"Makes engines engine components drive train technology but they get less than three percent of their sales from electric vehicles even though they make fabulously warner's aiming to change that and change it now. When tuesday the company held an investor day were they laid out an incredibly aggressive plan to grow the electric vehicle business to twenty five percent of sales by twenty twenty five and then an astonishing forty five percent from twenty thirty now. The stock had run twenty percent for the year going into that presentation. So maybe so surprised that. The stock got hit after for many analysts. It seemed too little too late. I'm not sure about that. I think everybody's missing the point. I say who cares about twenty twenty-five bores killing it right now company. Shut the lights out when reported last month and evening after this move sox's selling for eleven times earnings. This is exactly the kind of thing that you work in a rapidly expanding economy. This is the kind of stock once. You don't take it from me to. Let's go to fred lasalle. He's the presidency aboard work. You get a better sense of his company's prospects missiles saw welcome. Add money and eugene for having me bite. So i'm going to say point blank. This is one of the most aggressive. Pivots i have ever seen. How can our audience speed sure that you can turn this company around so quickly. It's a natural extension of what we've been building over the past years. I remember i was in the leadership team of this company app back in two thousand thirteen and we starting putting things in motion to get to where we are now and so. It's a natural extension. We started organically by building products in the battery electric vehicle and we did a few acquisition that led to the acquisition of delphi that we closed last year in october and that gave us really the scale. The product is she electronics. Alex onyx than software. They so important. To now accelerates so it's a natural extension. It's not a sudden change in strategies that converge with the knock readiness june as you know there is a lot of market to customers demanding products and that convergence of our readiness the knock it is. What's really powerful right now. And those pivots. We've done those before we've done those before in prior years. Okay so for one of the things that you and i have in common. Obviously we believe that this electric vehicle phenomena is happening much faster than many people believe particularly in europe. Do you share with me. Share with me. The view that maybe forty five percent of all vehicles might be by twenty thirty. Our assumption is that thirty percent of the vehicle. We'd be that religion vehicle into any thirty. It's already kind of bullish assumption. An assumption is that we'll be at thirty five percent of our revenue gene. You're absolutely right. I also think that this this move towards education we think at one that is really profound. It goes at different speeds and different region. But it's profile both in like vehicle and vehicle. So do you think your best customers will be say volkswagen up or a gm of four or will it be some of these newer companies. Fisker may be a lucid or they boutique at stuff today. You which one is going to be the biggest in twenty thirty one. I can tell you that we working with all of them are productivity research that we understand the battery electric vehicle system there. We have all the products that move electrons from the stationary charges high speed. I will check stationary challenges. Down to moving the wheels of the beagle. There is no products that we don't have therefore we add value for our customers and downstream. The battery i think one of the only one in the world that masters askale the mechanical the motor and the motor control a so-called politics onyx and that puts us in a very very unique leap unique position. I want people understand the commitment youth. Let's take one that is to me. Emblematic of the new borgwarner romeo power. What a great company if you could describe what they're doing people board understand. The transformation is happening now. How is is the world leader in battery packs for commercial vehicle. Are we also have an acquisition pending of axel in germany that he's also doing berry back full commercial vehicle with blue sheep. Customers specially also in the bus sector. We think the bus sector is gonna be electrifying. Really really really rapidly. And so that shows our commitment to both an affiliation and the commercial vehicle segment so one question you obviously have to do some disposals but you have to do acquisitions to get to that number. Are there enough companies out. There who are doing things. Askale all met but board worst doing right now. Yeah we're gonna spend about eight billion dollars between now and twenty twenty-five using the free cash flow that were generating in the company. We sell funding the spirit and also about three billion dollars of our indian capital so five about five hundred guests drills three are indian capital to to put that money it at work to help the pivot towards vacation and yes there are a lot of very interesting companies out there with which are going to give us either the technological edge that we're always looking for this business is all about efficiency moving electrons as efficiently as again and also looking for scale. You know jim you can have the best product. You don't have scale. She will not competitive. It's going to be hard in our industry. Well i think that you are. I think you're gonna pull it off. i really do. it's the least expensive. Ev play so to speak that. I know in the market today. Rather song air your gentle come on. Co borgwarner.

