College Basketballs Uncertain Return to the Court

"I on thursday. Tupper beat six rate. Kansas ninety awesome performance and then on friday afternoon mark to the gonzaga coach. Confirm that the zags beat auburn on friday morning. Nine hundred sixty seven after a player believed to be julian straw. They're tested positive for covid. Nineteen so norlander. We're gonna get into next credible opening week on the court second. But let's start here where you surprise in an auburn still played on friday after a gonzaga player test positive. I was surprised because my opinion is that if other teams and i'm not saying all other teams but many other teams were in that situation. The game would not have been played in my opinion. If gonzaga ran into the issues it ran into and it was playing in belleville. gonzaga would not have played. It's game on friday. Gonzaga might not have even played a game against kansas or fill in the other opponent again. If you put it in. And i'm i'm speaking from what i'm seeing here and the protocols and everything that goes into place to even holding this in the state of connecticut okay. Gonzaga had a member of its travel party test positive on thursday gonzaga took two different planes to the event specific and has taken two different buses. It's it's doing specifically to guard against this. But obviously there is no full on guarding against this so we played kansas. And we'll get but then you know at least one player as positive another believed to be The players roommate is kept out as a precautionary reason. And the game goes off because and you can speak to a gp. Frankly we'll we'll get to virginia san francisco the minute but i was i was. I was watching that game. So i didn't hear fuse press conference. I've seen some of what he said. They're the relying on the florida health officials as being the ones that were to clear it and the health officials down there made that determination and it might wind up that that determination is going to be okay in the end. But i've received four text messages from coaches to heads to assistance. All of them basically asking why in the hell is gonzaga in auburn. Being allowed to play right now one of them saying if this was us there is no shot in hell that we would have been able to play and so this this is certainly captured. A little bit of attention around the college basketball world understandably so gonzaga's looked awesome. But you can make an easy argument that it that it should not have a have played the game. What are your thoughts. And then what can you share for the listeners. That might not have seen a about what few said in his postgame. Zoom press conference. Okay so mark was clearly asked about it and he said he kept it very simple. He's did we followed turns guidelines not we tournament guidelines were were in place and established. We had this positive test. And then we follow the guidelines and then the florida health officials came in and they contact tracing how they contact tracing. They told us we were okay. We were cleared to play and we play. He kept it. He didn't really expand anymore than that but listen. They didn't do anything illegal. They possibly did something irresponsible but didn't do anything illegal. They didn't act in defiance of the tournament or florida. Health officials noted that florida as a state hasn't taken covid nineteen that seriously to begin with. So what florida. Health officials were okay. Where quite clearly would be the same thing that said california. Health officials are okay. Wis lucky if they wanted to play the game. They're lucky they were in florida as opposed to to somewhere else. And you're exactly right. It's bubble ville or in south dakota. I don't believe this game would have been played. Wichita state got sent home from south dakota because they had maybe a couple of people in the travel and party test positive. They were like okay. Get outta here. You're not playing today. you're not playing tomorrow. you're not playing it off. So i don't know that this game would have been played if it were a tournament. Where you're at or in south dakota but because this was sort of a thing they put together in fort myers as long. Auburn was cool to play and gonzaga wanted to play. they were allowed to pluck. I though was surprised that the game went off. Because i mean we've seen baseball teams. Get shut down over one positive test during the major league baseball season the world series if it would have if the dodgers did not win the game justin turner had to be removed because they got a positive test back of the game so they take justin turner around. They complete that game. The understanding was that game. Seven of the world series would not have been the following night. They would not have played until everybody can test test test for a few days and they make sure it's safe to play and so yes. I was surprised that they played the game. And hopefully nothing comes from it that it doesn't end up being a quote unquote superspreader of it. Because if we an outbreak now at gonzaga because by the way gonzaga tweet video from the locker room after the victory over kansas and they're all celebrating no mask jewish authors in front of mark. Few right in the middle of the celebration. He is believed to be the one who test positive. So hopefully nothing comes of this but if we have a subsequent outbreak at gonzaga or subsequent at auburn gonzaga is going to become the biggest story in college basketball. And it's not going to be a sports story anymore. It won't be because jalen suggs looks. Incredible it'll be because they knew they positive test in their locker room and they played less than twenty four hours putting their players at risk and the auburn players at risk. I hope it doesn't come to that. But if it comes to that this becomes a bigger story than just to college basketball story. It becomes something that's on. Cbs evening news. Yeah we'll wait and see if that does happen. I mean auburn's gotta be you know held equally responsible and all of this because it opted to play the game regardless you know there was no self imposed penalty here. Handed down by bruce pearl. That was not in play on friday and so inherently like. You know the chances. Go up that you're going to potentially be infected. We don't know but it's clearly out there. I mean there are. There are no shortage of schools and athletic directors coaches. Just straight up would not play the game. So we'll wait arizona. State would not play baylor because the baylor coach tested positive. Not even a player who was who was gonna who was on the court with other players twenty four hours earlier right and that came from that even came from above. Bobby's hurley's bobby hurley's had which is the case in a lot of these instances but frankly what gonzaga auburn decided to do it. Just flies in the face of convention in college sports in professional sports that we've seen and we'll will you know we're recording this on friday afternoon. We'll wait and see what's going to happen here. Gonzaga's got some high profile games ahead and we're really enough one of them's blade baylor like if there's if there's one team that's actually going to be good with this like it's baylor. They might just play the game regardless. But we'll wait and see if either of these teams are now forced because if it gets another positive one after that like they have no choice. They're going to have to shut down for two weeks and then ask themselves if playing against auburn was really worth it you know. Was it worth it. Because now you're gonna lose these other games

Finding Positive Places Online

