"And that Herbert is the most gifted football player ever. I ended up just giving up in the argument mistakenly told him that he was too ignorant to argue with. He didn't seem too upset at the time. That's a bad sign. Nothing happened. Him and his buddies got their sandwiches and walked out as me and my two friends were walking out. These guys are waiting for us. We end up getting our asses kicked pretty badly. So bad that one of my friends who plays college basketball is out for two months with a broken wrist. He has yet to speak to me since that night despite my multiple attempts to contact him in most cases. I feel like someone would get over this, especially since I feel like I didn't do anything to warrant a fight. But this is different. This guy takes everything way too seriously and he's the guy in the group who can't take a joke. I'm afraid he's not going to get over this for at least an extended amount of time. Is there any other way I can go about this? Thanks. Well, you screwed up. You have to do an argument. Guys are drinking. You know, I could say don't do this, but when you're drinking it's last call and you're waiting on subs, shit happens. So I'm not going to be a moralist here with this. Because I get it. All right, been there. The you know, I'll never understand, but again, I have a really, really slanted I don't know, skewed view of this stuff. When I hear people making dumb sports points, I do not get in the conversation. I don't. But again, I didn't have a career when I was 28 for a sub either. So I maybe I would have been pissed about this. I don't know. So the fact that those guys didn't say anything to you and then waited for you, probably you should have known, like, oh, maybe these guys like to fight, and they're so mad about this that you knew you knew your chances weren't great. They didn't yell and keep it going to show off and stick the chest out and all that kind of stuff and the sub shop. The fact they were like, no, let's just grab ourselves. They may even eat in their subs and then kick your ass, which sucks on top everything else. So the question I have for you here as far as trying to fix this relationship here with your buddy. Who should rightfully be pissed? Do you do this all the time? Because if you do it all the time, that's what this is about. If this is a complete one off and you're not a one 60 guy mouth and off the people about stupid arguments, then you shouldn't feel bad about it. But if you do do all this all the time, then you should feel nice. What's that? You said, dude. You said it twice. Yep. That's right,.

"Feel. His feel isn't bad. He's not going to get tennis since the game most likely. But he sees the open guy knows how to swing the ball. His defense is way underrated, I thought he can guard one through 5 almost, which makes him extremely valuable and this kind of modern MBA. And his athleticism, speed footwork, you mentioned kind of that baseline shot. His post work, which is something that we'll see as we evolve very few guys can post up, but in the switching NBA, could he punish a small if you throw it on him? He's pretty good at that. Maybe one of the best on our team at that. But it's 19 years old. I mean, literally turn 19 two months ago. On October. So this guy was you probably should be a freshman in college right now. I mean, most guys that were drafted around and that are a year older than the top 5 top 6. So we think at the draft at the top, when you build a team, the difference between a star and a role player, the teams that win or a great, it's your best players that differentiate you. You can't ever win with a bunch of role players. And I'm not talking about this draft or any other player in particular, but our beliefs, you have to take swings. On guys that could become stars at the top. And you might get right, make it wrong. But if you get it right, and all of a sudden, three, four, 5 years down the road, you have an all star, right? Or in all NBA guy. That is so hard to find that you have to try. Problem is now we're drafting 19 year olds that have played limited games. You don't really know who they are work ethic wise. You and I at 19, we didn't have any, we were probably a mess, to be honest. Even though who we were, our work ethic, how we would deal with money, success, pressure, so that's the hardest thing we do. It's not necessarily watching their physical abilities, it's seeing what they'll become mentally. I think the biggest challenge. But what we saw in kuminga was great upset is a great kid. And on our team, he's just not going to get the same run. But, you know, it's coming. If you watched him behind the scenes and saw him and that seemed as much as we would, you would probably be I'm not trying to sell them, but I think it's gonna be a really good player. No, I am not taking it that way 'cause I think you said something really smart about jaylen Brown is that when I talk to the Celtics after the fact about jaylen, you know, just to be at the combine and you run into somebody and be like, hey, what'd you see with jaylen? Because it was pretty messy at Cal. And it's a lot of the same things that you're saying about can make it not that they're the same profile of player, but it's the profile of the pick of like, hey, kind of where you're at in the draft, looking at the other options around it. Physically, does this guy project? If he figures the basketball part of it, right, is like a really, really special kind of, again, movement is a word I use a little bit too much, but I get it. I get the similarities there of like, this guy has a chance though because he fits some of this profile stuff that we'd like. I don't want to say on that anymore because I want to finish with this one. You said something at the top that I thought was really interesting, so I wanted to circle back to it. You're putting together this legendary run, finals 5 straight years, and he said he didn't really enjoy it. How do you enjoy it now in comparison to when you were winning all the time and you somehow weren't enjoying it? What have you done for yourself? I'm not sitting on succeeding. I'm trying. You know, probably being a little older and I'm old, but looking back, it's kind of like you get to do, maybe this is a bad example, but we always talk about it. If I could go back to my senior year of high school, you know, you look back and I wouldn't have worried so much. I would have just enjoyed it more. Look around. I think when we went to our first finals, I called Sam presti, and I said, Denny, I called a few people called Mitch, called Pat Riley and I called samus and any advice, and they all had very different guys. So they all had different advice. Pat was mostly about how to win..

