"But Carl, he's someone who, if I were to draw up a list of guys who I think are going to have huge seasons, he might be right near the top because we know how motivated he's going to be coming off that lost 2022 season. Right. And look, I think buster, the operative word in all of these things is motivation. And whether it's because you self inflicted damage to yourself and you couldn't perform, whether it's because you are hurt and now are healthy, well, there's clearly players who are in free agent years that are motivated to do as well as they can and unfortunately, it implies that there are years where they're not as motivated as they would be in this particular season. And that part kind of sucks. I don't necessarily understand why every game and every year, you're not as motivated as you would be. But there are clear factors that increase level of motivation. He certainly is motivated. The same way that Nick Castellanos is motivated the same way that Jack clarity is motivated for different reasons, but you'll understand there's kind of a heightened level of motivation. Adam Wainwright and his last year, he's always motivated. Maybe there's another level of motivation because I want to leave on a high note. These are all very individual concepts of what's motivating me, but yes, he's certainly in the top three or four players who have every right and reason to be motivated. Yeah, my son does fantasy baseball. And I've told him, you should drag nanotechnology. Junior, you should jump a couple of rounds to get him because I could see him being huge. I could see Manny Machado. A year in which he's now going to be surrounded all year by an improved lineup having tattoos junior hitting in front of him. You know, I assume Soto's hidden in front of him maybe Xander Bogart's heating behind him. It's an opt out year for him. I could see him going big. I spent a couple days with Carlos Correa last week. I think he's going to have a huge year. You can feel his investment in 2023 based off of what happened this wintertime, maybe wanting to prove people wrong. You know, maybe because he's another guy buster. Dansby Swanson, you know, anybody that was that was passed over. Xander bogarts is motivated because the Red Sox didn't pay him. Dan's response is going to be motivated to show the brave screwed up, you know? And so again, a very individual, but yeah, all the names you're talking about absolutely fit into that group of there's real reason to and your son and the fantasy is a perfect example. Find somebody coming off a down year. Find somebody who's got this other level of motivation, then it's another baseball season and I'm trying to put up numbers. Kyle Tucker, the Astros is someone I sort of had pegged because of the depth in that lineup now, now that you had a Jose Abreu to you're down Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, you know, I saw him a couple times last week. He looks terrific. They feel like he's going to be able to come back and play. You know, you hope he can stay healthy. You know, the fact that he's going to have a good right handed hitter probably batting behind him in the lineup. Maybe that's going to turn out to be Jose Abreu. I think Kyle Tucker is going to have a huge year in vault into the top ten and the MVP conversation the American League. Bo Bichette, you know, who last year as good as his overall numbers were, there's some ups and downs. And I think there's something to prove for Beau in terms of his defense. I agree. And I could see him having a big year. And we talked on the podcast about Corey Seeger and how he is projected by a lot of these analytical systems as having being a guy who's really going to benefit from the change in the defensive shift rules and what you can do there. I can see Corey Seeger having a big year. Yeah, I would absolutely see most left handed hitters having bigger years than they did when they were they were shifted. And those are some of the bigger names in baseball. I think some of these rule changes and this is another big name who I think is going to benefit dramatically as a guy like Trey Turner. Just to literally the bigger bases, I have Trey Turner is a 40 40 guy. I think that ballpark is conducive to Homer's truest park is conducive to homers. There's a couple of other parks in the division he plays in now. I think he'll steal 40 bags. He was he's been very close before. Corbin Carroll's a name that we don't throw around very often in Arizona, but that's a dude that can absolutely fly his defense is incredible. I think he's another guy that I would put on a list. If you look at Cincinnati, there's not a lot to look forward to, but hunter green was ridiculous in September and October last year. And throws a hundred plus miles an hour. Because I think in New York and you know how I feel about this guy, but Michael king was this valuable reliever when he was pitching as there was last year, and he dealt with that terrible elbow injury, but he didn't need Tommy John surgery. He's back throwing again. I think he has the best stuff on the on the entire staff. I think that's an all star this year. So this is just a couple of other names of guys that I think are going to have big years this year who may not be the Fernando tatis juniors of the world. All right, I'm going to throw some over under that you in a moment with team wins based on projections coming out of Vegas. But before we do that, I want to ask you about conversation happening in the Yankees camp about the Yankees mulling the possible move of Aaron judge to left field when Giancarlo Stanton needs to play in the field and potentially in the Yankee Stadium. As you know, if Stanton is in the, you know, plays a defensive position playing in right field. There's less room to cover in that ballpark and judge indicated a reporter that he's totally fine if that's something Aaron Boone wants to do. Carl, I got to tell you like this is surprised me that it's taken this long for this conversation to take place. It always made more sense to me that the better defender you want to have playing a left field versus right field in Yankee Stadium. Yeah, man, look, I think that was personnel driven for the most part because they felt they had a less yield or prior to Bader showing up when you could move hicks over there. It was a really good defensive player. That was an issue if you're just talking about Bader Stanton and judge what Stanton's playing. Absolutely makes perfect sense. And he proved he could play center field, let alone left field. So and he's that type of person. He's that player. He's got that contract. I'm sure if they said Aaron, we'd like to think about you, maybe at first base he'd say, sure. You tell me what's best for this team that's going to help us win.

