"Experts believe the American death toll from corona virus is likely to spike upward the trump White House has been pushing for easing of restrictions Bob Costantini reports it's a case of people wanting restrictions eased versus what that's likely to mean health wise the relaxation of social distancing rules in many states will lead to more Americans dying from Kobe nineteen then if the restrictions were still in place that's the conclusion of a virus model which now predicts as many as one hundred thirty four thousand Americans will succumb up from a pre relaxation prediction of seventy two thousand all the McDonough of the university of Washington's institute for health metrics and evaluation says it's simple more people out and interacting means a greater chance to spread the virus right now we see an increase in mobility that's needing to increase that fortunes in the United States when your time's report says the centers for disease control has issued an internal outlook predicting covert nineteen deaths will rise to around three thousand per day in the United States by the end of may currently more than seventeen hundred Americans to come each day the death toll according to the times article is a factor of an anticipated nearly quadrupling of new cases per day as the nation starts opening up business activity was reduced social distancing the article prompted a White House statement this is not a White House document nor has it been presented to the coronavirus task force the state is not reflective of any of the modeling done by the task force or data that the task force has analyzed though he's been urging protests against restrictions in states run by Democrats president trump seems to be recognizing the toll will go higher as the economic rebound he seeks takes hold we're gonna lose anywhere from seventy five eighty to a hundred thousand people that's a horrible thing we should lose one person over this the fox news channel virtual town hall meeting was titled America together returning to work at the Lincoln Memorial Hall sat about ten feet away from

"Twitter at jimbotalks. President Trump and speaker Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer have had their sage this past evening. The president's calling for that full five point seven billion dollars to help build his border wall. However as correspondent Bob Costantini reports. The president stopped short of declaring a national emergency over and over President Trump called the situation a crisis. There is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border every day customs and border patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country gone is the notion that terrorists are trying to enter the US via the southern border. After the administration's often cited statistics were questioned instead, Mr. Trump focused on crime gangs drugs coming in from Mexico over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country and thousands more lives will be lost. If we don't act right now. Bob Costantini, Washington. And so we will speak of what has been said this evening as we talk with the professor, Alan Sanders. He teaches political science with Saint Peter's university in Jersey City, New jersey and was once senior reporter for time magazine. I had the feeling frankly Allen that I was watching the Bill Murray movie groundhog's day in which I I tune in tonight. And it was like I have I've been here many many times before other than the fact that the president having have spoken of the possibility of declaring a national emergency did not do. So I'm not sure just what I would derive. From this that I haven't already derived of either from his remarks or for those of the Democrats. Well, that's right. Good evening. Jim good evening to you. And of course, happy new year to you and to your listeners. Well, yes, I mean, I don't think we heard anything new from either side this evening what we did here. Of course, was a formal presentation, and perhaps that may have been important to reach some audiences. I think the president was not just trying to reach the American people. But I think he was trying to reinforce his crew in congress and the speech was part of that. Because of course, there have been indications that some Republicans may be wavering and maybe willing to fund the government absent a wall, but basically both sides restated in a formal setting and in a formal way their position, and so I at least publicly this needle didn't move anywhere tonight. The president made note of of going with a steel wall as a concession to Democrats as opposed to two concrete, but the president going back to before he was president even before he was a candidate has always said that what we need is an effective barrier. And it'll vary from location to location in some places. The wall would be fine. Another case was terrain might dictate perhaps a chain link fence or or razor wire or some cases natural barriers. I mean, we're not trying to make the cover of better walls and gardens here. It's whatever effectively works so in that regard. I I don't care if it's if it's beautiful or for that matter, if it's quote, ugly, unquote, although it would be ugly to me, and I don't care whether Mexico pays for it, the savings that we would derive here