"A reminder that elections really matter all the way down the ballot so listening to mir romero So glad the citizens of tucson chose to lead that city because she's following the science not the pollsters or thinking about you know her her prospects or or the next office. She's just trying to do the right thing right now. And i think that describes all these school board trustees across the state of texas county judges and mayors and city council members who are doing the right thing and for that matter the citizens who go to these public meetings and apply the public pressure necessary to form the political will sometimes to to do the right thing so very very grateful or mira meadows leadership in example and mayor. No offence taken about your description of texas. It's absolutely accurate. I mean not only do. We lead the country in pediatric hospitalizations combined with florida. We are forty percents of all new cases in the country right now so we need better leadership and you're providing kind of example. We seem to have lost. The mayor's signal once again. I'm struck by the fact that both of you have kids around the same age Which certainly sharpens your focus on this the issues especially for the under twelve a population. But that really should not matter. It shouldn't be because you have an eleven year old because you have a ten year old. You are more concerned about the fifty million kids under the age of twelve in this country. The perfect word for you care no matter what but it certainly sharpens or raises the urgency in the action that she wants to take and thinking about our son henry who's ten years old I asked amy the other day. This is prior to the mass requirement. Provisioning passed by the el paso in school district. Board of trustees has said no. Should we take henry out of school because he's wearing a mask all day but not all his classmates are in. The teachers got her her hands tied in terms of enforcing any kind of real public health guidance. In that classroom in fact she is afraid even to perhaps report to the principle that a child is showing symptoms of ovid because it might contravene. The governor's mandate so so yes. It is really personal and it's personal for countless across this country right now. So let's do the right thing. Let's follow the science. That's where masks are indoors encourage. Vaccinations for those who are eligible for these vaccines. And let's get rid of the politics and just do the right thing while we still have time to aurore. Thank you very much for journalists. And i'd really appreciated our. Thanks to tucson regina romero for joining this conversation and when we come back. Our next guest is.

"Just don't like it I. Don't like sending my valid in there, even though you can check on the counter on the on the secretary of State's website, you can check your voting history and you can see when your ballot has been received I I did this check. I went on and check then turns out. My ballot has been received so so there, but there's some people who just prefer the in person voting and they'll have an. An opportunity to do that on primary election day on on June ninth. Yeah, and I think you're totally right about the the nobody having any sort of idea what to expect in the playbook ring. Toss out, because obviously they're still pandemic and I. I had an interesting conversation. We I. You know I read the story about this last week. When the turn out was only about twelve and a half percent or so and I, and I did speak to Robert Lang, who's a professor at unlv in? The institutes over there and some of the interesting things that he told me was just essentially that we nobody knows nobody knows even you know what voter behavior is going to be like in a sense of it's generally believed and the various lawsuits flying around in this. County and state, which will also get into a little in the next segment. You know seem to indicate that you know a lot of male bows lot of. Balloting favors Democrats think. Democrats believe that it does I think Republicans believe that it does, but if you look at, you, know how it's breaking down in the state in terms of. Total Democrats Total Republicans. It's only forty three percent damn and forty-one percent Republicans are lot. That's not. You know by by no means a big boost for Democrats who have a larger registration advantage than that I think it's like five or six percent or something like that, and so I, it definitely is interesting to see you know who's GonNa be! Favored hearing here the races. You know certainly for Congress in Clark County, you know it's democratic incumbents, and so it's those Republicans who are having a contested primary. Who need you know certain who need a boost rather WANNA get their voters out or get the other guys voters? God's will just sort. See what happens. I mean it's just wild. Because the other thing about this whole lead up to an election is a it's almost the second sort of afterthought, because there's not events I mean we should be having. Forums and debates, and like you know people should be out flooding the airwaves and stuff all this week, and it's just as I've noticed. It's just not really happening because it's just a completely different animal. You've had to stretch your campaigning over a month. You know events are are still against the rules. At least large ones, and so I have no idea what's going to happen. Yeah, no, you're absolutely right. The this is definitely not your typical election. In the primary, there aren't a rallies. There aren't you know in person. gatherings where candidates can speak. There aren't forums that you would normally have seen. Sometimes some of the temples and synagogues and churches have forums. You haven't seen any of those things because of the the covid outbreaks. So you know you've got the you've got the pandemic in the background. And then you've got the male voting that happened as a result of the pandemic, and so it's just uncharted territory. I'm glad you brought up the the total turnout because Clark County sends out every day. The the turnout figures, and it looks you know if you look at those, it looks pretty good for Democrats. Now remember, this is the primary, so it's not Democrat versus Republican. It's just a matter of total turnout. In Clark County Democrats on nearly eighty, six thousand have turned out whereas Republicans sixty one thousand have so. It looks like a big advantage, but you've got to consider that Clark. County is is got way more Democrats than Republicans and so you would expect that turn out. In fact you might expect to be even better, so there's some people on twitter who who have. Criticized those figures that I put out from Clark. County is misleading, and so let's let's correct the record here on the podcast by saying statewide. Democrats have turned out both male and in-person. This is the grand totals now. A hundred, eighteen, thousand, six, hundred, seventy, eight and Republicans are right behind him right on their heels, I'll. Not Thousand Two hundred and thirty nine. As you pointed out, there are only two percentage points behind. You've got nonpartisan and other with forty four forty five thousand votes