"Was born into a family of dodger and giant fans. Mother was a die hard dodger fan because of Jackie Robinson. My Dad was a giants fan because Willie mays and the giants and dodgers. Where're rifles this particular game? Involved this rabid rivalry between the dodgers and the giants. There was no love lost between these teams. They were playing for money. They needed to win. The world series shares. They wanted to get to the series and going back into the eighteen. Hundreds there was a sort of a whole late of famous fights involving the two teams and from baseball point of view leading up to the game. It was perfect. It was perfectly scripted. The New York giants have been thirteen and a half games behind the Brooklyn dodgers in August. They went on this historic run. They won thirty seven of forty four. Something almost unprecedented and they tied them with just a few games left in the season and they went sort of back and forth. They enter this three game playoff. And of course entering the bottom of the ninth inning. The giants were losing by three. Runs and Bobby Thomson hits the home run. And they win Perhaps the most amazing thing about Russ.

"The Heidi game with you speaking of raiders jets. Did you ever hear of the Heidi game? I know. Okay. With the old Walt Disney and took it off the air, and then crazy comeback. But yeah, I mean, that's that was the difference between having just the two stations, and it was NBC and CBS Ray carrying the games and they had commitment. So Walt Disney seven thirty Walt Disney's going on. That's it doesn't matter if the game's going late from wherever and crashed the switchers a crash the operating boards at the phone station. Wow. That is why I knew it was just people going. Are you kidding me? What's going on? Just now do you remember back in Nutley? Viola brothers construction company. You know, I I don't want to say, but I the name and again and Frank viola the pitcher, but if I only yes and growing up in Fairfield, New Jersey and Nutley New Jersey. Italian neighborhoods. And my dad in Benson hers Brooklyn in Italian neighborhood. Now, Dave also a Brooklyn guy. But my dad our last name is Thompson without a P T H O M S O N. And of course, when my dad's growing up because my dad passed away in two thousand ten but he was born in nineteen twenty seven so baseball was it. It was the Mets Yankees and the dodgers Yankees dodgers and giants. And that's of course, coming since. But the giants and the dodgers. I mean, they go at it almost every year to see who would be the sacrificial lamb for the Yankees. Right. The making fifty five year dodgers actually wanted but fifty one on October third nineteen fifty one which was my great aunt birthday and their my dad's hanging at their apartment and Bentsen hers Brooklyn, and we're listening to the game. And Bobby Thomson comes up and hits the home run off Ralph ranking, but we spell our last name the same way that Bobby Thomson spells without the P T H O S on and my dad's like freaking out. He's gone. I hate that guy. By any? He's like, I hate Ralph Branca Campbell. He punches a hole in my in. My great aunts wall in the back room and stuff and he's apologizing but he's like he's hands. Plea needing carries. Like, I can't believe it. Which is like, it's torture. I can't what am I gonna start? Putting a in his last name anytime he wrote his name after that. He start putting impeach because he didn't want his talent. But he's to kick his butt because he spelt his name the same way as Bobby Thompson that just burning the shot heard around the world, tell areas crazy stuff. Good stuff with Tom viola a young town. We're going to get a little bit more insight on Thomas and how he made it out here to Vegas making Vegas home. "Everything they did. And I think that's part of the medallion legacy is. You don't talk about the list that they made it was a day. She was reaching for the stars. But that mindset, I think helped pave the way for for what came the twenty ten. Yeah. No doubt about that. And of course, he'll be the latest edition of the giants wall of fame on February ninth. And what's crazy to me about this whole thing Daniela's? This goes all the way back to the New York Giants in his childhood keeping the team in the bay area because he had already experienced as a kid what it was like to lose the team you love when I moved to San Francisco. Right. I mean, he grew up watching the Bobby Thompson vulnera- the shot heard round the world of the World Series against the dodgers. And that's kind of pinpoint the moment. He became a baseball fan was that Bobby Thomson home runs, and then they ripped your heart out by moving to San Francisco. So he saw what it does to the fans communities. Know, he knows what a baseball team means to a city beyond the crowds. Come every night. He knows that part of the fiber of the experiences. Growing up in San Francisco is having the giants around. So it was important that it was important for him to save his own memories with the likes of maize McCovey shell, and you know, even Bobby Thompson, he came out to the ballpark on more than one occasion for various reunions. If they had the fifty four team the surviving members of that fifty four World Series team. They came out one year. He very good about establishing relations with those guys and making sure they were they were treasured. Yeah. And it's just like just seems like such commonplace now Daniel, but that's because that's how he wanted it. And he and he created that environment. And I mean seriously, it's it's just it's so just a common practice to go to the art and see these legends out there and see statues and actually get to see the people and hear their voices. And that's why I think a lot of. This even this current era of giants