would be just fine with me. But I I would like the most effective border security. So. I think he's changed in that in that regard from from where he was before maybe the change. I would slightly disagree with you on that. I mean, he made the wall the slogan or one of the major slogans of his campaign, and you can't just say, you know, he was for border security, very much a central piece of his conception of border security was the wall what I found interesting about the speech tonight is that for most of us speech. He talked about border security in terms of technology and human assets and more sophisticated ways in which the secure the border and the wall was almost an afterthought. I was waiting and waiting and waiting. When are you gonna talk about the wall, and that was a different kind of a tiny, really and a different kind of speech into one that he had been given giving on the stump? So I think in some sense there was some movement here from the president in that the wall was not the centerpiece of the speech it was border security. Now, the Democrats will come back and say, of course, and so that's what we've been talking about all this time border security, and that's what we really need to talk about. But we need to talk about that with. Government that's open. And so that's the debate. Of course that that we've been having. Yeah. And of course, if you take away the leverage, obviously, that's the end of of this discussion because the previous democratic congresses, in fact, including both of these people have a various times rolled different Republican presidents on on the very notion of of this in terms of of of adequate border security, of course, the bells and whistles are very important. But the idea that you'll have a physical barrier. I mean that that tells you nothing other than the fact that if you have drones or cameras or whatever you'll be able to watch people come across. But you won't be the position to do anything about it a barrier actually stops people that doesn't, but you're in the position of having to use some kind of forced to stop them or or just let them come through a barrier there on that side, and we're on this side. And it is by far the most benign way, I cannot get over the comets have constantly come especially from speaker Pelosi. Wallet ineffective and a wall is immoral. Well, she has in fact voted for immoral walls in the past. It's only when this president came along with she didn't and in terms of ineffective. I would I would love to be able to just ask her. Okay. I'll grant you superman could get over a wall or through it. How does anybody else get past that wall? And I've never heard the answer. It's a slogan. She tosses out in it is bereft of any evidence. But Jim hold on. You get you have to understand that, you know, walls and barriers are certainly useful items and doesn't have to be a wall can be a barrier. But understand that most of the United States is not protected by wall. Most people can come to the United States through airplanes ships through Canada, the notion that a wall over a part of the United States boundary will stop all know illegal immigration doesn't make. Stop all stop. Most stop. I don't think. So I mean, look the machi- Nola. No line, and we're not talking about the German army. In point of fact, there are many people who come across that border who have over the years millions of them who have just walked across that border. The other day they tried to bum's rush hour border, and it took tear gas to turn them aside. No, it won't stop everybody. But it'll stop an awful lot these things work, and they're very effective. One hundred percent is not part of the litmus test of the human experience. We don't say that because we can't be one hundred percent effective in stopping Bank robberies or rapes or murders. That Lee reason compels us to not try to stop any it would be an effective barrier. And. Whatever that remains to be seen. I think to have a real discussion on is what kind of barriers what kind of sophisticated equipment what kind of human assets would actually work what we are not having right now any kind of a discussion because we're having a government shutdown. Look, Democrats and Republicans disagree on policy across a whole range of issues if any side decided that because they can't get their way with the other side of the only way that they're going to operate is to shut down the entire government. And by the way, endanger the national security and so doing if this is indeed such a crisis. Why is the department of homeland security not being funded? Why is the secret service that protects the president not being funded? Why the American economy put in danger? I mean, you can lose thirty percent of the government endanger, the whole country percent of your government shutdown and essential services continue to be provided the t you can still go to any airport and get. Feld up by the TSA. And then once you and your fellow filled up passengers get in the air. You're not going to run into each other because the air traffic controllers are still out there. I mean, let's not not overstate this while fortunate then. Of this kind of leverage is necessary. But it is. I mean when you deal with people who make promises in the past, and then violate