Uber gets 18-month London license after winning court appeal

"Quarter uber lost $1.8 billion because of the covert pandemic. I mean, think about it. How often have you called up an uber or a lift? To catch a ride since the pandemic hit. I mean, I know personally, we used these uber and our family quite a bit a couple times a month between the five of us now we probably haven't used it twice. In four or five months. The company is trying Teo, you know, survive and come back and part of that involves expanding and having rideshare all around the world, including London, where Uber was able to get their license back after winning the court challenge and join us on the phone Now to talk about this is Simon Oh, and Fox News correspondent Welcome to the Bobby Smith Show. My morning, Kevin. So sort of walk us through this. What is what has been the history of uber in London? And then where do we stand today? Why's this ruling so important? That is a troubled history. But this is certainly a crucial victory for uber the taxi service that, as you say, spread all over the world in in recent years, But that rapid expansion as bean bumpy at times on DH no less so than here in the British capital on who ended up being stripped of its license to operate here last year. There's bean a Serie of skirmishes with the transport authority before that, on DH Uber was then told last November that that was it. It was being banned for what transport for London said with a pattern of failings, including summit said that puts passengers at risk well. Uber appealed that ruling. Went across it apologize. It was contrite. It accepted there had bean flaws in the past, but it said it had changed, but it has put things right on DH. Now A judge has sided with the company and the magistrate who heard this case. 10 a crime, said that while Uber wass guilty of historic failings, he said, its record Was improving on that he was satisfied that it is now in the words they used fit and proper to hold a license. So whoever is back it is very happy. London today particularly lucrative market it count 3.5 million regular customers here, so those 3.5 million people can continue to use. That the service transport regulator says it will be watching you that very closely. Yes. So you know here in the states, uber had a bumpy start here is well, And the biggest concern, of course, was people safety and there would be a report here and then a report there and and all of a sudden people were very concerned about how safe they were getting in a car with a stranger. But uber seemed to put together quite a lengthy list of Of things that they that they go through to make sure that the rider's air safe the background checks and being able to identify that driver actually is a driver. The biggest problem after they started went through their their safety checks was, you know, making sure customers got in the right car that they were supposed to be getting in more than anything else? I have had They done that in London. Do they have the same safety procedures? Do they? They make sure that they do background checks on all of that on the drivers, and they do checks on the cars. You know, At first, there were there were not Checks on the actual fitness of the automobiles, But they changed that as well. The car's all have to go in and get checked out before somebody can become another driver. Well, I mean, it's certainly change from the kind of it's almost quite loose seeming ride, hailing service that it used to be way you accepted that it was just going to be a stranger, perhaps rolling up in their car, making a few dollars on the side and taking you around now it's very much much more like a taxi company on duty, said that it'd have increased its safety precautions that said that this verdict is a recognition of its commitment to safety and that it will continue to work constructively. With the regulator. But transport for London laid out a series of floors that it that I had identified last year and perhaps the most car racing complaint from the regulator. It's said that there was a florin uber systems that was allowing unauthorized drivers to upload their photos to another drivers accounts essentially borrow the accounts and make some money. For themselves, and so uber had Bean saying, You know, we've got this sorted. We're doing background checks on the drivers. They've overto have accounted their photos on. And then it turned out there was this huge loophole in the system that meant that wasn't really a promise that was worth more than the paper. It was. It was written in because transport for London said that those uninsured rides involving an unauthorized drivers It says that they carried out more than 14,000 rides before uber fixed this floor so pretty kind of damning indictment from the regulator now at the same time Stream, a half million regular customers. That's a lot. That's a significant proportion of London's population. And so I think this is probably quite helpful for the transport regulator and the mayor of London as well because they had officially kicked to browse and got rid of it. Then you would have some Customer to kind of got attached to ever much cheaper than traditional black cabs here. And so this perhaps works for both sides that the Duke said it has tightened up its safety precautions on for the regulator. It's able to keep you were operating and keep happy that the three million Londoners who use it

U.S. Judge Halts Trump's TikTok Ban, Hours Before It Was Set To Start

"Well tiktok lives in US apps stores at least for another day, a federal judge in Washington, sided with the company last night blocking President Trump's order that bans the video sharing app the trump administration. Let's remember caused the APP a national security threat and it's fighting in court to Block Tick Tock Chinese parent company Bite, dance from operating the APP in the US either by banning it outright or forcing a sale to a domestic buyer, we NPR tech reporter Bobby. Allen here morning Bobby Morning David Okay. So what is this court decision? What does it mean? So the judge put the brakes on a ban that was going to. Like you said, prevent any new downloads of Tiktok that was supposed to take effect at midnight Sunday and the judge didn't explained his rationale for the ruling. But TIKTOK lawyers argued in a hearing just over the weekend that shutting it down would be like shutting down a modern version of the town square. They said that's Kintu silencing speech and there sure is a lot of expression on Tiktok David I mean it's the fastest growing in the world. You know it has some hundred million users in the US. So all those users can now breathe a sigh of relief they can keep posting their lips thinking and other ridiculous videos. For now, that since such an important relief for so many people going for these these times of isolation. You Save for now that's important. Right? I mean this. This might not be the final word at all. Net. Yeah, exactly. So this is a breather for Tiktok buys them time before there's a more extensive hearing on trump's ban, and in the note here that the White House is not backing down from that band but as is winds its way through the courts. There's one very important date and that is November twelfth. That's when Tiktok has to find American buyer or disappear for real in the US Tick Tock, was hoping that the judge would also push back that date, but the judge said, no, we're sticking to the November Twelfth Day. When we heard so much about that potential deal was supposed to keep Tiktok live in the US for good. What what's the latest there? Yeah. There was hope at one point you know parties were racing towards an agreement, but then things sort of went south pretty quickly. trump gave the green light to software company Oracle to take a stake in Tiktok and Walmart was going to be a major investor. But then over in Beijing Bite damps which owns tiktok said, hey, hey, not so fast we don't WanNa lose control of the biggest. APP. To ever come out of China. So talks have stalled but you know the parties having given up. They're still discussing how they can maybe resolve this, but the stakes are so high David for Tiktok I mean, even a temporary ban could mean ninety percent of tiktok users will quit and join the competitors you know in in light of this happening many other apps have cropped up that see opportunity here trying to take you know the users who you maybe think Tiktok might go away and hope that they jump over to their platform. What about this basic question bobby. Is Data safe on Tiktok if we're using the United States yeah. This is at the very heart of the debate. You know the trump administration says, having a Chinese owner creates a national security risk since China's government has unfettered access to private business in the country, and there is a consensus among experts that that's a real concern but the particular threat from Tiktok that's lot shakier. The White House has never offered ironclad evidence that can definitely get its hands on the data of Americans and Tiktok says it's shielded because none of the data is stored on Chinese soil. And most of its data on Americans is encrypted. That's said David None of those assurances are cooling the heat from the White House. All right, this journey continues NPR's. Bobby. Bobby thanks so much for covering it. You gotta thanks David.

