In Nineteen, twenty, four had changed, he had missed the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange in nineteen, twenty, nine, and the Great Depression that ensued. Twelve million Americans were now unemployed and crime was on the rise. Most, importantly, however Americans had lost faith in banks. Their savings had disappeared seemingly overnight in the crash. And those few banks that open were foreclosing on people's homes and businesses. In short banks were being vilified as the enemy, and perhaps justifiably so for dillinger. This new cultural paradigm created an almost unfathomable opportunity. Fame! Anarchists, who raged against the establishment where now Robin Hood Figures Champions of individualism and warriors of economic turmoil. They were the country's most admired celebrities, which was why famous bank robbers like George, Machine Gun Kelly Charles. Pretty Boy Floyd Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were plastered on the front page of newspapers. They were heroes which may dillinger's plans for continuing his life of crime almost too easy. Now, thirty dillinger returned to Mooresville Indiana. He began by robbing supermarkets, stores and small banks with a small number of Pierpont men. He was unmasked, but still went undetected. His face hidden in the shadow of his brimmed had. Newspapers gave him the nickname Jackie rabbit, because he would leave onto countertops before pointing a gun at whoever was in charge in calmly sang. This is a stick up and dillinger loved the attention. But, he had to maintain practicality after each robbery, he set aside funds to purchase weapons, information and assistance. Anything that would help him. Break his friends out of jail. Over the course of just a few months, dillinger turned a profit of nearly fifty thousand dollars worth just shy of one million dollars today enough to start enacting his plans, and in September, nineteen thirty three dillinger's smuggled weapons into the Indiana state prison in boxes, meant for the prison shirt shop. He hid the guns in spools of thread and mark the box with a giant red axe to let his friends know who it was from. Dillinger was known for his subtlety. Now all he had to do.

"It's a total Beatles rip off. And I was like, all right. Good on you, man. For admitting that real recognizes real. He's like, it's a total Beatles. When we came up with this sort of Beatles, rip off and curt Smith was laughing his ass off on stage. It was very, very funny, yet, the bills rip off and it's also a good Beatles rip off if you're going to rip off man, rip off the best. So. I was I thought maybe we were going get head over heels. Yeah. You know, because I thought he was going to I thought that the he was going to go three from going all big chair gone go all big chair, and then also because, you know, it's it is one of the most iconic icon, exceeds dirty in Donnie Darko. Yeah, yeah. That's true. That's just one of my favorite moments in the entire movie is that whole that whole camera move going through high school and seeing the little girls during their little cheerleading. Routine slow-motion. I love that movie too. Welcome back everybody. How you doing? Nick Gilio here on seven twenty WG and hey, get your get your thinking, caps on, because I want to hear about the best gunfighter and gunslingers TV and movie history. We do modern, we can do westerns, whatever I guarantee a Sammy Davis junior. Now. No. But the kid who beat him. And Michael Michael our listener who called yesterday with one of my favorite stories that I've ever heard on this show. As a kid. He actually got into a fast draw contest with Sammy Davis junior real story. And he beat Sammy Davis junior and therefore his parents got the hang out with him for an evening at the shape. Hurry. Incredible story. But anyway, gun fighters and gunslingers in movie, and TV history were getting to. And the reason why is because we've been talking about Bonnie and CLYDE, who can fall under the category of gunslingers and gun fighters, obviously, and a lot of people most people when they think Bonnie and CLYDE, in terms of the, the world of movies, or TV the first thing that pops into their head and it should is Arthur Penn's. Fantastic. Movie from nineteen sixty seven featuring Warren Beatty and Faye. Dunaway, and introducing the world to Gene, Hackman, and Michael j Pollard as well. So, but there have been more, for instance, from nineteen Fifty-eight. There's what be called the Bonnie Parker story, and it's the first feature film adaptation of Bonnie and CLYDE story. The Bonnie Parker story, starred Dorothy provine as Bonnie and Jack HOGAN, as CLYDE, though his character was renamed guy Darrow in the film, as you can probably guess this was a very loose adaptation of the true story. It was directed by William Whitney a guy most famous for co directing crime drama movie serials of the thirties and forties. Pro vines Bonnie worked as a waitress in Texas, true, the real Parker did work as a waitress for several years and guide Darrow was one of her customers likely not true, the real Parker and barrow are thought to have met at the house of a mutual friend after getting fired from her job. She joins guy on a series of armed robberies and the two are chased by a fictional version of Frank Hamer. They Texas ranger named Tom Steele played by Douglas Kennedy. Doug steel. Yeah. No, Tom Steele, Tom steel. That's even better, your first name cool. I could be your wrestling name. The film was by the way, I forgot to follow up question with, with, Dan. That FOX is doing wrestling. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I should have followed up on that. Yeah. We got a new is it WWE? I mean or is it another another group? Anyway, this film that we're talking about the Bonnie Parker story was largely forgotten overshadowed by the groundbreaking. Bob, Lester, that followed a decade later in her nineteen sixty-seven review of Bonnie and CLYDE, New York Film, critic Pauline, kale, who is one of the greatest film, critics that as ever lived, call the nineteen fifty eight film cheap in every sense of the word. It's not easy to find. You'll either have to buy the Spanish DVD of an Amazon or wait for it to air on them. But interestingly celebrated, filmmaker Quentin, Tarantino is a big fan of it two thousand a New York Times article he said, I was blown away. It was like, whoa. Who made this? I have to see everything he ever did. So it's got the seal of approval from Quentin Tarantino is nineteen fifty eight film, the Bonnie Parker story. Well, a better brush, up on my Spanish. There you go. All right. And then, of course, we have the nineteen sixty seven