Golden State Warriors' Klay Thompson suffers season-ending Achilles tear

"The Warriors Press conference to introduce the Warriors Top two Jap fix. Bob Myers certainly poured his heart out, expressing the pain everyone felt in learning that Clay Thompson, who spent a year rehabbing a torrent left a CL now faces another long haul out for the season now with a Tauron right Achilles tendon. That injury happened during a pick up game in L. A. But on the lighter side, we

Thompson has torn Achilles tendon, expected to miss season

"So it's the injury everybody's talking about but with clay sadly you gotta specify which injury you're talking about. Are you talking about the one in game. Six of the twenty nine thousand finals. The last time we saw him play a game or the one suffered earlier in the week. Which is an achilles tendon. Tear he is now out. It could be if the calendars right two and a half years between games. We're looking forward to having him back at the start of the twenty twenty one. Twenty two season knick. Fidel has been all over the warriors for years and he joins us on the shell. Pennzoil performance line nick. Good morning first thing. Just the response in and around the organization on the news zubin. Everybody's just depressed excited leading into the draft. And in the fact that wiseman was there at number two he was number one on their board and and they were just really looking forward to having steph klay draymond and then plugging in wiseman and seeing what we can give them and then they range of emotions in those couple of hours before the draft and then after the draft they really couldn't even celebrate. Everybody was so sad about clay. I mean he is the guy behind the scenes with all the star power in that locker room that sets the tone for everybody else. And that's why kerr and all those players they love it and so to know that he's going to be out again for another year which just crushing for. Everybody involved nikki. Give us an insight. Into how bob myers and company dealt with the news of klay thompson literally hours before the nba draft that make their decision challenging more challenging looking at other guys like lamelo ball considering he was going to be available. Jay bob address that right afterwards instead. Look wiseman was our guy if he was there we were taken him and obviously if the emotions involved right before the big or unprecedented we. We really never seen anything like it. Before where a star player who has won titles in an organization gets another serious injury right before you gotta make a huge selection for your future but all along when you talk to people in the organization they love what wise men could give them and they're confident that once he gets into their system playing and learning alongside draymond that he can be maybe that bridge or potentially down the line Tracey's nobody knows for sure but wiseman all along was their guy in. I don't think anything that happened with. Clay change to focus when he was number two

"To the N B A and Golden State will once again be without all star Clay Thompson for the season, this time with a Tauron right Achilles that he suffered in a workout yesterday. Warriors GM Bob Myers Very hard for an athlete. You know, Sometimes you get to stop playing on your own time and On your own terms, and clay is going to keep playing. When it gets disrupted like this for an athlete of his caliber. It hurts and it hurts us that care about him. Sure fans that follow us. Um Don't feel the same way we do. Late tops and out for the season with a torn right, Achilles. Mr. Passes with a Tauron left a CL golden state on the verge of acquiring Kelly. "Walk into Bob Myers President. Of Basketball, operations with Golden State Warriors three time champion two time. Executive. Of the year Bob Welcome in good to be back with you man. Yeah. Thanks for having me. It's. Interesting Times interesting times. It is and I wonder Bob you are across the country you're in northern California now, the League's return last night. In Orlando a Soobee watched it watched at least some of the game what did it look like to you and you think about when all of this started in it started? In Golden State when you guys were going to be the first team to play a game without fans and how quickly. Escalated to the League, shutting down what were your thoughts watching this from across the country last night. More kind of proud of the effort leadership sacrificed the players I mean people can say that players make a lot of money in coaches and. Everyone around the base. Lucky. So start with that baseline beyond that you know not seeing your family. For weeks months potentially at a time and. They're supporting the League I mean there's twenty two teams there. There's eight that aren't. So the fact that it happened the fact that it was high quality basketball good games the fact that the players are. Really I think sacrifices the key word I hesitate to say it because. A lot of people are sacrificing and much bigger ways but from the professional standpoint and part being part of our league. You appreciate the culmination of a lot of hard work from the League side to do it safely as you can for the players side to Kinda give up a lot of their freedoms and things they're usually able to do. So thankfulness really for all of it looks like it's being done safely. It Bob when you think back to the viruses beginnings in terms of its context with the NBA and I think the League itself was sharing information with the teams. at a daily basis all the way back in January I believe it started maybe even sooner but you're dealing with local municipalities about the arena fans steph curry took a test. You know prior to I guess probably about a week prior, there were some questions of whether Steph might be a positive for the coronavirus. From your understanding of what might happen. How quickly did it feel like? It escalated in your world. Yeah I look in the entire world of sports, but it escalated fast it was you know the the kind of. The moment the headline I thought I'd never see was the NCAA tournaments canceled. That was kind of the one that was. Wow, this is pretty real and I don't know if that preceded. Post Rudy Gobert testing positive right after it was bob and it's funny. You say that because. I was Rudy Gobert. Had tested positive in the league had shutdown that night the next day I want the Bristol and I was in studio which looking back I probably shouldn't have done but I was up in Bristol and I was sitting on the set of sportscenter and Davis was They had a separate set for him and Jay Bilas was at an must've been the ACC tournament and and I was getting ready to go on the next segment and in that moment. When reese was going to switch over to maybe Kevin the gone there say steel and I was waiting to talk about the NBA they word that the tournament was cancelled and then they stayed with that remember sitting there I should have just left the set because they weren't GonNa come to me because that was such a a bombshell story but boy I remember sitting there looking around and try to understand what I was hearing. 'cause it went from well, maybe some the conference will play, but they won't have fans. And all of a sudden for them to say the tournament was cancelled. It's funny. You say that because even though. The NBA you didn't know it was going to be a week ten days, two weeks and it'll come back baby or but the tournament canceled as canceled. You're right. That's felt different. Yeah I think it was the enormity of it. I mean we didn't know who wants Rudy Gobert tested positive and they suspended our league. They didn't cancel our league in that moment. They didn't say the League is over I think a lot of people thought we might come back in a few weeks once we had a better handle on things but the tournament being canceled you knew that it wasn't something that could be recovered. Right? It was it was there's a finality to it. And a loss to it kind of whereas our seasons now continuing yes, it's different. It's a different kind of season but that tournaments never going to be played and you're going to see in the history books two thousand twenty. NCA Champions. Going to be blank and that's That's that's a whole new thing and for some reason that stuck with me but as far as how fast it culminated your question really really quickly and even leaving in San Francisco's all the sudden. You're not leaving your house I mean, it was not just. Professionally, it was society where very abruptly in our city in our market it became. Sheltering in place and there's a lot of fear. Fear of the unknown and it was happened very fast. It's funny. You talk about the torment I remember. Maybe it was right after I think I might A. Did you had an anniversary? Didn't you? You're UCLA team had your? Of Your National Title I. Guess It was. Twenty, five, twenty, five years. And I remember. Right around. Then we started to show we are showing all old NCAA tournament games. That's all we had the air and I'm watching Thai said they go coast to coast and scores and there you are picking him up you're coming off the bench or maybe you're on the floor you you came in Grab A. Clear where I would hand it on the bench can't. For mislead the listeners. And then it ended up a sports illustrated cover, which was fitting. It was you could see your arms wrapped around ties said, nate sort of your torso maybe. But. Not your face. You're the guy behind the guy probe. Really. So right I mean people say near that sports illustrated cover and I said, well, that's wrong. First of all, they should put any part of my body on there. But the fact they didn't put my face was was right. It was whoever chose that picture? Let's not get this guy what did this guy to do anything but now that was those were the tournament. The hard part is in life you know having lived a couple of championships or few on Mba side and one.

