"Was the exception. There drive was a turnover on downs. four drivers upon and then Under v drive of the game they finally got a touchdown and then Pretty much going into the half. They punted the ball way. So great resiliency from the florida gators here being able to You know essentially turn o'clock around from went the low days were there and really get into the game and almost come away with the victory there. if for the four gotta two-point conversion i would've been huge but Give alabama's credited. Nick sabin his credits And with that It's gonna be interesting to see. How far the alabama crimson tide will go. Because seems like now that they were so closely in the florida. That's his college. Football championship is really. I don't wanna say up for grabs. Because i still think alabama should be favored to win it but at the same time i feel like now Seeing that people are looking alabama saying now these guys are beatable is not going to be easy but they are beatable but at the end of the day is going to be exciting to see what comes next for alabama so looking at the rest of their schedule. next game is gonna be against Southern miss golden eagles. "Gentleman. I have picked the brain of many times. Jay romano pro. Better here in las vegas good to be with you. Thanks for having me all right well. We finally broke the seal. Got you on the pod. And i think it's a perfect situation. Do college win. Totals because the board has been hit pretty hard. But there's still a lot of opportunities out there and we're we're obviously. The calendars turned to mid august. We are ready to go Football season's right around the corner. So i know there's a lot of plays you like a little bit off the grid but i want to start the marquee ones and it's the one that's my favorite of a mall and i've talked about it a few times on daily wager. I believe i've even mentioned it here on the podcast but i am very very big on auburn under seven now the juices move some shops or six and a half. If you want to go six plus money that's fine. It's just so tough when you get the push at seven so i prefer the seven with the juice and it all comes down to the schedule. Not the only reason but the schedules really really difficult. And you've got bama. You got an got georgia. I don't think there's any chance auburn win those games. I know rivalry game and war eagle and all that stuff with the with the iron bowl but it's just auburn is rebuilding. And they have a new coach bryan. Hartson coming in from boise. State and bonex is just not materialize into the quarterback that everyone thought he would be. Maybe a new oc. Mike bobo will unlock. I'll just kind of have to see it to believe it. So in addition to obama. Georgia am there at lsu. They have all miss at home. You know at arkansas. And then there's there's this tough spots here and it's a team that's going to be lacking on offense defense. They're calling card. So i think i don't see how they go eight and four to lose this play. Well i i would definitely recommend Playing the seven laying the juice in this situation. I almost always gonna lay the juice versus taking maybe plus one ten plus one twenty on the under. It's definitely worth the extra half a game. I'm actually high on auburn this year. However i completely agree with you. The schedule is brutal. There's just no breeders for them. I think bonex. Could you know have an improvement. This year they can play well. It's just there's just not enough wings on the schedule. It really looks like they're ceiling is seven. It's just you know when you like. You said when you go to texas. Am have to play alabama lsu home against georgia. And then at penn state week three. It's just you forgot about the penn state game. I'm glad you mentioned that. Cause at the white out game in happy valley. yeah. And i'm looking headlines there between four and a half and seven and a half point underdogs So they can exceed expectations and still not go over this win total. Yeah no. it's a lot to ask. It's certainly a lot to ask but you're so you're high on wsb. Maybe as a dog and a lot of spots throughout the season. So i know you have some places. Well but notre dame under nine talk about not soft spots on the schedule that that's certainly stands out where you'll get the irish yet. The with them again is scheduled schedule. Schedule you know. I know there are top ten ranked team coming into the season but it is just absolutely unforgiving. Weakened weak outs starting at florida state where they opened about ten and a half eleven point favorites. It's down to seven and a half eight. That's not gonna be an easy task. Going into dough campbell on a standalone game in a national televised audience. Week one with a new quarterback Jet cohn was name started earlier this week. With up and down. Wisconsin played well and times. But we'll we'll have to see how he jumped there Notre dame is starting four new offensive lineman. They returned to starters on offense. It's it's a little early in the season For that type of test. So not only would. I looked afford a states Plus the points week one just a little bonus pick right there but the under nine for the season feels like a pretty safe option

"I'm kinda like in the same make i feel like bony tvs approve himself as a starter and i'm not jay bilas got what four years of eligibility left correct when it comes to auburn show. Yeah yeah so. What i'm thinking is if finley fit into that mike vogel often one of goateed finley. Yeah i think what we have to do. Now is just quick talking about the bloodlines of abo- knicks. That's stories over their stories over with and you know his father as great as he was and still is. I happen to have tremendous respect for him. Covered him when he does at auburn. And i know him. And but that's not that's not going gonna matter anymore. That may have been a factor in what gus malzahn did. Because gus malzahn wasn't only coaching a football team. He was trying to win a political race with all the big bubba boosters who are trying to tell him what to do yeah i think it's a new age for auburn. I'm ready to get the feeling that is the best part is it's a clean slate and bonex gets the job now. I mean just just think about who walked out of there. Monique willa who. Who's now considered one of the best quarterbacks in the country playing for someone else i forgot. We're absolutely right about joey. Gay with the amount of talent. That's the The great gus malzahn walk out of there for whatever. Reason is pretty pretty stark anyway. I was pretty amazing We are up against the break. Here let me again. Give folks the traffic. We are sending many of you to the baseball game. We are moving over to the alternate channel until the baseball game ends. The florida game will continue here in just a moment and we will talk.

