"J. R. if you've been following the local sports news you've been hearing some rumblings about maybe the lions are considering trading Matthew Stafford now the lions have vehemently denied it whenever it's come to the fore but it's been reported on local television Bernie smile of its had this to say about it well last night we reported that according to sources the lines have engaged in trade talks with quarterback Matthew Stafford this morning janitor Bob Quinn denied the story we expected that the biggest reason we find validity in the story is Stafford's wife Kelly's posting on Instagram we've got high of Stafford and before our report she had posted at Detroit is done with them she like to go to the LA Chargers now they need a quarterback because Philip rivers laugh the facts you posted that before our report tells us something was going on behind the scenes in our sources confirmed it again we are only reporting that they are in trade talks for Matthew Stafford not that he is being traded Dave our cat who covers the lines for the free press is online with us right now I Dave the Mets are you any truth to any of this not that I've been able to discern I mean I you know I I reached out to Bob Quinn very early Thursday morning he denied it emphatically you know went on the record which she doesn't usually do so you know that told me a lot in look I think from a I don't know what trade talks means right of genes called alliance and ask about Matthew Stafford it's certainly possible I don't I don't know that they would have gone anywhere tonight I don't think from alliance standpoint that makes any sense whatsoever there whatsoever either from a football perspective or a financial perspective they need to win now it costs more money more cap space for them to get rid of him than it does to keep him you know they there's no guarantee that they would get to or whoever they might have their their eyes on at number three in the draft so I just I don't think anything is gonna happen with Matthew Stafford this year to do and then when you talk about the cap hit without getting too complicated for for me or anybody else who's listened to was he is technically accounts about twenty one million dollars or thereabouts on his salary cap number this year if he plays but for some weird reason if they took him off the roster he would count like thirty two million dollars against the cap is that right yes so essentially just in very general terms signing bonuses the the cost against the cap is pro rated over the life of the contract the lions late in December when Matthew Stafford use you know season was already over if they get a simple restructuring his contract which meant they move more cap room into I think they converted a roster bonus into a signing bonus which took up more cap group should they decide to get rid of home so had they had any inclination to trade Matthew that's not something they would have done in December now it would cost and thirty two million to get rid of all its might actually raise him right I mean that's not cutting him that's trading him that's trading in right any any move before June first conspiracy brown here they just about to do the hook my because if I'm even crazy on this they want people to think they're taking a quarterback for the number three pick so that teams will trade a with a more available so chase young will fall two is even limited that this is all a plan between a wife Matthew and the team is going the way they want it well I totally believe that that the takes young would be the apple there I he's the the best bet is missiles in there I just don't know how been potentially you know talking about trading Matthew Stafford would make that happen I mean first of all any NFL team that's gonna choir quarterback is going to do it at the start of the Aussie you don't trade Matthew Stafford your TV don't go acquire Matthew Stafford in June so this move is made well in advance of the draft if you know if if he feels like it needs to jump the lines to get to a yeah they can do that for you don't forget in April right when the draft comes at that that move is not necessarily going to happen right now we are it's definitely not gonna happen before it deal for Matthew staffers mate so look for the lines to deal Stafford they would have to move up to number two a ticket to our whoever you know you're not you're not getting Tom Brady to come here and you'd rather have Matthew Stafford and Philip rivers or whoever else maybe on the open market so I one hundred percent agree can that maybe there's smoke that the lines to convince a team to trade up to two because they want chase young I just fail to see how this would help them accomplish that they're there this is all comes down to basically the lines getting screwed once again by winning one game more than they should have or the tying the game and if they were four and twelve last year they would have gotten the number two pick and but there are three three twelve and three whatever they are one one and and this year it's the number three pick in there once a lot out there not asking to be number one I just want to be number two and they can't get the number two in this is