"Begins and there's so much conversation going on about what happens next for the SEC and we are so excited to welcome our next guest to the program. The legendary Hall of Fame coach, Barry Switzer, won multiple national championships at Oklahoma, won a Super Bowl for the cowboys and first of all, coach, thank you for making time. We have been looking forward to this for a long time. I appreciate it. Paul, it's your damn fault. You haven't called me a glimpse and Birmingham cost me all the time. This first time you called me. Well, I felt like we had tried. Maybe we just couldn't, maybe we just couldn't get through. But if you're taking wimps calls, then we're pretty fortunate. I've been wimping up in friends for a long, long time. We have really helped. With his travels through basketball countries and with him. I would like to ask you, but I'll start with a headline that you helped create the other day out in Tulsa with your thoughts on the SEC and Oklahoma and I would like to start there because it is now happening in the we're all eager to hear what you have to say about the sooners coming to the SEC. Well, I made the comment the other day that someone asked me, I'm going to give them an answer. My opinion, I don't live in their house over there at OU anymore. I don't go there to watch them practice. I don't evaluate the talent. I don't grade your film. I'm completely divorced from that program. But when you're a 122nd defense in college football, you've got to get a lot better for you to play in that league and the SEC. There are several teams in that league I can name them that are more talented defensively than we are. We're pretty fancy on offense and talented there. We've got some things we do. We always have, but defense still wins for you and I just don't think we got big enough guys squat down and play defense and Russia passer. And that's what you got to have. Coach, I know you alluded to Lincoln Riley, who so many people loved and were disappointed when he left, more than disappointed. Do you think that was a big factor? The entry to the SEC for him leaving? For him, believe him or his leaving. He's never told me, but I've assumed that is a surprise to everyone, bob stoops told me that Lincoln had told him that he was leaving. I think his agent has been working on this for some time. People got upset with him about how he left. So how do you leave when you quit? You call your team in before you play a game and say hey, guys, I'm witnessing my last game coach you guys. You will say that. You got to go through this as you finish. And I said this, I moved to the money. I offered you got a $10 million contract out there. They gave me the moon to come out there. I bought it my hundred and I forgot. How many square foot house 18,020 1000 ft² house out there in Malibu? Coaches grew from money house football teams. Schools grew from money. That's what we're doing. We're going to SEC for the money Paul. And so what the hell is wrong with football coaches doing the same thing? And yeah, he left and I think that was a factor in it. I don't think anybody asked him his opinion. And he didn't want to play there. He wanted to come the SAC and build that problem back up. And he did it pretty damn good first year to the two 12 to 12 and two. It was pretty damn good. Yeah. Heisman Trophy winner. It was a good start. And really made the playoffs. That Heisman Trophy wanted happened to be at Oklahoma. That's what really upset him. Yeah, I was going to try to avoid saying that, but I'm glad you did. Because Lincoln, Lincoln has a tremendous advantage recruiting quarterbacks. He calls the plays and coaches a quarterbacks on the field, he meets with the quarterbacks. They designed the game plan and the quarterbacks involved in doing that doing what he can do best and gives us the information that is coaches that we already know that. But that's a tremendous advantage for you. You will be able to head coach to recruit quarterbacks and he has that advantage. It's better a little defensive line coach trying to commence. You know, that he has enough of a promise you. Coach Switzer, you mentioned defense at Oklahoma and obviously Dennis is known as one of the gurus in college football, how long does it take to turn something like that around that unit around? Well, you know it takes players. It takes players, takes recruiting and you got to get those guys. And I think they did better recruiting this year and I think they did. And let's do it. We see evidence of that in the year or two. But spent ten years, I know. He was here ten years with bob stoops before he left in that cleansing. But he's a good coach, and excellent coach. But the talent is the edge and I don't think they got an edge right now, but we don't have the talent that other people have that we maybe 6 or 7 teams that are terrible at. And just about the game in general, because I mean, you competed at a time, the era of Paul Bryant, you went right past that into other eras and just your perspective on the game today, what's happening in it and really where it's going from here. Well, in my era, I was head coach in the early 70s. I was playing a black quarterback in 1971. You guys didn't even start recruiting black quarterbacks. I don't know the decades later. So Southwest conference. I had a tremendous advantage back in my era. Black players. I recruited the best players in all positions, venue that and you're going to play it you're the best player.