"Today we're talking about digital self care so nicole had come across a mention of this. This on lied. They called it a self care crawl so in trying to understand what that meant. We decided we just talk about Sort of feel good stops online feel-good places to go online since we can't really go anywhere in person right now so when you're when you're looking to just maybe blow a little steam or just have a little hit of endorphins. Where do you go online nicole. You had some. You had some ideas in mind or you have a little kind of. Yeah will i. I mean yeah so first of all the title was attractive because it may be thinking of other types of crawls around college days liver sadly lost in news core. yeah time but It actually was kind of an interesting idea. Because i thought you know when i if i have been working all day or if i've been out about or If i've been doing housework what am i kind of ways that i carve out time for myself is a computer and then i have like my favorite sites that i go to or you know things that i do is kind of like a little routine right. That's gonna wear. I can escape for a few minutes. I'm not having to shop for anybody. I'm not having to make appointments for anybody. Not having to send emails. Anybody is kinda like that little time that myself and of course you know it's like a total luxury to even dream about some of these things for example you know one of my favorite. To's is the ralph lauren website. And i liked the look at you. Know what's on that site and And then another one of my favorites doubt stops as the kate spade website so this kind of a trend right out the window shopping. But on down cle- yes that's awesome with the online. And then of course i always go to a couple of my favorite facebook groups and check out that because there's really nothing ever negative. That happens on there so that's good and In my face yeah right right kind of a little bit of a Doesn't really make sense. But yeah so i thought we could just kind of expand more on that i mean. What do i mean. I'm sure you both have some of your favorite stops online. That you that you go to or that's part of your day or your routine. So yeah kind of elaborate on the like what or do you just kinda do your work shut your computer down and then you move on. I used to have a list of really fun. Twitter accounts that i would go on and that we made a little bit of respite. I would go and see what all those people were saying. There were always funny and entertaining and then politics happened and twitter just became a surging cesspool of strife and anger. And i couldn't go there anymore because my fun little entertaining twitter people had opinions on things and whether agreed with them or not. It just made me mad. So i had to step away from twitter and facebook also friends who i used to enjoy following to see what was happening in their day day to day life also had opinions and again whether i agreed or disagreed it all just made me angry and that is not what you're looking for when you're doing your self care crawl so i found recently a combination of snoozing everybody who is melting off and joining a a facebook group that was extremely positive and extremely prolific. Pretty much gave me a safe place to go and just sort of reveling in salinas and fun. That for me was a. It's a group of fans of the bobby bones show. They call themselves the b. team. They sort of singlehandedly. Got him memorable ball trophy on dancing with the stars and they have this facebook group that they mentioned it on the show and so it grew by like i think ten thousand people over long it got very large but it's generally not one hundred percent because people are people but it's generally very positive and just go to my newsfeed now in its all be team and that's just fine q. Pictures people's kids fund things that happened on the show pictures that where they saw bobby bones at a concert as just very entertaining in very low stress and very enjoyable so that has been a real self care thing. I highly recommend snoozing all your friends. You don't wanna see right now. Look joining something where people will talk about nonsense

Bobi Wine, Uganda Opposition Leader, Released From Jail

"Bobby, one is running for president and there's blood in the streets of Uganda to wine is the activist and singer who's running against president. You are in new seven E, who's been in power since 1986. Authorities arrested Bobby Wine on Wednesday. His supporters protested and police responded brutally. The BBC and local press say that Dozens of people have been killed. Bobby Wine has just been released after several days in detention and joins us Mr One. Thanks so much for being with us again. Thank you very much good for having me and greetings to all the listeners. How are you doing? Well, I'm still alive. That's all I can say. How are you and your supporters treated in prison where we will be team and paper sprayed and looked up. We were not allowed any access to our lawyers, our families or our doctors. The government says you were arrested for breaking covert 19 laws by holding a political rally. Is that how you see it? Well, I must say the cup in 19 has been weaponized toe be used against the opposition and in particular the biggest rate off President Museveni's 34 year old group on power. While President Museveni cause around the country holding positions on holding big rallies. He is not allowing us to reach out to the people. If any of you that I was holding my campaign meeting I was left there by the police. You say police led you to the scene of this rally. Do you think they you were set up? Well, I know that person really is so scared off the support that we have the support that I personally have. He has been challenged so much, because wherever he goes, he has to pay young men and women to put on T shirts and put an image of support. Unfortunately, only side wherever I show up. Masses and masses with young people show are following us on these people are being tear gassed on targeted with life bullets. The BBC and independent. Local journalists say that a number of your supporters were apparently killed. By government forces who fired into the crowd. Do you have a message for your supporters at this moment? Possible? I send condolences to the families that have lost loved ones. Been informed as soon as I was out of jail that more than 37 young men and women wear short on killed in cold blood by the regime forces. But also I'm aware that more than 58 in critical conditions in different hospitals across the country, while more than 500 have been arrested and detained, we stand in solidarity with them. And will continue to call upon them to pay nonviolent But to be assertive, And to remember that operates people cannot be oppressed forever. We shall soon break free from the shackles of oppression. The election is January 14th. Do you worry about what could happen between now and then? Yes and no, No, I don't want it because I'm sure we will win this election. Yes, I'm worried because I know that Museveni prides himself in raking elections and this might not be an exception. That is why I call upon all you cannons to cut their foot but also call upon international community and international media to keep their eyes on the people of Uganda because This seems to be our last short at liberation. Remember, since Independence Day in 1960 to Uganda has never had a peaceful transfer of power from one leader to another. That is what we long for on that is what we are sure we're going to keep it if the entire world stands with the people of Uganda. Activist musician Bobby Wine who was continuing his campaign for president in Uganda. Thanks so much for being with us, Mr Wine. Thank is good.

