Inevitably though, mistakes are made, and when that happens, one industry's trash becomes another industry's jewelry marketplace of supremacy has that story. At a mobile phone industry conference in Barcelona back in 2013, a representative of a New Hampshire based company called GT advanced technologies is giving a demonstration to a reporter. He picks up a chunk of concrete and scrapes it ferociously across the screen of his iPhone. And I'm going to start to scratch away, right? And when I clear that away, you'll see that there's no damage to the screen itself. GT 80 had agreed to make sapphires for Apple, which was considering replacing the gorilla glass on its screens with the much harder material. Bob Sanders is a reporter at the New Hampshire business review who covered GTAT for more than a decade. They need to produce really big ones, bigger than they ever done before at higher temperatures than ever before. We had to take it apart with a concrete saw and with sledgehammers to get out the few clean areas. But once it's trimmed up, it cuts absolutely beautiful stones. They glitter and shine and challenge themselves them on Etsy and Instagram now. Our business is centered around repurposing industrial materials, which are grown for science, medicine, and research, and we're using them as gemstones. They range from a few dollars to a few $1000 for a single stone. In his workshop, chaloner holds a pink ruby, larger than a golf ball, and slices through it with a diamond saw. The stones he cuts were originally intended for lasers, medical imaging machines, cell phones, even fusion reactors. This ruby was left over from the 1980s strategic defense initiative, also known as Star Wars. Sourcing this stuff is basically a full-time job. We have to do a lot of cold calls, send a lot of emails and find crystal growers or crystal processors or researchers who are willing to part with their scrap. They are not always willing. Sometimes scrap is re melted and recycled. Sometimes the crystal's composition is top secret. Some of the scientific crystals channel are manages to get his hands on, contain rare earth elements. Some of them change color. Some of them actually glow in the dark. I think my favorite is, lutetium aluminum garnet. It is used to detect invisible radiation. And it has an insane neon green color. It glows like nobody's business. One of those rough stones went to Eric bardawil owner of House of Silas to facet into a gem. So he sent it to me. I opened the box. It's just glowing. I texted him. What is this stuff is it safe? Are you going to kill me if I cut it? Marty will cut it, posted the video on TikTok. It got 1.2 million views. People went crazy. And then for the next month, I think all I did was sell Luang gemstones. They go for a few hundred to more than a thousand bucks. Bartolo thinks the popularity of these industrial stones is in part because of a shift in the diamond market. People are warming up to lab grown diamonds for wedding rings, and that spilled over into acceptance for synthetic colored stones, especially if they have a good backstory, like failed industrial products or fusion generator parts. It's so hard to play zone coverage. That's what I would want to do is play zone so I got all my 7 defenders in the back with their eyes on him and they can see him and rally to him when he runs. But these RPOs that people are running, they fake it in there, they get their linebackers to play run and then there's holes in the zones to throw those quick passes. And everybody is taking advantage of that. So now you have to almost play man to man and that's tough. That's what the problem was with the Raiders the last couple of years, guys was you had a defensive coordinator that wasn't very creative or motivating and not only that, but he's playing a lot of guys on a position. Jonathan Abram has benefited from moving up and doing that. And so you see that this defense man, you talk about confidence, Brian. You mentioned it with the offense on defense. This this this defense just have that you can see it already and listen, Let's face it. The Raiders are not going undefeated guys. Okay? How can you go in defeated there will have their ups and downs. But I'm telling you, the down should be a lot less significant. They shouldn't last multiple games like they did last year in that suite at the end of the season. You just like the makeup of this. You'd like the coaching staff. The mood that's been sent the culture that's been sent and you're seeing it with guys like Pyramid, Abram and then, of course, Mullen, who continues to perform at a very high level, and I think if you ask the coaching staff and you ask the fans and you said, you look at these first two games if you're able to go one and one, you'd be ecstatic with that, or at least very content or happy with that. The fact that they're going away in these first two Seems to and also I think it is incredible. It's what a start. And again, it's only two games into the season. We got a long way to go, but I think early on in this season, we have seen what this team is made of and what they're capable of. So now let's look ahead to next week. They have injuries. Now they come into Las Vegas. Now they're playing a Raider team with a ton of confidence to know is day to day, But he may play for the Raiders. This is a game where the Raiders need to take advantage of the Dolphins team that is that is really sucking in all categories right now. I mean, I mean, listen, Ben Roethlisberger is not as mobile as he once was, and he was uncomfortable the entire game. I thought the coaching staff listen Week one against Baltimore. Young couple early twenties. They're traveling throughout the country. They're pulled over in Utah for a domestic violence issue, even though nobody was arrested. Well to me. This is Scott Peterson all over again because all of a sudden the boyfriend comes home. Without his girlfriend. Gabby. He refuses to cooperate with the media. Or I shouldn't