"About about purdue basketball They're arenas need for college basketball. But Chris Interesting. Yeah congratulations let me. Can I say something about night please. My first interaction with them as I went to Camp my senior into your high school and I've got two buddies with me okay. I'm leaning back election. I don't know if it was Last cousy or someone but she's pretty pros. I'm a senior. I don't need needed anything about free. Throw so I'm laying back like already goes sleep night notices me. Hey you I'm looking around like Oh boy so I don't take shit ship from Scott me and I don't take shit from Quinn buckner. I'm sure as hell not going to take it from you. Get your ass out of here. And then any skips over march namesake mark closure losure. Who was in Indiana all star and played at Michigan and he goes you and he looked at mark and skipped over to the next guy said you know with him as the loser play? Whatever gets the other two clubs around here so we go back the door coach K.? Comes up he was backing. It was nineteen. Seventy four coast caves the only year. There's an assistant. So he comes up and gets we go back and he takes us to coach nights off this like like on Tuesday. You know it's a week long camp. He said guys. We need to go apologize tonight so you can have a good rest of the camp so I go in there and what you're you I said I'll be a senior and what you're here. I'll be a sophomore well. He's a young. You're you Jack Ass you have been more mature than that and an example and on and on and on so I we leave and he hit me so hard on the back on the way out. I stumbled book no coach night. Yeah I stopped and took a swing. Yeah no I didn't So anyway the second time. I had an interaction with coach night. I had him in class when I went. I you the first thing he says says guys. He walks into a classroom full of kids in the class. Bills up in in a hurry so he walks in and he said. Hey how many kids have had coaches. You didn't like you know over half the almost the whole class raises their hand. He goes you know what we never liked. All you little bastards. Either so he goes he goes. Here's the deal that door locks at eight o'clock there'll be no tardiness if you're absent once the best grade you can get as be if you're absent twice the best grade you can get as a see if you're absent three times. Don't come back you don't fail the class. Well there you. The attendance was like it was unbelievable and Ebeid everybody keep a notebook. I still have notebook and I'd really like for one of you to to ask me what they got in the class. C probably right. No I had to take classes on my transcript. Yeah how bad. Oh boy bill would it go well. Well she's degree state. So yes that's Carolina Way Care buying away so anyway that that was that and then I gotTa tell you he had a he had a show Bob Night's show obviously and that's the year back in eighty eighty one eighty when Roosevelt Barnes. Isaiah got into. It is as a sucker punches barnes. And that's all people see. There's video somewhere of. Barnes slapping is Asia so knight takes up for him. They go back to purdue a few months later to play. And Purdue people are Ripping Indiana and saying things about nights wife and all that so invites George King who was the The athletic director for a long time at purdue he refuses to go on the Bob night show He didn't like the show at all. He was critical of it so night as a as a fan say he's not coming on or friend so I've got a donkey so the night brings this donkey onto show and said this donkey expressed the same views as anybody from purdue and this is symbolic of purdue and Chuck Marlowe August. What's his name and I it goes well first name is Jack? His humor was unbelievable. The things he did guys for for the library. Sorry for people behind the scenes was unbelievable But again you can't you can't deny that he did some things that have been doing. It's it's fascinating waiting like I said I don't condone the bad stuff. But we just want to point out that like it's you can't just condemn a man and pretend like he had a a net negative impact on the world because he didn't that's the that's what's crazy is like the dirty little secret that no one wants to admit. Is that night's methods of coaching and teaching and all that actually work because like you said no one was absent to his class like all of his players graduated guys who played for him. Were in getting in trouble off the court so as as messed up as it is to say in this day and age when when that just you know we we we know more about. I don't know grabbing guys by the balls when they're on the bench which is probably not a good way of coaching at the same time like his anymore. It used to be hitting guys with towels wrapped in tape is not a not what you want at the same time like worked. So that's the dirty little secret. Bob Knight is like just play. Defense brought them ethical. Michael lying in it alters behavior. I'm all for their. You know we get a quote thing to put on this in the studio. It doesn't cross an ethical line. It works those are the rules. Are the rules. You know what it was. It was very clear. And I wouldn't have had any problem for your Ryan to go down there and play mark And you know that. Ah you're out at Madison Square Garden State. Mark probably wouldn't tell you this but this season how state makes governor game for ESPN or whatever the night or mark grants over and somehow sees he's night or tasted down a ball and said. Hey how you doing mark said something. Like coach night are nicer. What's up night? Harvey trying to grab my arm pointing out. Then get your dad back in the day. Yeah so you said you said something like Marxists or something. Like I'm from Indiana and I've always respected what she did you all night. Those fear from Indiana and I was still coaching Indiana. You're sure as hell wouldn't be on Ohio state steam. Yeah that was. That was one of the coolest things that have I as it turns out coach. You haven't seen any place you would not have occurred to me but respect the thought the people that don't understand. I thought that mark was an Ohio state. Die Hard until I went home to your house and then I met your dad and we did the full walk through and I realized that you were the biggest disappointment for not going in Indiana mark would have just trained. It'd be a different story. Well that thanks for joining us we. It was very brave of you to face. The music