Chadwick Boseman's Family Defends Anthony Hopkins After Oscars Backlash
"We can touch on the oscars which just happened this past weekend. i like. i said i didn't watch them. Did you guys watch him. No one watched the yes. Nobody rocks create. Nobody watches award shows anymore. Yeah or outright and reasons but one of the big ones that like nobody has cable anymore down. That's a good point actually remit if you already have like a plan like table yeah. I'm so i watched it. I watched all the way up until like the last half hour. I still like the big. The wards stop watching. Yes so i guess for for some background so this one viewership. I guess for the first time in a long time it was under ten million viewers where i think last year's was over twenty million so pre big drop off and then another twist they did towards the end was they did best picture before best actor and i guess best best actress. Yes before black before both the lead acting categories. Yes no mad. Land won best picture but then the big disappointment at the end was so walking. Phoenix came out to give the best actor award. And i think a lot of people were hoping it was gonna be chadwick boseman but it ended up being anthony hopkins and he was not there. He was asleep. Apparently and then joaquin phoenix walked off stage and that was the end of the show. And so i think a lot of people were not only pissed that chadwick boseman did not get which his family has already said has come out and said we don't feel snubbed but a lot of people were upset about that and also it ended on such a low note.

"Of throughout the whole rhythm of the thing and i think it kind of like. I'm sure you've more to say this. But i feel like it's sort of can muddles the narrative away from what should have been very clear narrative of the night of news terms closure becomes only second ever woman to win best director and all these years for a woman of color to win and this very female lead movie wins. Best picture exactly. I think that it's difficult right because we're coming off. The kind of the high of having just finished the ceremony but really seeing the trees for the forest right now. We really are saying the trees right now. But i wanna be very level headed about this. Look the awards actually mostly went to the right people almost universally to the right people like i can't argue with basically any of the win as the main categories. I actually say tweeted before the ceremony. That my vote for best actor anthony hopkins. So i'm not upset by that way. And i actually think that was the right person to win. And you i will say are a rare person who seen the father was not seen that. I have seen the father. I am both an anthony hopkins. Stan and libya coleman complete est. So i had seen the father in preparation and he was amazing in it and i think is the right one f best actor. I think that putting the award at the end of the ceremony and quite clearly making the guests that you going to be finishing the ceremony with a big tribute to chadwick. Boseman was a terrible mistake especially because they really rushed through the memorium this year. It was like very very i mean they had a lot. Fella goes on fast forward fast forward. They could have given that a big moment. I thought that was a real shame because the ceremony was actually. I thought the ceremony was really good. I loved the start with For jean king. Doing a walk. Through as all of the presenters names were on on the screen. It was generally a very good ceremony but that mishap of not putting best film. Best director at the end was terrible especially in a year when a woman was winning best directed because i actually felt like they really undercut khloe. Zhao's win and chloe. Zhao really could have been the center of this ceremony and rightfully so because nobody was really really great. So i think that's a real shame but i think history will remember the windows and i hope that everybody her more remember and watch the winners as well as it's a really good lineup usually is incredible daniel columbia in judas and the watch that yesterday so good really good in that. It was wonderful. There was a lot of. He's also damn lead actor by the way but whatever he was definitely the lead actor with him and lakeith. We're both lead. What both leads but they were both nominated to supporting their choice by the way so stupid but anyway i nuclear a very good win a promising when a wonderful whenever original screenplay i had wanted to win for best actress as well but francis is great. Yeah i really really good oscars. I just wish they hadn't like with the ending. Felt very tennis. All the debate about the order of play it really was and it was an era. And that's what it wasn't the end of the day. It was like a real just a mistake for no good reason but here we are happened. Much love to everyone who really wanted to see. Chadwick has have his moment. I don't think chadwick boseman and to be defined by whether or not he won an oscar. Everyone is going to remember chadwick. Boseman he is black powder the you know. He's a fantastic actor. He was a fantastic actor whether on the oscar and it's a shame that they structured it in such a way that it made it feel like they to cutting him in the end. Yeah it's just one of those things. Where like i think you could have done the normal order. It'd be flip. Because i think i don't know if austin systems actor goes before actress it usually does in the ceremony that you could have had actor go second and then have actor win and then have a big moment for everyone actor or potentially chabert and then commercial break and then best picture. You could have done that if you really for. Some reason wanted best picture to be before actor and actress. You should have done actress last because actress was the one that was theoretically the closest race. Right varies man was quote unquote like a lock save. You know. he didn't win but actress was always up for grabs. Nobody who's going to win the award so you could have just kept the tension going for that one at the end instead and that would maybe be more appropriate but like ultimately look director. Picture should be. I think usually it goes director then actor actress picture which i think it's fine about works. Yes totally fine. Yeah just yeah. Actor was like before like the technical astounded wars and before like animated short and it was way too early. It doesn't make it doesn't make any sense and by the way souls shouldn't have won for best automated feature but i can about that somewhere else to continued. I guess Answer thank you very much for being on here for having me in brooklyn to this weekend of tennis and movies and fun and podcasting now filming recording obligation so maybe sound a little bit different than usual but hopefully sounds pretty good and more thought from you. I was gonna say ben. Thank you for being here. I'm so glad that we both got fully vaccinated. Yes everybody at home. If you can get your vaccination i'm johnson and johnson very proud of my johnson and johnson crew and it really makes a big difference for being able to see friends in your life again so it's really nice. Yes so if be responsible up until then as much as you can and then like enjoy your friends because then it safe. And that's the point of the vaccine and it makes you safe and yes. Maybe there's marginal marginal chance of whatever but you can't live your life at that. Just be free and once once you be safe so go to belgrade or also giving vaccines down. Get your vaccine. Live your life and will see you next time Brief thanks to our backers..
Anthony Hopkins Won His Second Best Actor Academy Award on Sunday for His Performance in "the Father
"Came out but joaquin phoenix the winner of best actor last year to present. The best actor were now. We have been talking for months about the expectation chadwick. Anthony hopkins won best actor for the father anthony hopkins who did not attend the oscars and did not attend any of the satellite spaces so this show ended basically on a freeze frame of a photo of anthony

