"You know it's funny. I just had william. We were talking yesterday. And i was talking about. He look he was talking about the ovation. Heard scored his first goal. He can remember like it was yesterday. And i was just going back and watching video of the ovation in the chance when you had that hat trick and i imagine you feel the same way. What was it like in that moment. You know when. Do hear those ottawa fans doing that it was. I mean it was overwhelming. You come back and it was one hundred hundred days. I guess so you know from my last game obviously played that people forget they had played that one game in nashville on the road to get to get my feet wet and play my first game away from the media kind of stuff so you know i was back and i had a very good game national. I felt really good. I break way. I just missed and and i felt i felt like even with all that time off that something was building Scored scored that first one in I knew the i knew the fans. We're going to be great. I just i. I knew that was never going to be an issue. I just didn't know they were going to go so far. Above and beyond and they did and You know you score one and then scored too late and you can just feel the you can feel it in the building it was rising and and you get that third one and i just finally just a little too hard for me to hold it down any longer. It was authorized. It brought tears to my eyes. And i told my wife after like i said i am emotionally and physically right now. When i can't. I can't believe i have to try to sleep. Go right back to the ring for practice enough. I think the next game was Was probably my worst game in the eight games. Just i in fact to that level. Because i was so i still selective Emotionally like what do you do now. Right but but on that i mean that's just a night i will never forget. Did you like when you came back physically. Did you feel wh. How did you feel differently physically. Just from hockey playing perspective Strong i mean obviously the rest of the league playing every other night right. Yeah that's true. I yeah so. And i i left. I left california to rejoin. What i thought was rejoining the team on december twentieth. So i thought it was going to get a couple of practices in and then you know not jump back in but be the around the team Practice with the team maybe not travel but practice and all that and now is not the case. It was like two weeks. Have nothing to skating yourself in training two weeks of this two weeks. It was just so many hurdles that i had to clear Before i knew it was like two and a half months before i even saw the guy's right it was. It was getting ridiculous. And i felt the best i've ever felt because i did nothing but train lift weights and state. I mean that was it so while the other guys are all getting worn down by the the grind of eighty two games. I'm getting you know. I'm i'm in summer shape so i felt great. I felt like i felt like i had jump. I felt like my legs You know the best. They've ever been at that time of the year. And you know that's because of what is going through but You know it was just i. I felt mentally. I felt better and clearer. You know a lot of the program had to do with that so it was. The best never fell getting back to hockey. That's for sure so it's funny. It's interesting to hear you and you get you go back and you play nashville almost intentionally right like you know you can sneak back into the lineup. Essentially nash like how. How did you approach. How much of your store you wanted to share publicly versus unit. Was that a conversation that you had with danielle. How did that play out. Not not really. I don't think there is too much conversation to be had. Because i knew is going to have to come out right away and if you don't tell it then then people in media speculate and that's the worst thing you can have happened watching comes out it But i i was like okay. Listen you know. My issue is with alcoholics -iety. Ptsd know a couple other things that i was diagnosed with and learned about but alcohol was the stephanos right. And that's that that's an easy thing to tell people. You have an issue with sure. But what i don't want to happen. What say hey. I dealt with some things and some personal time and i'm back because then you'll of a sudden you know you gotta molly habit or tended never would have been true we would have assumed the worst we certainly. Yeah so that was news. Just no way around it and i knew i was going to have to be open and forthright and And now i'm glad i was because i'm now i'm seeing the other side of it. Were not only people in the media especially in auto handle it very delicately gave me gave me my peace after the first initial press conference but that being said they didn't press for more and more and they just let me play and and If i hadn't done that. I think there would have been questioned every david to answer. That just didn't make sense right. So at the risk of pressing for more and more i do wanna you had. It's interesting that's come full circle in detroit right we. You said you had a bit of a breakdown. Do you mind getting into like what that looks like to. You know so. I mean you know without saying too much i think. There's there's times within a year. That coaches coaches managing on understand that. They're the guys are going to have a few beers. Or whatever. And i've always been one of those guys that does and goes out with the guys and has a nice dinner and i think with a young team you're supposed to have. There was three days before a game. So the guys went to the lion's game You know i didn't go to the game. I had some other errands to run But that being said you know met everybody. Dinner drinks and just You know just another one of those where everybody goes home. And i'm like where else am going. What else am i doing Because i get to a point. Where that i've learned that there's just no shutoff. There's there's day goal until you can't and You know i did that. I was in my room and Woke up in the morning and you know is fine. I get home safe and everything so no issues. But i got to the rank and just like a few of the other guys gotta sweat out the salt. Say a and i just you know i. I knew that i couldn't really do. It was like digest. There's nothing here So many times you. You've got those days out but i was like okay. These days are becoming habit like these days are these days are lasting at the two or three of these days or whatever might be You're doing this three times. i'm not. They can't be doing this so I've already dealing with some stuff. I was already trying to trying to stop. Some stuff is already working through with a therapist and yeah just felt like not only on top of that. You know the guilt and shame that i had that i had to go. You know. be a veteran guy at the ring for those young guys shop to work but You know there is a anxiety and the panic attack that came with it and it all happens on the ice and thankfully happen very quietly because i was standing in the wind. Ain't nobody nobody was around. But this coach and i just said i gotta go it. I i'm getting off. This is going somewhere right. The second you know. Probably the hardest in the best decision. I've ever made at that time. Lee who helped you get through on that. The most i guess no real one person. I mean if you're talking about that day. It was pretty much a community effort to get to where i had to go And get on a plane that afternoon. But i mean it's.

"Presented by the athletic each week. We'll dive into the biggest stories in hockey while bringing in unique voices to entertain an explain all aspects of the game. Hey this is craig and welcome to this week's episode the full sixty. I am joined by bobby ryan who. I am thrilled to have him on this week for any any number of reasons plus. It's always good to chat with bobby. Just because he's a great dude. Bobby how are you. How's it going good. i'm good. I can't believe we take you. I don't know how long this has been going. Have to be a regular meal. Album just took me finding in detroit. That's right well you know it's funny. The what's happening the benefit for people that have podcasts. To cove it in the league shutting down was players. Have a little bit more time so when you ask for an hour. It's not an automatic. No which i've enjoyed like we've had some conversations so yeah we were just chatting so you're in nashville now. How is that going. It's been nice. We got here october. First in the goal is to just rent for a month in and we knew what the buyout we'd have to figure out where it was next readily next is just you know. Eight hours up the road but It's been a great month getting to know the area a little bit and you know. Retirement looming is coming. We're going to be down here full-time so We're pretty excited about the area. There's a there's a lot to do and the reserve retirement. I'm not ready to have this conversation about retirement. Bobby you gotta you gotta face facts right so i'm gonna play until they take by jersey but I starting to think about where we want to be long-term. Yeah so i. I wanna start rate with the buyout in ottawa. Maybe backtrack a little bit into ottawa. But when did you get word that this was liquids this something anticipated or can you just share that story a little bit league. How did you find out this was going to happen. With the time difference. I got a call out about seven o'clock in the morning On i guess it was probably the first date of buyout window right I think it was a friday morning and Actually just getting off the biking and getting my day started with my wife. And pierre called him let me know and it was about a you know minute conversation. So there's there's really not much. Okay what do you say really right. So said okay and thank you and good luck and that's it but Yeah it came as a complete shock. I there is no no word of word of mouth may agent or anything just Just a very very quick phone call. So i actually found out before agents and called him to let him know so visit. Yeah not not the call. I expected on that friday morning for sure but It is what it is. what can you do. Yeah and and so the interesting thing about the buyout. This has been such a weird summer anyways or some still calling. it's october. it's been such a weird off season at least i'm not calling you july first anymore. Free agent you know. You had a bit of a headstart in being able to have these conversations. What was that process like for you. Minimal to be honest with you. I mean not not because it wasn't interest or anything like that but i spoke with my agent quickly and you know within twenty four hours or a couple kind kick. The tires and and i didn't know i was allowed to start interviewing until a certain date like everybody else. I just figured i had to do that. But because of the buyout situation. I was able to get on the phone with a couple teams. Did that and i it's interesting. I've never been to free agency before. I've had six years and eight hundred seven years in ottawa. So this was a i. I guess to hear pitches. And you know when you guys it's going gonna be making a million a million five or whatever might be somewhere. The pitches are are long and outstanding or anything like that but Steph's was it was just an outstanding conversation so it was very I it was a fun process. I guess to hear other teams that are kicking tires in thinking about where you might wanna live for a year. Whatever it might be Detroit just made them most sense for so many different reasons. Yeah it was interesting right around when you're doing that you know we're a those of us that are covering free agency are making phone calls and i was trying to get a sense. It was right away like you know. I got the impression there was definitely multiple teams interested in. I was talking someone like you know. Bobby could be corey. Perry right like this could be a guy that goes in his on this on a cup contender and comes in a reasonable deal and provides that and so i think that's what i was picturing so i was surprised at detroit was the destination i i was imagining. Hey let's go to somewhere. That's knocking on the door. What how did that well. I think corey and his situation And we were compared a lot same agent and being close friends and all that so they used him as an example quite a bit but for me. I thought you know gorey's established and not that i'm not but i but had very different here for from your previous changed. And even though i got eight games in And played well and you know what four five points and goals and whatever Done that stretch. I i knew that. I needed to prove that there are still some high end. Talk in me yeah. I didn't want to go somewhere in in immediately. Be you know a a third fourth line guy. I still think. I can play in the top six nine. I guess you would look at it. In the steve made it clear that i can earn that there whereas other teams i talked to. I don't know if there is a lot of opportunity to move up And steve is honest and candid about the fact that. Listen if you're having a very good year and you wanna leave the line and i have offers. We can sit down and talk about those things and we'll do that But this this opportunity just gave me the most chance of. And i was excited to play with those guys with four five really really good young forwards there that that not only are they young but they've been illegally. Don't work until at twenty five. It feels like it's been in the league for ten years So i'm i'm looking for maybe having a chance to play at him or whoever it might be in that top six if i work my way in there and and proved that i can still score and still you know that housing legs left in hockey left and then worry that if something happens great if not i just stay with the detroit. I'm very happy about the situation there. It's over with now. Can you tell the some of the other teams where you're were looking at. I probably could. But i probably i had to take a thank. You know there was some other teams. And i'll let you know just for the sake of the guys that sign their a right right. Yeah yeah i'll i'll believe those teams out of it. But there was some interest some genuine interest in and i heard i really only heard one or two other teams out And and and you know there was some canadian teams but it was it was. My wife was adamant that we return to the states. And start setting up Life where we're going to be living forever so not a big thing It was interesting to get your perspective about. Steve is pitch Because i don't know we don't necessarily see that side steve rate. He's he's a pretty serious guy intense. You always done a great job as a gm In in it was the one thing that really stood out to me was you. You mentioned just his passion for the organization right which makes sense right but like what did that look like when you were talking to him. You can tell so far removed from being a player there but he still. You know even with other organizations in the time that he's worked in the league you can still tell the just.

