, I still keep talking, but they decide that they want their own morning show. It's understandable. I know it's you have other options for listening. If you ever choose to okeydokey, Terry. Thank you JJ is listening in Honolulu. JJ welcome to after hours CBS sports radio. Thank you for taking my call. You're welcome. I'm kind of the same way. With a lot of a caller Manny Machado de Padres. I think the Padres too much. And my my thing is now what is the plot seeking for Bryce Harper. I think no. No. Any other options? Besides the Phillies nine Kim. Hire them. What shuttle right not not a deal that would be as long for that much money total? There might be a shorter term deal that would pay him per season, but not this long-term guaranteed money. So if it's not the Phillies, then it's kinda back to the drawing board. So do you think he might have like? Shot himself in the foot by picking that offer. What staying with the national news trying to get a faster and get that long-term tenure contract? Oh god. I know they want a contract with the nationals. You are right before the end of last season. They offered him the same thing that Machado just got ten years three hundred million dollars to stay put. So it's going to be really interesting to find out, right? Do the Phillies cave. Do they say we want him so badly that will give him a little more than Machado? And we'll and we'll make sure it's ten years. Do we give Scott Boris and Bryce Harper what they want because we desperately want them or do they go the opposite way and say, you know, what we've given you our final offer you can either take it or leave it knowing that there aren't any other teams out there offering the same because the Padres also had an offer to Harper which obviously they've they're not they rescinded that. Now, they're not offering Harper and Machado both this this amount of money. And so the Machado taking the Padres deal means that the Phillies are kind of alone on their island when it comes to that length of a contract for that much money. Right. I mean, that's that's the interesting part word of Bryce Harper goal for how much and for how long of a contract. I agree with you. Interesting part. I'm just waiting. I'm just dying to see what happens me to get. And where he's gonna go. I would agree with that. And I think some of the the answers that we've gotten with the Machado situation, for instance, that the the White Sox were still in on it. But that he wanted to have more years all fully guaranteed money. The fact that the Phillies were also still in on Machado until Tuesday morning. How about that? And so could you imagine if he had accepted Philadelphia? What would that mean for Harper? All of that stuff is fascinating to me. Yeah. I think the money because I I watched him in the World Series. I thought he would have. Proved himself when he got traded to the dodgers, but he didn't show much. The World Series. I mean, if anybody should get that kind of money is somebody like pets, so JD Martinez. Just exaggerating. Mainly like, I said the plot thickens. Yes. It does take my. Well. Thank you for listening in Honolulu. JJ have great. I guess it's still for you. It's still your Tuesday evening, right? Yeah. Eleven o'clock that right. I love to keep track of all the different time zones. So I hope that you sleep. Well, JJ. Hello to you. Alan is in Toronto. Alan welcome to after hours AJ. Prowler? He's been there since two thousand fourteen and he's constantly rebuilding. They were seventy seven and eighty five in the first year last year there were sixty six and ninety eight. So you know, one is gonna make a difference of maybe five win such all say tried to buy the complete puzzle. Look. A few years ago it completely failed. I don't like Eric hosmer. To ground balls. Hits ground balls anymore in baseball. He's like a dinosaur. And good perfect travel three hundred and fifty days of sunshine average, temperature of seventy three degrees. It's the most perfect perfect place to play for the weather wise, you know, well, I would say this though Machado is from Miami. And while weather is nice. And all the fact is he's this was one of the reasons why he was reluctant to sign with San Diego. He doesn't want to be so far away from his family. And so he actually is not he was not super excited about being cross country and three hours time difference from his family. And and so that was kind of a concern for him was one of the reasons why it took so long. Now the question of his credentials. I can see that you know. He's a selective hitter with he's got a quick back. He's got series pop tall fields clutch hitter to and defensively. He's got good range and strength. Whether he plays second base shortstop is not a question of prudential has credentials. He's a better defensive third baseman than he is shortstop. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I'll give you that. And the, you know, I just don't make ten ten year deals. What happens if he gets it by bus and all that money goes down the drain? Thanks can happen in ten years. I just don't wake back. Well, if he gets hit by a bus than there would be nobody to pay that's really morbid Allen. Okay. Sorry. For harper. He hasn't made the franchise players as he was promised defensively. He's not a standout media does have plus range innocent and. In right field in has a solitaire. But I think he's he's overrated compared to Mike and look at Mike trout. This is this is the best player in baseball. And the. Beat AD and eighty two to pass three or so one player. Okay. Make that much difference. He's also been injured a bunch, but I would agree with you that that one player can't win all by himself. But he definitely has an impact player what he's healthy. He's just been injured a lot. And and look at Chris Davis would happen to Christianity took an abrupt turn into oblivion to five last year much more than they've been those alliances. So it's you know, he said, I'm sure they wanted to show him the money. We give them the money and show him the door to anybody. So that's why I don't like term deals him. All right Allen, thanks for weighing in from Toronto. Always great talking to you, Amy. Thank you eight five five two one two four two two seven that's eight five five two one two four CBS Andre on Facebook says it's good for baseball that he signed with a team like the Padres. Andrea. I appreciate that breath of fresh air reaction. He says I didn't want Machado or Harper to go to a team that was already stacked like the Yankees. Boston Astros, blah, blah, blah. They're here. And the Padres will be a contender in the west for the next five years. The fathers are coming. The fathers are coming. I know I'm in a weird mood. I can't really help it. It's because of the fish. I still smell like a fish. Would you like to know why? I know you would I'll tell you when we start asking me anything, I will tell you. Why I smell like a fish? "So a lot of you are sharing your reaction on Twitter or on Facebook, which is great and we're going to get right back to your phone calls here. Coming up in fifteen minutes. We'll give you some of the reaction from the Padres camp. So one of their pitchers finding out the news. Eric hosmer who shirt a benefit from having Machado in the lineup as well. As. The the White Sox reaction which was surprising to me. It was surprising to them. Their reaction was surprising to me. It's clear. They believe that Machado was going to sign with them. So that's coming up and a special baseball free agency edition of bite me. Eight five five two one two four two two seven eight five five two one two four two two seven Terry is in Toronto. Welcome to after hours. Good morning. Amy. Good morning. I listen to you on the fan, and I actually just discovered your show, but six months ago, cool, and I have to tell you you're worth seven figures. Well, I appreciate that. But that's not reality in radio. But thank you. Whatever anyhow. All right. So with regards to Machado. After the crap he pulled in the World Series last year. You will notice I take it. The dodgers were not in at all underbidding on this guy. That's not true they were in, but they were out early because they weren't going to offer them the kind of money that he was going to get that he was seeking so money or years. They weren't going to go as deep, but they were in initially. They did try to offer him a deal and get them to say, okay. Now, the gentleman I believe it was from Washington called it said about the attendance of Padre people. I'm afraid he's wrong. I was listening to MLB earlier yesterday. And there are thirteen teams in. MLB they'd had worse. Attendance figures than the Padres daydream more than two million last year. So. Sure to boost their attendance, no doubt. I've heard Padres fans on social media and their psyched. Doubt it. But you know, what what's really funny is that I don't know what school his agent went to. So do you think he might have like shot himself in a book by picking that offer? What what the nationals or trying to get faster and get that long-term