"Check out our social media as we will promote prome athletics and also share their link to get that code within the next couple of days but definitely check them out. It is the premier analytic site when it comes to gambling and spreads all right. Well I think there is. There's two big games this weekend. And there's a third and it's only even a decent game because Clemson's only chance to lose before the playoffs offs. But let's I might the game I'm most excited for is Baylor. OKLAHOMA OKLAHOMA GOES INTO BAYLOR GOES TO WACO and I'm really excited to to see how real Baylor in didn't you call this the upset before the season. Yeah I said it all year mainly about Texas but I do think Baylor will beat Texas. I'm worried about Oklahoma. It makes it makes more sense. Yeah but here's what. Here's what the menace analytic. Say Baylor has a major major advantage when they're on offense and regular down in distance scenarios. I'm talking about forty spot ranking difference Just their run pass efficiency and rushing average. I mean because Oklahoma has been so poor on defense in first and second down and that is the stat of the day and the the concerning thing for Oklahoma is when you flip sides Oklahoma. Obviously they have a power of an explosive offense with Jalen. Hurts the whole the whole gamut that they have in Norman but they only have six spot advantage over Baylor on first and second down normal situation offense defense So it is Farley. Farley farley favored in Baylor's favor yeah but when I look at it I I do see that. Oklahoma has a decent advantage in critical downs as though critical downs with their on offense and I think that's because Jalen hurts. His has done such a good job on not only not only throwing the ball somewhat efficiently but also oh scrambling for a first down so that that's going to be the key situation to watch. The situation to watch is going to be Baylor on defense on third down against jalen hurts. What if if they can somehow managed to be successful on third down defense and Baylor? They're going to win the game and what this is. This is the top two graded the overall teams in the big twelve on pro football focus. Oklahoma's one Baylor's too as far as complete grades. It's my favorite part is. It's the best graded offense offense in Oklahoma versus the best great defense in Baylor so for the first time all year. Oklahoma might actually have a test on defense. And so we know they're there. The Oklahoma's defense is suspect. It'll be a matter of. Can their offense perform the way they have against a better quality defense essentially. What you're you're talking about his strength on strength right is trailers fences their strength? Oklahoma's offense is their strength strength on strength and then it is. I wouldn't call Baylor's defense a weakness at all. I mean that's definitely their strength but it's going to be more when Baylor's offense how mismatched is that. Yep and it's the to the top two quarterbacks in the big twelve as far as QB rating jalen hurts and Charlie brewer. It's going to be a big matchup. I'll tell you this my greatest this concern for Baylor and you all know what I'm going to get out of here is tackling Dako. in-stat averaging double digit tackles on the year. They're averaging over eleven missed tackles a game in Oklahoma has forty les MIS tackles on the year we know and they average over double digits. That doesn't make any sense. I know I yeah. It doesn't make sense in in games like this. I mean they've only had one ranked opponent and Oklahoma state. They won by eighteen. Yeah so this'll be their first true test. But but tackling tackling. I'm telling you is an indication of everything I think. Oklahoma is going to win this game. And I I still think Baylor goes on to beat Texas. I think they have rematch in the big twelve championship game. But I think Oklahoma wins this game. I I could see this. Being one of those games is whoever has the ball last game. Yeah it could be but it's GONNA be. Ah I'll tell you it's it's one of the hardest games to handicap and pick that that really I've I've looked into all year mainly because Baylor hasn't played anyone great. I still love what they do. I Love Matt Rule. I love the program program. I love what they have going. This is obviously their biggest test. And I think it's more of a test. Even of Oklahoma Wins to say all right. How's your offense going to do against a better defense because if they're gonNA make any type of statement or any type of run at any potential chance at a playoff? It's got to be in this game so I like I like Oklahoma to win. I do even though it's at Baylor but It's it's it's probably my least favorite pick. I've had to date these. Look what Lewis Matt Rule Did did with the Baylor team. I mean it was what not too long ago that they had like a few wins because of all the whatever they are sanctions and all that but I mean nine zero for for Baylor right now. This is the death penalty. It's not GonNa diminish what Matt Rolls Done. It bailed out like I forget it. I think he'll be Penn state within the next two years the way but But as as it pertains game I think Baylor's got their hands full. I like Oklahoma to win but I will be rooting for Baylor. I want to win Guy Matt Rule. He's going to get done here. We go let's go. Let's go bears. I hope not say before we get to the last game And we're only going to talk about this for a brief moment because it's really the only Clemson game. There's a chance to that. They that they might have a game on. We'll restart clemson covers. Okay that's my prediction. Well I would say this Clemson's playing the best football. They played all year the last three weeks. They've shown me more than than and they've shown in the previous however many weeks and I think Clemson's had a solid defense one of