Hayes leads Pistons to overtime victory over Mavericks

"Killian Hayes scored 8 of his 22 points in overtime as the pistons got past the Mavericks. One 31 one 25. The game was tied until Hayes hit back to back threes, putting Detroit ahead by 6 with 41.6 seconds remaining. It feels good to finally go on the side where, you know, things start working for you, but you just gotta keep working. I put in a lot of work. I got the trust from coach, all my teammates pulled, they always pushing me every day. The long buckets came after the pistons blew a one 13 one O four lead late in the fourth quarter. Boy and Bogdanovich led the pistons with 30 points and Marvin Bagley the third added 19 with 13 rebounds. I'm Dave ferry.

"Out new ways to think and create. Listen now. Let's get back to Terry's 1983 interview with Peter Bogdanovich. The film director author and movie critic died last week at age 82. When he spoke with Terry, he had just directed the film they all laughed. And they all left, there's a lot of physical comedy, for instance, John Ritter is sitting in a hotel and he's supposed to be not noticeable, but he's actually very nervous because he's watching someone who is suddenly gotten this crush on. And he picks up a beverage and the struggle goes right into his nose. And he is in a roller skating rink and falls at just the wrong moment. That's planned out, isn't it? Oh, sure, those are. Those are physical jokes. And how do you as the director go over that with someone do? How do you work until it gets right? Well, a joke like the swizzle stick going up the nose is something that, you know, it looks easy, but it isn't that easy to get it to go up the nose so that it doesn't look like it was planned. And when you have as good an actor as John Ritter is and he's nobody better at comedy than John. And the television stuff that he does is not an example of his best work. I put him in pictures in Nickelodeon was his first picture. We worked the stuff together. You know, John is wonderful. He didn't even know how to roller skate. I said, well, you have to learn to roll us a gate so you can fall down, you know. And he did and he just moves brilliantly. So you work with him and he tell him kind of what you want to do and he does. I tell you, I always thought directing also was showing the actors what to do, showing them literally. In other words, if they acting it out for them, they looked into this and then you do this. I found that most directors don't do that. I asked Jimmy cagney one time one time I met him. I said, who are the best directors you worked for? And he said, he said, I've worked with about 80 directors, but of those 80 directors, I would say that there were only 5 that were directors. And I said, well, what do you say makes a director? He said, a director to me is a fella who, if I don't know what the hell to do, he can get up and show me. So I've always gotten up and showed. Showed the actors. And generally speaking, it helps. Lubitz I found out who's probably my favorite director, certainly one of my 5 favorite directors. Directed everybody by getting up and showing them what to do. I mean, whether it was a cars girl or a maid or a butler or a king, he'd acted out. As Jack Benny once did a picture with luba, I said, what was it like working with a little bit? I mean, what did he do? He says, well, he says he'd act out the whole thing for you. I said, was he any good? He's always a little broad, but you got the idea. Do any actors dislike it when you do it for them? The way some actors really hated if you give them a line reading. Some actors do, but I've only had one actor that ever gave me any trouble about it. And it was one of the worst performances I've had. But he finally did what I asked him to, because. To me, a movie has similarities not only to painting but to music. And I've often said it's a little bit like visual music. And often the way a line should sound is, you know, I hear it in my head. And then often it's a question of communicating to the actor how I hear it, because if he says it differently, it doesn't sound right. Now sometimes they'll say it the way I didn't hear it, and that's one of those things I call an accident because it's better than what I had in mind. I don't try to force it force it on the act. I like to let the act of feel like he's kind of doing it. So I don't see him do it. I don't say get up and say, do it just like this. I say something like this. This is the idea. But, you know, sometimes an intonation. Or the rhythm of the speech in a scene is what's funny. Are there scenes and what's up Doc, for example, that aren't all that