A half dozen camera coworkers walked off the set to protest working conditions. The anguish over the death of Hutchins and reported walkout comes during a moment where film crews are already antsy. Earlier this month, Ayaz, the union representing about 60,000 crew members seem to be on the verge of a strike over working conditions among other things. My colleague met James covers a business of television digital disruption in the entertainment industry. Meg, welcome to the times. Thank you, Gustavo. You covered the onset problems on Russ, leading up to the incident. What was going on? So this was really a chaotic set, particularly last Thursday. There had been a walkout about 7 30 or 8 in the morning by camera operators who were really upset about working conditions, including the fact that they had been promised to have hotel rooms close to this production facility. It's called the bonanza creek ranch near Santa Fe New Mexico, but as the production began, they were told that no, they were going to have to drive to and from Albuquerque, 50 miles away every day to work on this film set. And film set hours are long and arduous. They report to work about 6 30 in the morning. They don't get done till 6 30 or 7 at night. Then there's about an hour of cleaning up camera crews. So the crew was really unhappy. There was other tensions, reports of people yelling at each other that day. They were behind because after these camera operators left, they called a non union cruise to fill in. There was only one camera operator. So that was slowing the day. So I think it is pretty safe to say that it was intense and stressful day. And you also talk to an armorer who said a veteran armor who said he wanted nothing to do with the production because he felt it was an accident waiting to happen. Yes, exactly. This veteran armor, he was actually a prop master. He talked to the producers about this job. And he thought it was odd that it was only two weeks out before production began when they were reaching out for him for this very important job. The reason his job was so important is the prop master is in charge of all of the old west sort of accoutrements. You know, the wagons, you know, the guns, the old, you know, flower sacks. And he knew from 30 years in the business that, you know, handling weapons was not anything to play around with. So he wanted a staff of two people. He wanted a assistant person and he wanted an armorer. And the producers of Russ said no, one person was going to do both.

"And once again. I'm not trying to go back and forth with people on it But the ability to check the cylinder on a single action revolver is is impossible to open a chamber the cylinder because the cylinder doesn't it doesn't swing out like a modern pissed like a modern revolver. it has one loading port i e loading gate and allows one chamber of access at a time And you have to have the hammer half-cocked in order to rotate the cylinder now. Once that gate is closed. It's nearly impossible to ascertain whether the gun is loaded. And if the gate is open you can maybe see a cylinder and a quarter a cylinder and a happy can't see if the whole gun is loaded So that's that's the first thing about it in order to inspect each round. You have to remove each one individually one at a time by half cocking the hammer. So you can't even rotate the cylinder freely you'd have to have cockpit take out the the round cock. It again moved the cylinder so it's actually quite a pain to try and inspect one of these rounds So it would be and what we're seeing here is probably laziness to check the round. Every single time would be something that people would stop doing. And so that's that's the whole thing with the single action revolver and so it was probably just like yeah the guns cold because they didn't want to check it every single time the whole point. I don't think we'll ever find out why there was an actual round of ammunition in the cylinder. Why some why projectile was in the gun in the first place Let's see susan said. Three people were handling the gun in the scene. This is the armor. Hannah gutierrez read then assistant director david. All who then handed the gun to baldwin. This is interesting safety Cova nineteen safety protocols gutierrez read who is the armor set at the prop guns on a cart and then left. So we're talking about the rules. Were all three guys are gonna have to be there. Accordingly according to this affidavit hannah gutierrez was not allowed to be near David halls the assistant director or baldwin because of mclovin so she set the guns up and left them outside. So i know. Some of my conspiracy theorist people in the chair makers say channel dot com forward slash chat. There was a point of time where the guns were not under observation. She set up the guns and left the cart. Outside bonanza creek ranches church set hall did not know live rounds. Were in the gun that he handed the baldwin so all the sudden yes yes guys are chain of custody. We have a chain of custody issue because of makovich. So is it her. I don't know could somebody have walked up. Opened up the chamber throw around in and taking it back also. There are reports that this gun that was being used as cold. Eighteen seventy three was being used for target practice at different points. Not just as a prop gun back into the article when they came back from lunch creeping shadow prompted the camera to be moved to a angle so the original shot had to be changed because there was a shadow in the frame which is why she was probably in front. The original shot live rounds are never ever ever ever ever ever permitted permitted on a movie set ever ever. Nope never That question they