"I think until about 6, 7 years into his career, because he had the four year rookie scale and then a four year extension, I think so 8 years, I think for 8 years, step three, I'd have to check was not the highest paid player on the team. So going through all that, not a word of complaint. And that's who he is. And then, believing in the organization. And it's a good story of perseverance. I think that's what a lot of people lack these days is getting through a situation, right? Everything Steph Curry walks in the league and warriors are great. We were not great for anything but great. The brand of the organization was awful. A lot of people didn't know where Golden State was. This guy showed up and was part of the solution. And everything he has received in the last everybody years he's played. He's earned. So that's my favorite part of him because it's rare that someone that doesn't get what they deserve in a contract or maybe goes somewhere they don't want to go or has to kind of wait on an organization to catch up to the premier organizations that they do it with humility and grace and he did all that. So to see him do what he's done it's almost the story of how things should go for a guy like that. When you evaluate players like you do the draft NBA free agency and that kind of stuff. I can imagine with your background, you watch a player and you see them in a vacuum. But then because you have Steph and his gravity on offense and just, you know, there's still every night I watch you guys play. They'll be moments where I laugh. I just laugh, see how a team freaks out on a cut. And he has nothing to do with what's going on. How much does death influence the way you evaluate a player or press differently saying, okay, this is who he is, but with us because of Steph, this is who we will be. Yeah, Ryan, that's a constant work in progress to figure that out. Initially, we thought 8, 9 years ago, let's put him with a big guard. That can handle. And that's why we like big a dollar. That's why we wanted livingstone before we got livingstone. We try to sign him, and then we eventually did sign him. We like the idea of letting Steph play off the ball. And on the ball, he does both. But finding guys that could maximize his ability off the ball that we're big and could defend and play and make plays and so we got that part I think right in hindsight. But as we've matured and grown and clay came along and draymond became what he is almost like a point guard for us, it's a constant evolution, the league has changed. I mean, Steph now, what he averages 13 threes a game. People were like, thought he was crazy. He did that 5 years. Just 5 years ago. We talked for the year. I said, Steph analytically, our guy say should shoot 15 threes a game. He started laughing. And I said, I know you can laugh, and I'm not saying you need to do that, but that is most efficient way for us to play. That's insane, right? And I know the league had shifted when Steph three or four years ago, I think he attempted 13 or 14 and nobody said anything. And then I knew at that point, this is just what it is. So now you've got a guy like you talk about gravity that it can extend and they're gonna blitz every time blitzing is a kind of the NBA parlance for double team off the pick and roll. Who can play out of that? So you're basically playing four on three, a lot of times with step on the floor. When the team takes them out of the play. So then it becomes if you know basketball, then you gotta make some decisions. It's four on three. How do you play out of that? And that's where we tried to get guys that felt the game a little bit could pass to move and screen. But we're not, I think a lot of teams want those guys right? We're strapped with how much we can spend and you want to also find the right mix of guys young and old, but we're not stuff makes it a heck of a lot easier because he almost immediately buys by himself gives you a good office. So then it's about building a good defense, maximizing that offense. The one time about 5, 6 years ago, I played basketball with Steph, they needed a guy maybe 6 7 8 years ago. The thing I'll tell you about what he does from personal experience. I'm not an NBA player by any stretch. I was on the other team. I wasn't on his team. And I remember feeling like on defense that this is really uncomfortable. And I wasn't even guarding. And the reason why it was uncomfortable is because he extends you out so far of what is comfortable, he puts you and makes you feel as a defender vulnerable because you've got one eye on this guy that can shoot from anywhere and he's finishing around the rim is very underrated. So even when he got to the paint, people think they can block his shot and it's easy to do. It's really hard. Because left hand right hand floaters, all kinds of different weapons around the rim. Any stronger people think. But he used the word gravity is the right word. I think he used it what he does as far as a poll, as far as a magnet takes everybody out of position and that's why he's so good and makes her off and stood. What's the unfiltered bob Myers take when you hear the guys from the 90s saying Steph wouldn't be able to handle it? Unfiltered.

"Golden State's been one of the biggest stories and Steph Curry certainly at the center of that with the record breaking chase this past week and bob Myers, general manager of the warriors, good enough to spend some time with us. Okay, so there's a lot of stuff I want to get to here, bob. But what was Steph week like for you? Because it was fun to see everybody care about this record, which I wasn't really used to anymore in sports, but I know you traveled up to New York for it. He was very honest about what it meant to him. What was his life for you for somebody who watched this on? You know, I don't know how you look at these things. We all look at everything differently, which is our own prerogative, but I'm not a huge kind of record guy. I mean, I just we all put our own importance on these things. So as we led into it, Ryan, I was kind of like, do I need to be there when this happens? And I kind of floated that to some peers. And they're kind of like, yeah. I said, I said, I don't know if you'll care. And they said, well, don't you care? And I said, yeah, I care, but I mean, it's not winning a championship, and it's not, you know, he'll have his family, you know, he's not gonna. And as I started thinking about it more, I realized that it is a big moment. And I don't do well at kind of celebrating the big moments. So I tried to kind of ten years on the job. I tried to approach this scene. I'm gonna enjoy this season, no matter what happens, because I didn't. I'm not speaking for the organization. I'm speaking for myself, even as great as we were in those years. I did not enjoy it as much as I should have. So I kind of am trying and was trying to say, I'm going to change that. So this was part of me going, you know what, this is cool. This guy's going to set a record. In an MBA, besides winning a championship, maybe MVPs and.