"Seven hundred ninety street. So thank you get to eight hundred. Well See I. I'm definitely getting eight hundred. I just I. I'm very disappointed. That a Havemann at all able to close the gap. There's not even a little bit like I didn't even get inside. I think you were leading by twenty five points after the first week and I've never ever closed the gap your Right now you are the Coyote Landon doing. Have you checked have not checked lately? scored the other date. So I'm yes all that. So they've They've clinched fourth and they're in the D. L. And so they get a bye in the first round they were pretty cool playoff system in the in the D. L. so they have sixteen teams can make the playoffs teams. Seven eight nine and ten play too. What a three seven plays ten eight plays nine. Two out of three play in series and that moves them into the quarter-finals and so one plays the lowest seed of the play in series two plays the second lowest seed and three and four play. And it's I think it's a it's a pretty cool system. I believe and Bettmann Company. Don't even WanNa soon as you bring up the playoffs and the idea of changing or a plan formula or something like that the National Hockey League level instantly. They just yeah. You're it's conversation over and the reason I think they're so quick to dismiss all his obvious right. It's financial you need those full seven game series. Now they will say it's because of the entertainment value of the sport. Okay but what about if they what about if you know the sixteen get in and seven eight nine ten? Play two out of three financial. They'll be more playoff games. I guess there would be. I think we're going to use that. As a clip rate. Ferraro has a new play off for me. I do I do. I've just I'm fully endorsing it without ever really seeing it in practice. I'm going to watch it in the German league this year. And then I'll check back with you so just just as I begin the descent because we're going to land this plane pretty soon here. S Land a him standing outside the hotel waiting for the Uber. Yesterday to take me to Fort Lauderdale airport. Commissioner Batman comes out he's valeted is vehicle because he's got a summer home in in the area right so I'm curious. I'm wondering what kind of vehicle commissioned GIRBAN would roll around him right and I'm guessing an electric vehicle. Why is that? He's a hybrid. Kind of guy like just pure electric your leg. Tesla yes no so it. You know so automatically. I just had it in my head that he'd be in this like seven series. Bmw or a bigger Mercedes is something with some luxury you know. Law is riding luxury but a nine eleven porsche. Rolls up and it is rumbling. Like this thing has got a jet motor and I started giggling. Looks at me head but he gets into it and not paying close attention but and he's obviously doing it somewhat for show hits a button and of course the roof retracts. It's a convertible nine eleven. I would not have guessed that vehicle of choice. Maybe that's too much information. You might be sorrow with me but I took pictures as well. I just I wouldn't. I wouldn't post them. Also them to you ray. When we're traveling I'll show them commissioner Bettman in the nine eleven convertible. It's not a bad look pretty. Yeah I would have never guessed it once. You'RE GONNA say one thing I'm going to say I just saw this right now. Congrats to a really good guy Tim Peel the official. He's coming back today. Was supposed to be for the year eat fractured his leg. Just to gross injury but Timmy Peel back and good for you. Tim Yeah I watched them. Did you see the video of him working out like a week or so ago? I couldn't believe he was that far along. Good for him. That's awesome. What's your week? Look like we'll wrap it up as soon as I hang up here. I'm headed to the airport going to Los Angeles looking forward to going to the kings game tonight going to hook up with the LUC Robitaille for dinner and I assume he's paying and Mike L. Teary one of the guys finest gentleman in the game. We met Mike or I met Mike when I went to La. We were young guys back then and he was the PR director and Kevin Stevens used to phone him. From the back of the bus Mike would be up at the front. We'd be stuck in traffic. Had already we'd be back there with Eddie Olczyk and myself and already and already would call up and go like what's going on up there and he'd go weren't traffic just like you already a loved it so I'm going to dinner with them and got the Lifson the leafs in Anaheim tomorrow night and then Back Oman Saturday morning. "And the and the referee I use this example before the D. crosscheck three times and they yelled. That's enough. Now wait a minute. It was enough the first time. Like as you're talking about pronger that reminds me of the late. Great Brad mccrum was was there. Anyone more mean in front of then then these Lucas. So here's the thing with him to. He never said anything on the ice like nothing not a word and his helmet. You remember that win. Well Helmet you. It was like he put it on with a hammer. It was on really low just above his eyebrows. He never said a word and he had like really dark. I like he intimidated. Just by standing there and you'd get in front of the net and he'd like net like guys are like you know they your ads. The plays going on now. You're barking at each other. He never said a word. I found that super intimidating think it was Craig Simpson. Who said that Brad? Mccrum probably shaved a good seven years office playing career just based on the amount abuse that summer took in front of the net to the lower back. Big Old sure would wooden sticks man. God never broke either now. So you're good with a skate in the air. You think this is yeah. This is just yeah. I think it's good because they you know X. number of years ago I don't know how many Matt Shane was thirty feet off side and he changed the rule and since that day they've been chasing a better way to do it if you're gonNA use the camera to pick whether a Guy Skate. Blade is on or off the ice and a lot of times. It's man it's like its hair thin. I think there's got to be a little bit of leeway here in and I 'cause I view a lot of time even when they go through the video review. I'm no more certain than I was watching it live. Yeah so there's some that are obvious some that aren't I think it's a good rule the way I think it's a good rule. They've made a good change the rule every week in the podcast. We ask you to send your questions. Submit them to ask Ray and greg social media as well or you can contact us via email labral in drugs or go to at Ryan Giggs Dot Com and submit your questions there. I'm going to go back to the turmoil the debacle that is unfolding this weekend Ottawa. So Ray this question comes from J B in Ottawa. And he says in light of the gym little situation in little getting booted by Eugene Melnyk if using foul language got you fired from your job in virtually every coat flare. Gm get fired every year. And he says all of us can lip read and see exactly what. Players coaches are yelling in the bench and the GM and owners muttering their luxury boxes. That just seems like an awfully poor made up excuse by sends ownership to fire someone. They just hired. Ottawa cannot get out of their own way. These days I mean clearly. It goes deeper than as you described earlier. You Know Jim little an Eugene melnyk Having a heated argument and Jim Little Carson at Eugene Melnyk over something. There had been a lot more to this than that why. I hope so like A. I would suspect if you're working for me and we get into a conversation like that once we've hung up the phone as the leader is the owner. I would call you back and say a drake's don't ever speak to me like that again like it. We're going to have debates great but we gotta go. We gotta go with this a different way. You just hired the guy you must have looked at his record and said man. I like what he does. I like what he's done in his previous jobs. I mean that's what job searches and so when you work more intimately with them. If there is a disagreement like clearly there was if it was just that one disagreement you would think you would just pick up the phone and say okay. Look that can't happen again. Let's do this. We'll figure this out a different way right. Yeah but I I would. I would hope there was more issues than that because man. That's who you're going to hire now while I mean I guess still always be somebody that goes you know what I can make this work but the track record is not is not great. No Jim little body was that guy. He wanted to be the face. Business Face of the Ottawa Senators Let's go to Pierre and I don't think it's Lebron but it's peer who says as a lifelong Montreal fan so if you're would've said it as a lifelong Jerusalan it could have been the. Oh by the way. Do you know that Jerusalem hearst Ontario? You might not know that. Peer Lebron's from Hurston -Tario as well as small coincidence as my mom would say that was a coup winky dink winding so this is from peer as a lifelong Montreal Fan. I was disappointed. When mark bears have announced he was keeping Clo- Julian all my friends agreed. He is not the right guy to get the best out of the current crop of players and return the HAB to an elite level team. Like they should be. We need a modern relatable coach to achieve that. Why do you guys? Why do we think that Mark Berge Vat and the Montreal? Canadians decided to keep him instead of moving them out. All it could be lots of reasons. five million dollars on his contract next year might be one of the year after. Yeah right so now. You're looking at a ten million dollar commitment. They feel and the only reason I know this is because you know Bergereon has said this a couple of times publicly most recently just last week that they feel that they were trending to be a playoff team this year and then injuries rip them apart. I don't know that I believe that. But Damn they were close last year and but I just don't. I don't believe that they're the team that they think they are. Clothed has been a a successful coach. But I I understand is As a coach gets older. If the if the results aren't there fans are going to clamor for somebody. Younger newer different. If you'RE GONNA fire a guy you better have a replacement ready I can. I can see where the frustration is a Montreal. They have not been. They've not been an impactful team for a number of years and that doesn't sit well in Montreal. It doesn't and I'm okay with Berge taking a position that he did and announcing that he's not replacing Julian only because inevitably we're going to be revisiting this at the end of the Montreal Canadian season and Berge knows he's got a ton of work to do. The onus is on the general manager to bring in some better players so that could be part of it as well you know. I did like the fact. He came out and said he's he's not GonNa make a coaching change because if he didn't for the next six weeks that's all. Yeah that would be running around the airwaves. All right final question for your Ray and ask Ray dregs from Michael. My son has gotten into collecting hockey cards. I found an old box of mind with a few of Ray Ferraro's cards in it. Got Me wondering if players ever complained about the picks chosen for their cards so and then the follow up. Question is with ray working on e. As NHL game Well that's the video game which you do. How many times a week I was there yesterday. So I'm twenty hours a month. Okay do players ever complained to you about their abilities? Slash or ratings in the game I about the pictures. Yeah there is. There's a couple there I'm like. That's the best shot they could get like you any day. Greasy porn stash for that stash was outstanding outstanding in the day. And don't think I'd bring it back but it sits there. There were a couple of cards. I I don't like but it the time you didn't even know who to complain too. Yeah right just complain to your buddies in the latest card can look like I can't ski or something like So yeah you some that you didn't like As for the game rating no player has complained but I see on social media. "It was like wildfire on social media. Wasn't I mean everybody was talking about it? Tsn We did. We did panel chats on it. So is there a strong and of appetite for that sort of debate at this stage might throat punches to the media for kind of losing the game here a little bit and what I mean by that is it turned into media in each perspective city defending only their guy like it matters to them? If David posture knock or Leon Dry Seidel or are Tammy Pinera and win the MVP. Like why would you care? Like I understand your beat writer there every day you form some middle peripheral relationship with these guys right the some guy shall I warn? Hope they do well. Of course we all do that. Yeah but what's happened? It's almo- it's in probably all walks of life now. I mean it's certainly in politics. But even in this if you think one player is deserving of the Hart trophy that must mean you think everybody else stinks and so if I if I think on dry cycles the MVP you may disagree with me. But it doesn't make me an idiot. It means that in my view when I read the Hart Trophy so I went up and look that up because I'm like everybody seems to have their own criteria for what it is. Yeah Hart Trophy. Originally the Hart Memorial Trophy originally known as the Hart Trophy is awarded annually to the player judged most valuable to his team. That's it that's it so it doesn't say that they have to be in the playoffs. Although I find I wait that more heavily. I think you do have to be in the playoffs to win the Hart Trophy yet. When I'm reading the The description it doesn't say anything about that right and so everybody. Kinda grazed the lines a little bit to what they feel. I. It's not only about points but right now I think Leon Dry titles having the most outstanding season in the National Hockey League he would get it would get my vote today so but you submit about fought right and this was what the this was part of the debate and we included Elliott Friedman. Boca's part of this conversation as well so if if Leandre Seidel is is your heart. Trophy winner can connor mcdavid beyond that list of five. Yes but you've already conceded that Leon is going to win yes. So are you wasting a vote by submitting a player who you don't think is better than his team mate so he can't be if Leon is the most valuable owners. Okay go on. Sorry that you've Leon. Is the most valuable player for the Edmonton oilers. Connor mcdavid can't be right. He's the second most valuable player on the oilers. So why would you put them on your ballot? Because he's more valuable to his team than I think some other players are two. There's fair enough and is on my modality improperly. Look it's march. Whatever Today v I think is it the fifth. I don't know I think so. Yeah IT IS MARCH Fifth Interesting. Anyway on watch the V. I'd have dry Seidel. I'd have pasternack. I'd have McKinnon. I'd have pain Aaron and I'd have mcdavid in no particular order except dry seidel would be I a order except Leon is number one. Well that's the yeah. Because then they tabulate the votes and vote you know and and the the majority would speak but for me. It's impossible to say dry. Sil- is not the most valuable player to the Edmonton oilers this year. Yeah I'm struggling. I like your list And again because saw early and we have so much time left to make the decision. I my gut tells me that Nate McKinnon should be number one really. He doesn't have a point in seven games. Okay all right well. I Love Nate mccay in and I love watching him play. He scored the well. Actually he does have a point because he score. I think he's scored last night. Yeah he did he I love. There's there's very few things that make me kind of really jump up anymore. In Watch when nate McCain and gets the puck on the power play and he's got open ice in front of him. It looks like he's running downhill like a little kid. That can't control. How fast these going? It's like he's faster than everybody else. I'm and he's got the POC I just love it. I love watching them do that. That it's what mcdavid does it to you. When they the drop pass on the power play the other day Edmonton carried the puck up to the Blue Line and then threw it back. Thirty feet mcdavid. He looked like he'd been turbocharged into the game. Was like there's no way they're stopping and getting in the zone so your throat punches to the the media no it's to the media in general. I kind of lost track there. You brought me off track. What might throw punches? Just don't you don't have a tattoo of the players name on your ass like just like be objective as you're supporting the players that to the Boston media and the Edmonton media who this really turned into a a punch in those contests on the other guy you're disparaging. He's a damn good player to like posture. Knock or dry seidel. The great players doesn't mean you're an idiot if you vote for one or the other one guy's going to fifty five goals that's my road. Bonds Sri is a simple one. This week I feel it's simple and it actually just. It just emerged on Wednesday. While we're covering the general manager's meetings everyone's phone goes off and you look down. Ono. The Ottawa Senators have fired. Another executive chip Jim level has been fired as CEO of the Ottawa. Senators less than two months after being hired. And we're all looking at each other going. Is this for real? What's happening here so As respectful as I need to be to ownership in the national hockey league Eugene Melnyk gets a throat punch because another top executive is cast aside now some some others left on their own Thomas only us now with affectively the Edmonton oilers one of the most respected sport executives in the world literally. He left over a year ago because he couldn't handle things in Ottawa. They dispatched Cyril leader before that and he had spent twenty five years with the Ottawa senators. So I don't know what it is about the Front Office of the Ottawa Senators. And I'm not talking about peer Dorien and hockey operations. I'm talking about the executives above peer dorien including Eugene. Melnyk the senators. I don't understand why they can't get that right and why seemingly so many good people cannot work with Eugene Melnyk for longer than a few months. So Eugene Melnyk gets my throat punch while it's It's a shame because the guy owns a team you know. He's he can do whatever he wants. But until there's any stability off the ice how could they expect the fans to come back and be interested in a rebuilding team? Like how could you expect that and so this apparently comes from conversation that they had around Valentine's Day were they? Were you know? They got into a heated discussion. There is some f bombs dropped back and forth and and that was kind of the the beginning of the end but man like it's hard to believe that they will ever be on solid footing unless they can present a more united front it just. It just seems impossible. We've got a question surrounding that whole scenario of Eugene melnyk and Jim Little The Ottawa Senators as part of ask grand drag. So we'll have that coming up. We teased this earlier as well between the benches and the fact that there was some on ice news to come out of the general manager's meetings and the fact that after years of discussing what they could do to tweak the offside rule ray they finally endorsed that. It's okay to have your skate in the air as long as that skate in the air covering some part of that Blue Line. Then it's okay. Eighteen challenges to date as we record on Thursday fourteen goals taken back because of the skate. I know Steve is a man of the Detroit redwings was a strong proponent of this tweak so maybe that was the boost that gamble of hockey operations of the National Hockey League needed to finally drive this thing through but it's been passed now it just has to be fully push through by the competition committee and then ultimately approved by the Board of Governors. Out Happened Drake's well. It's not that quick to be ferried it'll be. It'll happen in time for next season but I I don't think we can get it so we can get the new technology puck in by in in five weeks and we can't approve this. I know but that's on the managers to be fair and and I would say this. There were some managers. We didn't love the idea of of the player tracking the new puck and all that being introduced for the playoffs. Only because why wouldn't you wait until the start of next season game? One of eighty two. Everybody gets gone. Everybody deals with with the technology and the new pocket at the same time but when it comes to rule changes like they talked about. You know maybe reinforcing across check in a couple of fronts. A is a have. The officials gotten too lenient on not calling cross-checking penalties because players are getting injured. And then be you know. There is a defensive mechanism to that as as Defenseman of Kinda perfected. The the box owed if you will by using that crosscheck maneuver that push the battles INFO. You talked to too many defensemen the bars. Oh no no box out go ahead. Don't cross check the Guy. It's in the rule book read it. It's like the Hart Trophy thing. Read the damn rule so but in the spirit of having that conversation there was willingness among all general managers to talk about it there. Were guys frothing coming out of that meeting going. We're not changing the rule. You can't do it in season right. It's too difficult to introduce that season. So they they tabled that. But it's a point well made because the player tracking is going to happen for the playoffs but unfortunately the tweak allowing the skate in the air. We're GONNA have to wait until the start of Meksi's while I I get them. I get the distinction of what you're saying here like between the difference of you know nothing. Changes with the players wearing a tracker sewn into their shoulder pads like there. That's not going to change anything. That the offside rule of course will change. How you cross into the offensive zone. So I I get that by the way the box out thing one of our previous guests on this show Chris pronger. He perfected the box out at six foot. Six when he cross-checked you in front of the net like he cross-checked you.