don't ever want them onset. So check this out. The original angle of the camera had to be moved so originally the gun was not pointed at the simmer cinematographer at the camera but but they had to move it because there was a shadow as baldwin was explaining how he was going to draw his gun and where his arm was position it discharged. It's a negligent negligent discharge. Yes that's right rule. One never point the gun at anything you don't intend to destroy but we're pretty sure alec baldwin either a does not know the four universal gun rules or be due to be an exhausted and all this other stuff played a little fast and loose with the rules because they were behind filming and things needed to get done Souza's said he was looking over hutchinson shoulder. When the gun discharged hutchinson hutchings grabbed her midsection stumbled backwards and was assisted to the ground. Russell recall hearing allow bang seeing a bloody sousa and hearing hutchinson. Said she couldn't feel her legs. The search warrant was released saturday sunday night allowing for a seizure of all firearms firearms components used their unused ammunition whether it be live ammunition or proper ammunition. They're even saying in the warrant. They were collecting live ammunition from the set. The shooting came to came. But if you have any issues about that you can find out more about abilities by cast on twitter. Real easy to find on twitter at billy dis and also facebook abilities podcast and youtube. Why we are going to talk about today. There's a couple of different things. We're going to talk about this horrible situation with alec baldwin and this accident. That happened on a movie. Set that he was working on in which one person was killed and another person was injured With the use of some sort of a prop a firearm. And we're going to talk about that. And i want to be clear when i talk about this. This isn't going to be critical of alec baldwin. There's been a lot of hate directed at him from his political foes so to speak and there's also been people running to his defense because they liked his political stances or his ability to act. Or what have you and we simply have to wait for the investigation to take place. Exactly what happened here. Who was involved whose responsibility was to in and obviously on a movie set. There's people who take care of specialized special effects props and things like that. We're going to discuss that a little bit. But we're not going to get into. Who's to blame specifically in this given case because they facts simply have not come out yet through a proper investigation. Now i know there's people and they've already presented themselves to point out that alec baldwin as passed a judgment on social media of of certain events and and that may well be the case. I do not know. But i can tell you that. It doesn't matter to me if he has. That's not something we do here. So getting back to if you're new to the program. I am not ideologically driven okay. I don't judge things based upon. Who's involved to me. A given action is either right or it's wrong. It doesn't matter who's doing it or who's the victim are these people Are they the people i agree with. Are these the people. Don't like that doesn't factor in a given action is either right or wrong okay. And that given action is either right or wrong. Regardless of the people involved what their political affiliation is or what they've done online in the past this argument. Well what about 'isms those are things that drive me crazy. Okay if i murder someone. My defense can't be well. What about ted bundy. How many people did he kill. That's that doesn't justify action. And what about. 'isms are currently a widely used by both sides of the political aisle the ideological divide. And it's not something that we do here. Also today we are going to talk about the role of digital media and how accessible it is by more and more people and digital media isn't necessarily social media for example. A video is video. It isn't necessarily part of social media although it can be and had very often is interwoven into social media because people use social media to promote their digital media. We we do that here. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that but it's it's becoming a wider and wider field and what role that does this play in. How events like the alec baldwin situation are being analyzed. We're going to talk about that a little bit. And i'm gonna try to go some places that you might not expect with that okay and while we're on the subject of anything associated with social media. We're also going to talk about just very briefly facebook and a possible new social media platform from a certain former president. All that is heading your way in regard to the alec. Baldwin tragedy is probably the best way to describe it. I don't know how this happened. We're gonna talk about it a little bit on the movie set of rust which was a movie that it was in production in new mexico. Apparently a firearm discharged on the set director of photography halina hutchins who was forty two years old was transported to the hospital via helicopter and subsequently pronounced dead by medical personnel also director. Joel sousa forty eight years. Old was transported to the hospital by ambulance and his condition is apparently not been released in detail. But i've heard that there was a wound to the shoulder. We have an edited portion of the nine. One one call for you right. Here are bonanza creek. Dental shot on a movie set by top gun. We need help immediately off. The nancy creek grants come on. Stay on the phone with me. We're going to get some help okay. Director and cameraman.