the top five defense in the country all year and the problem for the rest of the country in a specifically the rest of the miserable. ACC is Trevor Lawrence and that offense are hitting stride and figuring it out. It's it's I mean it's a thirty thirty position difference in every analytic that we have on our menace analytics and I. I don't think it's going to be close but I'm mostly excited lighted to see how they handle third down because wake forest doesn't do a lot of things excellent but their top twenty five third down defense and I think that is going A. B. The test if Clemson can walk out of their per performing well on third down passing scenarios. You're going to say all right. CLEMSON is for real. Let's let them finish out this miserable miserable schedule and then let's see what happens in the playoffs in his favor. They're only twenty nine spots worse in critical downs on defense. So you know that's in something but something the game that I'm really excited about Auburn at Georgia I this is. This is the game that is going to tell a lot. Because I love of Auburn's defense and I love Georgia's defense. I think Georgia is the best defense in the SEC. And if you look at all the analytics Auburn has the edge in everything except except for critical down distance when Auburn is on defense. I mean it is legitimately going to come down to can Georgia. A four outperform. Auburn on defense is a defensive battle. I think Jake Fromm is a little better than Bonex. I think that I think that skill skill is very similar. I think George better running back. Georgia has one receiver that might be slightly better. Lawrence Caja is slightly better than the skill in the perimeter Auburn but those two defenses are salty. Yeah it's definitely going to be a defensive game. I think it'll just come down to that. It's at Auburn. You know it is at all which is a huge huge factor but I the number two scoring defense in the country is coming from Athens. Georgia and Auburn. Offense is is is leaves a lot to vote Knicks. Getting better but I I'm with you. Here's here's the bottom line when I look at this game. It's Jake from okay. He is an experienced quarterback quarterback. He's played in big games. He's won big games. Bonex is a freshman and is going against a huge defense in Georgia. That's the difference for me. Yeah I agree. I think Georgia wins the game on the road. And I think that's when this whole thing gets becomes a mess because they're going to treat it like a big time win even though it is just a normal win and that's when Georgia's starts to cement themselves as a top four team and I do think Georgia wins. I think they all the analytics point that way and from what I've seen on film their defense is that good and they're like you said their quarterback and offices skill are slightly better than Auburn. So I I don't think this is a questionable game. I don't think it's like the Oklahoma Baylor game where I I had to pick one but I don't know which way to lean but so I'm taking Georgia in this game. I think they'll win the game. I think they will prove that they are at at least. He's worthy of the conversation. I think it's premature to put them in a top four because of the how bad their loss was but the good thing is. I don't think it's going to matter. Because when they get to the game they get the second loss. Then we're they're going to be out of the conversation but I do think Georgia wins this game and I think Auburn continues to be what I said. They were preseason loss. Austin four loss team. I actually think Auburn will win this game. And here's why because they play Alabama at the end of the year and they're gonNa want Alabama in that top four day the refs. SPN conspiracy theory over here so you think the rest are going to will a win for Auburn. Yup I do you know. Well there's there's your take but anyways we want to get to this interview with Simone Eli because I I was really excited. What about this interview because it is? It's a chance to get a different perspective for us up here in the Midwest for us. Big Ten guys are people that viewing Alabama from a distance. And she. She was the sports anchor for a Birmingham news stations. Let's get to Simone Allies interview right now. We are back in studio menace to society with Simone Eli from CBS. Forty two in Birmingham the sports anchor. An insider of of Alabama football going to give us some perspective into I. Guess the mentality down South is specifically in the Nick Sabin Alabama camp. So thanks for joining US Simone. Absolutely I'm excited. And what a week to to be able to talk to you. And maybe more importantly an Ohio surplant in Alabama and former Falcon Bowling Green Basketball player yet. Klay very much people said it all the time you played division one basketball. And I'm like well I mean I was on the bench. They paid for my school. So technically technically yes. It had play at Bowling Green. But I didn't see the floor very I can I can definitely relate I tell people ask me all the time did you play for urban. Meyer Bowling Green. I'm like well I wouldn't say play. I mean I was. I was a preferred walk on. I had a helmet on when he was coaching. But to say I played for Urban. Meyer would be a little bit of a farce but Here's what I really WANNA know. Some what is the feeling right now in Alabama in the Nick Sabin camp within really. SEC country after this weekend in an after the turn of events in the result from the Lsu Alabama game tell me about the feeling in Alabama. I would say the feeling is definitely a very disappointed. Feeling right now because a lot of questions remain on what the future is going to be for Alabama and a lot of uncertainty when it comes to being in the College Football playoff in quite frankly. Frankly it's College Football playoff or bus down here..