"Lastly, just following up on John Angelo doing a rare address to the media and fumbling it. John Henry of the Red Sox, who we mentioned because he is on the new economic reform committee. He sort of did the same thing, except he's not making himself available to the press in person. He just conducted some email interviews with a couple of outlets, including the athletic, and he tried to argue that the fans are getting it all wrong and the Red Sox really do spend, which of course they do relative to some teams, and that they haven't cheaped out, but they also won't spend Steve Cohen money. Maybe the most amusing part was where he protested too much about being booed, Jen McCaffrey, who was conducting the Q&A said the booing at winter weekend was hard to ignore. Did you recognize that that level of frustration existed from some of the fan base and does it motivate you to do anything differently and Henry responded again via email so he had time to construct this response. There is a false narrative surrounding the club. It really took hold in 2022. There were even false reports of booing at Fenway Park during the winter classic. I think those factors and losing Xander de San Diego were the biggest factors. Those are the fans he would believe are the least likely to try to shout us down, but it happened. Did anyone report the standing ovation at the end, so there he was talking about the winter weekend event where Red Sox brass got booed and the booze were then edited out of the nest and rebroadcast, but the winter classic hockey game at Fenway Park it was widely reported that Henry was booed. I saw a video of some heckling. I didn't see a video of the booing, but I believe that it happened given how many people reported it, and he's saying those were false reports, which is kind of amusing because last month, when the Red Sox signed Raphael Devers to their extension and held a press conference, which Henry was not at team chairman Tom Werner was, and he rejected the idea that the booing was what prompted the red sacks to sign Devers because there's negotiations were already in progress, but he didn't deny that the booing occurred, and he even said, by the way, owners get booed, and that's part of the deal. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. So maybe Werner should talk to Henry about the booing. I don't think owners are dissembling or blundering any more than they ever did, but I think fans and media members have gotten more skeptical and more likely to interrogate them and hold them to account, which could be why some of them have all but stopped talking to the press and the public, which in the cases of Angeles and Henry might not be a bad idea. Also, Ken Rosenthal wrote a column about Corbyn burns and arbitration. It's a broader look at the way arbitration went down this winter, which was not in the favor of the players. They won 6 cases and lost 13, which is the worst they've done in a normal arbitration year in about a decade and Ken ran through the reasons why, but it sounds like this is contributing further to tensions between players and owners that could again come to a head after the CBA expires. There is some sentiment in favor of doing away with the arbitration system and replacing it with some sort of set system where players would get paid automatically based on stats, which was something that was floated during the recent round of bargaining and seems like something that the players will not go for, although Bo Bichette, who recently avoided arbitration and a hearing by signing an extension with the Blue Jays that bought out his remaining arbiters. He called arbitration and incredibly flawed process, one that isn't very good for the game and he added there's no reason to pit owners and executives against players just no reason. Well, maybe there's a better way to do it, but on the whole, I think arbitration has helped players and the reason to pit owners and executives against players in some way at least is that it's your typical labor versus management relationship owners and executives want to pay players less. Players want to make more. It's inherently adversarial to some degree. But your relationship with this podcast is not adversarial. In fact, it could be the opposite of that. "When I saw that Sarah, I was like, is that really breaking? Artie Miranda's saying he wants to keep the most popular player in the world. Woohoo. This is brand new information. I for one am shocked. Well, we had this strange comment already did as well. He said, I'd like to say we have as good a chance as anybody. Actually, you'd like to, if you're already, you'd like to be able to say, we have a better chance than anybody since you've been playing with their team for a while, and they're the one team right now that can actually negotiate with them. We'll be talking during the course of the podcast about all that. The Dodgers agreed to turns with infielder Miguel Rojas and a $6 million one year deal that takes him through the 2024 season. I already was under contract for 2023. The Dodgers also announced they're going to retire the number 34 Jersey of pitcher Fernando Valenzuela. I think this is pretty cool. You know, I've said in the podcast before I grew up a huge Dodger fan Fernando in 1981 Fernando mania. That was just amazing. Pitcher max fried lost to the braves again in salary arbitration. He'll do okay $13.5 million this year as he moves closer to free agency. Shortstop Bo Bichette avoided arbitration on Tuesday night, agreeing to a three year deal with the Blue Jays. This was big news in Baltimore. Or you'll CEO John angelos and his brother Lou angelos agreed to end their fight over lawsuit in which Lou accused John of season control of the team and defiance of his father, Peter angelos wishes. There is speculation that this settlement in the speculation within the industry that it could facilitate the sale of the team. Not necessarily the move of the team, but the sale of the team, at some point. On Monday, Jeff Patton's interview with Metz owner Steve Cohen was published on ESPN dot com in which Cohen addressed his big spending and his record setting payroll. Here's a clip from that interview that Jeff did with Steve Cohen. We're in New York. And I'm competitive. And listen, if you're going to go on a team, my view, I came in with a commitment. I came in with a commitment that I was going to put a good product on the field. And I think I've done that. I had no idea it was a cost to put a good product on the field. Saying that I'm in a position where I make a good income, right? So. I can do this. Cohen