them, you need leverage leverage means cutting shutting down the entire government. I think we don't we didn't shut down the attack. We didn't come close to shutting down the entire government. We shut down thirty percent of it. And a non essential part of that. We didn't. Has being shut down that's creating some real blockages in the United States commerce field. The agriculture department is shut down, and that's going to create some problems for farmers. The IRS is being shut down, and that may create some problems with raising and spending some money. Of course, the entire government is not shut down, but important parts of the government shutdown. Moreover in terms of the TSA is still operating and the secret service is still operating. Do you really want to be protected by people who are disgruntled into facing financial challenges? I want to be protected in always including that border. And again, I think it's unfortunate that this has to be employed, but you're dealing with people and we'll get to a call here. Just a second. And then the break, but we're dealing with people here in terms of the Democratic Party leadership or scared to death that they're all going to be Joe Crowley, the defeated by some left winger like Alexandria of Cossio Cortez. And they are aware of the fact that. They have a very vocal if not necessarily strong in number is open borders constituency, and they're scared to death of doing anything that has affected. I firmly do believe that and that is why you've seen the change in the in the both the rhetoric and presumably soon the the voting patterns of the Pelosi's in the Schumer's of the world because they don't want to get Crowley out of office. And they're they're afraid that that'll happen. But I think the same can be said of the president himself. He's he faces a campaign promise that he's not able hold right now. And he's very fearful that if he's not able to meet that campaign promise, he will also go down to defeat and so many others allies. I think his are well aware of the fact that you don't build a wall everywhere. I mean, we know that there are several Republicans quite a few Republicans, but certainly some of already come out publicly in that are basically saying, let's open up the government. Let's have a discussion these this issue. Ultimately, by the way, my view will ultimately be decided by the American people whichever side. They believe is blocking the solution more that they will come down against that side. And that's what will ultimately make things move forward. Well, that's that's. The American people don't have any any say so over until twenty twenty but they do Jim. That's the way prior shutdowns were ended when one side felt that it was losing the public opinion, basically gave in or figured out a way to go out of it graceful who blinks first what will decide which you know, where we end. And when we and and how we ended American people through public opinion will make their views known. So we'll we'll we'll we'll see that. That's going to be a hard one to predict Paul calls in from Sioux City, Iowa on the Jim Bohannon show. Good evening, Paul. Good evening, Jim. I just wanted to say you're you're a hundred percent, correct. I was at the Vatican recently and Rome. The whole entire city is surrounded by a wall. That's probably seventy feet tall forty. Title. But anyway, yeah. Forty whatever. Ours is like what ten so the reason there is because it's defective to say, it's not effective is completely wrong. Pretty pretty year relevant, but go ahead quickly. In what way does that irrelevant? How is that irrelevant? I consider the I that I consider the pope irrelevant. I don't consider your comment irrelevant. I when the pope decried walls while he lives because I said, I consider the pope wall. That's what we're talking about. We're not talking about the poll. Okay. It was it was the first two I made the comment about the wall. And I I. About the pope. Pope. Okay. Jim, okay, buddy. So there's also the Berlin Wall. The reason they have these is because it does work, and it is a fact if to say, it's not it's crazy. Yeah. Well, of course, the case liberal in wall, we were talking about obviously keeping people in prison wall. All right Allenwood. And then we must take a break. Go ahead. Well, nobody is nobody is saying that barriers don't have an effect. The only question is what kind of comprehensive border control would make the most sense. And that's really the big debate. Now, if you believe that wall is part of the solution and many people do is arguing about part of the solution worth shutting down a major part of the United States government. That is what doesn't make much sense. Well. Wall, and you can argue about its merit, and you can argue about its Merrick's in the context of an entire range of other possible assets that you can deploy along the border, but to suggest because I can't have one of the assets that would be useful that merits shutting down a major part of the country, which affects national security, including the department of homeland security itself that is what doesn't make much sense to me it does. But we'll take a break. And we'll be back in a moment. Message and data rates may apply. When did it become ok for men to be Lazier softer fatter?.