"Time quarterback vince young texas. Oh big time quarterbacks when you the game when it's a big one. They win it for you. Just in herbert lost it for you. It all started for me in the second quarter six minutes on the clock. They're going to make it twenty one to three with crazy momentum and he just dropped the ball like you don't do how how do you do that. It was unbelievable and i mean you look at his numbers. He what did he have a forty three q._b._r. Yep forty three. I mean threw for one touchdown. This is the number one quarterback in the country and as far as the n._f._l. What auburn was really working hard on the defense to stop the run so you think justin herbert would be the one to step up and take over a game and win it if he's that kind of player the number one n._f._l. Prospect the number that the number one n._f._l. Prospect in the country right supposed to be the number. One quarterback taken have forty three point four q._b._r. Of first time starting freshman quarterback on the other side had a forty four point eight q._b._r. He had a better q._b. Rating than the number one quarterback in the draft. I think bonex went up against a little bit less of a defense. I'd say okay that's auburn. Soren has a pretty good defense and just put it. All auburn has defense. I'll tell you to most impressive players on the field for me was k. J. brit the middle linebacker for auburn. Burn was ridiculous. I mean he graded out the highest in the game eighty six percent and jeremiah denton my gosh. Did you see his stats. He had he'd strong safety. He had thirteen tackles eight solo. One sack two tackles for loss. He was unstoppable. Yeah he was flying all over the place and i mean those two were the whole defense they the other guys that played well. Obviously i mean they would. They have in total three sacks. I think a six sls their defense. I agree. I agree with what you're saying thing but he got outperformed. I don't want to outperform because bonex actually didn't play that well. He on a whole immigrated out the lowest. He's the twenty sixth grade lowest grade on the auburn offense the lowest grade guy i mean he graded out. I want to forty five or something like that but that'd be a sad as a true freshman. Of course he's not gonna play the whole game and i think the biggest differences bo knicks went down and won the game absolute made the play to win the game absolutely so i i wasn't wasn't herbert hype you can go back and listen to the preseason quarterback ranking episodes and i i was not i was not on board but i thought oregon would pull this out and to honest with you they should've they should've but you can't take anything away from auburn. They went one the game they now. They played the whole game. They should have just picked a enough and mario mario now. Mario cristobal afforded them the opportunity to go win the game. They shouldn't have the opportunity <hes> they shouldn't have the time to do. It should had to rely on a fluke hail. Mary pareo shot and they didn't they're in position to kick a field goal and tie it up and then they take a shot kid mesa back shoulder throw and really what happened. The receiver made a play in the corner didn't play the ball will will not like it was some dynamic throw he was just he threw it up and said go get it mango in the game. He placed it where it needed to be. Absolutely now. I will say for organ no troy. Di was all over the field. Fifteen total tackles almost triple anyone else. He is a great player and had a great game. He was phenomenal a nominal from the middle linebacker spot. That's what you need organ. I don't think oregon is out of this conversation yet. I think that that was an a game against a good opponent that they happen to just not get it done. At the end i think justin herbert needs to play better for them to be a nationally relevant team and they're gonna have to now run through the pac twelve. Yeah i mean they have to win out. With of course they have to win and obviously obviously..

"And you know it's almost inconceivable when you. Look at the Alabama unit and compare them with others. How good a great, I should say is this wide receiver union as good as any in the country as good as I can really remember recent memory. I mean Jerry duty when the Belinda cough and you could talk about is he the most explosive guy or is it any rugs or Jalen Waddell, they all do different things? And you know remember last season devante Smith was injured for most of it but he's still a guys who caught the game winning national championship winning touchdown. As as a freshman, he's very skilled receiver. And when you go forth, deep like that it's really something. And like I said with the I think what's going to be a little bit of shift in what they do. Not having the same experiences pass catcher tied in, I think we're gonna see this group of receivers make even more plays with a quarterback into its Isla who you know, when you look at the schedule for Alabama, it looks like they're going to be able to have their way. I'm very interested to see how many yards. They picked up through the air because there's plenty of receivers who are or capable of making a play. And now someone brought up Najah Harris yesterday and really for the first time in a while. He he's got the he's got the ball to himself. At least went out Emma runs the ball versus the last couple of years, when Jacobs and certainly Damian Harris and others prior were more featured in prominent, but, but he came in a couple years ago, it was one of the top running backs album has signed a long time. Tremendously talented running back that part is never been to question with them. It's more been can't he do all of the little things you ask running back to do in Alabama's offense, which means catching the ball out of the backfield and helping protect the quarterback when you're called on do so. And frankly, this isn't a knock on nagae nece there when you have a guy like Damian Harris and Josh Jacobs ahead of you those guys do those things a little bit better railed play. And maybe overshadow him. A little bit, even though he did have his foam. It's he's a guy who has a very high ceiling thing could do a lot of really special things in this offense, especially if he gets those little things down. He has a little bit. He has a little bit of everything is who box in terms of speed the acceleration and the powers as a running back. I'm interested to see how that whole unit sort of shakes out 'cause Najji has the ability to be that feature back. The guy thinks a lot of people aren't talking about right now, who could be sort of Josh Jacobs guy that comes out of nowhere. Brian Robinson, if he gets more touches him in Najji together, could be a really terrific Tam. Remaining moments you did a sophomore for every school, and we mentioned a couple, but as you look at that list, no particular order or preference here. But what other names stood out in your reporting and, and would you suggest that we pay the closest amount of attention to their to particularly in the SEC, I think are worth watching one Gitari Whitlow? Booby willow at Auburn. I really liked what I saw from him last year. The power that he had is not a huge running back. He has that I and can break tackles and win. He's healthy looked as good as any young running back. I saw in college football last year. And you look at what burns offense might have to do with an inexperienced quarterback, whether that's a true freshman in Bonex, or second year guy like Joey Gatewood they're gonna be leaning on him. So he's one and the other one for me is is as on at LSU defensive end slash. Outside linebacker. He had a huge game in that season opener coming out party and then got injured and was lost for the year..

