"Or anything I said but they were high up executives that were like straight up. We are treating our audiences. Ah this was like a fucking meeting do big everyone at Sony meetings. Were some executive was like we have to treat our audience like it is the first time they've ever sat in a movie theater ever anytime. A movie comes out which means they're dumb. They don't know what's going on there idiots and you know but the thing is is like whether you want to treat the audience like an idiot or not and whether the audience is let's say it is like a dumb audience and they don't get what you're showing or whatever I truly we believe that inherently there is something within every human that can just tell if something is genuine or not or your being if you're faking and if this this is something that I that I just know is genuine a and it means so much to you and the fact that we haven't seen you in like five years right. You are buried in this thing which means it means so much to you and I think that no matter what you know whether people like it or not they'll see we it is something that is truly an expression of you and something that's real and that's a priceless thing that you can't really like fake. You just can't fake that and people see that that's why all these fucking superhero movies come out from like D._C.. Specifically specifically what Boring Shit that I felt nothing from and it's because there's nothing genuine behind it all a formula now. It's a formula but you I truly believe you're going to get some return from this bowman because you put your heart and soul into it that will show. I haven't seen it yet. I'm already attributing the word visit visceral to feel like it's going to be and I hate that I even forgot up look. I didn't forget about it but I just felt like maybe it wasn't a podcast topic because I didn't know where you were awkward..

"I mean that's totally the vein I'm because I I mean if I didn't know you and if I didn't know anything about this and and what I do is like a week before fantastic fest I just like look through the list of movie second. Write down which ones I really WANNA see. If that was in there I it would be a must see for me because those are the movies that are just like you know. It's not the big studio like 'cause fantastic fest. We'll have stuff like arrive like the arrival or like the witch was there <hes> but they also have these like insane really he cool labors of love documentary exactly you won't see them. Maybe ever again cool with that realm too. I feel like it's a cult classic type movie away like totally yeah I mean there was a I saw documentary henry about boy band like like people that are obsessed with boy bands and I don't think I've ever seen it pop up anywhere. You're talking about hot party but yeah it's like a perfect pacifist movie. I WanNa see I would love to I actually submitted to them and then I'm like a bull crap submitted to some in its original form but unlike the names changed the movies like totally different tone and what do you do if they come back to. You and they're like accepted yeah. You can't really submit it more than once yeah <hes> from what I can tell but to me the fine print of that is unless the film has undergone some massive change and I think it has yeah yeah yeah. It's totally been reframed. I probably shot another thirty new minutes of in the middle much so much work yeah five years five years and I was taking a P P at my house before I came here and I was thinking about the time aspect and I said those happen too when you usually right at the end relax everything yeah okay but I was thinking like not the human cost but like the the social cost of this. I think I had to decline four to five hundred things I friends over the five years because you yeah you needed to del you needed to be this moon there yeah exactly yeah because nobody makes nobody puts their heart and soul and artistic integrity and life and everything on the line and doesn't at least make something that someone else will appreciate like you. The people just know like I was just talking to a lot about this yesterday about how like people say the general audience of an entertain entertain of entertain the in the entertainment world are dumb and you have to treat them like they're dumb and when I worked at Sony I don't know if his brakes N._A._N._D._a.'s.