"Suns beat the warriors one twenty one one ten it wasn't even that close warriors allowing a hundred twenty point to be to their first four games for the second time in franchise history but Steph curry goes down winds up being a broken hand coach Steve Kerr in a tough spot start for us on many levels so we're just trying to find her footing and obviously this puts us in a in a tough spot so we'll we'll assess certain we'll go from there we able to talk to staff at all after the game any sense of what what he what his emotions are right now no he was not in the locker room just now when the game ended Stephen I just heard the news what do you think though right away about that responsibility on some of the young guys the extra minutes now coming up for the young guys and where to go from here well you know it's a great opportunity for these young guys to play it's also a little bit too much here is so you want to you want to bring along rookies as best you can and we're just putting so much on their plate we have no choice with all the injuries so I think for you know they have to just seize the opportunity and we as coaches we have to help them do the best job they can and continue to learn general Myers a general manager Bob Myers telling ESPN's Nick for dell that curry will have an MRI and CT scan of it from there they will determine whether or not he needs surgery and what the time table will be what will it be like for the warriors though moving

"Kevin left what you sometimes see what you've seen other organizations in the league there is like a real animosity that you can feel from the team who feels shunned who feels let down own we did all we could for you you appreciate it it's it's always felt to me that the warriors made it made a decision and I think it speaks to you said the relationships there was none of that when Kevin left it almost seemed a little bit I wanna say you were at peace with it because you wanted him the eh but I I don't know that you were shocked that he left that it seemed like he just wanted something else and there was more just gratitude we won the titles together we had a historic success and a lot of ways and we're we're glad you're part of it it felt like that's how you guys looked at it when he walked out the door I think bout was exactly what it was I think when you know obviously we all want to win we're super competitive and most importantly we all have a job to do which is to win games and try to win championships and booties arenas like we all have an obligation but more importantly to us is the human side of it and none of us WanNa see Kevin here if he's not happy we want to see him do the absolute best possible thing for Kevin because also yeah Kevin can stay here and if he's unhappy will still win because we'll still be really good but we're not going to be happy right and nobody wanted to go through that environment anymore want that and so it he thinks there's something on the other side for him more power to him do we want the absolute best for him and whatever that thing is we all hope it works out because at the end day on the other side of this thing everybody loves basketball is the life that you live on a daily basis in and if you're not happy on daily basis forget the basketball who cares about tat like what about your daily happiness and for him to make in like that we we all know is not basketball like we won and had he been on Florida finals we would've won again so clearly is in basketball so because it's not a can't be it's impossible to basketball with the success that we had so you just wish and want the best for your brother and and that's what it was from here I think a lot of teams that you know show that light when when a guy leave or you know feels like they've been messed over they usually have an accomplished what they thought they should've accomplish or they set out to accomplish because when the Brian James Lead Cleveland the first time all hell broke loose he left a second time when everyone said thanks why because they accomplished what they said right to accomplish and so now it's like you've done your duty great do what you WanNa do with your life well yeah we did our duty but more importantly do what you WanNa do life because it's your life and we want to see the absolute best for you in that light German you mentioned Lebron leaving Cleveland going to Miami like I don't know of Kevin Durant comes to golden state if Lebron hadn't made that decision and then Kevin comes here and you win big he comes onto a team net had historic success wins record there before and had lost two in the playoffs and it feels like those two decisions in this has decade you talk about like that term player empowerment what exactly it means does it feel like what you guys went through gold state has opened the door maybe fully open like anybody can go anywhere they want for any reason without fear of repercussions the perception like this summer showed that even a little more that this group and the Lebron a lot of credit for that going to Miami changed but your team did to me validated decision player wants to make Gulford oh for sure I mean like you said Lebron kind of started this whole thing going to Miami and it just gave players a different type of power when they did that because you know it was just like Oh you're not in control of my few controlling my future you're not going to tell me what I can is frowned upon before it creates change and then it just Kinda went on a time when on then he went back and then all of a sudden Tevin came here and I think that really opened the floodgates so Lebron created the change for sure and definitely spearheaded and gave players power players ever had before and then Kevin being star Kevin is and and not only leaving okay see but actually come into a team that had just WANNA NBA Finals. they lost in game seven and one seventy three games that was kind of that final stamp of do what you want with your future and and whatever you think the right move is for you do exactly that and you know when you look at the summer all these guys don't try to get to the situation they want to go to and Kawhi Leonard definitely does not leave Toronto after winning an NBA championship if all of those things previously does not happen and uh Kevin does not lead wars and go to Brooklyn of all of those things previously doesn't happen you've been on the other side of it Bob Agent for longer than even you've been GM president it you've seen the evolution in this league from an and you represented star players you're too big company that Tracy McGrady who moved and lots of big players here's how different does this league feel now than even even five or six seven years ago yes leagues different so as soon is so is life like my dad worked for one company whole life if I was scared to leave you know didn't know if you get another job thirty years I mean guys worked in factories they weren't looking around for letter but but when we evaluate anybody in life I think the best way I heard it I just read somebody said just because you don't understand doesn't mean they're confused and I think you could apply that to anybody in basketball was this guy doing doing that because you don't get it doesn't mean he doesn't get it so for whatever reason whether it's a player anybody who am I to be so arrogant to think like he needs to do this I don't his life I don't know what makes this guy happy or unhappy why would I presume that I do and I think that's the hardest part being in the public eye not me but like dream on or even well known I think how do I ignore what will be said and live my life in the era where the media is bigger than it's ever been where your life is either on social media or people commenting on you or you've got we're following you everywhere you go and you don't know if you should do that or if you shouldn't or if you should have twitter counter instagram or should I post this post that or what if I say this I commend anybody that says like this is what I want to do because that's all we're going to do for your whole damn life is figure out the answers to those questions how do I best move in a direction makes me happy and I don't know anything else to anybody and if it doesn't please you whoever you are media fans I'm sorry because I have a choice can choose to please you choose to please me and it doesn't make me bad or good it just means I'm doing my best to go to bed at night and raise my family and be a good human being because I won't be unless I follow this gut instinct so what I think we as a society do a good job of is is taking a step back insane hang on a second here and especially with athletes do I have at me joke around about this like you I don't even know what it's like let's say dream on drives home to my house today it just goes to the supermarket if I if I put my cell he put what is that like the what if these guys that can you even walkouts let's just start there so then I'm going to sit here and say well we shouldn't do this or that when I have no idea what it's like to just walk outside to go to a movie to go to my family's house they treating me differently to speak publicly as much as they do nobody knows that stuff I'll never know all the time I see it I've seen it with our team who the hell am I to think that I can understand that so then you start there and go okay now I'm GonNa not only not understand that but then I'm GonNa tell this guy what he should or shouldn't do that's a pretty arrogant outlook but we do that all the time this guy is crazy how's he holding out you talking about anybody Andrew Luck retire like what's wrong with this guy what do you mean what's wrong what if he's happier now than he's ever been is that a problem but the problem is more for players now is no because of the Games they are the driver of all this but the issue is that how do you move through all that as a player when technically the fans own you to a certain extent but if you let that happen are you gonna be happy so it's kind of a cycle so I think when you watch players the ability to persevere when you always think I'm out of here I'm GonNa go there some of it's great because you have confidence in yourself you know what I'm GonNa try this out we're just trying to live full lives and make mistakes like maybe one of these players maybe me maybe any of us man that was stupid why the hell they do that but at the time it felt I think that's all you can really do draymond you could have gone into free agency next summer you did the deal in July four years four and you could have waited and waited till next year to do it is that a conversation you and Bob have you enjoy lake have before even your agent it's involved in it or because of the history how how do you guys do that with our history it is definitely a conversation that we have Before How do you want me to handle it and I said great thank you and you enrich can handle it from there and that's what they did survey and then Bob landed back like maybe Wednesday evening Thursday and rituals like all right and then we go from there that idea Max contract there is just something there is a I know I could afford but what was more important to me was what our team will look like moving forward and.

