Five Willis Towers worth of office space is empty in downtown Chicago

"Chicago as a record amount of unused office space 21.4 million square feet. That's enough empty office space to fill about five Willis Towers and the Tribune reports. It could be even more in the coming years. Last year ended with 15.5% of downtown office space unleased, according to the commercial real estate firm CVR E that is up from close to 13% a year earlier, and the vacancy rate could climb to 18% by the end of next year. They've been slumps like that in the past, but no modern day precedent for what happens after a pandemic. Large sections of unwanted office space could drag down businesses like restaurants, bars and shops. Bob Kessler,

"Bob Kessler with the podcast one sports. AP radio news. I'm Ed Donahue house. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is taking a hardline stand on border security and the border wall. There's going to be any. All money in legislation at the White House. President Trump responded, there's no wallet doesn't work. She's just playing games. So if there's no wall, it doesn't work negotiation started yesterday on border security. The deadline is about two weeks away on February fifteenth the committee will come back, and if they don't have a wall, I don't even want to waste my time reading what they have because it's a waste of time. The president has talked about declaring a national emergency at the border Nancy Pelosi says negotiators in congress need to talk without hearing from the White House about a wall place for enhanced fencing Normandy fencing would work. That let let them have that discussion. Customs and border protection says nearly two hundred fifty four pounds of feno was seized in Arizona, the biggest bust of its kind ever. It was found in a tractor trailer carrying produce from Mexico after it was stopped for inspection at a border crossing temperatures are expected to warm up in the midwest and the northeast by this weekend. Temperatures could reach the fifties. But it hasn't happened yet. In Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel says it's expected to snow tonight says I said before you don't have to be outside. Don't go outside. This is not just bad weather. It's a can be considered are we we look at it as a public health risks the midwest and northeast have gone through some bitterly cold conditions. The Milwaukee county medical examiner's office says it's investigating the death of a woman frown frozen inner unheated apartment, President Trump says he'll announce next week the site and the date for the second summit. He's planning to hold with North Korean leader, Kim Jong UN around the end of next month in February. A Pentagon report says the total number of sexual assaults at the three US military academies increased slightly last year. This is AP radio news. The democrat who lost in the governor's race in Georgia will be seen by local viewers during the Super Bowl Abrahams political group has bought airtime on Georgia affiliates during Sunday's NFL broadcast of the Super Bowl standing alongside a white Republican county Commissioner from north Georgia. "Bob Kessler in the WGN radio newsroom. And these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Seven twenty WGN. Chicago bulls. Eleven. And thirty eight. And that's not bad enough. By the way, you're still behind the Knicks or ten and thirty seven Cleveland, you're still buying the Cavs or nine and forty one. And you're behind the Phoenix Suns are eleven and forty so good luck. Good luck, by the way, catching Phoenix going to be tough. But I actually think they can do and let's bring in Kendal Gilbert as a phenomenal job on NBC sports, Chicago, of course, long long long time NBA how about your fighting a lion today. Kendall coming back and getting Maryland. Yeah. They did a pretty good job. You know, I thought I actually just got alerted on Instagram that they won. So you know, I was very happy about I rely. I the freshmen things that you know, he's got a chance to play the next level. I'm glad he doesn't have a jump shot because right now because he'd be one and done so a little bit more time to work on that. But you know, he's got a bright future ahead of them. So all right. Let's let's start at the top here. The bulls mega mistake firing. Fred hoiberg. You know, I probably would have given him a little bit more rope. If if I were to GM because considering that, you know, we had four other top players out to begin the season. They were injured. Let's talk to put together a good record. When your top guys are out. So that they may have jumped the gun a little bit. But you know, we never know. We know what's going on inside of your organizational. What direction they wanna head? But if I were GM, I probably would have kept them. All kendall. The next obvious question would be is Jim Boylan the right coach not an interim coach. But he is the bulls head coach, what did you think of that move? Well, I