Houston spared from Hurricane Laura

"In the end hurricane. Laura, was even stronger than expected and landed even a little further east that meant good fortune for Houston less of an impact for Beaumont and bad news for communities in western Louisiana from Lake Charles to Cameron parish were Laura Landfall after midnight at one hundred, fifty miles per hour this hour will do what we can. To assess Laura's impact on Texas communities to our south and east as it has occurred if it has occurred, will also try to get a sense of how we can help likely more devastated communities across the border into Louisiana I. Let's walk through what we know about what happened overnight, and where we stand this morning news eighty, eight, Seventy Robinson is here with the very latest good morning. Good morning, Craig. That's right following multiple days of officials calling on residents to take this storm seriously, Houston for the most part was spared by Hurricane Laura hit landfall like you said, overnight just before a. m. as a cat four near cat five hurricane or Cameron Louisiana as thirty miles southeast of orange. Texas Governor Greg Abbott Craig made an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America just a few moments ago and said that about five to ten thousand coastal area residents evacuated from the storm and so far. There are no reports of fatalities. Lives may have been sade as a result of those who fled from areas in port author, Beaumont in Orange Texas and really Craig. Most of East Texas was largely spared from severe impacts of Laura as Port Authors Mayor Thurman Bardy spoke to NPR's morning edition and said that there had been minimal damage and was thankful for how the City Fared as port author. If you recall was one of the first cities in Texas to order evacuations ahead of the storm, of course, there'd been concerns of how evacuations would potentially be complicated by the corona virus pandemic. The mayor said that he felt. Pretty good about the decision to issue mandatory leaves. Emergency managers have accu is practice social distancing many wore masks evacuation buses had wipes and disinfectant on hand and hotel rooms were used across the state instead of large shelters. Now, closer to Houston Galveston county officials are saying it's safe to return to the area except for Bolivar Peninsula state. Highway Eighty seven, one, twenty four are still being cleared of of debris by Tex-. He has not rested in peace. He had been exhumed. Well, he doesn't die in Venezuela. His exile to Columbia. So it takes quite some time to bring his bones back to Venezuela. They're brought back in they're put in a tomb with other family bones in one thousand nine hundred eighty five when there's a democratic inter Agawam Imbeni Suada, the government convenes a committee to determine the the bones of boulevard into actually unearthed, the casket open it and examine it and there's actually a convocation sent to the other Bolivian republics of Latin America, the tell them this is happening. And then as mentioned in the introduction in two thousand ten shabas. Did it to China has argued that it was an effort to develop a more realistic image of believer by digital imaging? And also, the determinate believe it had been poisoned because there was always this mythology. They believe what had been poisoned by his enemies in the end after the casket had been. Opened and the imaging done. What emerged was a much swore? The're image of believer that then was used to adorn government buildings throughout Venezuela. It's interesting because for many in the poor sectors of while the elites and others may have been mocking the opening of the casket others, actually. And I saw them cry. It was the first time they had seen in human form. The remains of alleviate the liberator the Venezuelan author Alberto Barrera wrote a column in the New York Times in Spanish. Observing that far from unified Venezuela. The cult as he phrased it of Simone bolivar now is tearing the country apart is he more divisive at this point than unifying. It's interesting. You would raise that I would have said for the opposition. He is a divisive because of the China's appropriation of believer. And in fact, that article by recites several historians have written essays as to why they are not boulevard. Except that now with one way though, we have him using the symbol of believer on the constitution that he swore his self-proclaimed presidency. What is he attempting to do? I don't think that appeals the same way to the middle class and upper classes who who may have supported him was he making an effort to reach other classes is unclear at this point. But it's obvious that he was making use of that symbol in the past. Believer would have been seen as appropriate by the visas and not promoted when the national assembly is taken by the opposition in two thousand fifteen in the air inaugurated in two thousand sixteen one of the first things they do is take down the images of Charleston a believer. So that they were trying to quote unquote cleanse the space of these previous influences, I have one final question for you. What would you do? How would you mediate this situation where two men into factions are claiming the presidency? I would start by going to the meeting on February seventh that Mexico and have convened in Montevideo because the only solution here is the find some level of negotiated. Mediated solution the real issue here is the social fabric in Venezuela. No matter who is in power, whether it's the opposition. And it's many factions or whether it's the Chevy does. And there are many factions because the reality is unless there's some kind of consensus on what is going to happen next, and how both sides respect the political decision. That is made the realities will be back to square one tomorrow, and it will repeat and repeat because neither the visas nor the opposition are going away. Miguel. Many. Thanks. Thank you. "We have a blockbuster special on Saturday. We got a little more time. So we can do a little teaching, and we can talk about some of the things that are really important to quality of life today. We're gonna talk about the gallbladder, and of course in Chinese medicine. The gallbladder is when you are having any issues with the gallbladder, you're called the angry person. It makes you earn a bowl, and it's not a lot of fun. So we really want to understand how to support and promote the very best health for the gallbladder. And it really has a lot of jobs. First of all, it's meant to hold bile, which the liver produces which contains waste products and toxins that delivers taken out of your food. And this is really really a big deal. Many of you may not even notice some of the earliest symptoms that the gallbladder needs some cleansing and tuneup like burping belt. "But it could bring your company down what risks companies facing to their intangible assets. And that's what companies are more worried about, right? This sort of black swan offense, the types of things that they can't control southernly, bringing their reputation and as hits a roadblock in New York. How can cities tackle traffic and pollution now attorney plan might be to do congestion pricing. Basically, the idea would be to charge drivers more money when they want to use roads during peak hours. I, though to Venezuela where President Nicolas Maduro has resorted to desperate measures to try to tackle hyperinflation. He's shopped five zeros off the currency issued new notes, the sovereign bolivar and uncondemned to the petro a state run crypto currency. The International Monetary Fund has predicted inflation in Venezuela could reach one million percent this year and columnists have warned that the new measures could exacerbate an economic crisis, which is already making life incredibly hard for millions of Venezuelans. Many of whom are going hungry awfully in the country. Stephen Gibbs joins us on the line from Caracas press. You could start by telling us a little bit about the situation. Now the banks are closed for one day, but that back and reopened. How has the introduction of this new currency gone? As far as you can tell. Well, in terms of the sudden logistics of it, it seems to have worked every Bank account every million body vase of the old type where in a Bank account with turned into ten, and I can tell you from my experience that were my Bank account, went offline for six hours when it came back online, there was a balance minus the five zeros. I also actually managed to do some shopping yesterday even though it was a Bank holiday, a few shops were open and they were taking this new money under coastal. The prices will so reduced marauding the five zero s from all the prices. It's freed up a huge problem that had existed here, which was the numbers have coming completely unmanageable. It was millions of bolivars to do anything on one issue of that because this is hyperinflation in the digital age was things like we were constantly hitting. On limits on both debit and credit cards, which meant to me basic purchases. You'd have to run your card through four or five times that caused huge queues. Things supermarkets will yesterday that was gone. The limit is not being hit, which makes everything much more practical. But let's see. How is the old currency still legal tender can use to use it? Yes, that's an additional confusion. The Midori government has repeatedly had a problem in printing enough cash most of which actually at buys from supplies abroad. So it's it's failing to to the completely replace the old currency with a new one. So the to run in parallel unless incredibly confusing because both the notes from the old type of the new type look, extremely similar. In fact, the new one does need mentioned that it's a sovereign bolivar as opposed to strong boulevard the name of the the old one. Now, Mr.. Jura dangles this as as a solution to Venezuela's ills. And the million boulevard question is whether it is going to enable the economy to regain stability. What's your sense of this very early stage about whether this helps Venezuela? I think the knocking the five zeros really makes any difference just it just makes the some simpler in the weeks ahead, but will it stop hyperinflation that seems absolutely no reason why would do that. Neither will most of the announcement the president Natori made in parallel to this conversion of the money, including that he's raising the minimum salary by a factor of almost thirty five times. Clearly inflationary measure. One is necessary in a way because people are currently earning. Absolutely. Pitiful. Some said there is a problem there, but it doesn't really. So of course, the fundamental problem which is this is a country. That has been printing money at a unbelievable really right for the last five years or so in that has a separated in the last few months. Now, on the other side of the balance sheet, mature government is doing some things or at least promising to do some things which ought to help the finances..

