"All right folks. Back. brushback I'm your co host. Dan. Joined by. To Chicago on today I are predictable coast. Bobby Stevens is here bobby. Hello. Hello Dam. And then Robert we've got another Chicago Guess I'll let you introduce them. Who Do we got here today we've got the owner creator of at catcher capital Mike Falsity former pro. how many years Mike five years years. Five years any ball. So we had to bring Mike on because as the podcast catching experts, I needed a little backup. So I had I had to bring Mike on. To diversify little bit. Often, help lead to help. Other kids hard to carry the weight of the Catcher of the catching roll out in the morning brushback all the time. So night it's tough for sure. Thanks for thanks. Thanks for coming on Mike. Bobby always needs the help. As you know so. but Mike, all right I want to jump in. So I, started on a mini catching twitter war few months back. But I want to jump into immediately is the one knee catching fad that is sweeping the nation. A catchers at all levels putting one the and the ground because they're too lazy to squat on their. Feet. Were yet mike. Heidi Heidi how should we be catching? How should I as a soon to be men's league professional catcher be setting up Overall. The idea works because it makes it easier to block the ball. Ball. They. You're already down on the ground a big reason why they're doing it as well as for the catcher themselves feel lower to the ground to feel lower to the ground. You'RE GONNA learn more underneath the ball as you're catching, the ball makes for A. More chance to catch cleanly. But? I believe that the number one thing it does is reduced range for catcher. Defined, defined, range range, moving left and right basically. I've done it. Myself. I never did it. I was always a traditional stance guy my oh career That's how I was always taught. I was always taught. There's Never Such thing as a wild pitch, it's always a passed ball. So I need to be in a position to be blue move anywhere anywhere anytime. But what that does is it Pretty much put unit position free lots positioning stay there guests look at his chest on the ball. My opinions especially for younger catchers or in your case Forty over almost. that he took the nervous on guests tied. When you're just like fitting pipes and laying concrete for living age rapidly as knees go. Catchers growing up I firmly believe you should. You should learn how to block out of too late stance and then maybe go to the one leg. But you should never start the one leg tooling. You're kind of skipping Clark's there and pretty crucial foundation movements takes to be able to create angles and control ball and. Even to be able to react to the PITCHER, San like. If if you start a kid with a one stance in your teaching the mess, the right way to block. There is no force of A. Reaction to heaven the rain like kind of when you're hitting. The after react, you don't have to necessarily react if you're just sitting around waiting for the Balkan. He had accents. Steps and it's messy messy but they do have a point. I just don't firmly believe it's that important. Will so I saw and this was someone another catching guy on the twitter twitter verse tweeting out and be like yeah this is why one knee blocking is kind of rough and they showed a guy who has you know the catcher who was into left into a righty and I guess they're throwing a Like, a left handed slider into him right. So He's Kinda stuck in that quadrant guy throws on the wrong side of the plate catcher as like no chance to block it. So I mean everything he said with reducing your lateral mobility it is like a hundred. It seemed to get subjectively true like the guy just had no shot of blocking up all and so I guess in the big leagues most of the time that works guys have pretty good command like they don't miss the wrong side of playing that much but they've certainly still do it. and. A TIME That kitchen, it's way. Over there, you're not going to block it, but the ones that are being exposed on this twitter are the ones that that was blocking the one that I saw. Yeah. Will be blocked a traditional stance granted. There's some ones right in front of a catcher going down to two knees that probably they miss that they never miss. The Ron One way what do you? What do you want to prepare yourself for each pitch? That's kind of the the question you gotta ask yourself and even these coaches. What what do you WANNA teach? What are you? What are you going to have more importance on? On that just feels it just feels like I don't mean to cut you off by just feels like. Trying to teach like when you teach a kid to have to swings like, Hey, here's your two. Oh swaying, and here's your to strike swing. It's like that's it's such a hard thing to do in hitting such hard thing I do in general will you could put? It's it's not. It's not as drastic is a swing. because. You're literally just putting your body in a position in waiting something to happen you don't necessarily. Have to react as much. Or as when you catch his. as you know..

"Pretty consistently, very iffy arms and you wouldn't think as much about catcher but catcher diliah. Of. IFFY. Yeah S interesting that you say that now thinking back watching these perfect I mean he's sixty probably the top one hundred players in the world. All in one spot and I saw like I said twelve to fifteen of 'em working out daily and there were some noticeable a arm. You. Know. Glitches. Some this looks like they they weren't fluid enough to the. They would be. One in the big thing that I talk about that, no one talks about on the web at side arms should be the number one throwing method in the Infield for soccer players. Like. Salt Lake sidearm just like it is in baseball excitement is like the default for infielder in baseball. You know when you're in college or pros like. You throw it over the top when you got it and you got plenty of time you're gonNA throw side sidearm or if you've a short throw the quicker one, right it's in your hands out if you're charging, it has to be side on our side arm. And softball is everything is fast so fast is not getting over top because you can't do that and if you're charging it, you can't eat your shoulder till to actually throw over the top. That's why no one throws over the top when they're running, you can't actually tilt your shoulders. So that's why no matter. Even if you're running slow, they always throw side on we're below. But almost no girls store sidearm in softball either as infielders, which is really strange because they don't teach it. They think it's ineffective all. Again is like the history saw coaching. It's like side on some devil that only it seems like the highest levels had taught it very well, everyone else younger like don't Saddam's not good. They throw a while. They throw wildly because they don't get taught and they don't practice it like everything's bad if you don't practice it. So yeah. That's the thing that I think makes the most sense for the sport of change like softball. If every infielder learned a for a sidearm, it fit the game much more because it's a game short grows. So even the outfield when you charge balls outfielder. You're often getting it pretty close to the Infield then you have to like throw a second and third like. Anyway. So let's let's transition you WanNa talk about seeing pitches per plate appearance. You said the cubs at someone going on why you fill us in a little bit. So the at a dad something article talking about the cubs, the cubs are seeing I think it was like four point, two pitches per plate appearance. I'm not sure if it was this year last year it was just kind of us kind of asking like how important is that like it didn't seem to make a difference with the same last year they just struggled hitting all around like what is what is difference of the four pitches in an at bat one ten like if you're struggling hitting your Shirley hitting And I also think it's a it's probably an overrated stat at how many pitches somebody sees. But does it like I don't know if it doesn't correlate to being a good hitter seeing a lot of pitches it just it could correlate to being a patient hitter could correlate to being a like a Pesky hitter where you've fallen balls off. But I don't necessarily think it correlates to being a good hitter I. Think this with his dad was asking like how important is seeing pitches in an? And I. Think at the professional level it's probably more important strategically to see a few pitches. Based on where you hitting the lineup based on. What you know about the pitcher but at the youth level like college high school. I think you have to as as a hitter who's who's younger who probably have the back control and the? And the experience of seeing breaking pitches or pitches of slower speeds. I think you stink pitches totally overrated. If you get a good pitcher I, the first pitch at bat like that's the one you need take no. Put a good swing on. So. I'm not sure what Corliss of being a good hitter but I think at the younger levels being aggressive early in the count and not getting as deepen account is more beneficial as a hitter. And I would I always emphasize like look you'd be ready to hit the first fish. 'cause I pitch might be the best when you see and usually see teach a of young young pitchers. I mean there's a lot of guys that will ahead first pitch fastball and then go right to off-speed stuff for the majority of the rest at so. Does was coming from High School Dad, and my my point to him was that I'm not emphasizing seeing pitches to him until he's comfortable hitting all types of pitches which high school kids usually are not they're not used you're not comfortable hitting. Turbo sliders CHANGEUPS. So Do. When you had your academy, did you guys emphasize seeing pitches was? Is it ever talked about? I mean, it was talked about a little bit in pro ball, but not as much as maybe it's emphasize now. We talk about that. Wasser, valuable. Or as valuable is getting a single and being on basis the number one thing you can do Delfi. Team. So the most valuable thing, you can do essentially from like a run expectancy. Perspective is not making now it's the best thing you can do doesn't matter what you do just don't make now is the best thing to help your team score. So that's a walk. So be it. So we emphasize being selective. And getting epistle drive. But the caveat is if the first pitch is right down the middle, hit it like you gotTa, know what your pitches and then get. Really, it's just like anything else you're hunting for like you're digging a sandbox and you know that there's like six different little items, little treasures in your sandbox and you know you want the car. Wash does if he take one scoop in the cars there you're done, you want the other ones. You have to scoop up all the other ones I in the cars last. So be it. In it's kind of the same thing as an article about showed swing at the verse Bitch Because I. Think in the Dugout sometimes teams get Ron and this was a talking point with me one day. The Guy, one of the players was coming in the third inning. He's like let's go guys like he's thrown used to getting ahead. Early we gotta swing early we gotta get ready to swing on that I fit somebody why? Why ready to swing on the first pitch? You've no idea if it'll.

"Every time he hit a home run that year the Spanish years he hit sixty I mean he hops like. Three big hops out of the of the box. That's very flashy. But he ran the base like he ran around Tottenham Plate whatever. It's the guys I think that hit. Him flipper bat and take thirty seconds around the bases as if like we're all going to sit here and watch that like it's one thing to hit it put and I'm sure pitchers are Kinda like I'm sure a lot of pictures don't notice the pimp job because they watch the ball at the turn the ball fly. But then when you have when you've got to watch him Jog at a snail's pace around the basis i. think that's when you're. Turning the knife it's one thing that it's one thing to stab the guy with home runs thing turn a knife and really emphasize it I'm all for the okay pamphlet hit a home run do whatever bat flip it but at least jogger on the basis like Gimme Gimme a decent pace. That's my. That's my. Yeah welcome compared football, comparing it to football where they seem to solve around a replay which I think is excessive and unnecessary like. Celebrate after sack every tackle it seems unnecessary but. The football celebrations are not about the other team like they're clueless rubbing it in that guy's face. It's just like the linemen are celebrating together the A got a sack. It's the white seaver celebrating that he scored a touchdown it's not like disrespecting. It's not like he's running and taunting like I get. There's a penalty for taunting now but they don't really seem like that's what they are just like a show of happiness or whatever. And in baseball it's really become the same thing. Obviously, there are times when. You throw a guy later gets a bomb off you and he pensa down. There's clearly like a message which is fine. If it was like a kid for tat I like it, I like it remotely today guys hit the home run and they stand there for a second they watch it on the. Other bat and it's not really. It's just like the cancel culture on the web. It's like twitter as a pitcher if you let it offend you if you if you make it about you. Then, it Jerry get fired up like Maxim bumgarner couple weeks ago he chirping at every body and throwing like meat balls on the NOLA play. It's like you just got to pitch better dude and stop worrying about the hitters right? Like it's not about us. They're not. They're not out there show up as Bumgarner they're hitting Dinger's all asam bumgarner like. What are you going to do? A lot of these are situation although because if you're down ten to one and you hit a solo shot and you pimp like dude. Your Bat and Ron Because you get your ass kicked like there's definitely situational if it's tied and you had to go ahead home run and you WanNa flip your bat cool like I think the pace around the bases is a staple like if you're gonNA, hit iron keep a decent pace. But if you're losing by a lot or you hit a home run that as meaningless to your team, there's no need to it's not a me game like it's really not an it's not an individual game. Where you know, you hit a good shot like engulf and you can celebrate at like you're losing a lot. Do you got your team is getting their ass kicked? Like there's no need to put the guy behind you in jeopardy like if the pitcher takes the wrong way where he's GonNa, wear one in the back. which is an unwritten rule that doesn't seem to get us as much is protecting your own players as pitchers I saw I don't forget what it was like a couple of weeks ago where a guy got hit and he said something to the media like, yeah I wish I would like one of my guys with a protected May and like basically if you get hit, you expect your picture to retaliate in some form and hit somebody on their team not maliciously. But like let him know like, Hey, we're gonNA protect our guys in your pictures. You know I'm sure you've been in situations where guys in the dugout relax somebody better protect me somebody better protect you know so and so after get hit twice a game or something so. I. Think that's one that's one that never gets brought up because it's violent I. Guess. It's more violent showing in baseball field but I'm all for the you hit somebody when you guys get set, you hit my best player like your best players to get good wear one at some point. Moravian Code. I got my picture. I got my. Put me on the mound. I'll do it. Great. Accuracy well, there is something to be said this is a big greater philosophy but in one of the books I read recently they were talking about how? Back. In the day even for simple things like you were held accountable. So I came what time period this was in history. But if you're if you're building a house from some for someone and then house collapsed on them and killed their son. Your son is going to be killed in retribution. It's collapses in kills donor then you be killed. Some serious. Attention to detail you're making that if you're building at House right? Very. If you're building a house for me and I bet you three hundred grand and I get to legally murder you if it collapses and Gills on my family members. You're going to double check and all of your eyes and all of your lower case Jay's and you're gonNA, across all your T.'s it's going to be a very well built house. There's no way I'm building a house. If that's the rule if that's the law not building a house, but I agree with. Bill I mean houses don't fall down disarray all. Other disagree with the the eye for an eye type thing. There used to be a thing camera when I feel abuse in Britain I, I'd have to look it up in the book but they said that when a architect built the bridge, he would have to stay under the bridge for a couple of days after it was complete. Just like it's GonNa fall grow. On you should lock. Be. So. Scary. BE SO NERVOUS So I don't know the the the tit for tat thing is a is a legitimate deterrent if it's something seriously if you hit my guy, I'm GonNa hit one year guys. I mean I think it's a real thing on a bowl. Holds. Guys accountable on your own team like I don't WanNa. Stop doing that stop doing that Bob I'm going to get in. That's legitimate. Legitimate. If we showed up I'm it as once I showed up, I.