"Bobbies oldest coolest bluest haired friend Jake. As embarrassed as bobby was about the ad, he was especially embarrassed. The Jake might hear it. Then he not only loses punk read, but also the respect of the person who taught him everything about music in the first place. So even though Jake and Bobby spoke every day had practice each week bobby never said a thing about the AD. But then one day jake was hanging out with billy a third member of Jagan bobbies band. Or watching the blackhawks and then all of a sudden we hear this song come on and we start kind of giggling at the song. And then, and then I was like Holy Shit. Like, best bobby he goes no no no, it's not do that is body I know bobbies. There's no one else that sounds like a mess bobby we had TV that we have the access to rewind it. So we rewind and watch this is billy and then the tagline at the very end he speaks it. Though is clearly him billy. He's like Oh my God. It is bobby and we started laughing and freaking out. Later that day they saw Bobby Jake asked about the add an his face just drops just drops and you're like, Oh my God. Don't tell anyone about this, and until this moment have you kept the promise that you made bobby have you never told anybody? I told people. Of course, bobbies best friend and bandmate was going to dine out on bobbies humiliation, and so group tax tour send links were forwarded and everyone laughed. For Body it was a huge embarrassment but the thing that's outlived that embarrassment is a lingering question. What the hell happened. If you WANNA see this on TV. You would just be like how did this happen? How did this get into my TV? How did this through? At the time, bobby was a kid in his early twenties the lowest on the ladder with no visibility into how the AD got green led. The now as an adult, he wonders who ultimately green lit the AD. And at what cost? Like I. Heard a rumor that like Tim, the make of the ad been seen like in the office of the big guy and he was like all red faced and screaming and like maybe like I started to feel like if you had worked on this commercial like you're like a pariah, it started to become like a thing like you would hear people like you guys worked on random or couch. Has Tim's Korea doing I. Don't know. I don't know I would like to know. Who is Super Super Nice Guy. He would always go low baseball hat and glasses any talk luck this like real quiet kind of stone or Read of Red Cow. This is Tim. It's all over back to me now. Unfortunately. Tim's now retired, but he was in advertising for over two decades from office Max to Budweiser. Tim's worked on tons of successful campaigns but I'm calling to talk about his least successful one. "Hundred twenty people sing the colors of the rainbow. Yeah and it was a funny thing as a funny thing to be standing up there in this beautiful church conducting all these people as they're singing and think I think all of this began with some weird moment in a studio Robert. Ask a question like your questions so often lead to the weirdest stuff. Well that's nice though right like it's like it's nice that we can. We can get loose enough to go with someone maybe has never gone before or at least we haven't gone before. Yeah I think that's really One of the things I'm going to miss is that the I mean listening to that guy who was the a five dollar bill that was a that was me sort of delivering my idea of what a you know. A twenty nine thousand nine hundred eighty nine detective Bill marlow story would be like but I kind of worked out in my head as I as I did with US I. I never knew what was going to happen happen. Really wasn't improvisation. That's what I'm GonNa Miss. Actually it's the. Yeah it's like that thing of I still can't after eighteen years. Predict what you're going to say north or what you're going to find interesting you know. Well sometimes it can insist that it's interesting you will not like snail sexist been the has been for so many years. It's it's it's wrong and and I don't know why there's something wrong with you that you don't feel that that so worth investigating. Maybe that should have been. The less developed story should have been sale sex there. I duNno without okay. We'll give me your best pitch. What is so damn interesting about snail sex every think oh? These are two ardent ardent loving loving animals. The sex is slow because they're Mafra nights so they are both male and female now. This is hard for us to understand but imagine if you were both the the male and the female and a tryst with a animal that was also a meal and a female so part of your boy part once part of their go part part of your girl part wants to avoid part of their. Oh boy part and all of this takes a lot of thinking. It's also like like who. Who's I'm going to hug you here? Do I want to hug. Don't want to be hugged down there. I am this is like in the same individual because snails are both male and female at the same time. So that's hard and then the fact that you're doing it under the sun under the sky and what was in all the trees above them the the animals that want to eat them because they have no way to protect them after leave their shells to have sex. So you're closed. You're slow it's danger. It's confusing and you do it anyway. That sounds like almost all species. It's it's especially I think when sex wanted the poster child for from the Animal Kingdom like would we're good when sex is as good as as it gets. Who knows it snails do there you did it you did it okay? So where are we going with this. I don't no no one hundred the next okay. Next category best laugh laugh. Yeah this this is. I mean we're going to give bobby for having the best laugh of all. The humans there was a there was a lot of things to laugh about. That's for sure here so I believe our announcer David. Gable has the nominees for this category the nominees for best laugh snort. Hardy left I laugh. Yuks the last with insight. I chuckled strange shorter. Natural the social laugh sent whisper laugh uncontrollable laugh while reading and coffee heart. Take download the future hard. Hi I'm the future at heart. I was supported by talk. You presenting to you. The future hit hard in Washington New York City More says so little so badly but we will try again trying to get mice over here. Hi I'm Robert