TikTok Awaits Judge's Ruling on Whether U.S. Can Ban Downloads

"Federal judge in Washington, decides today whether President? Trump's ban of Chinese owned APP TIKTOK can begin at midnight NPR's Bobby. Allen. Reports. Justice Department lawyers will today ask a federal judge to allow hugely popular APP Tiktok to be greatly restricted in the US trump officials want to prevent people in the US from downloading tiktok for updates to the APP to stop and for contracts with American servers to be terminated the white. House says China's Gary Government can use TIKTOK to spy on Americans but. TIKTOK, says that theory isn't supported by evidence experts say a Chinese intrusion is possible in theory but Tiktok has done a lot to protect Americans information. A deal to save tiktok appears to be stalled tick Tock says even a short term ban? Could result in ninety percent of its users quitting Bobby Allen NPR news. San

Reflecting on RBG and Redefining Success

"Hey everyone we're back from. From the last time, you heard us well I. We want to acknowledge that we are recording this episode hours after receiving the News Supreme Court Justice Ruth. Bader GINSBURG has passed. So this is a couple of hours now. So we're we're past the shock and sadness, but we have to acknowledge it and he all her episode. We talked about how important the Supreme Court is in. This is another reason why we're we're excited to over by didn't Harris because how important the courts are and we have to watch out for say hypocrisy because my Ceuta Republican senators supple failed McConnell is already hours after she's best already promising to just bulldoze a Republican nominated. person. To the Supreme Court. Yeah, literally to add salt to the wound Brendan I. been feeling all the things we poured some rose. Am honor of her that we both shut some tears. It's it's it's a hard hard evening. Yes. We've shared some tears for doing a toast Rosa for BG. So I think many of us have have dreaded this day for a long time we knew it was coming. Not only because it obviously mark the passing of champion of women's rights but also because of what it can mean for the future of our country but it's you know we're we're trying to use this as fuel to keep doubling down on the things that we're doing. So wanted to share a quick thing that we're working on. We're co hosting a phone banking session October third at Twelve PM PS virtual, of course, check out the Lincoln the notes how you can sign up it is a bilingual phone banks. We're especially looking for Spanish speakers and it. It's really easy if you haven't had any experience phone banking, the point is that it's really an easy way to get involved in. You'll get all the instruction during the during the actual phone banking. So Cool I love that the. NFL is leading this. I love. It does really taking true to what she said in the last episode like every week you commit to doing something more for this election and that's great. So thanks for leading that and Y'all sign up. So despite that sad news by that by the time you're hearing this it's been a few days and we've all hopefully had some time collectively grieving and continue her legacy but we do want to celebrate a lot of things as well. This is our first episode happening during lat next heritage months. So let's give them a racket to all of us from carshield. Cares to. Makes Heritage Month. So why don't we give that at? Yes actually one thing I was really thinking about recently I was thinking I wanted to give them a threat to being by cultural. To, Brennan as. To most of our our listeners. Reflecting on this and how much broader our perspective is because we're bicultural and I and I know I I remember growing up I used to think that being like eating was like something that was bad and I always wanted to be more Mexican and then I wanted to be more American I just never feeling like I fit in but now I really started to think about how that's really a strength because we can. Really look at kind of what values from our that upper upbringing do we want to carry with us and some of them are problematic and toxic shit. But then some of them are I think are great and same thing from some of the values American valley some of them are very toxic and some of them I think are great. It's a week to kind of see from the outside what we like in what we. Create our own values in redefines new identity I love that. Part of the secret to the success of this podcast is that can we talk about the beauty of our identity as imperfect as some view it like you're not Mexican enough and American now guess what we're both in Los Angeles. Awesome. Just keep. Being yourselves and then don't look at it as a negative to celebrate exactly who you are. And someone else who celebrates exactly who she is and who I think is a very perfect example of being bicultural is mighty. Ena Hosa. She is a dream guest for combating or were so excited to have her on this show. You. All probably know who she is but just as a reminder, she is the anchor and executive producer of the peabody award winning show Latina say as well as co host of in the thick media's political podcast. You know Hosa has in for millions about changing cultural and political landscape in America and abroad she's here to talk all about her new book once I was you which this week was listed as five hot books by the National Book Review Let's give them my. Talk About Latina power. So share that you got to hear this interview, what did you think Oh my God I am so jealous that you got to interview her I. Absolutely fucking Love This interview Madina Hosa I feel like she's doing exactly what she's supposed to be doing because as she's she's meant to be a journalist actually sounds so soothing and powerful in also relatable at all at the same time, she honestly is goals on goals and You know one part of the interview that's I mean so many parts stood out but one part of this sit out because it referenced something that has coming has been coming up with a lot of our listeners and are followers. There's a part where she talks about her she. She leaves I think a very high paying job, and then her dad expresses some concern. You know she says, well, how Gomez, how are you going to make money and then she says bobby like I don't know. But she you know she felt like she wasn't making her happy and I think there was a you remember the quote or would dress she says I was a success but I didn't feel proud which was so powerful because. Yeah like you want to be proud of your work, and maybe that's the way she learned to define success versus traditional notions of success, which is the Nice House a nice car and the you know the Nice 401k package all those things, right? Right. Right. So really think rethinking about like what actually makes you happy and what actually success mean to you there is a one thing that. She said that kind of goes along with with that we're the drivers of what society is going to look like in the future we can determine what matters how we go goes the market, and for me that was thinking about how like as Latinos especially, during something we can think about like how much more powerful we are than we even were like you know I don't know five ten. Powerful. that. We can actually redefine not only would this what looks like for us but what are what values are important for this country? So we we have power and I think growing up I didn't most of us I definitely didn't feel very powerful I felt like I was living in a system that was created by white people and led by white people when I was just trying to fit in. So just really thinking about how. People were really finding our voice more than ever before and. I know hoses book is a great example about the power of voice and how we really right now as demographics change I really stepping into that power and we can define our own our own business success in our own values in this country.

Making Treatment a Virtual Reality for More People

"It's a real treat to have Bob Poznanovic with me today because a long time ago before he went to work at Hazel and before he became the vice president of Business Development for this organization, Bob and I met in the Community of recovery in Saint Paul Bobby. It was in about nineteen, eighty, nine, ninety five when you and I would get in the car together and drive to center city I'll certainly a lot has happened in our lives personally and professionally just share with our audience today your personal connection to the Organization Hi William. It was February thirteenth of nineteen ninety five when I had reached my bottom. When I was using cocaine. A really high. Amount. In. CHICAGO. I had just lost my job at the senior executive in a technology company in camp lost my relationships and. Like everybody else and reach that point that I ran out of options and Fortunately found the Hazel and foundation and went to treatment said February and stayed in center city until March and then I went to fellow club where I met you and other members of the community some point in at the end of the march we started volunteering and every Saturday a group of would go to center city and share our strength experience and hope with patients that became a big secret to you know to my recovery is at volunteering and giving back and having some fun. You'll filling that void that drugs and alcohol had that was now being filled. With recovering I think that's one of the one of the promises and one of the gifts is to have really to friendships like yourself and others. Throughout the year. So it's nice to see you and it's nice to be here in the same capacity with you being able to carry, put a face on recovery and carry the message of hope who have ever imagined it right when. You talk about how much you lost but. We're so glad that you've gained so much and we're so glad that you continue to hold onto the expertise that has put you into the role now as vice president of Business Development for this organization at really a critical time, not only in our growth but as we. Address the pandemic of. Corona virus. And you're in charge of a lot of that effort. Can you take us through the process of developing and law launching? He's willing. Betty. Ford's telehealth strategy. Sure so because. My background has always been in technology. I was looking ahead and trying to predict kind of where the industry was going to go is you're looking at technology and healthcare in general I. Think it was pretty clear that technology utilization in behavioral health was really lagging in particularly even more. So in substance use a lot of organizations didn't even have electronic medical records. And you looked at the look at the industry, look at the industry problems, patient problems and care delivery problems back in twenty eighteen. When I HAPPEN TO HAVE A. Demo of some software that one of our pair partners was developing. And it clicked on me that. This technology could be. Used to deliver care differently. So was in two thousand, eighteen we started to talk about how could we use video? In live video between patients, not just in one in one environment which was being done. For telehealth for for years. But how could it be done in a group environment because the problem we are looking to solve Was Access. We're working with a lot of our partners around the country and communities. Academic health centers and other state organizations in healthcare to rural organs. Rural patients is a real challenge. So you know, could it help provide care improve access to roll Marcus would the convenience? Of being able to get care wherever you're at improve engagement. If you live in downtown La Chicago New York you know the catchment area is really small and some big cities because people don't want to fight the traffic after work to get the care. So convenience improve engagement. And the other was would. Stigma. Could we help through overcome some of the stigma. By. Not Making people physically have to show up at a building Kinda put a label on themselves Kenneth come out much more in a sense in Kuwait engaged them earlier by having them. Feel it's safer. As, well as convenient. To start that way. So we it started in two thousand eighteen down the past, and could we accomplished all the goals of of healthcare which is approve access improve outcomes improve. Patient satisfaction and lower costs.