"If you're not getting turnovers in your their punters both penetrates deep all the time and you have to go seventy eighty ninety yards all the time. That's hard that's hard. You know you have the short field and you know less than fifty yards unless fifty forty thirty twenty yards. Whatever at that makes all the difference in the world and you know like i said calling a game and entire field calling. Ah making every play. Count is very difficult. A lot of lot of moving parts there and everything has to be an sake because most defensive coordinator time they'll say you go the length of the field where to keep everything in front. You're gonna make a mistake. One of these times going likes the field that most defensive coordinator is believed. And i believe it to and especially in college football. It's just hard to do. And so Short field turnovers as huge for coordinator. Kinda openers yourself up allows you to take take a couple of chances to As well you know you kind of get off script a little bit. Go to your exotic script. Go to your take a chance to play and say we got you know ahead right now and our defense play. Well let's take a chance here so it creates a little different thinking process that as opposed to trying to okay. We got an authentically key. Move down the field because our defense is in trouble or not you know they're not getting the turnovers etcetera so does change your thinking So this game coming up on saturday. It's the biggest game it just in terms of ranks since a game you're familiar with The nineteen eighty five game against michigan number one versus number two. This'll be number three versus number four. It's a good time to pick your brain about those things. But i want to ask you about this college game day Decided not to come. Bob stoops is going to be in town. So you know. And he's going to enjoy the heck out of saying go hawks on democrats of for about three hours and reggie bush met liner. Brady quinn app to listen to. Abs serenaded all day. But you think curse kind of happy that the espn Crazy train isn't coming to town. Just because of the distractions that haven't both shows there would have created. He's not a big distraction guy. He's always been that way. I think he's probably deep down. Happy that espn game days. Not there That's a good point time. Just because that's what. Add to monumental distraction for his football team. You know hayden hayden was different. Hayden embraced it. You know he liked. He liked all that stuff. And and you know. He's trying to sell his program at the same time. I mean he's trying to get iowa on the map so hayden had a different. You know different marketing aspect to it than kirk. Does you know. I was already on the map so it's just a different deal. But that's not kirks makeup. Either he likes to lay low and sneak up on you kind of kind of deal. And so yeah i think i think you know i think if you if you cut kirk opened his bobby stan. I'm glad. espn game. Day is not here because it would be mayhem is going to be big week enough..

"Were there for both ed interest to start changing professionalism for whatever you think about the football program at least mike bone. Has you know quite a bit of experience. When it comes to the administrative aspects of the job this will be the toughest test of him being an athletic director. And it'll be interesting to see how that search was but ryan you have so much that's gone on at usc. In the last couple of years we have the operation varsity blues you have a sexual assaults harassment lawsuit against a campus dr. You didn't have fans at the football games. There's a whole lot going on here. It almost felt like they couldn't make a move like this because they didn't want to add to what was already going on. Would that be overstating this. Maybe some degree. Although i do think all of those things play a factor. Obviously and i think you know it's an interesting sign of of where the university is that at that the leadership of the university looks at the pandemic and obvious deficit in financial issues. They come from mats and they say you know we still need to get rid of clay helton whether whether his is over ten million. Whether we're gonna have to pay you know several million more to to buy out to members of his staff or dubai out a new coach a at a certain point the bottom line that's being affected by our football program Is important enough to make that change. But i do think you know with klay. Held made always helped the fact that he was viewed as a man of integrity. He was a consummate gentleman. You never had to worry about just ethical issues at least it at a program level With klay hilton in charge and that was the reason why he was hired in the first place by pat. Haden i you know post steve. Sarkissian pat haden kind of became taken with the fact that this was a man of integrity. Who would be leading us into a new era. We can put this sarkissian era behind us. Obviously a pretty short sighted look at how you hire your football coach in. That certainly played out. But i think that when you look at the fag play hilton gun. Six full seasons as the head coach. I think it helped quite a bit that he was kind of beauty as a man of integrity and people generally liked him including his players who should be the next head coach at usc. You know that that's a tough question. I think they have a really difficult search ahead in the sense that a lot of boosters want a big splash. Hire our own bill. Paschke said in his column yesterday that they need to go out and hire a guy not that needs still needs to prove himself but that has already proven proven himself that already has the equity in recruiting and nationally To sort of instantly. Hit the ground running in usc that national contender. I'm not sure many of those guys are out there. There is a a bob stoops. Maybe chris peterson. I know you know. I'm sure in the coming weeks. Their agents will will leak out. They're not interested The obvious choice. A lot of people have connected. Is luke fickle at cincinnati. Because that's who. Mike bone hired when he was athletic there on that so sure. That's a sure. Thing at luke fickle You know spent basically his entire life in ohio in the midwest I've heard from some people. They're not sure whether he would wanna go to. Usc and be a part of that kind of la cacophony of fans constantly complaining about the program. Now there are a lot of other candidates..