roughly that sixteen percent of the total. Turnout. So far. That percentage by the way will rise when it comes to the general election, because remember non-partisan voters can't vote in the Republican or Democratic primary, so if you're looking at county commission races, there's a democratic and Republican primary. You can't vote in their state legislature. Same Thing Congress same thing you can really vote for the non partisan races. Those the judges Sim Court. Family Court District Court School Board Trustees Religion Board of Education members, nonpartisan offices, and so there's less to draw you know non-partisans out to the election at this point and so naturally that turn is depressed. I think you'll see a much higher nonpartisan turn out when it comes to the general, and we're talking all the candidates running a the same time, but but yes statewide the turnout between Democrats and Republicans is almost even and and again not that it matters because Democrats are turning out to vote Democrats. Republicans are turning out to vote for Republicans and everybody gets a chance to vote in the nonpartisan races, so were the partisan divide, the partisan advantage, the partisan based or not. We're really important is not going to be till. Till November and I I did also notice that Wa- show which I believe. Democrats got a registration advantage. Very recently and A. Very small very small. You see there's currently right now. Eleven hundred more Republican ballots submitted than there are Democrats so so age do not necessarily now now favor for one party, or the other as you said, it's very very very close, and.

Let's talk now a set us a message will it will see if we can get you some time on the podcast. That'd be just fantastic hundred percent. We're gonna have a table in everything. We're gonna be like it's pretty legit legit. Exactly. I'm the leave -able because opening tomorrow voting. Why voted yesterday? Yeah, you can do I, if Yup, Yup. Yup. So a municipal elections. So we have federal elections, they're actually a year from now. Actually, I think that they are almost exactly a year from now. Okay. And then there were the provincial elections that were just a few months ago, and this is the municipal elections. So this is a city councils? Yep. City councils, mayors and school board trustee. So district I those words are in trouble school board trustees and the Catholic board trustees. Some that happens that that election is is tomorrow that is. Moderately exciting. We have a really good where we actually have like buries a big city. Relatively speaking. I mean were were in the hundred eighty hundred seventy five thousand people. I think pretty big being not not a small city, and we have one of the best mares in Canada in terms of like being like competent and qualified, and just he's a good dude like is really good at his job. So he's basically running uncontested, which is cool. I'm fine with that. I mean he's doing a wicked job discount to be a lot of change over at our city council like I can see coming already. So that'll be interesting in. Yeah. And the school board trustee elections. So and my name is on the ballot, which is strange on the school yet because I was I was planning. On running for the trustee, and then you know, things changed with, you know, some work things that I'm gonna talk about, not this podcast but later on Benchley and, and you know. So that meant that because there is going to be a bit of a conflict of interest. I kinda backed out of the school board, but it was before the cutoff date. So my name is still on the ballot. So you know, I, I may actually still win technically I could possibly win the trustee election, why it'd be actually not saying very many good things about the competitors who were running against me if I won and I didn't campaign school board trustees become a school board members. I suppose a. They run a campaign to in Canada? Yup. Okay. Yeah, selected. So I mean, do they go like door knocking and that kind of stuff? Or do they just put on just have a. You know, like a like a forum because we have like a local one here too. That's happening at the writings few days where they kind of just discuss a variety of different issues in their take on them, you know? But I would say that can boast campaign. I would say that most trustees campaign a little, yes. You know the budgets for a municipal like a city council person in berry. They usually spend somewhere between eight and eleven thousand dollars on a on a municipal on the city council campaign hookah. Sorry as an educator? No, you didn't. This experiences taught me that I still have a lot to learn, honest to God. What. He's a grown adult in a long time to learn this sixties at least what. How can you learn sixties? That means he had first hand experience with with how this country separates black and white people. The comments were wrong and inappropriate and I've been a basement Bubba. My comments were not only uninformed, but also hurtful. I understand now why they were offensive to so many people. I would like to know another time in his life when he said, quote, uninformed and hurtful. Probably about like learning something a restaurant and the chick. Wait. Is this what you call an egg roll? Fuck sorry. I'm on informed and hurtful. I'd like to apologize directly to the Shawn Watson, like he gives a shit. I recognize that given the opportunity to respond by criticizing or belittle belittling me, he chose peace and positively instead and spite of the terrible position I put him in. He showed himself to be the kind of role model. I'd be proud of for any of my students to follow. It was mighty white of him. Goodness. He goes on and on doesn't tripling down. Also, I want everyone to know that my comments and they'll way reflect the nature of the school district or the community. These are careful, thoughtful communities. There's no place for racism moving forward. I believe it is in the district's best interest that I resigned from my position. At least that's Tolten accordingly. I hereby Sma resignation bubble, blah. I'd like to thank the school board trustees yadda yadda yadda. I hope I'm remembered for my body of work over forty two years in public education rather than my unwarranted in inappropriate comments. No deal. Promise. Actually, I don't see that happening playing air like you didn't. You didn't mind throwing this guy into the bus, but now that you're leaving, please remember me well jerseys. Those New Jersey's. Great. I'm an educator. They don't say this guy's role, but somebody at the meeting them, Tony Kelly said, and I quote, I don't believe it was a racist comment. I just believe it was a sensitive comment. Misplaced what he said supposedly was supposed to have been in private with friends. Another. Yeah, they resigned. Whatever they are. All that's beautiful. I love that these guys, especially because he said, you know, this isn't a place where these kinds of things happened in someone went, but I, this is what we always talk about who recorded it was sensitive in this day and age. You can't just put stuff on there and he thought it was only two friends, not the general public he went..

