Goodbye to Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke
"A great journalist died Sunday morning. And I'm sure a lot of you never heard of her. But if you live in out here on the West Coast and working in this business, you would have followed her and hung on her every word like I did. Nikki think was a veteran entertainment journalist who founded deadline back in 2006 and she helped it grow into a major player among the must read Hollywood trade magazines, variety in The Hollywood Reporter. And she died yesterday morning down in Boca Raton, Florida after a long illness she was 68 years old, and just seeing that age scares me 68. That's just 8 years old and I am now. And she's gone. Let me tell you, once you hit 60, there are two ways to act. You can convince yourself you got 25 years left or concede and cover up and wait for death to Shaw but your door. It helps to have someone you love and others you live for that keep you going. But Nikki Fink didn't have either of those things. So her 60s living alone in Florida and hospice care where a lot of east coast people tend to go to die, must have felt like the right time to check out. Nikki was a great writer. No one had the acerbic wit that she had. Her phone calls were feared, and if she ever wrote about you, it was better to put your hands over your face and read it through your fingers. She was one part investigative reporter, one part gossip columnist, although she hated that term and one part judge jury and executioner. She saw right through the Hollywood elite and trust me when I tell you, hers was the first column they read every morning when she ran deadline from a home somewhere in studio city, California. She had hundreds of sources, broke hundreds of stories and scared the daylights out of everyone in this town. Be they a superstar actor, studio executive or production assistant.

So they're learning and growing along the way. We get them what we call recovery jobs, things that are not, you don't have to take your work home with you. For example, you know, in fact, we've had, we've had very high level people in our lodge. Some had to change their name. Because they would be known, but we make everybody play by the same rules. That's one of the good reasons why we're so successful. Is we just don't we just don't entertain that, you know? They really have to want to be clean and sober. Yeah, so regardless of their background or profession or maybe celebrity status, everyone is approached with the same programs, a model. So these are residents. These are people who have finished more or less their rehab treatment program, but are not ready to return to their own home, return to their usual lifestyle, and as you say, it's the bridge. Yes, resuming their normal lives. That's right. A lot of people, the first thing that they ask, excuse me, the first thing that they ask is that do you have someone to stay there overnight? And that really defeats the purpose. You know, they're learning how that we have people there checking for bed checks all the way up until 1 o'clock. And then someone in the house at 7 30. So 6 for 6 hours, yes, they are sleeping in their beds by themselves. And yes, people have tried to sneak out and we have caught them. Okay, so they make a commitment to being there into really living there for X number of months for longer. Yeah. And follow the rules. Most people do not get kicked out for using. They get kicked out for just belligerent just not wanting to follow any rules of any kind. Not able to conform, not able to be a part of, you know, and we have to have repeated attempts, but there are too many people that need help. I mean, our phone is ringing off the hook. Yeah. Yeah, so they really have to be recovery ready. Yeah. Yeah. And if they're not ready, I mean, if they're not ready to make these changes and these are huge changes, I can appreciate that. These are major life changes from one lifestyle to another. So you want people that are really a 100% committed. We had a guy that, you know, he owned a home around the corner and bokeh. Our houses are on the line between that line between Delray and Boca. So literally, I'm on the canal across the canal as Boca Raton. Okay. So

I've lived here. Like i said it's for fifty eight years and it everything's relative. I mean it's I look at some of the homes that i wish i had bought a twenty years ago and i st- i couldn't afford them twenty years ago and i still can't afford of the day but they're worth a lot more money and again everything sort of relative. But you're right though boca offers so many things that i think for any young person. That's trying to build a young family whether it's the parks the outdoors the beach theaters. Like there's so much here if you want to grow grow family of course to universities you've got executive airport sky's the limit for for a small city. We sure do offer quite a bit right well absolutely like you say you talk about the airport. I i used to. I worked at the airport in high school and i. I saw The benefit of having that airport here in terms of economic development of the area. There were definitely ceo's that would fly into boca raton and later moved their companies here because they love living here and they they have access to transportation like the airport and.