An Excerpt from the book Flirting with Darkness by Ben Courson

"An excerpt from the book flirting with darkness. Ben. Carson. Weapon number three, the magic number of greatness. I got to a point in my struggle with depression where something needed needed to change must suffering. So badly, I finally decided to do something about it. The ten thousand hour rule saved my life. His Book Outliers Malcolm Glad well demonstrated that to be truly greeted anything. You have to put in ten thousand hours of practice. People such as world chess champion Bobby. Fischer businessman Bill Joy, and IBM founder Bill Gates are among the many examples. Glad. While gives of people who excelled because they accelerated they focused and worked hard and gave at least ten thousand hours to becoming the best at what they did. Glad will show that whether you want to be a fiction writer or master criminal. Hockey player or a pianist ten thousand hours was the magic number of greatness. Bent my mind to that goal is a writer Manspeaker. A resolved to stop wasting my energies, processing psychological trauma and to go on a diametrically opposed direction. Instead of disappearing over why dreams weren't coming to pass, I decided to commit myself to working my fingers to the bone to ensure they did. Psychologists, John Hayes quote looked at how long it took the best composers of all time to create their first grey work. He found that nobody including Mozarts was a child prodigy had produced a piece of work of any significance until about ten years after they had I, taken music no amount of innate talent even in a field of genius such as music could overcome the years of practice necessary to Korea work someone may be talented. They may be lucky but they still have to go through ten years of practice in order to become a master and quote. When Churchill came to power during World War Two he said this as he was being inaugurated into office as prime. Minister quote. I. Offer you nothing save blood, toil tears, and sweat and quo. Lecture Chill Ready to go to battle anew, the path will be difficult PROC- ready to claim own finest hour. Getting better stars, which is getting off your tuition in doing something. So I did. My goal was to become a writer and a speaker put in the needed hours. My nearly worked myself to death, but it was infinitely better than brooding found the effort. Cathartic in fulfilling my spirit's began to lift. I figured I had two options number one either get discouraged that my dreams were not coming pass or number to spend the effort of getting prepared for when they did. Legendary preacher Charles spurgeon advised students to stop worrying about when they would get their shot at speaking and concentrate instead on their ability, and they'll let God take the opportunity in other words quit fretting over the how and focus on the what I took these words to heart and focused on my skill set as I improved my craft, our English word amateur comes from a French Italian an line route which means to love an obvious works when he loves the process and it feels good a professional is someone who worked seven days a week whether he feels like it or not. Today. My TV show hope generation is on twenty different networks more than one hundred and eighty countries and radio shows heard on more than four hundred stations daily. I get to speak in stadiums and arenas. My quote unquote overnight success came through hours of hard work. How you'll spend your ten thousand hours may be different from how I spend mind but you'll find as I did a clear focus and a way of getting off the existential treadmill of despair, transform your life but the age of twenty one, the average American has put ten thousand hours of practice into computer and video games when I use those hours for something more productive. How hard you hustle in the darkness determines how brightly you shine in the spotlight. To prepare for speaking to people I got really good at lecturing my furniture. My chairs were my captive audience I remember that Billy Graham. One said he got his start by preaching to alligators before he preached in stadiums. You have to start with a small stuff and work your way up. So I took every opportunity that presented itself. I spoke to classes of little kids and homeless shelters at old folks, homes, and to student clubs I volunteered to take the opportunities. Others turned down, I got lots of practice. When other speakers turned an organization or church down my said, yes I did this I several years Only the small minded person will refuse the small task for me if I had an audience of four people those enough to get some more practice to put in some more hours toward my ten thousand our goal. Jesus said that if you're faithful and a few small things, you'll be given responsibility over bigger ones Matthew Twenty five that sound good to me. Yes sometimes I did feel like surface the tragic here of Greek mythology who had to roll a boulder of a hill only to see roll back down then roll it back up again only for it to roll back down again repeatedly, I'll stubborn in my pursuit it was a great weapon against despair to keep working in spite of how I felt, which puts me in the mind of a scene from Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings in the First Book of that trilogy the Fellowship of the Ring, a band of warriors is commission travel to the ends of the Earth to destroy the evil ring of power by casting it into mount doom. During their long journey. Gandalf who was their leader was thought to be killed in the minds of Maurya in response airborne stepped up to lead the band in his stead amid his grief and despair he cried out farewell Gandalf what hope have we with you then he turned to the fellowship and said, we must do without hope let us gird ourselves and weep no more come. We have a long road. Like that trek to mount doom healing is usually a long journey. We normally don't start feeling better overnight sometimes, we must go on when we feel absolutely no hope. Our quest leads down a winding path and his sometimes fraught with trolls and Goblins and all manner of Dr Treasures. But psychological heroism is possible in such journey is were taking like Eric Gordon Frodo my set my foot upon my own path out of depression I gave them my flirtation with darkness and began to tread the road toward a grand purpose and it worked after many many years. The Dreams I had begun to despair finally came true new ones came into sight, but it all began by putting one foot in front of the other. If you allow yourself to just sit around and partly catatonic state stuffing yourself with junk food is a form of therapy and watching callous hours of television. You'll probably never start feeling better. But I. Tell You that you get off the couch and venture into the world to do something toward your goals. Things will start to change in your heart and mind if you pull yourself out of bed and get going on your dreams, that's how you'll will begin the journey to healing your broken spirit.