"Soho Shop Dot COM T. ISS OT S. H. O. P. Dot Com and jewelry stores Shen wide and follow the Hashtag this is your time and t so dot us on facebook and Instagram for more information and about T- so what was the hardest thing you had to in your time here the hardest thing you had to hear from Bob that I was being suspended last year and that was the hardest thing for me because a lot of people don't understand we bob does and I started to tell myself in my mind while he's Benami like not as my guy I'm super tight with Bob like tomorrow I understand this business like it it is what it is that's always call like he's plays a much different role for me and my life then the the manager of basketball team that's great great title Congressional President of Basketball Great titles for me those I'm really don't mean anything because he plays such a bigger role in my life and and someone that I can get the true from almost like a light coacher older brother like however you WanNa frame it he plays that role in my life and so that's someone always called no matter what and it just felt like wow is this not the guy known for all these years as he turned Norman and I started to tell myself all of these things and then our turn on read and everybody's like Oh my God the warriors side Kevin Durant it's like all right that was I think was the toughest thing for me yeah and that was an that was exactly was going to be the perception I gotta believe Bob when you and Steve and all the who make that decision you knew that was what you're going to have to answer to they Kevin's a free agent they have to side with they have to suspend Raymond they face with Kevin I imagine you that would be the byproduct of that of that narrative but can answer that are you now with that I don't even know where did you where you sit on that now I just had to accept the fact that I was wrong and once I was able to get over my stubborn news and accept the fact that I was wrong I was able to move on but it's like one of those things in life like you hold onto this thing and tell you need bear being you're like on finding like therapy I can do my own and like that one thing holds you back from whatever it is trying to reach I had to there's like d talk myself in like you're wrong in what they did was actually the right thing do I think it could have been handled better I think there was other ways to handle it but nonetheless something had to happen and with that today you know that one is hard because the only thing I care about I don't work for this is what I think I work for a boss Joe I think I worked for the players they know where I work for them that's how I look at it I want to help them I don't even know that we should get a ring I don't play basketball in the games I just want to help draymond green when a championship or whoever comes through here to give them to feel like I helped them do something I don't ever viewed as I did that I helped them win and the fans visit was the people I work for so beyond that what I care about is that my relationships with he doesn't know me in that I've changed that was the hardest thing because I we do know each other pretty well and I could see wheels turning like a really like you're you're me too this is where you are and we didn't talk and we talked like we didn't he wouldn't speak to me and so when you talk about how that was going to be perceived I I'm not stupid I know what people are going to say right the only way I can go to bed after that decision was I thought what we did was right whatever the hell happens after that is going to especially in this league I can't truly media narratives never will so the only way you exist in any job is you do what you think is right and whatever lands on you lands on you but most importantly marlins ship with dream on or any player for that matter to say this is what I thought was right and if you really know somebody maybe I was wrong I don't even know like sometimes if you do the best you can and could have been handled differently I think could be handled differently preceding that if I had to go back wouldn't have been after it would have been before there was a build up to what happened that night that maybe you should have gone out in front of Yeah Yeah and that's where you kick yourself that's the job if you I know my that's my feel like you are you look around the locker after loss and you look at Draymond or you look at any player in the when you go something something happening or any plan sometimes it's good sometimes it's I get and most of the time in life you know we don't we don't have those conversations when you told them you get shaped like pretty easy to not say that probably not but the level I don't know how dream felt I last year I was exhausted I was bottom line like I know people whatever they think of it they think of it but that's where you start that's where you start going I just don't have the energy so you always look back on things should have more energy but it's the only thing you have in business you walked in my house there's no way I I like my job you'd have to dig through my cabinets find anything warriors what I care about is not an autographed picture Draymond Green I WANNA in fifteen years call dream on green and he's in San Francisco in your head let's go to dinner and have a real relationship with him or any player I don't care if the player played here plays here one what else matters you know you win a championship you get these we make money and then you go home and you got all these people you worked with you don't have a relationship with with his teammates with your coach like what are we this business is so hard to maintain relationships it is it is so hard because of the component of it the competitive part of it but what I love is had I not been in basketball you think I'm ever meeting draymond green in my life kid from sagging aw you know I didn't grow anywhere near like that so in ten years if I had entered almost any other walk of life I'm not going to hang out with a kid from Haganah that now has more money than knows what to do with chief all this stuff and can sit down and be like how's it going dat you know like what's happening you mean so much more to me so when we had that conversation I was like am I losing a relationship like I'm losing my losing what what matters to me and so that's what was hard for I know it's hard for him but you know if you have a relationship get through this stuff you talk about maybe it could have been addressed before and this is what I don't think like the average fan understands is the role like when is it right for management ah the coaches different coaches in the locker room every day with you I think the front office feels like there's always a different feeling about how much should I be in the locker room I think you have to have a strong relation with your coach some GM's and some coaches go crazy if they see their GM in the locker because relationships strong you have that you have that Sapir but how much should management get involved like hey if it's between you and K. D. or any dynamic in a locker room that relationship how much of it is let us work it out or hey maybe we all need to talk about this thing where maybe you guys need to be involved like you're thinking on that is as time goes on my thinking on that is is two sided I side is most management estate hell out the way and the reason I think that is because there is a very unique situation here where this is actually my friend that's not the case in most situations so interred by knows more than the average the president of general marriage because he has relationships with all of us bob how to release or have a relationship with me still has a relationship with Kevin so because there's relationships there when you see Bob Walking through the locker room it's not like Oh what is he coming to say or why is he in here one of the guys in here or bows and the coats of at the same time we're gonNA Koto but it's not like this guy can't wait to the players you know one of the guys in Kotor and so in most situations management don't know the players and you're trying to manage a situation managed personalities manage relationships it you don't know and so in turn you get in a way and you mess it up even more our situation is different where we all have relationships and so I think if you ask me through all it is that we've done and been able to occur most people would be like Oh and lost three two one oh you guys lost the warfare you debt we had was our communication lapped when we needed to most and at that time where we needed to be communicating about everything that needed to be corrected and being out in front of the problem of the problem that was brewing our communication is that where it needed to be and because our communication was where it needed to be it took a huge hit on what we have built here what we have been here and you know we got through it and work through it and almost one champion ship but we also all went through some unnecessary things that if our communication was a stellar as it always been we wouldn't have gone through and who knows what that changes what people don't know which is so hard to know which requires time and energy is Kevin and dream on probably will be the closest guys they're going to be friends for their whole life it's almost like a brother thing where draymond they know each other like there's a real relationship there and so you know it's one of those things.