fans still had that affection for Willie McCovey in that outpouring when he passed away. It's just everybody got a chance to get to know him. And that was a lot of the work that Peter McGowan did how Peter McGowan preserved giant's history. And why one hall of Famer calls in one of the best men? I've ever known great piss piece in the athletic by Daniel Brown. Hey last one for you, Dan. And I appreciate you coming on for a few minutes tonight. Other than all the things you wrote about so so eloquently in this article what else should we know about Peter McGowan? And what should we remember about? Good question. I liked him. He just we've covered enough owners. To kind of they feel most owners step it for me. They're in a different strategy or they're in different worlds too much money. The fan experience with mccowan always felt like a baseball fan to me. And if you stopped about something other than territorial rights, so what the payroll next year. Like he wanted to talk baseball all the time, and he just lit up. When you ask them about your Miller one Mary shell or anybody from back in the day. He would light up, and I think there was a little kid in him that having saw we've seen another guy who owned or who sports franchise. Yeah. That's great, man. And I love that anecdote right at the top when he's rolling in with Willie Mays Eddie t park a few years back in one fan said. Oh my God. Look, it's Peter McGowan that which is terrific, man. But that's just perspective right there. I mean, you know, clearly, it was mission accomplished with packbell than AT and T park now oracle park, whatever the hell, they're calling it. But I mean that park really does embody like the old feel of a traditional ballpark. But then a lot of the modern amenities. I mean that that is far and away I've been to probably fifteen ballparks in in the United States and Florida way, and I've been to Wrigley field have Danny. I'm a cubs fan. I've been to Wrigley field. And I put going to a game at AT and T right up there with the likes of a Wrigley field or something like that. It's incredible. Yeah. That's incredible. How they built soul into a new facility is a marvel. Yep. No doubt about it. Amen. Appreciate your time. Go out there and see. Kevin durant? Snap a few selfish. All right. Okay. For sure. Time Daniel Daniel Brown. Yeah. Sorry about that noise. Like, we just had to get out there for the top, man. He's down there at the boys and Girls Club tonight as I'm taping. This a little bit earlier waiting for Kevin Durant to arrive, but really cool piece man, and you know, guys like Peter McGowan their their contribution to sport in the bay area. You know, I mean do when you have a huge fan and keeping a franchise like the giants here. I mean think about it two thousand and two thousand ten twenty twelve twenty fourteen Barry Bonds chasing, the home run record. None of this stuff happens. If he doesn't do what he did to keep this team here. And I mean, really in my family, you know, my mom worked for Safeway for what forty years before. She retired. My dad worked for Safeway. My first job was a courtesy clerk at Safeway. My sister's first job was clerk at Safeway. So I learned about Peter McGowan a long time ago, and the most important thing that I think he did was bring the stars back, man. And I mean getting Orlando Cepeda that campaign. To get him into the hall of fame, which ultimately I came up just a little short on his last year. But the veterans committee kinda picked up the slack there and got him in there. And just I mean, it was nothing dude. I mean there I was in an elevator. I mean, there's Willie Mays or Landau Cepeda. They there's Willie McCovey. And you just you never knew who you you're going to see you still never know who you're going to see at the ballpark. And now, we think that that's just the way the giants do things, you know, taking care of the alumni and making sure that forever giant. I mean, that's a real thing. And you know, Larry bears made sure to continue that. And that was a lot of the foundation that that McGowan laid and so it's an indelible Mark. And of course, he'll be going onto the giants. Wall of fame on February ninth. We're really looking forward to fan fest. I'll be out there. I'm not sure exactly what capacity I'm going to be out there yet. But I'm sure I'll be doing something. I'm just waiting on my orders my marching orders. But I'll be ready to go in whatever capacity is required. And I appreciate Daniel Brown. And I talked to him a little bit off the air for a few minutes, and he's pretty fired up about moving over to the athletic. And the same thing he tells me about the athletic is when all the guys who have moved over to the athletic. If told me we get to write longer form articles on some word count restriction are pieces. Don't get hacked up by our editor. And it's it just makes for such better reading because look we're sports fans man's. I don't want to be on some, you know, couple hundred word count restrictions. Like, I want to get the whole story, man. And I've got an extra couple of minutes. If I'm gonna take the time to click on an article and read it doesn't really bother me if it's two minutes or five minutes, I want to be able to to to really get the whole story. And really, no sense. Athletic commercial here. But hey, man, I know what I like all right? And and that's definitely the kind of journalism than I respond to you. All right. It's Kamiar tonight. Former five eight eight candy are is the number anybody out there have any interaction with Peter McGowan. And when you think of the name Peter McGowan, what does it mean to you want to go ahead, and let us know at Ryan Kobe on Twitter. It's game tonight. You're listening to these sports there. KNB are.