Krulwich. Radio lab is supported by target presenting It's that in your system. Have trouble reading copy of God so that last one was our winner. But but do you know something about the laughs So like back in the early days of the show so much of the show was being put together in the got it. And what what we'd end up having is like chunk of robert-jan Conversation Chunk of Chad Conversation Chunk of Robert jet conversation. There'd be these big gaps between them and we would need to replace with other conversations and so I would scratch in the connecting tissue which occasionally like would would mean having to say something that you would that you would chuckle too a react to so what we did at a certain point is we. We went through a bunch of interviews comb through plucked out a bunch of your reactions and laughs and various these things and put all of them into a folder. So I've had this folder of your laughs for about ten years. Yeah and I have a full of your left. They have folder of affirmative reactions negative reactions if yeses knows Oh my God. I have a whole folder of those but I would take your laughs like when I was editing really late at night and I was really stuck in I was very disheartened as one gets at one. AM when you're trying to make it work and it's just not working and I would just I would put all your laughs tunes and I've just played back to back and it would cheer me up really. Yeah I would. It would cheer me up and it would make it would remind me that we are making a conversation because sometimes you forget at that. When you're editing you you start to make very nice to know so? A Denver is very very important therapeutic laughing folder. Yeah so I think what we're GONNA do We don't have a ton left to do but I think we're going to do is take a quick break and then come back back and finish the awards with a bang okay.

"Came into the room. I smell trouble this Damon a nose like a toothpick on a face like and she was tough. She was smart and she had a problem. I could tell I'm a private I. I told her I had nothing time lady. I got nothing but time she took out a five five dollar. Bill laid it on my desktop. Smooth it out real flat and then she spoke. He's he has a five dollar. Bill could see it was and I said so lady I can see that she took a long drag on her silver in. I got a whiff of Chanel. Look check. She called me chuck though. My name isn't chuck but I like that. A woman chat. I like privacy. Yeah I got an unpublished Bush number. Yeah I got an unpublished address. Yeah I got blanked plates from my Bentley Sue. What's going on this is what those lark could? You sounded like to me like okay so only one discover three quarters of the way through through this. The the whole piece is about some mysterious secret message in a judge in the Bush yes some non tobacco sometime dollar ninety two yes. There was numbers written on the Bush. Yes at the Lincoln Memorial. There was a theory that the artists you know. The bureau of engraving hires humans artist artists to design it and so I was tipped or must've read in the collector's magazine. Who knows that that the five dollar bill contained a secret number and all I had to do is look for for it and when I was shown where it was I couldn't not see it? It was always there. So that's a perfect radio story. You get make everybody listening. You take their five dollar bill and see thing they will see because I saw it but it wasn't actually a number on the back of I'm guessing you choose. No you use one piece in a in a five and a half minute story you use one six second bit of tape of some actual person who is looking at the at the five dollar bill not seeing the number or not seeing not seeing the number he sees a different set of numbers in UC argue. About what numbers are there which leads me to it. Wasn't it wasn't wasn't as obvious as I remember. Now that it was maybe a disadvantage. 'CAUSE that was like forty thirty five years ago but But what's amazing about this is that it's it's so entire like the whole point of it seems to be for you. All those doesn't sleep see also. It was a chance I guess for me to make a film noir like of my own I could just make one for myself. I just think that's amazing that you're you're You Go. I don't even know what the story is about until three quarters of the way through. But I'm still riveted. Yeah well I think it's a little magical to me when you listen to. NPR these days to Remember that would national public radio started. It a wasn't much listen to wasn't highly esteemed that's very important and we didn't have any money Those three things put together. I may have ninety minute show to do every single day and there were things that we used to do on. All things considered that you know. I don't think would I think they would make people's people poop in their pants if they heard from now the next category best improvisation position because one donald things are I one of the things that I will always see. I always have such a cliche. I think we would do. We could do the best blooper real of any show in history of media but mostly when you get on when you catch a win on some thing like Dan. Dan Dan delory order now. Dan Dan Dailey. What is it done? Dorrell the Danny or something there was I feel so relieved that you have to endure some release those tickets. Maybe you're like terenure. You know when you here too many consonants though you just can't get them out of your head and just repeat them in poor jealous listens to them in the studio over and over again better yet we went there. They're immortalized fantasia. Save some of them. So I think that the One of the nominees is a constant pile up battle between Bethel talk with Bethlehem Beauty Libido Birds Baobab throat clearing singing. He because he bothered certain they have their own company needed to do that. Was the line China family business. Will the winner in this category I believe is a slinky credits slinky round. It's very thanks. Big thanks to Steve Stroke outs professor of mathematics at University of Colorado. which is not really where he is teaching? 