thought the gel is very capable. I mean, he's been a top assistant around the league for number of years. You know, I think still he's still dealing with the handicapped will play is being injured players not playing the long enough. Also being the youngest team in the NBA. So and also not having a training camp to implement his style. So we really don't know yet. You know, the next thirty four games will be able to tell the story about what he really can't do as a coach. Would you want to play for a guy who's doing the route roughing on the sidelines? And I don't know having you practice after back to back Cy I understand the bulls were in a situation where they were not, you know, competing on a level that Jim want or the organization wanted, and you, of course, you play for Pat Riley is a pretty demanding guy in his own, right? And we'll do maybe something like that as well. So I mean what what was your thought process? I guess at the time the way Jim was trying to sort of put his hand print on the team. And it sorta doesn't seem like it's taken hold. Well, I think as as a coach you have to go in and you have to put your imprint on the team, you know, right away. But you know, I don't believe in practice guys at the back back to back score for two or three hours. I hurt was done. You know, you need to do that in training camp. And you can be demanding coaches long, as you know, went to be demanding and win the off the gas. I think that some coaches sometimes when I'm not saying in Jim's case because I really don't know because I'm not in the practices. But you know, some coaches go one hundred miles an hour all the time. Well, you can't be that way you have to pick and choose when you can work your players, and when you need to give them a break, you know, I think that one of the main things that you guys mentioned Pat Riley one of the main things paralyzed. What he was never when he was never able to beat the bulls. When he was with the Knicks is because he was one hundred miles per hour all season long practice, two guys three and a half hours had doing one and a half was shoot arouse during the season. And then we get to the playoffs. You just don't have another year to go to. And that's why I think that coaches that are like that that are real intense and want to go one percent all the time and then game then in practice they fail in the end because they exhaust all of the player's current Harry with you on seven twenty WGN talking to Kendall Gill former bowl, former Lyon, I former a lot of teams in the NBA could go run down the gamut here. So do you put threes autom- tip at all in the same umbrella that you just did with Riley as far as grinding harder during the regular season. Yeah. I do. But you know, I I love the coach I would have loved to play for you know, the reason why is because he gives you a lot of minutes. Meaning if you get the lot which translates into more points, just go up, and you get a better contract at the end of the day. A lot of players don't understand that. The only problem that I did I. Wait. The only thing I disagree with fibs about is practicing his players three hours in practice in the middle of the season. You do that you can't learn the candle at both ends, you know, if you do that you end up with injuries. You know, you look at your king. We can we can go back to their low situation when you know, we had the game in hand against the Philadelphia. Seventy six. You know, it changes the direction of the franchise. But you're right. One hundred percent of his like, Lou Alday Tibbs may have a lot of money. Joe? Keep made them a lot of money, Taj Gibson made him a and and bulls fans, remember what Phil did Phil would find ways to have his players fresh when the playoffs came guys like Jeb Bush floor with all the sudden, you know, be getting tons of minutes in a game. So you don't pit and Horace all these other guys would be a little more fresh. Scotty, Michael always played thirty seven thirty eight minutes at night, but towards the end, Michael always dead Scottie played a lot. But I'm just saying in general he would take the minutes down from all the non superstars on his team going into the playoffs. So KENDALL, I'm I'm a positive holes fan. Larry Markkanen fastest player to ever get one hundred three's. What is the ceiling for the Finnish star? The ceiling is is high form. But the one thing that Larry has do if he's gonna reach that feeling he has to get more aggressive on the offensive in. I wanna see him take over again because we have the talent to do. So I don't wanna see him lay back on the team that he can get thirty points on the Los Angeles Lakers or the Cleveland Cavaliers teams that really what lake is not good without LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, basically, a sparring partner. You know, I want to see him go into games and and deduct the attitude of seek and destroy now. I think that he's playing okay. But I think that you can be so much