"Because chadwick boseman is not meant to be film star. People like him where he's from how he is what drives him a not meant to make it. There's no glamour. How he grows up. His mom's us is that hose down two jobs of night shifts to keep the family going to town. That's a place called anderson south carolina. Big small four hours from the coast along drive to the mountains in between places. You've heard of quiets. Most of the time he's got two older brothers chadwick wants to be the old one when they play basketball in the yard once address. Better than the middle one. The oldest one is about to higher power. He'll become a preacher when he's grown so is the middle one who first shows chadwick away out. Kevin wants to be a dancer in a town where boys aunt dances. What is that. that's what the parents say when they first here but they support kevin and chadwick goes to watch the rehearsals. The shows stands in the wings and looks at the bright lights the performance. The quiet one likes drawing likes shooting hoops he watches and he learns and he's thoughts to think he's in his junior year at high school when a kid on his basketball team is shot and killed. How does he cope. He thinks about his brother and he writes a play about it. He stages it at their school and as he tells the story trying to find meaning in the recent past he sees an alternative future. I just had a feeling that this was something that was calling me. That's what he'll say later. Suddenly playing basketball wasn't important when he goes to college is an art. Corsi does not spruce one. He goes to howard university with a proud african american history reading about black icons black. Pioneers john coltrane james baldwin the original black panthers the protesters the politicians he will newton bobby seale to earn money. He teaches acting classes in harlem. He gets a place on the field. Of course one summer at oxford university console to go and then finds out someone's paid someone to to knows doesn't know then that is denzel washington but he remembers it when he does how it felt. It did for him and it's a struggle of the next few years. He moves to brooklyn sits in coffee shops. Writing plays making one. Americano lost all day that's hip hop in his place. African theology new influences on old art form but the world around him moved slowly when he gets a part in a tv soap opera. He looks a script sees that his mum is a junkie and his dad's abandoned them. He thinks that's not backstory character development. That stereotyping that's lazy. That's helping no one. So he speaks to the producers. Why are we doing this. could we change it up. Can i this. And he sat. That's how they deal with it. Recast his part. Give it to someone else. So this is where we need to talk about. Numbers movie history representation. His the three biggest movies in the us in nineteen seventy six. The year chadwick spoon rookie star is born yet. "Held on Sunday night in London. As well as best film. It also won best director for Chloe Zhao and best actress for Frances McDormand. The BAFTA voting system had been changed this year after complaints that the awards were doing too little to encourage diversity. Here's our arts correspondent been sent out. E think friends part of an American tradition. My dad used to say what's remembered lives. It was no surprise. Nomad Land took the best film of the bastards. Lots of people expected to do the same at the Oscars. Two weeks from now. It's a powerful investigation of the soul of America, with Frances McDormand, superb in the lead role, and her win as best actress was predictable. There was talk of best actor going to the late Chadwick Boseman instead at 83, Sir Anthony Hopkins took it for the father. "I was like this is a very denzel performance and did bricks his whole did sell to every single performance and he does. I feel like chadwick. Boseman shows that this that. I can also do that but with me. You get so much more in the performances that i bring to the table so i think that this was probably the smallest version of chadwick boseman that we get out of all the performances that we talked about. But i still really enjoyed it and i would love. Seen him do ten more movies. Just like vick interspersed with hip doing another couple dozen movies about being clarence thomas. Next time asia where you on twenty one dollars well so i haven't seen it before this in part because it kind of looked like the standard police detective movie and there's placement time for them. I've enjoyed in watch many of them. I agree with you that wants the movie gets going. It focuses much more on the criminals. He's trying to catch in their journey. And we don't get as much chadwick. But i do think that it is interesting to watch him. Play this normal character because even from the very beginning from the first scene. He's in as like oh. His voice is so different. I'm so used to hearing him. Always have some sort of accent or some sort of affectation to his voice and here to hear him speak anymore. Normal is an end the way in which he's able to even do that incredibly well to really take this very sort of boilerplate. You know police officer like dad was a cop. He died in the line of fire. And now i have to preserve his legacy sort of thing and making it so that all of the moment you can kind of see him making very deliberate choices. The character never gets lost even when the character does get lost like it feels like he understands that characters bache in every scene and so. I do think that you know you should go into it. Knowing this is not going to break any new ground in terms of the way in which these types of stories are told but there are some interviews. He did where he talked about. Wanting to you sort of channel all the great seventy s movies like french connection. You know. it doesn't quite get there. But i see where he is going. I can see him as a popeye. Doyle of this era. And i would've loved to as well seem to more types of movies. Can i just say what big before we get a bunch of angry emails. He is using a new york accent in this movie..