Big pretty big one, Yeah. Eight and 5 10 and one is two and already there right outside the top 25. Nobody's I mean, you're sees not afraid to gamble on somebody with, you know, a sorted past. I mean, they had Sark and had the whole issue is stark there, And I guess his issues were more wallets that you receive, but still personal. Come out sort of drinking and stuff. Yeah, that's different than I think. You know, Like indiscretions that are circumventing rules. You know, it's That's just a human battle that everybody can relate too. Versus. We can't have this representing our university. That's right. The kid will is a tough job. He started making Malik well, it started at Auburn. How big is he? Do you have his height? Yes. Six ft. To 18. He's only six. Ft, huh? Not that it matters. I mean calamari. Look at, um Baker. Look at Russell Wilson. A lot of these kids are small. That's right. Right? Right. Small. How is that a big kid? Right? Interesting. New days at the quarterback. Spot. Heartache are so by the way, did you? Actually I meant that, Did you? Were you in the same room with Zach Wilson or No? Yeah, Stature, wise kid, man, I told you He might be the best looking like young football player ever seen telling that I'm talking about like body hours and 32 minutes in the show to tell you, partner this like you've worked with for nine years structure, Body series shoulder hit like hips got thick, like Zach Wilson, Which that same guy talk about the quarterback of the New York Jets. He's a good look at them and got great hair. He does have great smiles like it smiled is infectious. I said that broadcast is just infectious. He is he just makes you want to like like him his first touchdown. He jumped into the arms of I don't think that was affected at that. Whoever jumped in, Yeah, they've been made in Tucker, but he's uh He's got great energy, but physically throws like you actually thought that he looked physically. He's a stud. Nice. And I loved it when his shirt ripped. Surely they kept it there. Yeah, And it's funny. My mind works to say Wait, his arms were covered. And then he was wearing like one of those tight fits, and then it ripped them. Like, Let me see. He's gonna tricep. So we got to meet that shirt. Little something, everybody all right? He's also a film junkie, man. They tell them they like Mike LaFleur was telling us. He has to tell him to leave the building. I heard that. You told that on Friday night. He was there until midnight. Mike, you got to go home, but we believe that these piercing blue eyes I mean, I'm not trying to date the guy just telling me it's got the point is he looks He looks the part. He looks the part. I love Sam Donaldson. Donald is cool. Yeah, but Sam Donald was so chill California chills different presentation. I agree. I agree. You know, I mean, I don't I don't know. Why was he? Caroline is perfect for Sam Dong. And I think they love him down there. All right, we'll see act. How are you, But what's going on? Okay. You know, said for Clay Helton, a very nice man who came on I on college football. Lot, but I think the time had come so real quick. You heard his throughout a few names. Uh, you did that show for 78 years here on the network every Saturday. Who do you think Who do you think they pursue? What direction could USC go? I'm going to throw it a wildcard Urban Meyer. Well, did you not just listen to the last five minutes of the show? He's got a darlin. He's got to dial into the show. He's got a dollars. I was on another station, so I apologize. So other than that, you know, there's not a guy that there's not. There's not a guy that it has, like ties to the Southern California area. So I think you're going to hear Matt Campbell from Iowa State him as well. Yeah, you know, uh, I think you're going to hear a lot of the same guys. I can't see them going with an assistant. I think it's got to be a proven guy. At this point. They've got to get a known commodity. A brand that is, Yeah, I'm with you on that part for sure. I'm listening. I'm reading this. This is I don't know if this is true or not, But you you as C has already spoken. To Bob Stoops Pops Stoops and is making a hard push. At Urban Meyer. Those are the top two choices. I'm telling you, I would not rule out Urban Meyer. I just wouldn't. I feel like it's going to be a quick experiment in the NFL. Maybe like Calipari with the Nets, although that was three years to be fair. I just I don't think it's going to end well in Jacksonville. I don't wanna lose. He's gonna blow a gasket that would set back the hiring of Older college coaches in the NFL. It will never happen again. I'm never happen again. Interesting, right? You're only get the mic the rules the rules of the of the college world into the NFL. They won't go back to these old coaches could be some collateral damage. If that's the case acts up, they will come back or wrap it up on a busy Monday give you thought on the Ravens and the Raiders tonight. Here's rich. CBS sports.