people wanted to this is the this episode is all about tears. People want to hear. Take cry about North Carolina. Losing to do they want to hear you crying about purdue and it's very kind of you to take time out of your day to day we've got five banners man by an off the air share with with us. We're we're on the scoops game. We want all these early on. You're saying stories about night that I don't WanNA share that. Just share them with us. We'll do a good way of We'll we'll we'll put our dirty laundry Andre. Yeah we'll just cover our tracks we don't we won't name sources. It's definitely not from you guys. Everyone listening if you hear a story about Bob Knight from US in the future. It definitely wasn't my dad. That told us the new person. No one hundred percent all right all right. Thanks Dad thanks go satis take care guys thanks all right bye all right. Thank you to my dad Eh. One of the the victory away from that day for me was Give it a ping pong table. Yeah get rid of them Yeah get rid of your Nice Locker. Rooms get rid of Any sort of distractions away from the fact that you are a basketball player and just play the game But we as we get done. I was just talking to you and I was like the last time we were in Bloomington. We saw Archie Miller coach Miller and he was walking walking around the facilities. And you know he's being nice. It was asking things about you checking in and we're just like you know. What are you guys? Need to take steps. Let's say these are asking your dad. Like how do we get the banks. Excuse me we gotta get these facilities right. We're going to get more ping pong. Our our lockers trash renewed working like how do we crew these five stars and that right there is the problem with with the cultural war. Vienna basketball is is the old heads like my dad. Went dislike old school lockers. I like to think that all those people. Hey you know what I mean that. My Dad wants you to play Chuck's again. Yes yes no just walk and choose. Explain your walk. Bring up the the They put like the State of Indiana on the back of jerseys like the little outlined yes and Oh my God he must have sent me seven texts about that over the course of our many weeks it was is like every every time I hate to like. The jerseys are horrible. Make they put one tiny little still. When will it happen? When would they put the names on the back of the Jersey because that will be the day that Indiana fans over officially closed load? That will be they the the Beta doing when cream cream took over because it was going to be like Penn State. Did it after the Sandusky stuff because I think James Franklin. He was the coach Bill. O'Brien O'Brien that's the O'Brien O'Brien said I remember. He said like I want to put the names on the back because I want everyone to know who stayed like who could have transferred in who was loyal Penn State. I want everyone to know their names. And I think Indiana thought about doing something similar even though the timelines but like I remember when critic over is like a there is a debate about. Are they going for news on the back in that. Got Shut Down Real quick. Yeah of course the recruiter and we also need more pool tables ping pong tables..

"The saga a lot of people there probably weren't even born when Bob knight was fired for my you right you're absolutely right but with with technology these days with YouTube you can go back and see a lot of great tunes from Bobby next career and the eyes some of those kids might be able to identify with some of that stuff I think it's pretty cool that he once threw a chair across the and I admit man I was kind of on the fence about the whole thing because I I'm a Tennessee volunteers guy rice I'm trying to be objective looking at this but I grew up in Indiana and respect to Helena what Bob knight has to offer I didn't know if I needed closure or what it would feel like but having watched it with my own eyes that was closure that was putting the end of the story to bed right there now I will also add this I'm done with RG Miller as somebody that lives here in Indiana I want as many teams from the state of Indiana to get to the NCAA tournament as possible right but I'm done with RG Miller how do you lose that game how do you lose rivalry game home court Bob knight's coming back he got Cuban in the stands sage steals the stands and there's no passion from the team that's what bothers me the most he'd be one thing if Purdue just plain cool lights out sometimes the other team they catch fire he can't do nothing about it but it was good they won the game date you know fight harder than Indiana did but there was no fire Bob knight at halftime yelling for defense throwing his hands around there was more passion in him that Archie Miller's mealy mouth self walking up and down the side are similar in let the team watch the Bob knight ceremony at halftime and that problem do you think that's a problem he gives you should should focus on the task at hand don't get X. distracted by what's going out there on the court at halftime that was an extended halftime bring everybody in there you talk about what you're doing right to talk about what you're doing wrong you make your adjustments you chew a little but if you have to but did a farm Archie Miller I bring everybody up there to the whole way can I remind them look at this this is the nineteen eighty big ten championship team not even the national championship big ten when you play good ball here in Indiana they treat you like gods this stadium is sold out to welcome back its team that won a big ten championship and the coach that was along for the ride this is what Indiana basketball's about now if you want to be treated like a god for the rest of your life when you come back here if you want to be walking the back year after year and have people buying your drinks and given a standing ovations I highly recommend you start playing Indiana basketball you had every opportunity to show those kids that but you stayed in the locker room and there's no passion there's no fire from Archie that's what bothers me the most just as a basketball fan you don't even coach K. coach case old do you still see him firing up the Cameron crazies pumping his fist once in awhile you don't see anything from Archie no emotion and they played like it and that's unacceptable six on the right on the ninety three W. IBC mash up primary using I was a lot a lot of ground I don't really yeah.