tenure contract. Oh god. I know there was a contract with the nationals three hundred eighteen years. You are right before the end of last season. "Unbelievable. They gave them a four nothing lead in the seventh inning. And they've allowed in three innings. So let it get to an eight four deficit. As Steve Pearce comes through again. And laces a bases. Clearing double into the right, center field gap and the Red Sox taking eight four lead. They bring in my eight interfacing with the bases loaded and two outs. And he has one in the gap. And it is now eight four. And this team was given a four run lead. And they gave up three in the seventh one in the eighth and four in the ninth. And I understand the manager is going to take some heat, and he's made some mistakes, and I wouldn't have handled. It exactly the way he did. But you know, what? At some point these guys gotta get some outs. These are the guys on the team kenley Jansen closer and best relief pitcher. He can't be given up home runs. And if this Red Sox team is around listen, let's be honest. This is the World Series. They just in for all intents and purpose. I mean, I guess anything could happen. But they're going to go up three one. Negative win the World Series. That's a World Series winning Dublin the gap. And they've done it all year, and they've done it all postseason and you tip your cap. But this dodger bullpen is awful. Awful. Now Clayton Kershaw is going to have a big big performance. To stave off elimination. But it is eight four top of the nine two outs. Kimbrell all set to go to come in the bottom of the ninth. Can't still can't get anybody out. He's probably gonna walk this guy. He's just he's frustrated thrown his glove at the ball. It's over. Surprise Dodger Stadium isn't clear at cleared out yet you now traffic gets out there. Barrasso, four nothing and turned around and gave up eight runs over the next three. It didn't. Blame the manager. All you want. But as bullpen stinks. Eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six back to the calls Brian in New Brunswick. What's going on Brian? Good. How are you man? Sorry. I catch you off guard there, and there's a base hit by Bogart's run. Make it nine four. This game is gonna get out of hand. That what am I talking about must certainly will? We'll be able to go to sleep tonight and not have to stay up till three o'clock in the morning. Have the wife Helen at you? Are you watching your phone in bed? No, Honey, I'm not I swear I just, you know, I'm actually actually writing poetry you right now in my notes. I didn't stay up all night watching it. Yeah. I'm hoping I'm hoping hoping your Yankee fan hope all hope is lost. All hope is lost. The Boston Red Sox are winning the World Series. That's it. It's over. I mean, anything can happen. Of course. But this team is too good. As soon as they made it I thought I completely agree with you. I felt the winner the Astros. The Boston Astros series is gonna win the World Series. Absolutely. I want to get onto the giants. Let's do that. Then brian. My question here is everyone talks about the giants tick. And obviously Barkley leading as a junior from Penn State. You know, he still another year of eligibility came in right? Very very quarterback heavy. In the draft. I mean last year. The Browns up there. They got nothing aiming. Yeah. Guy in shock. Everybody taken in. I I don't think. So I think I think most people if you listen to the giants and the way they were talking about it. I think most people felt come drafts. I may be maybe the surprise was early on. But I think by draft night. Most people expected Barkley to be the pick. Exactly. But. They still had nothing to build on. I mean, that's my number one. You're going with your quarterback, you still even look on the numbers. We darkwa gaining anything crazy. No, no. Running back. But. Well, that's what they felt. And thank you for the call Brown. They felt they didn't have a running back. They felt it was a position they were adding a soup talented guy at where they didn't have anybody. They didn't they had darkwa in Gaul men who I think can run the ball a little bit. But you know, now, it's it's a it's a pointless. It's a moot. Comment, but they didn't have a running back and they felt ill. I needed a running back. They felt this offense needed plaques and pass and it does and he did. But the offensive line's not good enough to even make that running game. Plausible? If you watch the game they can't run on first down run on first down. If they attempt to run on first