funny in the way that if you read it. But when you see it play and you hear it, it sounds funny. If you analyze it in that funny, it's the sound of it, the rhythm is funny. That's true in comedy. You are very successful at a pretty young age and had several successes and then some box office failures and no, you're kind of trying to have a more independent operation. A terrible tragedy strike your life. Have you redefined success for yourself? That's a good question, but it gives me pause. It's like somebody once said I must have notice of that question. It's okay. You've got 5 seconds to think. Thank you. I think success is a very ambiguous word. I don't know quite how to answer your question. Let me put it this way. Although they all laughed, has not been a success at the box office because like ET, for example, or Star Wars. I think it's a success for me. It succeeded in what I wanted it to do as a movie. It failed to reach as big an audience as I would have liked. But the thing about a movie that's good, I think, is that it doesn't go away. It stays there. A Citizen Kane was a flop when it came out too, and now everybody says it's the best American movie ever made. So movies, if there are any good have a certain life. Peter Bogdanovich, speaking to Terry gross in 1983. In 2020, Bogdanovich was the subject of the inaugural, the plot sickens podcast from Turner classic movies. It was titled I'm still Peter Bogdanovich. The film director author and movie critic died last week at age 82. Coming up, I review a new CNN documentary series about Marilyn Monroe. This is fresh air. This is fresh air. I'm TV critic David being cooly. This weekend, CNN premieres a new four part documentary called reframed Marilyn Monroe. The first two hours were televised back to back on Sunday and the remaining two were shown next Sunday. One reason to revisit the story of one of the cinema's most iconic examined and enduring sex symbols is that 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of her death. But the more compelling justification is that this new documentary series, from CNN in a British TV production company, takes a very different and original approach to its subject. It's called reframed for a very good reason. During her career and for decades after her death, Marilyn Monroe was objectified, scrutinized and judged, mostly by male writers biographers and historians. Think of Norman mailers ski V 1973 biography, a sexist essay accompanying pictures of the actress taken by photographer Lawrence schiller. Schiller is heard from in reframed, but here he's talking about Marilyn Monroe's acute awareness of the camera. How she posed, what images she selected, and how she used them to enhance and leverage her own celebrity status. But most of the time, the voices we hear in this new documentary are female. Actress Jessica Chastain narrates and an all female editorial team headed by Sam starbuck, reexamines Maryland's movies, marriages, and career moves from her point of view. We hear from female film critics and historians, including the always informative Alicia Malone from Turner classic movies. And we hear from several actresses. Some younger ones who find Maryland inspirational offscreen as well as on, and some of her peers who competed in the same sexist studio system as Maryland did in the 1950s. As in this clip, where we hear from Joan Collins, then Ellen burston, about how women were treated in Hollywood back then. I didn't really feel specifically like a commodity at the time. It's only on looking back that I see that when I was referred to as the girl, put the light on the girl, move the girl to the left. It's only when I look back on it now that I see.

What are you doing the rest of your life north and south and east and west of your life I have only one request of your life that you spend it all with me. All the seasons and the time of your day is all the nickels and the dimes of your day is let the reasons and the rise of your day is all beginning in with me. "I'll just say, if you're somehow out there and you have some point DA blind spots and you have yet to see in the heat of the night. That's where you got to start. It is a movie I adore. And those performances by poitiers and Rod Steiger are just two of my favorite screen performances. I think that movie is that good. And I definitely would encourage everyone to see it if you haven't had the pleasure in the 90s, poitier had memorable performances in sneakers as you said Josh and also in the jackal with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. He was a director, of course, too. He made the 1972 western buck in the preacher. And I did know this, but had forgotten it. A movie I watched a million times as a kid, stir crazy, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. 