"It's not welcome back everybody in the so Monday afternoon and clearly the story of the college basketball weekend what's the return of one of the two or three greatest college basketball coaches in the history the game Bob knight Bob knight returned to assembly hall on the campus of Indiana for the first time in twenty years Bob knight is and will always be Indiana basketball three national championships numerous big ten titles and obviously a lot about Bob that is brilliant a lot about Bob that is controversial it was emotional to watch Bob knight return and one of the central figures in that in the return is my friend Randy Wittman who was kind enough to join its Randy won the big ten championship at Indiana he won a national championship in Indiana get an excellent can be a career as a player and obviously a two time coach including time here in Minnesota with the Timberwolves and Randy is with with us rainy thank your time obviously Bob moved back to Bloomington recently but a lot of people of wanted him to return to assembly hall really since the twenty years he left why was this the right time well it's not so much the why Chad it's it's it's just happened to be you know he's he's in a different spot in his life now he moved recently moved back he and his wife Karen recently moved back to Bloomington and have been there since early fall and it's it's just I think your are at this point in his life was an opportunity for him to to let bygones be bygones he loves the state of Indiana obviously and that's kind of what my message to him was in in inviting him back that the reason why you moved back to Indiana that's because you know that's where you belong and so you know he he thought hard long and hard about coming back what a Saturday was you know they were honoring the nineteen eighty six and yep in which I was on and that's kind of how it all got started it was yeah I've been back separate number of reunions that they had thirty years in two thousand sixteen they honored the thirty five year anniversary of our eighty one championship but they've had a seventy six championship and before those times we as players of called and opened up to coach to have him come back with this and it just wasn't right I mean he told us that he wasn't going to do it then when this reunion came about you know I I told my wife I said well we'll give it another chance all I can say is no and that was kind of the premise of it he moved back and I said coach her sign you know it's time for us to be together us players don't want to come back anymore to these reunions if you're not a part of it that's the reason why we came to India what are because of the weather wasn't become academics there was because you and as you know he agreed to it were you surprised the first time he said Randy you're right all come back well I would yeah I mean I was giving my in the fall and I stopped talking to let him answer me and there was dead silence I'm thinking to myself holy crap he hung up on me but yes we know that it yes and no because you know it was a big step movement back yeah right and that was the perfect opportunity in my mind the you know what coach know there was you know that's the reason your honor if you move back and he told me how great it's been your friends back there still you got people he can go to dinner with his doctors are there and he was telling me how great it was nice to well the perfect great then you need to let the fans of Indiana so you walk on assembly hall court one more time here's a here's one of your quotes with it was one this is talking about Saturday after was done it was one of the greatest emotion most emotional things for me I don't know full ever see something like this again in college basketball when he moved back here I told me you're back here because this is where you belong you obviously were with them before he walked out on the floor pulling you Sean walk on the floor with Pat with Quinn Buckner with with with charm it was Scott may what what we think of that at that point use me this is going to go down out you know I mean I've I've got two kids I've got a grant here that there are very there's a lot of great things that happen in my life this is this was an emotional day that that I've experienced in a long time that I mean I just can't put into words you know we had six plus players come back you know it more from them too yeah I was nineteen eighty pick can't separate fifteen to fifteen yep lawyers about the once you know we got word the coach is coming back we just invited everybody that's ever played for and try to get as many people in a short amount of time to to come back and we had sixty plus explorers from nineteen seventy to two thousand and that doesn't happen I mean well no I don't think would run I meant by that is I mean you know dean Smith wrote that never had experience something like this walking back out on the court with every player that ever played form you know John what is the average age is just an experience that I don't think we'll see in college basketball again legendary coach coming back and in one arena where every player that ever played four and was there with me and it was just a really emotional day Randy Wittman is with us a name so familiar Minnesota basketball fans he is most associated with the Indiana basketball big ten championship nineteen eighty national champ chip in eighty one and he was a central figure in bringing back his coach Bob knight to assembly hall Randy I don't know Bob nearly as well as you in fact it's not even close but I have spent a lot of time around him in an earlier part of my life and I and I've watched everything that makes Bob knight Bob knight and then as I watched him walk on the floor I thought about my respect form and I also thought about his health you know in in with all the respect you have for a man don't go any farther the want to bid for people who are curious about how Bobby's doing health wise what can you share with us well I mean obviously he's got a point as life that his health is deteriorating he he's still very cognizant of who we are in the conversations we have but I think you know we got as you saw or or if if you saw any of it yep batter day I mean I mean he he's he's health has declined a little bit and I I just think this was the opportunity that we had to take advantage of at this point and there was great we were you know we we had so many players back we could get everybody tickets to the game so we we actually went to the practice facility and have big screen TV set up and coach came back and sat with this we had lunch and watched the first half at together as players and coach all together watching watching the game and then what was that like when out of there is it's incredible yeah I I to a team you know just I mean I I took him back to the locker room before the game to select the players see him and introduce them to the players and he got into the speech he gave those players before the game was Rick I went back to my point day I mean it was coach in the locker room trying to get his team ready to go out on the floor and it was spectacular and you know it actually I was ready to go play is he at times reflective on his life or is he more living in the moment at this time it's a good question I mean I think you know he he's comments of realize the greatness that he did at the university ever think that you know was more evident to me that you know as I said to him let's let the France of Indiana see you again but yeah what was even more special I think he hit him saying the France and it has a lot of for them not not just the love of the France for coach but it back I mean he got emotional on the floor I mean he had tears in his eyes and I mean we were all crying out there on the floor next and I think that's just where he is in his life now I mean he is you know to the point of you know I'm back here let me enjoy it one last time and and I think this was a day that meant a lot to him as much as it did all its players yeah three and there are and see in this to be a part of it I think for him it was it was something that that he'll never forget last thing and I know you gotta go could you get a jump on a plane just his feelings about the van leading up to it even before and then what he thought about it after it was done when you're talking him filing a halftime ceremony well I mean he he quickly had the leave at halftime so you know he really are Pacers were honored him engine Katie believe it or not we were playing Purdue yep that day so no but the good the time spent afterwards I mean you could see the join the space yeah it was something I'll never forget in the join our players I mean we couldn't of course the first time you know seventies to the two thousand that we were all in one place at one time and that the ability to reminisce and go over the next I have a couple drinks and it was just a great weekend it was one that I guess that that it's it's wonderful I I'll take to the grave with him for you I'm I'm immensely glad it happened I know my father watching a lot of people who have a strong opinion about Bob knight were drawn to this and it was one of those unique events which are always a pleasure travel safe we'll talk soon Sir okay Randy women kind enough to join us and he really was as central is anyone getting this Bob knight event don and if you haven't seen the footage yet it's absolutely worth that want to tax you.