"Now. The one thing I do. I. Do understand when coaches are like look we're trying to get to the run role to save pitching because it's not if it was just like a League game, then you stop running if you're in a tournament where some of these tournaments will run seven eight games to win it, I get trying to shorten the game and you and you can't argue with the coach trying to do that because you just can't carry enough pitchers to get through seven seven inning games in a three day span but you just don't have enough bodies. So if you could short in a game two, four, five innings your there, you probably do it. I don't have an issue with teams doing it every issue with teams that are like. Stealing, third like taking home when they're already up fifteen, sixteen, Seventeen Ron's on you. which happens a lot knuth games because defense is just not play very well. Yeah. And if it's if you're looking can't block the ball and keep going to the to the backstop. You feel like you should take the base because that's the way against played. But then again, you're like let's stay put after a while. You stop them usually. Stop Stop the kids at third base like it's the gets passed like, okay. We're stay here may drive map. Yeah I mean there's been situations where we've been winning. Like we've been winning by a lot where I'll tell guys like, hey. You know. Were taken were taken. were either taken a pitch or like y'all. I remember being in a game where it's like they're struggling so bad on other team like look we're not swinging like strike shoddy strike shot. We won't count the stats. Okay. We're just trying to like. You know you're going to hit the ball five hundred feet off this kid like he doesn't even look he's pitch before let's just let him strike out whatever and that to me that feels like disrespectful towards the game but you're trying to not embarrassed like the other team as well because they are kids in a college game or something I would never suggest that. System that's happened. It just sucks when the game really breaks down I don't mind the team getting embarrassed like if you don't like getting. Than I don't take that feeling home in your pocket and. Change something up or quit. Like I don't I don't think we need I. Don't I don't WanNA protect self esteem but when the game just gets out of hand and Messi like base, the base is fine. But yeah. The whole like I duNNo. Non Embarrassing thing is if he for me? Sometimes you need those. Look. Summary are was are like. That hurts. Unwritten Unwritten youth rules either. That set me off for like three Oh fake bunt. That sets that sets me off big time or. Or like the Disguising moments because I was a good point you brought up which is the. A you have to consider not just winning this game but winning the tournament. Moore's like the overarching thing. So when you're talking about yet, we're GONNA steal up nine Ron's because we wanna get to the ten ron ruler while Ron Roller whatever an MS games we can save our bitching. That's a move that makes sense given the whole scope of the tournament. It doesn't make sense given the scope of just one game. So you do have to think of it more of that way. If you only think of it as far as this one game in a tournament, you're just not playing strategy correctly. So you're right they're stealing up ten ron's in a tournament. Where potentially shortens the game saves you pitching? Unfortunately? That is okay. You just it's fine because you have to. Again, you're trying to win the tournament, not just the single game. And the time. So somewhat the time when that's because these hormones all time limits. No of this hour forty five or two hours to fifteen. When it gets close Do you forego mound visits if you're winning or do not. I mean, it's all about the timing of the visit, right like as guy out there for a while and you need to, you need to go out there to give him a breather or did you ask the unpire? How much time we have left before? We can start new winning and he says, you know five minutes I mean a lot of times umpires will be good like if it's right on the cost, but it's close game like I will run another one because like that was quick inning but obviously if the endings are taken long. And you're just out there stalling like take them out visit and you make the empire coming, get you and you said nothing and then you wait one patient and go take the guy out and replace him with a new pitcher like. They're probably are starting to be some rules by mound visits and I. Think if we're in a time limiting, maybe they should implement like look amount visit as a poem like that set no talking you're gone. Yeah See. I. Disagree with that because I still will have a mound visit if it's necessary. So we're up to like this is a situation where you're in last summer we are up to two one in like the seventh and it was definitely like this is GonNa last happening and they did just like act's innings. But we gotta run our on and it was like the time run on base, and there was like some legit strategies that I need to talk to arbiture about like how to approach this pitcher is a critical moment in the game. I'm taking them out visit and I'm GonNa Talk to my guy, I'm gonNA explain this. Is How we're going to hopefully prevent that time run from scoring. I'm not not having that visits because you know some coaches GonNa end the guy other complain about doing. So don't care. This was legit part of the game. This is three. There needs to be some there needs to be a different rule can't just be like a no new winning after an hour forty five there needs to be like, okay. Once, we start the fifth like if we're close, they say, okay, this is the lasting like. I'm not not all you can't be where you get to the bottom of the fifth there like Wolf we finish a sending in less than seven minutes. We'll play another one like 'cause then because then you're gonNA, get guys at stall and they probably should stall. That's a good strategy. Honestly, if you have to waste seven minutes, it's a, it's A. Bush league strategy, but it's still a strategy like we've been. We're talking strategy about you know like you said, he's a big moment in a game like a big moment in a game might be I don't WanNa waste my this kid the closing inning when he could start the championship game for me going to stall. So I think there needs to be some more. Not. More like baseball though that's the problem like baseball is not in the time limits though that's the whole point. Right? Is like there is no time limit normal baseball. So if you're going to implement it, then there needs to be rule. So guys can't manipulate it like stalling like passing a basketball around the court when there's no shot clock, it's like, Oh, we're GONNA waste four minutes quarter passing because other teams in are running down our throat. Like there needs to be there needs to be it's different set of rules for games that are timed I think well, I think the Umpire Disney's go out. Just follow guy out there he's actually talking to pitcher..

"Well welcome back. brushback episode fifty two. We are here live once again after three prerecord episodes which were getting quality I think Bob, how would you rate the prerecorded? Non By quality. I mean better than anything. I've ever done on the podcast plus we had good guests really good. We good get. We had really good guests. So that was a made up that made up for For whatever lack of quality we might have had we just recorded you and I have been trash can have but nobody carry the load Ryan Copeland in limbo and from Mile Mater. So. Pitching guys joined extensive pitching knowledge on on the show. We need a balanced out. We had so much hitting garbage for forever. Oldman yelling clouds. Back Glorious. Glorious hitting talk. I'm all for the pitching stuff. I've got five, I think five and two thirds innings on the mound professionally. I'm in there I'm in the I'm in the position position player. Pitching Hall of fame. That's just simply not true. So today in our in our in our episode today, we're GONNA go for unwritten rules in baseball including. Do you swing three Oh when you have a little bit of lead, I love for an entity junior stealing with the big lead. Taking the extra base which the pass ball with a big lead bunting on no-no. Rowing hitters. What's the right and wrong way to do it We'll talk a little bit outside the home run stuff and then an amateur baseball specific one. Be Time clock. So should you have mound visit when there's like sediments go in the game? He will get pretty good about that. So I will also talk a little bit about Bob Yours himself about seeing pitches. How important it is a see a lot of bitches combat stuff like that, and so we'll wildblood less are up with Fernando taty since we were away for this big news but swing through I commented a little a little bit about this on twitter wants your take on Achi swing through. Loved. It loved every second of it. First of all, it's bases loaded so. You don't. There's no reason not to swing I have not actually heard that unwritten rule like specifically as far as not swinging three. Oh. I mean I guess spent a specific scenario where the where the bases are loaded. So it's not like there's nowhere to put the guy. but no, I mean swing through like the all the at bats count. If, he strikes out after getting throw like that strike outs. So counts. Yeah I think. I think made in the major leagues almost everyone came to his defense. I'm not sure there are many people on social media or anywhere else on the social media's the the High Court here but I didn't see anyone be like, yeah. What a jerk that was so. Modern baseball will got mad at no one said that. Was the was it the manager the other team that got real pissed that I heard it was both managers. So. His manager I saw didn't stick up for him I mean, that's now if you're Tutsi if you're T.'s I mean, that's it right there. Right like you're not gonNA stick up for me after winning ball games I'm saving your job in a in a city that never wins I'm the I'm arguably the MVP front runner and you're not gonNA you're not gonNA defend me early stick up for a little bit. He's He lost the locker room right there I think like you have especially with big personalities like Totti's Machado in that locker room like they run the show their this manager. I don't even know what what the manager name, but he is not he they're not taking his personality on the field like they're taking those guys. So if you lose those two guys, you might as well pack your bags leave. While I don't think anyone even knows zooming you over the bodies or member care with the batteries. Manager is is just like John's a pencil pusher like who cares Let's appoint is not. Only Russa yeah. No you WANNA keep that job. It's like you and you're not going to back. You're you're MVP candidate when he didn't even I mean I could see if you like through somebody's head if he threw it somebody's head or if he's a pitcher throws his somebody's head hits him in the helmet you could say look we're not trying to we're not trying to hurt anybody ball what. This kid swings it a three. Oh. Pitch that you lay in there like screw it. I'm GonNa hit five hundred feet. While it was weird was it was only attended three. The game is completely out of hand like a like a two run Jack by the other team the next inmates down to five that's like A. Not A. It's not a laugher anymore and seven rounds like whatever. But also that was not center cut. It was like our third like down. Like, you could see. Nice. I mean yeah it was not easy hit for him to be new fast fastballs coming obviously but beyond that it wasn't like Again belt. High. Right. Down the middle, it was only a third. and. If it's like one to count, that might be a ground ball double play right you end to talk on it. You know honeymoon you need bullet. which the? What's the narrative? What's the narrative? If he if he pops out is everyone still pissed off at him. Ours everyone's saying always idiot I swing and three Oh no cares as dumb. Yeah. It's his risk. Well Matthew. With Rio pits. The outcome is not certain. Like. It's not like stealing third with ten run lead whether it's like we know you're not gonNA throw I'm just GONNA get third base for free. bitches like the outcomes not certain.