"Brought to you by State Farm, like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the movie set of rust, killing the director of photography, Santa Fe sheriff says. By The Associated Press, Santa Fe New Mexico. A prop firearm discharged by veteran actor Alec Baldwin, who was starring and producing a western movie killed his director of photography, and injured the director Thursday at the movie set outside Santa Fe, the Santa Fe county sheriff's office sad. Susa H 48 was taken by ambulance to christus St. Vincent regional medical center, where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries. Production has been halted on the film. A spokesperson for Baldwin said there was an accident on the set involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. Hutchins was director of photography on the 2020 action film archenemy starring Joe Manganiello, a 2015 graduate of the American Film Institute she was named a rising star by American cinematographer in 2019. I'm so sad about losing Helena, and so infuriated that this could happen on a set, said archenemy director Adam Egypt mortimer on Twitter. She was a brilliant talent, who was absolutely committed to art and to film. Deputies responded about two p.m. to the movie set at the bonanza creek ranch after 9-1-1 calls came in of a person being shot on set, sheriff's spokesman Juan Rio said. He said detectives were investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged. This investigation remains open and active Rios set in a statement. "Office confirms that these two people were shot on the set of this movie, and it's bad. A prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin, who was also a producer on the film. That's very serious. Very serious. And investigation is going to remain open and active. No charges have been filed because it's just too soon yet. Witnesses continue to be interviewed by detectives and these criminal investigators were called to the scene at the bonanza creek ranch just outside Santa Fe. Basically sources say Baldwin cocked the gun and he hit susa and Hutchins. And then the entire location went on lockdown during this investigation. So Baldwin was apparently unaware of the type of ammunition in the gun. That's what they're saying. And a representative from the production said that, look, we halted it for the time being and the safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority blah, blah, blah, blah. Listen to me. Traditionally, the prop master are the armorer is responsible for firearms and firearms safety on his set, such as the movie rust. This isn't the first time an onset death has been caused by a gun. As I mentioned, John Eric hexton was killed in 1984 on the set of a TV series called cover up. When he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks. And in 93, Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee, he died after a piece of a slug was lodged in his spine from a prop gun fired on this set of the movie that krell by another actor. And both incidents were called accidents. But the very first safety bulletin adopted by the industry labor management safety committee dealt with the dangers of blank ammunition. Blanks can kill the bulletin says, treat all firearms as though they are loaded. Now I hate to say this, but if Alec was fucking around with a weapon, not ready to be used for his scene in which he knew should have been handled by the armorer until then he should be charged with involuntary manslaughter. That's 5 to 15 years. And if the armorer left the weapon loaded with live ammo, unsecured on his set with dozens of people walking by, then he should be under arrest and in jail for criminally criminally negligent homicide. Why was Alan Bowen pointing a gun at his cinematographer? Was it a joke? Was it again? Like I said, people have died on set before with a blank cartridge. That's why so many precautions are now taken. On top of burnt powder smoke, flaming heat, there are bits of shrapnel from the shell casing and it can and has killed people at close range, but there's a lot of questions here. Why was there live ammo on set? Why don't we shoot twice? Did he shoot twice?