talked about building a pipeline of talent, perhaps reducing spending. You'll hear Jeff ask a follow up question. Getting to the point I'd love to develop some pitching. Pitching is really expensive. And I don't know why we can't. Other people can. At some point, we will. And so the goal is to eventually get our payroll down to something more normalized. For a New York team. Yeah, what is normalized? I don't know. What I thought was normalized turned out to be a lot higher. I don't know the answer to it. I always say this. I don't create the world. I got to live in it. I have no idea. Yeah, what's interesting is when you talk with executives other teams that they laugh at the idea that Cohen, at some point, is going to pare back on a spending. He talked about the industry criticism that he's been hearing. First, you know, what everyone else is heard. They're not happy with me. And I'm not sure exactly I talk. I'm not sure. I hear things like from people who are maybe more neutral that they're taking a lot of heat from their fans. And that's what it is. And I kind of look at that. You're looking at the wrong person. Okay, just be they're putting it on me. Maybe they need to look more at themselves. Sierra, what else you got? Well, buster, do you know what Sunday is? Any guesses? Thanks for Super Bowl. Who you got? Who we got chiefs or eagles? I'm going chiefs. I'm going chiefs just because, listen, I love the Kelsey brothers, but Travis Kelce has a special place in my heart ever since that little clip with his niece, went viral. "Record number of good rookies as well. But, you know, we talked about the difficulty of The Rookie of the year races with strider versus Harris and Richmond versus Julio. And it's not just those guys. It's a couple other guys in that mix as well. So historic prep of productive rookies. So enjoy it. Yeah, here I am being like, it's less exciting, but I don't know. If you're looking at it on the individual player level, what a time to get to be a baseball fan. It's a pretty, it's a pretty great time. So, you know, I think that we should, we should be excited about our time. We should just hope that the competitive picture can keep pace with the individual excitement that these players can bring because if it can, then watch out. You'll never want to do anything else just watch baseball. We've met so many major leaguers this year. It's a record number of debuts. I think it's 286 as we speak Thursday, have made their major league debuts this year, and that's up from the record of 268 last year, and we still have a couple of weeks to go in this season. And the records prior to less season was 2017 to 62. So two 86 and heading closer to 300 by the time it's all said and done. Gosh, that's a lot of new baseball players that sort of why we started the meeting major leaguer second. We probably have some good major leaguers we should meet and catch up on. Backlog. I wonder if this will be the high water mark for that because it's been really high for quite a while now and part of the reason why it's so high this year is because of the expanded rasters probably at the start of the season with the health and safety protocols at that point still. So I wonder whether this will be the most we ever see because assuming we don't have any more pandemics coming along hopefully fresh pandemics that will cause expanded rasters between that and between some of the other measures they've taken with limiting the number of pitchers ever so slightly on the active roster and then some of the other things with optioning players and how long you have to remain in the miners and that sort of thing and only expanding from 26 to 28 in September, et cetera. I wonder whether this will recede at all or at least plateaued. It's got a plateau. I wonder whether this will remain the record for some time. I kind of hope so, not that I want to borrow anyone from being a big leaguer, but it's just hard to know who everyone is. It's hard to keep track. Yeah, it can be a little disorienting. You're like, you turn on the TV and I'm like, I feel like I'm obligated to know who all of you are, like for my job. I should know, I should be able to look at all of you and be like, and I know these three things about you, and, you know, my hit rate isn't bad or anything, but I do feel like this year, I'm like, who are you again? No, it's like when you go to your high school reunion, you know, I'm like, we went to school together for four years. Who are you? Right. I just got an email from Major League Baseball about judge and the Red Sox Yankees game. So it says that there will be live coverage. Let's see what it says. National broadcast partners Fox Apple TV plus MLB network and ESPN all feature live game coverage from Yankee Stadium. All eyes will be on The Bronx, et cetera, et cetera, all four games will be available nationally across MLB's national broadcast partners, but it looks like it is still Apple TV plus on Friday. It does not look like that has changed. It's Thursday on Fox and then it's Friday on Apple TV plus and then it's Saturday on MLB network and then it's Sunday on ESPN. So four different places to watch or a judge over the next four games. Yeah, I mean, it's appointment viewing. And I think the cool thing is he's not likely as we've said, you know, to set the actual single season record, he's not gonna sniff that probably, but it's not impossible, so it'll still be exciting to watch even after he surpasses Maris because it could happen. You know, if he keeps a good pace, it could. It's not likely, but it could. So it's you know, it's exciting. 62 is a record, everything after 62 is also a recording. Right. Exactly. All right, I will close, I guess, with this stat I forgot to read from foolish baseball Bailey about Joey manassas. Players with 57 or more hits and ten or more homers in their first 43 career games since integration, the famous 57 ten club in their first 43. Really, the 57 ten 43 club that we talk about all the time. It's Orlando cepeda, Willie mccovey, Albert Pujols, Ryan brunn, Bo Bichette, and Joey menesis. Good company for those guys to be with Joey menesis in that club. I've got to read the past blast. Past black. This comes from Jacob I'm rinky. Editorial director of content for saber and black Sox expert and tweeter from at buck weaver, his personal account and also from at saber, the saber account. So this is episode 1906, past blast comes from 1906, and he's given me a little headlines for these. So this one is play me or pitch me or pay me. And he writes, like Shohei Ohtani, Johnny lush, of the Philadelphia