If we don't act right now. Bob Costantini, Washington. And so we will speak of what has been said this evening as we talk with the professor, Alan Sanders. He teaches political science at Saint Peter's university in Jersey City, New jersey and was once senior reporter for time magazine. I had the feeling frankly alum that I was watching the Bill Murray booby groundhog's day in which I I tune in tonight. And it was like I have I've been here many many times before other than the fact that the president having have spoken of the possibility of declaring a national emergency did not do. So. Sure, just what I would derive from this that I haven't already derived of either from his remarks or for those of the Democrats. Well, that's good evening. But I think he was trying to reinforce his crew in congress and speak was part of that. Because of course, there have been indications that some Republicans may be wavering and maybe willing to fund the government absent a wall, but basically both sides restated in a formal setting and in a formal way their position, and so I leave publicly this needle didn't move anywhere tonight. The president made note of of going with a steel wall as a concession to Democrats as opposed to two concrete, but the president going back to before he was president even before he was a candidate has always said that what we need is an effective barrier of. And it'll vary from location location in some places. The wall would be fine. Another case was terrain might dictate the chain link fence or or razor wire or some cases natural barriers. I mean, we're not trying to make the cover of better walls and gardens here. It's whatever effectively works. So in that regard. I don't care if it's if it's beautiful or for that matter, if it's quote, ugly, unquote, although it wouldn't be ugly to me, and I don't care whether Mexico pays for it, the savings that we would derive here would be just fine with me, but I would like the most effective border security. So. So. I don't think he's changed in that in that regard from from where he was before. Maybe the emphasis has changed. I would slightly disagree with you on that. I mean, he made the wall the slogan or one of the major slogans of his campaign, and you can't just say, you know, he was for border security, very much a central piece of his conception of border security was the wall what I found interesting about the speech tonight is that for most of the speech, he talked about border security in terms of technology and human assets and more sophisticated ways in which to secure the border wall was almost an afterthought. I was waiting and waiting and waiting when are you going to talk about the wall, and that was a different kind of tiny, really and different kind of speech and the one that he had been given giving on the stump. So I think in some sense there was some movement here from the president in that the wall was not the centerpiece of the speech it was border security. Now, the Democrats will come back and say, of course, and say, that's what we've been talking about all of this time border security, and that's what we really need to talk about. But we need to talk about that with devil. That's open. And so that's the debate. Of course that that we've been having. And of course, if you take away the leverage, obviously, the end of of this discussion because previous democratic congresses in fact, including both of these people have various times rolled different Republican presidents on on the very notion of of this in terms of adequate border security, of course, the bells and whistles are very important. But the idea that you'll have the physical barrier. That tells you nothing other than the fact that if you have drones were cameras or whatever you'll be able to watch people come across. But you won't be the position to do anything about it a barrier actually stops people. It doesn't. But you're the position of having to use some kind of forced to stop them or or just let them come through a barrier there on that side, and we're on this side, and is by far the most benign way, I cannot get over the counter have constantly come especially from speaker Pelosi. Wall is ineffective. A wall is immoral. She tosses out in it bereft of any evidence. Jim hold on. You have to understand that, you know, walls and barriers are certainly useful items and doesn't have to be wall can be a barrier. But understand that most of the United States is not protected by wall. Most people can come to the United States through airplanes ships through Canada, the notion that a wall over a part of the United States boundary will stop all know of illegal immigration doesn't make. Stop stop stop a lot. I don't think. So any look. Massino? No line, and we're not talking about the German army. In point of fact, there are many people who come across that border who have over the years millions of them who have just walked across that border. The other day they tried to bum's rush hour border and it took tear-gas to tournament side. No, it won't stop everybody. But it'll stop an awful lot these things work, and they're very effective. One hundred percent is not part of the litmus test of the human experience. We don't say that because we can't be one hundred percent effective in stopping Bank robberies, rapes or murders. That Lee reason compels us to not try to stop any. It would be an effective barrier. Whatever remains to be seen. I think to have a real discussion on is what kind of barriers what kinds of sophisticated equipment. What kind of human assets would actually work what we are not having right now is any kind of discussion because we're having a government shutdown. Look, Democrats and Republicans disagree on policy across a whole