"Are they gonNa win the stock the season and then all of a sudden we got over sixteen to seventeen and then everyday you look sports centers like chasing thirty be but to it wasn't I don't cool the thing I remember watching that game seven was that both teams would I remember never forget how exhausted your body for that grind it's a lot harder train your mind for that then your body and so as much as it takes out of the physically to go through an NBA season playoff run an NBA finals run it takes a lot more mentally because you know when you think about it there's guys and I say this from experience there's guys they're playing four NBA Games and has never been gotten there blue mussels to fire once again I can say that from experience because I just learned is two years ago and it all about to say as some of the top athletes in the world probably the best skill that all of us have is compensation we know how to compensate for whatever isn't working we know how to compensate make something else do the job of that muscle of that ligament of whatever it is we're masters of compensation in so physically you could be hurting you could be beat up you're gonNA find a way to compensate make it work but mentally it's a lot harder to compensate mentally than physically and when you look at some of the things that have taken place over the course of this run the mental aspect of it was much more draining than the physical and and so for me that completely takes out the whole narrative of seventy three ends causes a championship you talking about both the wanting to go for and Bob and I think you alluded to this the other day and you were talking about organizations and like you said you haven't played any world but you talk to guys and you see you read and you watch and you see how different organizations operate in terms of dictating there's places they dictate lineups they dictate minutes they dictate style of play they dictate what you say and the media we can go down the list that has not been the case here what is a leader of a team is a captain as a star player what is your expectation of the front office what do you want from a GM to make this thing go most importantly and knob been blessed as a as a player news organization and you know everyone who's come through her Muslim Portland's honesty and you know just be upfront and honest with me if I'm planning horrible tell me if I'm fat Uh You know we know we all know last year tell me did bob tell you that last year he told me very nice way but he's I mean just honesty honesty about everything that's going on transparency and I think the luxury debt we avid is Bob doesn't know how to lie he like Bob will come up to you Vita sugar coat something or he'll try to beat around something he's going to tell you exactly what he means to say and not even realized that he told US they found out on twitter in our later got trade like that's not the norm in our industry this is a dog eat dog world slash industry I'm GONNA do us absolute best for me and you figure it out later we don't deal with that here basketball the new arena facilities all of that stuff is great but the one thing none of those things can replace his peace of mind and just being.

"Center for what I think is a remarkable oribiting our plus because to the architects of this Golden State Warriors. maybe a finals of three championships seven years together as president and the thirty fifth overall pick in the draft who became an all star in this league you and we talked about everything from Kevin Durant to the hard conversations that have to happen between management and players and how relationships carry the day through a championship run like the warriors have had and bond Bob Myers Draymond Green Steph Curry Klay Thompson a really remarkable window into this warriors dynasty here's Draymond Green and Bob Myers here in the new chase center in San Francisco with Draymond Green Bob Myers the I I've done a few podcasts I've had two coaches rival coaches have had a a GM coach have not had a GM and star player with the history you to have so so I thanks for doing this guys before we started here Bob Walker into the room had just overheard what going on on facetime outside in the hallway by that we both got young kids so I was marveling at how he communicates with his his his little boy and I was wondering if I could use some of that language he started uh he's laying out on the floor cry so I said Hey dj can get up please and he just looks at me so say Dj you to get up off the floor and then he may get up but he may not he does everything on all the time he's a pretty interesting kid what what is it like learn ice too so it's still the early part of this but even at that age like they're going to emulate what you say what you do remember friend of mine was a college coach his wife was giving him grief because his kid was coming home and taking his jacket off and throwing it on the floor and throwing it on the floor because you watch his father do it coaching so he's pulling his jacket off and throwing it around the house she's like see what you do like are you more cognizant now of a little bit absolutely have to be he he he watches everything that I do and he tries to emulate it you know we were we were at my daughter's birthday party couple days ago and and she had to send his birth they party so they had to characters running around and he is terrified at a character so men and women play one of the Games and we were planning to soccer gaming each other uh and I scored a goal and I clap my hands like yes and he looked at me and every time he thought he did something I probably beat them for two zero not allowed to beat my daughter's name and scored I told him it was him scoring though so every time and he Optus hands every time I say yes just like obviously a small thing but he likes to emulate everything I do so you definitely have to be aware of what you say and what you do dramatic Bob like when you guys think of when you both walked into the Warriors Bob when you drafted drew it was real your first full draft as the GM call from the agents side you guys are over in Oakland you come into the thirty fifth pick in the draft like you don't even know what GM did all day you were figuring out what what does it do all day right like you should understand that like when you guys think about where you were in your lives where the organization was your across the bay it became a like a rock tour around here it was not that in two thousand and twelve if you WANNA use that analogy we were we were band playing the the local you're with a smattering of applause you know we were putting fires on the telephone post to say come watch US play and talking to family and friends and saying we're we're pretty good and and we might be better and then if you want to continue that it became you know by the end of it all it was idioms by the end of it all it was stadiums playing which is what you're alluding to it became more than I mean when I took the job as I told my wife I said so you're gonNA be media it's