"That's because I'm trying to change the outlook that I have things where have tended to be very glass half? You haven't tried to kind of change that approach. Yes you know. Today it would have been one of the days that you have complained about in principle because you got the flight that landed Pittsburgh and you have one of the worst dries rocky. Where you guys got airport to the city and you hit that the traffic and all that and You know today whereas I probably would have generally in the past and making jokes about the ride or whatever it might that are all just slightly. Skewed negatives I put my headphones in. I listen to something I kind of took me out of that and to that extent I agree with you that Everything feels everything. Feels great right now and I. I took these days for granted because they felt like such a burden and they they never. Should they absolutely your Nanny Gel and you're traveling to another city to play another hockey game. I'm assuming you still smiled when he got to the tunnel in Pittsburgh like I'm almost there yup. Yeah that's when you know exactly right now bobby. So you're you're back with this team that. Oh my gosh through the youngest team around you must feel like thirty two. You must feel like you're the oldest Guy Miley. How do you view yourself as an older guy now or you just want to be a mentor? Do you want to be a leader? Do you want to just be a player? Like what goes through as you step back into this. I think ideally you you kind of you wear every cap in spurts for me right now. I WANNA finish the season as a player and and finish strong right. I WANNA I WANNA private that. I still have years left me because I don't know what my future holds. Two years left on the contract but You know you guys know as well as anybody. That's always that's always able to be taken away from me so I wanNA prove I can do that but at the same time. We've got a lot of kids at that are learning everyday life in the NHL right the the ups and downs and I guess the engine analysis of of dealing with coaching staff. And and you know it's very easy the young guy to get in your own out about things and So I guess there's a there's a sense that I'll be a sounding board for some of them and and you know guys have common. I hope they continue to come to any of these questions about things because you just WanNa you WANNA set their mind right so that they can play and And play to the best of their abilities and the future is pretty bright with a few of them. There's some really really good players that that you don't WanNa see get bogged down by the losing right of of of a process that that is a rebuild to you. You just want to keep them fresh. You WanNa keep it exciting for them and you want to expose them to to new things every now one of those young guys of course. Josh Norris and he's going to be part of the Ottawa. Senators future no question about that. How confident is this young? Because I mean this literally happened at a not last Thursday You've got the empty netter. And he is screaming for the PUCK. Is that accurate yes? He gave a yellow. I heard it Very very briefly and then I I check my shoulder to because I couldn't believe it I had to watch the video to really get you know. He expected me to threat of pass through the fence. That Yeah Eve. Excuse equate the kid. He's going to be a heck of a player. I am Bobby. Right in saying yeah. Yeah that's a first for me. I can say now I have at all but yes. You're he is one heck of a kit in euro. Are you really good hockey player? You're hundred seventy two games from one thousand. Is that His Eddie your brain at all. you know one of the one of the things. I thought about over the time out of the game was that number because yet you sign a seven year deal. Wh Twenty Six. I believe I was give or take. And you think that You know a thousand gain is is a no brainer Given where I was in a time of the contract and all that and you get some injuries and then I mean this is obviously a different circumstance. You look at all. The Man Games lost that I've had unfortunately broken hands and and this that It seems like it's a very you know uphill battle to get there right now but I would I would certainly like to. I'm certainly going to give everything I have to it. I still think I got the Machi lusted meat and That is the plan to keep keep climbing towards. The you mentioned your your hand injuries. I gotTa Tell Ya man. We're doing the broadcast. I've never seen a guy get hit in the hand. Do Wear Mittens. What do you think it's incredible isn't it? You can't you can only do so much. The gloves you guys now and we did a lot of them But you just I mean you can't plan for that I mean they're just majorly majorly freak accidents for you. Go out to block the shot and actually turned out of the way of shots to not get my hands at where everybody right up shop and break the inside fingered. I'm just so you can. I mean you can't write this so I I've been lucky. Knock on wood that I haven't had to deal with them once this year I had a Lotta time off. Obviously but it looks like I might get through one season unscathed on the injury. I gotTa tell you to be honest here. There there is a game. It was It was last year and a shot. Came the -flective hitching the hand. And you want to get looked at the producer says in my ear. Bobby's gone down the tunnel. He got hit the hand. I'm like Oh come on stop it and I was giving it to the producer among hit again. I'm like you're kidding me. And he's Nolan. Then I had A. I had a nice role he said. I don't care if we give up fifty shot tonight because your defense and gets forty eight. Just get out of the way. He's just I want that in writing and I want you not around the league to everybody. That's doing our game some color. Tv radio whatever it might be. Because I'm I need to be able to say that. I got permission to do that. But it was getting to. That point where it was it was almost laughable. Speaking of laughing take us back now obviously. It is a tenth anniversary of the Golden Goal. I did they bring that up with auto. I'm sure that they have right. Of course. Yeah of course they guys. I'm newly over and we're talking solutions but is this true and I think there's a video out there The Anaheim ducks possess the video. Where gets laugh? Perry is a neater buyer. Did they literally nickname you silver? Did that accident happen or or Chirp us at an actual Chirp of them calling you that came from Judea They had never named me. That but Somebody some some genius writer. Did it and I palled silver. It was once a week. It's it's amazing I I'll hear it on the ice around here walking around talent and somebody gets once a week and have just been able to escape it but The videos did turn out. Well I will. I will say that that We did a good job with those. And and I. I do wish I had you know. Read the fine print at that. Nickname was gonna stick with me forever. These former Olympians. Who are who are saying this to you on the ice or is it just some average player. Who got on the players have? Yeah no the players never hear it all the time around town like In Ottawa here from opposing fans. I get it yeah but never from the players thankfully because if I did I mean that's that's a fight on site. I think if he just lets you gotTa have a conversation right away or you can say yeah. At least I was in the Games. You were not well. You don't let I probably only played about three minutes. Then the guy that whoever allies I I remember ticket penalty the went okay. I think I'm GonNa Grocery secure for the rest of the way but that was the longest two minutes of my life. You still have the RV or did you get rid of that. And by the way Ray brought this up because we do a lot of preparation for the Rangers podcast and he asked me via taxi. Said does bobby still of the RV. And I said I don't think so didn't have didn't you name it like Gretchen. Or something like that What was her name Darlene Darlene? Sweet we waited and sold it to us in Idaho and we drove it for a bit. It got harder with kids so we sold it and Keep the family. I sold it to my dad's now takes up room in his driveway in South Jersey Do have to it and and I gave him absolutely zero of a deal. I signed up for every penny that was worth. But it's been some time since I've been in good old Darlie cat forget Darlene bobby. We really appreciate you taking the time to join us. Your great role model. Both on and off the ice and can't thank you enough for being so candid today my pleasure. Thank you for having me appreciate a you know we're fourteen array to be surrounded and what we do on a day-to-day basis and covering the National Hockey League. By so many good people you'll be in ownership management coaching Clearly the the number of players that we cross paths with you certainly on a day by day basis hard to beat the character of Bobby Ryan the adversity that he's faced you know he. He talks openly in the podcast. And the interview about going on a three day road trip. And then recognizing that now there. There was work that had to get done any. Couldn't put it off any longer. He's not that far removed from being away from that treatment process yet. He speaks so openly and so candidly about his experience and his future. I can't imagine even though he was describing it to us that head space of as he's on the ice in Detroit saying if I don't get off the ice now and leave I'm just GonNa Chalk this up to another bad day and grind my way through it and it'll you know and I'll just go on like he whatever rock bottom must have been for him. It had the come to a head in Detroit that day and I find like he said you know he's. He's an extreme introvert and yet he speaks so easily or openly. I just I have always found him to be a super engaging guy and easy guy to talk to in a you only hope for the best here forum for all of these people that go through some addiction recovery. They often talk about the difference between recovery and recovering and recovering is what they're doing. You Know Brian McGrath and has been a A really positive Example of someone that's been a decade has been sober for a decade in. He just passed a anniversary of it and manually. I saw them in Calgary When I was doing a game there he forgot. I hadn't seen him in a while for like how giant man he is and you know this ten years ago kind of brought him to his knees. And he's like I get I gotta get right and I have great admiration for for Bobby Ryan for for what? He's done what he's doing by being public with this and trying to give somebody else a glimmer of hope as to what can be very generous with his time joining us on the brain dregs hockey podcast. We tease this off. The top of the PODCAST and we're shifting over now to throat punch and we talked about how media over the last handful of days anyway as Talked about the major trophy winners in the voting process and really boiled into one right. And that's the quest for the Hart Trophy and I guess the primary reason Ray for having that conversation is because you've got connor mcdavid and Leon Seidel on the same team can two players on the same team be nominated in the top five for the heart and man..