I i've not heard tentatively that that was the purpose behind what he said and there remains the possibility that it was simply. I wanna clear my name. And i wanna do something. That's explosive on my first podcast as i prepare myself for my post my post playing career. i do. I will tell you that it did not sit well at all with the warriors and it shouldn't that from either. Yeah from either one of them and it it. It does undermine their authority and moving forward trying to trying to put this team together.

Thompson has torn Achilles tendon, expected to miss season

"So it's the injury everybody's talking about but with clay sadly you gotta specify which injury you're talking about. Are you talking about the one in game. Six of the twenty nine thousand finals. The last time we saw him play a game or the one suffered earlier in the week. Which is an achilles tendon. Tear he is now out. It could be if the calendars right two and a half years between games. We're looking forward to having him back at the start of the twenty twenty one. Twenty two season knick. Fidel has been all over the warriors for years and he joins us on the shell. Pennzoil performance line nick. Good morning first thing. Just the response in and around the organization on the news zubin. Everybody's just depressed excited leading into the draft. And in the fact that wiseman was there at number two he was number one on their board and and they were just really looking forward to having steph klay draymond and then plugging in wiseman and seeing what we can give them and then they range of emotions in those couple of hours before the draft and then after the draft they really couldn't even celebrate. Everybody was so sad about clay. I mean he is the guy behind the scenes with all the star power in that locker room that sets the tone for everybody else. And that's why kerr and all those players they love it and so to know that he's going to be out again for another year which just crushing for. Everybody involved nikki. Give us an insight. Into how bob myers and company dealt with the news of klay thompson literally hours before the nba draft that make their decision challenging more challenging looking at other guys like lamelo ball considering he was going to be available. Jay bob address that right afterwards instead. Look wiseman was our guy if he was there we were taken him and obviously if the emotions involved right before the big or unprecedented we. We really never seen anything like it. Before where a star player who has won titles in an organization gets another serious injury right before you gotta make a huge selection for your future but all along when you talk to people in the organization they love what wise men could give them and they're confident that once he gets into their system playing and learning alongside draymond that he can be maybe that bridge or potentially down the line Tracey's nobody knows for sure but wiseman all along was their guy in. I don't think anything that happened with. Clay change to focus when he was number two

I think that I looked at my husband halfway through, and I thought I said, I said that he died. I mean I thought the way he was talking that, that something. Yes. Something really horrible happened something really, really horrible happened in the world of Basque or chain. It was a tragedy in the minds of Kevin Durant in the minds of rich climate. And I think he's got to have some respect for that, that, that a player who had an option to sit it out for his own goodwill said you know what I'm going to strap it up for my teammates, and for this title and crapped out, and it's not gonna it probably not going to cost him but it may change the art know the whole arc of his career and Bob Myers is so as an agent and, you know, so many times you're putting your your, you know, the your clients, hands or your careers in your hand in your hands, I'm sure he feels responsible and I'm sure it was a, a really tough moment. But that tells you what he's all about Jane, you know, if I had to bet on the future Durant, he's going to be just fine. This is a momentary through his hard work, and his great talent. And the fact that somebody's going to give him thirty million dollars to, to rehab. Feel bad for a few days. But in the end this guy is gonna come out a winner. That's, that's my guess full for him. "The second part was how in the short span of time. Do I get with Steve trying to get in touch with Steph? Kevin Draymond Andrea. And it was that was the best part of the story hearing all their reaction because after I talked to Marcus, I knew that this thing was getting set in motion here and was gonna either happen that day or probably not. So Steve was driving up from San Diego to L A to see as I was in LA to see his mom, his mom lives in LA. So so I got into Steve I said, Steve, I only have one minute. And he said what's up? I said I'm going to tell you a name. I hang up, and I said think about it on your drive three hour drive Sinica. And I said so that will give you enough time. He said what I said Marcus because I gotta go. I know. That's what I what what I saw call you two hours. So that's probably an interesting way to do it because I didn't want me convincing him try. I said you talk you think about it by yourself in the car for two hours and come back to me with whatever it is that you've got without me, pushing you without anybody pushing you, and I I didn't know what Steve would process in those two hours. I didn't know what our players would process. I didn't know for Joe late owner lake of in Montana. Five million is twenty million because our tax Bill, so he's got to believe in this too. But I know we don't have a ton of going through the calls because Steph was having a baby literally that day about the terrain Mon was somewhere in Greece. Or he was not US. He was definitely not on our time zone. Klay was on a plane back from China. The best part about clay's. He's the only guy didn't talk to. But he's the only thing I didn't need to talk. I mean because because everybody said well. Clayton care who's on our team. He doesn't know who we have who's on a team. Now who you want to say, but Steph was fascinating. Because and then Andre was great. But that's the part of the white stuff. Fascinating. Because these guys are so embracing you get to see in that moment. Steph was like, yeah, man. You kidding me? But but he was having a baby that did. But he was at the hospital, which is cute and so just to interact with him from that position. I could see Andre playing a trick on you know. Andre was great Andres, really smart, as you know. That's what I'm saying. I could see him like object whole Andrei and I asked him, and he started laughing, and he goes, why are you call? Why are you asking me? Why are you asking me like he almost made me feel like an idiot, which is Andres one of his best things that he doesn't life? Unfortunately, lands Beck on me sometimes, but he was kind of like. It's almost like don't ask me stupid things..