Venezuela's inflation to reach 1 million percent, IMF forecasts

"We've been hearing for some time about the economic collapse in Venezuela one way. To measure that is by calculating how fast consumer prices are rising and today the International Monetary Fund, made this prediction expects, inflation in Venezuela to reach a million percent sometime this year also. Today the Venezuelan government issued new banknotes. The authorities are in effect hoping to counter inflation by just taking five zeros off the national currency the. Bolivar maybe colleague Leonardo Russia says this economic meltdown has been. Years in the making he's been coming for for many years it came with the collapse of the Venezuelan economy with president will go Chavis, and collapse in oil prices so he had a combination of Venezuela depending heavily on oil prices in a government is a socialist government Which tried, to control prices and, all that created a lot of economic instability and political dissent for. At least four years with street protests. And dozens of people killed in that also pushed the government into into a different note so presently colossoma. Doodoo has been facing a rising inflation and the situation did. Really deteriorated over the past year or so These new notes have read it's called the sovereign Bulevar. And that it's pegged to a crypto currency called the petro which was recently created by the Madero, government and that the value of that. Is based on Venezuela's oil reserves what is what is this, new currency. It is complicated crypto currencies and, virtual currencies are very complicated to explain but in a way it works like a, like a gold standard he pegged the value of, this currency to a certain amount of all your barrels within. As well has also golden diamond in a way it's to try to. Give any new currency in the economy some credibility some tokens were issued of that and people were encouraged to buy that as investment and death is what you know the value of. The new currency will be too but the new sovereign delivers that is replacing the strangely. Name strong believers will be new notes with five zero. Is being cut off they were supposed to come into force in In April or may. But apparently the bills are. Being made in England by Delarue and they they had trouble to pay for that and rearrange and that was delayed and delayed at the time they were going to knock off three years of the. Currency in April in the inflation is? So high that. They decided, to go for five zeros so whatever was, a thousand delivers becomes one cent it's really difficult to understand for. People who live in in a stable economy when will the new notes be available they will be, available tomorrow in theory the the new. Currency is valid zone today but on Monday it was a, Bank holiday. So that people would prepare and, what we saw in Caracas and all the seats people queuing up for petrol prices, have been going up by a lot since last, week since that was announced and people haven't been able actually. To to take out the new currency's anything below a thousand believers won't. Be currency anymore because that's less than one