"Well an emotional return to the Canadian tire center last week as Ottawa. Senators veteran forward. Bobby Ryan provided us with certainly one of the great stories of this. Nhl Year and scoring a hat-trick in his first game back on home ice after being away for more than three months and treatment for alcohol. Abuse the Bobby Ryan now joins US ON THE RAINDROPS HOCKEY. Podcast and bobby take us back to. Last Thursday's game now. The crowd is chatting your name. There was so much so much love in that building. And you're clearly caught up in the moment as many of us were. Why was it such an emotional experience for you? I think it was just a long a long three months that That kind of culminated in just the perfect evening to come back and to do not only to win but to do that My wife was in the building. Who's been through a lot with me here and The reception just was was above and beyond and I wasn't sure what I was. GonNa get overwhelmed by scoring first and then the reception. Just Kinda got louder all night and It was tough. It was kind of tough to hide it. You know being front and center like that so it caught up with me in the third period. But I tried to do my best to kind of the game bobby. What was the what was the toughest part of of being away? The toughest part of the hundred days as you talked about the first thirty days. The you know the first thirty days a year. You're you're on that I've facility so it's across the country from a guy is my wife. Kids obviously All of that that ties in. And you know you're going through you know not always realizations about yourself. But you're learning a little more anger you you feel very isolated You feel like you're you know you're battling it on your own and you are but you you know I feel like I had support through through that but it just being away from everything. That's their kids day. In and day out was probably the hardest part And then you know to to Kinda weather that storm Being so distant from from from everybody I guess would have been the hardest part but You know getting through the first thirty days was instrumental. 'cause I got back to a rhythm pretty quickly once I got back to. Ottawa was didn't make it any more or was it insignificant than it was public knowledge. Where you're tough question. I think it for me. You get there and you you have that period where you have no contact with anybody so for the first seventy two hours while all the news was coming out. I was very Very unaware of what was happening. And I appreciate it that for the most part but one year when it does hit hits like a ton of bricks and And you have people that you know reach out. And and there's there's a ton of support that's first and foremost but outside of that a Lotta People Wanna go deeper with that and then have conversations that you're just not ready to have and that felt like it was a little overwhelming but the whole the whole public side of it. I knew I knew what I was getting into. Getting off the is in Detroit and making that decision so I break for it. Expected IT and You know looking back I mean. It's been a very short window but it's been a blessing and in a very thinly veiled disguise right like did you. Did you have anybody that you can find it in or was it just kind of you and your wife and then you you had to make this step by yourself to make it by myself. I and I did And I can fight it in her. And you know I think those people that know me know that You know a wood mall now diagnosed as an extreme introvert but my circle very small and and There wasn't a lot of people that I felt like I needed to to really involved in the process of the day to day things. I just wanted my wife to know that That I was doing it right and and you know she helped me realize that this time to do so it felt like it was just taking the journey in and you know some outside friends that reached out from time to time but it was really me getting better for for myself first and foremost but but certainly from my family when you're away for the first thirty days as you mentioned are you. Are you in contact daily with your wife for or you? Kinda really by yourself. No you get. I mean I in contact daily Even I you know in the twenty first century radio. It's everybody understands that with cell phones and whatnot. You have to be writing that that. There's a seventy two hour freeze which I don't even think I made it for seventy two hours before I said I'm calling my wife right It's it's not a conversation. It's it's what's happening so the people were very very good about that kind of stuff and allowed me to do that and You know I went there from a road trip so I I had a three day bag. Doc This wasn't in the car or the plans at the time. And you know within twenty four hours they pick academy enough to go out and Kinda by all the things I needed to get through the month but It's it's it's a very. It's a very odd process bobby. I'm I'm really admire your your openness and as I'm listening to this I'm thinking like so somewhere you made this decision you said you went on a three day road trip. You made your decision somewhere on this trip that I gotta get help. Get the hell out of here. Like was there one moment or Wizar- a couple of moments that made you know I gotTa do this now but into the season and and really things kind of escalated for me over the past. It's been years but it's been it's been worse in the past little while and I you know I had times where I said to my wife. Okay that's where I'm doing this and I did it and I would do it for twelve days or I would do it for three weeks or whatever it might be but you when when you don't have anything. I want to say a program. 'cause that's not the word but when you don't have anything substantive to Kinda help you alleviate the things that lead to the problems the drinking problems. I had no foundation of how to do it except for white knuckling Almost be militaristic in their approach. Where all the other areas of my life took took a hit because I was so intent on this but leading up getting off the ice in Detroit. I just you know that morning. I had a panic attack and You know coffin in just a horrible horrible shape couldn't couldn't get get myself to to go on the ice one more time and I think anybody that knows that plays whether it's an injury or whether it's this Y- find a way to kind of grind Through it you you you warm up you know you take a couple of deep breaths and remind yourself that this is your job and your profession. You gotta find a way to do it but I was halfway through the third day. Not even maybe in and just said this is I go now I'm GonNa get through this practice and I'm Gonna I'm GonNa Chalk it up to another bad experience and I can't. I can't have that I couldn't have a professionally but most importantly I couldn't have you know personally. Wow you know. There's for obvious reasons bobby. We we can't talk a whole bunch about the actual Substance Abuse Program Right the Shared Program Gel and the players association and again. It's it's strictly confidential. You're sharing your experience but I I bring it up in that way because I think it's important to acknowledge how how important the program is and how well it works and perhaps your our most recent example I mean. Can you imagine where you might be if if not for the help that you have received to this point and I'm assuming that you'll you'll continue to receive moving forward and they were? I mean I can't I can't say enough about it at a time I hated it I kinda hated the first thirty days of the rigidity The you know the rules and The therapy and and the things that you really have to tackle in the first thirty days to have any kind of success in my mind You know Dr John. Lewis who everybody is well aware of or credible You know I was extremely upset. What after thirty days I wasn't able to rejoin the team. I didn't know that so they kind of make you go through those little tiny steps that you fight against the entire way. And you're and you're asking. Why can't I do this like him? I do that but they have that plan and plans been proven to work that you have to handle your affairs in your sobriety in very shorts first and then as you handle that you get you get a cookie and like cookie. Waste every two weeks and get a little bit closer to rejoining the team or I read join me. You know just being allowed at the rink or whatever might be so you know. I. I was standing at the practice during during the Bell Capital Cup. Which is the biggest whatever squirt hockey tournament in the world and and I felt like I was like why am I not getting the rink? And do this in private. And I'm I'm out here in front of people but Each little step was just kind of you know a step in the right direction for me to prove to them that it was that I was able to take on more and Looking back now. I'm very very glad I did it on on their on their step process and their you know their program. Sure when you know when you're you know before you went into the program you had your hockey routine. Whatever that might have been you go to practice you get coffee here you go do this practice you go home you got a game day. Routine does all of that change mommy. It has for me I changed everything you know off the ice as well. My routine looks a lot different but you know surrounding hockey. The there's so many similarities from the time of the buses took whatever. It might be the game day skate all that kind of stuff that you can't change a ton but you can change the little things you do and you know. I had to learn how to I had to learn to take five to ten minutes for myself in the morning. Kinda just get my head in the right place because if I start my day off in the wrong they're wrong mindset throwing money you know frame Done it kind of. I've had tough days from there so I haven't taken the time to do it so I spend my drive to the rink. We really focus on things like that But you know once you get back into the rhythm a of a Game Day. It's tough yet. You're still going to warm up the same and you're still going to go back to all the same things that you do as a player you know you. You said something in your first game back. You interviewed with Chris Gothard interviewed you. And you said maybe you took the game for granted now. I don't have this experience to share with you but what I do know is when I left the game and somebody asked me. Would you like to play again? The only days I wanted back. We're the ones that. I was pissing and moaning all the time I hated the travel I hated track this Like do you feel you got to like. Hey this is a new leaf. A new lease on on my hockey life like does it feel different. Yes it does. Yeah everything does part of..

"And we're chatting about things and he's asking about the podcast and he said Oh. What type of guests do you partner noted? Well we've had some good ones. I promoted the fight. We were in Bobby Ryan on episode twenty one but I said some of the best ones for me and we've had business Asti. We've had Wayne Gretzky. I spent a raise former teammates. And I told the story of the Dean Evanston podcast only because Dean was so forthcoming in the fact that you guys can recount those those stories from your playing days. I mean it it for sure will be top five. And we've got some good guests common down the road here but that won't be top five. No Yeah. They're they're Dole Brandon connection there to deans from random. Kelly of course was Would be quite familiar with them from his days and Brandon as well. I used to blame that. So whether it's run by the way it's episode seven is episode seven with With denouncing check it out. I'm telling you this comes with the with the guarantee that you will laugh your ass off. I spent the better part of our rob. Blake is on a scouting mission so he left Boca to come to Toronto. He's GonNa go watch Quinton by field play and you know. Some of the Ontario League draft L. One hundred draft picks. Now I know there's GonNa be a vote for. Gm story grades. That are GonNa should just take their chair and sit off to the edge of the stage because they're going to be running up there. The whole first round rob blake could be terrific guests for while just his number one. He's a good guy but some of the stories that he could tell would be would be tremendous as well but we're talking about different teams and yeah we talked about Minnesota and we talked about Colorado as well and and I said to him you know. I was curious as to what Joe Sakic would do leading up to the trade deadline right and we know that they landed some pieces domestic off being among them from the Ottawa senators. But I said you know what do you have any concerns with their goaltending and he just elected know their goaltending is fine. No problems with the goal tending. I wasn't sure about that until very recently. But obviously Joe Sakic's got a better. I for his goaltending than I do. So what are your thoughts on particularity? Pavel? Franco's now well east playing well. They've so we had seen we'd seen Francis last Couple of championships but it was able to rea- them go where you're like man. This guy's pretty good. And he was but he was in Europe and middle cultivating a good career there. Yeah and when they signed him in Colorado they signed him as their number three guy and he played with their American league. Team had a really good year. Last year came up a little bit but but it was with not with the understanding. But I think you could see the bigger picture that he was going to be the backup this year. They had made the trade with Washington. Broadened Philip Group our and grew our was going to be the the number one because semyon Varlamov contract was coming to an end. So now they've got group our and Francis who they have I think had This was kind of their plan any way or their hope and now I look at them and and grew hours out rate now. So Gruber's got a two sixty three goals against average at seventeenth in the league. He's got a point nine one six save percentage that's nineteenth pretty good stuff except Prov Pablo Francis who's taken over since grew hours been injured. He's fourth in both categories. Nine twenty seven. Save percentage two point three zero goals against average eight one two in his last eleven games. So look at those numbers. Like who else you're GONNA get. Why do you need anybody else? They're gonNA use both guys for right now. They've done the job for them. Will they do it in the playoffs? I duNno remember a couple years ago. When Washington won The Stanley Cup Group? Our was in goal before they went to Britain hole in game. Three of the first round. And they're doing this. They're goaltending so in the eleven games Francis played. He's given up three goals against three times. Everything else is below three. That's a much better way to win. And in particular because Miss Nazem Qadri and Matt Calvert and that Stud Miekel Renton mandate. They've decimated their top two lines and they still win. They still get points. They're still on Saint Louis his ass two points behind. Saint Louis with a game in hand like a good team. Oh by the way. They're doing it with Okayo Car. But it doesn't they plug in another guy and in off they go by the way. I WANNA give one guy props here because I think it means absolutely nothing but I. I'm fascinated by this in Saint Louis. The Blues are eight Knoll with Marco Scandal in the lineup. Now I don't know why that matters but there are no and if I were Marco scandal. After every win I'd come into the room and go win win win boys. That's all we do. What a lottery. First Gambella right you start the year in Buffalo. You get traded to Montreal home by the way he's hall that's Yeah and then yet delta again but to a place where you've got an excellent chance of winning a Stanley Cup. So it's been quite a year for Marcos. Gondola member the Jeffersons theme song moving on up moving bill. Yeah you do things are going to. Is it to the west side or Eastside to a deluxe apartment in the scene. Yeah it's coming back to me now. Oh yeah that was Sitcom Heyday right. There really was The beauty of the general manager's meetings are again Boca Raton. Well that's part of it for sure but you know there's no trade deadline to worry about. These guys are relaxed right. I mean the guys that were in the playoffs or more relax guys that are on the playoffs line or less relaxed which I also find amusing because we we normally congregate in the lobby bar. And it's it's amusing to me. You've got the hockey games on. You can just see like Arnold Callanan doesn't show a whole lot of emotion. But he's he's a fiery dude right. He's watching Blue Jackets Game Day. And he's almost like wobbling back in his chair because and then David poile against the the edmonson owners. The owners had the big third period the other night I mean I felt bad for Paul at one point. He's like slumped in his chair. They could defeated human being. While the worst part I would think too for these guys. Drags the general managers. It's once it's passed the deadline. There is nothing for them to do. They can't do anymore to improve their team now but you know what he couldn't wipe the smile off. Chuck Fletcher's face just given the way. His team is playing in Philadelphia. And as we record this here Thursday the flyers winning Wednesday night against the Washington capitals again. So that's a seven straight wins the philadelphia flyers. They finished the regular season. Three one against the capitals in. It's not one or two guys in Philadelphia that are doing things