the worst nobody who's I said I feel like I thought that we were getting I was getting the keys to drive like a Volvo or an accurate not that those are bad cars but you know there's a lot of those on the road and I thought nobody turn their heads and then by the end of it is like a Ferrari and those things are harder to fast shining and everybody's looking at it when you park and you drive and but yeah man that's a that's a longer podcasts until the story of those over many years for me when I think back to we were coming in when I when I got drafted we're coming off twenty three win season and everything we need to be top five defense we have to improve our defense I do indeed offensive drills every day a month and a half before training Camp Darren Ermolai into trying to build and then continue moved Award and we're starting to season. I remember like we were passing out tickets on the streets of Oakland like we passed out tickets on the bar right given free tickets away and who would be busy we won't be able to go and now you know always a good crowd but people were turning down free tickets my rookie you and now I complain about the the price of how to play for tickets when did it start to feel like this is getting big this feeling bigger than than it was when when do you remember sort of like the point that it wasn't like the Acura warriors of the bar handing out tickets warriors anymore I don't know for for him I mean the first year was that set the first championship was not I couldn't I still don't understand it I mean it was overwhelmingly surreal so I didn't feel like we felt I didn't feel mentioned our team then I won't Draymond was Draymond Green we know today and I certainly wasn't nobody knew Kerr came in with some credentials but Steph wasn't Steph play wasn't clay but then in the next year seventy three one year I think that's when it started that's when it began like this is for people to care that much about regular season and the style of play something happened where obviously winning and spring boarding and being even better than the next regular season but I didn't feel it as a player I don't know what was like for me as a player I'm like Bob said the two thousand fifteen season we wanted to find out we were just wrapped up into having fun there was as good a year we would have and there was no expectation on us to win the finals and by the way we met Lebron James in the finals of course like Lebron supposed to win where the new guys on the block and you just enjoy it and it was just surreal like Bob set two thousand sixteen even coming into this season like everyone said oh the cows hurting out of progress who else at this point but these guys were hurting the Asterik was that the asteroid everybody wants to put an asterisk on that one and I remember starting off the seasonal just like wow they're really going to discredit our championship okay and I remember I I can't remember those game nine or eleven we've played the clippers in La and they were like twenty points I didn't play their games and we want and that's what matter of fact it was gave me Levin or third somewhere in there and that's when it was like wow these guys are serious and it went from that to wait how many games in a row three and you walk in the practice and it's on a song Tuesday's ninety media members at practice is when I started to feel different and it's like Whoa some lot going on you lead that charge I think certainly verbally more than anybody that you wanted that bowls record percents because I think when you got a chance to make history you you make history like you don't just give up an opportunity to make history I mean it's like we can play as good as we wanna plan put together as a team want it's not easy to win seventy three games a ton of things got it go right you start talking about health you know how to schedule plays out sometimes you get scheduled losses like you started talking about all of those things and how it really plays out it's not easy to do and I felt like we had a golden opportunity needed to do it and we ended up taking advantage of it but that was definitely something that I thought was very important and really wanted to accomplish how much organization that year Bob did you guys have to talk about are we keeping the foot on the pedal do we want to rest guys do we. It's important to the players let's do it or we've got to think we've got to make decisions that they might not agree with for the longer run how much of that went on is that your went on not as much as you might see and other I mean I only know what we do I've only worked for one team he's the only play for one team you know we've always tried to St is this I try to do this team somebody team my my daughter-in-law pieces you work all day daddy don't you just pick the players there's a lot of gaps you'd fill in but but it's not my team and I didn't play in the NBA but I'd always the way it was easy for me and I think Steve was who am I even though I have this title to tell Draymond Green or anybody you can't go for this record which is in a sense saying don't try to win every game you play you can spend a lot of different ways but you can ask dream on I don't I know there's a narrative that that's why we lost the championship that's I don't think that's why we lost I mean people might say that to make themselves feel better but we get one we got beat fine feel like you get tired winning any championships I didn't ask him I mean they're all exhausting I don't know that that one was more exhausting the cavs were exhausted to game seven I mean they they couldn't make a shot I got one of the best players ever to play on their team he nobody could we all looked and how much I appreciated the level from both teams forget about our team their team like guys just leaving every ounce on floor and ever thought well if we do not played you know not gone for that record we would win this I didn't feel that other people can say whatever they want that's what I thought I don't think that's remotely close to being in truth Everything that needed to go wrong for us to lose their championship went wrong and you know just how to cookie crumbles sometimes and you know you live with those results but if seventy three ways is what costs us their championship we don't get took three one by the way historically you get through one you win so it clearly wasn't the seventy three games a lot of things took place and you got to get it Oh gosh credit no they made the place when they need to make the plays to win the championship but I know for me personally as a player two thousand sixteen wasn't remotely close to the most exhausting run in these five years that we have not even close was it because there are the years that were more mentally taxing than physically it seemed like there were more issues that might have taken more emotionally out of you than playing minutes is that why one hundred percent you think about it from this perspective we are some of the best athletes in the world that trained that way and and you train.

