Juliette modest gains here at the moment, the kospi just up a tenth of one percent. The Nikkei up two tenths of a percent. Asx two hundred of about a quarter of one percent. We did have a very strong performance in tex- shares overnight, and the NASDAQ was up seven tenths of one percent. So that will feed into we see futures higher, for instance, in Hong Kong and China and Taiwan. Like, you said Juliet a day perhaps like yesterday where we had a little bit of mixed performance. Then turned positive as the day wore on, but the miles and miles away comment by Wilbur Ross that didn't help. However, then you had the economic adviser Larry cudlow come out and say, President Trump is optimistic about trade talks. And also that the January jobs report would be up a significant amount oil rose a little bit some instability there in in Venezuela. And at the moment, the oil prices fifty three oh, six of giving back just a little yield on the ten year. Two point seven one percent is very good day for for semiconductor stocks for the most part, although Intel disappointed after the close when we have more time. I'll take you inside until earnings there wasn't too much to cheer about. I can tell you that. All right back to you. Well, Bryan, let's pick it up there Intel. Yes, you're right. The disappointing results after the bear a bell stock was down more than six percent in late New York. Trading numbers on both revenue and profit missed estimates. We spoke earlier with a non trend of arson. He is a senior analyst at Bloomberg intelligence. He covers the chip space for us. Very well, he told us the weakness in Intel's data center business is especially painful, this is going to dramatically impact earnings per share because data center business is is a higher margin relative with the PC business and looks like the challenge is not going to evaporate anytime soon because Intel's revenue forecast for the current quarter is also below estimates companies also more cautious bay. Based on not only a slower economy, but geopolitics as well. Well, Starbucks Hsieh's hiring late trade the coffee chain base. Analysts estimates in K Americas and Asia Pacific regions last quarter. We get more from Bloomberg's Denise Pellegrini. Same store sales rose four percent in the Americas. One percent in China. And this was the second straight quarter of growth after a rare decline in pricing last spring sparked concerns about the region, but scratch the surface and the China results may appear a little less. Impressive. New stores have been cannibalizing business from older locations and even though Cup sales rose transactions fell suggesting it's higher prices that propped up results, they're not the increase in store visits in China that Starbucks was hoping for Denise Pellegrini. Bloomberg daybreak Asia. Brian mentioned trade earlier. That's right. President Trump saying today, it would be great. If the US can make a trade deal with China. However commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, it Chinese economic reforms and intellectual property rights could be the sticking points. These are complicated issues. There's serious issues. Every semi colon. Every comma every everything becomes quite important. So we shall see. What's the outcome? We would like to make a deal and Ross did say that he is expecting to go shatters to release a statement on the progress of those discussions that will happen next week when Chinese vice premier her and US trade rep Robert lighthizer, meet in Washington DC. It really will sign we've tried to negotiate with the administration to no avail when the president's deputies made offers the president almost immediately retracted them, so Bloomberg's mardi Schenker says compromises the only pathway to open the government at this point. And the vote count is significant, but it is a significant signal to Mitch McConnell that Donald Trump's plan is not going to pass with his GOP colleagues now to be fair. There's DACA in that. Yeah. Cisco global news twenty four hours a day on air and talk on Twitter powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg. Doug. All right. Our guest for the half hour is how Hong he is head of research in the chief strategist well at bocom International Holdings, joining us from our studios in Hong Kong. How always a pleasure to have you on the program. I'm curious based on what you're hearing. And what you're reading. Where are we in the in the US, China trade negotiation process, or do you think we're closer to a successful outcome? Well, I think at this moment deanza really uncertain. But having said that though with we do making some progress, you know, the two sides talking, you know, from some indications, and I both sides wanted to make a deal and also in four school last year. The US market crash and also concerns about a dramatic slowdown on the global economy. And also on the US economy is intensifying, so I think with this backdrop, it's actually more conducive for both sides to reach some sort of agreement because both sides realize that is, you know, the tree talks break down. Then then. Hugh. On the global economy. And who who do you think is going to blink first because there's still obviously they like very much concerned about intellectual property holding the US back in terms of wanting to budge. Yeah, I think the Chinese I has softened substantially. If you still remember in the first half of last year when the dispute worsened. The shiny sizes the twos. Some of the principles that it's been in the Chinese propaganda for some time. The McCain China Tony type five. And also some Republican this as well, the now, you know, you if you look through the Chinese press much less why is in various you mentioned about those terms. I think I have heard some sources saying that many of these terms. Now set of self censored in the Chinese press. So. You know with indication as in tiny size softening substantially so away from intellectual property. The other big issue is obviously access to Chinese markets or to the China market in a way that doesn't contain US ownership to majority status that they can actually take a majority stake in a company and remained independent in this gets into the issue of sharing the technology. And I'm wondering whether or not you feel we're making any progress. We had a story earlier in the hour talking about the extent to which China's now probably promising global banks majority ownership of some of the local security ventures. Whether that's happening at a rate that's fast enough for the US to kind of agree to do a deal with China. We can talk more with how Hong head of research and chief strategist bocom international. That's after we update you on markets and global news moments from now, we are on daybreak.