Will be pretty attentive to it, so you can. You can ask him. We'll kind of throw them in where there were the relevant contextual, but we're just about snooker, so wait is one of Jaffer, you legendary snooker player, or or what's the deal? Why are we talking about soccer? I wouldn't say legendary big. Battles I want A. When I was in college I grew up in the bay area in California and my grandmother under. Bar. And had cable, so I would go in there ever since I was a little boy and I would play. All standing on a milk crate. Against the town. Who Wander in their time to time. And so I've always. Had Pool in my house? In Oklahoma. We had our shed so. It's one of those games. It's surprisingly like everyone can be kind of mediocre added I feel like really hard to be really good at it takes a lot of discipline. I feel like. To actually go get the English on its own goes in sets up the shot. That's I think yeah, legislator Miami, which would know more than me, but. My experience some. It takes a lot of practice, and if you don't play for a while, had takes a few games to get back in the GROOVE, but if you're playing consistently, you know any. Kind of have an idea of how to work the ball, all and stuff like that and get good at it. Richard You Pool Hall right you have. So. What's your game? Also? Are you legend or what's how? How do you rank within your own club? When I played. With club top ten maybe but when I played a lot which I don't anymore. Maybe top twenty in the metropolitan area! That's pretty serious. One of my favorite movies is the Jackie gleason. Paul Newman movie the Hustler thanks great movie if it goes I assume. It's good. It's good lessons for like any young athlete. I have my team watch at one year, because just like the professionalism showing up every day. Being consistent like Jackie gleason Scherzer wasn't the best like obviously Paul Newman. The young gun was better than him. But he wasn't them every day in show up everyday. Sorry to interrupt with Jackie. Minnesota fats the movie, yeah! Yeah, it's a good old movie. Date, with these movie references, I'm stuck on King Bob some mobs Zimbabwe millennial. You're like the Justin Bieber of the year younger than you. Fine. So off today, my first question for the group. Is obviously this is GonNa, get more targeted more specific as we go, but we talked. This has been a common thread on twitter is old players versus today's flares. Could this player pack it in today's game? You know could Ted Williams hit at Amata Vino or like Andrew Miller slider like is this a relevant thing that we should actually comparing players who grew up in different generations like Jeff you grew up in. Europe later on in the nineties. So. The way you grew up and you were trained. was completely different than players. Growing up in training today. All. Authors of to Richard I I mean good valid to compare someone from ten twenty thirty forty fifty years ago, so today's players. I'm not sure what you mean, but valid. I think you in my case. I'm interested in the swing. I can learn the swing from the old players in the new players. So in that regard, it's a balance. You I get involved in a lot of discussions about good Ted later day. Every now and then. My feeling is. The nineteen fifties Ted could not today. But if Ted was born today to play today. Okay so let let me let me rephrase then. Jeff Judy right so. Why is that relevant in today's game? I mean Jeff played for a decade in the big leagues at the highest level. People are beating down the door to take his job. He kept it. So why is it relevant? Wiser relevant in today's game. Gypsum, UNQUOTE It wouldn't be grafted today. But if jeff was born like say when I was born. I'm thirty four. He'd still be in his prime. Maybe he would it. Twenty five jacks like Jose Altuve the smaller players today things in smaller players of yesteryear Ted with this. Ted with note, the same swing in the fifty city has born today. Judy swing, open in the nineties would not play. Jeff were you got? What evidence we have to substantiate that there is no evidence that. I've got a goal out of nothing. Just because you say, it doesn't mean it's true. Are you ready to see it? Are you ready to see it? Yeah show me. I'm.

"There's. What a special time! What special time to be alive Robert! This is this is A. Social Teaser interesting times. We'll be in history books for sure. Sure. well, hello, welcome back. This is the morning brushback podcasts I'm. Dan Lewis Honor Co host. I'm here joined remotely by. My sometimes friends sometimes nemesis bobby Stevens Bobby. How are you today? I'm feeling great. Thanks for having me. Bob's feeling triumphant because I just begrudgingly agreed at the cage match that he's always wanted. Since we add Jeff Frye and Richard Richard Skunk on the show. Bosses might dream. It's going to be the worst so. Film, about what what we're talking about. or I mean I don't know what we're GonNa talk about on that high caste other than hitting but. Obviously Richard got his following of how he thinks the swing should work. Jeff has following on what he what he thinks. You should teaching kids, and how you should go about approaching on on hating the modern analytics and all that stuff. Yeah, so I think it will be a good battle royale I picture it like the old MTV. Were Link. The clay figures fought each other. What was at show celebrity death match? I picture that happening I think that would be. That'd be nice comparison like Jeff Frye. Richard SKINC. Celebrity death match! The A warning brushback. Well so for those of you if it's not clear, we obviously had jeff on the show. We obviously had richards gang on the show Richard Zev was are by far the most popular set over five thousand views slash listens which was. I, mean we average I mean I don't care about talking about numbers you on the show. We typically average two to three hundred views on twitter. After about you know. A couple of days have gone by. Includes live and replay abou a hundred to two hundred views on youtube. And then about the same on on I two, so we do a decent job reaching people, but so if you say that it's an average of five, hundred listens to show, Richards got five thousand views just on twitter alone it was it was bananas. It just got tweeted everywhere because he is so controversial, Jeff's I think it was our third most popular episode in Liam Bowen from NBC. My Alma. Mater he was number two crushing about a thing. Eight hundred listens on twitter over thousand total but I mean that that episode, of Richard was far and away. Our most popular one I mean like is absurd. It's crucial part graph. Our guard graph now are. Embarrassed, it still has its huge spikes. Omega all of our other shows like a tiny little like dime size wafer of of a bar graph. I'm really bitter about that actually like my analytics better. So so bobby wants to have them back both back on to just basically quarrel. which I haven't used coral long time, great word, basically just a quarrel on our show Abou- Baseball I see anything coming from it to be. Disagree I don't WanNa do it. I totally disagree with you. I think it will. Here's the problem. Is I think that they're both on the? If you put a spectrum of hitting on a graph, I, think they're both allot closer to each other than they are to the people that just really exit velocity in the and the numbers that hit tracks and try and teach you hitting like I. Totally Think I actually believe this, not WanNa both on the show, but I believe they were very close in what they think hitters like should do. And what they believe about hitting, but they don't like each other. Personally, it seems so. It should make for some goods like Danae like we let we let me ask you, we. We actually like to those who don't know. Our dynamic is good, because bobby views are just ridiculous and stupid, a lot of time on the minor minor, always really good and smart, but bobby. We didn't know each other that long. We played together for what a month on the Ganor starts. And then you were gone. You'd a hamstring injury I. Don't they're released you're you just laughed? Whichever it was either way you're just you're just hurt. And then Bob Lives in Chicago I lived in Bloomington Illinois for the last nine years, and Bobby is one of those people. When you visit his town, he'll. He drops everything and says we're GONNA go do this. You'll take care of. You'll pay for all the drinks I. Always tried to give you money. Jerk no, that's never never let me take it. But and we actually this conversation. We're getting sentimental here. We have this conversation about I was telling you to stop being such a Dick on twitter to everybody as Julie, unlike bobby. That's not good for your brand is not who you are. You're one of the like the best people I know you take care of your super loyal to the people that you care about, and you take great care of them, and that's why we're friends. I mean every time I came up and saw you and usually was. Much ICAGO and you're like Dan. You made a way bigger deal about like. We were acquaintances I'd say and usually made a big. You make a big deal that everybody which is again while your good friend. And that's our friendship maintained over all the years. Usually when you play someone that you're not super close with like I think we liked each other, but we didn't really talk that. Much era position player I was a pitcher was definitely just really going. PADS. But BSO were here so obviously you enjoy each other. Despite having different views, but those who genuinely hate each other so i. don't see how that's going to be productive conversation I mean I think it's just GonNa be cringe-worthy. I think it's going to be like watching a WWe match where it actually turns like real violence. Not what if they become like best friends? There's zero chance that happens. What if they do like I hold out the hope that I could that we could be like the. WHO's a peacemaker I don't know I think I. Think I'm a pretty good peacemaker. I read a lot of books about responding conflict couple years ago to do that exact thing in my academy with parents and coaches I feel like you. However he Gandhi however people have to want to listen, and Jeff is pretty set in his beliefs. Richard is very set in his beliefs as affirmed by the statement in our podcast, Re said essentially no one taught anything correct about hitting for a hundred years, which I regret not catching in the moment and calling him on a little bit, because that's certainly not true. That's ridiculous exaggeration. We can argue about that. I mean Eh, there's GLATZ classic Bob is it or is it? It's an absurd statement to say that no one taught anything correct for a hundred years just like it's nonsensical..