'cause it's called Cornell but it's So see Colleges Connecticut Kid and Connecticut College Community Community of Kansas. which is to see the see kind of Kansas? Those are all the colleges we'd like to think of as the big C C is for cookie. Okay that's good enough for me. I'm Robert Koehler. Big As the Steve Jobs. That's who is a professor fester of mathematics at Cornell University. His new book is called the big x joy of the joy of X.. which is like the joy of sex? But it's missing using the S. and the and the fun and the sex and the sex but you get the last letter which which is of course the only thing that really matters many copulating couples said at the end just before the cigarette. I really like expert. I think we all agree with that. That's right so so. Let's the joy of joys bax big. Thanks to Steve Stroke who is a professor of mathematics at Cornell University in New York and he is the author of a new book called the joy a of x and to the slinky company manufacturers of fine coiled objects worldwide. Here Don. Everyone local target stores. That you weird. Yeah good so. That was the winner in the category of the best. Improvisation okay so in the next category this one is I think a little bit more pertinent to the spirit of the show. Best last question to to set this one up. You've heard me say this before one of the most kind of amazing mazing qualities of working with you is that you always consistently ask a question that I would never think to ask but then suddenly you must know the answer to and in this case it was one of these things that you threw out in the middle of an interview and it became the basis for the best loved moment in our most downloaded show of all time. Oh this is the shrimp the shrimp so we were. We were talking to this scientists asking him all these questions about how we perceive color. And how color is sort of outside of us and yet we only make sense of internally and in the middle of this interview just tossed out A to. Here's a question. If a dog and the human and a crow were to be staring wearing a rainbow. Would they be seeing very different. Things knows it. Yeah I remember that I was just like I remember the there. Was that when you ask that question. All of a sudden.

"In my old age on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. That's the that's what I prefer to think of it as but viewed another way it's A person who never much left his his own circle of joy in the stadium site himself and flattered himself rate down to death. That's less of a good advertisement for oneself or this might be just you know. Some of deep learning disability taking notes notes from any scrutiny of New New York City. It's the forty fifth annual Bobby Award with your host. The judge jury and Sir Robert Bought we. Have you ever done anything yourself where you quietly think. It should win bobby lobby no are does that. Violate the very rules of the Bobby's well. It also goes to something that I just feel like I. I've been really lucky to a degree that I can't really can't quite understand. I've had a chance to go into one place after another some of them quite straight places. ABC News and Frontline places like that and I pushed it so that I could do what I like to do. which is to explore sometimes from a not particularly sophisticated place? What I'm looking at and it's fact it's sort of always been a sense sense that I've had that I must have been A little bit slower than everybody else and I felt that way and I thought well maybe what I could do is I could take that slowness and turn it into an advantage because for many subjects depending on who you are it could be ice. Hockey could be economics or it could be irregular verbs in French or whatever most people know nothing at all so if you WanNa talk about irregular verbs you might have to say. Here's what a verb is. And why why would you use the word irregular. What is irregular verb an ordinary question? And I've always done that but it's never seemed to me to be champagne of work. "New K.. It would also I was thinking about what we're well into the twenty first century. I think of myself as the twentieth century boy. I'm nineteen something. Something nineteen this nineteen. I'm fifty six hundred so to be twenty twenty. That's like well into the next one. Oh you into the twenty first. Yeah Right Okay Oh and you think of yourself as the twentieth yes I feel a little like deep keeping a foreign land called the future Robert. You're a man for all seasons. I don't but the question. Hey jaboomer on. This is radio lab so as we said at the beginning of the last episode here at the end of the month Robert will be retiring from the show. This is something that he and I have been talking about for awhile. Something we've been talking talking about with the staff for Awhile and for the last few months we've been trying to figure out As a team like how do we send him off with the right way to say goodbye and and we decided let's interview him the way he and I have interviewed thousands of people over these last seventeen years working together so I made list questions. We've written them down on your phone. I have prepared for this conversation as I would any other. I suppose that's very professionally. All these different questions about the places he likes likes to go In the city of this series of questions about Robert in dating APPs which. I'm not going to explain. But it was actually the first first question I had written down. That ended up taking us down some unexpected paths. So let me just ask you what they are. The bobby's the mob is a little bit of a cork. I decided sited at some point. We'll your name is Robert. That's right. We serve bobby that I would create an award like the Oscars which I would name after myself. Called the Bobby's obese. One was the first bobby I think it was in the early Seventies. And I was thinking of awarding things that I am the rule about the bobby's where I would have have a audience experience. I am the audience and I would then award the person who created that Experience Abi and the difference between me on the Oscars and some of the Lesser Surro- was is that I would award the creator of whenever he or she did. The act of creation was not important. It was when I consumed it so you could have a a bobby in which Judy Garland for playing a role she played in nineteen thirty. Nine would be up against somebody who played a a a movie. That was two weeks old to chow thick skin. Bobby Well Charles. Dickens would always get this caused