down they're getting a yard. And it's thirty eight thirty nine. A second second nine excuse me. They have no running game. Even with his unbelievable runner. And that's why I felt the way I felt. You don't build your franchise with a running back. He cannot be the central piece of the building. He can't be the foundation a quarterback has to be the foundation. And they were in the spot to do it. I said if they felt if the season fell apart last year, and they went six ten and we're picking seventh or eighth or ninth or whatever I wouldn't have quibble about it. I wouldn't have went nuts. Screaming trade up. I know you're in the situation you're in. But they were they lost thirteen games. And they were staring at one of these quarterbacks right in the face. And then when the Browns took who they took and darnold was there. Everyone thought they were gonna take darnold up until like the last moments when they went Mayfield like leading up to the draft. Darnold was the first pick. Then like there was a report that day or maybe the day before that they were gonna take Baker Mayfield. And nobody believes that even then. The minute. Baker Mayfield came out of the Commissioner's mouth for the first overall pick. The giants should've been all over darnold should've been the pick. I think clearly you could say it was a mistake not to I remember taking phone calls. What would it take to make you feel like the pic was right? It took away winning a championship with Barclay and Eli and that's gone. It's gone. There is no championship with Barclay Neela. This team is rebuilding. They're selling off pieces. They're going to retool this whole team. They're going to figure out how to figure out this offense of line. They're gonna the tearing it down. You're gonna have a new quarterback. And my fear is you're gonna have to pay a lot of money for an average guy when you had Donald for free. Why shouldn't say free but on a rookie contract? That's how you win. That's how the Seahawks were able to build the legion of boom in the backfield in the defensive backfield. So they will have that defense because they had a an excellent quarterback on a rookie contract. You can build a roster. That's how the jets are going to have ninety million and cap space next year. Because they're paying a rookie quarterback. Speaking about the jets, we had some news Schefter is reporting that Khalil Mack. For the bears is going to go through a morning workout day of tomorrow morning. Just to see if he's going to be able to play. And if MAC is out of that game changes, everything changes everything. Also, it sounds like the bears wide receiver Robinson will not play he's questionable but all signs point to him not playing that's not as big a deal. Gabriel and they have some other weapons in the quarterback has been able to make things happen. Even without Robinson having big game. So that's not as big a deal. But you know, it makes a difference but Khalil Mack. You know, what he was able to bring to that defense. The first couple of weeks of the season is what buoy them to this this record and this defensive performance and without him. It's a different team. Now granted I really Donald's going through this game without any weapons. I mean, they don't have. They don't have any receivers playing. It's. Powell? Wa priors gone. Well, he wasn't much. They've they've nobody we'll see what cannon is running back, and you would expect to be the featured back, and that's really when this offense is at its best is when they're able to run the football. And with no MAC that's going to make it a lot easier. So we'll see maybe the giants. The jets excuse me catch a break and one of the best defensive players in the league misses the game for them. And they have a chance I'm sure what get your if you wanna bet the jets get it in now because the minute he's eliminated from the game the lions gonna drop about four or five points. That's the kind of player MAC is. Eleven fifty five on the fan McMonagle here with you one more hour one more hour. It looks like the Boston Red Sox are gonna win game for the World Series. Although kimbrel continues to not be able to strikes which is unbelievable. He just walked the leadoff man in the ninth. But they're up by five runs. I wouldn't I wouldn't count on a miracle. So it looks like the Red Sox going to take a commanding three one lead. We could talk about that. We'll continue talking about the giants. I just gave you the MAC news for the jets. We have it all covered here for the last hour. I'm here, folks..