"Don't I feel like there's there's plenty of those guys that either exceed our matches offensive numbers that. Played shortstop at a high level and You know I mean there's all again. You got not say high level. That's too vague. I mean these are major leaguers and back then certain one stat that's people are sharing. Is that you? He fielded nine seventy six at a time when the average outfielder nine sixty five. which is a pretty significant amount of just purely making the plays you get to, and of course, none of that Philip is building presents does not measure balls that you get to that you know so. I played shortstop. Bobby Stevens play shortstop. Bobby is going to have thirty percent chances because he's GonNa Glove a ball in the hole. That I'm too slow to get to, and he's GonNa make he's GonNa make plays. Plays that could make so I'm sure they've have looked back at how many chances he got compared to the average shortstop, those probably way more because he's getting more balls that they don't do even touch. If you don't touch the ball in the mall I, mean I. Don't know if I don't on the horrors. The it doesn't go down error whereas you make that play, it goes down. You know an assist. So yeah, I mean there's I'm sure there's I'm sure somebody has done the breakdown a lot more than me, just saying as you. Smith isn't hall of Famer. It seems like you've done the same amount of work on this as you have like with your vaccines, theory like essentially. I know way more about vaccines. But essentially nothing compared anyone in medical but okay. False like bobby. Knight believe it. Believe me medicine by the way I believe in Santa doesn't believe in medicine doesn't believe in Ozzie Smith. I'm sorry who's denying WHO's denying Santa? Claus does believe Donald Trump. "Hello, it is Tuesday. June second I'm Dan Blewett I'm the coast of the morning. brushback bobby Stevens joining me remotely from Chicago. Five how you doing man? I'm doing good crazy crazy world. We live in right now. Yeah, you and I are both in two of the. Most heavily rioting cities it seems like. Yeah Chicago's Chicago is getting quite. Quite bad. The police are stretched very thin. Stephanie please. Let's! Let's start there. You do like to all the police scanner. You're out. You're out last night the previous night. What have you seen in what's been going on? So. I was driving around last night in the neighborhood. Just I mean. What am I gonNA do one person, but at least there's some kind of presence people you know. Take an interest in what's happening and that was happening everywhere so. We live pretty. We live pretty close to a a busy intersection. You know that intersection got hit heavily, but there were broken windows, looting, and all these businesses had. Neighborhood people standing outside Kinda camping out, but just hanging outside cars parked in front of the windows. Definitely definitely more of a neighborhood presence last night, than the previous night felt like. There weren't as many police officers in the neighborhood. rightfully, so I know the coordinate the scanner that was going crazy We had people all over the city. Peaceful protests rioting, so it was, it was nice to see people in the neighborhood. You know, take an interest in each other. It was felt. Felt safe driving around, but at the same time you can. Definitely you can definitely tell. Everybody was on high. Yeah I'm very right now. Because it just went for a run and time to wait, you close star podcast, but I got back I walked in my door five. After forty minutes, which is a little longer than normal for me, so I'm like if you're wondering why Dan's beat red is because of that. But I wanted to go survey the city a little bit I live. I guess as the Crow flies maybe a mile and a half from the White House slash. Lafayette Square maybe yeah, that's about right probably, so there's not like March. Ending where I was, but there was some protests started up here. I wasn't a part of them. But it's The city is very boarded up. I mean especially close to the White House. Very very boarded up. There's people out there now and just like. Cut in wooden. And getting prepared so anyone the wasn't an obviously. They call the high shopping or the expensive shopping sort of not district, but there's A. A main centre chunk I guess a half a mile from. From the White House on the Chinatown side that has Gucci League. If you saw on the twitter sphere the other day like the Gucci store them breath into it and all that stuff, the looters yeah so that that whole block has been brought up since two days ago, I was down there though day, so any place that's been hit or is in in the realm, is getting boarded up pretty fast, and it's just crazy sight to see. You know I, watched the twitter twitter stream from my home last night. And, I don't I don't know it's. It's strange because I think during the day, the protests are definitely peaceful, which is good? and then as soon as nightfall hits, the police definitely seem to be the aggressors last night. Just before trump got his His wonderful little phone from the Church would seem which seems like that's what pretty much started off. I guess the cops had shove everyone back in or pretty aggressive about it. So he could walk out of the White House and get his photo opportunity. I don't know. How do you feel about that story? Yeah I saw the G- ask, are they? The rubber bullets the I mean. Let's backtrack great so. The the incident. Minneapolis I think we're all on the same page. have. In a political thing about I mean no, no, no I just on I was like we should. We should address it right, so you know what happened in Minneapolis should never happen. I think we're all in agreement on that I think it's. Justice, to be served, would be the police officer with his neon The man's neck and the three police officers were observing like nobody took initiative hearing. This guy scream. If you've seen the video, it's terrible video. I think we're all in agreement on that I have I have yet to see somebody. Come out on the opposite side. Defend the police officer, which rightfully so like. This guy doesn't need to be defended all. Now fast forward to currently what's happening? For. I thought what trump said. Yesterday was I thought he had a good speech I. mean the photo op. What happened with the people? Obviously the optics are not good right like if it's if it was specifically further photo, op I I think he waited way too long. The State to reference the rioting so two days ago when everything kind of started to happen ten eleven o'clock at night Chicago time. He's not the White House went lack when dark. If you saw that picture. That was not in my opinion. That's not the right that's not what should have happened like he needed to have. An emergent I duNno merge whatever. They do mercy, press conference from inside the white. House somewhere late at night. Calling for. Peaceful Protests Whatever I don't agree with. I liked what he had to say yesterday. I thought he had to say yesterday. Projected as a strong unified. Message like before peaceful protests, but this rioting has a has to stop. But I don't know if it's necessarily my place or anybody else's place to tell someone of African American how to feel about it or how to go about I feel. Peaceful protests has been happening..

"Welcome back this is Tuesday morning. I'm Dan blew. It does the morning back. I'm joined by my co host. Bobby Stevens Robert how you doing. Good Morning. Good Morning. Happy Memorial Day weekend. Happy Post Memorial Day to you too. Yeah it was a relatively quiet. I believe my mic is on the up and up today so you sound crossed or often running. We're both wearing blue shirts. What a weekend but what did you. What did you do for Memorial Day? Robert was pretty table by my parents was the first time that I had seen like all my nieces and nephews together since probably February so it was good. We had the pool in the backyard. The blow up will for that most splash around in and I had I had some alcohol in my cup so it was a fantastic weekend for for. How do you feel about Coca Cola? Fan of the classic beverage. No I'm not a fan. You know what I was never allowed to drink pop. We call it pop in the Midwest. I miss it stop. We were never allowed to drink when I was younger so I never like anytime I drink it. It just makes me more thirsty so I just don't like it but if I had to choose if you're GonNa make me choose one of the other I'm GonNa Choose Pepsi so I never drink soda and I never buy Soda but when I was in Turkey last year. If you order so do you got a little eight ounce glass bottle of it which I was like which is made with real sugar and all these other things. Don't I get a real real sugar? Coca Cola or Pepsi is like the Mexican coke which may be made with real. Drugs is unbelievably good. Like you can't even deny that people that don't like pop drink Mexican coke and they're like this is something I need to have. I've had that was sexually had one recently and I wanted a second one. I refrained but that was my point and good job. Grab my my mic Mus died. I didn't connect a power club up to my mic. But so yeah so I don't I've never ever don't ever give me like a can of coke or a a plastic Bala could just. It's not good because the corn syrup but I got a couple of glass bottles of Mexican coke the real sugar coke and it's just like the best thing it's like the best so yesterday but one of those in my little Double insulated bottle thing took it down on the National Mall and I sat there and I. It's writing as wanted around and just like hung out under tree in the shade with my frosty cold throwback Coca Cola and it was amazing. It was like it was like this is the best the best. Did you say glass bottle? Yeah they come to class but I didn't bring the glass by dumped into my No there's Yoga Wall on. That is a correct way to drink coke that class bottle. Yeah it's it's a whole different experience so out there and you don't remember the magic of real sugar coke. It's way more expensive. Like a dollar twenty five for one. Twelve ounce bottle but it's totally worth it. I mean especially you know. It's weird now. Seem others the other day. There were million Soft serve ice cream trucks down on the National Mall like so many of them and it's really good offerings and I was Gonna get one I was like. Nah I was like kind of I never did. But it's weird. How our perception of pricing completely change is just based on where we are. If I was like you know it was like four dollars or five dollars for a cone. I think aunt's like that's not unreasonable. I would pay that. It feels like seven. That'd be like go. Screw yourself but that was reasonable. But that's the price of an entire to courts of ice cream in your grocery store. You know what I mean. And letting and you other shower right him for that. You shop around for that to court quarterback scream. Yeah and other four dollar items in the grocery store. You're like I don't really need that. That's kind of expensive but then when you're out it's just the your your brain does like flips a switch and I find it somewhat bizarre same Mexican coke. It's a dollar twenty five kind of expensive like five bucks for four those little bottles. Then if you're out on the town evenness dot no problem spending six dollars on a beer or whatever else is just. It is Kinda strange acumen behavior because argue. Oh I get this beer but like to sit in this magical restaurant for an hour. What a bargain is you're paying for the you're paying. I know the scene. I realize that you are but you're you don't think that way you have to priceless in your brain and they just immediately switch. I just think it's kind of fascinating. It's it's it's clear it's it's very evident when you're when you're in a big city like Chicago and you go downtown. End Beers or eleven dollars for the for the local craft. Beer in your like in the crazy part.