"I give Bob Myers in that front office it's on a credit because basically you had no way to sign a free agent after Kevin Durant decided to bolt and had to Brooklyn so you need to do something and this was the best thing you could do from acquiring a high level talent so to speak and that's what tears all restless he was an all star last season with the Brooklyn nets to average twenty two points per game and I don't feel he's the perfect fit with Steph curry but the one thing you can acknowledge about this deal is it gives this team and asset going forward which they otherwise did not have they didn't have assets to trade off and they also didn't have assets to make moves like they don't have appealing draft picks that another team across the NBA is like yeah let's go we'll trade one of our stars like say for a hypothetical example the warriors were interested in Bradley Beal they don't have anything they could have traded for Bradley Beal without giving up one of their main guys which clearly they're not going to do and now maybe if they do want to make a beat up move down the road and say they're eyeing a guy like Bradley Beal maybe d'angelo Russell as part of that package they say Hey we got this kid twenty three oh point guard he was an all star last year when Klay Thompson has been out of the lineup he's averaging like twenty points for us what do you think it may be the main piece of a package that allows us to acquire Bradley Beal well maybe get a thirteen involved and get some other stuff but the point is the warriors could never make a move like that previous to picking up the Ansel Russell they didn't have that young player they don't have that young player out there that was appealing to other people on the market so that was a shocking thing to me good recovery by the Golden State Warriors to get a player of the Ansel Russell's capability even if you don't like the fit good way to get somebody in there to make you more flexible going forward and if it works out Hey it works out yet an all star guard along with Steph curry if it works out great then you got a nice player for the foreseeable future all right moving on number four number forty was al Horford to Philadelphia I did not see that one coming now remember in the weeks leading up to free agency al Horford opted out of his deal with the Boston Celtics and we were hearing that he had a four year Max contract on the table now he sent a little bit less than that Max contract remember we were hearing like Dallas maybe the clippers we all know the king's offer them a Max contract but we kept hearing this the mystery team everybody was trying to figure out this mystery team and I did not see that TV in the Philadelphia seventy Sixers like this is going back to the nineteen nineties style of basketball where you have a traditional power forward and a traditional five man right not too many teams nowadays play with that type of line up in some teams will start again that way but most teams won't finish a game that way think about all the elite teams in the NBA they usually have one big man on the court surrounded by two four it's in a non power forward right the power forward position is out of vogue in the NBA nowadays you don't really have a power port on your roster the Charles Barkley tonight you don't have that guy anymore.