better. If you just increase his intention towards the game come down the court, and you know, how long he likes to learn on the outside and she three point shot. But I think that he can be just as affected inside it in his mid range gave Clem come down and demand. The basketball team mates. Give me the ball in the post because with his talent. I think that he can dominate pretty much pretty much anybody at a physician. So that's what is the biggest concern. I guess in biggest disappointment so far from this season. Because I don't see him really making any major steps getting better being put in the right position. I mean, that's that's not good. That's not good. No. He has it in him. But I want to see you. We saw it then we'd be even more positive about the future. But we need to dominate. I actually think that he was more aggressive last year the work. Yeah. Then he this year. And I don't look at the guys in the second year. I don't wanna be too far negative on Lowry. But I personally I don't see him as a number one guy on a team that's challenging to be at the top of a conference, let alone when title you need. He is at best to me in a two. Would you agree or am? I am I two out front here. Well, right now, that's what it's looking like. But you know, I had to believe that he can be a number one guy. I still have that belief, but I need to see the aggressiveness in. I if he can bring that about going there and demand a basketball dunking on guys scoring going, and rebounding and really stepping up the Sand Lake. Hey, this is my team. But I see him if he can do that. Then I believe he can be a number one as long as he doesn't. Then I agree with you, probably a number two thirteen can I thirteen? Going to be thirteen. I liked that thirteen. It's more fun. When the bulls are winning, and we can talk about, you know, all the good stuff, all the positives. I can get a great Jimmy column story from you. But but I gotta ask a question like this. Gar packs are John Paxson and gar Forman untouchable. I don't think anybody in the NBA is untouchable. You know, Michael Jordan is no longer playing only got really game. Probably the untouchable. So you know, I think they're gonna have a plan. I think this was when they first started out. The three to four rebuild three three to four year rebuild right now. We're in the second year. I think you gotta give them another couple of years before you can really make a decision if you're only make a decision on changing direction. I think that in the future they have some big things planned for this summer. You have the agents available. You know, they may make a splash for the hats. And Anthony Davis day. We get the number one pick. Then we all know the pick. We'll be I am Williamson. Say for instance, you take the number one pick and one of the bulls. Todd young players and packages along with a first round pick to the New Orleans pelicans. But Anthony Davis. When you go out, and you Tobias Harris. Now, you're talking about a team. That's that's ready to compete in the Eastern Conference. So I think that these are the things that they're thinking about for the future. So hopefully, they can make deals like this because it's going to show the fan base that they're really serious about becoming a contender. I basically did that video at fan cited like where where should Anthony Davis go the bulls, if they end up getting lucky or have some of the best Athen assets do it and you'd be bringing them home. You know to me. That's that's at least interesting. I don't think they would do it. But. That conversation. Hey, it's Chris Donald starting point guard in this league. The jury is still out. I think he has the talent to be a starting point guard. He does he'll he'll wow, you say a man why don't they do that? All the time. You know? But I think the next thirty four games will tell us whether he is a starting point guard in this league. I mean, he's he's got all the intangibles. He's six boys big. He's rangy can play defense. I think there's some time some of his decision making, you know, causes him problems. And and he needs to correct. If he's going to be a big time starter in this league. But I mean, he has all the talent to do. So hey, thirteen. You and we'll Purdue and Chas now Martian shit. Now, she do a great job there on the bulls broadcast. I'm wondering between the three of you. Have you guys formed your own leadership committee? Well, no, lackey bark is the leader. Because he's the quarterback of the team. So we don't have any. We don't talk about the video because we don't Mark is believe. Down before you go one more on the team Jabari Parker. I dunno. I made to me. The guy is who he is. You shouldn't be surprised that he's not, you know, making the all defensive team. He was in my mind getting better each game out. And then all of a sudden you can't get on the court. I didn't get that at all. I don't know where you are sitting on it. Well, yeah, I didn't get it either, you know, because