"Help people to the pandemic. The payouts would go to California residents making less than $75,000 a year. While the numbers are very clear this morning, California Funeral homes are overwhelmed is covert cases. Surge all across the state? Can't be case Aubrey Aquino joins us now, Aubrey. Good morning. I know you did some digging, made some phone calls. Let's talk about Northern California, the funeral industry here. How is it being affected? Well, we've heard the stories out of Southern California refrigeration trucks being called in to handle. Ah, flood of bodies a slower process to remove and bury those who have passed. And while it's not as bad here in Sacramento, the head of the state's funeral directors association says march are starting to have a tough time keeping up. The first heard hit in the summer. I think General Holmes acquired additional storage capacity during the despite continue, so they were in better shape when this started, but I don't think anybody really expected No, the bawling and look desk that has occurred. And so certainly I think more so again in Southern California, there are refrigerated vehicles in some hospital parking lots. There are funeral homes that have brought on additional capacity over and above what they added. In the summer, and they're still being overwhelmed. Bob Ackerman admits the industry is being completely impacted from top to bottom from planning funeral services to holding them. The options are limited. Cremation is, um you know an option, but even that is being taxed. You know, in terms of capacity just to handle, you know all all there all the people have died, so it's really a great, very difficult situation. He says here in Sacramento area and in the Bay Area there, certainly seeing ah big increase in volume, But at least for now, it's nothing like what they're experiencing in L. A county. So Aubrey will our local funeral homes be prepared to handle and even higher number of requests if the situation here becomes more dire? Ackerman says he believes Sacramento funeral businesses are prepared for it and they're dealing with it in the short term, But in southern California, they're still seeing cases where they can't handle the capacity so they have to remain as vigilant as possible. You know, Holmes, you know, have to safeguard their own staff and all this process If they lose somebody to covert either symptoms or heaven forbid death just can't replace these people. These were all trained professionals. No license. You just can't bring people in to help out for short term, so it's keeping the family safe the staff safe and still trying to help them navigate the process. He also mentioned his organization is working closely with Cal. Oh, yes, who've been setting up mobile morgues and helping with staffing shortages, But people working in the industry are using as much caution as possible to stay well and keep serving in the community. All right, Aubrey. Thank you very much. Appreciate the update, You know that Just that throws another wrench into it. At a time when people are grieving, I mean, covered 19 aside if you lose a loved one to another illness. It's a It's a tough time to begin with. All right, right. And you make a good point. I mean, if you lose someone to cancer or heart attack or so forth, I mean, you still have to abide by all these covert protocols and the grieving process. Now you're not bringing the family and friends together, right? So at least having to do so. "And what role do you think traditional diplomacy does or should plan that particularly since we now have a president who has an unconventional approach to foreign relations effect I. I'm being conservative. there was a senior position in the state department too. negotiate on cyber security. secretary of state rex tellers some eliminated that position. there was a position look kind of was the evolution of my old job in the White House called cyber is our own quote. to. shape our international policy in our in our domestic policy on cyber security. national security adviser John Bolton eliminate about jobs. so there's not a lot of cyber security diplomacy going on. I think we need it. well I think we need rules of the road. the old enough to have participated in nuclear arms control with the Soviet Union. and when we started that everybody said you'll never get there. the Russians can't be trusted you can verify this stuff the liver agree to reduce they'll never agree to limit. and Ronald Reagan's. said no I think it's worth trying. and we got there. we got nuclear arms control it was verifiable we put limits on things we created rules of the road confidence building measures risk reduction measures. I think we can do that in cyberspace. but it will be a long process diss nuclear arms control was but you have to start. and I would start not with Russia or China or run their North Korea I would start with our friends now if we have any left well I would start with like minded nations. and get them together and agree on the rules of the road. and agree on procedures and agree on what we together collectively will do. June scofflaws. two. cyber outlaws. you know today if we know that. a company in San Francisco was hacked by a particular Russian. not not even the government person but a Russian criminal. we issued an arrest warrant. we served on the Russians in Moscow. they rip it up. they throw the waste basket. if we