Phillies, knew how it felt to be a two way player on a bad baseball team. On May 1st, 1906, the 20 year old left hander through the first of his two career no hitters, striking out 11 against the Brooklyn superbas. He also spent time playing first base and outfield in between his 35 starts, batting two 64 in 227 plate appearances. By the end of the year, lush was pretty tired and fed up with the Phillies as the Kentucky post reported on October 6th. The quote is another Philadelphia player who would like to get away from the team is Johnny lush, pitcher and general utility man. He is sore at the Philadelphia management because he hasn't been giving a cent extra for overtime work. He's done in the infield and outfield during the past two months. He was signed as a pitcher and all this time has been taking his regular turn in the box. He got no rest on the days between, but has covered some other position, generally first base center field, or right field. He feels that he ought to get something more than his pitcher's salary for all his work, but the management rules otherwise and Johnny wants to get away. Jacob says the Phillies finished in fourth place 45 and a half games behind the Chicago Cubs, who won a record one 16. Lush did get his wish to escape Philadelphia the next year, traded to St. Louis for pitcher buster Brown. He played out the rest of his 7 year career with the Cardinals, although he was never quite as good as he was in 1906. More than a century later, Johnny lush remains the last player in ale or NL history with 200 innings pitched 200 innings at other defensive positions and 200 at bats in a single season. The 202 102 hundred club. Hall of Famer bullet Rogan also performed the feat in the Negro national league twice. So Johnny lush, a somewhat significant two way player from 1906 and he argued that he deserved a race for being a two way player. He was hired as a pitcher and they were using him as something other than a pitcher as well. He's like, hey, pay me more money. Yeah. Which I guess is reasonable. You're doing more work. It's like I was a writer and now I'm an editor, so give me a raise. And the ringer did. Otherwise, I would probably be complaining like Johnny wesch. So I guess that Shohei Ohtani, maybe he should have just said I'll be a one way player. And then when he showed up, he's actually I'll do both, but you got to make it, you got to make it worth my while. I don't think that would have worked, but it will work when he is a free agent. Oh yeah. Somebody's going to back up a brinks truck. Yep. All right. Well, now I guess you can go blow in your nose and sneeze to your heart's content I can't wait. I'm gonna do some screaming sneezes. All right, that will do it for today. Seems like the Red Sox may have listened to our episode about not throwing her in judge so many strikes because they walked him in his first three plate appearances on Thursday.

"To game between what you might expect and what actually ends up happening. And that's just, that's just baseball, right? There's no narrative thrust to that necessarily, except when you go to guy so that you don't have to pay his vesting option. And then it stops being random variance and starts to feel kind of like justice, you know? Yep. Yep. And furthermore, so since the day that the a's released Andres, that was August 17th, so I went to the fan grass splits leaderboard. I looked at shortstop offensive production since August 17th by team at the top of the list, you have Toronto with Bo Bichette, who has been on fire lately. So Toronto short stops over that span have hit three 74 for 26, 6 87. That's a two 16 WRC plus and that is mostly Bichette. That's the hottest hitting shortstop team. The coldest hitting shortstop team since alessandria was released by the Oakland ace. Guess who? Is this the Oakland ace? It sure is the Oculus. They have hit one 79 one 98 two 14 over that spin. That's a 17 WRC plus 17 seems bad. That does seem bad. That is primarily The Rookie Nick Allen who's I suppose the heir apparent at that position and the only defensible case for playing interest less was we just want to see the kid the kid were playing time. Well, that's what the kid has done with the playing time thus far. So 17 WRC plus, well, Elvis Andrews has posted a one 41. So just saying things are coming home to roost. What comes home to roost chickens? Chickens. Chickens? That's what has come home to roost for the ocon is lately. Yeah, chickens do come home to roost. I would imagine that most birds probably come home to roost. I haven't made a study of it. I don't know a lot about birds, but I would imagine that you could pick you could pick the foul of your choice and probably have a home roosting habits. But yeah, whatever bird you're picking, I think that it has taken up residence along with the feral cats. Isn't there a possum now too? Aren't there possums? Yep. Or at least one possum? There's a press box possum probably not anymore. I bet they kind of took care of that. They may have addressed that. Maybe they just released them maybe the possum had a vesting option too. To follow up on another thing that we discussed recently, didn't we say or you say that someone should inspect James Karen check's hair? I sure did. And you know what? Somebody did. Yeah. So twins manager, Rocco bell deli, was evidently listening to the podcast or reaching the same conclusion independently. I mean, look, I like to be right about things. That is one of my better known attributes, but I don't think that it takes special pointing out or clairvoyance to the pod to know that guy's touching his hair every time he goes to pitch, so maybe someone should root around in there, see, you have like a family of field mice that he's concerned about or is he trying to reach for some goop? So on Friday night, umpire Ted Barrett at the prompting of twins manager Rockefeller deli went out there and he really got him there. Through the locks, the luscious locks of Cleveland reliever, James Karen check. To his credit, I mean, you know, it was pretty sensual. It was not just a cursory inspection. It was intimate. Yeah, it looked like he was inspecting for lice, possibly, or maybe it was more of like a styling thing, like he had just gotten his hair cut, and your barber, your stylist, rinse their hand through your hair and make sure it's just like everything's laying flash or whatever. Just to spruce it up before they give you the little mirror in the back to confirm that it's okay or ask you if you'd like some product or whatever it is, but it was pretty thorough, I would say and ultimately I