"And I'm like we have the keys to that backyard letting someone the gate. It's not kicking us out right. We can all hang out at this Barbara your enriching the party and Shit at the barbecue you can certainly kick them out but Malino but there's a there's a threshold author Booze Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah you could just talk to any idea like I don't think I've ever been to a barbecue where there isn't like you know several people I never seen in my life and I get along just fine with those people people over because it's fucking barbecue and everyone's there for the same thing to just celebrate and have good. You can't handle somebody you just go to the other part of the yard and guess what you don't even have to interact with that at all yeah. That's the fun part about that. Wow what a fucking cool story and do you do you think is so this is why there's like nothing about that that festival. This is why there's no documentaries documentaries or any thing because they squash at all <hes>. They're just in control being scared and I wasn't I was like here's his opinion and then he ends up having fun. You know what they told me was. We don't think that how you portrayed our festival is is GonNa make people that don't want to come to it and I was like wow so I had to make you a free commercial because there are films about the festival but they're all just like this is the best video offended any institution that big should be subject to critique. You know whether it's Walmart became could roll what people say and you could certainly find negative things about the festival online. So what are they trying to accomplish in their due diligence to keep their images squeak they have they try to note that bulletproof image you know because once they become uncall- over that's so funny because there's the ironic part of the whole situation is that they're this institution of of counterculture and they're doing the most on four -tarian. I always think they talk about this. Male persons statue yeah or like an overarching man and it's like well. They're acting like you know they're supposed to be destroying at the end of the festival. It's like okay well when you're threatening people with lawsuits threatening there's probably a cash prize associated with that program that we don't even realize it and that's the thing like a lot of these these dollar thing yeah. It's an industry truly is an industry and people look at it like I mean maybe back in the day was something that was just like truly <unk> about finding yourself and and you know becoming a new and leaving all the bad memories bad sure but it's like but it's the same thing like how COMECON was a comic book convention in Someone's Baseman and they were just showing off like traded buying comic books. It's like yeah. They're still comic books there but it's like it's an industry. It's it's it's supplies like like an entire amount of like like unnamed amount of money for San Diego San Diego flourishes because of it with most pop and week of the year yeah and it's like it's interesting that even behind these these seemingly kind of like positive <hes> places is an and events. They're still like bureaucracy. There's still money there still lives attached to them and and it and it's just that starts to get kind of messy as good and bad with everything is and and you know and I guess your I mean and you don't hate. Hey no I don't I don't and I think you can have really transformative experience there but I also think you know you take hard drugs. You can have a transformative experience in McDonald's parking lot looking at Bal truly can so I think that's a big unspoken part of it is like I had this incredible. Spiritual experience like you did drugs. It's also just a Bagel hot party so rate has ever been too hot party the hot yoga yo Yo yo what's up ladies and gentlemen..

"It's very different different. I think I've almost edited this movie like four or five times. You've got like five different movie pretty much and this is like the best version and you know I'm kind of. I'm not setting out to make fun of them but it is kind of an expose I mean you see the success of the fire fest. Docs people love a scandalous story about something positive sunlight you guys WanNa play hardball with me. You pick the wrong southern boy yeah but then that's that element and then the other element is when filming with Elmore and getting these interviews we learn about his journey into the country and I worked closely with my friend Alejandro Venezuelan on translating and working with Elmar editing a lot of the Spanish scenes and we learn about him crossing the border and his harrowing experience he got separated from his group in a thunderstorm at night in the desert and the Border Patrol people rated them with dogs he fell down a ravine in the rain and rub mud on himself and he thinks that disguised him from dogs yeah and then he rambled and then he ran vote in Predator and then he walked for two or three days by himself until it came across another group group there was crossing and they're like where are you going the same way you are and they're like you're going the wrong direction. He got like disoriented so they find him and bring him get him to a safe house. Bring him to L._A.. Like I don't want to go over to many of the details this but this is all in the reenacted all we did like tasteful reenactments sham so that's all in the film now. This