Twenty three seventeen Alex Smith was officiant hundred sixty three yards and a couple of touchdowns and the other final that is in the Texans beat the bills twenty to thirteen. Josh Allen did leave this game. With an elbow injury for buffalo to Shawn Watson a touchdown pass to Andre Hopkins. Who made a terrific catch falling down in the end zone. So Houston back to five hundred three and three the bills falling to two and four a few other games that are close to completion. But not quite there yet. You've got the chargers leading the Browns big thirty eight to fourteen they will win that game. They'll go to four and the Browns are gonna fall two to three at one. Melvin Gordon has run for over one hundred yards and three touchdowns. Elsewhere the falcons trying to hold on against the box Atlanta leading thirty four twenty nine late stages of. Fourth quarter. Matt Ryan is throwing for three hundred and forty five yards three touchdowns. But Atlanta with injury issues at the wide receivers spot as well. Muhammed scenario left the game with a hip injury Calvin Ridley left the game with an ankle injury wild game in Cincinnati between the Steelers and Bengals and it has gone final as we are speaking. Now the Steelers come back and beat since he twenty eight twenty one. This was a game where the Bengals took the lead late Joe mixing the go ahead. Four yard touchdown run with a minute eighteen to go and all the Steelers do is put together a seven play seventy seven yard drive in a minute. Eight ending with Ben Rothlisberger. Go ahead touchdown pass to Antonio Brown with fifteen seconds left. And that was all she wrote. They would get the two point conversion and Cincinnati. Couldn't do anything with the final seconds of that game. So Pittsburgh back over five hundred three two and one with that win today the Bengals fall to four and two big win for Pittsburgh. And they get it on the road. Incensio inside the division. Crazy game in Miami. Between the bears. Is and the dolphins. They are headed to overtime tied at twenty eight. The bears had taken the lead in this game late in the fourth quarter and then Brock Osweiler who was starting in place of the injured. Ryan tannehill struck back immediately with the game tying seventy five yard touchdown pass to Albert Wilson. And ball teams would have possessions thereafter, neither did anything with the football. And so going to overtime tied at twenty eight at MetLife stadium in New Yorker, excuse me, New Jersey, you've got the jets leading the colts forty to thirty four. It is a one score game. This game should not even be close as Jason Myers of the jets has gone seven for seven kicking field goals. The jets have had trouble getting the ball in the end zone. They scored three times in the end zone. But again when you score literally ten times, you'd have more than an eight point lead. But it's forty to thirty four under two minutes to go. The jets do have the football. And that's where they stand coming up in a little while you get the Broncos in the Rams. They're just underway in a frigid Denver. And by the way to be sixty one in Denver next week. So the weather crazy everywhere ravens and titan. Is about to get underway to Sunday night game. And it is a good one. You've got Pat Mahomes and the chiefs taking on Tom Brady and the patriots Foxborough Kansas City five and New England three and to the Monday night game features the forty Niners and the Packers in baseball game. Two of the AL CS tonight in Boston Astros up one game to none Garrett. Cole facing David price. We'll take a timeout when we return Danny's keys to the game. Then it's the Cowboys end Jaguars. You're listening to the NFL compass.

"Today. The fact that I want to ask Pete let me ask you. We talked about this last week after the you guys did your podcast on the McGregor in could be fight. They both were suspended, but that slap on the wrist type of thing or the the lead up to something else. I mean, they're still doing some valuations, and there's going to be some sort of. I don't know if a trial or there's they're looking into it. It's a temporary suspension. It's very like do in ten days. Anyway. Yeah. Let's see getting suspended for five days. It doesn't make a difference. Is he pitches on six day? You know what I mean? But there's gonna be I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a longer suspension at least for Habib Connor. I'm not sure how long I'll be suspended for you still hasn't gotten his paycheck either Donut. There's a whole big thing. And he doesn't even want it now because now one of his teammates who through a project Connor. He's pulled off a fight card in the future who's supposed to be sitting facing Conner's teammate arm Lobov, which is all kinds of stem stem from this issue and. He said, I don't even wanna fight. You can keep them money. I'll go somewhere else. So it's turned into a whole this whole chaotic thing. This is great someone talk about two point five mill something like that for three point five mill his paycheck where he made over two. I know the visor about two point five two point five percents on something close. Okay. They will will