"Know. Why I have these lovely people in the studio. Meanwhile, it we have the the the mayor coming up at seven thirty seven to talk about the way most story you're excited about that. And some other things, but in the front page of the Detroit News, and you've been talking about it too. We have our I won't be our first real showdown in Lansing with the the governor. And the the the road budget there. They cut out the gas tax, and Yup, she says it makes her way to her desk. She's not signing. She's being towing. It right. That's a long way away from that happening, though, vote is well, there's been no there's no other parts of the budget that are in place yet. I mean, she's threatening a veto of something that is quite far away. Oh, all right. I thought maybe this was no parts of the budget or even gone through a committee yet of other parts of the budget, the road budget is one part of the larger budget and the Republicans say they're going to tackle it. But it's going to be after auto insurance reform. That's what they say. They want to handle. All right as long as they actually get something done. I'll be I'll be standing by them. And and all of that. Yeah. How ever your question originally? Yes. This is the first showdown over this issue. All right. The the robots are invading, Detroit Too. And these kids these brilliant kids from around the country in the first robotics competition at Cobo center, beautiful Cobo center, they love Cobo center. I think there were. We've did it last year? We were there broadcasting like fifteen thousand plus kids that were that were there in it, and then thousands of others family members and all following it in. That's that is certainly good news. The other. Information story, of course, is at the it's always a big deal when the vice president of the United States of America comes to town. And that is indeed what is happening today. Vice President Mike Pence and back in Michigan today talking. Well, he's he's going to talk trade Jonathan hosting says talking trade tour Ford Motor Company plant help ramp up the election efforts of President Donald Trump for twenty twenty doing an event, I don't go to the political events fundraisers. Unless it's the only way I can get to somebody to interview them. I don't pay ever because I'm not supporting I mean, I I deal pretty obvious in my support areas. But I don't do that in the we're missing the opportunity to speak with the vice president who's been a fine guest on the program two or three times. But the idea of coming back to the studio at four thirty to do a phone interview with him didn't make sense to me. I mean, we do him on the phone all the time. If we could have worked out a face to face interview. Again, we will do that. But we couldn't in them not able to come back at four thirty because of other things I've got to do. So that's the reason we're not gonna have the vice president today. But we always wish him. Well, think he's a great guy, and is probably the best reason that level headed Democrats don't want to really remove this president from office currently because then Mike Pence would become the president and give him a leg up on the re election in twenty twenty as an incumbent does that make sense, politically speaking? Yes, it does politically speaking. Well, unfortunately, when you're talking about Washington or lancing for that matter, that's all you're talking anymore. It's politically speaking. I you're much more sports oriented than I am. I really have liked Blake Griffin with the pistons. I just think he's a hard working good guy. Do you do use us star? Yeah. He's he is a star grading. He had a great season with the pistons this past year, and you know, what he did at the at basically the good-bye press conference. He went around and shook the hands of every press guy there, which is unusual. That's that's the relationship is not always positive being the players far from it. Yeah. But he he the with his hurt leg all went around and shook hands with all of the press people gathered for their last basic press conference of the season. I like him. I hope they keep them. I don't know. How all that works there. Is he locked in for a while? I think he is. Yeah. He's got a multi year contract. Lots of money. It would take quite a trade to get him out of Detroit. But I hope he stays. Yeah. Me too. All righty. It is six forty-three on this Wednesday morning Victor. Yes. That Victor is it a studio with his lovely daughters. Katie and Julia, and he's got some things to talk with us about we have a few questions, and he has a new product that could save you a tremendous amount of money, and like Prince Charles, I'm all ears to wanna hear about it. "Seven or whenever news breaks hearing, the Paul W Smith show news talk seven sixty WJR. You know, if I were kiss. They can do this in call it their final tour, but I would've just paid other guys to dress up like them and continue the whole, you know, they could have called it kissed lives on or the kiss memories or something. But you know, what they've already arrested that guy singer for the doing the same thing. I guess he wasn't available to help kiss out to fake out the people who go see kiss. Well, I joked. It was a joke that was in search of an ending. Yeah. But I'm not suggesting they lie, although that might have occurred to people, but because you can't tell who's behind all that make you can't. But you can say they could have owned they own kiss. They could have said kiss memories are. I mean, they could've could've been a show on the road with them still dressing up. Maybe they will maybe they will. Well, we think it's the real kiss out there. I hope it is real. I I got a one quick question. Or no, I got a statement. And a question the statement is I don't know if you've heard this dick, or or you our listeners have heard this. That we haven't grounded supposedly that airplane, the seven thirty seven max eight we haven't