do that in Japan if we do in in Germany they go arrest the the people for us. we need to get together with other like minded nations and say to Russia and China and other people who are international outlaws if you're going to act that way there will be consequences I'm not talking about packing them I'm talking about limiting their access to our site respects. the radical proposal in the book that week somehow define a community of nations that respects law and respect each other and we allow those nations free access to the same internet. but nations like Russia and China if they don't play by the rules. their access to our internet is controlled rate limited and models. it's very hard to do technically I know that but I think it's worthless it's worth thinking about them that's why there's a chapter in the book. but how is that possible when it seems that this administration is up absolutely fixated on denying that Russian particular influence the election and as a source of disinformation and hacking is is there a future in which that sort of diplomacy is possible in twenty twenty one. well that's an excellent segue. the elections. what are the chances that the twenty twenty election is going to be hacked a hundred percent. and how do you think that's going to manifest built. I don't think it'll be exactly what happened in twenty sixteen but it will resemble twenty sixty so let's let's go through what happened in twenty sixteen. we all know it but just to level side here. the Russians went on social media. and pretended to be Americans. and the micro targeted because on Twitter and Facebook you can micro target. geographically ethnically racially. the micro targeted American voters. and for African American voters they sent the message that the Clintons don't like black people. which if you know the Clintons could not be any more untrue. but they targeted this in a very persuasive way they talked about the Clinton's role in Haiti which actually was very good but they made fake news about it. and they sent messages to specific African American communities like. South Philadelphia West Philadelphia. saying don't vote. don't vote. the Clintons don't deserve black votes. in more progressive communities was let's say the Philadelphia main line more fancy places where people worry about climate change they went after voters that they knew were in concern about climate change. and told them Hillary is going to win. but you need to make a statement about climate change by voting for the Green Party. the if you take a look at. Michigan Ohio and Pennsylvania. and you look at the Green Party vote. the difference between Hillary winning in those three states and losing was the Green Party vote. if you look at the number of African Americans who voted for years earlier. and then look at the number that voted in that campaign in twenty sixteen there's a huge drop. they did voter suppression. they did voter transfer. and they encouraged people on the other side to get out the vote. so when people say to me social media how could you throw an election by playing around the Facebook. they did. twenty sixteen was the first presidential election where the majority of voters got their news in large part from social media. so that's what they did in social media but that's only part of what they did. the Russian intelligence services hacked into the campaign of the Clinton. they hacked John Podesta the campaign manager took his emails distorted them out of context release them through wikileaks in in joining us on your London. we know there are much after the fact that they hacked their way into the databases the voter registration databases of thirty nine states. yeah willow they did. when they got into the database is the the election commissioners in thirty nine states will say they did nothing. well the reason the election commissioners say they did nothing is the election commissioners had no way of knowing. they had no sophisticated tracking cyber software. do you know what even that they had been hacked. not that those thirty nine states knew they racked. FBI knew they were hacked. it's very easy to say nothing happened on my network if you have no way of knowing what happens on your network. why would they want to play around with voter registration. let's imagine a very close election. they can be song by a couple of states. when you go into the precincts where your opponent is going to do well. and you mess around with the voter database so the names disappear. those people show up to try to vote they have to fill out forms they have to complain there's a hubbub. the line gets longer and longer and longer. and at some point. people look at the long line and turn around go home it's a method of voter suppression. will they do all that again. I think so. the house. has passed the bill. give money to the fifty states only four thousand counties. because the elections are really run by counties most places. the ball I cyber security equipment. so that they can lock down their networks. states and the counties don't have the money for that. that bill is. would pass the Senate if it came up for vote Republicans Marco Rubio for example has said all vote for. but Mitch McConnell the Republican leader in the Senate will not bring the but the bill up for a vote. not I've been a house loan a couple of interviews on TV why do you think that is. I'm sorry actually