"This is a while we can do because crazy. Not only do we have a we wake up today and we have a merger between bonanza creek and extraction which comes out of left field. I was calling the whole time. Something else. I was completely wrong. I can shape the back half of that. I thought it was going to be. Maybe a crestone extraction merger guest. Not bonanza keith wooten. After stealing highpoint very interesting. Mike you and i have been michael. You and i have been doing podcast for about a year over a year. And that's the first time you've ever been admitting to being wrong. I am stunned. I'm gonna curl up in the fetal position. Your been known to be have been called the wizard but some mistakes every once in while so you said the other day though mighty have fallen your own mentor. I am my own mentor. We can put out. We need those t shirts rolling out i need. I need that embroidered right underneath here. All right so besides that besides this merger which normally we would spend the entire episode talking about this merger but in light of this colonial pipeline. Shutout it doesn't even look that big so for those of you who've been sleeping on iraq this weekend. I know countries moving back up concerts this weekend. I'm gonna give you a quick rundown of what happened. Friday colonial pipeline which is part owned by. Shell decided to shut down. Its pipelines as a precaution and engaged a third party cybersecurity for to investigate in which they later confirmed with a ransomware attacks. So here's what happened. Let let me see. Let me pull it up here. So the decision to shut the pipeline down. Now to give you an idea this pipelines fifty five hundred miles. It runs from linden new jersey. All the way down to houston lake charles and delivers about a little over fifty fifty two percent of the east coast of refined gas supply. So this is a midstream company but this is a refined product. We're not talking about natural gas. We're not talking about an unrefined. This is hardcore gasoline. We could see that the supply disruptions are so close to the consumer. Were the scary. Part is we could begin to see some of this up in the industry. They call it downstream xactly. So there's this company called called called dark side they took about one hundred gigabytes data. But here's the company. It was an extortion scheme. So i think why would it rolled out. A lot of people. Were very scared. Because it's a cold smokes. We've got a ransomware attack. Where all shut down. Well when you die be doing. It was all business data store and they said that it would leak all the sensitive data to the internet if they did not pay the ransom and so the company decided to shut down the pipeline as a precaution in order to make sure that obviously they'd have because there's this company but a wild story because this is a legacy fifty percent of all refined products gasoline diesel jet fuel that goes to the east coast and they haven't said where they're gonna reopened yet. It still shutdown. We're talking. This was late friday afternoon. Stu it's now monday. It's we're recording this monday. Central eleven central. My goodness what michael. The end result is going to be a horrific on this. Just whenever you're done with the.

"But we've only finished the first of three lags on this journey to the yukon beginning the second leg. Jack must make a choice as he sets foot on. Alaskan soil. does he hid out from the established overnight. Town of or should he get going from its neighboring and fellow nascent the now thriving town skagway. The two are only a few miles apart from each other but each leads to the start of very different trails over some serious mountains die will take him through the chilcott pass. I'll skagway leads to the white pass. Both have their pros and cons. Luckily you don't have to decide. I'm going to take you on both. Not wanting to ditch jack london just yet. Let's fall him on the chill coot basically this trails for fans of mountaineering. So i hope jacqueline has been working on as cardio and doing his endurance training. Chill coot is grueling. Thirty three mile path that increases several thousand miles in elevation and the last half miles is just cruel in that short distance along the trail. Climbs one thousand feet. It is so steep here. It actually has a fifteen hundred step. Staircase carved into the ice and snow appropriately. The gold fever stampedes call it. the golden staircase. Have you ever seen klondike. Gold rush photos of countless people warmly covered from head to toe ascending steep snow-covered paths in a line longer than those at an amusement park during peak hours. If so it's probably a photo from the chill cute trail in a case that doesn't sound difficult enough to some of you endurance athletes. Let's add a ton of weight to the equation. I mean that ton literally as in two thousand pounds. Naturally the exact number will differ for every klondike. But that's a fair estimate. In addition to their clothes and equipment are required by canadian. Lot to bring a one year supply of food if they skimp amount team very well. Stop them right here on the path summit