"The morning. Brushback podcast. I'm your host IAN it. I'm here join remotely by my Nemesis Bobby Stevens Bobby. How are you good morning? Good morning and we've a great guest today. Bobby who is our guest today. Our guest is radio records radio personality. I'M GONNA call you radio personality. Sure former six seventy the score radio personality in Chicago Podcast host. I'm fat podcast and basketball camp. Rick Camp Rick Welcome. Hey thanks for having me guys I appreciate it. I can't say since I've been laid off that I've been awakened showered and truly conscious this early. But Hey happy to be here. We are flattered. We're truly showering and honored and flower. Yeah Eighty need to shower but we appreciate the I need. I don't know about you guys. I'm a morning shower person. I need the shower to help. Wake up and just kinda start thinking and just get out of the normal like morning doldrums. So that's an essential for me. I'm kind of like stare in bed and hate myself for while and then start moving. And then just feel really groggy That's like my routine in a sense. Just justly hatred for the world for like an hour kind of where I go. Dan's the dance on the East Coast. So he's got an hour he's GonNa jump start on us. It is nine zero three here. It's very exciting. Yeah the the whole time zone thing but rick also experience podcasters. Well you've got the I'm fat. Podcast was very funny. I love your. I'm you know we have my business partner design our podcast which I think logo and design is incredibly important for people. Just giving you a try. Yeah I love your logo. It's Burger it's got like I'm fat in it it's It's it's funny. Yeah one of them one of our listeners. Who's a friend of J the Guy? Do the podcast with when we Switched platforms. He made the logo for us. And we saw it and we weren't sure what we were looking for but we saw like holy crap that's it that's exactly what we need like. That's the essence right there. Yeah that's how you WanNa feel about a logo. Is You want to look at it just like looking at like. That's it and it can take a long time to get to that point but sometimes it doesn't nets cool one is just like Bingo printed. Yeah yeah that's awesome so go for the basketball camp to one. That's that's a former score fantasy football expert winner Steven Johnson actually who's like kind of dabbled in some graphic design. And I was looking for a logo and after you know getting badgered enough to actually start that podcast which I've been wanting to do for a while but didn't quite know how I wanted to do it. And then hey I got some extra time on my hands so I might as well get this thing going. And he was He was willing to help me out. It's Kinda wanted it to look somewhat like a center court type design with it. Having looked like she actually was on a court so he gave me the color Palette. I wanted and I'm so bad with art the fact I just wanted to like be able to dictate it to somebody and hope to God they understand what the Hell I was talking about? And he delivered big time and it was. I love it. It's a good logo so rick how I mean. You've been in the radio industry for a long time. And now you're you're you're having pod guessing as well but how do you feel about the space? I mean you've seen this change a ton in your career. Tell me about radio versus podcasting. I over the last probably three years or so. I've really leaned towards as a listener. Enjoying the PODCAST. Space much better. Like if I look at my phone right now the amount of podcast that I have like in pocket cast. That's the appetite us for listening purposes. I've got so many different podcasts. And most of our basketball related. Because I am a simpleton pretty much I have very few like interests and boy basketball's the big one so our best ball and food two of my biggest things so I I lean towards long form where you truly get. Have the legroom tell stories and really breakdown like XS and Os. Fats your thing or just being more of a storyteller based on who? You're listening to its Ma you can just catering much more to what you want. As opposed to radio where part of the challenge of radio part of the reason. I still love radio from a being an industry standpoint. Is You have to. Kinda fill both voids and I know what I like. That stations are doing now that marred. If it's a bad thing is that you know. Radio revenue is down. There's not as many commercials. So you straight have more time to maybe go long form and change the format or the sound of your of your show like Lawrence homes. That I worked with for a long time his show. If you really listened to it sounds closer to a podcast and it does a radio. Show the only thing. That's really different. Is He? Resets in the middle of it because the podcast as I'm learning and I'm still working towards myself you don't really have to reset as much in terms of who I am and who I'm speaking with. What the topic is because you chose to hit play. You saw the description so you have a good idea already. But I'm Sam Blewitt Idiot. I don't resets. Hey thanks again for tuning in. I'm here with Rick Camp and Bobby Stevens my nemesis right and you guys are smarter than me in terms of having your actual names on the resume screen where again. I'm a simpleton I just have all lower case and it's just my first name my first and my initial like that's it's funny you mention that one of our guests and I won't mention him but I hope years this You know there's all different like all different fake names that you would use your brain calling someone like molester or Had is set at drew peacock and forgot to change it and say hey I need you to Ed. I need you to cover that up. And editors like obviously of course we'll do that But it's funny that you mentioned that because he didn't really couldn't figure out a change at once we were going so I only the only time I ever think of it is when I'm already on a call and I'm looking at it. I never think of it any other time to. Hey Moron maybe you should change that. No it's close. It's better than it's better than turning so you're talking about. Yeah you talked about Lawrence homes. He does his own. I think he does his own. Podcast like seven on my swag right like so so. It's a little bit about radio. How I guess working in radio for as long as you did. What was your experience as far as dealing with some of these guests dealing with some of the you know. Have you been starstruck talking on the phone with some of these guys getting you know getting some people maybe some especially with the last dance on? I'm sure there's people. Radio are trying to get all these former bulls on you know. Have you been star struck by any of the People? You've got on the radio on some of these radio shows. I'm trying to think back because it was more towards the beginning and it I don't know I don't know how it sounds but like once you're in it for a while a lot of the starstruck aspect kind of goes away. Like I know the first time I spoke with Frank Thomas when I called him. That was a big one because for me growing up a white sox fan that was huge to get to speak to him even if it was you know just the the basic interaction When I was first getting to meet some bears players like before I was fulltime the end the last three years of the Doug and OBI post game show six seventy the score. I was working with Doug Phone. Who is you know? Legendary legendary guy and and Abramovich. Two guys that maybe aren't in the innermost circle of bears defenders all time but in that second layer they are absolutely right there and two guys that were really cool and just you know they treat you even though like who am i. Someone that had worked at the score like one year by the time I was working with them. Just interacting with those guys different guests that we come in studio kind of take away a lot of that. I think the first time I'm wanting was kind of like that too. Dave wanstead was another example of that. Yeah I remember as a kid. I don't remember how we got tickets but like with one of my baseball. Teams got tickets to a recording of the Dave wanstead show and it was after. I want us. Who were they playing? They blocked a field goal at the end of regulation to like to win the game. And it wasn't the packers won. I think I might even like the dolphins or something and I remember going there and thinking it was so cool the first time in front of a t be part of a TV audience and all that kind of stuff. So they're not like the biggest names in the world that really got me but like it's ones with like personal connections for sure. Mng's some guys that might be a little lesser but you just realize how cool they our pet. Manley has every reason in the world to be a jerk if you really wanted to. I mean he played the most games embarrassed history. Long snapper for the bears forever. If they were ever to put a long snapper in the hall of fame he would be inconsideration for that. You would have to assume I mean the long snapper award for the best long snapper in college. The Patrick Manley Award. He is one of the nicest guys regardless of former athlete or not that I have worked with in any capacity and I love that dude so part of what I liked about it is how it Kinda stripped away some of that that gloss that all the celebrities. Have of just yeah. They're still just kinda looking to be normal people just like us in every instance they can. Yeah I haven't seen the the Michael Jordan last dance thing. It's on my list of stuff to watch because I don't actually watch. Tv Did you have many any any or many experiences with Michael Jordan and be well passes career but fallen MJ. Have you watched documentary? Oh Yeah I watched. I watched the last dance. I recorded a podcast last night with Jack Silverstein who's one of the Best Chicago? Sports historians out there. He's actually in the middle writing a book on the Bulls Dynasty so he had some great insights. That'll be posting basketball camp later today. Also and So but I haven't interacted with him personally But the random everyone says when news happens you know what the hell put a call into one of Jordan's people so like you. Do you do that and you just wait to hear the Dow just to say you did it. But that's about as close as I've gotten. I mean other people on those teams I've had conversations with purdue who's been the victim of some Jordan abuse but also just I thought he was one of the more underrated people that gave some quotes in the last dance. Because he wasn't there a lot but like what they chose to use from him was like really perfect in sync and what he was able to say and I thought it worked really. Well I've been I've been following. I watched I'm through episode nine so I've got the last one two finish up but as curious how. How did you feel about how did you do? You like how it was done I had you know going into it. I had different expectations of what it actually was surprisingly enough. I thought I was really expecting more total team bowls and more ninety eight bowls and I was in. You got everything Jordan. I mean it was everything Jordan back to you. Know the infamous like that embellish story getting cut from the Varsity team which wasn't neo. He just didn't make Varsity as a sophomore. Which everybody knows is like okay? Then you just played. Jv right lane. It's some major slight against his career but How'd you feel about how I forget the directors named Jason Jason. Something how'd you feel about how he did? I thought at times they got stuck between. Do you do this on the ninety eight bowls for the people that were mostly there for it or do you also kind of do some of the Jordan stuff for the younger generation? That doesn't really know as much or and I feel like some of that got stuck in? I agree that a lot of ninety eight stuff got lost in translation. Because this isn't my how much of a spoiler alert this is for you but just you don't get any real white Ron Harper and Luc. Longley starters I'm at team. Obviously they weren't the most important is but Ron Harper. The most he's mentioned is as Jordan's Gulf buddy and as the guy that was pissed that he didn't get to guard Jordan for the for the infamous game winner shoddy low. That's right. Ron Harper was nineteen five and five guy for a decade before he got to the Bulls. People don't remember that because it was with Cleveland. And with the clippers like he he was a real dude for a decade and then just his importance to the switch. Ability of that team was huge for the Bulls affect that they were able to switch everything. I mean it's even gets brought up now mind you. It was a play that the Bulls ended up losing on when Reggie Miller went to two handed shove into the chest Jordan for that game game for winner.

"Do. It's just very long very cold. If you're playing shortstop two games it's probably a lot different than if you have a crappy first game you can like redeem yourself. You have a good first game because I'm a go eight for eight today but and then the big thing. That pro bowl is the big Dan. Pro Bowl obviously is the the fact you have to get up early and and screw you normal routine up and see the sun. I just hailing under the sun as a kid. That's normal but in the pro ball games a night game and that coolness and dislike. There's no you get out there at eleven. Am and you're like. Oh God where am I? What am I doing? Why is this? Why so hot. Why am I S- wedding and that's like how you feel the whole day because previous them same you go to bed at midnight and then you like slowly easing your routine the next day but no you gotta get the nine thirty and beat the Ballpark at ten or something. And then your games. At one breakfast foods smell in the clubhouse. I'm not a huge breakfast food person. So it's I smell bacon and eggs and then go play baseball. I sound like a spoiled Brat right now but you sound like that's my opinion on doubleheaders. I just I just genuinely hated doubleheaders. The last half last third my as a kid. I liked them. But if you go to a major league game we get back there just know that every player hates their life. When it's a double header. They hate they hate it. The Sun the mercilus nothing. Nothing is more annoying than the than the early day game when it's Camp Day and every the eleven. Am Tuesday. Ill where every kid's camp in the Tri County area brings their day campers in their in their shirts in there like same colored shirts puts them in a puts them in a big group in the stands. And there's twenty five hundred little kids not paying attention to the biologists whizzing passer face in their screaming all while the camp counselors are crying in the last row because they cannot stand their lives at the current moment. Glide thing is worse. Yeah and for people who maybe think this is another swill spoiled person. Take I really like kids like I always have I. I know everyone's different. In what age group. They really like enjoy. I really like younger kids. I think they're funny. They say the stupidest stuff. Because that's just like what you are when you're when you're growing up and like I don't mind like I. I like the like younger kids that I worked with. But the camp environment at these Games. What would you end up getting as a player is like you know a foul welcomes over there in the bullpen? And you get thirty or forty kids run over and scream at the top of their lungs to get the ball at their little high pitched voices. And it's like I would like all you individually like thanks for coming but You gotTa Stop Four Mentality Ming. Yeah it's just a it's it is a rough morning. It's great to see the kids the Ballpark I sign autographs. Like I love you and all that stuff I would sign a lot for those early day games and we tossed balls in the stands but just that like the. I think the minor league ballpark behavior has changed over the years where kids run over and they like kind of aggressive sometimes about asking for fouls instead of being polite and there's story. I've shared before it on on this podcast but we were this. This girl just plate is like a fiddle. It was the eighth inning or something. We're in southern Maryland. And they this big lake concrete embankment. So there's like you know like ten feet up. You can see the bands looking down. She usually warm up and this little girl. I don't know how old she was. Maybe like six. But she's real tiny she she walks over and she she she just kind of crossing your legs because he's kinda nervous like talk to us and she goes. Hey I'm like. Hey It's you and she goes I. I just WANNA to tell you. I think you're great. And then she runs back to your like your parents and I was like I need to get that girl a ball. Where's of all? She needs a ball and I found it. I called her back and a but does like moments like that. I love like the kids are awesome like they see themselves in you like you see yourselves in them. Like it's such a cool thing but then you also get a lot of little kids it just like I wish parents had games would just Even playing a game like hey go like give the player compliment like just go be asking them something that they like to know. Ask them what pitches they throw. It's cool when the kids take interest in us and are just like polite and we'll come over and whatever because you get worn out a hundred forty games of kids running over and screaming kind of demanding you throw in the fat wallet just like it wears you out over time and it's hard even when you like kids like I do to just be like come on. I like you know some of these minor league. Parks aren't very conducive to privacy either. So like I remember playing in parks where you had to literally walk through the fans to get back to your clubhouse and I for I would always sign always be the one last ones out there signing whether whether I signed for that kid look previous twenty days or not. You decide the autograph. You feel grateful that somebody's actually asking. Because now in my bobby Stevens autographs are trading for between zero on. It will even like when you play on the team with like Manny Machado. An and all these big leaders like those. Those autographs are also worthless when they're on a on a plastic bought baseball that they handed out and it's got mud on it because the kid was playing catch with it. But it's funny. It's funny you say the little girl because you have to be weary as a player you have to be weary of the autograph sharks that are sending the little kids over and paying five bucks to get autographs from you or baseball's from you while the nobody's I didn't have to worry about that so well the baseball's but Yeah the little kids those day games when they're ice cream covered hands and this reaching out and grabbing you like. I like kids as much as anybody else but not when they're reaching out and grabbing me what they're sticky paws just A new rant. We're we're we're GONNA rining. We're whining oral said. I like kids. Appreciate the fans don't Love Day Games Dolla headers. That's all you need to really take from the story anyway. Back to where the doubleheader started you know if if your take yourself back to you know a senior college senior high school. Are you going to go to a school like a mask like this? We may know that the chance of Go into a regional. You know not that. That's the end all but something for. Yeah if you options school a school be in school. A has no postseason. It's not ideal one It's I think it's going to be very difficult. The entire the entire conference. You said Yeah. It's just another obstacle when you're when you're amid major for recruiting You know I keep up with recruiting a lot because I have youth teams. They just extended the dead period Through the end of June so nobody can be schools. You know the dead period is designed to level the playing field between the you know the top twenty schools in the country. And the you know the the Max schools of the world try to make it a little bit even and now you're not even letting these guys can't have people on campus that can't go out recruiting essentially you have a very limited window to find. The bus players and those players are now being scooped up by the bigger schools. And now you've got this to deal with it's just not you're not making it easy for any of these. Max Goals to to recruit which is not gonNA give them as. There's plenty of good baseball players that that come out of those conferences that are gonna end up going somewhere else. Yeah Bobby I do things to announce really yeah. I'm going to start advertising mortgage. They just Just to kind of release the marketing. But I'm into online summits coming up later The end of this month or early next month. So one is this Debate series called the King of the hill. And it's by. The company called the experts summit and their ideas. It's like a bracket format where they have in this one. It's all pitcher pitching minds. They have like a debate bracket so I'm going to be debating Brent poor CEO who is Pitching Guy well-known on the Internet He's the founder of top veloce dot. Net does a good job like he's super like Well known for a reason Pitching guy so he and I will be debating on some on yet to be determined topic but then whoever wins goes and debates the winner of their debate match so interesting form. I think that's kind of cool. Curiously how it will go first time to use my philosophy degree for anything relevant except for just destroying you here on the show constantly. I feel bad for that guy that that Brett Guy. I don't even know what you're going to be talking about. I'm I'm difficult. I'm difficult for sure it's it's going to be. It's going to be a difficult debate for him but good for you. I mean that's going to be a novelty watching I'll be watching somebody else. Get rimmed apart. That's I'll take great pleasure. Yes so so. That's one them. That's on June seventh. I think my debate my first debate is June eighth at eight forty five pm but checkout experts summit so it's act. Prt Summit on twitter and then in another one it's a softball summit about recruiting and That's coming up the end of this month. I believe and I'll be actually doing two different shows in it. I'll be doing a live. Live our presentation on softball throwing in health fielding interacts with softball throwing stuff. Which is what I talk a lot about them on my youtube channel and then I'll be talking about the mental. The mental game. Another one in a prerecorded session so that will be pretty cool so I got a chance to do that. I appreciate Nick Zito. If you're out there he's also in the summit he suggested meet the organizer and she took me. So I appreciate that so It's lobby sending that around. So if your listener on your email list or whatever I'll be sending Info about that in case you want to attend but seems like a lot of good minds in both Debate will the debate and the the softball summit. So that'll be cool. But yeah the softball WANNA be interesting. I don't think people realize how much different softball recruiting is than baseball recruiting. Just from a just how young actually go. So what do you got on saw? So what do you got on Sophomore Recruiting So I've got a couple of girls do softball lessons by me and They've got one very.