I love being home, which is such a great change, but I've just been trying to train as much as I can. just hit with some girls that are in the area, and that's pretty much it. Do. You have a coach right now that you're kind of working with is one of those things that you're slowly getting back into practice mode, or have you already been practicing a lot? Yeah I have I have a coach I work with. He's He's French and he's come down to work with me all the time. and yeah, just slowly getting back into it I played a couple of exhibitions in Atlanta last month I got to kind of. Play in a feel for where I was and be on court again. Play matches so been doing that. Was it wild without any fans and stuff like that. What's restrictions the same as kind of what we're expecting from upcoming tournaments? Yeah. I think probably exactly the same. It was really weird, and it just felt like I was literally playing a practice match. which is what which is what it was was it was? Very Weird. There was a there was one empire, but he was sitting Super Far Away. We couldn't really come that close futuristic on opposite sides. Side did kind of get a feel like what will be in the tournament coming up in. It was definitely a little strange. So one of the things that I've noticed with a few players and is their motivation. Level can kind of go like this enduring the quarantine. It's just been up and down. You know like we've been told two months two months from now two months from now. Yeah, what's your motivation been like for the last couple of months? Yeah well general motivation it is a little bit up and down with the tactic of the tour just in general, but for the past few months. Yeah I! Think the hardest part. was just you know knowing how much I should train like how much I should do if I should? Maybe less because I'll. Then I'll be more fresh when I start playing again or do more than I'll be. You know in super good shape, so it's just finding the balance between that. With no exact Kinda, start date and no calendar it's. Up in the air, so I'm just doing the best I can just like. Everybody is I'm sure? There's been somebody announcements about the tourist coming back in August and the US. Open has gotten some flak because there's not going to be a qualifying event at least as of now in June. Everything is changing by the day, but the initial initial plan is no qualifying. What was your reaction because it's kind of? A grossly unfair. Yeah no I'll just. I'll just speak really freely. I'll say I think it was the total slap in the face to so many players who depend on playing slam and you know that really depend on that. You know the competition and the prize money and you know everybody's been going through this rough time, but I just feel like. Prioritizing. The top players, which of course they deserve to be there. They deserve to play these tournaments but I just feel it was just really a hard low for the players that worked so hard to be in qualities, and they really depend on that time of the year for a lot in their career so I personally think it's it's a little bit unfair, and I think now. I read something where they're allowed to bring. Two or three people with them, so that potentially could have been an entire qualities drought. You would have just cut back by one person each flare so. I'm not obviously I. Don't really agree with it and I. Think definitely a little bit more could have been done for. The lower ranked players. I've also been hearing A few people talk about how qualifiers are still like. If you would have been in qualities, you're actually going to get a check yet. So what? What is what's the amount? Do you know the amount of that check? So I think like the first round qualifying. It's normally maybe ten thousand, five hundred somewhere around that range. But I've also read stuff wear. Maybe if we don't play, they may Give us some of the prize. Money I'm not really sure how it's to be I've been reading the W. T. updates that they email us every week. so I think that's the amount but I'm not really sure about the specific so what they're planning to do. From a personal level I'm curious. How excited are you to go back on tour? Not knowing that you know there's going to be not only changes Day In and day out, but just having the US Open like actually no qualifiers in the French Open I think there will be qualifiers yet. We still don't know really ITF Calendar. How are you excited to go back or part of us? Just like what the heck is happening. I think yeah, it's a little bit mix of both I. I am excited to get back playing, but you know like I said earlier just we have no direction really I don't know. There's no it calendars I. Don't know if I can start with the lower level tournaments and then play French Open they'll be a warm up or I. Don't know what's going to happen, but I think. I think the WPA T. A.. They have been doing a good job. You know trying their best to manage everything, but I think one thing that they've kind of lacked was update in the players.