so in order to move. Although supplies klondike are going back and forth on this arduous thirty three mile trail our future author jack. London figures that in moving his gear. He traveled each mile of the chill. Could pass twenty to thirty times. Good god if jack wasn't in shape when he got here he is now some get help moving their gear. By hiring less well-off stampedes or indigenous packers before personally setting off this massive eighteen ninety seven to ninety eight gold rush schuylkill. Jim in george karmic. Met doing this job here on the shelf pass in fact. Jim's nickname scoop them comes from that work. Scuba means strong in its new jargon and that's certainly inaccurate description of this well built physically powerful tag man. Okay now let's check out the other out the white pass trail here. We are back at the head of the tei inland. We're just a few miles away from die now. In skagway this path is longer. It's also significantly easier so if you're looking at one of those photos of stampede is still in a ridiculously long line but on far more level terrain and accompanied by horses might have been taken here and yes not being so steep. It needs a little staircase to surmount. Stampede can use horses to carry their supplies through the white pass. Nice unfortunately some conquers knowledge of and concern for their beasts of burden does not equal. They're interesting getting gold. As a result the over pack and overwork their horses as the fatigued animals trudge along the slick. Snowing boulder covered trail might slip and sometimes deadly results as tens of thousands of klondike take this path. Hundreds of horses plummet to their death on the white pass trail of course. Horses aren't the only casualties on these trails. All sorts of dangers await stampede. My dine avalanche like the one that kills forty three men climbing chill cute on april third eighteen ninety eight then hypothermia disease as well suicide and even murder short as the second leg of the journey may be. It's the most dangerous but those stampede who persevere through either the chill or white passes aren't done yet the other side only puts them at the headwaters of the yukon river usually at lake lindemann or it. They now have to build their own boats and take them the last five hundred or so miles dawson city. This goes smoothly for some like author. Jack london having taken the chill cooed pass. he's now at lake linden. He and his group take two weeks to build a boat. Then push off on the lake the white horse rapids post plenty of danger but they manage it then co safely through the more placid remaining four hundred miles all told they spend about one month and they're small watercraft others aren't so lucky beyond struggling to build about so many lives are claimed by the waters here that the canadian police begin to regulate travel for instance. If a party includes women and children they're flat out forbidden from the white horse rapids. They'll have to carry their boats down past that point before getting on the water. So we've made it to dawson city and there are many fascinating fun stories that can be told of life. Appear perhaps best known. is that of the successful prospector. Swiftwater bill gates who offers the renowned beauty in nassau girl. Gussie more weight in gold. If she'll marry him she turned him down flat. But alas we can't -tarian pan. For gold bonanza creek time is short and we cannot let this episode in without meeting the legendary. Connie who's taken over. The last frontier city of skagway got to hurry his long.

"The tag fashion. When george sees a familiar face in a boat rowing toward their camp. It's a local prospector. Robert or bob henderson. George calls out. Is bob exits his boat. Hello bob where in the world did you drop froman. Where do you think you're going just came down from ogilby. What's the idea about. There's been a prospect found in a small creek. That heads up against the dome i think it empties into the klondike about fifteen miles up and i'm looking for a better way to get there then. Going over the mountains from the indian river got any kind of a prospect. We don't know yet. We can get a prospect on the surface. When i left the boys were running up an open cut. Get the bedrock. Bob has georgia's attention at this point. He's ready to see if he can get in on the action. What are the chances to locate up there. Everything staked bob pauses. He glances at georgia's first nation. Family then response. There's a chance for you george. But i don't want any damn cy wash stake in on that creek. Let me explain that last. Line the word bob. Just used to describe georgia's family cy. Wash comes from a pidgin language culture new jargon. The word itself is believed to be a corruption of the french word sauvage. That is savage in other words. Bob just call georgia's family damn savages. Nothing georgia's used to hearing but that's where the conversation ends. Bob returns to his boat pushes off into parts to rejoin his partners. Well georgia is interested in prospecting. But he isn't going to do so with bob not after that refusal of his family the next day