grounded it. Listen to this because our pilots know how to deal with the issue. Can I ask you a question? Why the heck do you have a brand new plane out with an issue that has to be dealt with? Right. What's I mean, don't brag that you're able to overcome the mistakes the play makes right which leaves US Open to somebody missing at once. And that's one too many times, and it might have happened twice. So I don't know if that's a good reason for keeping the planes in the air, our US, trained pilots know, how to handle the problem, right? They know how to keep the plane from crashing. Yeah. Number two. And meaning no disrespect them. God bless him for coming up with this. But. How are the feds involved in college admissions? And how did this all come about in? I tried to look backwards working through it. Well, there's a fake charity will God knows there's a number of fake charities. And if the feds gonna be investigating them I'd like them to come out with a list of the fake charities. So that we know which ones not to give money to and then I thought, well, maybe it's an Internal Revenue Service. And maybe these these guys were taking the money, the coaches and others reporting and his income. I don't really know the federal investigator. The Justice department says yes, they many of them weren't. So we're not we're not reporting it as no, no, they the the people were were placing the donations to the charity on their tax return writing off fake, right? Okay. So that'd be more charges coming out of this whole thing. Yeah. Unbelievable. I think I think the number. They're using right now is thirty three people. Prominent law lawyers prominent rights actors actresses such your question about one of the one of the federal what's the federal government involvement in in admissions. Well, Paul w there are millions and millions of federal dollars now involved in public universities for all kinds of things including Pell grants, other federal grants. Federally sponsored scholarships and when federal money is involved. It comes with strings, and that's the involvement of local Sam in colleges and universities in America today, Mr. Hefner, and now we know the rest of the store. Thank you for that six forty two. But I realized coming up in just a moment, we'll speak to Jim Roope who was there for the seventy six th annual Golden Globe. So he's coming up in just a few minutes. I would just say this the Steve corral and Carol Burnett segment if you can isolate that online it's well worth watching from start to stop for the special care net award. It was just fabulous. The oddest moment. Probably was Jeff bridges speech for receiving the cease demille award. Confusing to say the least and behind me bohemian rhapsody one. Malik won best actor green book won best movie musical comedy and Mahershala Ali the best actor supporting actor and Glenn Close won best actress in drama for the wife lady Gaga had been favored for her work in a star is born. Anyway, we'll go through the details coming up, but dick. I gotta ask you this. Because. I'm getting confused. The original reaction I had when they picked up the Novi resident American Paul Whalen. Call him a spy in Moscow was merely a tit for tat. And this was the game that goes on because we hit arrested that young lady, and you know, the whole deal. Is there and that was the obvious way to guess what was going on? But now when I hear that as a marine he tried to steal ten thousand dollars in government cash. He was kind of kicked out. I think removed from the military. Yes, he was dishonorably discharged. But then to find out what I understand he was working insecurity at borgwarner. You don't need to become. You don't need to become a citizen of Canada, a citizen of Great Britain and a citizen of Ireland to do any work. You do for an American company like borgwarner, you use your passport and you go freely to those countries. Why would he hold a Canadian British and Irish citizenship? Well, because apparently there's a lot more going on under the surface. There certainly must be right. And I'm I'm a little shocked, and I think maybe his family and friends are a little surprised when more and more of this information comes out, I would suspect they know more than they're saying, you think so. Well, that's one of the tip off of how strange this was was within twenty four hours of this news breaking here last week when the secretary of state Pompeii, oh and a few others issued their statements regarding the, you know, the aftermath their reaction, they're responding statements, and they were less than stellar in their defence of Mr. Whelan. They were kind of lukewarm statements saying basically will look into it. And see if these charges are true. That's not what you would expect the US government to be saying about a citizen taken into custody in Moscow being charged with being a spy. That's not what our government normally would say. And so that was strange, and if you look at that statement now in the context of what a little bit more of what we know about Mr. Waylon. There's probably going to be a lot more. Maybe unusual news that comes out of this. But let's face it. We all hope that he's freed that. He's safe that he's okay. And that will learn the facts eventually about what's going on. But yeah, it is a little strange that he was apparently a citizen of the world. Yeah. It makes the. Diplomatic chess game, a little more interested -solutely, and and for me at least just watching on the sidelines of very unexpected information. And I'm wondering what will be next. We'll have it on WJR. I can tell you that. And we'll have it as we have it. We won't try to paint it or color change it with our opinions. We just trying to give the facts and get to the bottom of the facts on the story of no vice Paul Whalen. Alrighty. Thank you Richard will list and by for the next news coming up at the top of the hour bulletins at once news talk seven sixty WJR.