48 directed that film as well. And he was awarded an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar in 2002. I saw over the weekend after his passing, some of the tributes coming out on social media. And someone posted the clip from Denzel Washington's acceptance speech of his Oscar. And it was at that Oscar ceremony and he kind of joked that his whole life he's been chasing Sydney and then the night he finally gets at Oscar. He gets one too. And Denzel actually had a great line, which was there isn't anything he'd rather do than chase him. Very eloquently said, turning to Peter Bogdanovich. He actually worked with potier once, at least once directed him in 1990 6s to sir with love SQL to sir with love, too. I love that. I love that that movie exists with that title. Somehow completely oblivious to it, but they don't go with anything. Catchy Josh, it's just to serve with a love too. Truth and advertising. Bogged down a bit, of course, probably always first you think of his 1971 masterpiece the last picture show that earned him both writing and directing Oscar nominations. The two films that followed picture show 1970 twos what's up Doc with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. That's never going to get old. Every time she's ever mentioned now on the show, aren't you? I am. 1970 threes paper moon was another Bogdanovich film with O'Neill and his daughter. Tatum. And those were both critical and box office successes, Adam, more confession time of that group, just the last picture show for me. The only way I've seen I haven't seen what's up Doc, but I adore paper moon and it was really because of Orion Johnson and his affection for that film and how it was an influence. I believe on the brothers bloom, that is what compelled me to see paper moon. I think we even did a top 5 heist movies or movies about con men. Maybe that is what it was on the show. And I made sure to do my homework and watched paper moon. It really is great. And then we go back to the 80s and you talk about nostalgia. He made mask in 85. I actually really did love that film with share and Eric Stoltz. Noises off is very good the 1992 film adaptation of the stage farce. I've also seen the documentary about Tom Petty that he did run down a dream from 2007. I have not seen though his final film, which was the 2018 Buster Keaton Doc, the great buster a celebration. We will just say for now that there may be a reason for both of us to check out movie out indeed this year. He also, of course, had a long association with Orson Welles. He was a big reason why wells final unfinished film the other side of the wind finally did see the light of day in 2018. If you have a favorite Bogdanovich film or Sidney Poitier film, you can let us know. Feedback at film spotting dot net. Some news here as we cross over into a new year, we are saying goodbye to our beloved cat, we're looking for a new PA when we hired the great cat Sullivan. We told her that it was going to be a one year sentence. I mean, assignment. And here we are over two years later. And we just kind of didn't say anything. It just hoped she would keep doing the things we asked. And she nicely did. Not notice that the calendar year just kept passing. Exactly. And it's not like these have been easy years either. I mean, exactly has been with us by our side. Didn't she start in the before times? I mean, for sure. We were able to write events and go out and eat with her afterwards and just hang out together back when those things could happen and then yeah, throughout the entire pandemic she's been helping us keep the show going just flexible in having to switch things up, depending on how our schedules change, recording situations change. So yeah, it has been really great to have her by our side for this long, but probably probably time to give her some of her time back. I would say. Yeah, for sure. And you know, she's not getting away from us that easily. We're still going to keep her as part of the film spotting family as long as she'll let us. She's going to participate hopefully in many future trivia spotting events. And we'll just be around from time to time whenever we call on her, but we're going to let her finally be free. Josh, and we are looking for someone to fill those very large shoes. All of the information about what we are looking for in a PA and the skills we need and your form to apply is all available at our website. You just go to film spotting dot net slash jobs..