But in the process, they lost forward, Kevin Durant who went down with an apparent achilles injury in the second quarter the warriors get within three games to two in the series. But head coach Steve Kerr could not completely enjoy it so bizarre feeling that we all have right now, an incredible win and a horrible loss at the same time at this. "That's how important in NBA star is it's very bonds as a pitcher is very bonds getting the pitch and he's pitch every game. And he gets to hit every time. That's that's there's no. There's no synonymous athlete. Short of an individual sport. But in a team sport, no hockey player. They don't even play hug play place. Twenty five twenty six minutes. I've been closest thing in American sports is the hockey goalie who gets like absurdly hot from month in. But, but but does this go, and you know, so yes. But you're right. I think and I haven't heard the hockey one. That's interesting. So why shouldn't those people have that authority? Now. What do you do with it? How you operate it? How do you move through it? What's the right way? I think right now what you're seeing is an awakening amongst the players as to. Wow, I should and can take control of my career because the other thing is players have never been judged more harshly than they are now, but they're also praised probably more than they get both. But in an era where criticism usually lasts and stays with you more than praise. You start seeing that I have to improve my situation, right or wrong. You feel that? And so it's a complicated. Again. I don't it's a good question. What's the right way, which the wrong way? I do know this. I'm not going to defend the position that a star player has the importance that it does in our sport. So so again, I don't know what you do with that. But it is a truism. I think. You've told the story of many times of Andrea would dollars free agency and how stressful it was for you. And Joe lake goes off in Montana with no cellphone reception. And you've got to clear space in all this that and the other thing is the story of DeMarcus cousins free agency literally that your phone rings. And it's a number. You don't have. And it's like, hey, this is boogie you got mid level. What do you think? Well, no, I'm digging was more painful because I just felt no hope that was gonna actually there was more moving parts. That's that's the one that you you were you were sleep deprived considering life. That was. That was one that was GM's that are listening to listen to relate to the the effort you put in when something doesn't happen. It gets. No, no credit. I guess, you know, running the marathon and coming in second. Nobody cares. Running running the marathon and falling maybe following it. Yeah. And actually, nobody even saying, wow, he ran pretty good. They don't know by the way, we'll get back to the store. The Newt the story..

"That's all what is the meeting like. And who is there when you tell Draymond we have to suspend you for a game. That was Steve me dream. And it's it's you know, those are never. But he can't those are never good for anybody. This not fun. Right. But again, no one is relishing delivery. Again. I hate Draymond. Drafted. He's been in the organization for nine years. Eight nine you have history together for sure so this I've had wonderful unbelievable moments with him that one of them. No, not for any of us. But you know, you do what you can. And I think one thing that I try and say you're Steve nobody's infallible in any of this stuff me. I'm gonna make mistake. You view it as a guy made a mistake. What's the right punishment that I don't know you do the best? You can. So it was three and do it you move on and was one game. And then go from there. Did he object to be take it? Okay. I mean, he understood me like Draymond is a guy that runs. I think the thing I love the most about him is he wants to win so bad that he wanted to play. Of course, he didn't want to you're taking away a game from him. Nobody. That's a competitive guy's gonna say. Sure sounds good. Thanks a lot. So no he wanted to play. But again, he handled it I think great and then he moved forward. Obviously you're concerned about the possibility of Katie leaving as you would for any star free agent leaving. Let's not go there quite yet. When the leak thinks about okay what's going to happen in the playoffs. So it's going to happen when the warriors really gear up and start trying. What is what is our hope? Now, let's not take for granted you're gonna game seven last year. So at that part of that is like there was hope last year there was so that you could be beaten the hope that I hear from from coaches and executives around the league is. Kevin's free agency is hovering over that team. Whether they like it or not what's going to happen if someone punches them in the face in the first three games of a series. What's going to happen? If they're suddenly down to one and the world is falling apart with that hovering over their head with maybe players on the team wondering just wondering does he have half a foot out the door a foot out the door, Ken they like to win a title, your you need. Now some years like two years ago. You didn't have any adversity last year. Did you dare may be a moment where you need everyone to look at each other and say we are coming together and rising above it. Now, everyone come together. Now, are you worried that that that Katy thing is going to make it harder for you to come together in a moment. Like that. I don't I I mean, I worry about everything all the time. But that specific thing. No. I think we will in that moment, I'm betting on our character. And I understand why the league would bet on they're not betting hoping they're hoping and they should I mean, that's I hoping our competitors. Don't put together in a moment of adversity the thing. That's interesting about that is last year in game six and seven everybody thought Steve against Houston that we were downtown. I think both games that have one at home one on the road everybody and Steve would admit this. There was no Knute Rockne halftime speech that got our team back on the right track. And literally if you're intuitive at all you'd walk into the locker room, and you look around and say, what am I witnesses here? What is going on what I saw and half time at both those games was a connected team. And there wasn't. You know, why it was because nobody was playing nobody was giving up. Nobody was letting go of the rope. Nobody was blaming anybody else. And that's that's really all I know of art versity. And so I believe in it again, and again and again because deep down I think our team Kevin all our players. Do love basketball do love to win hate to lose. And at the end of in those tough moments..

Could Draymond Green vs. Kevin Durant make the Warriors stronger?