"I mean, I thought they opened up the office last year as good as they had under Bryan fairest. All right. All of a sudden, you know, they've clamped it down again. And I don't believe in the old adage they're not, you know, they're not showing everything. All that kind of stuff. And you know, we just heard bob stoops, bob stoops taught me that. He would say, hey, chuck. You know, you show everything. We're trying to win score points. Don't worry about holding anything back. You know, history was thought all out there. They have to prepare for all that the next opponent. They don't have enough time in a day to do it. So I don't think the holy back. I hope they're not, but yeah, I'm with you. I just felt like, especially in that situation, hey, run that jets we've done here. Let's ice this game away and but you go for three and how many times when you see that time and your career in football man himself or something and you're like, you had that pit in your stomach, oh, don't settle. You know, this team is not out of it yet. And they're at home and they had a quarterback that they benched. We can talk about that as well. But I thought there was two telling things also to just I want to make this point. Sure. Second quarter, here's I thought the difference in the game or this little things I look for. It was in the second quarter and I was staying at a third down a crucial third down and party brought back through a beautiful pass on like a coronado or sideline rob to Kohler. Yep. And it was a contested ball. Justin Jacobs, right? Two hands on the ball and did not make the catch. That was a huge momentum for Iowa, a momentum breaker fly. And then a little bit after that, I with those, you know, the Charlie Jones for the touchdown and that was a contested throat. It was defensive back all over Charlie Jones, and he makes to play. I thought those two plays right there were big momentum changers for aisle. You know, Iowa just had Nicole. Here's your all American tight end. Now.

"Find out lot about you quarterback spring football so they had to find out in a limited time and fall practice what he could do and that was really stressful for nali patriots but also for the coaching staff. Out what he can do because usually when you get into fall after this spring you. Have you have a good idea but you still need that fall to to do a lot of rinse and repeat rinse and repeat how much coordination is going on With the defensive side of the ball where you wanna see some different looks from defense during fall camp. And how much are you know like you would be talking to You know Bob stoops or somebody and tell them. Hey i wanna see some blitz packages out. 'cause i think we're going to see these things from these people during the year A great question. The two philosophies when i was with hayden fry. Hey didn't want the defense to get tricky. He wanted his quarterbacks to feel ill big time very confident so always ones against the threes in the first off as just the third team defense and vice versa first team defense versus the third team office he just hayden was always wanting to build confidence in his player so now sometimes that was by backfire. Little bit tom because we get into the game. All said hey. Those guys are playing like thirteen hours. You know those guys are lots astor but He always liked those preseason games. Those non conference games early to warm up to that. But that was just flossy. He wanted his quarterbacks to feel like they were ju- confident they you know and he built that confidence up. That way now fast forward. I'm coaching for bob. Stoops and oklahoma. It was never that way. it was one versus ones. And you could do anything you want. There was never a time where we could tell. He's in a defensive guy. We couldn't tell the defensive guy Defecit coach what to do. He just said. Charlie you just get out there and play ball and you script how you wanna script. And we're going to butch every which way now the beauty of that is by mike. Stoops's guys a.