"I never get tired of reading. I will read I will read one hundred of them are the people who cheat at the thought who got in a cab. I lump those guys I love when you're winning. I think that's fascinating. Because even if it worked. What did you get out of that? What you know, he's like robbing a Bank you won the marathon and said anyway, so, but I I haven't gone back and read everything, but it seems like you literally just got a phone call. It was like, oh, okay. The truth was in free agency. There's all these variables and high probability low probability things you look at it. And our thought was we have a we have a taxpayer mid level, which is people listening. It's not a lot. It's five million dollars, which is a lot. But not a lot for a good NBA free agent. So we had an idea of maybe somebody'll fall through the cracks not really thinking, it would be a guy like DeMarcus that was our position. I believe you had some other targets all. The board or. We weren't really optimistic on so his agent. Jaren Kennett called me that morning pretty early. And I think he called twice, and I was looking at it think anyone in agent calls usually know who they're working with or what it's about. And so I call them back, and we've been through all these machinations of agents may be calling and saying could you get to ten million somehow is the only way you can get the fifteen if you move this guy, and so I've been exhausting that. And I was a little bit fatigued. And so my knee-jerk response at that point was look if we're talking about anything more than the middle that we can't do it. We don't want to do it. We don't see a way to do it. So let's show. Good luck. And do some prepared that speech for Jaren. And his this is when I knew it was real he said, we know we know how much money you have. And I hit them back again. I said, no, no, it's not the mid level. It's the tab. But baby, it's not the real not not. No, no, no. We know. And the way he said that in the repentiti that he replied was kind of made me think. Wow. Okay. Okay. But I still didn't have full confidence that it. Would get there because a lot of times agents like they're smart. They cover their bases worst case scenario, right? We got this with awards. When you see a player decline a player option? You know that there's something that they can fall back on. But then I thought this is Jared just kind of planned skipping the league. So we could go to the markets and say look if in a week or two got nothin'. The warriors are kind of there, and how long it'll be there. But then he said, would you talk to Marcus? And I said you wanna talk does. He know what we had. Yeah. He knows how much money so then DeMarcus called with Jerry on the phone, and we started talking tonight. I still didn't quite have a ton of belief that it was real real. But it was fine. We weren't really doing anything else. And so I got on the phone and talk a little bit. And I said, and I met him a couple times I said, what do you want? And he said I just want to play in the rights that you want to find the right situation. And I said, well, look, I will tell you this. It's a travesty. You haven't played in the playoffs yet you need to play in the playoffs. And I said whether that's with us or anywhere. Because I think you're game the physicality. Needing needing to get close to the basket on certain positions to score to get the free throw. And I said I think your game. We're really transit. And I said so anywhere you come back and said I want to send with guns. And so then I thought okay, I've heard it. I don't know. How else I can hear this missed the hit me right between the eyes. So the complexity of that wasn't the DeMarcus was first finding out. Did he really want it? Right..

"That's how important in NBA star is it's very bonds as a pitcher is very bonds getting the pitch and he's pitch every game. And he gets to hit every time. That's that's there's no. There's no synonymous athlete. Short of an individual sport. But in a team sport, no hockey player. They don't even play hug play place. Twenty five twenty six minutes. I've been closest thing in American sports is the hockey goalie who gets like absurdly hot from month in. But, but but does this go, and you know, so yes. But you're right. I think and I haven't heard the hockey one. That's interesting. So why shouldn't those people have that authority? Now. What do you do with it? How you operate it? How do you move through it? What's the right way? I think right now what you're seeing is an awakening amongst the players as to. Wow, I should and can take control of my career because the other thing is players have never been judged more harshly than they are now, but they're also praised probably more than they get both. But in an era where criticism usually lasts and stays with you more than praise. You start seeing that I have to improve my situation, right or wrong. You feel that? And so it's a complicated. Again. I don't it's a good question. What's the right way, which the wrong way? I do know this. I'm not going to defend the position that a star player has the importance that it does in our sport. So so again, I don't know what you do with that. But it is a truism. I think. You've told the story of many times of Andrea would dollars free agency and how stressful it was for you. And Joe lake goes off in Montana with no cellphone reception. And you've got to clear space in all this that and the other thing is the story of DeMarcus cousins free agency literally that your phone rings. And it's a number. You don't have. And it's like, hey, this is boogie you got mid level. What do you think? Well, no, I'm digging was more painful because I just felt no hope that was gonna actually there was more moving parts. That's that's the one that you you were you were sleep deprived considering life. That was. That was one that was GM's that are listening to listen to relate to the the effort you put in when something doesn't happen. It gets. No, no credit. I guess, you know, running the marathon and coming in second. Nobody cares. Running running the marathon and falling maybe following it. Yeah. And actually, nobody even saying, wow, he ran pretty good. They don't know by the way, we'll get back to the store. The Newt the story..