is a huge movie. I think it is and it just kept immigration. Censorship now like so much commentary speaking talk about the visit open with like a they wouldn't let us show you start juicy soon yeah pretty soon. I don't think it's the first scene and it's all kind of in flux like the other day I any editor will tell you a big project at some point you have to break it down into scenes like literally on pieces of paper and push him around and I think I had seventy eight scenes. They're mostly about forty seconds to a minute and moved them all around and then so they all still could be moved but I was thinking okay now. I got the last four scenes like what's the order and what's the tone of them and I said what is the meaning of this movie because that will tell me you know and I hadn't almost hadn't quite nailed it down in like a week ago. I was looking at all the papers and I said this movie at the end of the day is about the American dream to me and like the spirit of adventure. It's shouldn't be relegated to white people or like white men or you know like privileged people like we should. All embrace someone's desire to seek a better life like our nation's founded on that and we all celebrate it but like unless it's these people or those people a lot of long list of yeah. Let's you know I think of it is like a barbecue like when my dad asked character like we're living in this barbecue of privilege in the backyard you know like me especially as a straight white man in America

"This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm also Chang. Audie cornish. The Pentagon today released a report on sexual assault in the military and the numbers are disturbing. An anonymous survey showed assaults increased in all services and was the highest in the Marine Corps and about one quarter of all women across the military experience sexual harassment acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan wrote a memo to all the services. He said, quote, this is unacceptable. We must and will do better NPR's Pentagon correspondent, Tom Boman joins us. Now. Welcome to the studio. Tom, let's start with those numbers. What does the report tell us about the prevalence of sexual assault? Well, Pentagon officials are calling this a significant increase last year. The Pentagon says some twenty thousand service members of that about thirteen thousand women seventy five hundred men experienced some type of sexual assault. But only one third of those filed a report now that twenty thousand figure Audie is thirty seven. Percent higher than two years ago in most of the assaults were told happened to service members seventeen to twenty four usually at the hands of a friend or acquaintance in the majority of these assaults occur at a military facility or on board a ship. How does that break down across individuals services? Well, the army saw an eighteen percent increase in two thousand eighteen over two thousand sixteen the navy seven percent increase air force four percent increase, but get this Audie the Marine Corps. The biggest spike twenty three percent increase want to come back to that in a moment. But what our military leaders saying about this? Well, overall, they say they're disheartened they're angry. They have all these training programs going on in more announced today, but it continues to be a problem. One officials said responsibility for eliminating this crime from the military lies with leadership is what they often say no the marines as we have the highest increase in assaults Twenty-three percent and the top marine officer, general, Robert. Miller said in a statement the marines have to come up with more prevention methods. It also must continue he said to foster a culture of dignity and respect. But was there any sense of the reason why the marines would see such a high increase compared to the other services? You know, we don't know for sure, but some are pointing to the fact that the marines have the smallest percentage of women in the fourth roughly nine percent or so and that's about half the number of the other services in there. Also, the only service that separates men and women in boot camp. So I spoke with Marine Lieutenant Colonel k Germano. She ran the female only battalion at Parris island recruit dip, oh, she thinks it's separating men and women is not a good idea in the women recruit. She said are not required to do the same physical tests as the men she said that sends the wrong message. Let's listen. Very easy to humanize women marine and make them the other by saying there is a less value for them because they don't train the same way. They don't earn the title of marine the same way as to know the marines or considering having men and women trained together at bootcamp maybe next year. They did have one co Ed training company this year. It did quite well, the marine say, Tom you've been reporting on this for a long time. What struck you about this report what you know, one thing that jumped out already in the report it said the odds of experiencing sexual assault were higher in units with a prevalence of sexual harassment or gender discrimination or workplace hostility. So they know which unit to having problems, they know, which leaders are having problems. So my question is why are they holding these leaders accountable, either counseling them or getting rid of them? You know, what the Pentagon isn't saying? That's NPR's. Tom Bowman Tom. Thank you. You're welcome. The prospect.