"I mean, I'm sure this is I feel like I'm doing a fan bomb show for real now when I'm like, is the gap between Alabama and Auburn the biggest it's ever been. I'm sure Paul. I'm sure you all have talked about that at some point. But just for me as an outsider, I feel like it is, I feel like when I think of the best ten programs in college football Ted day. I'm not putting Auburn on the list are, you know, but I'm gonna get crazy and have Auburn beating Alabama the next three years. Okay. But I'm still saying rising. Yes. All right. So we now have five rising, and we have five Foley. But see who do we have on here? We want. Well, let's do Auburn Cody Knoxville is talking about Auburn Cody, what do you think? They're razzing. I think we've finally got a couple of good quarterbacks. Nothing Joa gay woods, going to be the man. But even if he stumbles, I think, Bonex come in, and light it up. He's got a good arm. He's accurate. And there's plenty of and going around. Plus, that I cannot tell you that I feel like a guy named beau. Knicks is the perfect name for an Auburn quarterback. Like I just feel like. Couldn't you just see Bo Nick's going in there, and making things happen? Oh, yeah. Got good genes. I'll tell you that much. But with the defense, we're gonna have a great defense, we're gonna hold people under twenty one points a game. And we always the years, we're not supposed to be great is, when we have our good years. Yeah. I think we could suppress the people so rising. Oh for sure. All right. There we go. And this is the first time that you know, Gus has been able to speak publicly since eight a so kind of an expected announcement we saw coming, and, you know, doing it going into the summer, you know, it gives you know, both Joey gate wouldn't Bonex a chance to really work with the first team wide receivers develop those that report over the summer and really take some leadership and some ownership of this offense going into fall camp. What what are the pros and cons of both? I mean, you gotta look at both of these guys that are both former top fifty routes nationally. So they have the talent there. You know, Joey Gatewood, you know, he's a guy he came in pretty highly touted, you know, the day that he signed with Auburn Gus malzahn, drew Cam Newman comparison kind of backtracked on that a little bit. And you know, we didn't really see him last year. He red shirted didn't play until the music city bowl. And even then he'll be played Mapo time. But, you know, something clicked kind of late in the season for him where you know, just turn the corner. And you know, it's been a new Joey Gatewood this the spring that they saw he had a renewed sense of confidence. You know, a lot of guys they come in. And you know, they don't always have you know, that want to you know, they kinda resign themselves to the fact that they're going to be sitting out the year. And I think that's what happened a lot with Gatewood last year. But now that he knew he had a real opportunity, you know, seize the moment, and you know, made the best of it. And she. He's huge. She can run his powerful. And you know, he's worked to improve his passing ability. You know, Knicks on the other hand, he's another dual threat guy of not quite as much as Joey gate where I would say, but you know, he's able to make plays with his legs and extend plays when things break down. And you know, you know, he's just a freshman just rolled in January. I mean, this kid's accomplished a lot and is a two time state champion Pinson valley at six Neil playing six say raining, Alabama, Mr. football, and he just, you know, came in and really, you know, impressed the coaches Tom green with is talking about Auburn. We know how good the defensive. But is it good enough to overcome a young quarterback especially early in the season and particularly against a brutal scheduled? I think this. This defense has what it takes. I mean, you look you look at what they're bringing back especially along the defensive line with Derrick Brown Marlon Davidson Nikko, the only, you know, real question on that defense right now who's gonna replaced on patriots? Russell at that knows tackle spot. You know, he he didn't put up big numbers. But you know, he was a four year starter in the SEC, and you need to if they can solidify that spot this defensive Indian good shape, especially they can control the line of scrimmage on that side. You know, they feel really good about the linebackers. Even though they've got to replace all their starters at linebacker. You know, they feel really good about the talent. This group has got you know, K J Brit and channel moon both juniors who've played the last two seasons, you know, really stepping in the bigger roles. And of course, you know, five star freshman tap. Oh, you know, he's really lived up to billing this spring and then that secondary. I mean, they've got a super talented to deep that safety with two seniors into sophomores. And then you know at the corner spots here. No egg monogamy has you know, what it takes to be a really good number one shutdown corner. Then jabbar's Davis moving over from nickel to the other corner spas really gonna compliment him. Well, Tom, we showed the schedule minute ago on our screen and for those who aren't.

We welcome in our next guest who would love to have number twenty four back in the lineup at full speed, coach Gus malzahn coaches, Tony Barnhart, how're you doing? Right down. I saw that piece and he's just had outstanding spring or players really embraced him and really looking forward to next season. Because let's let's go through spring out. I was I was with you a couple of weeks ago, and obviously any conversation you have about Auburn football starts at the quarterback position. Joey Gatewood Bonex both had good springs. Where did you leave with those guys? You don't name a starter? You don't have to name a star at this time of year. But where did you leave with those guys after the spring where I think the spring game all four played well, and I thought that was encouraging. So anytime you got four guys you feel like can run the offense. That's great. You know, the challenges, narrowing it down, and we got great information during the spring matter of fact, we're in the process of meeting with our quarterbacks and talking that through and we will have some kind of order. We're not going to name a starter this spring. It will go into fall camp, but we will narrow down and we'll probably do that in the next couple. Days. You know, we were talking earlier about about the running back position booby Whitlow didn't quite get to a thousand yards. You'd had a thousand yard rushers at Auburn for nine straight years. I know that's a priority to be able to run the ball. When you want to run the football. How how did that go? 