all kinds of problems were soon as he would walk into the room with the book and all the other officer said well. I don't see why we even have to write books anymore so I would then. My wife decided that I had because I always had a very very weak Memory System. I found myself awarding things that mostly I had consumed in very end of October early. November was thanksgiving. Yeah because anything that I had seen in January February or the previous December so she's decided to give me a bobby book. Oh you brought the Bobby's book I did producers Bellhop Day and match healty had Bobby Kay bring in his bobby book. It's a black book with a red binding. It has ingold a picture of the Bobby Statue. which is Bobby With to all the winners written in it so it starts in nineteen seventy seven this this ripped pages because one of the consultants. My wife got so angry at me for not letting her be part of the deciding group that she ripped in a temper tantrum the page out which. Why didn't you let her be part of the process of Bobby Bobby and others books that so that this here is just anger frozen in time and place here? Seventy seven seems to have only winners. That doesn't seem any DESTIN's lives of a cell by Lewis. It was Thomas One book of the year still crazy after all these years by Paul. Simon Ron Song of the year friendly fire from the New Yorker by CD Bryant won best magazine Article All of the year Somebody named Hi Glen would climbing Swiss Mountain in the New Yorker won best short story of the year. And Annie Hall Woody Woody Allen Movie of the year for colored girls who considered suicide when the rainbow is not enough one. The play of the year the Ritzy Forte Award was not awarded that year Ricci Forte is the name of the Special Award for the best cartoon of the year no winners that year. Nineteen seventy seven and then nineteen in nineteen ninety years past and I would put in the winners play of the year six degrees of separation by John to all the different categories nineteen seventy-nine best this book of the year the press by a j league performance by an actress Fernanda Montenegro. Two Thousand Five A. You're a big fan of notebook. I was I cried during the notebook and I would announce them sometimes too winners themselves which was always a little bit of mixed sort of thing and then in my mind. Of course there's a red carpet and it's flush and there's there's a tremendous Paparazzi. Knew it can ask you a question via. So when you're awarding bobby's was it always to esteemed people. Was it it to the threat or could it be to just Joe. Who makes a really good could be to jog? Verdi's requiem as sung at Andy Closures Britain. This is my first cousin when he turned sixty. We rented a chorus and sang the bass part in Verdi's requiem. There wasn't the things like there's some things I give A special tribute for like kind of lifetime achievement. Award kind of thing various architects and cartoonists. And also these moments bobby there are moments in my life that year where I had a feeling of just glory or just joy or can you. Yeah let's see two two thousand in Times Square who Redwood forest that's with my wife what else is use either one says At my mother's bed April two thousand when she died. Why was that a moment for you to be like watching Jeopardy and I hired a person to take care of her that night and I walked about seven blocks and I got a phone call as she was doing really well in jeopardy and the lady who had never met my mother. I think your mother just died so I ran back and she was dead and You know that that was completely shocking. When she was sick but and she said she was kept saying? I'M GONNA die but She was into that sort of thing from at least and so there she wants she was dead. Ed and I sat on the bed looking at a wounded. Still warm and it was my mother. You know that that was a moment. The moments don't have to be like always pleasant. They can just be searing or things that you never will forget that moments before she passed away she was answering jeopardy questions correctly. That's a really great way to go shoes jeopardy nick but I don't know if I got older it gets really bit. Surreal as as it got into the into the more recent years. It gets alarming because the book DOC begins to run out of pages getting down to the last thirteen pages the same book from seventy seventy. Yeah when it gets to eighteen. The book stops like they were out of pages ages so I said to my daughter looked Nora if the bobby book ends in two thousand eighteen. Isn't it follow. Perhaps it's the night today the your father will end in two thousand eighteen so she ran to the deepest Brooklyn and found a book binder. And said could you like double all the Bobby Book and we bind it so my father could live longer so my father could live longer so now look at this. This is this is means that you're going to have to deal with me All these years you didn't add even more pages. It covers about twenty five. You might be yeah twenty by by then I'll be like ninety something so I'm I'm a twenty forty seven. I'll be one hundred so I don't think I wanna go that far so this looks just about about right actually and then have the feeling. They're happy unless I get run over by truck of like you know pretty much being a life well-lived or rather well consumed hume with all of these rewards compressing like your whole adult years until like a tiny book which makes it feel a lot shorter order and smaller than it actually was like. There's I mean that's an interesting subject to me. Like there is a fellow who invented a thing. Mathematics is heels in New Jersey at Princeton instant and he loves to just measure himself so he'll send me the number of times. He touched the letter t during the month of May on his computer. What what or the amount of hours? He slept the amount of hours of the eighth amount of hours that he showered the amount of hours that he I was on the telephone for the whole year. You know worked out and then sends me all these bar graphs and stuff but the different people you know Different people reflect differently about themselves and you know for a person who's very mathematical like this guy. It make sense to him a deep sense that he can be expressed in data points. And I don't know he feels them the way I guess a great eight mathematician loves pattern. Feel so he sees the pattern of himself in my case. This is called When I enjoyed myself extravagantly whether it was reading or going to see something or having experience or well I felt the intensity of being alive? That's a different kind kind of measure and someone else. Would you know. Write a memoir or letter to their grandchildren. Coldwell I remember when your Grandpa so there's thousands of ways to do this us and to some degree this is not most flattering. My particular form of compression. Either it's self. Help book to keep me. You know comfortable.

