Do you remember like. I know that when i became aharon addict right i became a stone. I and i was this ridiculous donor. And i i basically smoked pot every day for like five years and then i tried a little bit of heroin. I tried some pills and it kind of got integrated into my lifestyle. How did it go from drinking or occasionally using to becoming a self professed prefer professed crackhead or even just to be a cocaine acton general like how did how did it get to you. I would think and this is probably. I'm living in a fool's paradise which also didn't sample the showing That everything really went to hell. It started going hell with alcohol. Pot never did me. Any harm accepted during the eighties. Trying to find out money for it I would say the only time i went. Oh my god i'm addicted. I can't function. what am i gonna do. That would be crack. Crack turned my whole world upside down. Do you remember the first time you smoked. Yeah i do actually. I was at my friend. Dave's house in canoga park and we had We're on the way over to kind of do an intervention. Although this was a long time before the show intervention. And i went over there. And i said dave you have to come out of the house. You've been in your two weeks. You're not eating. You have to come outside. And he said and he should burn for this but he stayed in my best friend. Each really. Take one hit of this and then i'll go outside with. Oh man. can we sell my car to get more of this. I mean literally that fast and it just stayed with me for for several years and you know they. They talked about how cheap the high was. I did not see that. I saw it I when they repossess my house any money. I'd had it in an account to to pay rent or the mortgage and things like that went right to crack. Crack was the bad one for me. Heroin the bad one for you. Oh yeah heroin. Was everything for me heroin. I just didn't do anything. I didn't have any kind of life work. Anything for i don't know like almost fourteen years and It took having children for me to figure out how to stop which is not anyway. I would wreck. I don't recommend anyone to have children to stop doing drugs. But that's kind of how it worked for me. Thank god something dead but Yeah heroin was everything to me. Until i realized that that's all it was and i was never gonna get anything else and i just realized i couldn't afford it. You know what i mean like. I also didn't have any. I knew nothing was coming for me. I think that's a difference between a celebrity and just an ordinary drug addict. Like you could turn anything into a money making opportunity right. Yep that's in twenty that you say that In one of my arrests that were really public. And i But it was. You know they'd say Bonnici he can palm pilot shit and he'll come up with money in his teeth. And i felt i didn't feel it so much of the time but i look back now. All the you know you get in a fight with a transvestite and a high-speed trace you gotta chase you get arrested for crack and get fired for being drunk like all. Those things have happened. I'm still very gainfully employed totally. Well you've managed to work through and you've managed to use some of it for your career like when you punch the transvestite person like were you. Fighting then was that your thing then or did that kind of lend itself it into being your thing like when did you. I was i was marshall That's kind of fun little story. I was set up on about twelve years old. And i'm showed up to photo shoot with chuck norris. The reason being chuck door noticed suggested in return dragging or whatever. It is to be bruce lee's next movie he's in it and he has a big scene in any fights bruce lee and there's some really intense moments about when it was over and bruce was such a big star. Everybody went well. Let's make chuck norris a big star which happened. It just didn't happen for another fifteen twenty years. And they said i. Let's get some pictures and we'll make my heartthrob. Four or five five guys and they were wearing headgear and had sixteen ounce or eighteen gloves. Danny bonnici i just. Don't it's just creatively stifling to me. And i know you guys have your feelings about it and i have my feelings about it. And i didn't turn the radio on and i didn't do anything just got up and i start made some eggs and went to the garage. You didn't check your email. You didn't answer the phone the door. No i didn't do any of it. In part of also part of my weird wiring is i would be uncomfortable checking the radio turning the most uncomfortable thing in the world would have been getting up at nine thirty when i did turning on the radio and listening to you guys talk about where i may have been where i was where i was or what was going on in my world. It's tree falling in the forest. If if i don't hear it it doesn't exist so i don't turn it on. I didn't turn it on. I didn't do anything. I just pretended like i didn't work there anymore. And that was that. And i immediately just wash it off or my brain and i was onto working on my car and i think at some point. Jimmy came to my house. I was getting to the show sounded day. He came to my house. Any rang my buzzer. And he's like i remember he said hey. Would you pick up your phone. And i was like yeah. I'm not really picking up my phone and he's like where pick up your fucking phone because they keep calling me. That was. That was what i recall. But also the second they rehired a re-sign bonnici to you know multiple years or whatever. It is the second day did that. I just went okay. now i'm done i made. I made it super clear to him. What i wanted and now i'm just moving on to whatever i'm moving onto or nothing. I don't know but they made the decision. I'm moving on and i didn't. I don't wrestle with it. But i did one of my one of my best conversations with james baby celtics and my agent were of course he was just a baby. This love it. Just ignore him. Just go to go to work. Let him