"Now, let's be careful because it's hampering, Katie. You are a president of basketball perations, but also a former agent so you come at this from a different perspective. Just no names. What do you think of this world? We're living in now where players with multiple years left on their contracts. We this is going to be the topic to your when Adam silver talks to Bill Simmons in a minute start agitating for trades. And I don't even like the word agitate because it sounds pejorative. I start. Informing their teams eight you might wanna start looking around 'cause I don't want to be here anymore. Like two teams. Like what you got a year and a half left on your contract you sign this contract. It's a very it makes people mad on a visceral level, but it's very complex issue. Not and one basic reason why is it's going to be better for team x that they got something for player. Why then have him leave for nothing? There is a benefit to the team as uncomfortable as it is. But it does makes people viscerally angry, and you were on that side. Not seeing you you had one of those situations, but you are an agent. But now you run a team just as you've seen all this unfold with Kawhi kyri AD down the line. Don't name any names. Bob, didn't sandy names. I did. What are your thoughts? Bench. Just like as the league is evolving. Like what kind of league? Are we going to be a good question? And it's fascinating to watch things evolve. And I think the takeaway there's a few takeaways, but the first one would be those a reason why there's a visceral reaction because the power of an NBA players never been greater, and I'm not sure it's it's always probably been this. Great. But there's a recognition of it amongst the players, and maybe fans and media and GM's it's coaches in one of the ripple effects of shortening the conscious which is what the owners all wanted to protect them from themselves. You're right in that capacity. But I would argue let's say I signed Zach Lowe, he's the best one of the best five players in the NBA. I just signed you to a seven year contract. You the best part on my team two years in. I notice you look a little disinterested out there. We're losing. We've lost three or four in a row. I go definitely got out of shape. Definitely whatever you're doing. It's not working for you. Zac, what's going on? And you go. I don't wanna talk about Zac what's going on. So then that offseason you go. I exit interview I go, what did you think of the year? And you I don't know if it's gonna work for me. I what do you mean you got five years left in her deal? And we asked this whatever. And so then we go into next season. And then finally reaches a point where you walk into my office. And you listen. I don't wanna be your anymore. Don't I have to do something about that? Because you've basically as the most important person toward success on the court have told me, you're not interested in being in the position Yorio, whether you have five years left or one or whatever you probably still get moved. Right. So you're talking about the contracts. I'm not saying it's not nothing interested in a game of chicken doesn't the person with most leverage usually win. Usually in a player. Not it's not right or wrong. It just is the most important person in our sport in a sport where the best player could touch the ball. Oftentimes as many times as they want as a coach can get up certain player thirty shots, which he should have should it's the only thing I can come up with his Tom Brady is the middle linebacker. So he's calling every defensive set gets to play every down..

"I don't know what it's like to not be able to walk down the street. I don't know what it's like to have how many thousands of hundred thousand people following my Twitter feed or I have no idea what it's like to play an NBA game and have ten microphones asking me. And I use this. Sample. What if you had your worst day at work, and you screwed up at the end of the day. You're tired. You're getting on the subway. And you're whatever you're doing about to go home ten microphones in your face. Zach. What were you thinking at ten o'clock when you posted that story, and you didn't even consider the source? And you go you already know you screwed up, and then and then you go and now I got to answer the question. Nobody likes I told you. So I told my wife that whenever I make a mistake. I know I got it got it got it. And then you're a little bit sick. And you're a little bit. You got other stuff going, and then you go I don't want to deal with this right now. So who am I to judge? Whether it's Kevin I can't I think if anybody's listening the complexity of the lives of a superstar NBA player, you cannot understand it. You can judge it all you want, but your life, and what they have to go through and sure there's money. But after that, there's a difficult thing to having to perform this isn't. The these guys have to go out and produce every night or every night they play and they're expected to do that expected to make every shot. If you're superstar expected to answer every question perfectly win every game. So I'm fully supportive guy. Whether it's Kevin or any other player in the league that says. I hit man like I just need a break. And who am I to judge win that shooter shouldn't be so in a situation like that? I might say, hey, how how how are you doing in your life right rather than you need to go out and talk to the media a situation. And he's like how can you sit here and understand anything about what I'm going through? And to be honest at so many levels. I can't at so many levels of an NBA player. I cannot fathom especially a modern player because modern superstar I have no idea what it's.

"You fall back on those things. So I'm confident that if we face it Versi, I'm sure we will face in the regular season. We've already faced them like you've mentioned what we face it in the playoffs. That's what makes winning a championship. So great is overcoming some of that. I mean, even the years we want it down to one going to Memphis. Everybody questioning Steve him changing the lineup in that year. We want to go. They get outta. Yeah. We lost games losing game. Seven at home is adversity last year with. I was the only year we may not have had some was right. I didn't. Probably not a lot of adverse to be on. I'm trying to think of the regular season. I guess was Steph heard it all and that was heard I think at the beginning of that. No. I don't remember. I don't know. But last year. Yeah. And I'm sure we'll have some this year. So understand why by people might ask that question. I believe in our team top to bottom that we persevere in those situations. I think he told me after game seven you did tell me after game seven of that Houston series, Katie approached you on the plane and said, I feel really part of the team now or something like that. Right. And I think. Bolster any relationship you need to go through difficult things friendships marriages teams if everything's always blissful. You don't really know who anybody is. I think if in life all it is is success. How do I know what you're like if we're for playing doubles tennis? And we win every match. I know what you're like we just lost at Wimbledon in the. Iraq. It is hitting the ground and. Poorest. But here's the thing. And here's the thing. Let's say let's say my serve was awful. Do you come off the game off off the court and go Bob, and it's just you and I know locker room, and you go you. You cost us never. But I don't I don't think you would. But there's people that do. But I don't know that until we have that moment where I can say I walk out of that. We just lost my Milton, and you go, you know, what I should have. I missed that volley, and I go but Zack I lost. All my serves in the final set, and you go. Yeah. But if I would have made that volley. That's a good relationship. Right. That's good happens happens. Yeah. The bad served a so my point is the most important thing. I think on any team our team is how do you lose not? How do you win? How do you tackle adversity? How do you persevere through it? And then beating Houston was that was an unbelievable series. I mean, they played fantastic. But when you walk out of that having been pushed to the limit you can look at each other and go. Wow. What an unbelievable shared experience. We now have behind us. What he's not. This is my last Kevin question eyebrows. When he's not talking to the media for eight days, it was it was straight. Like from the outside. I wasn't around you guys at all during those eight days. It was just like why was happening. Did anyone sit down and talk to him and be like, hey, can you? You're just like there's tension burgling up because you're not talking. Maybe you wanna talk that was their conversations happening about it. I talked to him and just said asked him, I didn't tell him. I think he's a grown, man. My my belief is not to tell anybody. That's a man what to do or not to do. But I'm always talking to him. And I said what what are you thinking? So we had that conversation. But I think the thing that we miss even me I have no idea, I'm around whatever you wanna call them. Celebrities. These people that are on our team or in the NBA that have grown up and live in a world that I'm unaware of..