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Could Draymond green versus Kevin Durant. Make the warrior stronger, Draymond green might have thrown his team into momentary crisis this week. But he also threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the league on Thursday after a team shoot around in Houston. If you're one of those other twenty nine teams in the league, you've gotta beat us. Green said in his first statement since being suspended for his argument with Kevin Durant. We not going to beat us. We're going to continue to do what we do. If you think you saw something before good luck with us. Now, we're not going to crumble off of an argument any may be right because the fairytale that the warriors have been living for the past few years is made up of living breathing ego driven players who are individually worth GDP of small countries. So of course, there are behind the scenes disputes and clashes this drama may have opened a much-needed steam valve may have released. Some of the pressure may have put everyone's cards on the table instead of having questions of free agency and player surpremacy lurking. In the background. This may make everyone take a hard look at themselves. Do we wanna be individual countries? Or do we want to show strength in numbers? Just us. This whole week has had the feeling of a past the area dispute Joe Montana versus DVR with a hint of adolescent, girl. Twilight mania team Jacob or team Edward do. We have to pick sides do the teammates have to pick sides. Probably not the members of the team have been living with these personalities and issues for longer than they've been exposed publicly the ability of green and Durant to walk into practice together on Thursday, talk fist-bump shoot together and play together against the rockets. Doesn't mean this is over not by a long shot. Green has reportedly appealed his fine. His harsh punishment this week by Steve Kerr and general manager. Bob Myers suspended one game without pay may continue to not him. Why was he punished so severely by leaders who have gone out of their way to have his back? It leads one to believe that Monday nights. Outburst wasn't an isolated incident. And that green has been pushing the envelope for awhile. Maybe even been warned repeatedly the encored incident that unleash this storm wasn't particularly noteworthy green was in the right on the court Duran looked selfish on the court. But it was the word set on the bench that revealed the Fisher. It's no secret. I'm emotional. Green said I wear my emotions on my sleeve. Sometimes it gets the best of me, and it doesn't work in my favor. But I live with that because works to the good more as my resume shows though, he vowed not to change on Thursday. Green was far more open and conciliatory in his comments than Durant was the other night. Durant may continue to carry a grudge. That's something. He's pretty good at basketball teams are studies and collective psychology. And the warriors have always had potentially combustible elements. Durant notoriously has thin skin. Green is an expert at finding the thinnest part of anyone skin to see if he can Pierce it. Both men are elite grudge holders and go out of their way to find things to feel. Victimized about to fuel them. I've had my own standoff with green I didn't understand why I was being frozen out. He was angry over something. I wrote and our relationship was initially rectified through a sitdown orchestrated by a warriors employee emotional and intense green is a warrior through and through a combination player assistant, general manager, welcome wagon Durant. In contrast is aloof. He is both by his arrival through free agency and his personality. More of an outsider green probably more than anyone else on the team has been irritated by the sense. That Durant is holding teams future hostage to his pending free agency. I've read a lot is this the end of the run did I ruin it. Or did I force Kevin to leave green said at the end of the day, whatever Kevin decides to do what clay decides we had great years together. I support everyone wholeheartedly one hundred percent as a man as a human being you've got the right to do what you wanna do with your life. Yes. That was the past tense. We had great years. Together. So maybe Durant does leave and maybe green will alternately be part of the reason. But maybe as most people are beginning to assume Durant was going to leave anyway. And this incident just got the issue out in the open put it on the dinner table where the family can deal with it. But this season isn't the past tense. It's the present. And maybe green is right instead of being gleeful that the warriors are in crisis. Maybe the rest of the league has to be even more worried about them now and Killian is a San Francisco Chronicle columnist Email a Killian SF chronicle dot com Twitter at an Killian.

"Just based on its it's been moved up two weeks from the last thursday in in february in its in its in the middle of one games are being played in the past usually how work than in the past is that you had the allstar weekend as a buffer you're done playing games on wednesday you you're not playing until you know the following wednesday or in some cases thursday you have your meetings on sunday monday tuesday there is nobody in the office really just your your your front office in you're able to kind of a good lay laid down the the path that you want to go in you have multiple contained in she's on the table for what you wanna do you don't you can't always just think about it short term you have to look at longterm you have to have all your medical lined up that means all your paperwork if there is a deal to be place you have to have all your insurance pit worked ready ready to go you have to have your owner basically on speed dial in case something pops up in it is it is chaotic is a chaotic in golden state with bob myers in this is of chaotic for our in san antonio no i don't think so but those teams are still certainly taking phone calls in figuring out of there is maybe some trimming around around the edges and three o'clock is the deadline will be what has to happen is that and i go back to the garnett trading in two thousand fifteen because that was as close as of a deal that never got done is is that although it's at a three pm deadline you better be on the phone with in that case the timberwolves ended in the nba office and have already shared all your your paperwork and have an agreement in principle that that you are will do that deal and then the trade called happens dow down the road could happen at six o'clock at night but it is i mean it is chaos you've got i think this year's challenging to oceans because there could be some reactionary trades because if you have lost games going into thursday if you've lost four games if you're a team that's hanging on.

"Incredible is a little bit of an overreach but some fun moments from yesterday's parade and there are no secrets that i'm a big bob myers fan i just love this guy he's bright he's engage gene he's charming he's humble did and it would be easy to get up and flex and do the crab you know what i mean everybody knows the crap pose or to get up there and if he had a i don't know if you had the dream on a you're doing the whole kogan thing right where you have one arm it's kind of the same bolt thing nobody would have blamed him if he did that if he had the panache and the hubris of a lot of nba players 'cause that's part of what makes them graders they just consider themselves to be superheroes but bob myers to close as he got was wearing here the belt buckle going in the tight trousers in the cool leather elven shoes but i'm just i love everything about bob myers and what he did was he got up a there and just kind of enunciated with no notes a blurb on each of the warriors and steve kerr cetera it was phenomenal the ease like bob fitzgerald bob myers the easa which he expressed his passion love for each individual on that stage it was dynamite my particular favorite to favorites in was how he gave some love to david west and west being this big macho man and intimidating man it looks like his look i i can't prove his lip was quivering but a definitely look like his eyes were watering up a little bit and it's kinda fun to think of these guys on these thirteen year fourteen year journeys and what must be going through their minds and those moments the it pro they probably raced through their entire lives up to that point in i don't know how long they're on the stage in our something like that maybe longer but even in the minute bob myers was talking about david west and looking at him i bet shaves just a light speed man hyperspace speed and what an eat feeling that must be to work your home oh live to achieve something and inhabit crystallized in one.