"In college basketball is February start paying attention so much so we're going to do this in a second the first in season brackets have been revealed by the selection committee will get into that but the big news of the day there's a couple of Duke and North Carolina was an all timer does not matter well does Carolina fans of their below five hundred but as you'd expect North Carolina and Duke an absolutely great game well unless you're wearing Carolina blue but we'll get into that momentarily but Bob knight is back in Indiana after twenty years of Bob knight a return to Bloomington Indiana here it is halftime with divide tell providing commentary you for the tremendous low remembering she what is the chief so beautiful to see the the show is you walk on the sport I'm so happy that that will be this happened try to to use the word of god which is a special room he wanted his son Pat I see a Thomas was there Quinn Buckner was there lot of familiar faces Randy Wittman former Indiana great NBA head coach was there as well yep it's been twenty years no you do not have to agree with everything that Bob knight did obviously is present in the read situation in some of the things he has done it was less than remorse for there's no question about it but Hey we are forgiving society and it's been twenty any seventy years old and it's you know he's late in life and why not right let's honor the guy and and in short let him enjoy the moment you know they this guy had a rough of on a wild twenty nine year twenty nine season career of six hundred and sixty two victories that's the school record eleven big ten championships eleven and not only that five final four appearances three national titles is one of the great coaches in the history college basketball you graduated his kids he ran of clean program and then you know we did he goes on to Texas tech and and and you know did good things there and retired with nine hundred and two career wins did some great work has done great work with with the S. P. N. as a color analyst on college basketball on John is one of the great coaches in the history of basketball at any level yeah and it finally goes back to Bloomington Indiana and he is honored the other big story the day Duke and North Carolina Carolina was doing it just for pride and they almost had a but ninety eight ninety six Duke rally from thirteen the head of the final four and a half minutes of regulation and then this happened the game is tied at ninety six rebounds.

"Does it hurt anybody other than Bob Knight like nobody mild mine's Dead Pe- other people like it doesn't bother them. I promise you the only Person Person Bob Knight's resentment hurts is Bob Knight and any psychologist would tell you the same thing. So if he's let some of that stuff go that's awesome because because I always hoped that he would and I was reading John Feinstein Rhoda Column. He obviously is the author of season on the brink and he had a column in The Washington Post last night night and it was really good and so it was. It was the first thing I wanted to read about this. And he points out that yes bob. Knight is all of the bad things you've heard. He's he's a bully. He is angry complicated man in fact and I didn't realize this but the last on the final page of a season is an on the brink. This sentence was written. These sentences were written by John. Feinstein quote talking about Bob Knight. He will only be forty forty six years old a young man with a bright future if he doesn't destroy it that was on the final page of a season of the brain. He knew who this guy was. And and the complexities that went hand in hand with Bob Knight. So I'm not GonNa away from any of that. He choked player like he bullied people. He threatened threaten people. He was an in an asshole to people and probably still is to this day. All of that is a part of him but it is also worth noting coming from a NCWA basketball perspective there was never any hint of impropriety and Feinstein his column tell stories about one-season season. Steve Alford like did a calendar. Shoot or something in violation of NCWA rules and this wasn't like the Indianapolis Star broke the story or sports illustrated exposed it. Nobody knew but Bob was made aware of it. And they selfie call in compliance person and had his compliance person call the NC AA literally the same day. And you know what game was next the Kentucky a game against Kentucky that that they lost and as tells the story like Bob Knight could have done a couple of different things here that what he did. And that's what you're supposed to do but what he also could have done is like waited until three days later and then self reported it l.. We just found out about this thing. You get Alfred Against Kentucky and then he misses a lesser game. All right or you could do. What a lot of coaches would do? which is you know? We're just GONNA pretend I don't know about that. And it was possible nobody would ever find out and it would never be an and incidentally issue but immediately turned it in and took a loss because of another story was Feinstein. Johnston said there were. He found out that some of his players were getting free gas at a local gas station like they could go their fill up and you didn't. You'd have to pay for it and win. Bob Knight found out about it. He went to the gas station and like confronted the owner in an aggressive angry way. Instead if I ever hear about you giving my players anything for free gas or gum I will run you out of this town. I will have your place shutdown. He was really aggressive and proactive. In trying to make sure his program was run Within NCWA rules in a sport where we both know. That doesn't always happen and so I'm not saying that makes him an angel because it doesn't. I'm not even saying it erases the other stuff or balances it out because it doesn't but when we as a complex man like they're those stories but then there's the stories I just told you a man who won three national championships and nobody. Nobody's even ever suggested for a second that it was done outside of the instable rule book. That is at least worth something sure. But he's a walking contradiction because he demanded discipline and control of players and lactate himself so So yes I in complex man can sometimes be a student in for just a huge jerk so his again. His influence coach on the game can't be denied