Making Peace with Your Family

"Their feud has been brewing since childhood last year during a family trip things got so bad. They came to actual blows. Their father had to pull them apart bobby and robin our sisters but they barely speak Robin says the sound of bobbies voice makes her sick Nicole they're younger sister Peter. Their little brothers say enough is enough the Cole Road to us in hopes that we could help bring her sisters back together. Father Peter. Senior is also here. If, you have conflicts within your family and let me just say who doesn't this show. We'll give you a whole new way to deal with them. It could save you years and years of pain Mark Brian says, he wrote this book codes of Love How to rethink your family and remake your life because he used to hate his own family he stayed away from them for over ten years throughout the show mark is going to be telling us how he changed all that and how you can too. So we're not here just to have because you know you can watch one of those other shows where people, chairs and Viewed as they bring out surprise family members, you haven't seen in a long time. That's not what we're GONNA. Do we're here to try to resolve it and for the millions of you who are also separated from your family to try to bring back some sense of coat of love that you once had memories of that earlier this week mark heard both sides of this family feud starting with Bobby Nicole and Peter. At Different Times Robin has stopped speaking to each of us that she has low self esteem and. She whenever argument comes up she says to me that I I think I'm better than everybody else and that I'm a goody goody and. And this type of staff. Which of course, upsets me last week I went for lunch with Robin and a few of our cousins, the bridesmaids kind of thing for Robin's wedding to discuss things and I just felt that bobby should have been involved with that. That would have been you know more of A. Total package I'm to the point now where it's like okay. You. Go ahead and behave that way. Not. Going to let it bug me. I have tried to contact her and she has my number blocked. She has your number blocked live in the country can't do that on my phone. So I don't have a number of locked and I have an answering machine and I've never had any messages about. Mark spent time with Robin to hear her version. I've always felt like the black sheep. Always felt like. Fingers always point to that me. I always felt like troublemaker. I've been accused of being over emotional. I've been accused of being. sleazy. have been accused of being slutty. I've been accused of. Basically, everything out there. in particular with my sister Bobby. I. I. Always felt compared to her. I always felt like I had to live up to. My parents, expectations. Of the expectations that she set? What are the three happiest moments of your life. They don't include family. Or? My parents were there when my daughter was born. Thought was one of the happiest moments midlife. My Dad was there when I graduated I. Guess that was another happy moment. The, day I moved out with the happiest moment of my life. And I honestly, truly with all my heart believe that was the best thing ever did because I've come so far sets. If you could go back in time, what would you change? I would I would change. I would put myself with the different family. But you can't do that down. So mark says there four basic steps to help you refrain reconnect with your family and they are I remember what are the good things? So many times in today's psychology we're looking at the bad things. My parents do that messed me up I, WanNa look back at what's the pleasant things were the strengths and the and the love and the loyalty that I've been given for these two, five fifty how old we are those years? The second one is we want to reflect on that. We want to see what's my part in this dynamic in my family when am I at fault and also I don't want to end the blame and the labeling you know. She's the black sheep she's the she's the goody two shoes she's been labeled to by other members of her family is the goody two shoes we want to be out of those labels. So we want to reflect on that what are part is and what's the larger picture of our family? labeled. Early, you just sort of follow that pattern absolutely. Yes. Yes. I have never told Robin she slutty. I've never used those words that she used on her. I'm always careful I don't offend with what I say and ever since we're very young, robin has done things on purpose. she just says whatever she wants whether it hurts your feelings or not. So the slutty thing but those terms that you're using those are not terms that she used or is that what you think she thinks of you. Okay. It might have been another family member but everybody was sitting there and it was them against me and that's how it was portrayed. But. Then again, sitting up here, acting like she's a goody two shoes I wouldn't be here if we didn't have problems. You know who? Didn't cause all my family's problems. We're not here just because of me and you know what? I don't even think there's a lot of family problems here beyond some role definition and the next thing we're going to do is we're going to take a look and refrain these experiences from this. New Perspective. Where we learned where each of us is trying to show concern, but it's being misconstrued as criticism or. As control.

TikTok ditches Microsoft talks

"Media is reporting that American companies Microsoft and Oracle will not acquire the U. S operations of the video sharing platform. TIC TAC as NPR's Bobby Allen reports, the popular APP could be shut down in the U. S. If it doesn't find a buyer soon. Microsoft says its bid to take over TIC Tac was rejected by bite dance that's Tic Tac's Beijing based parent company. Software company, Oracle placed a separate bid, but its status is uncertain. Under an order signed by President Trump, Tic Tac, has just days to sell its U. S operations to an American firm. Talks have been complicated by China. Passing new regulations restricting how tic tac secret sauce algorithm can be exported. Tic TAC has become something of a punching bag and Trump's trade war with China. The White House says TIC TAC raises privacy and national security concerns because of its Chinese ownership, But Ticktock says those fears are merely political. ByteDance Rejects Offers For TikTok's U.S. Operations

"There are just days left for Tiktok if it's not sold to an American company, the video sharing APP will be banned in the US. Microsoft was seen as the most likely buyer but TIKTOK Cheney's parent company has now rejected Microsoft's offer. NPR's Bobby Ellen joins us with the latest Bobby Good Morning. Hey, good morning. There was all kinds of talk about this big deal with Microsoft. What happened to it? Yes. So in short, it was turned down by bite dance. If you remember that's tiktok based parent company and you know this really hurt Microsoft Microsoft was really gunning to choir tiktok and it's because it would have been a gold mine of data on young people on one of the world's fastest growing APPS. Microsoft has the money and the technical know how to operate it. But yeah, in a statement Sunday Microsoft says it's offer was And they didn't explain why but they did say their proposal would have protected national security interests, which is how we ended up here in the first place. So. Let's talk about this deadline I mean president trump has said that tiktok poses a national security threat because it's operated out of China. The president is saying that he's GonNa Force Tiktok to to to shut down if they can't sell it to an American operation. So I, mean now that this Microsoft deal has fallen through what happens. Right, so trump says tiktok has no choice but to find a buyer by Tuesday. So tomorrow but an executive order, the president signed talk actually has another five days after that but that's not really much time in the dealmaking world to try to figure this out. Right. So I mean Microsoft having its offer rejected definitely makes it more likely that tick tock. Forever in the US, but it's still could be saved. Right. Rachel is not lost. Others are still in talks with Tiktok do we know who the others are? Yes. So The Wall Street Journal reports that talk is expected to name a software company Oracle as its quote trusted tech partner. Now, what does that mean I have no idea and most people don't know either. Now Chinese State TV has another take out today they're saying that neither Microsoft Oracle will be buying tick tock. It's unclear how definitive that report is but in any case, oracle would a really odd partner here I, mean it sells database products to mostly businesses that has no experience operating social media company. It doesn't even sell any major consumer products analysts. Dan is was among the technology watchers I talked to who is equally as confused the Oracle Technology Partnership, which I think too many. Still a head scratcher is that enough to keep this apple lives. Right. So that's the key question is whatever oracle and Tiktok hammered out enough to satisfy the trump administration so that they will cool their pressure on the APP and let it survive. We just don't know yet. In, China itself has has sort of thrown a wrench into this rate doing some things that are delaying talks. That's right. Yeah. So in the middle of these talks, China passed a new rule restricting how a foreign buyer say an American company like Microsoft would. Could could take on a Chinese algorithm and Tiktok is popular because it has this amazing algorithm right I mean it's really seen as kind of the secret sauce of TIKTOK. It's what makes it very personalized. It's what makes you know videos just go viral really really fast. So can talk be sold without its treasured algorithm would tick dog even be Tiktok without i. mean these are really big questions right now and just to end just to step back how exceptional is the situation now with president trump putting this kind of pressure on a private company. Yeah I mean unprecedented as you know, Rachel's term, we hear thrown around a lot in the trump era and I don't think it would be a stretch to use it here I mean the president using the power of his office to force in overseas company to sell its business in the US, is very, very unusual but still that's the situation Tiktok is now facing. NPR's Bobby Allen. Thank you. Thank you Rachel.