suppose Karen check passed the inspection because there was no sticky stuff detected. Right. Now he was very much going to his hair. After almost every pitch, it seemed like in Ben Clemens wrote about this. Highly suspicious. Very safe. Not just based on the constant hair touching, but also the spin and the spin to velocity ratio, which really cratered for Karen check last year when the spin sticky stuff band went into effect. And his effectiveness cratered two and then he was demoted to the miners. We talked about it at the time. Well, he's been back and his spin to velocity ratio is almost back to where it was last year. We talked about how that's really happened league wide spin and perhaps sticky stuff seemed to be back. And with care check specifically, his numbers are more or less back where they were, he's maybe not quite peak Karen check, but he has been highly effective. And has also been really spinning it and also been going to his hair an awful lot. So Paul Delhi finally decided enough is enough. I am going to call for an inspection. And either he is innocent or he's hiding the goop so well in the hair that even this inspection could that turn it up. What's your confidence level that you would be able to detect? Sticky stuff in James Karen checks hair if there were sticky stuff there. There's a lot of hair there. Yeah. And he's sweaty, like naturally sweaty, so can you distinguish between he's naturally sweaty? Yeah. So can you dislike between natural and unnatural or stick in hair? I'm not sure. And I'm curious what guidance the umps are given around this. Like are they, you know, do they come in to a room? Is it like when it's, you know, it's Halloween and you stick your fingers in something you can't see in there like it's eyeballs and it's just peeled grapes but you don't know that necessarily it could be eyeballs. What are you talking about eyeballs? So do they get an opportunity to touch different gooeys? Yeah, I wonder. And be like, well, this is, you know, this is spider tech and this is pine tar and this is this mixed with that at this percentage of fat versus this. You know, I don't know.

"Wave. So obviously what we've talked about doesn't cover everything that has happened for the Jays this season. But you tie these threads together. New leadership in the dugout and emerging ace with a bunch of swagger and strong team chemistry. When you add it all up, let's talk about the results. Just how good has this team looked lately? Yeah, I mean, I think that one of the things is that they have just looked like a more cohesive team. And so when I alluded to before saying that often when they were pitching well, they weren't hitting well, or when they were hitting well, they weren't pitching well. Lately, all the different facets of their roster have been clicking. They're starting rotation is back on track. They're bullpen has looked really good lately. And they're hitting really well. They ended the month of July strong. And so they were able to put themselves back into the top wildcard spot. And so I'm kind of excited to see how they play down the stretch here. They've had somewhat of an easy schedule that they just got through, but they're coming up on a tougher part of their schedule, so they're really going to have to see how they fare against some of these better teams beginning with the twins. Coming up, is there still time for young stars Vladimir Guerrero junior and Bo Bichette to find another gear? And just how far can this Blue Jays team ultimately go? We get support from talk space. So Caitlyn, after an absurd season where he hit three 11 with 48 home runs and only lost out on MVP because Shohei Ohtani was just basically out of this world. Vladimir guru junior hasn't quite been up to his own standards in 2022. And the same for another young star, Bo Bichette. Is there sense why these guys have come up a bit short? And is there optimism in Toronto that they can and will finish strong? Yeah, I think so. And honestly, like Vlad lately has looked a lot better. He's on a hitting streak right now. I think it's about a 15 game hitting streak. Guerrero lines the ball right center field and it's down for a base hit. Cut off by Bradley, but that's a four hit afternoon for vladi. You get his bat starting to heat up with everybody else. He can carry the team. That's a good and so he's looked a lot better lately. And Bose kind of been symbolic, I guess, of the offense as a whole and that he's had some really good months, but then he's had some months where he wasn't quite as consistent, but there is always a lot of optimism around both those players because of who they are because of their track record and because you know of their potential. And so I think at any moment, the Blue Jays know that both those players can go off and they can go on a tear. And sure they've not lived up to those standards this year, but they're still two months left. The season. And I think you just bank on their track record. And I think honestly, overall, that's going to be the key a little bit to the blue Jay success here is that, as I said, they made those trade deadline editions to kind of improve themselves at the margins of the roster, but it's really going to come down to the roster that they built overall for the season. And this core is a really good talent and core. And so I think even when things weren't going so well for the Jays and there was concern level rising. I think the smart bet honestly was always a bet on them, figuring it out because there's just too much talent on this roster that they wouldn't figure it out. Well, finally, Caitlin adds of this interview, the Jays are on pace for right around 90 wins and the top wild card spot. The division title is pretty much out of the picture with the Yankees just absolutely dominating. But once they're in the playoffs, how far can this team go? It's a good question. And in a three game wildcard series, we see this all year in the baseball season. Sometimes the more talented team doesn't win. Anything can really happen. That's why that home field advantage is going to be so key. I think the way that it's shaping up right now, it might be a Toronto Seattle, which would be a really interesting matchup. There's a lot of storylines there. They're kind of rivals in some ways because of the Canadian influence on the West Coast that everyone goes down to Seattle. So that would be a really interesting series. So it definitely have the pieces to make some noise in the postseason. I think you look at a team like the braves. Obviously that's like a best case scenario when you get