when it comes to inside the lines. He rightfully regarded as a top five coach in college basketball history. I don't have an issue with that. But he is someone who is fairly painted as a bully that he was for much of his career and without debate like the way that he coached basketball. In nineteen seventy four would not fly today nor should it fly today nor will it ever fly again there. So for those of you in Indiana listening I do hope that it was something of a of a very positive experience in for night and all all of his loved ones as well. There's no doubt about that But yeah that was a significant moment. One of the more notable ones. We've had the season and that'll be the case Regardless so I'm glad we talked about it and you. You know who knows if we're GONNA see again we'll see maybe next year. The Eighty one title team will have a forty year anniversary. I don't know and he'll show up again a we'll wait and see but without exception Fars I know every coach. Whoever goes back to be appreciated in in this way even if he left that school under awful circumstances like it's the it's a good feeling? You Know Nolan. Richardson left Arkansas. Under similarly bad circumstances you know he he sued the school like literally sued the school. Yeah and it was ugly for the longest time and finally I think Mike Anderson played a big role in this. He Got Nolan to just come back the faithful. Let that stuff go. These people want to love you for what you did and what you accomplished. Let them love you. Let yourself be loved and Nolan went back and it was amazing experience. and He's been back several times since then and you know I don't know that even if Bob was genuinely moved in a positive of way and went to bed Saturday night at some sort of peace and with some level of happiness. I don't know that he's the type that would ever express that verbally in a casual way but obviously I got no skin in the game. It doesn't affect my life in any real way but I I did enjoy seeing him have have that moment because he did deserve it for every all the all the stuff he for what he meant in that community. I'll just keep it that simple. He's an icon on that campus in an icon in that commute icon throughout that state a larger than life figure and for him to agree agreed to come back and allow people who want to show him their appreciation for for what he did for their state. I thought it was a good thing. ultimately I I. I don't watch those clips and go. I can't believe they're applauding that. Bully bad man. I watch those clips and go. I'm glad that bully early. Slash in many ways bad man softened his stance enough to allow himself and everybody else and his family to had that moment. I thought it was. Yeah Yeah I think it was a positive thing and good for most involved. It actually happened. Yes the two west coast powers handle handle business on Saturday..

"And now as I explained before I've got this little snippet that I left over from my conversation few weeks ago with John Feinstein. He's the author forty books. He is one of the most noted sports authors of our time. He wrote a great book called the season on the brink with Bob Knight and this book when it was written was just an absolutely tremendous book because it showed the seamy underside of what Bob Knight was really like. And I asked Feinstein about it and his answer was so was so good. I thought that that I wanted to leave it with you. And I wanted you to be able to hear what he had to say about his relationship with Bob Knight. And here it is. John. This is so much fun to talk to you about this stuff. Man. I could talk to you for a long time. But I wanna ask you just one final question has nothing to do with anything that we talked about. But let's say you're walking along the street one day and Chevy Chase Maryland, you're year, the street is empty and around the corner. Here comes Bobby Knight. I knew you were going, and you and Bobby Knight are walking toward each other. He sees you you see him. What happens when you pass each other? Well, let me tell you what happened in nineteen ninety four when a very similar thing to the scenario. You just described happened. I was walking into a hotel on Maui with Gary Williams, Maryland bass, then the Maryland basketball coach is now in the hall of fame, and as we're walking through the lobby here comes night, and a friend has and we're going we're walking at ninety degree angles to one another. So we're. Gonna pass and Gary says, oh here, we go and nights stopped turned and said, hey, John. Hey, gary. How's it going and shook both our hands? And he then said to me, hey, I heard you became a dad for the first time. How's that going, and it was like nothing ever happened, and we chatted for about? I don't know five six minutes. And as we walked away Gary said to me all the terrible things. He said about you. I would you speak to him. I said Gary because he built my house, and I've always tried to remember what Bob Knight did for me. He he's done some things through the years that I think are awful not to me. I don't care about me. But to not speak to Mike chefs continues to not speak to Steve Alford and people who've been important as life to now, not refuse to go back to Indiana to this day, even though miles brand the man who fired him it's been dead for nine years. He's still trying to get the last word on miles brand. I think it's sad. An awful in some cases. But I look that was my first book, and I've written this quarterback is my fortieth book. And I don't think there's any way I would have gotten the right forty books on topics of my choosing if not for Bob Knight. So I will always remember that that's a great way to look at instead of thinking of him as a belief that he believes so and so all people are motivated by their own motivations, many of them selfish and many of them intensely personal. But I've always found ever since the day. I read that book I said to myself, this is one relationship that will never be repaired. And you know, it just goes to show you never say never because life is a long time. Yeah, you're right. And I thought back in nineteen eighty six when the book came out, and he said all the things that he said. Said that we'd probably never speak again. But when I did my book unread our back night loved red. And so he agreed to speak to me for the book. And we talked probably for two hours..