"board trustees" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"The pride passion than patron Torri of college football lives here is though Paul finebaum show our three podcast what a bag we are. We've had a busy show and a lot of news happening all over the place depending on where you're feeling information at this hour more tomorrow on fire or tonight. I really couldn't tell you right now. There's so many things happening, and this is late August. It's usually a very quiet time. We're heading to Columbus shortly a as John mentioned Bill Clark will also join us and David oven talking about a number of things, but just a scene set. The urban Meyer story broke nearly three weeks ago and it was determined a couple of days into it that they would have some sort of determination, two weeks in two weeks ended on Sunday. This six person committee, including three trustees has handed. Over its report where where they interviewed a number of the not a number, all the key participants to the board of trustees and the president that meeting is tomorrow, and we're delighted to be joined by the very distinguished writer from Columbus. He is Tim, May he has covered the buckeyes for more than thirty years. We had him on a couple of weeks ago and we are thrilled to have him back, Tim. I know it's a crazy time. Let's let's just talk a little bit about what your newspaper has been reporting, including you and your colleagues about about how this process has unfolded as we say Hello to you? Good afternoon. Good afternoon ball. I mean, I, I didn't write the story today that had the Thurston that that did retweeted. But at the assertion that the board trustees might seek a suspension and our time served up penalty or time serve penalty for and Meyer. But you know, the more I hear about this thing basically, I'm hearing is urban Meyer followed, you know, follow the letter of the law is written out by how state. I mean as far as protocol goes, like you said, you know, three weeks ago or two and a half weeks ago and you know, I would not be surprised to see him. I don't think Zonta rate is the right word because this isn't illegal forum, but I wouldn't be surprised to maybe see him come out of this ready to go back on the field maybe as early as wins the afternoon or Thursday. But you know, who knows man when a comedian involved in then aborted, just he's involved and then ultimately the president university, you're not really sure how things are going to go and what they finally zero in on his said on your show. Oh, like what? Last week or couple of weeks ago. Yeah, Jim, listen, we're delighted to have you on because yours plugged into this program as you can possibly be, and I'm listening to you very closely and hearing what you're saying. Well, wait a minute you're closely. And I'm basically what I'm saying is I really still don't know exactly what's going to come down tomorrow. It was a lot of words about to give you a lot of credit by the way. But you're there and you know, sometimes you can. Sometimes you can't read the tea leaves, but if we hear you correctly, the wind seems to be blowing firmly in urban Meyer favors that fair. Well, you know, I said, I think sit on your show last time I was on. I know I've said it a bunch of times if you took urban Myers statement at its word and believed it means the one, the the long statement he issued on August, third, and then what you what you understood about. You know, like I said, the whole mechanics of the thing, for example, or the issues in the thing. For example, Zac Smith was never arrested or charged in two thousand fifteen incident. Those are just examples. Then it kinda makes you wonder why urban Meyer was on paid administrative leave in the first place. Clearly the university had some questions they wanted answered, but this has been a very thorough way. Understood. I wrote a story about that in today's paper at dispatch dot com. Where basically, you know these these guys who interviewed the witnesses that were brought forth. We're extremely thorough, extremely prepared. For example, there was a report, you know, as you well know last Friday about some of Zach Smith situ. While I'm trying to figure out a Nike way Murray report about sex toys, take pictures of himself. One is the most important thing as far as I'm concerned was the the revelation..