"That's all what is the meeting like. And who is there when you tell Draymond we have to suspend you for a game. That was Steve me dream. And it's it's you know, those are never. But he can't those are never good for anybody. This not fun. Right. But again, no one is relishing delivery. Again. I hate Draymond. Drafted. He's been in the organization for nine years. Eight nine you have history together for sure so this I've had wonderful unbelievable moments with him that one of them. No, not for any of us. But you know, you do what you can. And I think one thing that I try and say you're Steve nobody's infallible in any of this stuff me. I'm gonna make mistake. You view it as a guy made a mistake. What's the right punishment that I don't know you do the best? You can. So it was three and do it you move on and was one game. And then go from there. Did he object to be take it? Okay. I mean, he understood me like Draymond is a guy that runs. I think the thing I love the most about him is he wants to win so bad that he wanted to play. Of course, he didn't want to you're taking away a game from him. Nobody. That's a competitive guy's gonna say. Sure sounds good. Thanks a lot. So no he wanted to play. But again, he handled it I think great and then he moved forward. Obviously you're concerned about the possibility of Katie leaving as you would for any star free agent leaving. Let's not go there quite yet. When the leak thinks about okay what's going to happen in the playoffs. So it's going to happen when the warriors really gear up and start trying. What is what is our hope? Now, let's not take for granted you're gonna game seven last year. So at that part of that is like there was hope last year there was so that you could be beaten the hope that I hear from from coaches and executives around the league is. Kevin's free agency is hovering over that team. Whether they like it or not what's going to happen if someone punches them in the face in the first three games of a series. What's going to happen? If they're suddenly down to one and the world is falling apart with that hovering over their head with maybe players on the team wondering just wondering does he have half a foot out the door a foot out the door, Ken they like to win a title, your you need. Now some years like two years ago. You didn't have any adversity last year. Did you dare may be a moment where you need everyone to look at each other and say we are coming together and rising above it. Now, everyone come together. Now, are you worried that that that Katy thing is going to make it harder for you to come together in a moment. Like that. I don't I I mean, I worry about everything all the time. But that specific thing. No. I think we will in that moment, I'm betting on our character. And I understand why the league would bet on they're not betting hoping they're hoping and they should I mean, that's I hoping our competitors. Don't put together in a moment of adversity the thing. That's interesting about that is last year in game six and seven everybody thought Steve against Houston that we were downtown. I think both games that have one at home one on the road everybody and Steve would admit this. There was no Knute Rockne halftime speech that got our team back on the right track. And literally if you're intuitive at all you'd walk into the locker room, and you look around and say, what am I witnesses here? What is going on what I saw and half time at both those games was a connected team. And there wasn't. You know, why it was because nobody was playing nobody was giving up. Nobody was letting go of the rope. Nobody was blaming anybody else. And that's that's really all I know of art versity. And so I believe in it again, and again and again because deep down I think our team Kevin all our players. Do love basketball do love to win hate to lose. And at the end of in those tough moments..