"And is willing to do anything anywhere anytime for any kind of bacon. So I'm sure it's it's I'm sure Bob Knight wasn't the first person in the history of humankind to opt for bacon post dinner, but regardless given given setting and said orders of cakes pies. It's more than a curveball. I may have said I want I'll have a plate of bacon, and they didn't even blink just brought him a Bank. So I'm sitting there like amazed by this like, okay this dude handset a word in two hours. The anybody other than the person sitting to his immediate left. And now he's ordering a plate a bacon. This whole thing's. We're and then swear to God. This is true. They deliver all of our desserts. I got my pie and somebody else got their cake and Bob Knight's got his plate of bacon. And for the first time on night. This dude looks at me in my is Bob Knight. It might really be. The only words he's ever spoken directly to me. He said would you like piece of bacon? And I'm like one hand. Of course. I don't wanna piece of bacon, Bob. It's desert time. I just ate like all the rose Pete. You can eat. I don't wanna eat bacon on top of that. I want. Cheesecake, whatever on the other hand. How do you turn down Bob Knight? Like if I don't want bake, it is he gonna choke me. I don't know. Plus, he's for the first time in in in the whole night showing some sort of willingness to reach out and be a normal human being like communicate with people. So I said, yeah. Coach not like a piece of paper and in. So I grab a piece of the plate. And I'm just crunching on bacon. It's still to this day. I don't know if he really wanted bacon or if he just wanted to see if anybody was mad enough to stand up to him and refuse his offer. Because he offered bacon. I think everybody and everybody was just chewed on bacon because you don't want to say no to Bob Knight. Because he might choke. You said note about night 'cause I don't eat bacon. But you know, would've earned coach nights bacon. Hong questionably. No hesitation out to. I didn't want the bacon. But I didn't know how to turn it down. I gave into Bob Knight's, peer pressure. It's okay. It's completely understandable. All right. Weekend ahead parish. What's catching you're not a whole lot? There is not a single game. Between two top fifteen teams in the country. But number one Gonzaga is on the road against a quality opponent. That's Creighton number five Nevada is on the road. That's at USC. We also got Wisconsin at Iowa Kansas state at Marquette, Purdue it, Michigan, Memphis, Texas, Tech, Oregon, Houston and then on Sunday, Minnesota at Ohio State, and then there's AirAsia at uconn as well any of that you care about. I'll have some have some passing glances. I would be at the Zona Yukon game. If not for the fact that a belated birthday present to my mother we are going to the bears giants game at the what was formerly the Meadowlands. I guess we just MetLife. So I'll be there seeing if chase Daniel get the barest nine and three here's to hoping expectations a little low after a great thanksgiving performance. Yes. I will turn this into a bears podcast anytime you want Arizona. You just intriguing? Let's look decent. I just I think that that has the potential to be a really intriguing and very interesting game. And I have no idea who's going to win. I think I'm gonna take you in that one. But I'm just overall I'm a little fascinated by that Minnesota Ohio states the only other game on Sunday. That's really of exceptional note. If even that, I don't know for the ones you mentioned Saturday, Saturday's actually kinda decent like it's halfway decent is obviously going up against college football's championship weekend, Gonzaga crate, and that's no gimme friggin zag. Let's let's see that's a two clock. Tip on Saturday will definitely be keyed in on that case data Marquette, I think can be a really really good game, and it would really benefit Marquette schedule resume if you will if they could steal that one Purdue Michigan might be the best game of all I expect Michigan to win but produce played well in lost at Florida state earlier in the week, and you could argue it should have had that wind GP. Let's see maybe we get a little bit of of a curveball there..

"And that's obviously good job protecting sources there. I didn't learn anything more about Bob Knight than I hadn't before. But the two thing three things that stood out from it for me were one. I was watching this through the lens of college basketball and twenty eighteen and over the past five or six seasons parish. We've had a coach almost annually. Get in trouble for doing something verbally or physically abusive, allegations proven or otherwise, and the I guess the after fumes of the Bob nyc type of kind of coaching is there, but it seems to dissipate year by year. I think when we get to say twenty thirty twenty thirty five I would hope I'm thinking I'm hoping that if we were to go back and watch the Bob night documentary and see how he behaved it would be like, I mean, this is ridiculous. You just one it was never acceptable. But to the idea that someone could coach college basketball, and any level and behave this way and think that it's a anywhere near acceptable or a proper practice. I think we're going to grow to fine how ridiculous and outdated that was it already feels a bit like that. Now. But I think as the years go on even worse to just the all that went into getting this story out, and what Indiana tried to do to basically fight it initially. That was just from a reporting standpoint, I thought that was intriguing in three the sad part. Neil read has passed he passed in July twenty twelve in fact, I remember being in Vegas with you. And in the guys GP win that news came out. He had a he had a heart condition, and and that's what led to his passing. So the final fifteen minutes the documentary get into what's really, very sad. Look at Neil read after the fact because it goes back to when he was on camera with CNN sl and reacting to the video of night choking him in practice and his body language is extremely uncomfortable. You can sell you can tell even though he's three plus years removed from this. He still disturbed by all of that. So there was a real human, touch, and I wouldn't call it closure. I would call it just a sad poignant ending to this. And that. Bob. Knight has outlived a lot of the people that played a part in his demise at the end. But I would say that he played the biggest part by far not even close. But the Neil read aspect of this was in particular, particularly tragic, even though he had found some some happiness in his life. You know, seven eight nine years down the road, his his life. Unfortunately came to a premature end. So it's worth watch nothing like, no, huge revelations. But it definitely brought more than I was initially expecting for. What was a ninety one hundred documentary? I feel sorry for Bob Knight. Because I don't want to say he's miserable because I don't know him like that. But he appears to have such a miserable outlook on life. He's seventy eight years old the Naismith memorial hall.