And that he will discuss it with his cabinet and reveal all tomorrow global news twenty four hours a day on Aaron a tick talk on Twitter, powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. Never a dull day these days. This is Bloomberg Bryan, sir. That's why we love our job. We love the news business. Ed. Thanks very much for the update. How Hong is this a head of research and chief strategist at bocom, International Holdings. We've been looking at the Chinese markets and the Chinese economy an economy is a very complicated thing to analyze how when we try to find the root of the Malays in China. You wonder whether it's the leveraging campaign or the trade war both of which are foisted upon Chinese people from kind of like the outside or is it more organic in nature, something like the debt overhang what's causing leveraging campaign that started. Layla? In two thousand eighteen you can see the swing kitchen the shadow banking industry in China has been substantial. So traditionally the Chinese swim has been going on debt, basically when trying to expand his business. The go-to. Lungs the equity market as the findings into he's very well developed. So as a result, you know, the leverage ratio in China tend to be higher in the way people finance that rules tend to be using that. So just imagine. All of a sudden, you know, the shadow banking industry, which has been an important financing tool for many of the SME's. Is trying to being Curto by Kotel by the government. So I think that creates a sort of a substantial funding for many of this Emmys, and as a result, you can see this year. There's a huge divergence between the earnings of the national firms versus the SME's this amuses doing very poorly. How when you look more broadly across the economy in China, you we have started to see a few signs of a little bit more of a slowdown. What was anti had where do you expect to see that weakening coming through in the economy? Is it going to hit some of the I guess, you know, strong property sector valuations that we've seen across some of those Tijuana two CDs. Yeah. I think the property sector has been quite concerning obviously the property variation on the public depot has been so large that is actually hampering the policy choice of the government. So I think you know, right now, we're seeing reputa- celebration of cells into one in two CDs. I think in some of the cities where to see some protests against the developers scientists sending prices. So it is concerning, but then you know in the news of proposal for tax cuts. We're seeing the tax deductibility of mortgage payment for for many people who who has mortgage loans. So I think in a way I see the new sort of tax reduction package as a package to help the developers. And there is the reason why probably develop developers has been one of the better performing groups in the past two days. I guess if you look at the dynamic that you described companies they can't fund their expansion through prophets. So they have to borrow a lot of money. But they they do actually have quite a lot of enthusiasm. I mean, there's there is organic growth in the Chinese economy, people themselves have animal spirits, right? Yes. I will say, you know, the one of the reasons how we get to where we are right now. You know, we actually had the overall index lowest your lower than two thousand sixteen when national team I rescue tried to rescue the market. So we actually lower than that point. Now, you one of the reasons how we get to this situation. Really is that you know in in two thousand sixteen to stay the selling pressure on on the stock market, the sixty. So beat the large stakeholder private firms from sending the shoes. So, you know, not to get money to finance the growth this year holders pledge to too many people get money to finance the growth. So there is the reason why the ship pledge situation is so severe right now to outstanding. Pledge amount is about four trillion on on the official numbers. But if you tell you all the all the related pledges is close to six Chilean. Yeah. All right. Thanks so much for joining us. "Arabia now, we have stop intelligence people in Turkey. We're going to see what we have a lot tomorrow. And he says he's told USA today that he thinks that was a death plot gone awry, meanwhile, Turkey's president air to one is saying that he's talked with the principal leaders connected to the case. And now he will discuss it with his cabinet and reveal all tomorrow. China has called on the US to reconsider pulling out of the arms control deal with Russia. China says it would generate multiple negative effects. China's says that the US exit from the deal would free if the US to deploy new weapons into the Indo Pacific to respond to China's attempt to expand influence in the area. And now CNN is reporting. The president is saying the US will increase its nuclear arsenal. This is President Trump asked whether it's a threat to China. He said to be considered a threat to China as well as Russia. The Brexit transition may now be extended by as much as years and Prime Minister Theresa may says time may be needed to solve the Irish border impasse, which Bloomberg's Emma, Emma. Ross Thomas says is definitely the key here. Trying to get the easy to get on the Irish Tokyo unacceptable to the UK audience, and they'd come up with a proposal that he's basically enrage to action within. Although there don't seem to be enough votes to force her out and buyer AG has failed to persuade a judge set aside, a juries two hundred eighty nine million dollar verdict. This is the first trial over allegations that its roundup weed killer causes cancer global news twenty four hours a day on Aaron and talk on Twitter, powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg. Bryan, sir. Thank you very much. The time is eight minutes now past the hour. Our guest is how Hong head of research and chief strategist over at bocom International Holdings, how it's very interesting to to get views on how concrete the measures are in China. But I think what's even more important is does this indicate a willingness or perhaps less willingness to to compromise with the United States on the trade war? So in other words, it's inward-looking to try to prop up. The economy is that it or does it make it more likely. They also want to cooperate with US. I was as these are measures to prop up the market. I think, you know, the Chinese market is probably one of the few markets in the world that attracts so much regulators. You know, you don't see in the US the SEC constantly monitor the stock market titties intend to talk up this top market public except Trump. So the this automated to rescue the stock market because the stock market is interesting barometer of social sentiment in overall attitude towards reforming open so going into next year. Obviously. The. Footy is in reforming open. So I. This is a meaningful for the ruling party. So I think you know, I wouldn't be surprised to see. In the coming weeks. More concrete measure would be rolling out to support the market. We have one of our strategists mockup more saying, you know, we shouldn't be overly surprised by the supporting because similar to what you've seen in many other markets. You know, you had QE in the US. You have the B O J buying shares through ATF's in Japan, and essentially we shouldn't be betting against the house here. So in your view, how much further could we potentially see Chinese markets recover at this point in time after two days of very big gangs who say that, you know, this more like more likely ABM market rebound in we all know that in a bear market, the rebound tend to be shopper. Then. Deep state you can see in the market. So I would say that you know, because the general public is very excited. You know, finally, the government is making a move on the market and also over the last few days, we did see some good measures coming out, you know, trying to sort of rescue and stabilize the market. So I would say that you know, this is a short term low porn four technically speaking for the market does this concerted effort mean that we don't breach seven on the Chinese currency? There remains to be seen. I think if it gets worse from here. You know, one should not.