not bad. So we got a DVD on my mind. We got giants jets. We got NBA starts this week. What do we got right here? We got nets on let's end Knicks on Wednesday. So they'll be citing the season. And we'll see what happens. Let's go to Kevin and Stanford. Kevin you're on the fan. Donate. What's happening? I'm hanging in there, man. How are you? Not bad not bad. Just a couple of ways Yankees go about this. If they can slide Torres over the shorts. Shortstop, and you know, go for second baseman a Bopper. You know what I mean? So, you know, but it depends. How about you know, child is gonna cost them. You know, I know they got their heart set at Harper now because you know, that lefty bat here, they don't have they're not left destroyed a lot of righty batters that gang. If you got him, where's he playing? Oh offer. I don't know you gotta do something with that. You know what I mean? That was the boss. He's a mistake hitter. Just look what he did in in the playoffs. Not that you knew that was going to happen. You know, he had a lot of garbage time home runs. The back games. You know, I. That's that's shining. You know, I I don't know about that. And then you got judge. That's that's almost four hundred strikeouts. You got between about out there. You know, you know, they're going to strike they went to a power. Side. And you know, like like the matching. But look what happens when that doesn't work. They look at they they got a spanking by the Red Sox. Yep. Team would header some pretty like Boston Astros is a proven fact now, and there's another analytic I'm worried about you know, no since all these bullpen crap. This is only been happy over the last couple of years. What's the analytics on these guys bouncing back from you know, what I mean these guys are getting taxed yard during the year. Look at the end of the year. These guys hold it up. You know, what happens is they use them so early and he looked fresh, and it looks great necess- the tone, and until the end of the everybody's talking about the vaunted Milwaukee bullpen, and they didn't do too. Well today, I tell you what the Mets got the formula. They got three nights. You know, maybe four guy go six or savvy, but we need some help badly in a in a ballpit. Maybe the pry Brenton our way, you know, we need help and need a ballpit at third baseman. You know? But but the thing is with them. You know, look did not one young GM wants to come here. And if they don't wanna work for well pie. We're going to get stocked with age and guy, and it's going to suck again. And one more thing I went out and tried to fight my cousin out in Chicago last week. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. He got he got knocked. Anyway, you got knocked out in the four day. He got pushed through the ropes to the first. Do you right here to ratchet? Great, and he was waiting Susie stuck in head back between the road. But an opera broke his nose who. But then in the second round he knocked came down. This guy's never been knocked down either. He knock him down. And he said he froze he said, you know, soon that trapped his head. Instead, they wanted you know, it started out to finish them off. That never happened to him. He said the moment what little big Barbie doll. He got. He got hit with you know, like I eat our body parts. When it gets the roads he was coming back shot him right across the apple. Yes. Yeah. It was awesome. It was an awesome experience to Saint Mary it all the way in and everything that was my first experience ever going. It's not like that. Bay was awesome. I tell you that he'll be back. You know? All right, man. Good night's. Appreciate it. Let's go to Philip a freeport, Phillip. What's going on? Tony is it true. An argument about getting the chance out of your garage at Erez. Don't not. Come on the Yankees came. You know, we all wanted to be down. You know, we all want to see the World Series. We all thought, you know, be there. You know, he bring you to the mountain top. I guess what? They lost thirteen times a year to the Red Sox. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it was it's a letdown. When you win that many games. But it shows the flaws they have. And now they've got a bigger problem with with DeeDee. And what are they gonna do? Well, you know what? I mean everyone's talking about Machado. I mean, you can't move. You know, you're. Second possible rookie of the year. There was a lot of things that were weird in that series. They lost two games to Boston by one run. Now, our Heke take out into har- ever. No. That's a real head scratcher. I mean Reagan the records of, you know, historic people doubles as a rookie and all these things that we're really baffling if the trend also is leave guys in for three Eddings four names. And if they get you there that follow that. But you gotta pick a lane. Tony. I know. Wouldn't do harm me? Do a game of the guys that brought me here got gotta play. Because if that's the case if you're if you're gonna bend struggling guys and have been the first guy to sit down something you wanted to subject you Tony. I swear to God, I love I love talking to you. I'm not trying to kiss you. But