"The red and the white sox are accumulating a lot of prosperity lot now for the pitching in the the other players we assume they're going to deal before the end of the month but chris sale has been worth it so far this is david price has very much struggled in socks uniform chris sale six and one at fenway with a 234 pera so saturday a 405 start that that a tough match up for anyone including the yankees lineup against chris sale let's head out to west hampton kimberly it's dan it's the van what's going on dan berry guys guard for safer for the card in gregor craig gregory morning and you got going on job also a shout out to chris ruether with the wrong card alum and i am wanted glow you can him in a good luck on mature waiter however what i was calling about orcas entertainment so here we are every morning we you really get in for sport few everything and thank god yankees apart up clear prospects that we can all be interested uh but you guys being internal the nutrient fumigated imagination the what are going on all of you you think enough to save baseball or footballer whatever professional sport you have one on a monday night or tuesday night whatever game of thrones comes on who going to watch game of thrones verses judge or by or or whatever the player of the week or year so you guys talk about that like internally the future for petrol fort mcpherson i've entertainment industry um and also kind of like the way you guys have been talking about how electron of gamed come on and are competing par you're calling up emotion uh the question really is about worked with entertainment though did have a future.

"The break um it's kind of heart her for some this which show i did and and with whom but i but i'm pretty sure you and i chatted and you look at both the mets and yankees for very different reasons thinking when a theories before the break for the yankees win their first series and what you twelve right if now been more than a month since they've won a series win that series they didn't they couldn't get it done against the brewers ended disappointing theories at yankee stadium and no matter what they did against the brewers this was going to be a really important for games it's at least as important now yes can you win a fourgame series of course you can buy nature of it it's not as easy not as easy out of four and that's tough to do against anyone let alone at fenway against a good red sox team and then the road trip continues for the yankees so this eleven games stretcher sell out of the break really important to the yankees to get back on the winning track get back to winning series and also the tone set as the trade deadline nears right and how aggressive cashman and how careful is he going to be calm some of the mlb trade deadline and where this team is standing in it it's gonna be i'd be hard pressed to if i go into the series kim i'd be hard that the the ecu take three or four i'd love to see if they come out of it with a split of i think that's good you don't wanna go one in three jer but it's it's hard to win a double header number one number two is the red sox have just been i'm playing better baseball going into it now we'll see how they come out of it if they come out of fenway park where you get maybe a judge moment egat said she has more made they play a little bit better batanes this throws the ball lot better coming out of the bullpen and they show a little bit of a sign a life that their turn around the split the four games i'd be okay with that if i'm a yeah and the yankees of course the see lefties to open theory is i tell you a sales been the i know they gave up a lot for him and.

"Chips i'm excited to see the young kids come up and i believe much here is gonna be our year are so whatever happened this year i think there's applause and it is exciting to go to the game young kid thank you for taking my call thank you know moves i've had i've heard several callers to the fan this week gun shows i've done i probably inch as i've listened to as well mentioned the idea almost like cautionary like don't do it yankees don't trade the great prospects i actually don't think there's even a chance they will i don't think there's any chance big afraid the ones they value the most which would be the blue chip prospects are they going to trade prospects you would think they will have to to get something in return here but i don't think it's going to be one of these deals where you know on august ten were sitting here sane man i can't believe frazier's now you know on the west coast i i can't believe sanchez in judge aren't here there's no chance that the biggest chance adams there is no chance chance is gone chance no chance i i would agree with that and i think willie at the end of the conversation hit upon something interesting kim i this offseason if the yankees season continues in this path where there are contender young players play well we've seen a lot of them the offseason and the tisza patient for two thousand eighteen right for yankee baseball will be it'll oh level we we have not seen a quite some time where you look at judge frazier tore as maybe a healthy bird put him aside said chairs depending on what they do when the offseason there wasn't a lot expectations coming into this year the expectations based on how are the young players played this year is going to ramp up to two thousand eighteen yeah i think if they're now though i do i think the yankee fan is taking the long view i think the yankee vanished saint don't break the bank don't break up the prospects now for for something this season because this season as the building block i think that excitement sorry there let's it out to huntington it's richie it's the.