"Ninth and December twenty first the next time they'll play game other than will. Symington is Gonzaga and that will be in Chapel Hill on December fifteenth it'll be a huge game. And potentially could be you know, what sets up North Carolina's overall seed prospects and they follow up with Kentucky. But not a lot of concern for me right now with you and see I'd rather wait to see what they do against in more than two weeks from now. Yeah, I'm not worried about about North Carolina. Like like, you said. The Texas game could have gone either way. I mean, they they could they could they could have entered Michigan with a seven and a record very reasonably it was really just a shot here shot there. Whatever at Michigan. They got ran off the court, but like who wouldn't get run off the Michigan right now. I mean, maybe zag maybe Duke, but like Michigan seems you know, Michigan ran Villanova off of its own court. And what we might know because Villanova bounceback and went down to Orlando. I guess in one the advocate invitational. They beat Florida state in Florida state is good coming off far stages earlier this week beat Purdue. So what we might find out is that we were all panicky about Villanova like oh my God. What's villanova? And maybe Villanova's not nearly as bad as as as it looked as Michigan made it looked early. Maybe in reality, just Michigan's awesome. And Michigan looked awesome against North Carolina. Maybe North Carolina's not as bad as ROY seems to think it does seem like. That ROY said something like this about every other year like after early laws like, you know, I'm this is the worst I've ever coached. This is the you know, I can't get my team to respond to me. So I think it is mostly ROY being ROY. But we'll find out maybe not soon because of the way the calendar unfold, they don't play often anytime soon, but two of the next three games are gets Gonzaga in Kentucky, it's Gonzaga in Chapel Hill like you pointed out, and it's Kentucky the CBS sports classic in Chicago you and I both be at that one. So. I would assume that that that North Carolina wins at least one of those games and perhaps to and we'll look back on November thirtieth then. And so, yeah, they they took a bad loss at Michigan. But was really nothing more than than what a lot of teams are going to do it appears the season at Michigan last night. The Bob Knight thirty for thirty the last days of night made its television debut, it'd been on ESPN plus for a while but made its television debut last night. I was occupied last night. So I did not have a chance to watch it. But I know you watched it is it worth be watching when I get some free time. I think so perish. And I'll admit when I saw that, you know, thirty for thirty on night in the end of his Indiana career was was being made. I wasn't really that interested in it. I didn't know how much was going to be there. And how much of a story was worth telling and, you know, going down the putting a spotlight on Bob Knight. Again, you know, frankly, just it wasn't. Something I initially thought I was going to interested in, but but the whole thirty for thirty revolves around this former producer writer reporter with CNN sl when CNN sl was thing back in the day. And CNN sl was the outlet that broke the story about Bob. Knight, choking, Neil read and a practice in nineteen Ninety-seven, and then, you know, subsequent to that three years later long after read it left was when all of that came out that prompted Indiana two zero tolerance policy on Bob Knight. And then Bob Knight's dismissal in September of two thousand came win miles brand fired him after night allegedly grabbed a kid by the arm outside of simply hall when the students said, hey, what's up night? That's what really triggered the downfall for people that were around like this is this is just a or fresher. What was interesting was just the reporter story throughout all of this. And how he went about getting the information getting the read on camera. Era. How he got the video in the first place, which is not divulged in the documentary and says he'll never divulge that..

"Ninety nine ninety one and. Last year one hundred and sixty one. Yep. So and if you've watched south you're on a play that checks out because they bring more and he said that he's big on structure. You know, they have a great structure in place. They work hard. It's very I mean, he understands blips are bombs military. And I think he puts in that nice structure these guys play hard for him. But when you see their off like it's sorta the Virginia thing would they need a bucket in a tournament. They had they had dosier before those guys are NBA. And that's why they went to the final four like they have to have like one to get there like Silva, and like some of these guys that you know, when you see your like, that's limited. But at least he's doing the right thing. Bring Mearns a good coach he's going to you're going to be in the right spots. He's going to yell at you during the game. But he's also gonna love you. He he is like Bob Knight twenty-first-century to me. He is. He is the guy yet he knows how to be tough. But also to give you the little bit less. Now, you wouldn't give you love. No. I'm saying that he is modernized the Bob Knight. I will yell at you in a game because I put you down. But then like after the game, I'm gonna sit next to in your locker and just you know, because night night wouldn't love anybody. You just respected you close as you can't be that. It was like respect you but upset as a word Morton is hard in the game. Very very hard on you NorTel. What he's saying? Martin is like what? Yeah. Martin is the Pitta me of what we do with so many guys just like shit on players. And then we're like, but I'm rooting for them. Yeah. Heathrow your arm around the neck Farrell. Fuck. Yeah. The disliked this. That that is that that is Martin. Yeah. Not much else to say about South Carolina. SEC's good. That's that's that's a problem. The the teams sucking SEC are going to have a very tough time this year. So speaking of the SEC, Alabama speaking three SEC teams and how about that. Yeah. Alabama same sort of thing. Same sort of like vibe of of South Carolina. Like, I think of Alabama. I think if Alabama I think of Cincinnati of this you see, that's my that's my Alabama vibe. It's like they they have a brand is like we played. Maybe I'm thinking of the full, you know, what I am saying. I'm thinking of the football team, we play great defense and their offense is kind of boring, but it sort of works. No. I think that's got to be Alabama's like their identity in basketball. That's what I want from them. They lost Colin section this year. We should mention that nineteen points per game. So yeah, the they got MAC the transfer from Texas and he's eligible this year. So yeah, I mean, I it's more of just like looking at Alabama the interesting part of this. And why they're on the list is you got every Johnson who's interesting, and