all **** them up because they're what because they had a tight at a stupid game with Arizona could just lose it right I mean honestly of the and and the truth of the matter is it still might work out for them because in in fact getting chase necessarily but they still may be able to trade down two spots with Miami get a really nice draft all which after getting chase down I think that's the next best case scenario for the line well the thing about trading Matthew Stafford you know it's it's just everybody jumps on those band wagons people are forgetting he was playing the best football of his career until we got hurt last year and the lines went all one eight without him so if you want to know how big the girl he was to their to their winning I mean it was like they were eight no without with him playing but they lost every game once he once he stopped playing and to you know I I is that that the conspiracy theories to me Kenny aren't you and and your crazy ideas about trade there somehow about that this this back injury was way worse than anybody thinks why can't people just accept that he had a back injury that is healed you know everybody just assumes that have been that they're willing to take a chance on a Bo Jackson two who has not thrown a past walk well yes he would set up in a chair in a stretcher you know let's draft this guy for the future he literally could be done playing football I'm a modem being an online missed about this but if he really has the same injury the Bo Jackson did he may never be the same player again and everybody was the let's just go with him to put him on the team and and honestly Dave given alliance checkered history I would almost see that as as a screwed up scenario for them if not for the fact that they have two guys Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia who have to do something this year or they're not going to have their jobs and the last thing that you want to do is draft a quarterback who is not a hundred percent is a rookie I don't care how good a rookie is even even even a Lamar Jackson didn't have a great rookie year you know and look how good he ultimately got unless they convince Martha for that Hey give us three more years and watch us develop this to a kid into the quarterback of the future there's no with a logical way for them it will be in the against their own best interests to take a quarterback with that high impact right I mean look I I think there which I do think there is some logic to taking that you know what to say to a with healthy in this situation right and you get you know but a great reports from the doctors because I firmly believe the way to win in the NFL if you have a really good cheap young quarterback you can build the rest your roster which Jeanette around that the league with with many teams having success that way to a you know before the injury was considered the best quarterback prospect Xander Locke's so I understand why where there's a lot of interest in him intrigue about him in the lines but you're one hundred percent right that in this situation alliance are in with both Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia a sense of being in a make or break year it just doesn't make sense for them to take a quarterback I can I can't see them let me put it that way I cannot see you've been taking a quarterback that high in the draft when they could get a real difference maker for the defense and that's what this team needs they believe to get over the hump and be a you know for any help playoff exactly people of people seem to forget that Matthew Stafford when he came out was considered the best quarterback in in in the draft of that year that's why he was the number one quarterback taken and everyone say what ours will have great future with him he's proven to be a really good quarterback the day you put to behind the same line of Matthew Stafford been playing on and he's not going to be the same quarterback he was at Alabama where he was protected by the biggest and best in and everybody on this team was faster and bigger than everybody else it's it's just everybody's in love with the new car smell you know and and they always think the next guy's going to be better I just logically don't see this happening for money point of view from the coaching point of view from all the rest of it and and and this but you know it's just to me it's a fear factor the people are afraid that if they pass on him and he turns into the next I don't know who do we compare him to but the the next big thing in court of marrying yeah well to breeze the mark Jackson whoever that all we could have had him well you no we could have a lot of gas we we have a motel Beckham all the way on through we could add so we'll see what happens but apparently I I honestly if you're basing your reporting on Kelly Stafford's tweeting much as I love Kelly in all the right that that's you know I am kind of I kind of stay away from that in terms of being factual we'll see work Dave appreciate your time as always you got a match at a time hi that's gonna rabbit over today's program we thank you for joining us back in the home studios next week they'll be nice to be back in Detroit appreciate.