sit there. Let him talk. Let him just ignore him in the next cubicle over just go to work and just ignore them. Yeah and radio revolt talking for four hours. He didn't do that math. And sometimes you open the closet door and there'd be no macabre but other times it'd be a huge parent flagging its wings. Crying sometimes you fling. Open the shower door and there'd be nothing behind the curtain and it's in there but just ignore it. Move on skit about your life. Don't worry get up in the morning. "It. They made that fast start. Italy couldn't get into the game. A phillips and rice were small ordering in the midfield was none of the rotations. None of italy's ability to get on the ball and and create a passages of play like in senior couldn't do it they were there. Was this just this. This game is going to be remembered as a game where england scored and then decided okay. We're done we're gonna offend for our lives and that is not entirely true. Mum so the first half i actually thought that england were excellent in that. They scored that goal. Like you said for the next ten to fifteen minutes. They continue to go for it. They almost had the same goal again. It was the same. They had a similar play of cain to trippy. Who played in a ball. That was just beyond the reach of sterling. Might have been eleven minutes. Can again in that inside left position. Switches it again in those across come in and it was almost starting got on the end of it right that same thing even went sorry tokuda crushing under one hundred on twenty four minutes. "A group of three researchers have won the Nobel prize is in economics for their scientific approach to solving global poverty esther do flow Albacete Bonnici and Micheal creamer are known as the random does for the work with randomized control trials it's a research technique that's previously only been used in the hard sciences Micheal Creamer from Harvard University joins us now on a skype line Michael congratulations thank you so much and this doesn't happen very often how are you feeling today it was completely surprised for Let's take the time out to talk about your work comes thirty years after you first started doing these randomized control trials in enya other was an early one with textbooks can you tell us about that Schorr I spent spent a year teaching secondary school in Kenya and this was a time when you're Kenya's progressed economic class since then but it was it was very poor them most kids did not have text books in school and one of the findings this was somewhat surprising was that when we compare it schools that receive the text books to those that didn't there was not much impact on on top scores for the majority of students the students who were initially scoring on yeah well and that's counterintuitive and that's counterintuitive because you would think that if you got more access to textbooks it would help why didn't it so I thought to my my time as a teacher in Kenya and I remembered that kids are missing a lot of school now there's malaria there's worms teachers uh-huh missing school schools taught most kids are learning in their third language they have their own language at home than their Swahili English taught in English so it's very easy for kids to fall behind the curriculum one of the findings since then they're just amazing results if you provide summary middle education so that's something that's been found in in India for example as well so in this example the randomized control was there was a group of kids who did not get textbooks and a group of kids who did get the new textbooks but as you know you you do have critics of this type of works people who say that it's not ethical to give one group something that could potentially help them or even be lifesaving and not the other group so how do you answer that question and is there an example in in your own work where you decided you needed to to stop and give the benefit to both groups you're so you're in in in typically what's happening is the working with for example nonprofit organization and they're they can't reduce the program everywhere so they face it into certain schools after one year and then after the second year they go on to another set of schools then say after the first year it's possible compare what happened in the schools where the program was introduced to the schools were at that program how yet the introduced so in that type of example all the schools eventually are getting the program of course in some cases for example the case of textbooks on it turns out that things that you thought would would work don't work on and in that case it's important that information so that new approaches can be tried if you had all the money and all of the resources in the world at your fingertips and also the a political clout to do it what would end global poverty is that even possible one of the really exciting aspects of this has been and finding a whole host of things across a range of sectors that really make a difference so for example in healthcare making simple preventive healthcare measures like mosquito nets or or de worming medicine or water treatment solution available to poor households making that available free there had been a movement to say we should charge for those things making that available for free makes a tremendous difference to access another approach is just cash transfers so Mexico and many other countries have have tried on cash transfers for for for poor households if they have their kids in school and get basic healthcare at one of the things that examined the Myron research was effective trittin children for intestinal worms uh-huh and we see that they go to school more they are more as adults on this isn't investment that's paid paid back many times over that's Micheal creamer one of three economists who just won the Nobel Prize for their work on taking a scientific approach to alleviating global poverty.