"They should do that, not for the comics, but just for me, you know? In a room? What if rather than pointing at themselves, you stood in the center and they all pointed at you? I would find that overwhelming. Oh, and Bobby just pointed out Christian Bale. Oh Jesus Christ. Well yeah, some of my Nolan bias coming through there that I said about the most successful Batman. It is a really extraordinary group of people. I'm a fan of all of them. And then they all had to play this rinky dink Hamlet. Anyway, and where weird suits. You know, Amanda, just as we were talking about the Tinder bar, some news came across the transit here that we'd be hugely remiss if we did not mention, which is that the filmmaker, Peter Bogdanovich, one of the most important figures in the new Hollywood, one of my favorite writers and directors has passed away. Sadly, yes, very sorry to hear it. Bogdanovich definitely one of those keyhole figures for me who when I first started seeing his movies and started reading the books that he wrote and some of the books that were written about him, I think turned me on to a lot of movie history from Roger Corman movies to screwball comedies to the great works of John Ford, I would recommend really any of his movies 'cause I think they're all fascinating, but he opens his career with one of the all time incredible runs. He makes a very, very small low budget thriller corm in picture called targets in 1968 follows that up in 1971 with the last picture show, which is one of the most celebrated beloved and greatest movies ever made. Then he makes what's up Doc with Barbara streisand and Ryan O'Neal and just an amazing screwball comedy. And then he makes paper moon delightful period piece about a father and a daughter starring Ryan O'Neal and his daughter, Tatum O'Neal. And then he goes into this fascinating period in the 1970s where he makes this series of flops that have been these objects of fascination and reclamation and calls for concern over the years, Bugatti is not uncomplicated character in movie history. He's somebody who idolized the great men of the 30s, 40s and 50s, particularly figures like John Ford and Orson Welles who became a kind of wells esque figure himself married civil shepherd, left his wife Polly Platt, you know, their relationship famously chronicled in a brilliant season of Korean longworth's podcast two years ago. You must remember this. And bygones is a really long career. He's been really made movies. I mean, his last film was 2014, she's funny that way, and he's been this idol to a new generation of filmmakers. You know, the no bomb box in the Wes andersons and the Quentin tarantinos have spoke quite lovingly about the work that Bogdanovich has done. And for me, he's also just a person who's like a great historian. You know, he grew a couple of books that were so impactful for me for realizing the connectivity between what the 30s and 40s filmmakers were doing and how it influenced the 50 60 70s 80s and now into today. He's a linchpin figure. I would recommend who the devil made it over any of his books. It's such a good movie about the Raoul walshes of the world, you know, the sort of genre of filmmakers of the 40s who kind of led the way towards auteur filmmaking in the future..

If you have any questions, she'll be here administering mine. I got a big bag of stuff here, Doc. Anyway, let's talk. Suzanne. What does this follow up with K and H Now? I'm going to look it up. But what do you who do we have on right now to answer it. We have go ahead. Are you talking? I don't hear you. Oh, you can You hear me now, Tom John combi with K and H windows. I believe I'm saying his last name right? He went and looked at Al's window for us. Tom now, l said he had a window as I remember, and he was upset because he said the molding was not even I believe, he said. And, um or it was like the wrong kind of molding Tom or something We did not really know. So we asked someone to go Look at it. He was saying there was something wrong with his, um, the collars on line three, Tom? Yeah. Is something wrong with this window? Al, I remember the call and you were saying something about molding right? It was a picture. Wasn't it? A fix? Slight window. Uh, it was a picture window as we call them, right? Right? And you said you paid extra for molding, and I believe you mean a trim piece? And the outside molding broke. You said they botched it up, right? Right. You're right. Okay, good. Now K and H went to look at it Now I want to make this clear cane. H was not on this job. We use K and H home solutions for our experts because they do such an excellent job. Of course, it's company. Yeah, they're great. And so we're going to have John. Come on, John. Convoy was our convoy was with his with K and H and he went out to look at the job. Hey, John, What did you find? Hey, Tom. What I found I went out there last week was a insulated glass use. We call it It's just glass only set directly into the brick opening and there's tile on the inside. So what they have is a piece of glass set in there. With a little bit of molding on the outside and some caulking on the inside. There's not really any stop along the phone of business. Start to call you back. Keep going. I'm sorry. Keep keep going, John. He was sure. So, Yeah, you usually for a unit like this. You would want it in a frame unit. Now it's an arch piece of glass. So I'm imagining that most likely they couldn't get Framed piece of glass made that size. Probably. So they did just a glass unit. But they need some kind of, uh, Would stop or like wood frame on the inside to hold the glass. And they wait. You mean they put it in without any kind of frame? Right on the inside. It's just right up against the tile and the brick on the existing opening and then on the bottom, it's set. It looks like directly down to the brick, and that's weird. So what does it have to be removed and replaced to be done properly? I would. If it was something we were getting involved. It would basically start over, you know? Oh, my God. Maybe a little smaller, little smaller piece of glass and then have it. You know, it's definitely custom. You need some kind of custom wood made to the arch on the inside. So what did they replace? Something that had been there before al did they replace something that was there before? Know what they did is they saved the own true Mia. But what was there before they put them? What did what was there before They put this glass in? There was a tramp. You call there was a I am on the outside. No, But what kind of glass was there? Did you have the glass redone? I bought a whole new window about a whole new Why Because they wonder that was in. There was a two pane window with all gun and one of the paint slip. Okay. Awesome songs that new window al is that new window the same shape as the old one. Yes, they came out measured. Okay, Everything's now. Did the old window have wood frame around it? No..