Lions GM Bob Quinn: 'We didn't finish' the season
"We just didn't finish the season that assessment coming from the lions general manager about the lions lousy season lions general manager Bob Quinn used one specific phrase to describe the team's disappointing two thousand nineteen season Thomas say it over and over again this whole off season because when I look at everything just was a season we didn't finish we're in all the games you guys know all the statistics about how may times were leading in how many games or in and all that but at the end the day we went in the house and that's the bottom line the line's finished with a three twelve a one record and we'll have picked number three overall in the upcoming two thousand twenty NFL draft for news talk seven sixty WJR I'm

"I just don't think that they handled it in a very classy manner. That's how I look at it. Geez. It's the first week of mandatory minicamps and the lions have a couple of players skipping because they want new contracts and the Redskins are missing Trent Williams is also looking for a new deal. Right in Detroit. It's dairy sleigh and Damon snacks Harrison. I'll be curious to see how. Bob Quinn, Matt Patricia handle it because, you know, they're kind of old school. They're kind of patriots. They're not used to guys really doing. This guy is New England don't usually do this. And usually, if they do Bella Chac doesn't mess around with it. He trades them or hold their feet to the fire, but Bella checks in a much different situation than these guys are were these guys. Absolutely need to go ahead and win this year. Probably they need area slain Damon's next Harrison. The other thing is interesting is for all these guys Trent Williams, and slay, and snacks. They all have two years left on their deal. So to skip something mandatory take on ninety thousand dollar fine. When you still have two years left on your deal. Just kinda surprising. I'd say. Meanwhile, Browns running back to Johnson's showed up for many camps, but made it clear he would still prefer to be traded may not be as interesting as how Baker Mayfield handle it. Right. I'm not. This is the second time now. The first was how Baker Mayfield handled Hugh Jackson, and that situation now it's how he's handling the Duke Johnson situation. I'm just not a real big fan of how Baker Mayfield handles, these things. I'm just not. I don't think he's been around long enough. As a guy going into his second year to really know anything he doesn't know enough about the business of pro football to really be commenting on other guys situations like this for those of you that didn't hear it. You know, he was asked about it and said. Bed, something that we've been dealing with for a while. If we have guys that wanna be here. They'll show that the voice that obviously, he's gonna handle his stuff how he wants but you're either on this train, or you're not it's moving you can get out of the way or you can join us. So it is what it is. He went on to say he was asked if it's awkward. He said, it's, it's not awkward itself inflicted. It is what it is. It's not awkward for anybody else in the building, he's gotta do his job. He said he's a professional. I hope he does his job. I wouldn't say, I'm not happy about it. It's just the way he's handled. It it can be a stir up in the media. It can be, however it wants. But if somebody wants to be here, they'll be here in that situation. You've got guys within our locker dying and get playing time. They're dying to be here, and I get dukes been here for years. And every specked at, but it's about what are you doing right now? Now the past is the past my rookie year. I've got to learn from it. I've got to move forward. It's about right now, what we're going to do. I'm just not a big fan of Baker Mayfield really not supporting his teammate and frankly, what is a business situation? Do Johnson was very productive as I two years, really, you know, his first three years, and then your organization has a new GM and John Dorsey comes in and he signs Carlos Hyde, then he drafts Nick chub, and Duke Johnson, got by far the fewest amount of opportunities last year that he had gotten because Carlos Hyde and Nick Chubb were there, guys. And Duke Johnson wasn't and the team put him on the trade bloc after they signed Kareem hunt, who by the way has the exact same. Skillset or very similar as Duke Johnson..

"I think the price is way too low. I mean, the dolphins would do that in a heartbeat. I mean to get a franchise a lot of the lion. Your drought of get a lot of cap relief there too, right? Yeah. But cats import overrated, I mean, everyone's got an it's overrated until it's like not part of the argument. You're looking for I feel like that's a that's a big piece of it. Because he does have a huge salary staff. It would be great if. Yes, you replace it with a great rookie quarterback. But a Keiler Mary probably not making it to eight. So if you really want him, I don't think he's got eight. I mean, but they would have the ability to trade up to. Yeah. It's early who knows. But you can't pin that entire plan on Cuyler Murray because you're gonna you might not get. I mean, you have no idea what other teams are going to do to give up to to go get him. I think he would cost a lot more. I really do. I mean, I just think he's a top fifteen NFL quarterback. And that is worth multiple first round picks. I think the dolphins would love it. I think the idea of a fresh start on some level for both of those teams because this should be fun like is appealing to the NFL fan and meet all these teams completely reboot. And I think the dolphins are looking to rebuild their obviously a hill is out the