'cause I knew that was that in the improvement of the offensive line was a big priority in spring. Yeah. You know, booby Whitlow and Cam Martin. "Well, let's that's hills. Years for your net worth mine. The callers and fifteen people around the corner, and we won't come up with five million. And I'm making fun of this. There you go. There you go. Rick. Thanks for the call. Yeah. I move. When in doubt, keep your mouth shut is my new my new mantra. I just assumed he had didn't really care after that fourth in the US open. I must have missed it. We'll take a break. We'll update you on Auburn football. There's spring game is Saturday. Brandon Marcello will join us next. He's had a good year. He's on the show listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. And we welcome. You back. Glad you are with us. Let's get to Brandon Marcelo. We talked to him as Auburn was continuing its run. Well, we'll start there for just a second. Brandon. Thank you, very very much want to talk about this frame game. But I do want to ask you in relation to Bruce Pearl. We had the FBI director Alan green on the other day. He said he would sit down with parole in the season is over that is now in the rear view mirror. Do we do we know anything about extending Bruce Pearl's contract? Yeah. They're in active discussions, actually, maybe even right now, we're speaking. And from the people I have spoken to I'm expecting something to be done, you know, not necessarily quickly, but they're working on it. I'm expecting someone think probably next week we can a half or so maybe even by the end this weekend. It's depends on how close they get together. As far as the the deal comes along. And what the assistant coach salary pool looks like an also Bruce Pearl's deal looks like for based off what I've been hearing. It's not gonna be Rick Barnes type money. I don't think they're going to go that high to four point seven million dollars. But he's going to have a pretty good. Nice deal one that will show that one over it's committed to him. But also he's committed to Auburn when you see the details as far as the buyout and all of that. But they're they're working really hard on it. And I think they'll have together your pretty smile only disappointment. With Bruce was the he didn't get his name in the UCLA job in time. But that has now been filled. Let's talk about the game this weekend. The Auburn spring game would beginning with quarterback. What's it? Look like. Well, you know, everybody was saying going as wide open race among four players. But really based on what I've been hearing is that it's really between two guys now. And it'll be that way when they open preseason camping August and those two players are Joey Gatewood, the redshirt freshman big guy when you see him in person, he looks like Cam Newton just as far as the strength is size. Definitely not Cam Newton in the way, he plays. But he can run the inside zone. Gives them a different dimension at the quarterback spot that they haven't quite had in quite some time. And then the other guy is a true freshman Bonex, the son of legendary Alva quarterback, Patrick nix who broke a bunch of state records last season as he won a state title Pinson valley here in the state of Alabama. Those two are battling it out. Right now, it appears they will exit the spring is the top two guys. I'm not so sure, Bruce or excuse me still still stuck on basketball now on. I don't think of now zone. We'll say it publicly, but everything I've been told over the last two weeks, it's those two players and when they start precinct camping August it'll be between those two and one of them will be the starter when they opened the season..

"But once if they were not project to be a first round pick or something along those lines where the the players could then come back to college. But to help the college game along make them commit to three years. Yeah. I like the plan. I I don't know if if you can get away with the long term commitment, but I keep hearing. And I think you're seeing some signals this week that that they're about to blow up the one and done again. But I mean, there's a lot of there's a lot of pieces of that puzzle of the players association. There's a lot there's a lot has to sign off on that. But I think I really think some of those the way the zayante situation plays out may impact that if he doesn't come back. Right, which I think he will by the way. Right. But yeah, the ba- so well, let me ask you to explain the baseball situation. So are there. I if you end up playing bay if you end up going if you don't make the decision to to sign what what are your what what happens to you? Then the way I understand if you were drafted and you don't like your draft status or your draft position. You remain you in baseball. You remain drafted by that team. But okay, you like you can return back to college. But you have to stay through your junior season. Okay. I search you're saying. So you're you're actually already drafted by the major league team, they retain your rights. You just don't get any payment. You don't you? Don't sign any contract, but they retain your rights. But if if if if the if the team doesn't think at you're quite ready or you don't think they're quite ready. You can return to college. But by when you return, you're committing to three year commitment. Thank you, very very much. Let's go to can't next in New Orleans. Can't welcome to the program. Good afternoon. Afternoon, call how you doing? I'm a big fan and the show. Thank you, very much you being gay or this parade known suits talk. When I got home hall and friends down here. What you think about the quarterback situation coming up in this year? I mean, we got Gatewood we got Bonex. How was Bonex not a superstar and SEC for the next coming years? Well, I think he will be a superstar. I think the real issue is Kenny help Auburn early on and not to state the obvious. But Gus malzahn can't wait three years for Bo. Knicks to matriculate into the kind of quarterback that we expect them to be or even resembling his father who was a really good quarterback and Auburn twenty five years ago. Auburn schedule is is ominous. You start off with Oregon which as one of the best quarterbacks in America in Justin Herbert, and then you you throw in pretty much everyone under the sun that first half of the season includes AM and includes a road trip. I believe to Florida you have LSU in there. The second half of the season. I may have that reverse. I think Florida maybe before LSU, and then you. And then you get the conclusion of the season with the home games. But, but but still home games against Georgia in Alabama. I mean, that's a that's a tough. That's a tough climb for for a quarterback who is really one of the best around, but has never played in college ball. And I know it happens all the time and we travel Stewart, but Trevor Lawrence didn't look that he was somewhat inconsistent though in the game. He had to get pulled back out and Kelly Brian came in and saved the game. We are up against a break. More to come including Andy Katz. One of the most knowledgeable basketball experts in the country, and we'll get take on tomorrow's big slate. Auburn in Kentucky and LSU and Tennessee. We'll also, of course, ask him. The prerequisite question about the requisite question about Zion listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast..