george schuylkill jim and charlie set out on their own rather than going up the klondike river joining bob. At gold. bottom creek the three men head up the tributary closest to them to rabbit creek. The next few days are of no real value. Find a scarcest. Traces of gold and eventually hike over ridge that. Bring them to the creek. Where bob henderson's crossing has again. George promises to let bob know if he finds gold back on robert creek share the wealth but then bob refused to sell tobacco to scoop them. Jim or charlie because the two men are tag h. George isn't going to forget that finding nothing worthwhile near bob. The trio hike back over the ridge and on august seventeen one of them possibly scan. Jim just washing out a dish pan sees it fixed soft yellow metal among flaky slabs of rock just visible to the naked eye on the cool clear running water. Yeah it's old. Three screening dance with joy. Collect some then staked claims now. Here's where things get murky about the discover by canadian law a prospector may only have one mind cling in a given mining district at a time. There's exactly one exception to this. Though where we're discovers gold gets to claims in this case. George is credited as the double claiming. Discover while jim and charlie take one claim each but did george discover it or as some accounts say did the three fear that locals incanadian law with respect to first nation making the discovery so jim chose the him the credit to his white brother-in-law or degeorge duplicitous duplicity pushed this idea on his brother in law to get the double claim. These are questions with which historians grapple but will never find satisfying answers. All we know for sure is that georgia's credited with the discovery gets to claims. Jim charlie get one claim each and as they record their claims bragging all the way ringing. Hundreds of prospectors upright creek. Soon renamed bonanza creek. They never tell robert henderson. His refusal to pan beside or sell tobacco tags. Man literally cost him a fortune house. The half for karma schuylkill. Jeff george karmic and charlies find. Isn't the first western canada or alaska. On a small scale level. Alaskan gold mining goes back to the russian era russian. American company actually kept close. Hold on the extent of its knowledge of gold for fear that prospectors would overrun the region. The discovery of gold near sitka around eighteen. Seventy two peaked. Some interest amd prospecting picked up all the more when. Joseph juneau and richard harris found gold just a little to the north and east of sitka in the gastineau channel in eighteen. Eighty prospectors flocked to this spot at the top of alaska's panhandle and within a year. They stabbed the first new settlement in alaska since the russian era. After some flirtations of naming harrisburg for richard harris. The miners decided to go with his french canadian partner and dubbed juno and unlike so many other mining towns. This one won't disappear after the goal. Does eventually it will replace silicon as the district's capital. So all that to say. Schuylkill jim charlie. George discovery isn't the first bit of gold found up north. And as you can tell from robert henderson's presence there discovery wasn't even the first with of gold along the klondike river but this discovery changes the game. The far western part of canada's northwest territories will soon break off as the yukon territory. And the spot where george and his family were camping. The confidence of the yukon and klondike rivers will become dawson city. Dawson will be haunted chickens of thousands of prospectors and have all the economic. Trappings they bring saloons. Dance halls gambling houses given the last few episodes. You know the drill. But while the klondike or yukon gold rush in canada it has a large impact on the united states as americans joined the fray and as many of these soon to be prospectors. Come via alaska. It will greatly impact this far north american district. The deluge of prospectors really gets going next year in july eighteen ninety seven that month two ships each with passengers carrying small personal fortunes and klondike gold make their way to san francisco and seattle. Respectively is the newly enriched passengers disembark word of their wealth and its origin spread like wildfire through the nations newspapers. Eager would be prospectors soon. As klondyke or given the rapid movement stampede irs are fast on their way to the pacific coast looking aboard a ship that can take them up the inside passage to alaska from which they can continue on to the klondike now. Klondike irs could travel overland through canada. But as we know from episode eighty three overland travel is slow arduous in pretty much sucks without robust railroads. So it's not exactly shocking. Most klondike opt to head to the west. Coast usually san francisco california or seattle the recently upgraded from territory to state of washington then travelled by ship to alaska. If they really wanna blow money and go in the right not frozen time of year klondike irs can sail just under three thousand miles from seattle.