door. It sounds like. And so I like the trade. I do too. I agree with Greg that compensation might have to be tweaked. But I do it's my two birds with one stone as far as boring teams. I'm thinking there is a flawed of this by the way because if you trade. Well, no, it does work actually the dolphins would send you their one. And then that would arm you with the ability to move up the board. The one thing is if Bob Quinn in the lions f up part two, and you have suddenly Matthew Stafford with six or seven more good years down in Miami. Because he like you said he's not been the problem Detroit. They are going to be fired. I mean, they'd have they have to pull off part B. Well, how about I go next because this is This this. one more point that I did some reading in the Detroit papers when I was doing the mail bag and public sentiment has turned it seems against Stafford. Yeah, right now, which is is weird because he he has every of the top like sevens passing seasons in history that franchise but last year was really bad. He took a step back in almost every relevant category and the team stunk and the Jim Bob cooter fell apart. So his value. Maybe is that its low point. And Detroit fans seem like they want a new start. It would be. I mean, part of me does wonder what Patricia thinks really of him of Quinn who inherited him, whether they think he can take the next step. It's not crazy. But he hasn't missed the game. In like, eight years. He has a has a ton of value. I mean, how will they be around to get another quarterback if they made it trade. Go ahead, Mark. All right. So mine mine has similar drumbeat to it. Where there's a part A N B in part one is the raiders continuing to reshape the raiders with a Gruden to Gruden trade where Jon Gruden ships Derek Carr who in my deepest suspicions. I just don't believe he's totally on board with you've been trying to treat their car to every team in the end. I think he's I think marks think something could happen here. But I think that he's I think there's reasons to like Derek Carr and Gruden a like some enough that he could sell them to group and be to Jay Gruden who Redskins desperately need a quarterback. And if you're Jay Gruden I really wonder if you have time to risk it on a rookie. And hope it goes. Well, you don't you need someone that you can plug in start right away. And Derek Carr fits the Bill of someone that there's no question that he'd be your week one starter and you ride with it. And in return the Redskins because Derek Carr is a up and down product get him for a second round pick this year number two pick..
All 12 playoff coaches are tied to Bill Walsh or Parcells
"The head coaches in the playoffs that season come from the coaching. Trees of other Bill Walsh for Bill Parcells Abella check. Anthony Lynn, Sean Payton. All coached under Parcells Jason Garrett and Bill O'Brien are further down the Parcells coaching tape. But they all come from the Bill Parcells coaching tree. And that means the other seven come from the Bill Walsh coaching tree. Andy Reid coached under Mike Holmgren was Walsh disciple. Four others come directly from Andy. That's John Harbaugh. Matt Nagy Doug Peterson and Frank Reich. So as we prepare to watch these games this weekend and throughout these playoffs. There is still the influence of those two legendary preeminent coaches of the eighties. If you will in Walsh and parcels what what thoughts Trump to your mind? When you see that? Look, I know that Bill walls is someone who is highly highly respected by guys like parcels end by guys like Bill Belichick. He's at the very very top of this whole thing. And they as far as situational football's concern, and as far as really just being able to build an entire football federation. He's set the standard everyone else is trying to follow now. And now is it is pretty cool though to watch kinda how bills people have done how Andy Reed's people were doing. I mean, it's it's really neat. Because really there's only so many things you can do in full. There's only so many formations you can come up with and so many defenses you can run then it just comes down to good play styles. Make fights right and Walsh that the west coast against the smashmouth run the ball in play defense style of ourselves. And if you look at it that still holds true today. Most of the Andy Reid disciples over there. Bill walsh. They're going to get the ball out. Quick. Quick eater intermediate passing game highly rhythmic west coast offense. Then you look at the Bill Parcells disciple disciples, we're going to run the football player action shots down the field and had this big physical defenses that try to beat you up and want to make this game playing the phone booth. You've heard me say this on this show that if the guys that are really good the great coaches right now, and the guys that are going to continue to be one of those eight teams looking for aid coach on finding the guy. They got two more rounds hired and what he was worth paying the money. But the offense at wine or coordinator gotta get that. Dial. Did everybody gets Matthew Stafford dog in but you can't get the quarterback but upset you? Carry on Jobson back back back back strong quarterback with hands feet ability to block, I stand behind my lines about Clinton. He's doing what he needs to do and lands gonna feel good team. All right preciado. Jeff. Thank you very much. Maybe Jeff being the voice of reason here because this this two thousand eighteen season right now is I think beyond teetering. I think it's on a. A quick quick fall to the ground floor. You know, it's interesting, Steve, you know, I think a lot of us hope for the playoffs this year. But knew that there