My grandfather has not tell me what this was telling me the truth the thing about the end of that is that's to chali yelling. You know what i mean. That's him really kind of starting to really get stern and lose his temper. And if you've seen him in get on up or you've seen kind of his big monologue in my rainey's black bottom you know that he can modulate that anywhere on a very broad scale and the decision to make challah someone who really keeps his level calm right. I think is partly the fact that he's a new king. I think it's partly the fact that it's just his personality. And i think it's partly the fact that he's kind of an interior guy a lot of ways and i think the more have watched this performance the more. I have come to understand that it does that for the character. It also does important things for the movie because he has to have enough vulnerability that even though he's a king and a superhero that he seems vulnerable to kill monger and i think the fact that chadwick boseman makes him a quiet not super explosive or dynamic type of character makes him seem a little bit uncertain in a way that he isn't actually Your black panther thoughts. Oh yeah i mean this is probably the only marvel superhero movie. I've seen more than once. i've seen it many many times and i totally agree with you on that point. I also think what's so fascinating about this performance in juxtaposition with the others is like you said he really does know how to use his instrument in all these different ways and so even though yes he did have the habit of playing these quote unquote black icons. He recognized that each by was very different. They are all very different in certain ways. And so with james brown a lot of it comes down to physicality within the body and the movement and getting the moves down right and a voice downright. And then here we also see him being obviously. He has physicality as well because he has a lot of big action sequences but so much of it is also just like standing tall and being tall and so it's just a testament to his dedication and his ability not to judge the characters that he's playing into take them very seriously and their desires and their wants very seriously. I think that's part of what makes us performance so great..

It opens with chadwick in old age. Makeup this is like him in his fifties sixties. When he got kind of a radic was clearly having an issue with drugs and with him going to one of the businesses he owns and being really upset. At age 43 Chadwick and extraordinarily popular actor that was from Black Panther. Mr Boseman got colon cancer four years ago, fought valiantly with it produced movies while he was fighting his cancer. And the word came out a couple of weeks ago that Mr Boseman died without a will. His probate estate is less than $1 million, according to court filings. Now he might have had life insurance. He might have had a 41 K or IRAs. They would not be part of the probate of states. We may have left his heirs Mohr than What the Probate says. But according to court filings, he had less than a million dollars and this is why I want to talk about it with you. First of all, do you realize that if you die without a will, your state will go through the probate process, which is public. That's how we're able to know how much money he had on who he gave it to upon his death. You don't have to have your process, be a public process. If you engage in proper state planning, you can keep it private within your family so that your friends, neighbors and family members don't know who got what if you don't want them to know. But more importantly, I'm sure you're asking yourself the question. Wait a minute. How come someone who has cancer? It is fighting with it for years. Why is it they Didn't get a will, Don't they realize that they may soon die? Well, here's the issue. It is extremely common. All the academic studies show us this that people who are suffering from a terminal illness. Do not engage in a state planning, nor do they engage in charitable giving. Why don't they do it when it is so obvious that this is a very urgent issue? It's psychological. It's because if you are fighting a terminal illness, the last thing you want to dio is given to it to be defeated. Or to contemplate your death. And writing a will is the ultimate contemplation of death. Isn't it thinking about giving your money away even to charity? That is also a contemplation of giving up. So this is why Use so often here of people who die after extended illnesses without having any estate planning in place. In other words, if you don't have the estate planning done now, while you're healthy You're not going to get to it. While you're ill and fighting the disease..

But but you know when you go into that, that is sort of. You. Now, that's that's a a mark that people wanna get. And so you say, well, yeah, hope the movie you you go to bed at night you say, well, hold makes a billion dollars that not not it's not really about what the what that number is is it's you know noted that's as a bitch mark of success is so at the.