say the media. Excuse me. He refuses to cooperate with law enforcement. That is your number one sign that he's responsible for why she's missing. Very weird and bizarre story and we were hoping that she would be found, but it appears as though They have found her body. Yesterday There was a press conference. Even though it hasn't been 100% confirmed. They're saying that it matches her description. It's her, uh, immediately. I said this boyfriend is responsible. Either complete murder. Or there was some sort of accident. He tried to cover it up. Well, now Authorities are saying that he's missing so that means one or two different things happened. Either. He has taken his own life or he's decided to go in hiding. What despicable situation here you have a family of the Gabby Petito family. That is begging for answers. And now they get this heart wrenching information yesterday. The boyfriend's family refuses to talk to anybody refuses to give up any information. He has refused to give up any information, and now he's missing. And to me. This is like Scott Peterson all over again, even though you know she's not pregnant, at least as far as we know. That's what we're looking at here now. Gabby's family first reported her missing on September 11th. So we're talking. You know what's the date today? We're talking a week ago. They didn't hear from her since late August. And they believe that the text messages That she was given to the family. Where the boyfriend sending those text messages. In fact, up until this past Friday. The family were refused to speak as I mentioned with investigators, which is unbelievable, despicable. While I don't blame the boyfriend's family for what took place I do blame them for not being transparent. There's a time and a place where you have to say to yourself. Pete's missed some first rounders several. You could've worked in college but you always felt like a pro coach control. Wasn't that valuable to you. Go back to your career. How because i see a lot of these coaches now. All college coaches want control but some of these. Nfl guys. they want more say in personnel. Heck aaron rodgers now says he wants saying personnel i. I'm not a fan of that. What you tell me did it matter to you. How did you in polian make it work. People asked that question all the time especially lately you know who had control of the draft the final say who had the final say on the fifty three. I honestly don't know colin. I'm sure built. Did but you know. We would have discussed and i knew bill was not going to draw the player that i didn't want i was not gonna keep a gallon team that building what we had a great capacity to listen to each other buildings out and work together. And that's what you have. And it was a partnership. And and i don't understand this You know i've got to be ride has got to be my way. I've gotta have control. when started. Don't draft the pair player. That's not motivated. That's not what tony's good at. He's gonna coach him. He's going to work. He's gonna help them. But certain types of guys are gonna flourish here. Certain types of guys aren't and once we understood that we were in great shape. Did you ever have a player that you looked at and you went to bill or mccain said i this this this is gonna work for me and maybe there was pushback but you knew innately tony. This kid works for me that that is exactly what i want. Yeah and we got to know that we had what we call the buck filter. When i was at a tampa we did the same thing. What does it look like. And so bill. Poland got to know that very well and so the guys who might have been off other people's right are bob. Sanders is small. he's undersized but man he is up fiery guy he's attitude guy and you know and some schools would be that way. We had a lot of success with the iowa guys because we knew they were coached to certain way they were ready to go. We knew we're gonna get. And i i think that's really important. Who's gonna flourish in your system. So it must. You must look at the green bay situation. I know i do. And i just can't figure it out i i'll tell you say tony i wouldn't want control over personnel at fox it's i i can barely figure out how to host a show. Podcast i don't want it when you look at the green bay situation. Do you just roll your eyes at i do and you know as great as peyton manning was and is but they want to be involved in things. He understood that his focus was not the same as the the organization's focus. I was the same way as the head coach. My focus was on winning this year. Bill cullen had to focus on three four and five years down the line. So i had to defer to him. I couldn't say hey. We've got to make this decision. And it's gotta be this way i'll give you a classic example are super bowl year the year before we came. Close don't win it edrich. james's up. He's a free agent and bill. Pollen comes to me and says ed gonna get six or seven million dollars on the open market now. We could pay him and he deserves it but if we signed him i can tell you right now tony. They have no off season if you're on a phone constantly As somebody who deeply loves the game or you ever concerned the coaching is less healthy than ever. I absolutely am and i know i was very very blessed to work for chuck. No and not get put in that situation. When i was a young coach and see a coach who was successful and didn't make it his whole life i worked for denny grain for four years then it was the same way so i saw you could do it that way. I tried to do it. That way and demonstrate to my coaches and players that we can win we can be successful and we can still have family light. We can have social life. We can As as chuck would say we can find purpose somewhere else and so. I'm really grateful to see mike tomlin. Go on and do it that way herm edwards and lovey smith and a bunch of guys who were with makes but i see the other side of it too and i see the people that feel like men. I've got to win. I've got to be here. I'm going to pour