Well, I think the at the moment the market is finding very difficult to set expectation, obviously, even though ten percent tariff is not unexpected. But there's a twenty five percent tariffs at the Beck. And also, this is threat that if China retaliate, then probably more severe.

"Three was kinda come this way. So I think at this point in time the problem is that it's difficult for the market solution to this. You know, it's just basically to strongman punching at each other not negotiating at all. So I think at the end of the day, I think the things it's gonna get worse before it gets better. But at the same time, it seems to have given a window to US businesses to do adjust their supply chains a little bit. And I'm wondering whether or not that could have a material impact on longer term relations between the two countries that that may not be able to be repaired. Well, I mean, if you look at the trade war between US Japan in the eighties, right? That's region for almost ten years hasn't. That's the reason why I think it's gonna be a long lasting through negotiation process going on. I think for the US companies though, it's a little difficult for them to find a sort of a surprise s cheap and also quality as good those who has expertise in supply ching sophistication areas as very difficult to combine Asian area. So for some of the US companies they may have to relegate back to the US. How briefly what sort of reaction can we expect from China? I would say, unfortunately, you no more terrorists on this side. We have five. You know, fifty billion more to go. I think you know, low Jiwei suggests that China can mystically sexploitation to the US as well. As to see what's going to happen. All right. Bloomberg Paul thanks it let's get back now to Hong hit of research and chief strategist at International Holdings how just want to return to appoint the Brian made there a minute ago talking. About Ten Santana regulatory uncertainty around gaming. Licenses we've been talking about how Bloomberg's blend that the, backdrop. For this is a shakeup in the departments. That approved these licenses the symptomatic of maybe a broader battle for control in the communist party not necessarily low is probably just a change of authority because earlier earlier. This year you see, combination so basically, they merged a few departments that controls TV films. And radio and other press media's altogether into one department so I think you know. This incident, could be a set of a transfer of a sorority, from one department to the other and also by the way you know since the beginning of this year the approval of gaming. License actually had. Been delayed and and. The process. Has been very very slow so you know ten cents incident is not a sort. Of an isolated incident in this case we'll probably see a little bit more selling today Okay is it too early to nibble for some of these technology companies tencent down more than thirty percent already and I, think Alibaba about twenty two percents yeah well the child looks very bearish. Obviously tencent and Alibaba bellwether for Chinese tech sector companies not only because they're taking in terms of. Size and also they bake in terms of putting their own money to work into investing in other tech companies so. Tech companies actually get funding, for the development from this too big Mendez companies so you know I would say that because of. Because of a very special, status of, these two companies in the Chinese, texts that berries trend is actually putting pressure on the valuation on other companies in Texas, well you. Take aside you, know there are other things creating the sea of rain today. The trade war, commodities gold is down are there any Sixers do Look appealing at the? Moment Wow I think you know, at this, point in time you know because the. NBA depreciation pressure is persisting so last night was the offshore Shooting at, six point nine five so we haven't seen that level for for a long time now so because of that and because. Of the the the stocks in in Chinese stock market is denominated in in. Chinese, and also making the, earnings in Chinese Shannon as, well so, the depreciation of the currency actually making. Them Chipper making the SS Chipper For now, so I think that is the one of the reason why is s the yen depreciate further pressure on the Chinese stock. Market and also in the Hong Kong market is is under pressure as well I guess it's very difficult to make a call for a bottom Hang Seng index? Down, about six thousand points yeah twenty seven thousand three. Twenty three, d do you think it's just, a little bit too early, do we need to wait or you think maybe now's the. Time to get in yeah I I think it's very difficult to time it you know because the market is so volatile it's, very difficult to say you know the market Ken bottom ten o'clock tomorrow At? This, time so I I would say that the bottoming. Is range, is a process and also requires, time for the market will, work holiday, uncertainties as, at this point you know Within the market is rapidly approaching Sullivan also level but.