"Coach. Gary patterson said that morris who transferred to the frogs and january hasn't been officially released and so his eligibility is in question and patterson said quote. We don't know yet on chandler. It looks like the rules are going to change here but quickly. But he hasn't been released by oklahoma so ask for a response. Lincoln riley defended his position taking the same route as coaches have before him. It's allowed within conference rules and a core program philosophy to preserve the integrity of the game. Riley said this particular situation for us is about something that we believe in myself the leadership here at ou we think it's unhealthy for college football to encourage intra conference transfers. That doesn't mean we are against transfers to any other institutions. They want that real obviously has been changed and i think it was a good rule to change and now players have the ability and freedom as they should be able to go to any school that want but i do think the interconference can complicate things coaches understand the big picture and that's going to bring along a lot of negatives that we don't want in this game that's been something that we've been adamantly opposed to for a long time. Now listen critics of college. Football's power imbalance will point to a lot of examples. That could make them look like a hypocrite. Most notably would be benefiting from bob stoops enlisting the services of baker mayfield from texas tech when riley was the oc and the old they say devils in the details as mayfield was neither a scholarship athlete at the time nor eligible when he transferred in two thousand fourteen but he retroactively gained a year of eligibility later in his career riley did of course bring along cuyler murray from texas and but murray had to sit out a season and riley was pretty defiant about austin. Kendall's immediate eligibility when he transferred to west virginia a couple of years ago. Although you could see that oklahoma kind of have a pr nightmare of the you know knocking at the door and granting kendall a graduate transfer his wish i mean he shouldn't have to sit out anyway. But the morris situation. You can't compare it to baker mayfield murray or kendall but it's just general example of a coach that can do something according to the bylaws doesn't mean that he has to you know morris completed three passes for thirty nine yards. And you could say spencer rattler which is one of the great names football. He should have gone to oklahoma. Am the rattlers but spencer rattler is going to be starter and also at tcu. They have max dugan as the quarterback not a movie. Max dugan is not losing his job. And patterson evans said that he said he's our guy right now instead of popular believe. Everybody told me that trayvon boykin was wasn't very good. That's what i heard all the time. That was a sophomore year. We're pretty excited. I think he's squad at six hundred thirty pounds today for quarterback. That's not bad. We've got a chance so the whole thing about transfer. When i was in college you just knew to sit out a full year. And riley is within his right to make sure that morris. It's out an entire year. And i'm not saying that i'm not taking sides because i understand lincoln riley doing all this time all this recruiting. And the guy's like yeah. I wanna go to your rival school. And i won't be able to play immediately and he can say look. I don't make the rules i'm just. I'm just enforcing rules. So i don't. This is the first time ever. Though lincoln riley has had any type of you want to call it bad publicity looking little miserly there my dad when he was at santa clara one of his roommates in the dorms was a quarterback at a youngstown ohio who went to santa clara scholarship and then he said he found out he never played he found out. He said He never wanted me to play. He just didn't want me to go to a rival school and beat him is cold blended well whenever you take the scholarship. There's no guarantee you're gonna play. That's.

"And he loved the fact that he got a chance to Going to get that program going again in Oklahoma because we were coming out of the nineties. And you know football wasn't doing that. Well, first hearing fine, they they lead in every game they lost. And so they thought they had something. Jerry flip, their legendary strength and conditioning coach under Bob Put the guys who one of the toughest summers they've ever done through. Then that got that group came back to recruiting classes then and they came back and they want the national title. And that's the last night national title. Ou has Bob lost three other times trying to win it. He did say that if you could do it again, he would lose the first one. Didn't win the second or third one and he said, because the expectations got so high after winning the first when they were hard to match hosted Total sports on K Ras in Norman, Oklahoma. You can also subscribe to Patriot on James is gonna tell you a little bit more about that. But I have to wonder, too. In your conversation on Wednesday on your program, Did he talk about just how satisfying it is for him? His wife, Carol, to watch their son playing for Oklahoma. Yeah, They're having a blast that they really are because they just be parents. And even though they know the game, and Carol knows the game, too. She's been around Bob for a long time when you when they do show them. Carol's acting like a mom, that's excited. You know, for her son, Bob. You know, kind of smiling, but not just kind of sitting there, you know, because he's probably and I doubt that he bust their chops. He said. Well, he didn't run the route writing