at the time when he was taken out of the out of out of the lineup, and he says he's gonna be out of location second-leading school leading rebounder. So that I didn't understand, you know, maybe Jim Boylan stalled things which he does he sees more things than us. He sees them in practice. He sees more than we do. All we see is really the spectacular scoring that you Bari does, you know? So maybe he had his reasons but still even with Jabbar. Defensive deficiencies. I still think you can find a place for scoring and as we came in last night has fifteen point and totally change the momentum of the game and the bulls favor when he when he got into basketball game. And then in the second half is the only had had twelve points in the first avenue in three points in the second half. And we really didn't see him unquenched. It reminds me wanna go way back to when Reggie Theus was was Reggie Theus. Bench. Reggie the crowd screaming Reggie. And they put them any berry three jump shots. And then coaching the team then Kevin locker. Thirteen you're a Chicago guy. Can you give me Reggie Theus is jersey number with the bulls ploy twenty four ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. I know kennel remembers Reggie Theus. Right. Yeah. Get my haircut. Like my dad, always come cut my leg registered. Man could score. Yeah. Yeah. Hell, yeah. Look good. Jack Marin also were twenty four for the bulls. Canal kinda we always appreciate getting to talk to you. Thanks for jumping on. Okay. Thanks. Yes. Kendall Gill NBC sports, Chicago doing a great job. And I think you'd be bonded with them. Right there. Harry thirteen. Well, we cannot go was a spectacular player. Oh my God. I mean, I don't know if people watching the broadcast realize how great a talent Kendall Gill was on the floor. If you're in the forty five year age rates, forty forty you you you are well aware of what the flying were that he had a great career in the NBA. Let's get real quick time out here and coming up after six get something really special for you. Seven wait to hear what it is seven twenty WGN. I.

"Bob Kessler in the WGN radio newsroom. And these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN. Hey, guys, it's trivial from food networks. Worst cooks America and your own roller thing only will Doug. Seven twenty WGN on the road live in the AllState skyline studio we could see pretty far I think we can see the future of the next. Maybe great cook that is going to be defending the culinary honor of Chicago land in-studio excited to have Terrell Judah. And he is one of the contestants. He Chicago's Representative for worst cooks in America, sunny, eight PM on the food network travel. Welcome WGN. Thank you for having me. I appreciate you having me here. Let's see this is this is the extra pressure. If you didn't have pressure enough to kind of change your entire persona kind of change. I think your reputation is one of these terrible cooks out there right now you've got to do extra media. And now, you know, you did a little bit of social media beforehand and now beat on WGN here, we thirty eight states and Canada the entire mid west at all times. And now there's more pressure for you for you to win. But it, okay. So think about this. There's pressure also to legitimately walk the walk as the worst cook. Right. So you got to be a certain amount of terrible. So you can make that that kind of redemption. Right that transformation win that twenty five thousand feeling pressure. Are you know, not a lot of pressure? This a whole lot a little bit. You know? Oxymoron, hold on a little bit. But yeah, my mouth is on the twenty five thousand I guess, I'm not gonna pay the twenty five thousand dollars. Okay. Wasn't in the bio that part of it. But I think it gives people maybe a more rounded perspective on. And I think we've all got things that we'd love to do with a little bit of money. But here's the thing. The dividends are going to pay because not only a scratch off lottery ticket where you're just going to win some money. You could spend it pay some bills you're going to be armed with the skills to be able to help your family got three kids right here. Doing a lot of I read in the thing. And of course, you've talked about it a lot of fast food, and it's not great for you. Right. And it also is expensive seems easier. Casa lot up real fast. And before you know, it you're like hunches hunches down like all off, you know, Mickey D's and berry can't sticking, you know, there's nothing wrong with those great those great American that kind of franchises with every day is not good and the foods that they create and of course, like for the kids and everything that you're gonna wanna do that. So the motivation for getting into this. Now, you got to be a fan of food network obviously for worst cooks in America. I have known and appreciated this show have covered this show. I remember talking to Bo McMillan season one and Ambro, and of course, Tyler floor. I just