"The cover of sports illustrated and when he got drafted and when i initially saw brice harper said what's a start baseball player and i said the same thing when i see era judge i'm not comparing him to lebron james alex rodriguez did and kim an ioc not saying he's a better player than mike trout were talking about the fact of the face of baseball is he a guy that that rob manfred can can really get this you know build up the popularity even though people showing up at the ballpark but be one of the guys that is is the the selling point for major league baseball moving forward and the answer yes he is going to be one of those guys being honest with you as i always am i don't really care the face of baseball as i do think baseball is so regional right that it can be different in different areas and i understand the yankees and they transcend reach in nature france and this country but i don't really care that much about that here's what i do know though on monday night when brace harper wasn't part of the home run derby i don't believe mike trout was even in miami now he's not healthy net i or stand i believe he go to the authorized by right by don't believe use visit berra's i was there right and manny machado was in the stands because his brotherinlaw within the game and he's one of the three best players in this league by most people's definitions when he's having his trademark season he is having manny machado said in an awful c he fell off the cliff and you don't know why but when those three aren't involved and they're sick the event is a complete success and people are mystified not mystified was the word i'm looking for mesmerized by what they are seen it was because of aaron judge yes aaron judge does to some degree stand on his own now you don't have to believe that he's the bad face a baseball and you certainly don't have to buy into a lebron james comparison which i do not right it's it's done as it doesn't work i don't think doesn't were on james lace will but what aaron judge has done has been spectacular and.

"And cashman recalibrated he said okay let's see what we can go out there and do rebuild the farm system be better through the draft drafted developed guys and and understanding after the elles berry miss kim to say we're we're going to go out in last year realistically make the decision miller chapman we're not a win now team let's see exactly what they can get forum and they make it to pieces and toro's and frazier added that deal maybe sheffield works out the lefty as well but at least two of those guys potentially could be answers for this team for the next ten years potentially they also set a goal and an objective that they could meet and that was to get under the luxury tax so they were about the future even while still trying to win but they knew that the better days ahead with that tax our great great great days to come for the new york yankees they are because they've done it with young players now where when they spend again they can really really pick and choose and they can really help a roster that has already promising it is athletic it is fun to watch it is versatile i love a tyler wade who we don't talk about necessarily when we talk about the frazier's and the judges and the sanchezes to me he is the kind of peace that can help any team in baseball because he has speed right he has speed and he could put a number of all different spots eh the yankees and they'll spend money and free agents always look at the igc to try and get as much money they accused or are afraid to spend but there are gonna be our guys a free agent pitchers they're going to say i want to pitch they're churn i want to pay for that the i want those guys to play a backer me i want to be part of this i want to get paid by also yankees are going to be a very very appealing destination to if everything works out i know it's it's an if but if it all works out hackensack new jersey sam the fair what's going on every morning owner anything i i think it could.

"The neck up that goes into bean great there's a mental component let's head out to let's head out to north arlington kimberly it's james it's the fairways garage james your program under nick i mean uh because we here you're talking about the there but you're talking about james or the denver corker the organization in a winning green waiting or i go in order to purchase organization say that won't did you catch that limo winning record weren't even when they lose gray went to a identity argued i mean i guess and therefore making it harder to win a harder to reorganize who well achieve hollywood james's referring to is what what we probably call the culture mussa and i think there is the idea that when you have a winning i now when you think kahgar confused guided jeff it's early friday stay on but when he will hold sure that you can overcome some things you can under overcome a bad contract a bad season a bad stretch bad pitching you know you have it in you to win so you end up reverting back to who you are and when you when you do of the bad culture when you do of the losing culture i should say i do think there has to be that turnaround however painful and slow it may be to become a winner we gotta fumigate you've got to the bad you gotta get make some tough decision some tough personnel decisions and you've got to change the phone focus on the mindset the he's recalibrated cashman recalibrated and they were still relevant be as there were stolen above five hundred team were they bottomed out there are teams that bottom out where the houston astros the bottom that were they were getting zero point zero ratings on television whether readily unwatchable just a godawful baseball team and they were a bad watch for what they were doing was they were building up assets there were having high draft choices there are trying to build through the draft bill through the international signing period and everything and the like the keys when they bottomed out here they were still somewhat relevant they were not a bad baseball team issues that they weren't a very watch aboard exciting team.