short, you know, but anyway, night a great catch. Okay, we're fine. So anyway, so Um, you know, it s so I think they're enjoying the heck out of that. That's why I don't think Bob will take any kind of job that's going to tie him up. During football season for the next two or three years because Drake still going to be on the squad. And the family wants to see every game that he plays. There's a lot of talk that he'll get back into coaching or urban Meyer takes the job with Jacksonville. Maybe he would go on. You know that Fox program or whatever. And, um you know, I don't think you'll do anything like that. You know, Money's not the issue with the family so and he makes enough and endorsements and business things that deep that worried about it. Carol Still, you know, making money from Mary Kane. So you know, and I just think that they'll enjoy Drake and enjoy being back. You know, you being in the suite, he still goes to practice once or twice a week and It's the hangout, and I think that's that's status. Satisfactory to him right now. Well, I was going to ask you me. What is Bob Stoops involvement with the program? Well, he's still the still in administrative assistant or confident of the president. And so when bomb retired into 16 David born put him in this role. You know, it probably makes 300,000 or something Which is not some change it all you know, And he said Copper daughter, you know, help assist the president certain things, which means they can inviting to fundraisers and things like that. You know, And he's still doing that for the new president Jo Hey, Ross is off to a great started OU. Of course, he's trying to work through a pandemic and It's not eating for easy for any college across the country, but he's doing he's doing his job does anybody else is doing you know what? You know what he can? Um you know, so that's in that Because of that. I don't know if you're aware Before the Baylor Game Cove. It kind of hit the team pretty hard. And contact tracing did in five coaches were put into contact tracing. So they didn't have enough coaches to practice even bringing down graduates. Whatever. So Lincoln calls Bob and said, Hey, what are you doing? I'm gonna go play golf. He goes. Why did you come down and coach And you know, Bob, does you want to do what he goes? I'm short five coaches coming coach on the defensive side. It just What you're saying because I'll be there in 10 minutes. You know, Bob just couldn't wait any coach for three days and we were hoping that he would get a chance to coach in the game. But the coaches came back, and Bob said that was better. Anyway. They knew a lot more about the game plans, and he didn't said Hey, we're wrapping up our time Hosted total sports. Carry after radio. That is James hell seriously, we only have about 60 seconds. Give me a quick hit on as far as the rumors that have been out there as far as Lincoln Riley in the interest by the Philadelphia Eagles tour falls. It's false, You know, he's never told you never indicated to me or told me that he has an interest in the NFL, baby. He will it some point, but I don't think he will. Right now. He's got a great team coming back for next year, even though they've lost Other team guys either through transfer or the pros. They still have the foundation of their starting unit coming back. Not only that, I don't think he is. I don't think his dream has been in the NFL. I think it's been college and right now he's one of the greatest jobs that he could be out of the University of Oklahoma. Now they're going to keep calling him if he keeps having success in his offense continues to do what it does. I think right now He's really happy, though you and I don't see him taking.

"But first big news coming out of Norman, Oklahoma this week as Bob Stoops has been named to the College Football Hall of Fame class for 2021. He is the winningest coach, You know your history and we wanted to celebrate his incredible legacy. And so delighted to have with us this morning coming to you from Norman. And that's our good friend James Hale from 1400 K A R E F L O. J. Listen, How you doing? The only problem with having you on radio television and that nobody gets to see your pretty face. But, man, I'm doing great and The center basketball teams in still use you. So get back in shape. Must throw some elbows and get going. Okay. Well, hey, let's let the celebration continue. As far as when we talk about the former legendary coach in Oklahoma, Bob Stoops being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He is a winner and established himself as one of the best ever to have coach the game. I mean, what made him so good as a head coach? You spent a lot of time around him, James I think his ability to hire great coaches. First of all his first staff was amazing. You know, we brought in. You know the three guys that he coast with the Kansas State One was his brother. The other. Brent Venables is considered a brother in the family and mark Man Gino, who is a great friend of Bob's. And they all left Bill Snyder's staff and that started really the downward trend for Kansas State at that time, even though they were good the next couple of years, you know, but you know, Oklahoma got three tremendous coaching talents. Bobby Jack Wright came in him coached at the University of Texas for a long time. Hey, was moved out of coaching into an administrative position for a year with Bob called him. That was an incredible higher because it opened up the state of Texas Bob Bobby Jack knows every coach. High school coach in the state of Texas has a legendary recruiter. That was great higher. Go out and get that done. Then he brought