texted him a little bit ago to see if you had any words of encouragement, I know he may be prevented from trying to give you an unfair advantage. Even if it's on the inspiration. Tyler is awesome. He's Tyler is so nice on and off camera. He's so nice. I've I can give a quick story about filmed Norma actually on my birthday. And we we were actually was a long day of filming and Google added to do the first thing how wait a minute before we feel anything the whole crew. We have you birthday Treville almost cry like a baby. I was like. Wow. See? That's that's why he's Tyler Florence, you know. But that's the kind of thing if you could appreciate you can emulate it in down the road. You know, when there's when there's the travel show, right brother, come on us talking about recognizing people's birthdays. And kinda kinda share in that as well. So obviously a food network fan. So you watch your Bolivia's to the food world you're out there. What inspired you to get involved in the? Money, and obviously some concerns over this is going to be a lot of fun. Well, you know, my wife really told me I needed to kind of pick up the slack on on a food side will meet tour and on comedy. I'm a lotta times during the week. I have the children and so on a weekend. And so we were eating out a lot, and this is not healthy to eat out, so much processed foods and things like that. And also. Is Ben count either? And so, you know, she's like come on. You gotta try it in my daughters. They always like they won't pancakes. There ain't making pancakes. We I'm gonna make you some cereal with milk. And I I got the nukes shield. Tonight's degrees thos- those breakfast. And so literally like it was just that the pressure from my family of like you gotta get better because I only have one St Francis. Agra frenetic. Is always you have one good skill because I'm actually, you know, we do a lot of foodstuffs or we can cook a little bit. But we we really appreciate the grilling barbecue side of things if you've got one thing, I think, you're okay. Well, this is true. But you can't eat fried chicken every day. I mean, that's probably could. You know, back when I grew up like your grandma fried chicken rice for breakfast. You know, you wake up a smell that chicken the morning praise. God, I noted that. There's a God you open the open them is. He's man Gordon Smith right now, you might my wife's grandma. She was the same way. I mean, when she would come to Chicago from Saint Louis, she'll be up France early in the morning by you know, my mom, you know, big mama's gone. Is it hard to really come to terms with how powerful like your kids are like they say, hey, we would like this. I never thought I had that kind of power. I'm not sure that I really did with my kids they wake up, and they're like, they'd like, bacon and rice, that's one of their favorite things know that munchkins or pop tarts get what they want. It's hard to resist them will. Yeah. You know? What was very crazy too, though is that like my my daughter told her friend would ask me a question. And I was like, you know, what I think about it. She turns a friend. She says he said, you're think about semi who say yes about immoral. That really messed me up because it's like this. I'm very upset to see kind of knew that like, no. No, keep my dad credit. You know? It is not easy. You gotta be able to kind of defend yourself against the competition. Whether it's the kids are whether it's the competition on the show when you get out there, you got a chance to shows going. Now, you got a chance to size up the competition. I always love this show because it is like chapter you've got three executive chefs from someplace, and that's it. This is like the gamut. You've got a guy who wears no sleeves from New Jersey. You've got a very nice looking ladies from from DC. You got west coast east coast. You've got it all so is there anybody that you're looking at either you see like a front runner other than maybe yourself or somebody that you really gotta watch out for. Well, I didn't pass too much of the rare side because you know, it's kinda like we against each other starting off and just honesty like Britney and Mickey were like awesome. Like both of them. Like when they were. They were the ones they like Goliath Eliason the competition to beat brings the model from Florida and make the math teacher from Denver, Colorado. And so both of them. No. They took a lot of great notes, and they just did exceptional when we go out there and do these challenges. I'm like oh God. I can't believe it, you know, so they will heart besides my go-to. Now, he's there sometimes people come as mentioned like a teacher and a model not necessarily out the entertaining speaking because it's a different world. You get people that are really great on the chef side, they get on some of these shows they lose track of all time. They have no idea is speaking to the camera projecting kind of entertain that's what you do a little bit