"Point nine FM and AM six thirty Washington's mall, W M A L. Welcome back. We're continuing discussion about the vet centers in Prince George's county, we're talking with Prince George's county council member Sidney Harrison from district nine and his chief of staff, Eric Boman. So councilmen talk to us about what's happening in the county. What are we looking forward to the landing and everything else? That's happening. We were talking earlier about some things happen in that was failure. What's happening in the county as a whole is ever so growing. Okay. There's a lot of vibrancy and goodwill here in Prince, George's county Prince George's county has approximately about nine hundred thousand people that call Prince George's county home and one of the things that I'm so excited about is the educational system impress Georgia's county are public safety sector working alongside with our product safety officials, and our workforce development that is happening here in the prince, George. County with the summer youth enrichment program where they've expanded the ages summer use ages from fourteen to twenty two along with the number of participants last year, we had about three thousand summer use participating and county executive also Brooks is expanding that number to six thousand nice. And that's very exciting about the community partnership there and providing employment for young people here in Prince George's county, but what I'm also very excited about is one of the things we must spotlight is Prince George's county has veterans commission in the mission and the purpose of that commission is to elevate develop and promote new existing programs and services for veterans and their families with them Prince George's county, and it is our vision that Prince George's county offers our veterans quality services and programs to ensure enrichment and enhancement of. Life for our men and women and their families that actually is under the county executive, I'm Brenda, but they serve as Prince George's county as a whole, and they're being champions for our veterans, and, you know, Gloria, I must say I have to say, you know, you live actually in Prince George's county, and you have been a champion for veterans for so many years. And I thank you for what you do. Would you work with our elected officials our community partners to ensure that that veteran voice is heard and that it is present? And I look forward to working with you, and as you educate, and engage and empower me some of the things that our veterans need and where we need to approve upon our legislation and policy. I look forward to you being able to to share that vision with us as well. Because not one person can do it alone. You. You know that Notre to get anything done. It takes a multitude of people coming together as a team as a vision as one voice to get something done and Gloria. I appreciate all that you do in our community. Absolutely. Thank you councilman. Thank you chief of staff. I am really committed. I'm passionate about the mission that I do serve which is making sure that the department of veterans affairs provides quality and safe healthcare to every veteran, and I don't take the mission lightly. I am an army wife my listeners, they know I'm caregiver to my army brother as well. Who lives a tough life with MS and all sorts of colitis, but with good advocacy. He's been able to get the care services that he needs from the department of veterans affairs. So the mission is personal, and it is more than a pleasure to work with you work with the county. As a whole about veterans just experiencing the camaraderie and being with the veterans on a daily basis. It's like instinct gratification, it's not a job. And you know, some people will say ask yourself if you will do your job without a paycheck while I can say I've done that. And didn't get a paycheck, and I still haven't gotten that paycheck. When I first started with the VA, and I'm okay with it. Absolutely, okay. With it though. I know that passion, and it's love for the mission for the veterans respect for the service because you know, they say freedom ain't free. And I do believe that freedom is not free. My husband served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. And I know I did not get back. The same husband that I sent to Iraq. I know that there's a difference there and he lives his life a little bit different after experiencing the theater of combat. You know, he's a little more cognizant of things that are happening around him. And like you were saying about mandarins being aware of crime or wanting to work to help prevent it. Is that keen training that they received as as military personnel? Yes. And we thank. And appreciate your your husband and all the other veterans that have fought and form wars or conflicts, and we definitely respect and appreciate all the. They have done for our country. Absolutely. The sacrifice. Absolutely definitely a selfless sacrifice. You such a self aside very much so very much. So it was very interesting. The conversations we had with the veterans at the center and some of the information they shared about some of these are the veterans like the homelessness and housing, and is something that as a county government. And also the federal government have to definitely be responsive to those needs because they have served and gave so much of themselves. It's only bright that the government continued to offer them support that they truly deserve and the earned the earned that absolutely you're so right councilmen anything you want to add Rapa. Once again, I want to thank all of our veterans for all that they do for country protecting our freedoms caring for our country. A lot of the reasons why we all are where we are. Today is because of our veterans we stand on the shoulders of our veterans, and we cannot take that lightly. And so I say, thank you. I say thank you to everyone has served in every branch of government for all that they've done for our country. And I look forward to being a champion for veterans working as a partner with them to improve housing, affordable housing quality healthcare, making sure that we address the challenges and obstacles of homelessness as well. And making sure that we improve