everything. I've got into this because i owe it to my organization my staff and you're right. I don't think that's helpful Andy reid. I always had this theory. Is that bella. Check dominates coaches. That have a certain system what he struggles with is quarterbacks that can move he struggled when he played cam and he struggles with coaches who don't have a system there play designers so andy reid his given ballot check problems. He doesn't have a system. He gets his players. He designs plays for his players. That bill is very good at film. Study this is what you do. I'm taking it away from you. Bella check is largely viewed as the best football coach of our lives. And you and bill had some real struggles was there. Were there things that bill did. The you felt you had success with. They went and try to make this adjustment. This is the second time uh, first, McCarthy felt like he had a team that was ready. He had to make a switch on the quarter. Nate aside. In Green Bay. You know, with the head coach Bob Sanders. He felt like the team was ready to make a switch Defectively. So he went, um and got Dom Capers and that actually elevate the defense, you know, don being with the Steelers, bringing that blitz Berg style. They actually cater Charles Woodson style of play, and now he went and made a switch and got coach Dan Quinn. Was trying to bring that Seattle cover three type defense, which is funny because McCarthy said he wasn't at the end of that defensive force. So that's why he went with coach Nolan, who also I notice his best friend as well. Stop. I'm ready to see what Dan Quinn does defensively. Getting Michael Parsons was huge. I think he's going to have an outstanding year. So, Yeah, I'm I'm curious to see what they do overall and right and they put these things together and health is going to be a huge contributor, contributing factor to what they can do as a team. Okay, So then let's see what the NFC East I want to stay there. This has been a division that has been. I mean, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it bad the last two years, right? Is this finally the year they get over the hump, But it's no longer the NFC least. But maybe it turns into like an NFC beast or something where it's not not really a joke anymore in the NFL. Yeah. No pastor, if anything like that, But the guy that you again had foot surgery three weeks ago, I didn't see any sort of hesitancy. Wow. Oh, boy. Atmosphere toughed it out. He was pretty aggressive in all of lateral movement. How invasive was that surgery? I mean, I mean, today I have to put them under or was this like? The local sort of thing. It was it was it sort of a big deal. Yeah, So it was local. The doctor David Porter. They actually get the Clinton Elson surgery very next day, And he's a guy that Tony Dungy tells the story about how when Bob Sanders came out of the draft, a lot of teams red flag Bob Sanders didn't think that he would stay healthy in this foot issue, and David Porter's I Trust me. I'll do the surgery. You're going to get him back to full health. Obviously, Bob didn't said career, but you would have taken the Bob Sanders that off the full 20 Super Bowl and become NFL defensive player of the year. So, um, yeah, right here in your own backyard. Like the offensive lineman? Was he? I mean, is he back in full form, or I mean, what was he participating in? Yeah. Not full yet for him or Nelson, yet an elbow issue early in camp, so And again going to even those guys back into it. But I mean, the fact that both of them and I throw one set of this category if you're practicing three weeks outside of the regular season opener. Yeah, I mean, that that leaves you at least a half 1008 practices pretty intense practices. Need to kind of ramp it up and be ready to go week one and we talked about the schedule. It's one of the most difficult starting stretches to the season you'll ever see and I don't care what team and it's one of the public. Five game stretch is medical history. Jacob Easton has played more than Ellinger and have not thrown an interception. So I think you got a factor that in as well as why I would go with East and over a longer Is there a K B? Is there a general consensus amongst among the players about the you know you have a short preseason in a longer regular season? Now, um like or dislike? Do you get a feeling or at some sort of consensus? Either way on that. I think I want to see their paychecks. It'll be like, um, but You know, it's In an ideal world that probably a 22 preseason games, and they've been 18 regular season game. Now, that might be a little bit too much. Four players, but we don't have money talk. And especially for those back in the roster, guys when you might only get one contract, you know you're getting paid a little bit more on that. You're gonna be all all over it, So I'm sure some players are thinking themselves four. That's a lot of football. If you go to 18 games, you guys only played 17 games. "I think there's you know what happens to you. Know one coaching position. In how much they learn that. That -sition is one thing but when they do go out there on special teams and make things happen. You know i could remember it was. Sean constantly made a lot of place blocks. You know punts for touchdowns for a couple of times. He's doing that. Bob sanders making a big hit against michigan state and obviously you know where his career went. There's there's opportunities there and in special teams as part of the football games and when you know you can go out there. And i think they get more comfortable when they've been out there playing on those things and maybe not be responsible for exactly what we do on defense but out there and make a play on special teams gives them a little bit of confidence like hey i can go out and tackle these guys that are carrying the ball or you know trying to defend something. I think that that's what gives them a little bit more of a more confidence and then helps me out a little bit to