"Life and you know school and but then I was going to give a little bit of advice and it's different giving a fourteen year old a motivational talk. That is with anyone else because I'll do businesses or I'll do college kids but he's fourteen and I'm sitting next to Kaitlin my girlfriend at the bar when we're doing this and so when I you'll hear me say this is what you can get. I put the camera on Caitlyn. But here you go. This is me talking to Kaitlin. Hey here's the thing. When I was your age I was just like you and I stay focused and I worked hard and froze their okay. We got your back. Sorry real bad internet data. When I was your age I was just like you worked hard and this is what I got whenever I finally so you can have that to keep working hard. I see your shirt there. Oh you both enjoy so Kayla too. But I was showing him 'cause I I was a nerdy kid as I keep working hard. You get your girlfriend but hopefully that made his birthday a little better but oh. I'm sure it did. That was super bowl of you to notice that and reach out to him and then he added pin majority Kayla on it was. It was a great thing so well and what you're doing is the exact definition of him. Enjoy your spreading joy to someone on their birthday when it wasn't probably birthday envision themselves having? Yeah he was a little bummed. Yeah I mean I was a little bombed and I'm an adult man when I was quarantined for my birthday but I can only imagine being a kid. Kate and if you're listening to the happy birthday but own we forgot to update the draft. We draft on our show every Monday a him. Since this is your segment I will let you go first sometimes bones. You find something and you're like it's so good that you wanNA share with everyone so I've been to my family. I found a video of a dad and his kid and the kid probably ten years old and the dad sitting there asking the Kid. A bunch of financial questions and the kid is just nailing unlike what is debt what is equity. What is all this and this kid is like so smart with money? It's hilarious okay. We'll things that bring money to a bank account ability. These are things that take out your bank account. North ship is to become an entrepreneur was entrepreneurship as a process of setting up a business. Financial Risk Entrepreneur national organizers and operates the business businesses also spoke from me me. Komo that is great. How old is like nine or ten? I would think probably about ten years old. Yeah Oh my gosh. That is amazing. Also depressing at the same time. I'm here at home. My nine year old like how many pennies are in a quarter. I thought you were going to go five. You're at home going. I also don't know what an entrepreneur as been an entrepreneur in my life. I'll do my mind. It's not it doesn't make me smile but it was really the craziest thing that I saw on the Internet and Eddie sent me this. I pulled the video of all of these ufo. The navy release three new videos of unidentified aerial phenomena. And they're nutty and ought to play for you or the pilots that are seeing it and they'll go guys. It's moving way too fast being American airplane this here. Here's the clip. Now they're about to hit seven hundred thousand because in the past few weeks everybody wants to look at these doodles and their brand new baby because the doodle like cuddles with the baby. And it's the craziest thing ever seen. What's the account people can follow Samson that Dude Like D. O. D. FOR DOODLE? Okay there you go. Let's go over to lunchbox. What do you have is watching the NFL draft this week in? It's the last round and this Guy Steven solvent homeless as a kid. Both parents are in jail he goes to Lsu and he doesn't think he's going to get drafted and near the end of the seventh round. He gets a call from the Seattle seahawks and he thinks it's a prank call and his reaction is awesome. Because no I am. I'm the GM for the hawks. You'RE GONNA come can be with Dr King. Go ahead coast to coast lease. No we're selecting right here buddy. We got your dog. You come to come to Seattle. That's awesome all right all right all right. Let's do one more Morgan. Do you have something you brought from the Internet. So it's one hundred and one year old woman. She lived through the nineteen eighteen Spanish flu. She beat cancer and now she's beating the corona virus so she's literally a superhuman. Whoa Dang. That's awesome. That's the triple crown boys. That's awesome how I was reading a story about the nineteen eighteen flu and they had their version of what they call. The doctor felt she. Then where nine thousand eighteen. The Guy was like you have to wear masks. And you have to be social distancing a different term. He used but everybody was like. You're out of your mind. But he's what saved people from that flew just enveloping. Everybody and they were like nine thousand. Nine hundred Dr. Chee look it up. If you want to read a fascinating article it really was is a so many parallels and the guy and they made a political back then to all the stuff he was saying but he was like no. I'm just using science. And he saved a bunch of people's lives crazy. Morgan thank you for that story Eddie. Good segment my friend. Thank you man. Read this article and it interests me because headphones all the time. The main reason for hearing loss nowadays is constant headphone use. Now Mine is in a different capacity because I wear them to work. It probably not as loud as if you listen to music all day in them. But it's like hey if you ever headphones yeah. I was listening to Music. Like keep it at sixty percent of the volume. And then if you're traveling and you have them on our you take them off for like ten minutes. I'll give your ears and a chance to catch up. My son loves to listen to things. Way Too loud and my husband freaks out because my husband's a pilot and he would love nothing more than our sun to grow up and be a pilot and he knows hearing is a big thing and he doesn't want him to ruin his ears. Well that's odd 'cause I listen to loud music. Sometimes in your husband never cared about. My Ears. Already developed Questions you don't want to be a pilot. Maybe I still think I could do that. Okay to if you're looking for someone to be with forever. Aren't you looking for someone who is smart and can provide into and then if you're married to a lawyer? They probably win every argument. Yeah that'd be tough. A PSYCHIATRIST IS AT NUMBER THREE FOR SEXIEST JOBS. For men is that sexy. He's probably analyzing every move. I make the unsexy EST jobs for men tow truck drivers at number one because to do that job. You have to be mean and very rude. Oh I bet they're not I bet for them. It's hard sometimes. They're towing a truck or car. They're probably like Oh man hates it at the do this. I hated I hated. I hate it but it's job. Yeah I don't know I don't think you'd keep doing it if you hate it that much. Oh well hey if you got to. The bills. Trash collector is at number two. Because it's smelly and TV producer is unsexy because of the odd hours so if the sexiest job for for a woman a doctor would be up. That'd be a good one I but I put that for me too. I think just a doctor so trustworthy and smart and you know me. I Love Smart Radio Persons on on there though. It just missed it. It was just missed it. We're in the middle of our forced movie reviews. We all drew. Somebody's name gets recommended. Movie for them. And Morgan. Watch steel magnolias. As was forced on her amy and gave it four and a half out of five showbiz. Shelby's you really enjoyed that movie Yeah I was really besides making me cry yes I really liked it. We pulled up all the rotten tomatoes from all these movies to see who got the best end of the deal and Black Panther was ninety. Seven percent positive lunchbox. Watching mine was the worst by far is making me watch box of moonlight. That is the only one in the sixties. Everybody else was seventies eighties or nineties sixties. Ain't bad sixty one percent his mind so I have to start tonight. I guess I'm going to watch like twenty minutes of it but lunchbox did watch Black Panther sent to him by Morgan Number. Two okay. Let's you're forced review of Black Panther. Yeah so going in. I was really excited because there was so much hype behind this movie. Everybody talks about how great it is and I'll be honest with you. It was awful boring like there wasn't much action for a like a like a Comic Book Action Movie. The supposed to be a lot of fighting and there was not very much I was just like okay can we get to some fighting images storyline. Okay Boring Boring. I didn't really think it was that good. I thought it was way overrated way over hyped and maybe that was the problem. Maybe I was just expecting excellent things because everybody talked about how so it was so great. And you're gonNA love it and you're GonNa be amazed and I was just like man. This is not that good. Are you sure you didn't Watch Pink Panther? Pretty sure I watched it. Okay what are you? What are you ready to give it two and a half out of five? Wow listen I saw bypass I loved it. Did you now my kids. Did they love De Movie? Mike is podcast movies. What'd you think of Black Panther? I mean that's one of the best marvel movies. Great box of being a contrarian here big one hundred percent okay. Well it's his review. His force review is two and a half. What kind is five yes okay? Ninety seven percent positive Moroccan tomatoes. I guess I guess I'm a three percent right. They're not it's not. It's everybody's Cup of tea but do you like the superhero movies. I like some of them like I liked ironman because I felt like iron man was a lot of action. The whole time fights fights craziness. This was just I was just. I wasn't my cup of tea. I can't ruin it. There's things that I want to say but I don't want to ruin it for people that I'm just like okay. That's just What else have you seen other than Ironman? I've Seen Batman. Okay Not Marvel okay. That's it all you haven't so you haven't seen any of the series though. I'm seeing any of them so I'm just jumping into this one and I was just like okay cool but that's okay as long as you know. Jump into avengers like that. I think I haven't seen avengers and I at one point. I even called Morgan number. Two and I was like am. I supposed to die miss something from another show because I don't know what's happening right here. And she was like just watching. Explain it and it did explain it but I thought I'd missed it from one of the other movies Morgan. How you feel about him. Hating Black Panther hurts my heart a lot but I can't hate him for his own opinion but Black Panther is a fantastic movie. I mean he's just wrong. It's also really good. Okay Next up amy has to watch parasite Eddie has to watch eight mile and I have to read the cliff notes of box of moonlight. You got to watch the whole movie. Come on okay come on. I mean I don't worry mine. I have to watch great. I've seen parasite I know the subtitles or mugging you. You'll forget about it. You're just going with the bad attitude and your rating is ninety. Nine percent amy come on like that and Black Panther two of the highest rated movies and all of rotten tomatoes and I had to read subtitles a mind. So it's the same thing. Amy Subtitles on Black Panther. Yes occasionally okay. This is a different language. I I do get used to the subtitles on Marcos Mexico so I guess I could get used to the ones on this okay. Well Good luck until the end of the week defenders these movies they say the hand sanitizer. Lysol wife's all those. They won't return to normal until August at least and they are producing the stuff so fast they still can't meet the demand even with toilet paper. It could be early next year to win. The shelves are back and they're full of toilet paper. We can get someone we need it. So are you able to get toilet paper right now? We ordered some a couple. I found some not so long ago but then I needed to drop it off at my dad's he said he needed and I was like well shoot so then we ordered some and we knew it might take a while so we just were patient and I think about four weeks later it showed up A. Wow that's the delay four weeks. We're pretty good. I have So step I was doing with continental so I have some some toilet paper. I watch boxing to win the cotton out we ordered from Cotton L. And I forgot about it and when it came I thought when I saw the cotton packaging on my doorstep. I thought that you because I knew you were working with them. I was like well. This is just so sweet. Bobby got with continental in order to in my husband said No. You don't remember about a month ago. We order that crazy. It takes that long. Yeah took so long. I forgot we ordered. It couldn't find any anywhere and he hit me up so I sent him a big old bag of it. But we're doing that Sheriff Square Campaign for Charity Instagram. If you want to see that Mr Bobby bones so I saw that story and then I saw Chicago's public health director said they thinking about going to a swimming pool. Not a great idea during the crisis. Because there's something called fecal shedding here. We go to the practice of obviously being in a swimming pool. Unfortunately we do know that. There's some fecal shedding corona virus. If I can go ahead and share that and so as well as associated with pools would have locker rooms with which people would need to change. So you would have more people congregated in the same setting your thoughts. I've never heard fecal shedding before. Beagle shutters. I don't ever want to hear it again. But if you're thinking about going to pools now I get it. That's a huge. Were my kids. We love taking them to the community pool in the summer. They.