of insight into the comedy side of things you're used to kind of get out there. And hey, food TV that's part of it. You gotta make some good food. But you gotta entertain people to what definitely I mean. This is being. Being real is still still a show. And so the objective is you really have to step out show box me. I haven't been the box in a long time. So I was used to it. And stand up itself is is is like really getting on stage and entertain an audience of people who they want to be funny. They're not gonna say anything back to you. So it was like February made me laugh so that that's kind of any any difference the same things like when you were doing the food network. You're doing your thing. But it's like make us laugh. I mean, come on. This is this is a comedy food. So and so you had to say stuff and the bad part, though, is I never said anything I don't really feel like on on Sunday. One of the clips the season premiere one about a HAMAs. I have never had HAMAs before day in my life. I saw I who's rest dress. See the thing is is like what's great about. This. Is you get to come at this? As a person who has has put themselves out that they are looking for some guidance in this in this kind of food world, you're not out there saying, you know, everything I think that's great home. Is you know, there'll be people out there that love it, obviously, it's the traditional great sack. But the I think it's over it. I'm not really big fan. You will find me eating homeless on a regular basis outside of maybe your shell. I'm mad. They actually, you know, post production always wins. They actually put in there. A black. Oh, no. Come on. You did that looking at some of the Representative what they're out there to try to it's entertainment because this is how I felt like one thing about me on this show is you're going to see straight up integrity. Like when I say stuff. I mean what I say. I'm not saying that to be funny or critical in any way. Right. You're just making an observation. What I really feel. I mean my opinion. I don't have to try to be funny. I'm going to be funny naturally. But if I have some really wanna know don't get I'm going to say it, and you know, sometime I look down. But whatever I mean, I don't see myself seems like oh my God. I can't say that I asked the question is money. I I'm trying. And I think the reason I think that you resonated with people's that they appreciate your offense you build that into the comedy. Are you going to be building some of your experiences with this or maybe of the results into some of the routines you do onstage? So I've already start writing a lot of stuff from this show on my new standup special and just can't do it until the hard part. Is you know, we've practice so open mic stuff like that we practice material before we put it in front of a bigger audience, and it's so hard because right now contractually I can't talk about what I want to talk about. So I wrote some stuff that I'm gonna start working on wants to hear what you're doing you kind of teasing. It. You're saying like he's really good. Get ready is good is really good. Because I mean, we had you know, our did an awesome job putting out of the chaos. This was a different casts to me. And we were a funny cast. You know, it was a lot of jokes both onscreen and offscreen. And so I talked about a lot of it. And I'm sorry guys. You know, people are going to be enjoying that all seasons. Long Sundays eight pm here in Chicago on the food network. Worst cooks in America. In front and center as well. For those people. I know you're gonna be live tweeting sharing a lot of social media. As you go forward as the show continues where can people kind of keep up with your adventures, certainly see out doing the comedy thing as well. So so my my name might take a pan down my first name to spell like travel with the e so T R A V as Victor E E travel e. And last name John J U D as in dog. Oh, Amazon nasty everything from YouTube to esta Graham, everything is on there. And also, we're doing a new village. I'm be showing like a lot of behind the scenes me doin press for food network and also getting ready for an upcoming tour this spring as well. So a lot of cool things. So I'm pretty much remove the four fall of my life. Now, are you ready for this? You'd get into stand up. You definitely, you know, you to share what it is that you're doing share your personality and good friend of the program longtime guy, Jeff moral sandwich, king kitchen and all that kind of stuff. You know? He's an entertaining. He's a singer. He's a funny guy. Whatever he did not know that he would find his path to stardom through the food side of the DC because you're only one episode in right? The next one is coming up tomorrow. People are used to just I I didn't expect that I got a lot of messages people saying, you're funny. You're hilarious. Yeah. I've never expected that an OSCE. I never expected my my route to the top to go through food network..