back Jackie ship. That was incredible. Linebacker it ou Under very Switzer and played six or seven years in the National Football League and brought him back along with tail getting who was one of the best quarterbacks ever to play it. Ou Hey, was the quarterback that really transitioned OU from the wishbone to a passing offense? In the mid nineties and you know, so those two guys were coming back a star former stars and then you get Jonathan Haze who played what 12 years 13 years in the National Football League is the tight end. Bob told me he actually when he called him. He was breaking a horse and Oklahoma City, which was because he never thought he'd hunt John has to do with that. But you know, Jonathan was ready to come into coaching. And now Jonathan's been in Coaching, scouting and things since then, then Chuck Long, who was a great quarterback at Iowa, when Bob was there, you know came in and coach quarterback. So you so it was Steve Spurrier. Jr. Who has had a long career now is an assistant coach, the son of Steve Spurrier, But my staff was so good that it got Oklahoma often rolling, and they had a recruiting class the first class. It wasn't that highly rated. Guys turned out to be stars like Derrick Strait and under a wool folk and you know, and towards marshal and people like that. It turned out to be stars and, of course, iconic and no use history, So I think that's one of Bob's greater strength. Obviously he wasn't hey, didn't fear making changes. You know some of the toughest moves he had to make was firing Josh Haibal, who was his first quarterback that actually won a national championship point. Jamie and Orval is now their coaches, the Nevada but he thought he needed a different direction offensively, and that's what he brought in Lincoln, Riley and you see how well that is Work, and Oklahoma had good offenses under Josh and J. But you know how Offenses and defense is really go. If you have an off year everybody wants to do guy. You know, Bob thought that the offense have gotten stale. I needed a new direction, so he wasn't afraid he brought in Mike Leach and that first staff And I failed to mention Mike Mike brought the air raid. So Oklahoma went from being the greatest resting offense in the history of college football with the wishbone to trying to throw a ball, the kale and now you bring in Mike Leach, you bring the air raid. He is the winningest coach in Oklahoma History secured 10 Big 12 conference titles. The 2000 National championship during his 18 years. Have you had a chance to catch up with him? I know you've got a super popular program there, Norman. I mean, what did he share? And just overall, I mean, how would you define his legacy? Well, you know, he came over show Wednesday and he's always been really kind of this reporter and he's living a great life Retired. He's much more open to talk about things. You know, he's Is part owner of a company called Rock and Roll Tequila, and Bob actually would bring his brought the new product various, you know, established, it's all across the state, and every time he comes in, people are lined up to get their picture taken with him. They promote it, and it's been a cool thing. He was in the XFL, and I think he had a good time. In other words, he's enjoying life. But we're actually finding out a lot more about Bob. Now. I had seen that popular. That kind of personality at times because I was close enough that I was at events with them or something with a We could let us hear loud and he would trust me enough that I wouldn't say anything to anybody. And he was always been a great guy, but I think the one thing that I got out of his interview was just how much he loved being around people. And how that he was so happy. A lot of his coaches have gone around the bigger and better things that a lot of his players had great accomplishments and are doing good in life, and he's rooting for all those that aren't you know that are struggling someone he's trying to help him. The best that he can And I admitted that you know, you have punted his coverage when he married his wife, Carol, who was, of course a Mary Kate star. Let me tell you a little story. If you don't mind. Please do go for it. What? Big 12 media days. And this is about what? It was at the Opry in Dallas. Beautiful Hotel, which you know Um you know it Z kind assistance, probably six or seven years ago. Anyway, you know, they only had books not only the big 12 media gathering, which is gonna have over, you know 1000 people or whoever's coming in, but they had broke the Mary Kay convention that year, which Right in, you know, you know, at least 1000 beautiful women is well, yeah, you know, but they were coming up to us. Going? Hey, Have you seen Carol Stoops? I incorrectly said you mean Bob Stoops. They go? No hell, stupid. Carol Stoops is a lot bigger than but are you kidding me? We want to see Carol Studio. Where is she? Well, I had the same carol there yet, you know? Well, you know, I don't know. Then I was told they had this convention it seized the key speaker at this convention. That Bob Baby was going to drop by, you know. So Carol was a starter. All right, a million dollar earner and Mary Kay and you know so They did a lot of things, right, you know, And I think Bob appreciates the God gave him the ability to do certain things right?.

We were playing good ball, just not great ball and had some No chances to separate against a good team on the road, which you know when you're a great team. You take advantage of those and we were not quite area and came down the back and forth game. You know, a couple places we didn't make. You know some of the key plays.