gone back and looked at what he says what is justification. he says I will have our elections become federal excuse me. their federal elections. we're electing the president. in the Congress and the Senate so that leads me to believe that maybe there's another reason why the Republican leader of the Senate doesn't want to have our states be able to stop the Russians from affecting our elections. let's let's go back to the valley you mentioned the VC money I'm playing a huge role and the security systems there a few times in the book you also I would I would characterize it may be is Makine some of the Silicon Valley of philosophies like Google's don't be evil and even mocking some of the V. sees who just want to have cyber security companies and their portfolio to what role do you think Silicon Valley has in putting us in the state where we are today one block down the Embarcadero is ABC company called the leeches and the guy who runs it is Bob Ackerman hello this Bob here. I don't talk about the movies they'll go ahead we interviewed Bob for the book and Bob is one of. ten of people in venture capital in this country who really understands cyber security technology hi he is done it from the from the beginning that is a great success with great companies and what he said was. venture capital firms now one have cyber security companies on their board of logos on their investments. because to attract investors venture capital firms have to go out and raise money. to attract investors they think they need to be able to say and we have a cyber security company because a lot of cyber security companies have done well. just last month crowd strike cyber security company had the IPO and the first day was went from a two billion dollar valuation to a thirteen billion dollar valuation. so understandably venture capital firms I think they need to say we have in money invested in cyber security what Bob Ackerman says in the book is most of them have no idea how to invest in cyber security. and so any to Stanford graduates who can rub two sticks together and say we have an idea for cyber security company there's a venture capital firm somewhere that will give you money seven if you are bored. add to one star cyber security company just come up with some silly idea and go down to the sand hill road and you'll get a check of. and you'll you'll be one of the three thousand cyber security companies about what Bob says is this is sort. and it's it's it's harmful because it draws talent into all these companies that we really need we don't have this much talent on cyber security we really need to concentrate that tell in the handful of companies that can really survive and create really good products he calls it spreading the peanut butter two things and I think is right look without venture capital firms without San Francisco without follow although we would not have ventured we would not have cyber security companies that's that's how they created and we have a great cyber security companies like crowd strike on that are making it possible to defend successfully. so there's good news but this also bad news because there's a lot of silly money going to solely companies you gave the federal government some pretty bad grades in terms of its security preparedness if they at U. M. and we also know the president has criticized the FBI and some the intelligence agencies and some people have said that that makes it harder to recruit our bright young minds to do exactly the work that you line up and if it's true that China's going to beat us to the machine learning a I race how does that play out do we just is there and is the only winner winner takes all the first one to the bag no I don't think so I mean the truth is if if Google won't work on artificial intelligence Raytheon will. our lucky well and the first country to get an artificial intelligence program is not going to win some more well it's a cumulative effect though it's not one weapon system of. but. the future is going to be dominated by robotics. my machine learning. our quantum computing. and we need to be in that race not just to sell products not just so that Amazon can ship you to space faster mud so that we can defend democracies around the world so that our military can remain strong double trouble always be present. and the United States will come back and we'll fight for human rights and civil liberties around the world and we need to be strong to do that. so you. you mention Clinton computing and also we're we're on the verge of this five G. world how does that complicate all of these issues even more so. great question we would I said earlier where the moment where you can defend yourself if if you're a corporation and you know how to do it. and you spend the right amount of money. but that moment is fleeting because technology is always moving on. errant when technology moves on it opens up possibilities both good and bad. also with quantum computing that please don't ask me to explain quantum computers. I spent all the don't ask me to. is I spent a lot of time writing that one chapter in the book on quantum computing and I just I had to learn it well enough to explain it. well I had to explain it in terms that anybody reading book anybody reading the book could understand that was the hardest job of writing I've ever done go I hope I succeeded you be the judge but autumn computing will allow us..