The FSP says the dual US British citizen received a USB drive containing a roster of personnel at a secret Russian institution. According to various Russian news sources we'll in receive the dungle from a Russian citizen at his hotel with FSB agents bursting in moments later to arrest him, what happened to his alleged Russian confederate isn't known. We Lynn's background is unusual. He's a senior security manager at borgwarner, which is a large company with operations in many countries. But Russia is not among them. He has visited Russia before. And he said to have been active in the Kentucky, ah the Russian social network. He's an ex marine a former staff sergeant who twice deployed to Iraq. But who was also given a bad conduct discharge by a court martial in two thousand eight for what military court records characterized as attempted Larr. Arseny three specifications of dereliction of duty. Making a false official statement wrongfully using another social security number and ten specifications of making an uttering checks without having sufficient funds in his account. The court martial would seem to make him an unlikely candidate for recruitment by US intelligence services. But then it would also seem to make him unlikely candidate for a good security job at borgwarner yet. That's the job. He has. It's an odd case we'll and seems to be at least a bit of a Russophile and his interest in Russian culture, which many people in many places share may have put him in harm's way as an easy target of opportunity for Moscow security organs the circumstances of the arrest. Do indeed sound like something consistent with provocation..

"Russia's has Paul wheel in was detained during quote, an active espionage, Wieland's family says absolutely not he was in Russia for a wedding the US ambassador to Russia visited wheel yesterday for the first time and Meanwhile, Secretary of state Mike Pompeo, so that American diplomats are waiting for more answers from their Russian counterparts. We've been cleared to the Russians are expectation that we will learn more about the Georges come to understand what it is. He's been accused of. And if the detention is not appropriate. We will demand immediate return. All right. We've got Moscow. Reporter Charles means on the line with us to talk about this Charles good to be with you. Hi, what was communicated in that meeting between us ambassador Huntsman and Paul Whalen? Do we know we don't know too much to the State Department released a statement that said that US ambassador, Jon Huntsman had visited. With Mr. wheelin in prison. This is ours era prison with a long history for holding alleged spies and political prisoners in Russia. Mr. huntsmen had expressed support offered the embassies assistance, pretty pretty standard stuff. He'd also spoken by phone with Mr. Whelan's family, but in the interests of privacy, they weren't providing any more details on the charges or circumstances of the arrest, which of course, are of great interest. Right. But there are more details coming to light about Paul Whalen, and in particular, his tenure as a marine, right? What can you tell us about that will right? We know he was a former marine he served two tours in Iraq back in two thousand four two thousand six the Marine Corps, however, released Wayland service record, and that showed he was convicted in two thousand eight of a court martial on charges related to larceny, given a bad conduct discharge but his career from there. He goes on to work for a law enforcement for awhile works to currently for borgwarner this Mission Bay, Michigan based company that deals with propulsion engines where. Mr. Waylon is head of global security. Now borgwarner has offices in Europe in China, but not in Russia that said Mr. Waylon has travelled to Russia frequently since two thousand seven where and as you noted his family says he was in town for wedding. So I mean, what are you hearing from people? There are people are Russians talking about this or officials that you've been able to speak with discussing this in terms of a possible prisoner swap with Maria Buna, the Russian agent who was arrested and charged here in the us well for soil. It's the middle of the kind of New Year's holidays here. So everything shut down. But we have kind of a blockbuster story that appeared in the Russian press today in Ross bolt this is a Russian newspaper on newspaper, that's pretty well sourced with security services. And they have the what they claim are the first details of Willens arrest. They say that Mr. willan was caught receiving a flash drive naming Russian intelligence agents in the Metropole hotel. This is in his hotel room where he was staying for this apparent wedding. And certainly. Skeptics here in Moscow or discussing the circumstance of this. I mean, the idea of a flash drive in two thousand nineteen sounds a bit strange did Mr. willan even know what was on that flash drive. So there are some who suggest here that it was some kind of setup in very made for TV moment. So essentially, wait for this video to be released on state television here in Moscow interesting that Russia's already spinning out this narrative of reporter Charles Maine's in Moscow. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. Thank you. All right last up. We want to give you a quick update on a developing story this morning. Chinese state media says it has successfully completed the first landing on the far side of the moon. That's the part of the moon that never faces earth. Chinese media published photos that it says we're taken by the probe which would be the first images that humans have seen of the moons. Normally hidden farside, you.