say. Yeah i can watch out there and actually competing does. The big thing is about competing. Are you competing not compete competing and you know. Some guys wilder their plan. But they're not really playing at the highest level that they can play as coaches. We wanna make sure that they can play at their highest level. And are they doing and you can see that sometimes special teams. Hey this guy's really really good job and you can see that with terry. That's it was obvious if you look this watching say god. That was an impact on special things studying the game. And that's or refer defensive you've dunk size that over the years. I mean, they're going to be there. They have everything going for them. The Jets is a great job because you have all kinds of money to spend. You have the number two overall pick in the draft. It's not quite as good as the Jaguars, but it's still a really, really good opening. And now for the charges, of course that comes with an offense. It's ready to go. It's like here, just here's the keys. What is this is a great sports car. Just take it around and, you know, do your own thing and drive it. The charges is a great job because it comes Ready to go. And and we told you that it's gotta move. It's it's got to get bigger and someone's got to do something. Because you're if you wanna wait and say, Well, there's these eight guys. We like. Well, guess what? You're gonna lose out in the top three or four of them. You know if there's four or five good offensive coordinators you want to talk about. We gotta talk to Joe Brady. We're gonna talk about You talk to too many guys, You're gonna lose those first couple of guys right? So Urban Meyer to the Jaguars Robert Saleh, who was the number 11 a guy at worst. This coaching cycle, Right salad Arthur Smith with the two guys Everybody wanted. Sal is gone. If Arthur Smith is still unhygienic 24 hours, I will be stunned My Carmen because now the coaching carousel just started moving like that, and decisions are going to be made fast need to be made quickly and decisively. He's already had a couple of interviews. You're gonna have to say all right, it's not Perfect situation right now. We kind of have to go with our gut or we're gonna be stuck Making the best out of here is maybe a choice Number five and six we had for our head coach. We gotta hire one of these guys. The Jaguars were decisive. The Jets were decisive right after we mentioned it last night, and now you're going to see other teams have to do it that way, Because the best teams the best decisions were made by the two teams with the best openings. You have the Jaguars you had the Jets. Now they both got their guys. Yeah, Those were the three teams, including the Chargers, where everything was set up. You know, the only thing getting concerned me in Jacksonville in and I'll mention it again was that report that talked about shot con picking the regional being hands on with the roster? How the hell is that any different than Jerry Jones? Except for the color of the logo side of that wall? It's right. I mean, it's it becomes the same thing. And I don't get the benefit of playing in Dallas or coaching in Dallas. And all of those things s O. That was the only part of it that that struck me. But If you want to go and hand over a big check. That means you're also probably going to be willing to give up some of that power. And so now the wheel starts to spin a little faster. Now the one guy in all of this process that you wonder what it becomes for him. Is Eric the enemy because he can't interview anymore. Uh, right. So if you were undecided in your left and said, Hey, we'll talk again. Well, that doesn't happen unless the Browns beat him. Maybe they do or they go on and well, they play the following week or win the Super Bowl and lose the Super Bowl. Whatever, but you don't want to wait that long, right? That's another 34 weeks. In your off season to start putting plans in place. Sure, you can't have everybody in the building right now. But the idea that you can at least start the process of reviewing college tape and potential free agents and start working and finessing Your salary cap restrictions because a couple of these places it's not pretty. Right. That's the other part of trying to hire. Wait. I only have have restrictions here here here like trying to sell the Houston job. Especially, Shawn Watson doesn't want to be that stuff, right? I mean, we have no money. We're locked into JJ Watt, who is good. Couple plays the game where you re V makes an impact. I'm not saying he's done, but for what he's getting paid per year relative to your salary cap and again, it's not my money, but it does affect how you get to spend elsewhere. It becomes ah, pretty big deal and the guy that gets hired, you know, first order of business. Is it all right? If we figured out whether to Shawn wants a beer or not, So take that out of the mix. I've said all along the turnkey. Operation, and all of this was the Chargers when they went seven and nine, but for a couple of decisions down the stretch in a number of games, there's a playoff team. Right. You've got tell. And you're missing a couple of key components. You know to injury. Not that everybody wasn't affected. But you know, you gotta figure out how to make Derwin James. Not the next Bob Sanders. Look it up people. That's football knowledge, right? Get you, Bob Sanders, you know, go hard guys, but also just a guy who was fantastic when he was available to the Colts during those years. But for the Jaguars, I mean, you get to go in with all those draft picks and and a giant pile of money. And the cachet of state. Look, I win everywhere. Just follow me. Come with me. And then with Robert Saleh, I mean, you know, you got the clips from Richard Sherman and all these other guys and they're walking testimonials of what he is in terms of being a lever and for the Jets again, as long as ownerships gets the hell out of the way, Douglas and he could be quite formidable there..