"Long yet again the countdowns sure when we actually go live because I know firm but welcome it is Friday may fifteenth. This is the morning brushback. I'm your co host. Dan Blue and I'm joined remotely by Bobby Stevens on Chicago. Bobby how you doing man and you'll good morning. Good Morning Sir. So we have a guest list Friday which I'm personally delighted about. I've enjoyed our guests but I want some quality time with my co host. You know it's just like we don't get as many time together man. It's been a long time since we've argued one on one. Well speaking of that I heard the podcast came after you pretty hard the other day about our president's golf habits this podcast. Twitter is really stirring the pot. He's coming after you so he said that it might have. Its own so he said you were unhappy with the Governor Pritzker family being in Florida. And then he asked if you were as unhappy with the president constantly being in his His Little Mayor Lago and golfing like every other day. And want to know how you felt. You know oddly made good point right. Yeah he he he or she. Whatever has has shares odd an odd assimilation with you. It's you know I'm not going to point any well. It's not surprising that a podcast and spirits rising to sentence would inhabit a marvelous personality. Like me with just the on. This podcast is not quite where these comments are coming from. I don't know where these thought. I don't think it's a far stretch of that. Would be designed in my image. I mean I look at these body I find it asked. Bobby I mean it's it's soothing is what it is. I find it. Odd that the podcast also tweets from the DC area. I mean just an interesting. It's an interesting side. Note that he or she decides that decided to just make residents in DC. I can't remember if the podcast knew it was doing or if it is because it has three accounts that it covers just happen to do it on the podcast but but yeah no. I mean I think in fifty years. It's very likely that in La Terminator World where humans are being oppressed by robots. It's very likely that they'll be look they'll look like me. It's very likely I do. I do have this. I do have the on. The is easy on the eyes when you're being oppressed and making pyramids or whatever robots would have you read when he's when he's dictating our everyday lives this morning. Brushback podcast videos. Why are you doing this? I'm not Dan Anymore. I I do get I do get the slightest bit of anxiety when I tweet something out and I I second pause and think would account today tweet that out from because I have the my personal account team account the brushback in there's an all the burner accounts I liked to. I like to troll our former guests on all those burder account. So what are we talking about today? Sir We've got a lot of stuff to talk about this. Mlb Proposal Trevor. Bauer and Blake's now just going off on on social media Some good points and bad points. We'll talk Mac. My former conference mid American conference doing away with their postseason tournaments for eight or baseball and softball included So making it that much more difficult to make it to the to the regionals for if you're baseball or softball team at at-large bid then we'll get an at large bid which is nearly impossible from mid major school will probably jump around to a few other topics but I want to start off with them. I'll be stuff so have you been keeping up with with the trevor. Bauer Twitter Ranson and such. I mute him. I think I think I met him on twitter. I'm not a fan of anything that comes out of his mouth in general but film in so this. Mlb proposal came out and we were talking a little bit off air. That if anybody knows exactly what's happening with this proposal please send it over to us. I'm seeing the fifty fifty split of revenue as the big contention point And Trevor Bauer in Blake. Blake SNELL ARGUING. That they've already agreed to a pro rated pay-cut you know. They're gonNA half games and she could have their salaries which to me. Sounds very fair. Now I don't know what I don't know where the holdup isn't there But it sounds like that's not quite the case in players are only going to get fifty percent of the revenue revenues zero from my understanding. The players would play essentially for free. And nobody wants to do that. No well I heard Blake SNELL's comments and I saw many of the responses to it which he's like. I'm know there's going to be more risk. I'm not going to go out there and get sick for that and I think that's a pretty tone deaf way to go about this. If I was a player in the major leagues right now I would probably say nothing about a lot of this but I would be very wary about talking about how much risk. I'm assuming which is not nearly as much as a grocery store worker who I think everyone appreciates that. There's a lot of people keeping the world or running by you. Know taking care of our sick in the hospitals all the hospital workers are putting themselves at risk every day and then all these other essential workers at target at the grocery store at everywhere that we still need to go. The risk is extremely high. And so then you get a privileged major league baseball players making Blake's now makes six million million million a year. Something like something like that and you refuse to accept his risk for five million measly dollars for three months work. That's just like not the right sentiment to express to the world. That's maybe the one to express your buddies in private and then not say that in the real in the real world so I get that that now one counterargument was well these people who are working whatever the job is. They're doing their normal job in getting their normal. Pay Like a nurse's making her normal salary. Now Okay they're not taking you pay-cut I get it so if you ask to take fifty percent. Does she still assuming that? Risk which is vastly higher than what a major league baseball player would go through fair fair question but yeah I just think it's a I think that's a poor way to go about this whole dialogue. It's like everyone wants sports back and players need to understand that their job is as an entertainer there. There isn't anything beyond being an entertainer. They might think something bigger but it's not sports have always been entertainment. And that's that's just what it is so they're asking like all this is not. It's obviously it's a job. It is entertainment and so I just think that there's a little lack of sensitivity which from turbines not surprising because he seems just tone deaf like all the time and lots of strange things that make no sense. But I don't know what's your what's your take on it. If you had the Blake. Snell one is is brutal Optics are terrible with with what he said and and I don't think he's wrong. It's just the opposite of it are bad. Like I don't know where Tony Clark is Tony Clark ahead of the MLB toadies. He needs he needs to put a to rank to to corral these guys in and just tell them look our messaging is if it's safe than than we have a good chance playing if it's not safe and we're not gonNA play the point home. I need my money. I Want my money because what Blake. Snell said the I read his. And if you haven't seen his video tweeted it so he did it on twitch or did on one of those you know whatever. The kids play video games on. I don't have video games but crazy you ha you cannot first thing out of your mouth is. I'm not playing for less than what I'm supposed to get because then then arguments shifts from not as it safe. But what's the right dollar up the okay so if you get a certain dollar amount like you should play and forget everything else like? There's so many things so many layers of this And I'm and I'm very hesitant to side with billionaire a third a group of Thirty Billionaires. But if if you're in a business and you're looking at this and say look if we don't play this year the each one of our teams gonNA lose a five hundred million dollars but if we do play at these current conditions worst we set to lose eight hundred million dollars like logically. It makes no sense to play if you're the billionaire owner. I don't care how much money you have. Nobody just throwing money out the window so I I understand where there needs to be some compromise on both sides and the players have compromised. You know. They're getting a paraded salary which I don't know why that would be considered a compromise of any sorts. Like why would you get the ten million dollars? You're supposed to get feeling playoff games. There's no reason to get that money like you get what you you know. Baseball for a long time has been no salary gap guaranteed contracts. Like yeah and I was thinking about that too. The whole it's like footballs doesn't have guaranteed contracts. So you get hurt or whatever you like. And I don't know how the football contracts worth exactly but you're right. The guaranteed contracts thing is great. So you can. You're guaranteed you're over the next five years or get hurt and earn no revenue like everyone has that protection and you know you get you get career ending injury like you're signing. You know Mike. Trout goes down. Tomorrow doesn't play for the next two years. He's collecting that money. He was signed for now. Granted the team might have some kind of insurance claim or something like that to recoup those funds but for the most part that money's all come into isn't have to worry about your football player you might have a small percentage of your money guaranteed but the rest of that you know ten million dollar contract. You have gone later. And you're you're basically done at that point. Yeah Yeah and of course. This is not surprising and this is social media. I mean players are on the web more than than they have in which is a good thing but at the same time just like any other any other group or organization in any profession. You just have people that dislike. Have Little Emotional intelligence. I think to Ribera leads. The leads the charge there at times and it sounds like Blake. Snell to does too. They just don't have the emotional intelligence. Say maybe I shouldn't say it in this way and be really insensitive being a multimillionaire young athlete. Maybe I shouldn't phrase it that way. Maybe I should just be diplomatic about it because I'm very well paid for doing something that everyone would like to do. And is a very cool job but again like I mean if people the post office who are going off on crazy rants doing weird stuff and just being like a psychotic person people Any job that just like have little emotional intelligence about how they interact with..