the right way and contributing right you know. You've got Kevin Hayes who is a wonderful fit with the flyers vortex a juror who is good Chuck Yell Made Mention of Sean. Couturier doesn't think he gets enough credit for what he does the Philadelphia Flyers Young Travis connect the NFL. He's developing on and on it goes. I am looking forward to Pittsburgh Philadelphia Round one series. All that would be good. Wouldn't it that would be so good? Everything just gets just ramped up so much when those guys play a I guess it would be it literally would be like Calgary and Edmonton would. It would be phenomenal It's funny you know you go through the the guys that you went through and you know you you said Kevin Hayes a great fit and Philly. Isn't it weird? How and I always wondered this when I was playing to. Why is one place a fit and another is not 'cause he was just not a fit in Winnipeg didn't work. They traded a first round pick form. They were hoping he would replicate. What Paul Stassen? He did the year before and he fell flat. It didn't work ended up on the fourth line comes to Philly signs this huge deal and manny's had a fantastic year. They look to him to leadership. And that's certainly not been the case before some history there with Elaine. Venal knows him from the Rangers Jerus- started out couldn't score power play. He ineffective which is really been his bread and butter over his career. Then all of a sudden he started to collect they put drew back on the left wing with. Qatari and bore check and the three veterans have been awesome together and one of the reasons are able to do. That is another guy. You mentioned that Travis. Connect me remember. Though the seasons long connect me held at a training camp. He was one of those are F- guys and Elaine. Venial was not very happy and he made some veiled reference way back then in October or I guess it was October to say or September to say Do You. It would be nice to have guys in here. Learning the system like he was. He was kind of shooting across the bow. Their while connect knee is A. He's a fiery guy and man. He fits the philly makeup a little bit. That's a good team Carter heart is about nine hundred. Oh at home this year. He like he wins every game at home when they called him up. They felt they had the goalie of the year or the goalie of their future. And it looks like they solidified their position there for a long long time. All right we'll wrap up the top five and won a thought on the Washington capitals and the Tampa Bay lightning now. They both seem to be in a bit of a funk. Maybe that's unfair to put Tampa Bay in their. You know their one in five in their last six as we record this but before not they'd want eleven in a row so I think they're doing okay. They bank some off some points in Tampa Bay. What what are you seeing or not? Seeing the Washington capitals six nine one in their last sixteen and a power play in its last nine games. That's like three for twenty five. Those are not washing capitals. Type A numbers. What I see is that you've got a veteran team. That's taken a little bit of a nap. And then they say hey man we gotta get going here. Let's get going and then they found that. Oh you just don't get going again. We do it all the time. Like you take this nap. I'm talking about. It's like five percent of your game right you. Didn't you come off just a little bit and as I said about Vancouver? They're playing just well enough to lose so they lose again. They lose again and then after three or four games the you know the the leadership group or the coaches whatever it is. They're like okay guys. We gotta lock this down here. Let's get going again well as you try to get going. It's harder and harder and harder to catch up to the game again. And then you're in a six nine and one slump and now your power plays not as predictable or is become too predictable. 'cause is are standing around analyzing it. Think of the Washington powerplay when it works because often backstrom they're kinda wheeling all around that one side of the ice. Oh she's in the middle he comes up to the top will now you watch them your little stationery? They're a little predictable. Doesn't take much to lose it. It's a lot harder to get it back. I don't have a great deal of concern about about either of them help. Pittsburgh lost six in a row and scored eight goals in the six games. It's going to happen to everybody and I guess they all hope that by mid month that they're you know they're back on. The beam are interviewed. Bobby Ryan is coming up next and it is presented by our friends at sure health dot CA. You can call them at one. Eight four four two three five shoot..

"Some kind of event that you heard like you know a sale at Joe's hardware that you heard one time right like I don't I don't maybe there was a guy who wasn't working with all faculties. No there's a guy beside me on the plane. This was last week and he was goon. This sounds like me. He kept. Yeah but he kept doing it and so finally I go. Excuse me cover. I make a symbol like cover your mouth right right and he looks. I go read the papers right and he just looked. Please cover your mouth man. This is such a Ray Ferrara story. Man See this is the fun part of the traveling with you and I appreciate why you would do it but most people would think about saying something but you act right like this guy in your mind crossed the line. While I'm like okay an another day it would just annoy me right right. Like I'd say noise would annoy you. Well Yeah Go. Hey you don't drink water. I'd offer them some water at clear your throat. But this I'm like hey POW like seriously take a gander around you. There's the corona virus is on every day. We see it every day. There are people walking around more people. All the time with masks I know. Do you think they're doing this? Just because all eager tiger almost got throat punch nomination this week again. We'll all. Yeah so so. We board the airplane on Saturday morning to go to Florida. And she's one of these people I look. I like tidy environment right when I on the few occasions. Unlike you where I five business class they give you the hot towel and I use it to clean the area right. My face is clean. I showered. I don't need to have a hot towel on my face. So we're sitting in steerage in the back and hall he's got like a VAT of Lysol wipes and insisting that I do everything. Like arm rests laughed right the tabletop. The headrest and I mean I guess I shouldn't be surprised and it's just preventative measure. You've been married thirty years almost thirty years so Yeah I was GONNA say. Is this a surprise at any point? Here no she. She is super health conscious. When it comes that this was taken to another level but to her credit bit in her defence. I look around. And there's one hundred people doing the same thing on the airplane looking after you drag. She's just so make sure that you're well stocked and ready when you get on your on the plane for your travels later today. We're GONNA talk about the off site tweak role but we're going to do that as part of our between the benches coverage all right. Let's take a look at our top five hockey headlines from the week that was and I think we need to dive into the playoff push share a little bit more deeply. Obviously coming off the trade deadline. We exhausted all the story. Lines that swirled around the changes made their the Vancouver canucks if we start with Canadian team of lost. Four straight as of Last night loss to the Arizona. Coyotes and really not a lot different when you look at the Pacific Division where you look at the Central Division. It is a dog's breakfast with all the teams that are in the mix there now a while ago you suggested at the time this clarify at the time the Vancouver canucks were the best team in Canada. We're not gonNA pile on the Vancouver canucks here. I mean you look at Washington Tampa Bay. These are teams struggles. Bullet happens over. A course of the year is this strictly related to the loss of Jacob Marks from I I actually thought Denko I didn't see all of that game against Arizona but I saw a fair bit. I mean they got unlucky on the crazy bounce on the first goal that the coyotes scored but just a track this back to her mark. Stroman is gone because of injury and now Vancouver to seems to be way less confident than they were prior to that while the the cracks are are widening for sure. The panic is rising in Vancouver. And and then there's of course a group of the fan base in media that say well of course this is going to happen. Happens all the time to them and Look I think Vancouver's by far better team than they've been they've they've they've quite obviously grown into a better group than than they were previously now. They're in a. They're in a spot here. They're still in the first wildcard spot. Got Seventy four points. They're you know they're they've played to less games than Winnipeg Arizona. They you know they all have seventy four points. Those three teams But Vancouver's got two games in hand. They play their next three games at home. Their point up on Minnesota and two points up on Nashville so doesn't matter your division or the wild card that in the west by guest like these. It's just it's jammed in. It's not really going to change. They have said for a couple of years and lots of teams. Say this now. It's kind of become a catchphrase that they wanNA play meaningful games in March which they're playing. However nobody tells you that you're supposed to win those games they're supposed to be meaningful games. They're hard to win and because they're hard to win because everything's a little more desperate and you've never really been in them before you make inexperienced mistakes whether you're a veteran guy or a young guy. You make inexperienced mistakes of playing under the pressure of this playoff race. You're game slips a bit. They missed Jacob marks from terribly They don't defend particularly well. They give up a lot of shots And if your goal tending comes off the save percentage average that you were getting which marks from was among the leaders and you're going to give up a few more goals. Thirteen of their last. Fifteen games drags. They'd given up at least three goals too hard way to win. Now just thinking those thirteen games. I gotTA score four goals to win minimal and the in. That's just. It's a really difficult thing night after night. I mean it it wears on you. You know th they're on pace to be the. Nhl's most improved team offensively. But right now. They're in a dive and they get like last night. Borat and Jake Virtanen. This is a game against Arizona Bullhorn at Jake Virtanen and Tanner Pearson were awesome. That they had a Virtanen that might be the best game. I've Seen Virtanen play Nice. He had an assist. He hit a goal post. He missed breakaway. He was fast and physical is everything that they hoped he would be when they drafted him sixth overall yet it was a pretty quiet night for Patterson and Miller. It's like they can't quite get it all gone at the same time. Quinn Hughes his come off even though he's getting points he's come off his game a little bit which is totally predictable for a player of that age. Kristan of is really taken aback. Step and that's that's their defense pair that they a lot and so you know for ten of it's been you know the the most remarkable thing is. He's been healthy this year. Poor guy gets hurt all the time but he's been healthy but I think he's wearing down a little bit and so they've got to find a little inspiration a little. You know a little more from a few more players. They're not far away but you can see they've played themselves back into a place where you're on the thinnest of wires to make an it or not make out. There's you know now. The pressure comes to the coach Travis. Green who I does. I mean I'll I'll be full disclosure. I'm I'm known travis. For thirty five years these it is a good friend. I hope he does well but I think he's a good coach too and right now. They're they're playing just well enough to lose. He's getting surly though right. And that and then that that's a byproduct of of working in a real intense market and Vancouver is that every Canadian market is that and there's a number of them around North America. No question but man. Sometimes you can just feel the surliness. Lotta Travis he's addressing the media especially Yeah I. I don't think there's any question the day to day in the Canadian markets is much more difficult than most in the league. Heck we saw Claude Julien. You Know Super Experience coaching a week ago. Come out with the great line. While we can't put our skates on and play for the players. Will I hope not? I've seen those guys skate. They're not very good skaters anymore. They wouldn't have a chance. And so you can just see like the pressure that in the you know they they really want to say something else but they don't But for Vancouver like I think Travis has to has to be calm. He's got to be confident. And because your team whether they think so we're not. They take their lead from from their coach. It's not just in Vancouver. I think I think Winnipeg can do it. really easily because Paul Maurice in my opinion deals with the media as well as anybody in the sport really as well as anybody in almost any professional sport that I can think of. He's engaged as you can tell. When he's had enough but he engages he gives a little answer he gives a little information and I think that's the best way it keeps the flies off a little bit when times. Get like this. Another good buddy yours. Dean evison is doing nice work with the Minnesota Wild as the interim head coach there and You know around the trade deadline. Well let's back it up a little I billy Garin. As as a young general manager comes in there and I liked his approach in that there was nothing knee-jerk about anything Garin did leading up to the trade of Jason Zucker to the Pittsburgh Penguins on following with. You know the firing of Bruce Boudreau but by that time he had had enough to just digest some the changes that he felt were important to make and that includes a coaching change. But could we predicted that the changes the adversely that the Minnesota wild have faced and continue to deal with would actually fuel this team back in the playoff mix. No I mean honestly drags. I had written Minnesota off about a month ago and then all of a sudden while two months ago to be honest and then they're like oh man the right back in it again There is some changes that that have been made from Dean Everson. He's gone almost exclusively to Alex. Taylor lock in goal. Since the middle of January stay lax got ten wins and goal at ties in with the Andrei Vasilevskiy for number one in the NHL. That's after their last game they beat Nashville. Three one Kevin. Fiala who was brought over in a trade from when Paul Fenton was the general manager. Fenton Nuham really well from Nashville. And he made the trade for Mikhail Grantland. Who's started the play really well in Nashville again? This is looking like a trade that a teams are getting something from Fiallos. Got Five multipoint games in a row. He is a dynamic player. And he's really at the peak of his confidence under Dean Evanson. Their six three an old The rate back in the mix as we mentioned. Now they're one point behind the wildcard Behind the first wildcard in the West. And so there in that clump with Vancouver Winnipeg Arizona in Nashville. They've somehow found a way to fight their way. Back in. Some of this too is well. Would you always go back to this point? I go back to Brian Burke When when they won the Stanley Cup in two thousand eight? I believe the first thing he did when he when he was doing his interviews was he thanked the previous general manager. He thanked the previous organization. Because you don't just drop in and change everything yourself you're you're you're reaping the benefits of some of the positives that have been done in front of you. And and I would say you know like Paul Fenton Acquired Kevin Fiala and that's worked really well for Bruce. Boudreau was on a pretty good little run as coach Just before he was fired now. Bill Garin decided. I need to make a change. And while they've won seventy percent of the game since DNA evidence taken over. So there's lots that's gone into this but one of the steps that I think you know has to be acknowledged is that they're young guys Ryan Auto Jordan greenway loop cannon. They've started to play and produce on a more consistent basis. Now you've got fiyal is well. You'll Ericsson AC is another one. A first rounder. From a few years ago. These guys all developed under Bruce Boudreau and lots is coming together right now for Minnesota and to me it's a it's an off the Mat story like I. I didn't think they were. They were going to be a factor at all and yet here. They are in a and I'm happy for Dean by the way if you haven't heard I think it's episode two. We had Dean Everson on this as one of our guests. I'm telling you and this is just not crop up our show. Please go back and listen to it. Find the Dean Evanson episode and listen to this Guy My old roommate and Binghamton in the American Hockey League. I'm man we had. We had some fun and he is. He opened up the barrel a couple of times. Monday night in bulk up so The General Manager and National Hockey League honored Bob Gainey. They honor a hockey type on an annual basis. As part of these meetings so Kelly criminal the Vegas Golden Knights has some time to kill so I met him after work by the way for a beverage..