the quality and services in the wraparound services for anything that is needed that they might need. Absolutely. Thank you so much for joining us today. We're gonna take a brief break. But before we go, I do want to say, thank you. Thank you for all you're doing in the community. Thank you for being not just I can remember when you wanna campaign trails, and I'm yelling about veterans. But I thank you for for sticking. "And AM six thirty Washington's mall, W M AL. Welcome back. We're continuing our discussion about the vet centers in Prince George's county, we're talking with Prince George's county council member Sidney Harrison from district nine and his chief of staff, Eric Boman. So councilman talk to us about what's happening in the county. What are we looking forward to the landing and everything else? That's happening. We were talking earlier about some things happen in that was failure. What's happening in the county as a whole is ever so growing. Okay. There's a lot of vibrancy and goodwill here in Prince, George's county Prince George's county has approximately about nine hundred thousand people that call Prince George's county home and one of the things that I'm so excited about is the educational system. Impress Georges county are public safety sector working alongside with our public safety officials, and our workforce development that is happening here in the prince, George. County with the summer youth enrichment program where they've expanded the ages summer use ages from fourteen to twenty two along with the number of participants last year, we had about three thousand summer use participating county executive also Brooks is expanding that number to six thousand nice. And that's very exciting about the community partnership there and providing employment for young people here in Prince George's county, but what I'm also very excited about is one of the things we must spotlight is Prince George's county has a veterans commission in the mission and the purpose of that commission is to elevate develop and promote new existing programs and services for veterans and their families with them. Prince George's county. And it is our vision that Prince George's county offers our veterans quality services and programs to ensure enrichment and enhancement of life for our men and women and their families that actually is under the county executive on knbr Ella, but they serve as Prince George's county as a whole, and they're being champions for veterans, and Gloria I must say I have to say, you know, you live actually in Prince George's county, and you have been a champion for veterans for so many years. And I thank you for what you do where you work with our elected officials our community partners to ensure that that veteran voice is heard and that is present. And I look forward to working with you, and as you educate, and engage and empower me some of the things that are veterans need and where we need to approve upon our legislation. And policy. I look forward to you being able to to share that vision with us as well. Because not one person can do it alone. You know that Notre to get anything done. It takes a multitude of people coming together as a team as a vision as one voice to get something done and glory. He's been able to get the care and the services that he needs from the department. Teran's affairs. So the mission is personal, and it is more than a pleasure to work with you to work with the county as a whole about veterans just experiencing the camaraderie and being with the veterans on a daily basis. It's like instinct gratification, it's not a job. And you know, some people will say ask yourself if you will do your job without a paycheck. Well, I can say I've done that. And didn't get a paycheck, and I still haven't gotten that paycheck. When I first started with the VA, and I'm okay with it. Absolutely, okay. With it though. I know that it's passion. And it's love for the mission for the veterans respect for the service because you know, they say freedom ain't free. And I do believe that freedom is not free. I my husband served two tours in Iraq one two and Afghanistan. And I know I did not get back. The same husband that I sent to Iraq. I know that there's a difference there and he lives his life a little bit different after experiencing theater of combat. You know, he's a little more cognizant of things that are happening around him. And like you were saying Eric about mandarins being aware of crime or wanting to work to help prevent it. Is that keen training that they received as military personnel? Yes. And we thank. And appreciate your your husband, all the other veterans that have foreign and foreign wars or conflicts, and we we definitely respect and appreciate all the. They have done for our country. Absolutely the sacrifice. I absolutely definitely a selfless sacrifice. You such a self aside very much so very much. So it was very interesting conversations we had with the veterans at the center and some of the information shared about some of these other veterans like the homelessness and housing, and is something that as a county government. And also the federal government have to definitely be responsive to those needs because they have served gave so much of themselves. It's only bright that the government continued offer them support that they truly deserve and the earned. They are in that. Absolutely. You're so right councilman anything you want to add Rapa once again, I want to thank all of our veterans for all that they do for country protecting our freedoms caring for our country. A lot of the reasons why we all are where we are today is because of our veterans we stand on the shoulders of our veterans, and we cannot take that lightly. And so I say, thank you. I say thank you to everyone who has served in every branch of government for all that they've done for our country. We're going to take a brief break. But before we go, I do want to say, thank you. Thank you for all you're doing in the community. Thank you for being not just I can remember when you want to campaign trails, and I'm. Yelling about veterans. But I thank you for floor sticking to your word for digging in with us in getting into this veteran community. There are neighbors..