I just worry that when he gets to Auburn that skill sets going to remain at the same level that it's at high school, right? There's there's no there's no building of quarterbacks down there right now. And and it's really sad to see. I mean, I just it is just baffling. Yeah. We can get a camp down there. But Cam came in as Cam Newton. He didn't come in and develop into what he became. No. I mean Cam Newton had already been through two schools and had matriculated and head experience, and he didn't need much other than to put the compliments around him. And he had them. Now. Listen, listen. Yeah. I think you I'm not writing Gus malzahn off I've grown to like him over the last couple of years after not really knowing them. Well, but I yeah. I I think it's as much that as it is the schedule next year. But I mean, he he has very very little room for error. I right now, I I'm not I'm not I it's hard to imagine him having a great year. Do you assume that that's why he's taking over? All. Yeah. Play calling. No. I I we have both suited is doors. I believe it's going to be Bonex. And I spoke to some people down there recently. And I said, do you think he can do it? And he said it won't be easy. Really nice of you to call. Let's continue with more phone calls and Jackson is in Pennsylvania. You're on the air. Go right ahead. Jackson. Let me hit the Jackson you there. Yeah. Hi can. Yeah. I sure can't. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you, very own Paul first time. Great to have your so. Yeah, you know, Tennessee basketball receiving that number one ranking? And they kinda followed it with two close games. So my question is do you think Tennessee is deserving of that that ranking? And then if you do like where where would you see them stumbling next? Yeah. Let me say this, and I don't want any of my friends in Knoxville to take this the wrong way. I think it's really cool that they're number one. But a basketball ranking is a snapshot, and it's not going to mean very much in March what Tennessee needs to do is keep keep progressing. They it looks like maybe they the they made a flight step backwards the last two or three games. But but I don't think it's critical. The season is is is getting to a point where you're you're. I it's hard to it's hard to maintain excellence every night. But they did what they had to do. I think I think they will stumble. The two games against Kentucky are problematic. I'm I'm trying to remember what else they have. But I I think there when they get on the road. You know, the they very well may lose a game or two. I don't think it matters though. I think what happened with matters Tennessee is really the matchup in the NCWA tournament the higher the seed the better, that's a cliche, but it's also true. And they just need, you know. I mean last year, they would they lose to loyal. I mean, they just got caught up against a hot team that frankly, no one was going to stop and what you have to do and the NCAA tournament is is get the right matchups. And if if you're if you're a one seed, you're going to get you're you're going to be in really good shape until the Sweet Sixteen you'll pay you'll play the worst team..

It's hard to it's hard to maintain excellence every night. But they did what they had to do. I think I think they will stumble. The two games against Kentucky are problematic..

"To the table appear. Spiker Ross was really smart to make all the line calls complaints. Center or guard. Either one got really good feet. He's got good quickness. And I think the guy's going to be a really good player for a long time. Coach I've been coming here. I think this is my fourth year covering the senior bowl. It used to be just you college coach standpoint this year, there's coaches from all over the country here Myo Cristobal's here Barrio Dems here, what what is changed you think in terms of college coaches coming out and wanting to see this or support this or interact with more NFL guys. I think a lot of it's about relationships. You know, I always came to it because of supporting our players, you know, that are in the game. And you know, this games in Alabama. So I like to promote the game because it's good for the state. It's good for people. It's good for mobile. So. And I think when people see one person do it, you know, they they see the value in and of supporting the players and no different than the draft. I used to be one of the few guys went to the draft. Now, everybody goes, so it's just a support your players from the start from that day one signing eight through to the last day. And then even beyond that absolately. I think you know, we've got to think we had fifty four guys in the league this past year. And we support everyone of them. They all makes me feel great when they all want to come back out Obama because they had a great experience there. So we try to do the same thing we want our players to be more successful in life because they were involved in the program. This is just a part of it. You know, it's part of developing a career on the field. And we wanted to graduate school and developer off the field as well. Thank you. Coach. Thank good senior. Nick Sabin down in mobile. Let's get back to the calls at eight five five to four to seven to eight five and Lee is in Alabama elderly. Let's go on home, Paul. We are doing. Well. Thank you. I just wanted to hear your opinion on the Auburn quarterback rape coming up the spring. I think it's gonna be fun to watch. And I was wanted to say you had any inside or anything any? Yeah. A little bit. You know, I I think it's going to be Bonex who is a freshman the son of Patrick nix played on twenty years ago or more and more than twenty years ago. Twenty five I. I think it's always a little bit of a risk to go with a freshman. But people with whom I've spoken to that are part of that program believed that he's capable. He's got everything it takes. And ultimately, I think you'll be a great quarterback. Now. Whether it'll be a great quarterback on day one is simply open for open for debate. Well, you know, the four quarterbacks down there. I read a article other day the the last time they started the game. They were in hostile, right? I think I think it's gonna be fun to watch. I'm I'm looking forward to see what Gatewood. Yeah. No, listen, I think they have some good ones. But you know, the the concern I have is the schedule is very difficult it it's a tough schedule to learn on and to put it mildly. Gus malzahn has much on the line this coming season. Yeah. It and the schedule is tough. It's ridiculous. We we gotta go to Gainesville. I know that we do have Georgia and Alabama coming. Our place. I think. Yeah. No. That is Greg Georgia Alabama are at home, which is which is a break if you call playing Georgia and Alabama break, but if road games are Florida LSU in Texas AM yet. That's three flights is to play football. Yeah. In the opening game against Oregon is is another channel. Hey, thank you for the call..