"Hockey podcast. I'm Darren Gregory along with my good friend. Rape Ferraro I had fun four days in Boca Raton Florida and look not to come off like I'm complaining but it always happens this way when you have a limited time right where we're so Saturday and Sunday hauling I spend at the Boca Beach resort beautiful spot. It was coolish Ray. It was cool. They Yeah Low. Twenty slow ponies. Then when we got the suits on and start working for a living and covering the general manager's meetings it jumps to like twenty six degrees on Monday you know twenty seven on Tuesday and yesterday was like thirty degrees Celsius. And I've seen you before. I remember the Mega Stanley Cup. Final I mean. You couldn't walk from the elevator to the front door without having to change your shirt so I think you'll appreciate my issues. You know drags I I love when people are talking about you how. It's a dry heat and all that and you know as opposed to you. Know the humid heat and we all know the difference. But now oh my God. That was that that Vegas series was like like doing it on the equator. It was like it was so hot. Do you remember the guys were beside? And for some reason they didn't quite think about maybe getting a little roof over top of them and we were really well looked after so we have like a little roof over top of us. I Remember Josie. Theodore was melting as he was on the air. And I'm like Oh my God. They came in the fan too which is blue that steaming hot error around was brutal. One thing I will say about your trip your work on TV there. We've never quite figured out the suits in the sun thing now. No no not that. You should be wearing a shirt but some a little more casual. Perhaps I don't know And we've we've gone back and forth on this with tsn and the brass don't get it because they've never had to do it right I I recall years ago. We would wear golf shirts. But then you know somebody in management said well it? It doesn't look professional. So you're GONNA have to put a suit jacket over your golf shirt. Well that looks worse. What's the point? Guide rather wear a dress shirt than a golf shirt at that stage and it just. I don't know I look like so. There are some that used the golf shirt jacket. I think that looks terrible. There are some that. Use The shirt and tie in nogent because they think that looks a little more casual. Have that looks like you didn't have time to put your jacket on and I. I don't know it should be a little more casual to me. You're at the beach man. Like how stupid do we feel walking to in Vegas member? We did it upstairs at the pool. Bosma politics here's everybody. They're all in their bathing suits. And here he's five knuckleheads walking up in a full suit to the pool and we got to stand there you just. I don't know it just doesn't feel right I can. I can barely walk back into the hotel yesterday because my parents were stuck. You know like where. That's three visual. Id trying to Kinda Waddell towards the door. But you're standing in line and we'll we'll end with this but my one of my favorite things to do especially not environment because Ryan Rashaad always gets the boondoggle assignment of hosting this thing right. And he's like you man when the waterworks start to go. It's just unending so as he's talking. I'm watching him and you can just see the big beads of sweat running and now it's running into his eyes. These dried trying not to blink. Because he's worried he's going to get caught on TV. It's dripping off his chin. Can I tell the people about a little bit about Drake's here and yeah we work so we're in Saint Petersburg Russia for the world championships a few years ago and so we're walking over to our shoot in in front of the Hermitage museum one of the world's great museums and as we're walking over there are camera guy. David Parker is wheeling this cart full of lights and the camera. And all this junk and us me you were Shaw or walking over there and were carrying nothing and you say to restock. Hey if you've got a good line to come out of the peace with and he says what do you mean? He said while Duffy would for sure have a little bit of Trivia to come out here some history for sure so we get through the hit and are actually we start the head and Ryan says as he's trying to say in front of one of the great collections of paintings in the world. He says in front of a great collection of paint in the world. Now we start to giggle right away. You're like what is this a Sherman Williams now. He's rattled he screws it up a second time now. A third time and rate one about finished this person. I'm not really sure what the odd image was but walked into the background behind him and we burst into laughter. This all started. We were there for thirty minutes three and it was because you got into his little brain and you had him turned around in circles man. That's part of it sport for me at times. It really truly is just helps you get through those long trips speaking of the the world hockey championships. And we're not gonNA make light of a very serious global situation of course with the threat of the virus and everything else it was. It was a big topic of discussion for the general managers. I felt like on Wednesday Commissioner Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill. Daly did a really good job of trying to explain the position of the National Hockey League in some other leagues around the world. Be It hockey or other sports or in Europe. are not necessarily canceling games or but events have been canceled. You know The AA JEFF has had to cancel events this this month looking into April Aba Conference call and I believe March seventeenth to start looking at the tournaments in April and then of course that takes us to the world championships in May in In Switzerland the NHL Right now. Ray is saying look. We're embracing the corona virus on a day to day. Sort of scenario weren't constant communication with the World Health Operation The organization story with Health Canada with the CDC in the United States so those are the governing bodies when it comes to this kind of stuff but you know aside from the actual virus itself man. It's it's daunting trying to wrap your brain around all of the things that may or may not happen at varying levels of sport. Well when you look at all the information that we get bombarded with some of it seems alarmist. Some of it is too dismissive but you can see what you know where some real concerns are a really really great article. I thought anyway talking about those that saying they're they're trying to control the virus mean or are really looking at this incorrectly like it's not going to be controlled. What they're trying to do is mitigate the damage that it can that it can further do and so the events that are being canceled. Are you know putting mass number of people together? You know eighteen thousand people in a hockey game. Couple of Swiss League playoff games have been postponed for a couple of weeks. Postpone their whole League playoffs until March the fifteenth to try and get a better handle onto. You know how they can go forward. Look at the information. We're getting you know. How do you prevent it wash your hands? Cover your mouth when you cough like it's it seems pretty rudimentary yet. Clearly this is an issue that can't just be discarded and so we're you know we're GonNa have to sit and wait and the NHL. From their perspective they banned all business travel to the effect that areas outside of the United States and Canada. And I guess there's no other way to do it but to look at it day by day you you can't. You can't make a policy for three weeks from now because you don't know what's going to be could be better. It could be worse and they'll have to continually monitor your right. And that's exactly the approach of hockey Canada and USA hockey. I'm sure as well take yourself back though to your playing days and it's a different world when you went to the World Championship Did you Matt and Landon at that Point area your life. So you're married with kids you know. It's it's a challenge for Hockey Canada. To convince you know any dollars to come world championship now largely. Because they're tired they're beat up. Maybe they've just lost a playoff round. There's lots of variables and factors that. Go into the decision making but if if you're a young married player you know. Are you going to feel some heat from home? If this global threat is still in existence come May and the AA JEFF has not cancelled the world championship. Would that be another element in your decision making us whether or not you go to represent your country one hundred percent and it's not even whether you feel heat from home it's lead feel responsibility. Okay so say I go to area acts this year. It's it's in Switzerland and I come back with an I have the virus Now I come home and then days after I get home. I don't feel well but in the meantime I have now infected my wife The kids now we're on quarantine inside the house for two weeks like this definitely will Will create a rather large layer of uncertainty as far as getting players to that of course depending on whether the tournaments even going to be a run. We don't we don't even know that yet and I suspect that that that might not be locked down finalized until a couple of weeks before the tournament do scheduled to start which is in early. May It is episode. Twenty one of the rain Drake's hockey. Podcast Bobby Ryan of the Ottawa. Senators is is coming up on the PODCASTS. Shortly we recorded this The interview with Bobby Ryan a few days back and man was he candid. Was He thoughtful. He is everything that we continue to tell you about Bobby Ryan so look forward to that throat punch candidates rate Interesting to say the least. Don't WANNA divulge too much but there's been a lot of talk particularly over the Hart Trophy right and who should win it. You can too players from the same team be nominated all those things so right or wrong. I just you know Pierre. Lebrun Frankie Valli and Ryan Rashad who? We've already abused on the podcast in a segment. The other day about this debate and like I'm not even having this debate. You three knuckleheads can talk but that like. I just am not engaging in it because it's it doesn't make a lot of sense to me so I know you've got some strong feelings out. Yeah you know I do. That's an easy one for me. There there is a list of a couple this week but Right Oh yeah table with. This is an easy week. Okay well can you. You WanNa Save the other. Yeah let's say we'll just we'll get through them. We'll get through order here. You've got your paper there. I can see it. It's all you're you're driving this bus here. So I had this bus of good questions and ask Ray and dregs and rob grade reminded me of the soup slurp who by the way deserves throat punch And he deserves more than throat. Punch a button again not to make light of global illness and everything else but and for anyone who doesn't follow. Rex Chapman on twitter. I'm amused by this. Sometimes he crosses the line but whatever In this yeah in this particular video and I'm sure our listeners of of seen it if not go find it. There's this dude who walks into. Was it a farm boy? Grocery store whatever goes to the hot soup area and just grabs a ladle and takes a SLURP rate out of the big VAT of soup automatically. I started chuckling. Because I'm thinking back to my days as you know the initiations and the hazing and all the nonsense that we had to endure hockey teams and I'm like Oh my God. How good would that be right to be initiated as a rookie into this group? You've got to go to farm boy and you've got to take a slurp three bites of soup now the timing with a corona virus. And all that okay. It's it's not appropriate. We understand this but I found it. Funny Well I look at it and I'm like are you complete eighty how gross it is be completely unaware of what is going around like. Do you have a computer like Dorito paper? Do you see the news like.