"You could say let's meet with I want to meet with Kevin by myself. I wanna be with dream. I'm by myself. I want to meet with two of them. Just just us three. I wanna meet with staff and talk about how we should go forward. I wanted me with clay and talk about Rocco, I don't know. What's the first meeting about this that you have Steve, you know, and it doesn't have to be in any particular order just some of this stuff's organic. But it's just because again, I wasn't witness. I wasn't. So so for if you're somewhat intelligent before you jump in any discussion, you want to get all the information from somebody that saw it that you trust and relationship with and no. So was I Steve and some of it. He didn't see also. So it's about what happened. That's the beginning of any any understanding something why did. Happen. What should we do? And that's the beauty and the good fortune. I have of working with a guy like Steve. And the thing I liked the most about Steve is. It's never about Steve. So when you when you talk to somebody, and you know, that their motivations agenda about our team our organization, it's a pretty healthy conversation because it's not him trying to say, well, I was my fault. I mean, I I didn't know and he's not defensive like that. It was more of. Okay, here we are. But again, this is a guy that had been on a team with Michael Jordan, who is probably the one of the most driven competitive. Human beings had taken a punch from the. I mean, this is a guy that sits there, and Steve maybe more than anybody was equipped to say, okay, I played on a team that was under a microscope. I played on a team that was supposed to win. I played on a team where every game we played in the opposing arena was their big as game. So what better human being to steer that ship to process? What does it mean? What does it not mean? That's why I always fall back on him because he's very smart. He's very humble. And he's got great perspective and experience in these areas. So we talked. You have all those things like you said all those conversations. Yes. So do you do then do you meet with Kevin one on one? And just say, hey, how are you feeling? I think one of the things that I try and do is these things happen. Like when they you make yourself a fail. I didn't say my office tomorrow at nine AM, which would have been one way to go. I think we waited a little bit to have that conversation. But. Yeah. Tucked Kevin, tucked it, all those things. Oh, and sometimes it's not close it or it's my office. It might be at practice. It might be talking to another somebody outside of our organization that says that you trust or somebody within it at a different level and say, what do you think it's serious? I'm not trying to demean it. It's not that in different than at your family reunion. The coal you own at the other guy, and you go and we'll hang on. We're gonna meet together for Christmas. We gotta make sure those people, but you don't really do it. Well, it pays me. The only difference is at the can't go. Join another family cosign with family. But that uncle could say I'm not coming to the next fetch true. I'm out of this family. I mean, again, I know you have other questions, but no I looked this in its life because how and this is the saddest thing, and it's probably more. More each smart sad. I suppose family members you run into people haven't talked about brother. And this isn't me sample. I haven't talked about brother and eight years. What happened all the time? We've got in a The fight. Christmas party. Yeah. So what? Talk about repairing. There was people around that situation. How do you repair that? And then you say you see situations where you go. Oh my gosh. Did you see what those two yellow in each other again? And now now, they're great friends. And so you see all kinds of it. But I think it requires effort and for me not being within that not being a part of that conversation. How do I help mend it?.

"I know what he's like. I was there. What am I going to be like, what are the players going to be like, and my favorite story in the job was when and I'll get I will answer your question. We lost game seven of the NBA finals to the Cavs in sixteen whatever. It was six and to walk back in the locker room and see Steve accepting blame right? Not not deflecting accepting which I think is what a leader should do. And then to sit across like you. And I are right now, basically alone, even though this is going to be public and here are players down to a man, not blame anybody. And just Steph saying, hey, I got to play better and dream on saying, I I. We'll never let this feeling happen. Again. I I hate this feeling, but nobody that was the your dream on got suspended one guy. And I'm not saying this for the sake of this podcast blamed him and said, well if Draymond hadn't got suspended. I mean, he's I wrote I wrote a story about the following year. And the only guy who would go as far as to say. Of course, we were upset about it was Livingston. Who said, of course, we're upset. I mean, we we need a good player Q let us down a little bit. But like, I've always said that I was astonished that would have broken a lot of teams that would've there would have been lasting fractures never revealed. And so to what you asked initially. It's okay, you can take that specific instance or another one we were going to face adversity. There's so much scrutiny on our team. Something was going to happen. Whether it was dream on her Kevin or somebody. There are moments in I love using I probably overdue this analogy with a band. Sometimes the Taurus is going to yell at the lead singer. Some of the lead singer is gonna Yeltsin drummer probably doesn't happen onstage which did for us. But but it did. So now, what do you do? Well, what are those guys gone through together? And they're probably two of the closest guys on the team. They've won two championships together in situations. Like that you have to fall back like you do in any relationship. What's the equity you have in that relationship? How much can you withstand that? Because if you don't have that that's where you get in trouble. But those two guys actually really have a real relationship. So they've talked and they've repaired that moved on. But if you don't have that ability you can lose a season like that. And so for me you initially observe right after the game. You don't you? Don't jump in there and fix everything. It's like anything. It takes time. It takes effort. It takes apologies. It takes all those things you among the many things you are known to be good at people skills, obviously as one of them, Steve too. So so you you're the GM of this year, the president of basketball operations, excuse me. Shop show, very fine. So very sorry. Worked for your the grand poobah. I think. I think that should become title. There are a series of meetings. You could have you could say, hey me. And Steve we're going to meet with Kevin and Draymond now separate from this. "bob myers" Discussed on The Lowe Post