into postseason. You're playing your hottest baseball then, and they obviously won the World Series. That's the best case scenario, but I honestly think you could look at that and say, maybe the Blue Jays could be that this year where maybe they had a bit of an uneven season. They didn't get it all together until later in the year, but they got hot at the right time. Well, thank you so much for bringing all the sound Caitlin. Hope you have a minute to catch your breath at the end of this crazy baseball week. "Last few weeks, few teams in baseball have been hotter than the very talented previously disappointing and suddenly surging Toronto Blue Jays. And now Janssen rushes another one. His second home run of the night, another rocket. And it is 20 7 to three. Today, we're joined by the athletics Caitlin McGrath to look at why this team was a letdown to the point that they had a fire their manager while they had a winning record. In three key factors that have helped power their turnaround, including an emerging young ace with a lot of swagger. In a new manager with a surprising knack for keeping things lively in the Clubhouse. We walked into the car house and there's a DJ in the middle and he's spinning beats and playing Justin Bieber remix it and all this kind of stuff. So it was really fun. It's definitely a new thing walking into the Blue Jays Clubhouse and seeing a DJ. That's a first and it was first for me and I think it was a first for most of the players. Plus, with the young superstars Vladimir Guerrero junior and Bo Bichette both not living up to their own high standards, is there still hope for a big finish? From wondery, I'm Tiffany oshinsky. It's Friday, August 5th, and this is the lead. Caitlin McGrath, welcome back to the lead and thanks for taking the time to join us during this totally not hectic week at all in Major League Baseball. Yes, thank you for having me back. Of course, I'm happy to be here to talk about the Blue Jays again. It's been a hectic week. I'm in Tampa right now. I'll be heading to Minneapolis next for four games against the twins who made some noise at the trade deadline as well. So it should be an interesting stretch for the Blue Jays and the rest of the American League. Oh yeah, definitely. Well, let's take a minute to talk about the trade deadline before we get into the story of this blue Jay season. And the trade deadline, which we know took place on Tuesday, the Jays did not make the same big splash as a team like the Padres, but then again, no one really did. So can you quickly tell us what Toronto got done? Yeah, of course. So the Blue Jays did not make a splashy type of deal as the Padres did. And honestly, not like the Blue Jays did a year ago when they acquired Jose brioche, who was one of the best starters on the market. So the Blue Jays had a bit of more of an understated deadline. I think they improved at the margins without making maybe that huge blockbuster type deal. So overall they added four players, Mitch white, who was kind of a swingman type pitcher who can start who can come out of the bullpen from the Dodgers. They added two relievers from the Marlins, Anthony bass, and Zach pop, who was a Canadian bonus coming back to his hometown team and as well as Whit merrifield, which kind of came out of left field, honestly. There's a lot to unpack with that acquisition, which I'm sure we'll get into, but I think that these deals all complement the roster, but for me, what it really underlines is obviously this front office thinks they've got a good core and exciting young core capable of being one of the most dangerous teams. And so these pieces raise the floor a little bit, but it's really up to the team that they have already assembled to raise that ceiling. So let's talk about what merryfield. He's probably the most notable name that they added in a lot of ways. And maryfield came from Kansas City and he literally could not play in Toronto in July because he wasn't vaccinated. He is now confirmed that he is vaccinated, but pretty interesting that they traded for this guy in the first place. You're right, it was kind of an unexpected move because all along, just covering the Blue Jays and following this team and knowing the circumstances around entering the country and all this kind of stuff has been a storyline that we've had to follow all year. So almost all of us covering the Blue Jays just completely ruled out any unvaccinated players because you assume they're not going to go after them because why would the team acquire a player that might not be able to play half the games in Toronto? The Blue Jays, again, we have to remember if we were looking down into the future, they're wanting to play for that top wildcard spot, and that top wildcard spot, the reward for getting the top wild card spot is that you would host a three game series all at home. So they want all their players to be there available. Well, let's talk about the team now as we mentioned at the top, this team has been playing much better lately. And we want to look at three key reasons why. So start at the beginning, what were the expectations for the Blue Jays coming into the season? Yeah, the blue cheese had really high expectations. Based on how they performed last year, especially down the stretch, they ended up winning 91 games last season, which fell just one win short of qualifying for the postseason. So disappointing end, but that seemed to fuel them a lot, to want to come back stronger. And so that I think was one of the sort of main motivations for them, looking at we looked like a dangerous team last year. No one wanted to face us down the stretch because we looked like we could make some noise in the playoffs. So this year we don't want to have that history repeat itself. So the expectations, of course, they were to make the postseason, but they were even higher than that. I think this blue Jay scene was talking about. We want to be World Series winners. We want to be World Series contenders. We want to win a hundred games. Then I should add, it was coming from the Clubhouse in the room. But if you looked at pre season picks from baseball experts in the media industry as a whole, a lot of people were picking the Blue Jays to be the favorites as well. And when I bumped into a member of the Yankees organization, I said, yes, what have you seen in the blue Jays? And he looked at me Riley said, oh, you mean the world champion? Because everybody's picking them because they look so great at the end of last season. So it wasn't just them in the room saying we can do it. It was everyone looking around the