"Thousand eighteen. They've been splitting the home games at both arenas while the now announced that the islanders are now done with at the end of this season the regular season. They're going to be guns. Oh from Brooklyn over and out Bob. I never play there again. They're GONNA play all their playoff games. This season at NASA and then all of their regular season games in playoffs next season at Nassau Coliseum. So I think that's going to be a Neat Swan Song. Because after that they moved into a new building near Belmont Park on a full-time basis but Got Me to thinking about great arenas and that's rb computing web poll today what is your favorite former. Nhl Arena whether it's torn down or not whether you were actually there. Were all your memories from television. What is your favorite former? Nhl Arena and your favorite memory of the moments within that arena. I'm going to say northlands Coliseum for you James. Well what northlands is okay. Been around a while when I when I got here. Maybe maybe not living in a living in a town like I grew up in Sudbury When we moved to Ottawa there was no there was no team yet. The Civic Center was the biggest in any town. I lived in at the time so when I did come out here and saw big size arena. It was pretty cool. It was pretty cool and then the atmosphere was well off the map Rasiah. I arrived in one thousand nine hundred. Eighty five Steve with Molson who is sponsoring the team and I walked in and said here's your season tickets. You'RE GONNA look after the oilers. Here's an expense account. Here's a company car and we go to every game you know for free. Oh Okay Okay. I can do that and who's playing tonight. Yeah that's Wayne now and all that small group of guys that have been kicking up some so northlands is cool very nice. What Are Yours Montreal? Forum would be one because I was big fan when I was little and I remember going to my first halves game and I felt like literally felt like this must be heaven or something like that like walking up to the building and seeing those lit up white hockey sticks as big giant white lights that were in the shape hockey sticks that were on the front of the form back. Then that you'd see at the start of hockey night in Canada. I was actually in front of that building looking at it. Like Oh my God. I'm going to the Montreal to watch the Montreal Canadians play. I remember the way it looked when the guys get in there. I'm in the nose bleeds but I'm still seeing the Montreal Canadian skating around taking the warm up. I remember the hot dogs And the game I saw. It was a playoff game between Montreal. Quebec the Battle of Quebec and I think I think it was say Bowl Bergelin scoring and overtime so the home side was not very happy but it sure was a hell of a night and I will never forget that and I also think about Montreal formed from the Soviets Montreal Canadian's exhibition game where they played to the three draw in a game that a lot of people call the greatest game ever played certainly one of the most exciting Steve. Shutt about that a number of years after it happened and asked His grace game play no way not at all. Maybe the most exciting though. There's no question and tragic accident has head that night so I'd have to go Montreal forum all the way for me in terms of just you know as Ken Dryden always says you know the Golden Age of hockey is whoever was playing that you loved when you were ten years old. Well that's it for my. Yeah my very first game in an NHL Reno was the Montreal Forum in Nineteen. Seventy four nine hundred seventy five. And it's I I've seen the RENA and I was. I was completely struck with how bright it was when I walked in because of course it has to be right for TV and I remember I went to a bunch of junior games for the wolves you know. That was a Friday night deal right. That was big night out but I was twelve or thirteen. And someone's thirteen or fourteen. That was my first game. And that's the number one thing I remember while. Is it ever bright. You know the way they have them. The rink all lit up the ice surface and that was Boston and Ken. Dryden was a net and Bobby. Orr was still playing for Boston. So that was a cool game and the other one. I went to Maple Leaf Gardens in one thousand nine hundred seventy two. There was a small series. Then Steve What was that thing. Oh yeah Russia's series. I went to one I went to that game. Did you leave early like you did? Game seven of the two thousand three conference final with me. I remember that I got to go. It was in the fall that I got to go and I missed. The first day of school it was down trodden was going to school up in. Sudbury but we sat. So Hi Steve. You couldn't see the far side of the rink. There was a beam block here. Few deduct now and that was the maple garden so that was the greatest memory I had. I still have some finance for Chicago Stadium as well. That place was. I never got to go but it always looked like it was just an amazing place to watch a game with you. Know the the stands right on top and it was that will stadium organ. They had their That looked like it was just absolutely raucous. Every.

"I've already watched some curling. This is this is a very tough week on fans of tsn and the reason is the curling is on three times a day. Nine two and seven o'clock eastern Missouri. Last week I think right with Rachel home and making a run at the Scotties tournament of hearts lost in the final. Yeah Laws Epping as the guy from Ontario's in there but they got to change it steve like I I don't mind watching curling but all I do is flip you know if I if I whip it on. Okay the BRIARS ON. I got to see some guys northern Ontario or Jacobson his buddies and moisture. Berta course and ensor about fifteen minutes long. So I just I take off from that do whatever I'm doing and come back to watch the last four stones or the last two you know and so it's way too long. I I was talking to Warren Hansen. The guy sort of the guru of curly the other day. Who's since left? He was go made curling what it is and I was talking to him and he agrees they gotta go down to aid ends. They got they've they've got to spruce spruce up the old fence and there's many ways they can do it you know where he actually place rocks at the beginning of the the beginning of an end in your place them all over the ice right and and two or three of them or whatever. There's there's a million things that they've gotTA DO Steve to improve that game for people to get interested in my mind anytime I've watched it like you know I generally Rachel home in his who I watch because You know I've met her a few times and They're the Ottawa rank. And you know so I always have a soft spot for them. And they're generally playing at the highest level that the biggest tournaments so I watch a bit of them but it just unfortunately it's like soccer which I also love. It's like you're going to have to clone me a couple of times boy time in the course of a day to watch all these sports but if if there was anything else available right you're gonna you're GonNa flip curling on and you're going to go like this hoof here we go. You know the biggest change. They should make to that sports. Steve is get rid of the eight rocks right. There's four guys on each team each to rocks. Get rid of that fucking thing. Go to five rocks. You know one rock each. I don't know this gets to or something like that but always worth an experimental every every sport has hybrids right. You know they got the new. What is it the two-person curling mixed curling whatever they call it and we wanna gold medal in that with? John Morrison his partner. So they've done a little of that Yuppies done it with the rugby sevens. Hockey's gone to three on three overtimes. Every sport mucks around with it. Volleyball's got its beach volleyball. So yeah why not experiment. If I don't know what the numbers are like. I didn't come prepared to talk about curling ratings and things like that but If the numbers are dropping then prepare something else. I guess and like I say I I didn't I just was before we did the show. This Sunday. I flip it on the fucking curling's on again you know so anyway. Prepare for a long week. You know what I did. I if I if I can jump on your answering your own question there. I saw the move your Joe Joe. Rabbit saw that on the weekend. I thought it was tremendous such a good movie. Joe Joe Rabbit. I saw it and and forget. What's the little boy who's Who's got an imaginary friend? Who is Adolf Hitler? A very very goofball version of Adolf Hitler. Oh Yes yes yeah great movie. Yeah he's growing up in Nazi Germany. And he's basically he's going through. Nazi school ends up Getting too stupid grenade accident and he and his mom basically you're just trying to negotiate their way through the final days of World War Two and Just thought it was beautifully done. Great movie now I watch so much. Tv meant so much. Netflix and stuff. Yeah movie cool. Good glad you liked it. I did very much. The highlight of the week goes in sports. I'd have to maybe look in the direction of Bobby Ryan and we did talk. I did talk a little bit about it on Fridays on the last episode always going to get away from the dates the last episode. I did sneak a little reaction into it because we had recorded earlier in the day and And so it wasn't something we talked about but I did put some info in and some thoughts on it having seen it. But I haven't gotten your take on Bobby Ryan and the performance. He had his first game back at home in three months because he was of course in the NHL assistance program dealing with alcohol and so his first game back at home to get a goal would have been so cool and a win and they did but he gets not one not two. But a hat-trick got a hat-trick in his first game back at home really emotional on the bench. And I'm sure you're like everybody else in the Sporting World Jim completely touch by it. Oh there's there's no doubt you know we we've had shows. I'm a huge fan of sports. When when it comes to the comeback you know and I think over my life I'd I'd have to. I'd have to pause for a while to to remember it but I always go to sacco. Speaking hockey was always one of my greatest we were doing a show and that guy had stomach cancer and he came back to play and I remember bawling my eyes out when he stepped onto the ice in Montreal when he came. I thought that was fantastic. I was Jennifer Capriati. Who was depressed and became addicted to heroin. I think and she came back and won a major so I mean that's that's a longtime ago but but you don't see it that often you know you you don't see the really great stories of some guys who are phasing out of support for whatever reason this thing. This is the greatest comeback statement game I've ever seen in my life. No there's no question about it no question about it at all. Mariel came back from Hodgkin's but but this thing where you know not not that year that he started plane. Okay or what a great story. The guy came back after being in the NHL Substance Assistance Program and fought his way back onto the team. That's all great. The first game back I came back. You mentioned the pressure and you know particularly the media coverage of it would be huge because he went public with it. Someone asked him and his press conference and the guiding Zoff Hattie. Just I was well enough when I thought you know. I think it's I think it goes down. As as one of the great feel good stories in all of sports week earlier we had thought Dave ayers coming in you know the the Zamboni driver comes in and gets to play half of an NHL game gets the win against the leafs in Toronto on a Saturday night. The Guy who actually works for the leafs I thought we might have our feel good top feel good human interest. Nhl Story right there of the year and then less than a week later. Bobby Ryan comes in and And maybe trump's it because that was that was kind of an oddity this one was steeped in the comeback in the human interest in the athletic side it had all the components of an amazing story and it was terrific for sure. Yeah and so you ask yourself why right. There's the obvious right while the the day came back and he was and and I think the main reason is though Steve is because it is such a low percentage chance of not just athletes. But anyone right. Who GETS INTO TROUBLE GETS addicted or is addicted and stays addicted and the the the odds are coming out of that or rare are rare. You know I was reading the other day. Read up on this quite a bit and I was reading the other day. It's it's kind like a four or five percent chance that a guy is going to get clean and sober in his first attempt to get six months or a year sober now. It goes way up after that if you can get a year but This thing is there's so many stories where guys have been taken down from it and again not just athletes you know but we all know stories of where the guy goes. Oh yeah that's great. I haven't seen him around. You know you got fired from his job and never came back and his family turf them and all that. Shit you know. So that's what makes this thing amazing because drugs and booze can take people down. Yeah let me ask you about that. Because you know you've been through it and you know it's always a worry. It's been three months since he entered this assistance program and now he's back playing hockey and he had this amazing experience and the three goal performance. You always worry no matter who you are about a relapse scenario. I gotTA imagine it. The only thing that can do is is is. Help the path that you're on to have everybody raving about you to have this amazing experience. It's almost like the gods of said you know what you're on the right path. Keep her going. And here's a reward for for what you've been doing. Yeah I mean you got the one thing is you. Don't WanNa take a chance right so like a lot of advice that was given to me and then I get to give to other people about it who are trying to dig themselves out of this stuff is you. Don't want to have a press conference about this thing. And he literally. Did you know maybe you just want to keep this under wraps? Let's let's get. Let's get you a year sober here before And without killing them you know it's like because what happens if your relapse you know what happens if you don't get it on your first shot You know the other thing is which I'm glad he did go public because don't Kid Yourself. It's it's it's a white knuckle thing you know when you first start out and you need a certain amount of policing okay. That's that's why treatment is very effective with a Lotta people and most people because it's full lockdown. You can't get out. There's someone twenty four hours a day. They're keeping an eye on you and unfortunately that's the tough part of it with him going public. I think it's a great idea because teammates are privy to it. They might have been anyway. I'm sure they must have been but what's so. No one knows what's going to happen with them right. He steps away from the game he he starts to go on this path of recovery and no one knows where it's going to go and God he shows up to a couple of months later right gone. Okay I got after boys. I'm I'm I'm ready. I'm dialed in now. And so they all know and that's great that they know because they believe Steve. No one will take their eyes off him any fans to write any fans that see him in a bar. Anybody that might be considering serving this guy. If they know who Bobby Ryan is. They're going to say sure. Bobby I don't think he should actually order this. Yeah or the other thing is you could you? Can you know this this sort of tips right? When you're you don't drink anymore and a lot of people go what what are you GonNa do. When I'm at a event that I have to be at or something and someone keeps saying. Let's say. Come on Bobby. Let's have a rum and coke or something like that you know the the best thing to do is tell them right is i. Don't drink anymore. You don't have to go into the whole idea of a problem. So are you always carry a glass full right? Soft DRINK IN IT. And so everyone thinks you have one you know but unfortunately especially if you're a public figure that that's why you don't merely maybe say much because people can there so vicious they could be at some sort of reception or a dinner and you have a glass of Pop song. We all look at Bobby. Look at them over their whip and back another drink soul. It's a fucked up thing at the beginning for you but What what would this help them or or hinder. There's nothing but positive. I have no doubt. Yep One of the hockey not want to get to before we hit our first break as the New York islanders. And I'm sure as guy who this just in Jim knows a lot of the nineteen eighties. Edmonton oilers and that dynasty. You will remember all those games that they used to play at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. The islanders won the four. I four Stanley cups of the decade of the nineteen eighties. And then they're kind of knocked off their high horse by the oilers. Who would win for the next five anyway? Lots of great memories at Nassau Coliseum but the islanders back in two thousand fifteen move to Brooklyn and that lasted until twenty eighteen and then they started since two thousand eighteen. They've been splitting the home games at both arenas while the now announced that the islanders are now done with at the end of this season the regular season. They're going to be guns..

