It took a little while for mellow to get going. "Listen y'all right that in permanent marker because that is going to be sure and true no matter what and i think the more we hold onto those shore things and allow christ to be our sure thing. The last we're going to insist that our five year plan makes sense. And so having said that i do know there are some practical help and tips and things that we want to look at and to do and one thing. That's helped me. I know people love to make lists especially those of us who are planners and so One listen i hate is the procon less because i don't think it accurately i don't think it measures what we hope it measures because a procon was like i have three pros and cons so that means i should not do this thing like like the lord would like at this brings me closer to god. Your continents like it's inconvenient you're right boozer way. The same amount. Yes so you have to consider so it's like it's helpful in an helps you process thoughts and get stuck on paper. But i feel like that's like the most surface thing you could possibly do and also also we often tend to make those pro-kremlin when we are freaking out and we don't know what else to do so we're like the procon okay. Let's figure this out. But what i i think what's better. That's okay that works but what's better is to be a person. For whom at a different kind of list is a part of your daily is a part of your life rhythm so i like to make what i call a life energy list which is asking yourself the question about a particular period of time in a particular area of your life. So let's say we choose this past summer and we think about our. I don't know the work our work our work this past summer. So maybe it's like three months at a time And we take that portion exact portion of time and that topic and we ask ourselves two questions. What was life What was life draining. And what was life giving in that area and then you make a list you can make a list. This is a different kind of list. It's a reflection lasts rather than looking forward in fear we're gonna look back and reflect and find those things in our work that was life draining and things that were life giving in this is a this is a curiosity practice. And it's an it's taking that idea of okay. I do and make. Let's get things down but it's sort of giving yourself permission to see your life for what it actually is. And sometimes i mean you'll know right away. That was that drained me but that gave life. Now this does not mean that you're going to eliminate all the life draining things however moving forward. It could help you make some decisions about the future in your work. You might next summer. Because here's what happens if we don't do. The work of reflection next summer comes around. We're doing things the way we've always done then and it might be worse this time. It might need more overwhelming this time or more life draining. We don't know why because we just moved on to the next season. And so i think that though this might not be most helpful with when you have a pressing decision right here i will say from for me personally. Making a regular practice of making this type of energy life. Energy list has helped me a more grounded maker. Because i'm more aware of the things that i feel like. God has called me to the things that bring life the things that drain life and it helps me moving forward and so that can that is a little bit more of a big picture kind of list that we can make and just a tip. Make the life draining part. I an end with the life giving list. Because i've done it the opposite way. It's super fun and it's like you end on this really blurry note and so just do it in that order and you will your future awful. Thank you but Took and i love that. Like i feel like it just gives us insight to who we are in you know if you are a teacher and you're like okay. What about this last semester was life giving to me and your lesson planning and you're like what was like draining to me and you're like interacting children. You're like wait a minute. Wait a minute. There's something wrong here but there is so much room for someone who is strategic thinking and love making lesson plans like good god. We all need that skill. We all need people who can do that. And if you realize that is the the is true and good out of this for me. That's the way that i'm gifted the thing that's draining is i. Don't love teaching kids will. Maybe it's like okay. Maybe would like teaching high schoolers are college students or maybe teaching your thing. Maybe you were in school administration or some other kind of thing where you get to use that strategic part of your brain but i think that gives us some insight. Well i was just going to say. I think we get stuck in the trap of like. Oh i like curriculum. That means i have to be a teacher. And we think things are so linear. But i but when we allow ourselves as sort of look at these lists and recognize. I have this weird skill. I have this weird passion. Have this strange desire and we can trust. That are good and faithful father mike. We've those things together in a really weird quirky job breath that we could never come up with on our end but if we didn't take the time to pay attention we might never have seen that a man not so my story. I feel like it has to be your. Our jobs are pretty like their sired there. So i guess this is. We just said eighteen like well when i grow up. I'm going to like it's just. We didn't have the language for it. There wasn't the technology for it. You know we know right. I know friends. I wanted to pop in for one quick second. 5 Reformers on the Psalms
"This episode. Let's explore five reformers on the soames will start and end with very familiar reformers and in between who knows. Maybe we'll talk about someone you don't know I is. Martin Luther Luther like all of these reformers loved the psalms. Luther set up habit of reading the psalms through in about three weeks and that was a habit. He kept up all of his adult life early on in his career. As a reformer he published his work on the psalms in fifteen eighteen and again in fifteen nineteen and that set a trajectory for the reformers to publish commentaries on the Psalms. So first pride of place goes to Martin. Luther next up is Lutheran Pastor Yohannes Buchen Haagen in fifteen twenty four. He published a Latin commentary on the Psalms. This was a massive work and set the stage for many of the commentaries. That would follow in fact. It was so influential in its Latin texts. That a publisher convinced. Martin Boozer and now. Here's our third reformer on the psalms convinced Martin Bucer to translate this Latin commentary into the German and he did well before we leave. Bougie Haugen talk about boots. Or however let's hear what Bogin Haagen has to say about just psalm one he says therefore in this psalm you have all of the scope of all of holy scripture. He goes on to say every song is about Christ and ultimately every song has something to say directly to the church. Well that's Bougie Haagen as we already mentioned boots are translated. Buchen Huggins commentary into the German. Fifteen twenty five. There's an old Latin expression translator trader. And that's exactly what Buchen Huggins thought of Martin bucer translation. It was not just a translation he he took many liberties and an essence was publishing his own commentary. Well that led to boots or publishing was in fact his own original commentary in fifteen twenty nine and curiously. He published it in Latin. It was a huge volume but despite its heft it went through five editions in the Latin. It went through two editions in French and it even made it into the English. So influential was bouterse commentary on the Psalms that it actually impacted the French Salter and the English psalter which then went into the English Bible. Curiously enough boots are published it under a false name presenting himself as a French humanist scholar from Leon well harassment's great human scholar. Erasmus discovered. It was actually bucer and the JIG was up. Well that's three out of four next comes. A reformer you might not have heard before we'll famous Musculus. He was a reformer and scholastic tradition. He was a benedictine monk in fifteen eighteen reading luther. He was converted. He then went to Strasbourg. Studied under Martin boots or he was dispatched to Augsburg. He wrote many books. Among his books are eight commentaries on the Old Testament including his commentary on the Psalms Musculus. Well that leads us to our fifth and final reformer that is Calvin. He published his commentary on the Psalms in fifteen fifty seven and among other things. He says in his preface to the psalms. He extols the virtues of the psalms. Here's what Calvin has to say. There is no other book in which there is to be found more express and magnificent commendations both of the unparalleled liberality of God towards his church and of all of God's Works. There is no other book in which there is recorded so many deliverance -is nor one in which the evidences and experiences of the fatherly providence and solicitude which God exercises towards us are celebrated with such splendor of diction and yet with strict adherence to truth short.