The FSP says that Paul Whalen security lead for automotive parts, manufacturer borgwarner will be charged with spying Wieland was in Moscow for the wedding of friend. Details of the case are sparse. And we Lin's family rejects the notion that he was spying observers speculate that the arrest represents retaliation for recent US arrests of Russian nationals on espionage charges, especially the arrest of Maria Boutin a- who last month to guilty plea in a US spying beef. Alleged NSA leaker how Martin succeeded in having incriminating statements he made during a twenty sixteen FBI rate on his house suppressed he wasn't Miranda is d- but physical evidence the bureau special agents collected including large quantities of classified material squirrelled away in Mr Martens, Maryland residents remains admissible the failure to read him. "But I want to take a little break from the phones for just a moment to send our thoughts and our prayers and our hopes out to the family of Paul Whalen, a forty eight year old man, he is director of global security for borgwarner, which is based here in Auburn Hills. He was in Russia to help out with a wedding. He knew his way around Rushide traveled there before and he was showing some folks some giving them a tour some Kremlin, museums when our old friend, Mr Putin and some of his cronies decided that maybe there was something else going on here. And they detained Mr. Whelan. It gets worse. It turns out they say that he. He is involved in spying and espionage that he's an enemy of the state. This is a marine who served multiple tours in Iraq, who's traveled around the world. Who knows his way around? This is a man he's a marine. Okay. Folks. This is a guy who knows what's dangerous. He knows what's safe, and he's not going to get himself involved in anything that might jeopardize him or his friends or guests. And he's now in the custody of the Russians were stretch still trying to find out more about this. If you've heard his brother and our broadcasts he has said that there's no way my brother's a spy, there's no way he would involved in anything like this. And apparently there is a seventy two hour blackout period. After which mister Whalen will be able to speak to American embassy officials in higher lawyer. Hopefully lawyer has got some tricks of this sleeve because I'm not sure the Justice system in Russia works the way the Justice system here does. So we want to send a our hopes out to Paul Whalen, and his family and hope that they will come through this ordeal unscathed and and quickly because this is a frightening situation. And we really have to acknowledge what this family's going through and serves as a poignant reminder that. Those guys over there in Russia. That different than they used to be. Maybe they're not. His buddy buddy as as we as we might like to think they are. But we're going to get back to your calls here on the Frank Beckmann show Joe in Lexington sock. It to me, my friend. Yeah. Hi, hey, I'm calling about. Only about this year with stuff with illegal aliens. Yes. So see these people they come up to the wall and all that and it'll cost less than. For legal monthly for them to live. I got some songs that are blind and they live in Detroit area, and they only get seven hundred ninety dollars a month to live up and yet they've got legals living, you them. We'll get better money and food stamps housing. Much later. Well, that sounds like a that sounds like a concern. I'd like to know what the circumstances are of everybody in that situation. I know and I see my jobs report. I see a lot of people who live on state assistance, and I will tell you folks, if you had to change places with them, you would not want to do it. This is not the lap of luxury. This is not living largest is not MTV cribs. This is not Robin Leach lifestyles of the rich and famous it is barely a living. But joy, I'm concerned that your friends are not getting better benefits and that they're having to live in such such desperate conditions. So hopefully, something will change there. And hopefully, their situation is temporary. And that they're about to get a little better benefits a little bit of quality of life. Joe? Thank you for your call, Gary and Hazel park. What's going on my man? Hey, brother. Good. Good morning. I'm not supposed to say that stuff. Hey, look the guy that brought up there. Logic seawall Germany's attempt to stop the invasion. He's way out of line because we had to throw a million five hundred ships five thousand planes and fifteen countries at that seawall to break it down. So if there if the Mexicans Guatemalans are gonna do that they'll take out a wall also, but we'll stop them because we have the might. And you said a couple of things that are old cliches at such as were nation of immigrants and their here for hardworking men and women because those dynamics have changed everything is different now than it was when those were valid arguments. Well, I I gotta tell you Gary things definitely have changed. But I don't remember the Irish and the Italians being greeted with open arms. I think they were people back in the twenties saying, no Irish need apply. Remember that? I don't think that are a talion brothers and sisters were on anybody's most welcome list. I think the only thing that's changed is the people that were not welcoming are different. But this country hasn't always welcomed immigrants with open arms. But this country was built by immigrants starting all the way back to Christopher Columbus. Remember that Spanish fella who had the problem with his compass who ended up here thought he was in India. Those are all cliches, they're not true. These people are coming over here. And sucking off our system the Irish did not the there was no welfare system when the Irish will come over. Sure they were mistreated. Everybody knows that. But this is different dichotomy. You have to accept the fact that we need to secure our border and stop this invasion, and you've been told thirty times today and still you reject it, Gary that was thirty one times. Thank you master. I will do as I'm told we're gonna take a quick break while I lick message and data rates may apply..