"Of a sermon so loved that speaking of that you have an Air Force magazine because your husband was in the Air Force Academy he served in the Air Force and they send out a magazine that is what basically well it's for Air Force Academy Alumni and it's called checkpoints and anytime it comes in the mail. My husband reads it cover to cover. And we've been getting it since as long as we've married because he graduated before we got married. It is the header of this. Tell me something. Good is what they wrote on there. Yeah so at the if you open it up again like I said he reads it cover to cover and they're a retired. Colonel named Cathy C. Mclean class of Nineteen eighty-two wrote an article called tell me something good and the first line in the article is I. Enjoy listening to the bobby bones. Show morning radio program while commuting. And then she talks about Vavi Amy lunchbox and how we put a smile on her face with our antics but then that we have tell me something good so she used it to launch into three. Tell me something goods from Air Force Alumni. And then she and she signed off. Is Our graduate community after something. Good most definitely bobby bones. Amy Lunchbox Take Heed Nice. Say we're taking he all the he'd taking it i. It was funny when my husband's showed it to me. He was part proud but park jealous. Because I think being in the air force is just a big deal to be here and he's like to know what I would give to be featured in this magazine and now my wife is in. That's awesome were shot her out to we pre. What's her name? Again Amy yes. She's retired. Colonel Cathy mclain class of eighty. Two man appreciate you for what you do in life. Appreciate you for mentioning us in that magazine. And that's why we tell me something. Good we just. We love it. We love it brings a smile to your face because it brings a smile to ours and fifty. Five after every hour is when that happens. I WANNA play some John Party. He posted a picture on his instagram story. And he put on some glasses like I wear because he wears glasses and he goes. Hey Bobby I never wear these and take my cowboy hat off but he looked just like you see the picture just like me. Yeah I agree I was. I thought he was making fun of posting a picture of me but John Party about the cowboy hat and glasses like I have looks like me so I thought that was pretty funny rough morning. Gorny where do you take someone who has been injured in a peekaboo accident or do you take someone who's been injured in a peekaboo accident the ICU warning hey? I saw this story beginning to jokes a six year. Old Kid name Kalugin mcglaughlin set up a free joke. Stand at the end of his driveway where he tells jokes to people who walk by just to lift their spirits. He says sixteen or seventeen jokes. He feels they're all pretty strong. Here's a clip of a few of his best jokes that if you walk by he'll hit you with red white and blue sad candy cane please black white and red a penguin. That's embarrassed with the parents. Favorite lighter and thinking have any bad jokes but my sister is like awful ones. There you go. He knows about as many as you do sixteen or seventeen. We've done this for about two years. We've heard about sixteen or seventeen. What are you GONNA say? Is cuter coming from him. I agree with that. Not you're not but one of the big stories yesterday and Country Music was that the ACM's are going to be in Nashville for the first time ever and I think if you were just hearing that on the surface or if you're not super inside that doesn't mean anything to you because who most people don't know the difference when the ACM's and the CMA's honestly. I think I do because I'm on boards and I present on these shows but for the most part people like wait. It hasn't always been in Nashville. It hasn't so the Siyam as which happened in November are always in Nashville the. Acm's are usually in Las Vegas and that office is in California so because of what happened this year. They weren't able to have it. They moved September and now for the first time. It's going to be in Nashville so I don't know that that's a big story too. Many folks except real industry people but the real cool story is is that it's going to be in three different places this year. They're going to do the show and I'm not sure how they're going to pull it off yet. But in September they're going to do the show at the Opera House where they have the Grand Ole opry at the Reimann Auditorium which is a music venue that used to house the opry way back in the day and still does occasionally and the Bluebird cafe which is a small place where riders go and play so that is the real headline here not that it moved to Nashville. Because I don't think most people know the difference. I wouldn't if I wasn't super involved in in the weeds but they're gonNA do the show from three different places which I think is pretty cool. Well Yeah Well. You know the difference between each venue because you've played all three. So what is the cool factor of them bouncing to each location? Like what do you think could be special about it? Being played there. I wonder if the opera houses can actually have some of the Grand Ole opry stuff. Now I've played the opry show performed at the grand elaborate probably fourteen times or so and why that's awesome is because it's the Grand Ole opry. Its longest running show. The radio show has been around forever. We're still doing the operate on Saturday nights and I'm hosting it and helping produce the TV version of that so that's cool because it's his nostalgia from the Grand Opera and that one will be at theatre about four thousand people okay. The Reimann is a music venue which was built in eighteen hundreds and it's been around forever It's worth the opera actually started before moved and that is really cool because of the history that the venue holds. I usually play a show a year there. it's an pews old pews and then the bluebird is tiny tiny. It's the smallest of the mall. You can fit about sixty people in there and when you play in there you're it's very vulnerable because people are sitting right on top of you and I'm I'm betting on the show they're gonNA have people sitting around playing their Song Super Acoustic. Because that's been you of all of them. I like plan the operate the best because of the history there the rhyme and is probably the most fun because I play like hour long shows and the Bluebird is man. It's it's the hardest to play oddly. But it'll be interesting September back hopefully. That's the goal indulge me for a second and tell you the story came. You can't so what I do get on this Peleton bike and I don't enjoy it. I don't enjoy exercise but I try to exercise almost every day but I get on this bike and it is for thirty minutes awful because I don't let up. I just get on and go as hard as I can for thirty minutes and I'm going pretty good stretch before and some rock in it and I'm on pace to beat my personal record of has almost two years and I can feel that I'm on pace to be my personal record so I'm like okay. Let me just right so I get down to the last minute and I'm like time to turn IT I. I've already been just rocking and I'm out of breath. My legs are hurting but I can. I can take it. I'm trying to get like four seventy five for thirty minutes and so I finally hit over my pace and I'm like just keep up. Got Fifteen seconds left and then I go now. Newnan to not in my leg and my stomach and I'm grinding so hard on these. I'm just going standing up going as hard as I can. I think goes and I don't think anything of it and I'm exhausted. I'm sweating all over everything and I get off and you have to bike and a dry off and a walk over to the bathroom. I'm like I might as well and I started peeing blood y. Yeah so I'm peeing blood and I'm like Oh my goodness am I dying and then I think back. I think I heard something. Click as I was pedaling really hard. So there's blood everywhere because once started to see blood Kamata kind of reacted we're jerked so there's blood all over the toilet. I never had before. So I'm like holy crap so I cleaned it up and I don't know if I should tell Caitlyn and I can I know she's GonNa Freak Out I have a doctor's email so I'm like oh great. What do I do so I- Google it what happened. What's it mean when you don't do that by the way because it's going to give you the pyramid of the worst things I and so I'm like oh great more nervous and like let me just be again? If there's no blood this time it's probably just disarm fluke like blood flew p again later more blood so I had my doctor up and goes what explain what happened. Now's GonNa bike and he goes. Oh he goes yeah. That's not good. He said but you have a he. Matura he materia he materia something like that and I was like what does that he goes well. It's trauma inside your body and it happens to marathon runners when they run too hard and don't take breaks and it's like how can you been riding this bike? I was like Oh over last thirty days. And they got done twenty eight days on in two days off and he goes hardest every time he goes. Okay well you hurt yourself. You've injured your Oregon's because my guy when you get on you go to hard. He goes do you ever just take breaks and don't take. There's no breaks when I decided to do something I go. It goes wild and you probably shouldn't do that. He goes. You need to give yourself forty eight hours of doing nothing. And then if you're still bleeding then we have a bigger issue like you have some serious damage in there. And so that's what I have and I was so proud of myself that I injured myself from work and like I was working hard. I was working so hard. I entered an organ. How about that baby? Come on. Yeah I didn't even know that that was possible. In cases where there is no trauma exercise induced he mature usually resolves within around seventy two hours. After the athletic event knows I love athletic. Event was just you and your room trying to break a record by yourself. Yeah listen I compete. Even if it's myself and I did I one that's right. I may have injured all my organs. But you know who won me beat me? Well either way pinball. Yesterday it was crazy to see my two of my biggest injuries when I was training to do a triathlon. That's when I got my him Royd. Remember that Yeah. There were like Yeah you're bleeding out of your butt and I was like. Oh No dying or have you been running a lot of the training for a tribal and they go okay. Well this is what happens to runners whenever they trained too much. So I've been put on probation. Kahlon won't let me get on. The bikes took one of the pedals. Off So yeah she didn't. Yeah yeah there's because she knows all get on it when she goes to work. I'll get on the bike. That's hilarious. Okay well man. That's that's not right. Thought you were going whenever you said you heard pop. I thought your you hurt your but again. Oh Yeah I did hear my head a anal. What's it called tear you? Yeah it was a I I'm sure there's a fancier name for that like I played high school. Football and played apply did a lot of stuff. I never got injured but me riding a bike or like taking a jog is how I get hurt. That was my day yesterday though. Oh okay well so we have to monitor it. You have what another day to make. Sure you're good. Yeah and Caitlyn. Oh so worried. She was googling stuff all night and I was like He. Don't worry I've no no blood him opinion. Okay well I'M GONNA I'm GonNa need to see because I did. I wanted to worry. There's still a little but now I think she wants to paycheck me. Yeah you bobby you need to stay on it. I feel like this one of those weird things where people want to buy my no but you know.