league and saying this Fuji team looks like it's going to be one of the best. When you look at those expectations, what were the main things that went wrong for this team during the first half of the season? Yeah, I think the main overarching thing for the Blue Jays this year has been a general lack of consistency and what I mean with that is a bit twofold and that they've had inconsistent periods with their offense, for example, in April and May, they got off to a really, really slow start offensively. And it was kind of mind boggling because you looked at this lineup and how many stacked hitters they had in this lineup and they just were not scoring at the rate that we thought they would score. And then finally they started to score, but then they had some struggles with their rotation and they had struggles with our bullpen and this kind of continued on until honestly it led up until that really terrible road trip they had on the West Coast where they went one in 6. They lost a serious to the Oakland a's, one of the worst teams in baseball. They were swept over four games by Seattle, which was a team that was chasing them for wild card spot. Simultaneous to this, they were also dealing with some really tragic circumstances, their first base coach, his daughter, died unexpectedly. So they were dealing with a lot of this stuff. Things were not going well. And eventually they came back to Toronto and the front office decided to fire Charlie Montoya. Their manager, who had been their manager since 2019. We do have some breaking news now on the Toronto blue Jays, the team has fired manager at Charlie montoyo. So Jamie, what more can you tell us about this? Well, I can tell you that 87 games into this baseball season, the Blue Jays have made a decision that a lot of fans had been hoping they would make in recent weeks. So the manager changes the first key piece of this turnaround that we want to look at. So Toronto had a winning record with Charlie Montoya this year, but they fired him anyway. And the guy who took over as manager is John Schneider, a former Blue Jays minor league catcher. How would you say his style is different than Montoya's and what kind of impact has he had on this Clubhouse? Yeah, he's definitely a different personality inventory on Montoya was more, I guess he was more of an introvert. So where's John Schneider? Is definitely more loose, definitely more of a big personality, very chatty, very

"Cody Bellinger, AJ Pollock, the only one of those players who has not been an all star is Will Smith, and he is probably the best catcher in the league. So I imagine he's going to get his shot this year. I would think so. So there's no hole here. Gavin Lux, who's blocked again for now after looking like he might have a shot at playing time, but man, I mean, I don't want to get too cut up in the superlatives, but I was writing about this. I was like, do you have a shot at being the first thousand run offense of this century? And probably not. Almost certainly not just because it's a neutral park and it's not that extreme a run squaring environment. And it's in lineup that's getting on in years and most of these guys are well over 30 and some of them will probably break down at some point and you're counting on max muncy to make a full recovery from his elbow injury and you're hoping that Cody Bellinger will have a big rebound and that his hot hitting in the World Series will continue into the season. So there's some question marks there I guess, but Dodgers level question marks for any other team. I mean, this is just so, so stacked. And yeah, I mean, between this and Fernando Tatís Jr.'s absence. This has been a week that has boosted the Dodgers playoff ads even higher. I guess you could say that they're starting rotation, their staff is maybe looking a little lighter in some respects than it has been in some previous years. And of course, both in that area and payroll, why is there is still some uncertainty somehow about the status of Trevor Bauer and whether he will be suspended and for how long as things stand, they are just slightly submit in projected payroll over 270 million. So yeah, this is what the Dodgers can do. They can develop a Will Smith and they can find and fix a max Muncie or Justin Turner, but they can also just, you know, trade prospects and then sign Mookie bets to it, big deal, and they can go out and get Freddie Freeman, so they pick their spots and they spend a ton of money and that lineup is going to be a lot of fun to watch. Yeah, it's just going to be really, really excellent. So that's fun. And I like that and I don't know if they would articulate it in quite these terms because obviously, like the trajectory, potential trajectory of the Padres looks different now than it did even a week ago with the news that tatis is going to need surgery or has had surgery at this point. He's either had it or he's going to for sure now. So that has changed since the last time we recorded, but the trajectory of the Padres is a little different than it was, the giant still seemed committed to winning and this seems like the second off season in a row where the Dodgers have been faced with the option of feeling confident or shoring up an already excellent club in the face of real competition potentially in division. And they've risen to that again, right? And that's exciting that that continues to be a priority for them. And to be able to do it in a way that feels a lot less icky than some of their options last off season saw the better, Ben. That's just all the better. And the way they've gone about this maybe provides an interesting contrast to how the Yankees have operated which we could talk about in a second I will segue into the AL east via another ridiculous lineup. And that is the Toronto blue Chase who added Matt Chapman to an already strong position player course. So I don't know if it quite compares to the Dodgers, but boy, it's not far. You've got George Springer, Bo Bichette, black girl junior, the Oscar Fernández, Lourdes curio junior, Matt Chapman, Randall critch, Kevin biggio, Danny Jansen. That is quite a collection of talent as well with maybe an even stronger rotation at this point or just as strong, so this team is also stacked and I don't know how you can look at this roster and not see the Blue Jays as the favorite in the AL east and it's going to be competitive as usual as it was last year. They did not win the division or even make the playoffs last year, but they were, if not the best team, probably at least the second best and they just didn't make it in. And they had that weird