"The Harbaugh's podcast. There's one thing. I have to do as go over here. I'm going to walk over here. Pick up this baseball and you see on our shelf air. There's a ton of baseball Olin. Ryan baseball. Bob feller baseball. Lou Boudreau baseball. Tony LaRussa baseball. I mean, some of the one baseball here. That's unbelievable wire baseball here. Ralph Bronco bracket. Yup. And the other one's Bobby Thompson sign the bay same baseball sat around the world. The one was in one thousand nine hundred fifty one fifty one Bobby Thomson hit the home run all Ralph Branko. So that baseball is up there. But the one I have in a hand is not any of those types of name. This is a guy named Bugsy ward. Now, you may say tell me the story of Bugsy ward Bugsy ward is but two or three years ago. One of the highlights really in my career. We're down at the Detroit Tigers and lakeland Florida. It was a exhibition game the second exhibition game of the year, and we went down and they asked if I would throw. Out the first ball. So I said by golly, I'd love to love to be able to stand on that mountain. I came out at lakeland merchant field down there where gates Brown played out k-line at walked on that field. What a tremendous thrill. So I'm out there and the announcer, ladies and gentlemen to throw out the first pitch from the university of Michigan Jack Harbaugh I thought to myself. Golly. That's the way. Maybe Bob feller felt you know, and Denny MacLaine. Mickey lowly stood on that mound. Then I did something very, very wise. I moved off the top of the smart to the flatter. And I'm looking into throw the pitch and all at once. Wow. What if you bounce it in there? I mean how and I want you to know their head to be at least fifteen people in the stands at this point of time. Wasn't a lot of people, but still it was always there or throat over his over his head hit the mascot as he walked by as we've seen in some some other things and the catch us down there. He crouch down there. And I thought to myself. I don't know this is, but it's got to be somebody that that wind up and I don't throw it real hard. 'cause I don't wanna pull that thing and get into ground. So I just kinda lobbed it in a little lollipop and a nice little help in it. Catch your caught it, and then I jumped to match. Wow. It may not have been a strike, but it was off the ground got there. He might an nice catching. I felt so good. And I thought to myself I've seen this. So often fact I remember Jim throughout the first pitch over in in Detroit. And Brad asthma's the manager had come out and caught the ball. And Jim went up and he gave him the ball. And then I think Brad might assign something for him. So that's the way you're supposed to do it. So I felt I had to do what what the big guys do. So I came out and Bugsy ward signed the ball for me. I don't know where Bugsy is today. But I watch it. Oh, Bugsy you are highlighted in the Harbaugh basement as being the man that caught. That maybe not a strike, but it didn't get to home plate. The ball is here. I did a softball one time softball first pitch at U of M A few years ago and also nervous fourth game. I did the same thing. So I actually wound up in the bullpen and one of the pitchers get gave me a couple of hints tips, and I actually practiced the day before because we were part of the softball cat. It didn't matter. I was nervous. I same thing. Going far the circle, but I did a pretty decent wind up. I had a pitch. I could show you pictures. Sometimes I have a couple of stills, and it was basically a strike..