That's the that's what I prefer to think of it as but viewed another way it's A person who never much left his his own circle of joy in the stadium site himself and flattered himself rate down to death. That's less of a good advertisement for oneself or this might be just you know. Some of deep learning disability taking notes notes from any scrutiny of New New York City. It's the forty fifth annual Bobby Award with your host. The judge jury and Sir Robert Bought we. Have you ever done anything yourself where you quietly think. It should win bobby lobby no are does that. Violate the very rules of the Bobby's well. It also goes to something that I just feel like I. I've been really lucky to a degree that I can't really can't quite understand. I've had a chance to go into one place after another some of them quite straight places. ABC News and Frontline places like that and I pushed it so that I could do what I like to do. which is to explore sometimes from a not particularly sophisticated place? What I'm looking at and it's fact it's sort of always been a sense sense that I've had that I must have been A little bit slower than everybody else and I felt that way and I thought well maybe what I could do is I could take that slowness and turn it into an advantage because for many subjects depending on who you are it could be ice. Hockey could be economics or it could be irregular verbs in French or whatever most people know nothing at all so if you WanNa talk about irregular verbs you might have to say. Here's what a verb is. And why why would you use the word irregular. What is irregular verb an ordinary question? And I've always done that but it's never seemed to me to be champagne of work. "New K.. It would also I was thinking about what we're well into the twenty first century. I think of myself as the twentieth century boy. I'm nineteen something. Something nineteen this nineteen. I'm fifty six hundred so to be twenty twenty. That's like well into the next one. Oh you into the twenty first. Yeah Right Okay Oh and you think of yourself as the twentieth yes I feel a little like deep keeping a foreign land called the future Robert. You're a man for all seasons. I don't but the question. Hey jaboomer on. This is radio lab so as we said at the beginning of the last episode here at the end of the month Robert will be retiring from the show. This is something that he and I have been talking about for awhile. Something we've been talking talking about with the staff for Awhile and for the last few months we've been trying to figure out As a team like how do we send him off with the right way to say goodbye and and we decided let's interview him the way he and I have interviewed thousands of people over these last seventeen years working together so I made list questions. We've written them down on your phone. I have prepared for this conversation as I would any other. I suppose that's very professionally. All these different questions about the places he likes likes to go In the city of this series of questions about Robert in dating APPs which. I'm not going to explain. But it was actually the first first question I had written down. That ended up taking us down some unexpected paths. So let me just ask you what they are. The bobby's the mob is a little bit of a cork. I decided sited at some point. We'll your name is Robert. That's right. We serve bobby that I would create an award like the Oscars which I would name after myself. Called the Bobby's obese. One was the first bobby I think it was in the early Seventies. And I was thinking of awarding things that I am the rule about the bobby's where I would have have a audience experience. I am the audience and I would then award the person who created that Experience Abi and the difference between me on the Oscars and some of the Lesser Surro- was is that I would award the creator of whenever he or she did. The act of creation was not important. It was when I consumed it so you could have a a bobby in which Judy Garland for playing a role she played in nineteen thirty. Nine would be up against somebody who played a a a movie. That was two weeks old to chow thick skin. Bobby Well Charles. Dickens would always get this caused all kinds of problems were soon as he would walk into the room with the book and all the other officer said well. I don't see why we even have to write books anymore so I would then. My wife decided that I had because I always had a very very weak Memory System. I found myself awarding things that mostly I had consumed in very end of October early. November was thanksgiving. Yeah because anything that I had seen in January February or the previous December so she's decided to give me a bobby book. Oh you brought the Bobby's book I did producers Bellhop Day and match healty had Bobby Kay bring in his bobby book. It's a black book with a red binding. It has ingold a picture of the Bobby Statue. which is Bobby With to all the winners written in it so it starts in nineteen seventy seven this this ripped pages because one of the consultants. My wife got so angry at me for not letting her be part of the deciding group that she ripped in a temper tantrum the page out which. Why didn't you let her be part of the process of Bobby Bobby and others books that so that this here is just anger frozen in time and place here? Seventy seven seems to have only winners. That doesn't seem any DESTIN's lives of a cell by Lewis. It was Thomas One book of the year still crazy after all these years by Paul. Simon Ron Song of the year friendly fire from the New Yorker by CD Bryant won best magazine Article All of the year Somebody named Hi Glen would climbing Swiss Mountain in the New Yorker won best short story of the year. And Annie Hall Woody Woody Allen Movie of the year for colored girls who considered suicide when the rainbow is not enough one. The play of the year the Ritzy Forte Award was not awarded that year Ricci Forte is the name of the Special Award for the best cartoon of the year no winners that year. Nineteen seventy seven and then nineteen in nineteen ninety years past and I would put in the winners play of the year six degrees of separation by John to all the different categories nineteen seventy-nine best this book of the year the press by a j league performance by an actress Fernanda Montenegro. Two Thousand Five A. You're a big fan of notebook. I was I cried during the notebook and I would announce them sometimes too winners themselves which was always a little bit of mixed sort of thing and then in my mind. Of course there's a red carpet and it's flush and there's there's a tremendous Paparazzi. Knew it can ask you a question via. So when you're awarding bobby's was it always to esteemed people. Was it it to the threat or could it be to just Joe. Who makes a really good could be to jog? Verdi's requiem as sung at Andy Closures Britain. This is my first cousin when he turned sixty. We rented a chorus and sang the bass part in Verdi's requiem. There wasn't the things like there's some things I give A special tribute for like kind of lifetime achievement. Award kind of thing various architects and cartoonists. And also these moments bobby there are moments in my life that year where I had a feeling of just glory or just joy or can you. Yeah let's see two two thousand in Times Square who Redwood forest that's with my wife what else is use either one says At my mother's bed April two thousand when she died. Why was that a moment for you to be like watching Jeopardy and I hired a person to take care of her that night and I walked about seven blocks and I got a phone call as she was doing really well in jeopardy and the lady who had never met my mother. I think your mother just died so I ran back and she was dead and You know that that was completely shocking. When she was sick but and she said she was kept saying? I'M GONNA die but She was into that sort of thing from at least and so there she wants she was dead. Ed and I sat on the bed looking at a wounded. Still warm and it was my mother. You know that that was a moment. The moments don't have to be like always pleasant. They can just be searing or things that you never will forget that moments before she passed away she was answering jeopardy questions correctly. That's a really great way to go shoes jeopardy nick but I don't know if I got older it gets really bit. Surreal as as it got into the into the more recent years. It gets alarming because the book DOC begins to run out of pages getting down to the last thirteen pages the same book from seventy seventy. Yeah when it gets to eighteen. The book stops like they were out of pages ages so I said to my daughter looked Nora if the bobby book ends in two thousand eighteen. Isn't it follow. Perhaps it's the night today the your father will end in two thousand eighteen so she ran to the deepest Brooklyn and found a book binder. And said could you like double all the Bobby Book and we bind it so my father could live longer so my father could live longer so now look at this. This is this is means that you're going to have to deal with me All these years you didn't add even more pages. It covers about twenty five. You might be yeah twenty by by then I'll be like ninety something so I'm I'm a twenty forty seven. I'll be one hundred so I don't think I wanna go that far so this looks just about about right actually and then have the feeling. They're happy unless I get run over by truck of like you know pretty much being a life well-lived or rather well consumed hume with all of these rewards compressing like your whole adult years until like a tiny book which makes it feel a lot shorter order and smaller than it actually was like. There's I mean that's an interesting subject to me. Like there is a fellow who invented a thing. Mathematics is heels in New Jersey at Princeton instant and he loves to just measure himself so he'll send me the number of times. He touched the letter t during the month of May on his computer. What what or the amount of hours? He slept the amount of hours of the eighth amount of hours that he showered the amount of hours that he I was on the telephone for the whole year. You know worked out and then sends me all these bar graphs and stuff but the different people you know Different people reflect differently about themselves and you know for a person who's very mathematical like this guy. It make sense to him a deep sense that he can be expressed in data points. And I don't know he feels them the way I guess a great eight mathematician loves pattern. Feel so he sees the pattern of himself in my case. This is called When I enjoyed myself extravagantly whether it was reading or going to see something or having experience or well I felt the intensity of being alive? That's a different kind kind of measure and someone else. Would you know. Write a memoir or letter to their grandchildren. Coldwell I remember when your Grandpa so there's thousands of ways to do this us and to some degree this is not most flattering. My particular form of compression. Either it's self. Help book to keep me. You know comfortable.