was a lot of work to be done, and you and I talked to Bob Gwynne on the eve of camp starting and that was one of the things that he said he said, hey, listen, we're close, but we have some work to do. There's a lot more work than we thought that has to be done. I don't think there's any question about that. And to me, you know, what it's it's not a front seven issue anymore. I think it's defense thing. I think I think there are a lot of spots. That ninety either need to be short up or or guys need to be moved out. I mean, the same guys aren't making place over and over and over, and that's that's an issue. Well, I think you know, we saw but what I'm about to say, it's a double edged sword. We saw the competitive spirit of Bob Quinn when he fired Jim Caldwell said nine and seven is not good enough. And he brings in the guy that I think he wanted from the day he took the GM here. So he brings in map Patricia again under the guise that nine and seven were the lions have been the last two years is not good enough at that point lions fans applauded and said, you know, what you are. Absolutely, right. Would this franchise going back to back nine and seven banks almost closed a parade was almost given. And I'm talking about. But what? Mister quinn. Did was he brought himself into the story. Now, all of a sudden, whereas the lions are sitting at three and six nine and seven looks pretty good ain't gonna get you much. But I'm just saying no eight Steve me, I loved it. I think there are a lot of Lyon fans out there. They take that kind of mindset. Oh, we had a winning season two years enrolled that hadn't happened since the ninety two. What does that mean? What what is? It you go down my apps one year. You get hammered by Seattle the next year. You don't even make the playoffs to me. Yes. You should aim higher. But as you said in the process of doing that Bob Quinn, put a pretty big target on him in a lot of people are going to be saying, Bob. What happened right? All right. We got time for a caller to before the break. Let's go to Phoenix Brian. You're on lions radio. How're you doing? Hey, Steven how you guys doing today? Thank you for the call from you know, you know, the timing is really a lot in sports. And and to your point there. Stephen in Sean, I I the timing of the hiring of Patricia was two years too late. I do believe it's my opinion that ownership pressured the Colo being retained in the same way that Patricia was pressured into keeping Jim Bob cooter. And the timing of those things is really thrown a lot of things off with this transition into Bob Quinn's regime. So that's number one with that timing. Number two. There's a guy from scratch one. You guys may be familiar with this work. His name is Mike Babcock. Yeah. He he has a thing where he says show up on time. And that is one thing that I will say through three head coaches Matthew Stafford does not show up on time by and large. Sometimes he does. But for the most part, he does not and many times the lines are down, you know, multiple touchdowns because he is not able to respond in kind to an early score. And I do not I do believe in that savvy is the best quarterback I've seen I'm forty years old. But that is not really saying so much when you look at the lions history of quarterbacks, I think, he's got two paths. I believe he is Jeff the modern day version of Jeff George he is what he is. He's very average quarterback. And by the time all these things that need to be fixed. We saw glaring today. He's going to be well on the wrong side of thirty yards and even going to be more. So when they do get those in place, and then there's the timing will be off once again in the same way. I mean, if you had my way I would get a second or third round pick this off season. If anybody would take him for that. And just kind of get the timing. Ryan have a habit one fifteen or fourteen year for a year or two. But let's get the timing fact where it used to be because this this franchise is going absolutely nowhere. Because the timing is off love your geysers, recaps and talk to you. Good point. Steve. I mean, we all pulled our hair on our head last year at some of the starch remember about midway point of the season. Lyons had the tendency just coming out of the gate, slowly. And and thankfully for them. It happened against a couple of bad teams that they were able to fight their way in maybe that wasn't a Caldwell thing. Maybe maybe just maybe that wasn't a Caldwell thing. Because I think he brings up a great point and one that is in play right now when you take a look at how poorly they've come out of the gate. Well, you know, but here's the thing. If the lions this off season put a sign over Matthew. Stafford said I said available for a third round pick for a second round pick. How many teams you think would grab that with with the with the the number being what it is? Contract taken into consideration. I mean that that's the one thing for anybody that talks about doing what is the quarterback position. And there's some NFL. What do you think? Jacksonville would give up. Blake bortles. Stafford democracy. No, listen, I get what he's saying. Steve in the regard that the mix isn't there right now in this league provides a blueprint for teams to get better. And the blueprint is get yourself that young quarterback and build around him. What we did that ten years ago, and guess what we didn't build around him. We had poor poor brutal management be interested to see if Bob Quinn could have done that. All right. More of your thoughts. Coming up again. The number to call eight hundred eight five nine zero nine five seven this is lions radio. All right. Welcome to f one fifty radio.

