"High ending these episode we as they can with environmentalists Dr Bob Brown. He's written a book with the support of his partner, Paul grade nomads wild places, and it's visiting some of the beautiful places of south and West Australia. Look a little bit about Bob Brown. He's very famous in a strategy. But for our global audience, he's a former medical doctor, and then a very outspoken and successful environmentalist. And then later, he became a politician from which is now resigned he successfully campaigned for a large increase in the protected wilderness area of the strenuous tight of Tasmania, and he reached international notoriety when he was suspended from the stratagem parliament for interjecting during an address by US President, George W Bush. Yeah, Bob had been campaigning at the time to have to strategy. Nationals held at the US base in Guantang. Nimmo bay return to a stranger, and while Bush was talking about the end of Saddam Hussein's regime seems like he's the guy that wasn't ain't right in Iraq. Bob interrupted by saying if you respect the world's laws, the willed will respect you. So this fill is a man who's not afraid to fight for what he believes Nive wonderfully inspiring, many really has been so that's a snapshot of Bob now to the interview the book green nomads wild places came out about after he took a trip on the Sea Shepherd the MVP Steve Irwin's shepherd boat to study the greatest rallying by which had been earmarked for deep-sea drilling for oil and gas now that ship which is part of the world's leading direct action ocean conservation organization, that's mouthful. So that. At just being retired at the time that we spoke with Bob. So we kicked off by asking him. How did he feel about that very bad about the ship? It's it's a happy sadness because such and it's gone so ship and Astrid cruise hundreds if not thousands of wiles in antibody where the Japanese were and still illegally happening ustralian minke wiles and others. So and then then it took us up Kimberly caused to help with the campaign there against the one of the world's biggest gas factories rod in the middle of aboriginal land. And and while the biggest humpback while nursery in the world, and it also took us to the greatest trial invite where we saw these magnificent wildlife. Colonies hull steals. Many species of dolphins. Wiles. Under the Bundy cliffs, they we head an elder of the local aboriginal people with us, and he had a picture of his grandfather's who will while warriors. I sang to the wiles. And so and this is all threatened by drilling in the greatest island bought by the Norwegian company Ecuador side of the campaign guys on about that. But I'll come home to Paul full of stories about it. And as a result, we said off to get rut round, the west coast of Tasmania up the south stranded customer round into Western Australia last year, and this book's a result of that. Just if we can go back from in your career, your medical doctor, and you practice, not only in astronomy about also in the UK at which point. Did you transition into becoming these champion for the? A young author in Launceston. I'll get asked the guy down the Franklin river by guy that couldn't find anybody else in a silly enough to do that. And just transformed it saying to me as the doctor where half the people coming into my office was suffering from anxiety or stomach also blood pressure. The hall Ryan jobs as is ju to anxiety of modern living. It was madness to destroying the biggest repository for allying anxiety in an relaxing us, which is nights yet. That's why we all locked to say. Yeah. And what children to be watching Attenborough billion pictures a night ya not bull? Does this and China SOS on walls and to destroy that to produce more electric city to produce more drug? Factories Saint to me a stupid thing to do. And as a result of Frank with thousands of people involved in that campaign, right across this country and beyond is flowing free and bringing right? A lot of people all rent from all around the world. See you may polling nine hundred ninety six poll, you greens councillor on the human valley council. Is that correct at the time? No, I'm at all before I cut onto Huron valley council. But at the time, I was hoping to helping his campaign for his election to the Senate. The first though is I turn so your ideals. "But your point is your point is will take and my friend. Josh Cochran, just read war story. And he said the next addition of this you got to have a gloss route. Others. I just finished writing my my pre premature memoir, maybe. But I put a glossary in the book for just that reason. Yeah. Well, I I wore story as though it. Well that was in the age of so-called new journalism. You know, Tom Wolfe was doing stuff like the tangerines like streamline baby. And he was writing nonfiction as as though it were fiction than it turned out, some some really great books. Speaking of of new journalism, another thing I really wanted to ask you was about if you could tell us about the experience of going to write for soldier of fortune magazine, and I've met Bob Brown onto occasions. I, and I know he's a very controversial figure, but just to be real. I I really liked the guy impression on me. And I feel like kind of the same way. I feel talking to you. Jim. I feel like I could listen to Bob Brown. Tell stories all day. He's got a. Yeah. Really, really? Yeah. The thing about brand the thing you have to have to know that under. Bob is that he is the world's oldest seventh grader. Just, you know, Bob, okay? When I heard somebody somebody till the or maybe I read it in the paper that some some nut job in boulder. Colorado had established a trade journal mercenaries. And I had this cardboard box full of Vietnam stuff that I'd written and I couldn't sell it anywhere. And I I had sold a couple of stories this choir. But that was in sixty five before before we committed troops and the antiwar movement really got got the rolling, and you couldn't you couldn't get arrested with stuff like that. When you know after I got out. So I called Bob, and I told him I got this box of stuff, and he said great, I'm going to reserve weekend or reserve two weeks this summer, and I'll wing on the way and look at your stuff. This five hundred miles out of his way, and he showed up. Eight assu we had dinner at dinner with me, and we weren't married then, but we were living together me and my girlfriend, and she was amazed at the age of salad with his hands. Fans took my car board box, which I didn't have carbons of and took it back to boulder and it disappeared. And and the next four years I made numerous trips to boulder. For other reasons, but also to look for that stuff, and I never found it, and I was in grad school again. That's always been my escape is when you know when all else fails go to grad school, and you will be surrounded with good looking women who liked to party. So that was working for me. And I got I got a postcard. So we've accepted your story. I didn't even know which story it was. And and they sent me I think it was two hundred bucks, maybe five hundred bucks. I can't remember. But it was the story from which the movie operation Dumbo drop was made. Mhm? And in later, I bought the whole box, basically and. Some stories. They bought didn't publish for more than a year and sent back to me. And I waited another year the The kid. kid. So I've been paid twice for. I mean that was so chaotic Jim graves was the editor when I really started working for us. Oh, f and graves said they're bringing money in here in buckets, you know, and Brown was like backing guerrilla movements in. And you know, I mean, literally he had he had a guerrilla battalion. It was totally financed by soldier fortune that there's a little well there's a little bit about that and double secret name. But I wasn't a part of that deal. So I just know about second hand if it makes you feel any better, Jim. I wrote an article about George Washington bacon, who fought with MAC v SOG Vietnam and ended up dying in and Gola working as personality, and I sent the article to Bob Brown and Bob Brown wanted he wanted to publish it. And he lost it, even though I sent it by Email..