mismatch between their record and their rent differential, I would not count on that continuing into the season. Matt Chapman may not quite be the player he was prior to his hip surgery, but he's still seemingly very good defensively and even last year when he was roughly a leak average hitter, not what he had been before, you know, it seems like his power was sapped a bit and I don't know whether some of that comes back or not, but he does strike out a lot these days and he is not a high average hitter. He does walk so he can still help you offensively, but the glove is still good and he is still only 28 and you know they had to pay a price for him and you did a little state of the a's farm system last time we talked. So we don't have to go in depth on that this time, but they did shore that up even further there. They traded, I guess, the headliner was Gunnar houghland, right? Toronto's top pick last year and then they also added in Fielder Kevin Smith who maybe is an immediate replacement for Chapman and then a couple of pitchers, Zach Logan, Kirby snead. So this fits in with the a's pattern we talked about last time where it seems like they are targeting players who are well into their 20s already, like major league ready guys who can step in now or sometimes soon and maybe lead to a shorter rebuild than you would expect. So it's tough, obviously for ace fans now that both of the mets have gone as well as Chris Bassett and maybe minaya and montas and who knows who else will follow them sometimes soon, but at least they're getting guys back where you can imagine them getting good again sometimes soon. But in the meantime, you can also just sort of salivate over the put chase rest there because it is pretty special too. Yeah, we talked about the Dodgers odds. I mean, the Blue Jays for us now lead the American League in their combined playoff odds. They lead the east in terms of their division chances. They do not have the highest odds of winning their division within the American League because the east is pretty stacked, but their positions to lynch by and they have the highest.

I don't necessarily think it's his fault for giving up a bomb, but that's just a lunatic and a very good player in baseball. Yeah, but bad call by Aaron Boone in my eyes right there. It's tough to bring him into that spot. You saw what he did the night before. He was lucky to get out of that jam with how wild he was. But hey, you look at this. And this was not part of any plan, but it's amazing because now you have guys who can eat innings once again, Michael king and sebrina come in last night. Kluber doesn't last 5. And then you have you have a competent group of guys who can pick up the slack and give you multiple innings and not have you throwing 5 relievers or 6 relievers for the last 5 innings because your four or 5 innings because that's just really untenable. And that's how you get the tired bullpen. And that's how you get Chad green, coughing up a 5 run lead against the Astros in right before the all star break. I'm not going to prematurely say the Red Sox are dead, but the Red Sox have lost 5 of 6. And they look bad ever since the Yankees just went into Fenway and completely destroyed them. The Jays were obviously limping into this series, they were 6 and 7 over their last 13. And they kind of had owned the narrative on the Yankees this year. They were the ones who constantly punched back. They were the ones who came through with big hits. They were the ones that were so good. Yeah. Bo Bichette is the most now the most annoying player I've ever watched. And I watched that. I know how anybody gets them out ever. Yeah. I want to enjoy and I can't enjoy it. And they have gotten the better of us for most of this year. I know that it wasn't what were they 6 and 9 versus coming into the series or something like that? Something like that. Actually, What prompted me to flip over to the Yankee game was I'm watching the box game and and part way through. I see a tweet from Nick Totoro, who's tweeting in all caps upset about Andrew a knee in the ball game, and I think he tweeted fire and fire and fire him like six or seven times, And I believe he was talking about about Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees, So I did not catch a whole lot of Drew Brees and and I think I've made this known before on the leadoff spot. I don't watch games with audio frequently. If Sachin are both home at the same time, she gets off work. She's watching her show or whatever I watch on occasional through the head. Phones into the PlayStation controller or something and listen to some of the audio or listen to a A call on a replay or something, but For the most part, I'm not not listening. I still need Drew Brees face sitting in my living room. "Atlanta for a three game weekend series next friday or next friday coming up and We'll see what happens from that but robbery Definitely a bounceback starting definitely kind of a sigh of relief almost just to see him kind of revert back to what we hope or what we've been expecting him to which is walking less than striking out more Well why don't we jump into some of the standout names from this week. Besides them before we get to. I mean everyone can probably guess what we're gonna talk. But some of the defensive problems with the blue jays One name that stood out to me. Is randall grishik. He had a good week. He had Home runs and back to back games. I believe he had the three run home. Run in the first inning of saturday's game. I think it was so that was one guy. I was really happy with how he did this week. I'm some other people that may be stood out to either of you guys as good performances. This week So for me. I actually had a few people that. I've taken a lot of a few people that caught my eye on to. This is the first time we've recorded since the lineup change. We know that market was struggling at the leadoff spot. And now we have kevin bijou and him kind of swapping places. Marcus semyon hitting in the middle of the order now five six and you know we were talking about it. He's already seems more comfortable voter and right away for last seven days. A marcus semyon has been a lot better and i knows numbers are still down overall but the last seven days nine twenty nine oh s and three rbi. So that's definitely good other names. I have let him grow junior. Who's continuing to hit. Well ran grischuk as well. Still playing for that playing time and still earning at playing time for the return of george springer tasker hernandez which seems to be days away. So good on randall. Grischuk for doing that..