"People on look good. He beat the Steelers in a playoff game. And this is his second go. Why why didn't you look at you? I mean, come on Patricia joke. Well, you torn eight-year man after my own heart. I believe I agree with you on that. And you know what? But now the lions got what they got. Bob Quinn, who came from the poor the patriot organization got him a patriot guy, and they gotta make it work. It's got to work. But they're recycling players. And what I'm saying is. And I won't let you finish. Okay. A lot of times you have a system. That's successful. Okay. You copycat that? Now, the got the are off who's over the falcons he actually knows what he's doing by the coast that he hired the second coach steady higher which was an improvement or whatever to wear their their opinion appearing in the Super Bowl. Okay. You get this other guy. He's he's I mean, what did he do get the coffee? I don't know. All I'm saying if he wasn't a big part of a he's just a part of the patriot. And we're finding out with a lot of these so-called great assistance. They're they're not paying off when they leave the court. I have to talk with all the time. I mean, it's like people do not want to give Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. They're probably the only common common stave. Then only two people were guys who leave and go somewhere else coaches players. Look like stars in New England. No, you're right nine one anything else. I mean, you know, I'm just saying that's the only point I wanted to know as well as I do everybody in thanks for the phone call. I appreciate it torn, you know, as well as I do every if you you come from a women winning organization a team, I a professional team that wins Super Bowls in different things like multi Super Bowls. Everybody wants a piece of that. So they're gonna take the assistant coaches because they're not going to get the head coach and they're not going to get the quarterback. So they take pieces of what they can. And you're right. These guys are not panned out. So really if you do anything, it's the it's the head coach on a quarterback that you wanna get. "Again a top shelf job by the detroit lions last night for the draft party twenty eighteen fun time had by mr president congratulations once again way to go thanks dave good morning well you know what there was some speculation that bob quinn matt patricia the powers that be looking at trade down that wasn't the case one off with the twentieth selection and that is the numero uno center on the board frank rag now out of arkansas and mr president i i like it i like it a lot yeah it was it was a picture that we had targeted going into the draft it'd be thought might be available and the way things cell he was he was there on the board for us important to have a stable middle part of your offensive line both to run the ball and protect our quarterback and we were thrilled that he was still there i think there was a lot of interest in him right behind us and we did not listen to that interest in trade out of our spot but we took the guy that we wanted and got frank well the speculation was at cincinnati was ready to pounce on him right after our selection meanwhile when you take an offensive lineman in the first round you know i've said it before i'll say it again there's nothing sexy about it however much like my stand up comedy career when i would tell a joke people would get it sometimes four days later when this thing sam i think you know lines nation will embrace it because certainly rod we have got to run the football we we need to run the ball better and we need to protect our quarterback and having an interior line that can do that is critical and i think our fans will we'll see the benefit of this as we get season that's for sure and it was.

"To be an eleven million dollar player this year and i just will remind the of two things that number one richard sherman was unemployed and did not have a contract all right and so he went out there and started looking around and he thought that his best chances we're going to be san francisco and detroit okay and as i wrote in my monday morning quarterback column yesterday he called matt patricia bob quinn of lions during his negotiations and told them here's what i have from san francisco and they said too rich for our blood and so if he walks out of there and he gets into free agency this week let's just say any starts looking around could he have done better it's possible it's in fact it's very possible should he may be just signed a one year deal proved that he's a great player still in come back next year that would be my only criticism of richard sherman but i do want to just say one other thing you know maybe and is he said to me and as john lynch said to me we had one advantage that no one else had we afforded him the opportunity to play the seattle seahawks twice a year and colin maybe joe thomas doesn't understand what it's like to get cut by somebody and then want to show them that they made a mistake maybe the people who've written all these things that said what an idiot erasure chairman is you know don't understand that maybe this is what he wanted k and could have gotten a couple million more guaranteed maybe but thirty year old corners with problems potentially with both feet i i mean i don't he wasn't gonna make a lot more money where everyone the monday morning quarterback.