"Simone bolivar. No less will. Earlier today, monocle done. You'll Bates was joined by an Italian Sobel via Perea, who is a professor of Latin American history at the university of Kent to get more on the story. That was a metal that Zimmerman leave. I gave to Bolivia after the creation of the country eighteen twenty six, so as very precious and invaluable emeralds, gold and diamonds. So you say in valuable metal there, why was this in a rucksack in the back of a car in the first place, then it's normally Bank fold. That's right. And that's. That's a great question. So these this rebellion was supposed to be used in the city coach Obama. So a member of the armed forces was tasked with taking it personally and he missed his flight, and he had to make time between the miss flight and the flight was actually going to take. So he decided to take a stroll into town in his own personal car and go to an area well known for its Brussels. And from there he covered the rook suck. He says with a something yet is car. And when he came out of the second brothel, it was missing and had gone well, not after he came out of the first brothel then assume everything is okay. Any repercussions for this? Well, the thing was the most interesting thing than there was a huge manhunt because you know, these are very, very valuable says they cannot really be replaced more because of the value of the fact that they are the originals. So there was a radio. This was on radio. It was on the news. And the people who stole the rook suck decided to give it back. They left it on the in the church and they called the police and they said that it was there and it was found. This is such an interesting story understand that. You know there was quite the panic and enraged. A lot of people that that that these items were taken and as you say, they were returned because of that perhaps, but was it strange for the president to appear without the regalia he looked rather bland and his tunic yesterday, top of tank was no, right? Yes. But also, I think that the the rage was because of the symbolic value these the these artifacts and anything else, and now that they've been returned, what has the president said, if anything at all? He hasn't really commented much, but of course what this is shown as a huge blunder. I mean, what kind of police officer or sorry, he was a member of the armed forces which just simply leave it in a rook sack in an apart- car. It wasn't even a car that had any kind of security, and there was completely irresponsible. It just kind of shows that there is no proper care of these things. But was Natalia sober via Pereira from the university of Kent. She was speaking to monocle Daniel Bauge earlier you'll listening to the daily here are some of the other stories we're following today. At least twenty nine children have been killed and thirty injured in an asteroid on a bus in Diane in Yemen. The international committee of the Red Cross said the bus was struck by missile launched from aircraft belonging to the Saudi led coalition, which has for some years being waging debatably productive will in Yemen against who he rebelled box by Iran, at least ten thousand people. Mostly civilians have been killed in Yemen since fighting began in two thousand fifteen. Tina's Senate has rejected a Bill which would have legalized abortion in the first fourteen weeks of pregnancy at present and for the immediate future, at least abortion is a legal in Argentina, except in the event of rape or threat to the health of the mother. The Senate voted thirty eight thirty one against we two extensions and one absenteeism. After an often rancorous sixteen hour debate, it may not be the end of the argument. Legislation can be resubmitted next year. And a woman in the Slovakian town of stove has been arrested off to local police. Finally heated. The complaints. Her neighbors who had somewhat wearied of habit of playing one aria from these latro viata over and over again at deafening volume from dawn to dusk. A ritual she bit apparently began to drown out to barking dog sixteen years ago, and they often maintained the experience of being made to listen terminally to the same stretch of anodyne, classical music while fighting off a sinking failing that nothing will ever change..

"We'll get a current update on what the black market rate of one dollar one us dollar in venezuela is something we've been following for years here on free talk live president nicolas maduro late thursday last week briefly outlined his monetary rescue plan yes that's right the same man who absolutely presided over the devaluation of the currency has come up with a plan to save everybody it looks like two hundred thirty five thousand four hundred seventeen boulevard days to a dollar that's the black market rate the official rate is ten to one ten bolivar stood also us dollar and so the real rate of course is the one that's closest to two hundred and thirty thousand boulevard in a country where a dozen eggs can cost hundreds of thousands of boulevards amid worsening inflation he would chopped three zeros off the currency arguably bringing the price for those eggs down to two hundred and fifty boulevards i ask you you for all your prayers and support for the success of the monetary reconversion he said in a televised event thursday night well that's because you're gonna need prayers because this is not a an economically sound policy and really the only question is once they lob off the three zeros is how long it will take for them to get right back to where they are because it did take him a decade a decade dozen years or something like that from the last time they did this it was sometime in the arts i think it was where they again devalued the currency by creating these so called strong boulevard and now they're running through the same playbook yet again but the inflation is much worse there.