range of issues if anything like that because they can't get their way with the other side of the only way that they're going to operate shut down the entire government. And by the way, endanger the national security and so doing this is indeed such a crisis. Why is the department of homeland security not being funded? Why is the secret service that protects the president not being funded? Why is the American you put in danger? I mean, you thirty percent of the endanger the whole country we percent of your government shutdown and essential essential services. Continue to be provided the t you can still go to any airport and. Get filled up by the TSA. And then once you and your fellow passengers get on the air. You're not going to run into each other because the air traffic controllers are still out there. I mean, let's not not overstate this. Well fortunate. Of this kind of leverage is necessary. But it is I mean when you deal with people who make promises in the past and then violate them. You need leverage. Leverage means cutting shutting down the entire government. I think that we don't we didn't shut down the entire. But we didn't come close to shutting down the entire government. We shut down thirty percent of it. And a non essential part of that. We didn't I. Has being shut down. That's that's creating some real blockages in the United States commerce field. The agriculture department is shut down, and that's going to create some problems for farmers. The IRS is being shut down, and that may create some problems with raising and spending some money. Of course, the entire government is not shut down, but important parts of the government shutdown. Moreover in terms of the TSA still operating and the secret service is still operating. Do you really want to be protected by people who are disgruntled tour facing financial challenges by what to be protected in always including that border. And again, I think it's unfortunate that this has to be employed, but you're dealing with people and we'll get to a call here. Just a second. And then the break, but we're dealing with people here in terms of the Democratic Party leadership or scared to that that they're all going to be Joe Crowley, the defeated by some left winger like Alexandria, Cossio Cortez. And they are aware of the fact that they have. A very vocal if not necessarily strong in numbers open borders constituency, and they're scared to death of doing anything that has affective. I firmly do believe that. And that is why you've seen the change in the in the both the rhetoric and presumably soon, the the voting patterns of the Pelosi's in the Schumer's of the world because they don't wanna get crowded out of office. And they're they're afraid that that'll happen. But I think the same can be said of the president himself. He's he faces a campaign promise that he's not able right now. And he's very fearful that if he's not able to meet that campaign promise, he will also go down to defeat, and so many others allies are well aware of the fact that you don't build a wall everywhere. I mean, we know that there are several Republicans quite a few Republicans. But certainly Sunday already come out publicly in that are basically saying left open up the government. Let's have a discussion this issue. Ultimately, by the way, in my view will ultimately be decided by the American people, whichever side debut. Believe is blocking solution more that they will come down against that side. And that's what will automatically make things move forward. That's twenty twenty. You're talking about. American people don't have any any say so over until twenty twenty two, but they do Jim. That's the way prior shutdowns were ended when one side felt that it was losing the public opinion. I basically gave in or figured out a way to go out of it graceful who blinks first what will decide which you know, where we end. And when we and and how we ended American people through public opinion will make their views known. So we will. We'll we'll see that. That's going to be a hard one to predict Paul calls in from Sioux City, Iowa on the Jim Bohannon show. Good evening, Paul. Good evening. Yeah. Jim I just wanted to say, you're you're a hundred percent tracked. I was at the Vatican recently in Rome. The whole entire city surrounded by a wall. That's probably seventy feet tall forty. But anyway. Forty whatever. Ours is like what ten so the reason it's there because it's defective to say, it's not effective is completely wrong. Pretty pretty irrelevant. But go ahead quickly. Irrelevant. How is that relevant? I that I consider the pope irrelevant. I don't consider your comment irrelevant when the pope decribe walls while he lives. Wall. That's what we're talking about. We're not talking about the boat. Okay. No..

"The Trump White House is promising tax refunds will go out to Americans despite the partial government shutdown. Also Bob Costantini reports. President Trump will lay out his case in prime time tonight for keeping the shutdown going and less he gets border wall money. The president's tweets says he will quote address deletion on humanitarian and national security crisis on our southern border in quote stressing the humanitarian aspect of it. Their union leaders endorsed, President Trump holding out for the wall funding, but White House communications eight Mercedes slap is asked about the hundreds of thousands of other workers who are also worried about when they'll get a paycheck. It is so important that they call the Democrats, and basically tell the Democrats stopped the delay tactics. Let's negotiate seal the nation's largest government worker union is calling on the Senate to defy the president and support house bills that would fund all departments.