"And yet to get to six full years to make a free agency which could be twelve years or so for a lot of guys so in obviously there's arbitration. There's a lot more ways to get paid earlier now than there were before which is good but my point is that you suck up the twelve hundred dollars per month paycheck for a couple of years because suddenly if you do things right and you're lucky you might get that four million dollar for your paycheck. It's a lot like an entrepreneurs sort of exponential salary growth right so one way to look at it. That's just my way to look at and I know a lot of guys look at it the same way. They don't really care that much because they can. They can scrape by and they can make things work. Of course there's other guys that have a wife and kids and they can't make it work and it's tough and so for those people and for everyone you deserve to be paid fairly right. I think we all we already on that. But when when you're not just like when you're not paid fairly then it becomes up to you on how you frame the situation and again for me and for you and for some others. We kind of framed it as like look. I love what I'm doing. I know I'm getting abused financially. But it's not gonna it's not gonNA bring me down. I'm just GONNA keep moving forward and do what I do. It's it I I was talking to my one of my buddies texting back and forth Who didn't play professional baseball and Eyebrow up the the college baseball aspect where they're talking about paying college athletes. It's like be careful what you wish for. Rada you know big you want to get paid. Okay we'll college baseball programs around the country historically lose money for their college you WanNa you we. All the sudden need to get paid well all the sudden. We don't have baseball anymore like that. We're going to kill Kazakh source for sure cuts revenue Minor Leaguers. I know you're As much as we all wanted to get paid more you know independent balls a prime example like you WanNa get paid more than independent. Paul what do you think these mostly mostly teams are running at a loss. They are so if we're going to if we're GONNA go by the balance sheet you WanNa get paid more like the unemployment line is going to be paid more. 'cause WE CAN'T WE CAN'T AFFORD LIKE. I can't afford to give you two grand a month or three grand a month and then you know I'm I'm Jeff Passan responded to this guy and he's like you know it's a win because there was a real possibility you were going to get nothing. Yeah for sure No assists perfect. Nothing is perfect. So were Take the small victory and hope that it improves over time which I allow these minor. Leaguers like the improvements aren't going to be seen in their playing lifetime. Their improvements are going to be seeing for the guys come after them. Then that's something. That's that's why you know. Professional baseball players strike like that's why professional sports strike. They're trying to better the future. Like not necessarily GONNA sue those improvements for themselves so this is a big win for guys that are currently playing chant. Absolutely for I'll take four hundred bucks right now. I mean especially in the landscape. There's I have friends that are laid off their restaurant industries. All these all these industries have nothing coming in and there is no parents. Mlb Company has got the deep enough pockets to be like look. We know this is Shitty for you like we'll take the hit. Here's a little bit of money every month. So hopefully we get back on our feet. Most of these businesses are taking out those small business loans or shutting the doors. And that's just real life. It's not an ideal nothing ideal. This is a good situation for a lot of minor leaguers. I can't imagine getting a four hundred dollar check every week and thinking this is bullshit is it's not. It's your lucky you really did. And there's and there's a lot of people on everyone at least a handful of people that will complain about what they get. There's just those people out there right. So they're like I was complaining about a parent who is complaining about guys getting their eligibility back in College Baseball. I was looking through the early twitter comments of this breaking news. Nca says they're probably GonNa let all all athletes get a year of eligibility back. There was a dad who is complaining about it. He's like well. What about all the kids have been underclassmen? There have been waiting their turn and now these seniors who won't even go through the draft. They're gonNA come back and it's like this is clearly fair for everyone and sorry that now. Your kid has to wait in line. A little more or he describes the occasion and be better. Because there's always wait in line. Yeah there is. No one has no wine right in sports. There's no line it's just most freshmen. Aren't as good as college. Juniors that's that's what it is but there's no line you see you saw last year like that guy for Vanderbilt Kumar rocker. No Line like why is he not have okay? He just dominates everybody right because the letter. Yeah no nothing is Fahrenheit or it's Just you rise or shit or get off the pot. Nothing's fair I understand where you might think it's unfair but it's not that's what it's why is it. More Fair for your freshman son has been waiting in line than it is for the senior. Who was already waited? That could wait in line. This is a shot and always gonNA get screwed now. It's nothing's fair so this is the best you have to get the best situation for the majority of people in in in whatever we're talking about and this is what they decided it's it seems equally fair for all parties. Yeah absolutely go with it and as we're about to sign off here but but yeah I mean at one of the results of this all this litigation all these this advocacy for players writes in the minor leagues. What it's GONNA LEAD TO IS GUYS. That were good enough to play. Pro Ball in our generation will not be good enough to make the cut to say that there are a pro ball player in five years because those short in the draft which is are we. We know that's coming. They'll pay marley better. Pay Minor Leaguers better and so the standard will rise and so now guys that were good enough to get drafted and be a pro for a couple of years They won't be good enough anymore and the bar will be higher and it was because of all these efforts. Now so there's always there's always a that's not a silver lining what's what's the opposite of a silver lining there's like a hoop colored lining like a shit guideline the bad. It's a more Lord flavored lining the MILORD flavored linings. All this but that's how it was. I mean you know you. Don't see the draft at the quantity of players in football basketball and grade. They're very different. Sports Developmental Curve is different baseball. There's always going to be a higher volume of players because it's just such a hard game. There's more injuries and there's just a lot So will never be six rounds like it is in the NFL and with guys going right to the big leagues but it's going to be shorter smaller minor leagues and there's going to be higher level higher pay and so great. Just know that if you're an eighth grader. You should welcome the increase in Product now go to game and you're seeing the best dude's not do that are just bodies because we need a body. So if you're an eighth grader. Your tenth grader. Just know that the draft and we're GONNA take a pro ball player might be significantly higher by time you get there so start working. Start working hard now and it's been it altogether evolution of sports. It's significantly higher. Now than it was in the seventies it was significantly higher in the seventies and it wasn't twenties Reality people get bigger faster stronger. Now they're gonNA get bigger faster stronger with less spots won't back in the twenties. They were making their own. Bats like Bobby Stevens in their garage and swing out. Swinging these plantations shaped pieces of Garbage Allen. Feel bad technologies improved. And you don't have to swing a bat that you made yourself so rank. His bats are harder because finishes better. Yes yes you don't know you're talking about all right. Well thank you for tuning in today. This was Episode six of the brushback. "Bobby Stevens. Dan Blewett four hundred dollars a week. Go get a job like you're you're tight. You you have expired. Professional Baseball saw. Woody got on that. Yeah I mean that's I think that's you and you this now on the head last week or in previous episodes were doing so many per week. It's hard to keep track of like this summer. Six Man But you know when you when you put more money in the equation. It's just going to force everyone to be better like you said if you compare this to hockey like they're minor leagues are Japan's Minor Leagues where you can make a one hundred ten. K. If you're paying all these guys how much money they better be good. And if you're not good see you later? You're not getting the opportunities in the long term and you played in affiliated Minor League Ball so you know that even guys who are like a thousand bucks though still get maybe a year. Maybe a couple of years like you have you have more opportunities than people realize but if you're suddenly getting a good amount of money and it's much more cutthroat they're just gonNa they're just going to really look into who we want. Who Don't and there's a lot of filler of unfortunately in it's a tough term because they're so people but there's a lot of guys who were filler right. Well I'm looking at. I'm looking at one of the comments. You know I assume he's a minor leager. Blue checkmark guy says how is that fair to the guys That you're paying guys at all levels the same amount y'all you you can't have it both ways dude. You can't want money and then they offer you money and then all of a sudden it's not enough money because you played higher than than this guy like. That's just I'm sorry like everybody's making concessions either. Take the free money. They're giving you because they don't have to give you money like as much as people think like they deserve this money. You don't deserve shit. You're not you're not working. You're not doing anything else. Spring training is different story. Like guys don't get paid in spring training arable and that's terrible great That's that's a different discussion. You know they're going to start paying you now today. Four hundred bucks a week like your your minor league season. You're not playing. You're not generating any money like you. WanNa talk about fair like the only people taking a hit whether you get it there. One percenters right. They make the most money in the world. They're billionaires but they don't give Why why is it different? Why the rules different you know? Don't don't come at all of a sudden your AAA guys. You should get six hundred bucks a week but they ball guys you get four hundred like that's bullshit you're getting you're getting free money so either. GonNa take the money that you didn't expect to get you that you really don't deserve to get or you're just get ordered complain about it like they're doing. I think four hundred bucks a week is a good thing for a Lotta guys playing minor league baseball. Like I'll take four hundred bucks a week right now. Like why who's not GonNa take four hundred bucks week. It's like these guys are GonNa sit home and not get a job if they feel like they need a job to make more money. This is just trying to supplement some income that they would have coming in. It's a I think it's a good thing that they did it. I think there's GonNa be a unrealized consequences for some of these guys may or may not get released. That's going to be like a cold hard reality that they're going to get a phone call saying hey you're not you don't have a spot anymore. Now that's bullshit right you're gonNA fire somebody in the midst of everything going on but people are getting laid off left and right you know. There's a from a lot of jobs. It's not everybody can work from home. Baseball players included. Yeah you'RE GONNA be you're in that boat I think people that are applying right now. I think he'd be grateful for that money. You know. See it as a win and it's a it's a long term process special minor league baseball. We talked about it before. Like this is not a not a quick fix. The minor leagues have been taken advantage of. You know in a lot of people's eyes for since the dawn of Baseball. Yeah absolutely and it's a with the voice of dissent so again like with all these comments only a small percentage of people comment right and so only small percentage of people are voicing their distaste with. Oh I should have gotten more money because I'm higher up the ladder all that stuff. I'm sure the vast majority of people appreciate the way you said like. Hey we we understand that. This probably wouldn't happen two years ago. You know we probably don't WanNA got paid like they didn't really care at all but you know baseball rights have come up a lot you know. And and part of that's the reason the part of the reason a lot of people been lobbying for them hard right so one of them is a sportswriter. Name's Emily Walden. She's put out a lot of piece of content for the Athletic. She does a great job. He's really advocated for Marley rights. And a bunch of others obviously the lawyers and the Bass player's filing the lawsuit on behalf of everyone else. There're voice that's helped make this happen. Of course at the same time like I did a youtube video illness Maybe a year ago year and a half now which was like look. I don't feel wronged and this is my opinion. I didn't feel wronged by getting paid. Almost nothing like my first paycheck was to fifty five ten. Those two weeks pay my first year in independent ball on six hundred dollars per month salary and there was never a point where I really felt wrong and really cared looking back. Of course objectively like that's not a livable wage like A. We all knew that but at the same time with anything you can sort of. Take one point in my video. Which if you WANNA check it out so my youtube channel. It's about peanut butter and Jelly. Which is sort of like the the via the symbol. The symbol of Miley baseball. Yeah because that's all you can afford to eat so you're just making peanut butter and Jelly. So my point was that I took it sort of entrepreneurs approach in minor league baseball which again. That's not the way these owners should approach it when they throw away so much money on free agents and they have guaranteed contracts. And I mean there's so much money in baseball and so little money would take to fix the problem but for me. I was like look. It's just like building a business. When you start your own business you need to be prepared to not take a salary for a number of years right. And you've I'm sure you've gone through very lean times your academy my partner and I when we moved to our new facility. We didn't pay ourselves for six months and we drained our bank accounts. And that's a very common thing for every entrepreneur. But you do that. Because there's a bigger payoff at the end. You know you can get to the point where your employees run your business and you collect money every month. Lots of it without really having to do that much because it just kind of monitor operations or whatever you can sell the business and be a multimillionaire and so that early work where you're just scraping by and not taking much in salary. Is Building this thing and you can and you can make very strong argument as a minor league ballplayer that you're doing that same thing because if you put in the work and you really grind through it you spend one day in the big leagues and your salary if you go back to the minors jumps to what a minimum of like eighty thousand a year. Like suddenly you're making a minimum of like eleven grandma. I think it's like sixty percent of what you were making up in the big league. Something percentage scale. Yeah and you never go back down so if you get that one minute in the big leagues. Suddenly you're a well-paid Mar Leaguer for the rest of your life and obviously if you make it to the big leagues. You're making half a million dollars a year minimum salary. So you're suddenly making you know three or four grand a day and the you the potential for.