maybe I would say that. Go. Don't look like a four. Correct. You've been around a long time. Billy Martin could you imagine. This is on a regular field all set up properly stake in the playoffs. If I'm not mistaken before you let me go. Morton wanna Reggie Jackson? Yeah. These guys. It's like a wiffle ball game or game field. It's open. But if you don't hit a home run, we'll make it out. I was watching. I I can't remember the battery in the early game with the dodgers and the brewers I think a dodger was up left handed batter. And of course, you know, there's a guy playing short right field and the battle. He just smokes one hopper right to the guy in short, right. Regular defense. You got to base it too. Right. But if you could go the opposite way, you take away that if you dig about at some point these these batteries are going to realize by me hitting into this shift. I'm losing points in my average, which eventually hurt me in an. I home runs a great. But I better start going the other way. Because nobody's gonna come up too. Because you hit a ground ball heart out to the guy in short, right? I mean, you you hit right into the shift. They're playing you. Hey, yeah. We'll put this guy short right because he doesn't know how to go anywhere else. I bet you. If you took everybody you took the third baseman the shortstop centerfield in the right field. He put them on the right side. You hit the ball left field. You had at least a double maybe triple if you could run how many guys could do that. I wonder if you said, look, I'll give you a thousand dollars. If you can take the ball the opposite way. Now, the money would intrigue a lot of guys, but you wanna to do. But do you have the skill set to do it? And if you can do it for money should do it for the team because maybe you win you get on base and the guy behind you. It's a home run. But that's not the mentality anymore. Eight seven seven three thousand seven sixty six sixty six more baseball when we come back. Yeah. We sorta stopped paying attention racked up a lot of it was stressful. He blamed me for my credit card debt, and I blamed him for building that man cave. It's awesome..

"Yankees had a remarkable season. They won one hundred games, and they are the they had to slog their way through the unfairness. I think it's unfairness of a system where you win that many games and you have to play that play in game. And they want it. I hate calling it a wildcard series. I know I'm technically wrong America. When I say, it's not a series. But I'm just I think it's stupid to call a series a one game a one game play a one game series doesn't make sense. The problem is Stuart that your Yankees team. And I know you guys were so close last year to that World Series and you get high expectations. I'm not making fun you here. Boston's just that they wanna Boston one hundred eight games this year that is remarkable. And I think we're gonna find out. Clearly, I think the Astros are the better team in the postseason are the best team in these playoffs. And that's starting rotations. The main thing I would point to although Chris sales that he did return back to near normal in this series. Obviously bode well for Boston. I don't. Think if you're Cleveland you can feel like this is a disappointing season. I know you got swept by Houston. Houston just that good this year. And I know the Yankees fans and some of them out on the other side of this wall are really frustrated really angry. I get it on the cubs fan. I haven't we didn't make it this far. I don't think this shows in any way that the Yankees failed. I think it's just a reflection of how much success Boston has had this year, and we'll continue to have and that Boston Astros series assuming that Boston who's up to one right now in this series holds on. There's a lot of baseball. He played in. Obviously, it's only the fourth inning. The Yankees are historically great at hitting home runs. They could put a lot of runs on the board really quickly. But assuming Boston goes up against Houston. I think we'll be talking about in the days ahead. One of the more dynamic and interesting championship series National League or American League. We've seen period end a statement. No more qualifiers in baseball in a long time. So I feel bad for you, Stu, and I know what it's like to give you a hard time because. A cubs fan and suffering is sort of where I've always lived. So I just like to share it. But that's a tough challenge. Go against Boston. And you guys had a hell of a year. I just think Boston is that good. I think the Astros are that good Cleveland when they play each other. It's going to be pretty dynamic, and we'll certainly be all over for you here on CBS sports radio. Brian Billick former head coach NFL network analyst gonna join me here on the show. We'll talk about Patrick Mahomes will get into drew Brees in his place in the history of the game. And we'll look forward a little bit to this upcoming weeks action in the National Football League. And what coach thinks is going to happen. How things are gonna play themselves out. Brian Billick coming up on righter than you with me. Bill Ryder next here.