"This may not shock you all that much. But according to mike roberts who covers the sports gambling industry now works sportsline. Lives here in las vegas. He is reporting that nick. Bogdanovich is out at william hill. Just a week before the start of the college football season. Nick bogdanovich william hill's director of trading for years. Since i've been here in vegas nick. Bogdanovich has been a big name in the sports gambling industry in the sports gambling world. Nick has been on this program. Numerous times. And mike roberts is saying nick has confirmed the unfortunate truth that he has been. Let go by william hill a week before the football season. Now if you remember. Caesar's acquired william hill in. There was some thought that there was going to be changes at the top and there would be something some pretty big changes coming to william hill. But i think everyone is still pretty stunned here in vegas. Nick is a really good guy. And a guy who's been around the industry for a super long time. And i mean i'm guessing he will get picked up pretty quickly by somebody here in vegas or somebody in maybe a market. That's you know coming online and somebody want someone who's extremely experienced has been around the sports gaming in shape for a really long time. But i got that via text. And then mica roberts is tweet. Came out the nick. Bogdanovich is out at william hill. Caesar's that is a stunner for a lot of us. Here in the industry have been here and been around nick for a long time if no nick for a long time. So that stinks. that's the industry. This business is really brutal right now. And i think everybody who is working in sports gambling we know that.

"Cash and playoff run to his thing and i know he's not playing a lot right now in his series. And maybe that is over at this point of his career. But lou williams was first off gonna retire when he got traded back. I probably not gonna a championship now. So maybe i'll just hanging up. And he was talked out of that so he sticks around but then try and figure or think about that game last night. And i know you'll love this with rondo starting instead of just completely different because like task through their of any guy to replace trae young louis pretty good facsimile like he's he's obviously not even close to trails level but what he does out there. Things are going to change that much whereas rondo. It's it's completely different. It's wild you're hetero. Rondo can't shoot the way the economy and lose basely won the sixth man award because he comes off the bench and he can shoot. He can fill it up. You can get into the paint. He's got the floor. Gets the free throw line and his threes and last night. Nate mcmillan really didn't have any other choice. It was like you're starting and you know what you can shoot. If you want. You can get other guys involved. You can do whatever you want. And lou was ready to go and if you look back through the series you know he's head. He struggled a lot actually in this series coming off the bench. Only scored thirteen points in the entire series up until this point last night and last night he goes twenty one points on seven for nine shooting. That was all talk as well. Eight assists in there. And that was the thing like louis. Just ready for that moment. And even go back to the philadelphia series. There was times where he came up and didn't really give them a whole lot. He did in a couple of games but there were other gangs. Many had a nunca in game six against the sixers came out and played live. None none none zero quoting. What do you call it for us. Sounds like a nicer. It's not like it's not like the guy's been lauding it up the entire time plows. He has struggled and he's also fan himself on the bench at times but yeah night basically was like well. What else am i going to do. You know he needed him and he went out there and delivered. And that's the thing i think. He just came out and he was like well. I get to shoot not. I've got the green light and he did that. And not the floor but then it does obviously help when bogdanovich can finally hit some shots kevin that gets into his little mid range gets and even joan collins only had i think four points last night but i thought he was active again. You know making himself useful. So i don't think there was a player on the hawks that wasn't contributing in the minutes. He was on the court they last night. And that's just a great team victory. Given the circumstances that were virtually facing elimination last night. If i lose it's It's gonna be really interesting to see now. What happens in game. Five if trade lies at all because deep bone bruise doesn't sound good. And i think again in the playoffs. You're going to do everything he can to get wrought the fact that he missed the game tells me that's a pretty serious injury so we'll find out but man what a great series. This one has had a douchebag sweep booker reservation at the douchebag restaurant..