"bobby stevens" Discussed on The Morning Brushback with Dan Blewett

"This is episode five of the brush. Back podcast I'm here with a birthday boy bobby Stevens Bobby. Happy Birthday officially now. Thank you thank you so let me give you the tests that I give a lot of the kids that I work with. Which is are you an ice cream cake person or a real cake person. Ooh Real okay. Real quick I knew you're GonNa say that because you and I are just becoming enemies. More and more unreal to answer. It's the wrong answer. Ice Cream cakes. Unrealistic it's unrealistic. You scream with real gig first of all. It's not unrealistic. It's a thing that exists in the real world it has at least it's no no no no it was it was a. I mean I was eating ice cream cake. My official birthday cake since I was a kid and regular cake is like eating a sponge if I took so if I went to my pantry right now and I got a box of just granulated sugar and then I took out my mildew smelling sink sponge and I- sprinkled Chagrin at the you'd have regular birthday cake sounds delicious. I know I know but I anyway. I give this test to kids. I mean just like me breaking the icing like getting to know people in my gym. And I'd like this food food questionnaire Celeste quiz basically just lets me know if there are saying human being and what what other what other this earth that do you have on that list others as well. It can expand. It's usually a minimum four questions up to ten depending on my memory of my own questionnaire basically ice cream or real cake your preferred pizza topping site if he'd boxed pizza box macaroni cheese. Is it the classic like tubes shaped the shapes like spongebob or Dora the explorer or shells? It's spongebob absolutely okay. That's a good answer. Thank you your favorite breakfast cereal. Like sugary like thing you need is a kid on Saturday morning. Off Man captain crunch variants your feelings towards cottage cheese. Love it or hate it hate it. Usually very little in between no one's like I'm kind of like friends with cottage cheese now you. They're like despise it because textually in it's just like a gross food water. It's it's lumpy. It's tough to be water. It's brutal I personally like it but then follow question to that. One is if you do like cottage cheese. Do you like it on fruit. Which I think is ridiculous or have to put on fruit. You have to go through in the cottage cheese making that it just makes the texture worse. I don't think they go together. I eat it on either toast. Which makes a Lotta sense or whatever enough triscuits which pretty good flavor triscuits or last night had someone some Wheat Thins. That makes much more sense. It's a cheese. Cheese goes well with like savory stuff why would we? It's it's a lumpy water? It's it's lumpy water. It's disgusting. I mean I completely valid opinion. So that's fine but those the core ones I mean beyond that others others like how do you feel about salon? It's just it's it's not it's messy animated but are you on the people that believe the tastes like soap or real or just has like soap. Tomato tastes gross. It's always tastes gross. I just I don't WanNa know why keep your keep your leafy Greens. You're kind of neutral to Cilantro okay. It's just like an offensive taste of me in general. That's and I think it's that way for a lot of people that's interesting. I've never heard of Salon Bring Offensive. Really a lot of people they said. It's like a genetic thing where some people it tastes like soap to them. You've said you have a sense of palate. I guess but so that pretty much rounds off my questionnaire and then I can think of any others in the moment but official correct answers are search Pinon. But it's not really opinion like if you answer real cake the tubes macaroni and cheese cottage cheese on fruit. Then I like Kinda. Just don't trust you and near-zero your cereal is like regular cheerios raisin bran why Raisin Bran I like it but if that's your cereal as a kid then it's a little questionable kid is really trying to keep himself a regular like ten percent of the antennas you're a grape nuts or something the incentives you're into the percent bran flakes but the official records for cereal is cinnamon toast crunch which is just objectively the best serial that's ever been created use a very specific tastes. I mean acceptable in the realm as Captain Crunch Cocoa puffs Lucky charm any. Those are acceptable. Answers were actually crunch. Berries is is the accent. Oh Captain Crunch. Pretty good pretty. Also Golden Grams was the my favorites very underrated. I think will under the radar too big too big. Yeah grams are like. They're like one. He won on a spoon at. That's true their main flaws that they turned soggy like literally hitting the milk. They're like a pack a packing peanut like they dissolve in milk. Pretty much all right so when you eat guards so when you eat. Cereal do consistently add milk. So it's not just one big swimming pool of milk adding milk. It'd be more of a swimming pool but you go like you'll like a full bowl of cereal and a half full milk so you can kind of keep some of them crunchy. I understand I'm a minimalist with milk. I tried to get the the bare minimum amount to like get it done but I put it on. I put it on the beginning. I don't add milk later. So you one shot one shot either. Guess writer you ruined the morning while the real travesty is for some people who put the Milken I which is just a battling at is absurd makes no sense no sense at all but some people are putting the ice in seconds when you pour a drink. Yeah like it's ridiculous so anyway. So what are we talking about today? Appear Bob I mean we need. This is a good transition into my brother-in-law's my brother-in-law yesterday texts me. We talked about our. I talked about Iceland let me phrase. I stumped for Joe Mauer's hall of Fame Status on the last episode a unbeknownst to me. I have now attached myself at the hip with the Joe our hall of fame drain So he had been text me back and forth and tells me he would say Yada. You're Molina all day over. Johm our Yada Better catcher the the more hall of Famer the Catcher so I threw it out on twitter in obvious of poor poor poll. Wording on my end but your question made no sense. It was intentionally eight. Essentially works out intentionally vague. Because I I generally WANNA know. I WANNA know who's who do you have? Do you. Have Joe Mauer or you have the ear Molina and looking up this morning so let me give you some let me do some stats before you answer here. I won't tell you who but both were rookies in two thousand. Four at the age of Twenty One..

"The bat is hard Sunday. You're seeing the you know the Friday night starter that you saw on the SEC UC him every day every inning in pro baseball right the best one and as a pitcher. You're seeing the three-hitter from every team so every spot in the lineup. That's how the funnel narrows So they act like you said like these fringy college baseball players. You might play pro if they're not getting those that year to try to pack it in and get some chances and affiliated ball. They're gonNA really independent. They're going to be stilled. Like there's not there's only so many roster spots there's no meaning I think it'd be fair to say that most MLB organization two hundred just GONNA have open doors next year because they'd have investments in these guys that missed the year. Yeah saying they're going to not really just hand. Sign the seniors nectar. It's GONNA be tough to even get into an affiliated organisation. Yeah somebody logjam everywhere. Which and I I remember I was very unhappy with this one twitter threat and there was a parent who clearly he was upset that they were giving seniors their eligibility back or everyone eligibility back and he was complaining. He's like these seniors. They come back there already. Dead like they can't. They're not getting a draft. No one wants to sign a twenty three year old college fifth year senior. He's like the you know this shouldn't happen. These guys you know. We got to look to the younger generations and I look at his twitter profile and he's got a high school senior and he's got a college sophomore. Those are good some like clearly. You want your kids to get through playing time now like you wanted to be their time. You don't want some other someone above them to come back and now steal beginning that they were waiting for but as you guys both know. There's no waiting your turn in Improv sports. If you don't like it it'd be better than them and that and that's again like back to freshman example if you're eighty nine. He's a freshman. And you're you know. Yeah they're seniors are coming back. Well you can be better than them be nineteen ninety-three with a slider and just be better than those seniors and comeback seniors. And then you can sit the bench and I'll play because I'm better than you. I mean that's unfortunately the absolute kids have the have three underclassmen. There's no better than the seniors. Come back there's no blanket answer if you're if you're good make a decision based on where you're at work are now if you're if you're mediocre make where you're at. There's no blanket era. I mean financially. It's GonNa it's financially so to speak more than anything that kids eighty to ninety in the division wants to go into a game eighty percent you are going to get eighty percent come out of junior college are can you afford to go to junior college. Maybe a junior college doesn't have financial a money for you or even though it might only be six seven eight grand. It's still money. Money's not especially now money's money talks able like money there in the money money. What do we say the other day people? People sales thrive drive business. Drive Mellow. Yeah I mean strong speak on the the pecking order in baseball. I mean baseball FEHR. No look at Bobby Stevens. The Guy Ahead of city attorney Frederick so many times because of the draft status. The Guy was playing awesome. And you'd get on a roll in high and now you gotta sit for five days thing or even leader pick. I mean I just try to get an Dohar hard and I was in ten th because I didn't want anybody to take that guys that and eat my lunch money and then you need to chill out man when you're pumped up and you go in and dominate it. That's that's my money. That's my life if I don't pitch good and get a little fired up then I'm GonNa sit there and just ease it in there. That's not I'm in Tallahassee. And then whatever I do after have a beer and do a few things. That's fine. I'll go home sleep and be ready to play next. I mean you can honestly say I was never on the deal and never not one time. Turn down the ball. So what else do you want the organization? That's where I'm still at a loss like I was never heard until all quiet sometime Here's the here's the issue with the two affiliate a guys talking right now that like two idiots We were we were with Baltimore. So quick story is in spring training. I'm standing in the Infield like we're doing our whatever work and I'm standing there with a guy who came from the as and a guy who came from the braves and myself both older than me probably six years old me out John. I'll tell you who they were afterwards. You know both these guys and I got the quote other mouth was. What the fuck are we doing? And I'm like I'm standing there and it's like my second spring training and I'm like what are you talking about? And they're like what are we doing like what what is this? I mean we were. I was standing as a middle infielder watching pitchers on working field number two do. Pfp's like one threes or three ones or whatever the hell they were doing and we were just standing there and these guys were like this is shit show so the I had a back to that is like Sean Sutton never turn the ball down like I was sent back to wherever back to multiple times. It's like the organization we were with the Torius for have not having a plan. Like if like when I had my meeting in spring training with the head of the minor leaks. He didn't even know my name and I was like well. What do I have to do to get out of here? And he's like will you gotTa Wear. How did you get into? It was him in the hitting coordinator and they had my file. They're like looking at my numbers on the year before and they're like will like you need more at bats at this level is going to be a starter. They're like no so if a backup like why wouldn't my numbers clearly sit show that I'm good enough to back up moving up like move me up and put me at the backup at that level and I have a bunny in Chicago. Now who's with the Marlins who tells us told me a story about a third baseman and the guy was in double eighties due to the big leagues and the coordinator said You know. Hit Twenty bombs at three twenty. It's the only way we're GONNA get some big leagues. And he hit like three seventeen with like twenty two bombs gave him a call up. GimMe you we didn't have that like Sean. You're gonNA close you need to have on a sub to you get into September movie up. It didn't matter like either was no. I heard the phrase you know if you play well you get more opportunities and there was honestly a time when I was at the Orioles rose leading the league in triple crown numbers. I don't WanNa get into my own. Career exists irrelevant. But I was a triple. I was batting average home runs. Rbi's I led the whole league. We were in the Carolina League and I sat for seven straight days. And I I play everywhere like I put. Centerfield put me at first base shortstop. I played everywhere. It's like you can't find one spot in the lineup to put me at the arguably the best player in the League right now. Just numbers wise. So that's you know professional baseball's cutthroat. Everybody understands business and I get that with. Sean GETS ITS BUSINESS. But if there's no clear outline of you know here's what you have to do to advance in your career. Then you're just sitting there with these two big league outing next me thinking what the fuck is going on here like. Why does your law lers? Were fillers for the guys that you've handpicked to move up the ladder which is a lot of minor league baseball. Don't need all these levels if you've only got two or three prospects team but you gotta give there's gotTa be something for these guys. Like guys play their way to the big leagues in all the time. I was with the braves for half a year and it was amazing. They told me the movie to Aa at the state and it was like two days after that day. They moved me up. I was hitting like Shit plan like Shit. But it was like you're gonNA move up and you're GONNA fill this role to fill the role you're GONNA be gone so like they did. It was able to handle that. Yeah I can it on if I fail I fail like that's fine but give me something. GimMe Dangle the carrot like if you if you can't do that then it's indicative of where that organization has been the last decade and a half. I mean how do you go from my ear with thirty five days more than likely the hardest relieving Thor and the organization that year maybe if not close get a token for two weeks to go up to aaa you just find then come back for the play offs and the next year. You don't even get to close in Aa we've signed we've signed guys from the nationals and other we sitting delay so there is back to normal reliever. There's this plan there was no you know. That's a factor when they didn't take your word your film and that kind of stuff like you for people who haven't played at level it's hard to find a corollary like in real life like that would never find business. He will be leaving. That company immediately. Like people want to have some idea whether they're doing well or not like am. I doing good at my job like my numbers. Say Like Tunein. These good right..