I liked Avery Avery said in most of his pre-season stuff that. We think we're better as a team like last year. We may have had more talent occa-, we had Sexton. But he's like I think we're better as a team this year overall Ingram like oh. Some of those guys that you kinda you've we all watch them play last year thought they had a chance. I mean, even the tournament. I thought they had a chance to maybe sneak a win. We joked about that. When it was happening is like, maybe there's athletic team could shock Villanova. You know what I mean? Right. But that's just kind of Avery has a bunch of good guys. I was team. He's a good basketball coach they have a real foundation, and they are like a real program now like Avery has a real program. People forget every Johnson coach in the NBA finals in two thousand six Mike Dunleavy senior coached in the ninety one. What's the Lakers? I think so I coach I think it's got to be ninety one. But I I can't do the right now who else enjoyed. I mean, Jordan meet him. Right. That's what it was. I mean, they'd be. We're not doing. Yeah. Yeah. "Billy Packer tells a long. It might be the longest single quote in the whole. It's a whole page page of about Bob Knight and Michael Jordan on the nineteen Eighty-four Olympic team. And I, I was two years old at this point in time I didn't. I didn't know anything about this team really. Bob Knight didn't want to pick Jordan on this. He was coaching the Olympic team that you didn't wanna have Michael Jordan on the team because what is with these Olympic coach, our man, it's a power he's. He says, I can't have to guard, can't shoot. They thought Michael couldn't shoot, right. Well, that was well, he Bob in his head because he in the in the tournament that year, they Indiana had beaten North Carolina by forcing Michael to shoot from outside and Jordan had an off night. So of course, Bob Knight little will run with that for, you know, once you once you have confirmation by as you, you can. You can live on that for a long time anyway. He says, he doesn't want him on the team. But he has to take them, of course, because he's Michael Jordan and. Then Billy Packer keeps meeting up with Bob Knight as as they get further and further closer to the Olympics and every time he sees them, it gets better and better. He's like, well, you know, I'm still not crazy about the shooting, but the guy he competes, he's a real foxhole guy go to war with him any day. Then we need to refine to retire foxhole just needs to retire that. And tire Bob Knight. Well, I guess we already did that's. And so then they embark on this exhibition tour of the states, and this blew my mind to just this fact that the college players played nine consecutive games against an NBA. NBA selections. They somewhere all star team some had, oh, no, they were really good NBA. I'm young writer covering some of this and this team with Michael Jordan crew, Chris Mullin Patrick Ewing. They beat them. They went nine and oh, against the NBA and these eight were annihilating. And when you when you read about those, see I'd forgotten about that. It's like the version of the dream team scrimmages from nine. Like I just forgotten about point. Would you love to see video of those games? And by the end of that, an exhibition tour, Bob Knight comes back to Billy Packer, and he says, he's going to be the greatest player of all time. To my notebook disguise going to be the greatest player who ever lived right? The whole everything about Jordan that the way he signed with Nike, that's a great adventure that we, we detail, but even the vintage Jordan years, and we do have Steve Kerr in the book talking about his his clashes with him and even Jordan at the end of his career. One of my favorite parts was Doug Collins. So Doug Collins is coaching Jordan at the end in in Washington, and I think I forget what the streak was helped me out Rafe footed certain amount of twenty point games or double digit towards digital case something that's simple and he's playing on, you know, a bad Washington team, so they're losing. And Doug Collins looks, and I don't think he really realized that the time, what was it steak? But he's like, well, I'm just gonna take them out. So he took them out and you know the next day Jordan system, do you really think you know I'm no good anymore or do you think I don't have it and the cons is like, no, no, I don't think that I just thought we were working to win the game and really, no. So the next game Jordan goes out and he goes Yuli me until I tell you take. Take me out. This is what he says the Collins because he just goes by nana's scores like kazillion points. And Doug Collins is like, he's like, Nope, not coming out. Nope. Not coming up for like the next three games. He averaged like twenty five points ago. He's scored fifty one and then forty five names and it was. It had been became a big story before that because he had eight points in Jordan hadn't scored under double digits in over a decade or so. It was just and they're the media jumped on it and Jordan turned around. And yeah, he dropped ninety six and the next two? Yeah. And that's just Jordan and.

Here's a story when I was getting to be a freshman force, freshman Notre Dame. I got invited to the US US trials and it was like the under nineteen trials. Matter of fact, it's funny because Tim Duncan was a sophomore, maybe going to be a junior who's really young and I was an old high school senior, and so he could have played in the eighteen and under or something like that. And he actually played up because he was just so much better than everybody like the twenty one and under the twenty and under I was on the eighteen under remember how work so I was I was friends. The guy named Charlie, Miller challenge nicknames fluke. He's from Miami. Florida actually played for Frank Martin and played for a by me senior high school anyway. So fluke had come out and stayed at my house and play. Wait a minute, a UT in the summer before this is back when you could play kinda outta area stuff. So we used to fly guys in every summer to load up our team and Charlie's a great dude. He just completed his freshman year at Indiana. And then Brian Evans was also there. And so I, I kind of befriended, Brian Evans and Charlie, and I was, you know, like little brother to both of them hanging out around the USA trials. So. When in basketball and a lot of guys are coaches or players, and you know this, but one of things that when you play for or work for a vivid personality, I like a good ice breaker is gimme gimme a story, right? Gimme a, you know, if you played with a guy who is a wack job gimme a, what's it called gimme a story. And so I never forget. I said, you know, give me a story about coach night and at the time the story was was this that they were coming back from Iowa playing on the road at Iowa and Indiana team plane had a chair for Bob Knight up in the front and it could spin around and face the rest of the team..