"No cable required. And now the low has spoken to the low post podcast live from the MIT's Sloan sports analytics conference where for I believe the third time at this event. I am joined by the general manager of the travelling circus, Golden State Warriors. Bob myers. How you doing that wasn't very fair? Right. Start up with circus. I'm good. This is a little mini tradition. Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't. As mean as my Zarian throwing light years at that. Was we just? Yeah. That was that was completely out of line Nabi about that. The first time we did this podcast recently in the rear view was the Draymond yelling at Steve current Oklahoma City incident, and I was fascinated to hear. You were not at that game. And I was fascinated sort of here. Okay. What happens to your life? When that happens so three years later. Yeah. The event of I think the event of the season so far in the NBA is Draymond and Kevin Durant on the sidelines and after the sidelines against the clippers everything bad happens in Los Angeles. By the way, every bad thing for a team happens in Los Angeles. Were you at that game? Yeah. So what is life like for? You would you realize something happening and what happens as it's happening or after the game. What what are your memories of that night? What what happens in your life? She's the memories that I had I was sitting on the court that game. I didn't actually see that happen. Which is I don't know why I missed that. Because usually when you're at a game that that is what I watch. I mean the difference between going to a game in person seeing on TV. Is you see things like that? And I know actually had I've been watching on TV it was more showcased. But since I was there, and I wasn't in. I was in the opposite baseline on the court from where our bench was. So I actually missed the whole thing. So when I walked back to the locker room as I was walking back there after we lost. I heard I heard rumblings about it from the coaches and some of the other players, and we walked back in the locker room and heard it being discussed, and I think more so now than any other time, and may maybe as we fast forward, the exposure team faces is maybe at the highest level it's ever been so Larry Bird ever get into with Mikhail. I bet they did. I bet magic. I didn't do it with Kareem. I don't know maybe they weren't HD cameras. And now, they can read lips and everything. So it's a different era of also free agency was much less. Yeah. It was. Yeah. Exactly guys signed long. It was completely different environment landscape. So the scrutiny is is is there, right? And you're seeing separate from that situation. So you walked back there. And you realize what's different about the NBA and and life is that within. Family. If you get in an argument with an uncle a brother sister, wife, usually it's not on camera. Usually, it's not one thousand nine thousand people observing. So that's what separates. So so how do you deal with that? Right. So there's there's there's arguments that happen all the time. And I would argue that the better your relationship was someone the more chance you're going to be truthful with them. And so a fake relationship a marriage of friendship teammate, it's hunky Dory. You never get into anything. But that's not a real. That's not real life. So they had you know, obviously, we know what happened. So then it's about okay. How do you go about repairing it because I always look at when you build a team build a company, hire anybody. I think the best thing you want to discern is who who are they at their worst, you hire a coach what Steve Kerr going to be like we lose game seven of the finals. I wonder what he's going to be..

Could Draymond Green vs. Kevin Durant make the Warriors stronger?

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Could Draymond green versus Kevin Durant. Make the warrior stronger, Draymond green might have thrown his team into momentary crisis this week. But he also threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the league on Thursday after a team shoot around in Houston. If you're one of those other twenty nine teams in the league, you've gotta beat us. Green said in his first statement since being suspended for his argument with Kevin Durant. We not going to beat us. We're going to continue to do what we do. If you think you saw something before good luck with us. Now, we're not going to crumble off of an argument any may be right because the fairytale that the warriors have been living for the past few years is made up of living breathing ego driven players who are individually worth GDP of small countries. So of course, there are behind the scenes disputes and clashes this drama may have opened a much-needed steam valve may have released. Some of the pressure may have put everyone's cards on the table instead of having questions of free agency and player surpremacy lurking. In the background. This may make everyone take a hard look at themselves. Do we wanna be individual countries? Or do we want to show strength in numbers? Just us. This whole week has had the feeling of a past the area dispute Joe Montana versus DVR with a hint of adolescent, girl. Twilight mania team Jacob or team Edward do. We have to pick sides do the teammates have to pick sides. Probably not the members of the team have been living with these personalities and issues for longer than they've been exposed publicly the ability of green and Durant to walk into practice together on Thursday, talk fist-bump shoot together and play together against the rockets. Doesn't mean this is over not by a long shot. Green has reportedly appealed his fine. His harsh punishment this week by Steve Kerr and general manager. Bob Myers suspended one game without pay may continue to not him. Why was he punished so severely by leaders who have gone out of their way to have his back? It leads one to believe that Monday nights. Outburst wasn't an isolated incident. And that green has been pushing the envelope for awhile. Maybe even been warned repeatedly the encored incident that unleash this storm wasn't particularly noteworthy green was in the right on the court Duran looked selfish on the court. But it was the word set on the bench that revealed the Fisher. It's no secret. I'm emotional. Green said I wear my emotions on my sleeve. Sometimes it gets the best of me, and it doesn't work in my favor. But I live with that because works to the good more as my resume shows though, he vowed not to change on Thursday. Green was far more open and conciliatory in his comments than Durant was the other night. Durant may continue to carry a grudge. That's something. He's pretty good at basketball teams are studies and collective psychology. And the warriors have always had potentially combustible elements. Durant notoriously has thin skin. Green is an expert at finding the thinnest part of anyone skin to see if he can Pierce it. Both men are elite grudge holders and go out of their way to find things to feel. Victimized about to fuel them. I've had my own standoff with green I didn't understand why I was being frozen out. He was angry over something. I wrote and our relationship was initially rectified through a sitdown orchestrated by a warriors employee emotional and intense green is a warrior through and through a combination player assistant, general manager, welcome wagon Durant. In contrast is aloof. He is both by his arrival through free agency and his personality. More of an outsider green probably more than anyone else on the team has been irritated by the sense. That Durant is holding teams future hostage to his pending free agency. I've read a lot is this the end of the run did I ruin it. Or did I force Kevin to leave green said at the end of the day, whatever Kevin decides to do what clay decides we had great years together. I support everyone wholeheartedly one hundred percent as a man as a human being you've got the right to do what you wanna do with your life. Yes. That was the past tense. We had great years. Together. So maybe Durant does leave and maybe green will alternately be part of the reason. But maybe as most people are beginning to assume Durant was going to leave anyway. And this incident just got the issue out in the open put it on the dinner table where the family can deal with it. But this season isn't the past tense. It's the present. And maybe green is right instead of being gleeful that the warriors are in crisis. Maybe the rest of the league has to be even more worried about them now and Killian is a San Francisco Chronicle columnist Email a Killian SF chronicle dot com Twitter at an Killian.