"Do you think the judges are extra hard on Bobby because they want him to win it, and so they want to motivate him because I mean, they are so weird to him like one week they're like, oh, and then he looks great and they're like, oh, you have terrible or whatever. They say. I something like that. I, yes, I do. I think that they see a lot of great potential in Bobby, and that's why they going to be a little tough on him. I do think that Len has been a little too tough with us on the scores, but he's a traditionalist and it does take a lot to impress him. It just means that when we get those highest goals from him, it's going to be much more worth it. But I really do think that they see something great in him and see him with the ability to go all the way because he's the whole package. He has the potential the personality in the hot. So that's what it takes. Well, let me go to fake Lynn Lynn. What do you think I need to do tonight in order to really get that score from you? Well, I think Shauna nailed it right there. Yeah, you're right. I m traditionalist, I'm going to tell you what I think. And so far seeing you do a great job. You'll have good dance. Keep it up well done and score negative five hundred. Just terrible. What did you have to say. I guess I was just going to see how you compare like we're, where are we in the season now is considered halfway or sit halfway. Grading. Like the way the judges are responding to Bobby Sharona because I feel like you have a better grip on it than like we do when they're talking. They're weird jargon that we don't understand you're looking for like, are you happy with the response to the judges and Bobby, I like that the judges enjoy Bubby like to watch him and want to see him do more. I don't think they've been hotter on other people. To be honest, I think they, they themselves have a little bit of a soft spot for Bubby to see what he's going to go. And that's again why I think they hot on him, but by no means have I seen them be mean, and I've seen them be mean wakes, oh, I think that says something like, I think she nailed it like they have a soft spot for you. Bobby. I have a soft spot in my feet. A hard hit have also. Tonight on dancing with the stars, we will be doing the waltz to the little mermaid way. Well, and Sharma will be Ariel, and I will be prince, Eric, and we will possibly kiss kiss. That's right. All right to please call him vote if you can.