"There Duke was thought to be the favourite according to our sources and Duke kind of pulled out just a few days ago when it became clear that West Virginia was probably gonna land him. But with this going on now, there's a lot of uncertainty not only about Austin kindles, you know, status for West Virginia. But also could he landed Auburn as a result? I think. Doors still very much open. But now aloft talk around kindle, they're trying to keep it, quiet. But we'll see what happens. But I think auburn's gotta chance right now. What's the view of kindle in terms of raw? Of course, were harbors that exactly over overwhelmed by by quarterbacks at the moment with experience. What's what's the view of him from down there? I think they just want more competition, and they want some some older guys on campus, you know, with which year it said, I'm leaving, you know, you've gotta competition between or among three players really with not a lot of experience. One of those players has never played college football in Bonex, Nick, sues Mr. football in the state of Alabama, the son of Auburn legends, Patrick nix. You have Joey Gatewood who did not play a game until garbage time in that blow out of Purdue and the music city bowling didn't really throw the ball. And then you have Molik Willis who seemingly is regressed since his first season this past year made some very difficult base of very strange Reeves and the zone read offense. He runs dual threat guy much different from the other quarterbacks on this campus, very similar to Nick Marshall. But there's a lot of concern about him and his decision making when he's on the field. So. So they were going to this spring with the situation where it looked like it was going to be a battle among those three and bone Bonex. I would think from talking to people even though he has yet to throw a pass on campus other than in the high school state championship game was seen as like the flight favorite. So I think getting an Austin kindle type in here with one at some more competition to the fray, but probably give Auburn a year or in his case, kindle, two years for Auburn to have another starter on campus and slowly integrate a guy like a bonus or Joey gate would into the starting lineup down the road. But as it stands now auburn's very short on the experience department, and I just wonder how Auburn is selling its quarterback competition to Austin kindle, or even when they were recruiting Kim Kelly Bryant is that Heo come in and be the starter right away. Or is it? Hey, Austin KENDALL you've ever played very much yourself at Oklahoma. You're gonna have to come in and win this job. No. Promises. How does that set with him when he's probably being promised the world at other programs like West Virginia talking to Brandon Marcel Brandon UC Gus malzahn, a lot more than than we do. We we saw him out in California. And he was unusually relaxed seems like a different Gus malzahn from recent time now, I say that because we all know what he went through and whatever has gone through in the aftermath of last season. Let's talk about him. And and spinning forward to next year. We're we talked about the dearth of quarterbacks right now at least experience, and we know that schedule is close to being ridiculously hard. Oh, what's your outlook for the Tigers in nineteen? Well, I I think their defense is going to be top fifteen again they've been caught fifteen the last three years they returned Derrick Brown who was probably going to be a first or second round pick this upcoming year. I was shocked that he came back through. Senior season that a lot of talented guys on the defensive side of the come back. Obviously the big question is going to be quarterback if they can get good quarterback play. And also get good running back play. 'cause I kind of took it down where turn this season. This is a team that should compete for nine wins next season. Now does that make Auburn fans completely happy? I don't know..

"Quarterback signees coming in five star dual threat quarterbacks at a ton of records at eleven high school football great legacy from his dad as a QB in high school coach lots of buzz about him. If Clemson can bring in a freshman quarterback and go to the national championship. Could Auburn do the same with him in twenty nineteen? He also says can we give BRUCE'S own microphone you or podcast or your hotel? Had a hard time hearing him. Yes. Just handed me. Thank you. I saw Bo Knicks at the elite eleven his dad for people who aren't familiar was is Patrick nix. Former Auburn quarterback who'd been a college coach for a little while point offense, coordinator, Miami and has been a successful high school coach he's considered a lot of folks the best quarterback or the most maybe the most ready to come in to college football make an impact this is not considering you talk to to college coaches and also folks who who've worked at the elite eleven as one of the better college quarterback classes, a lot of people think it's down across the board. And that Bonex is probably the best of of not a great bunch point that I would think is Trevor Lawrence. Obviously really talented but the cast around him. I mean, I don't think Auburn has that around him it just to me there's a big difference. And also, quite honestly, a big difference between who Auburn is playing against their division as opposed to what clemson's got. I mean, there's almost no margin for error when I look at. Let's say bonus coming in their jerks stems pretty talent that injured stood him struggled in that offense. Offense didn't exactly until the bowl game. Look, very crisp. Well, so you bring Bonex, and let's say he is the starter to is going to be back for Alabama. I don't think Alabama's taken a step back, and they might even be better. The probably Quinton Williams will probably move on. But that's still got a lot of good young players in LSU should be better than they were this year when they won ten games. I think Texas AM is only going to get better under JIMBO Fisher MRs gonna lose some really good players on defense. They're gonna to Nick FitzGerald when you talk about the top three in that division. Iding? It's going to be Alabama LSU an. AM? They're not there if anything they're going to be better than they were this year. So I think that's doesn't bode well if you're gonna use the Clemson analogy as far as Bonex, I don't know what the answer for over. And is exactly I mean, you saw they did to Purdue in the game and bowl games as Ralph said or not really the best way sometimes to measure these things, but they got you could tell like they've got play. They got guys who can make plays in space. But some reason during the season their offense was kind of a massive legitimate quarterback. So I've just come at this point to expect that when you expect big things from Auburn, though, this point when you have low expectations wore them, they do well, they will probably have low expectations next year. So maybe it'll be Clemson either Alabama or Clemson versus Auburn in the national championship game. All right last question from Sean, Sean in Chicago, the other news, we haven't had a chance to address happen..