"Close today. James RB Computing Web poll today. Certainly were all inspired by Bobby. Ryan's story his attempts at a comeback after dealing with alcohol issues. And everybody's pulling for him and it got us to wondering what would you say is the most? Inspirational Athlete Story. That you've ever heard of there been so many over the years whether it's a tale of sort of a triumphant comeback just anything that any storyline really inspired you any that come to mind. I do I do and I. It's the guy still does it. And I think it's Corey Hirsch. The goalie played for Vancouver. Yep We're Olympia and former Olympic and this guy has made it his mission to talk about mental health and depression and everyone's aware of the big the big day one of the best promotions ever. Steve of all time is bell. Let's Talk Day and this guy still carries on that thing. Every time I see stuff on social media. He's talking about you. Know getting people to talk about it and supporting them and stuff. And that's that one comes to mind right away for me on that and I'm sure there are several others. I always liked the Koivu. Come back that guide stomach stomach cancer. Game Shot Zakho when he came back from the Jennifer Capriati is another one. I'm really dating myself here. But she got addicted to heroin and came back and won a major tennis major. Yeah those great stories. And it doesn't necessarily have to be battle with addiction and overcoming that that certainly inspiring and certainly qualifies but it can be any number of different things like the PAT. Tillman story was incredible. One of the most Patriot patriotic athletes we ever saw just played four years with the Arizona. Cardinals live in the life of reilly the guys ripped he's healthy good lookin' he enlisted. He left the NFL enlisted in the US. Army and sadly tragically was killed in Afghanistan from friendly fire. A couple of years later two years after joined the military. I don't know that you could do a better story of inspiration than that giving your life. "Than that thankfully Netflix. So there's Bobby Ryan and conversation with the media on Friday and I thought that was courageous. It was inspirational. And I don't know how you don't pull for a guy like Bobby Ryan After a performance like that yeah you know everyone was wondering right. Wh Why he left the game and I think it was. He showed up for practice and then left in the middle of the practice or something. That's right they called it personal issues and everyone of course weighs in on that and I don't WanNa say that's one of the obvious things but it's certainly one of the for lack of a better term one of the options that you look at saying why. I wonder what this is and there's no doubt my mind right that there was. There was something strongly personal when a guy has sort of pulled off the ice or leaves the Ice Different Than Steve. Guy Doesn't show up and then they say look we've got a family issue or something like that right. There's a couple things here. That are remarkable for sure. You know it's IT'S A. It's a humbling day. When you gotTa face your demons when you gotta face was bringing you down when you gotta face mismanaging your life completely Taking it down at the seams career wise family wise friend wise all that stuff and so there's that issue where the guy immediately I guess went into the player Assistant Program for Substance Abuse. Which is which is fantastic. That that he did that The other thing is to come out and speak about it publicly so quickly is is really good on one. Hand Steve and on the other hand. I'm not sure I would have done that right away. can I jump in? Maybe going just like he did in fact He. He's been around the team skating with the team for many weeks now and he said I. I've been dreading this day where I've got to talk about it in the media so it wasn't a right away sort of thing and he's not back in the lineup just yet but I think that is imminent now because his fitness testing has been very good over the last few weeks. Yeah and listen. I'm you know obviously this the addictions close to my heart anyone's listening to the show over the last year or so understands that and and I couldn't be more proud of when I I don't know Bobby Ryan I've never met him but but I certainly know what he went through. You know. It's unfortunate that he has to go public with this thing again. The team probably for goes look. You've got to make a statement here because because of the situation people know this. Now you've been around you. Have the word gets out right. Steer and it's unfair to those those people public people that they have to come forward and talk about. It's a highly highly private matter. I don't think he felt he had to do it. Somebody's stashed in a news conference like that new scrum on Friday. I don't think anybody knew. Exactly what the issue was until about four or five minutes into the SCRUM One of the reporters asked a we. Do you WanNa talk about what it is. You're seeking counsel for and he. He freely admitted it was alcohol and that was the first I've ever heard of it officially in terms. I don't think it didn't. I didn't get a vibe. That Bobby Ryan spoke on Friday because the word was already out there. I'll tell you what. Why don't you want you tell people that? And you're maybe a month sober or a couple of months over fuck. You are so under a microscope right. Every time someone sees you in a in a parking lot or within five hundred yards of liquor store or have a glass in your hand. Data Charity Event. All voted for nobis. Okay so you would only know that you had some sort of counseling about recovery. So it's even more widely impressed when he has the option to go. No I do not want to talk about my personal life here. This is about the sense and and he'd have every excuse to do that but he chooses to to talk about it when the Guy Asom and and and that makes them very remarkable that might be part of the healing process for someone like that and and you know everybody's diverse No nobody has the same healing process. Nobody has what everybody needs different things in that healing process. And maybe for Bobby Ryan this getting it out there getting it all out in the open so it stops being taboo or whatever maybe as good and helps him along and And helps you can get back to where he was where somebody else would rather not go through that. It helps their healing process to keep it in house Yeah I like. I say if it was me I would i. Would I would choose not to do that so no I don't fuck I don't want to tell me what I'm fighting this battle But he but he didn't and and that is a real credit to the guy for him to say that when asked about it and we're most people may not. I know I wouldn't so in your bottle with it. When did the light go off where you said you did want to start talking about it and I would call people's attention to episode six of this particular podcast that was almost entirely devoted to you discussing your past demons with with alcohol and Drug Abuse When did you decide that I wanted to? I want to start talking about this. I forget in. Oh my my my first crack at trying to quit was in the mid to thousands early two thousands and I just had to get away. I have to go away and I had the Gig doing the morning show with you and Jr. and and I had no idea of it at that point just for the record for those who are longtime listeners. Yeah and so. I remember meeting the boss I had. I had this not a full contract. We signed sort of a six month deal because they weren't sure what was going to happen with the radio station actually way back then and I knew I had to go away. I was just. I was beaten down and he said when we did this deal this six months from now. What about holidays you know and and I said don't worry about it? You know all work the six and then I thought to myself may maybe I'll I'll take the opportunity to get away and I said you know I may need some some time off and he said why you know and I said I've getting some tests I was making all this shit up. You know. Get some tests from the doctor. I'm waiting to get results. And he said are you okay and and and I don't know what I was thinking. The wheels are spinning fast. But I knew I had to get help. And then the next day. I checked myself into treatment I phoned. The boss said the doctor phone and said I forget what I said. High blood pressure something and he said I got immediately take off work which was sort of bullshit and then I went to treatment the next day and then I phoned the boss and I said no. I'm at a Substance Abuse Treatment Facility. I wasn't real big on telling anyone about it. I asked for him if he can keep that confidential between him and he said absolutely he was. It was Chris Gordon and he was generally concerned about my well-being You know when I first did it Steve when I when I thought I would start to tell. People is a couple of guys. Phoned me After I got out of treatment guys I've met in there and you developed this quick bond and they phone me about six months later because they had relapsed and they're in a terrible state and the guy called me and said. Can you help me you know could you? Can you give me a hand here? I'm GonNa make it right you know and I remember saying fuck. I'll be right there of a right there. Like a lot of guys were for me and jumped in my car to drive a lot in our town to find this guy and it ended up helping them back on the road to recovery. And that's what made me think you know the the greatest thing about it and Bobby Ryan would probably attest to this when his when his thoughts probably were. Should I do this or shouldn't that you have the opportunity to help someone now by going public like he did and in my case. I'm nowhere near a public figure but once I experienced that when I ended up sitting with this guy for about two hours he was high and drunk at the time and then we waited around and got him back into treatment and Offi went and I think he's sober to this day. So that's what I thought you know you've got you've got a real opportunity here yeah So that's a long answer to your question. But but that's when I decided I should start to tell some that's that's great and I think is always going to be varying times when people and at varying reasons why people want to talk about it and actually in. Mendez who works at? Tsn Does the drive in the afternoon show He put that question. Bobby Ryan about the idea of talking about it as he is right now and the idea of maybe being a role model and inspiring others. Yeah I guess in in that sense of the silver lining you know. I'd like to be a role model for.

"Oh six meant in place in bells corners. I gotta say is a sense Fan. This whole Milan Lucci teach trade to Calgary for James Neal really not sitting with me very well like pretty much for about a year and a half now. I've grown to fully hate watching Bobby Ryan play the sport of hockey unlike anything about it. Maybe if he were making reasonable money but this guy I can't watch it any longer. No one wants that contract and certainly the sends do need it because they have to worry about being at the floor. They're nowhere near here. The floor Bobby Ryan left town but just something bothers me. It was always like yeah we get Bobby Ryan but Edmonton's gotTa deal with Milan Lucici thing so we're not alone in Ottawa well suddenly Lucci contract is tradable. Would I love of seeing this ends reach out to Edmonton and make some kind of Milan Lou cheech deal that involves body Ryan going the other way. It's not that I'm in love with me line Lou cheech but the fact of the matter is I'd rather watch him just because he somebody do I know he's going to underachieve. I know he's not going to score the way he's paid to score but at least it'd be a different guy out there frustrating me. I know what Bobby Ryan's going to do. He's going to frustrate me in his his own unique way. I WANNA fresh easy. Give me fresh frustration. That's what I'd like to see. He listening might be a hell of a guy off the ice chance to golf with them. A couple of summers ago is a Nice Guy and probably a mentor from that perspective a social sense but on the ice you know what I do not want if on the coach of that team my young guys trying to emulate with Bobby Ryan does it there. You got a guy who falls a lot. You got a guy who leaves the ice a lot and comes back. You got a guy blocks a tremendous amount of hockey pucks with his injured hands. You got a guy never does anything remotely physical and then gets in a fight with CAL Tarez. I can't stand watching him. Try and change. He'll go to the bench and take about twenty minutes doing so changing it absolutely the wrong time and nine hundred ten times going back back to the bench looking like he just finished his first marathon anyway. It's clear that if one puts their mind to it you can get rid of just about any contract in Ottawa. The salary floor situation is going to keep Bobby Ryan in Ottawa senator for the foreseeable future. That'll do it for today. Enjoy your day and nowadays time for a moment of random HOOPLA. What if that guy from smashing Pumpkins lost his car keys here we go <music> catchy title doc and they were ragging him ahead to stood saying them kitchen?.

"They would have made that deal with Vegas at deadline and maybe not the deal that was turned down at the end because Bobby Ryan, I think was still in it. But if they had taken Bobby Ryan out of that deal and traded Carlson Vegas, I think that would have been their best trait. And you think hindsight twenty twenty they would have. I think if how everything played, everything played itself out if you're gonna trade era, Carlson without Bobby Ryan. Then I think you do that at the deadline last year to Vegas and you probably get a better deal. I just think oughta was fillet. Sophy at the top. It changed several times back then it was, we want Bobby Ryan going to trade with air Carlson when he got Dell dealt by himself, you know, they made the offer. I believe it was eight times eleven. I believe it was eight years eighty eight million. I don't think they ever got into structure or anything like that. It was just like, this is what's going to be on the table, but I don't believe they ever talked about structure or anything like that. But I do believe that Carlson's people felt that that was just like to say that we made the offer. I just think at the end of the day, Carlson didn't believe in the ownership. He was going to go and they just didn't want it to last into the regular season wanting to San Jose here in a second. But let's pause on Ottawa while we're here the headline from this week, Zac Smith. Yep. And the wave. He gets waved Matt, Shane, outspoken about it. This is a kick in the nuts. This is a tough one for I think he used the phrase balls. Apologies are rephrase. This is a kick in the balls for us. Nonetheless. Allow those players. Not amused exactly. Secretive tried to move Zac Smith at various times. I believe going back to last years trade. That's true. So it shouldn't come as any surprise, but could they're not have been another way this was handled? Well, I think the problem is is that they tried to trade them and they there's just not much available right now. And so that's what happens. You know, first of all, I think Ottawa was trying to get rid of the contract. I think also there's a long hangover from what happened last year in the way some of the things that happened in their room, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're completely trying to change it. And you know what I'm curious to see, honestly, Jeff is if this is not the last Santer with a ticket that we see on waivers, I wonder if the goal is ends up there Anderson Khandan or another player that they might not be very happy with. You think this is everything must go. This is we're going to see if we can lighten our cap. Yes. I understand this is strictly a business. You know, this isn't, you know, eight years old wanted to get your name on the Stanley Cup, and this is the hockey business. So I understand that. But what scored to me was there's nothing that Ottawa can do that will portray them in a more favorable light, no matter what it is at this time. That's what it seems. The me please make decision with Matt Martin. I'm sure that upset a lot of people dressing, Mitch..