version of Bonnie, and CLYDE, the from director Arthur, Penn this fast paced gun, slinging gangster, film was considered nothing short of revolutionary Dunaway's Bonnie was sexy wild and free while Beatty. Clyde was boyish charismatic and suave and introduced American audiences to a new kind of glamorize romanticized violence. They had never seen before some audience and critics found the blood splattering to be in poor taste by those were fascinated many credit the film as the origin of pulp Noir genre, like sin city, million dollar baby. And of course, Pulp Fiction it played favorably in award season with a cell Parsons, taking persons won for best supporting actress I totally forgot about that. Burnett, goofy taking home best cinematography Beatty. And, and Dunaway were both nominated but they didn't win the fun. The film, undoubtedly gloss over some facts. Texas ranger Frank hammer came off, particularly poorly in the film, the couple of captures him, humiliates him and then sets him free, which never happened. In fact, Hamer's widow was so upset she sued to production. For defamation and was awarded settlement several years later, there's no denying the film's lasting impact, though, which all but security, except into narrative of Bonnie and CLYDE, and indeed, the narrative cinematic extra for many, many, many years to come. And I believe you can see Bonnie and CLYDE on Netflix. Check. Yeah. I believe you can see it on Netflix. Well it was there for a while. That's how I watched it again recently, I really should own it. But yeah. Yeah, you should own it. It's just I it's weird to think that one movie can be seen as a turning point for an entire industry. And what what you can you can do that for other films as well. That changed the course of movies. I mean Star Wars is another one jaws is another one. But, like even those you can trace back to Bonnie and CLYDE, and how they weren't making that move jaws though. The, the impact that jaws made was it changed the way movies were released not necessarily made jaws was the first ever summer blockbuster. And then that after that movie summer was the time when you would release, you know, your, your big movies, and they were the first that was really the first movie to be released in literally thousands of thieves at the same time, right? Well, not sounds, the thousands thousands didn't have until later on, like five hundred theaters was massive in one thousand nine hundred yeah they're like, how could you do? Yeah. And then by the time Star Wars came out everything to change. It was it was it the door was the door was Jimmy d- by jaws and star. Wars kicked the door open for that kind of thing. So. How about this, Bonnie? And CLYDE, the true story from nineteen Ninety-two. It's a made for TV movie from director, Gary Hoffmann, it never got much attention. So little in fact that you can still watch the entire thing on YouTube. So if you're looking to watch it, you just go to YouTube and watch it stars Tracey Needham, who you might know as Meg from Jag as a much sweeter, Bonnie and Dana bash Brooke, oh, deputy Briggs from twin. As much publicity in nineteen Ninety-two. So this was like, right after twin peaks. Yeah. It was it was like literally his follow up to twin peaks. Nice. As a much more sincere CLYDE. It's not nearly as gruesome as the nineteen sixty seven film, given that it was made for TV. It's possibly only a watch for the true bunny, and CLYDE, Kuna sewers. But if you're craving, more content it is there. And then then there's this one oh, you know what I'm going to save this. I'm going to save this one, because we need to talk about this one, a little bit longer than than than we're gonna break here for the weather. But yeah, so I got a couple more Bonnie and CLYDE movie of MTV things to talk about here. And they were true, Glenn gunslingers, and we are going to talk about gunslingers and gunfighter is the best TV and movie history, modern westerns any of that stuff gunslinging characters who were the best. So the, the best gun fighters and gunslingers TV in movie history. That's coming up if you want to jump in with any of this. It's three one two nine eight one seven two hundred for talk and text.

In Dallas, Ray, Lynn can't blame. Her grandmother. For refusing to have Bonnie buried next to CLYDE that. It's been eighty four years and she'd like to see her aunt's casket relocated to the spot alongside CLYDE barrows grave. Have you ever seen the pictures of the the carnage? Like there was no let's like the back in those days the wheel and craziness. There was no let's just try to take him into custody. And we we talked about cops nowadays. It was like all right. Here's what's going to happen. When we see them, you take out everything you have and you just start blasting. And that's what they did. And they just started blasting and blast any it was violent. It was just a just a massive. I've been to. When you're on your way to Vegas from California. And they've got I don't know what one of the hotels. They have like like mobsters cars like Bonnie, and CLYDE you go see those things. And it's I go in there because I'm just a curious little weirdo at times that I just thought. Oh, jeez. That is that's awful way to go. Right. But they went down fighting. "This so i can see where people want to make this into a feminist film because this is a female protagonists but yes she's not necessarily a strong female protagonists is just more of a a slice of life kind of story and also showing what people were going through at this particular time anyways nando to bonnie and clyde because the thing that struck me the most is the lack of suspense he know for a film with bank robberies in it i really like i wasn't on the edge of my seat you know it was going to end badly yeah no matter how it ended know there was no dramatic music nope that the cuts weren't that stylistic it was like watching a bank robbery happened in real life in being like oh is that it barbara load in hated bonnie and clyde again another hollywood movie it's like oh people like faye dunaway and warren beatty would be too beautiful to end up in that sort of life and i can't say i disagree i mean the real life bonnie clyde were not looking we're not beautiful they were not particularly charismatic i mean yes the real bonnie parker did write poems but they were just you know two bit robbers who've got a little bit of notoriety along with a bunch of other robbers at the time we will bonding inclined mostly robbed convenience stores they weren't necessarily the hero to the people that portrayed as in the arthur penn film where they're taking down you know the the banks the big mucky mucks.