"To Bogdanovich picked up by Tobias Harris, trying to get by him now retreats and gives it up to Gallinari spin move to the baseline against Milton. Bumps in with the right shoulder Gets inside, puts it up. Not there, but a whistle from the baseline official will go against Milton and Gallinari will learn himself a pair of free throws. That's an awful big ask of Shake Bilton. I mean, On R E. Major sized Differential there and you give a guy three or four dribbles to back a smaller player in he's probably going to be effective, pretty tough to guard him one on one. Ellen Aree will hit the first of two free throws. Gallinari one of the best Free throw shooters in the NBA. In fact, he's only missed one in the postseason, and he's perfect here in this second round series. It is stunning JB as poorly as the Hawks of play. They have a chance to be only down six here on a made free throw. No, I mean five turnovers from Philly, some sloppy play the bench. Not doing the job like they did in Game three. They had 30 points in the first half. In Game three to this filly bench. They got eight tonight. Culinary. It's both free throws. 32 26 70 Sixers. Milton Baseline, Right dribbles through the basket passes out to the wing, now on top Harris to his right now cuts down the lane back to the basket passed to the top Bible. He'll try a three will miss it. Offensive rebound Howard and a whistle as he's fouled. Where was John Collins? They're trying to defend as Howard behind him, grabbed the offensive rebound. Well, that's what Dwight Howard could do. And he understands that's the way he's going to get most of his offense. It's on the offensive glass. Good board there. You're right Note box out from Collins and Albert went right over the top and snatched it from him and we'll get to the free throw line. A G. Bogdanovich, who was right next to John Collins, will pick up his second foul. Dwight Howard, who is not a good free throw shooters been a really good free throw shooter in this series six of seven. Oh say that Just jinx that one Reminders. Start your day with Keyshawn J. Willens Zubin every week Day morning from 6 to 10 A.m. Eastern, followed by Greenie with Mike Greenberg on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app After missing the first free throw second attempt, Howard spins one through with 8 13 to go in the half. 33 26, Philadelphia, leading all rolling across half court clock now triggered as it's picked up by Lou Williams. Hand off Mike Donovan, at the top passes to the right side to Collins flips it to Trae young floater from 10 rattles home for the first bucket of Game four for Trey Young. Took about 15 minutes before he got on the board after missing his first five shake. Milton Sixers by five floats it up, missed. It rebounded by Lou Williams Williams from right to left to the three point line, crossing to his left and reaching foul as Simmons will get tagged with that one out on the perimeter, and that's going to be the third team foul against Philadelphia. Here in the second quarter. First on Simmons just some questionable shot selection here from Philly. A few silly unforced turnovers and you know you're giving this Hawk team some life down five. They have no business being within five points right here Shooting 25% and two of 11 from three Doc's going to reinsert Joel Embiid to the lineup. So the counter for Nate McMillan, Clint Capela. Is back on the floor. 13 foul so side out of bounds from the near left side for Trae Young in the Hawks, who trailed by 57 40 left in the first half. Trae Young hasn't dribbling through the cappella screen against him. Beat floats it up from eight missed everything loose on the baseline. It's Capello picks it up and hooks at home six offensive rebounds for Atlanta. Fortunately for Philly, it's only cost him four points. But doing a nice job on the offensive glass 33 to 30 Chan of defense inside the state Farm Arena in Atlanta pass on top to Seth Curry. Curry drives on the right hand of the high post behind the back to Embiid will square for three and he will connect with seven minutes to go in the half. Still yet to touch the paint. On the offensive end, and he knocks down his first. Jumper of the day and not just be a 3 36 to 36 hours double their lead training was on the three point line will back up get a screen from Capella he'll drive will float at high thought Capella might go for it was fortunate last touched by a sixer out of bounds. We'll see that what has.
