"And welcome to breaking the glass slipper. I'm Charlotte bombed. I'm Lucy handsome and I'm Megan Lee. We are all of us shaped by our childhood the books and characters. We grew up with are the ones that stay with us throughout our lives and also the ones which helped us to shape ideas about ourselves and the society. We live in Palm spend a lot of time on breaking the glass slipper championing modern authors and ground-breaking characters. So we thought it was about time to devote an episode to discussing the heroines good and bad that we grew up with them. So ladies, what is the earliest heroin that you can remember having a strong attachment to it can be from a film from a book from TV anything? Who is the first time that you really remember going? That's the girl for me. Yeah, so Millions totally going to say princess Slayer, which I'm not going to say because I'm clearly crap and don't watch Star Wars, but I was thinking about this today and maybe that was because I was in waterstones and so I was surrounded by books, but I had some Enid blyton's and I read the naughtiest girl in school and I have to say that she was one of my first like heroic female characters because I just loved her. I love the fact that she was a Red Bull from the start and yeah, she had no friends and it was her fault. She had no friends. But you know, I I was with her all the way. I was like, yeah, you kicked that proof egg, but you know, I went on the journey with her and she grows as a character mean in a flight in like kudos to her. She does some real character development and Elizabeth the heroine of the of the naughtiest girl she she kind of reforms herself and grows up. Be a prefect and you know, yeah, it's a bit of a goody-two-shoes things, but she never really loses that kind of rebellious spark. She always does things her own way and and that's what really appealed to me off. Okay. I'm going to say that I'm not that predictable because I wasn't going to say princess layer. The reason was because we were trying to think of the song list heroin that I really remember having a strong attachment to and this is probably going to come out way of left field but Ducky from The Land Before Time. Do you know what I never watched that? I knew it that maybe I saw like one episode of it. So I'm all ears which one was ducky ducky song from. Well, I'm talking about the film. I've not actually seen any of the other films all the series. So, oh I knew it was a series that I just never saw it, but this is the one with the Dinosaurs in yes. Yes, so Ducky song The cute little one that's always like yep. Yep. Yep. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right. And I I love ducky and I loved Spike and I loved their friendship and oh, yeah ducky. Yeah. I just really yucky when I was little and I still do and yeah, although home today. I actually looked it up because it had been such a long time and I could remember her voice and I could remember that you know what the character looked like and for some reason the name had gone out of my head which I felt terrible about but also I discovered something really quite horrible the the little girl who voiced ducky she died at the age of ten because her father had killed shot her mother and her and then killed himself and was really quite depressing. And so that's what I am that still line. I went down this afternoon when I was Doing my research for today's episode, which is great. Yeah, that's crazy. She was ten o horrible pool kids. Yeah, and then she cuz she was also took in All Dogs Go to Heaven, but that was really helped. Mostly. Yeah. I remember that film cried so much of that film. Yeah, me too. Anyway, sorry, I had a high and then a real low, but anyway ducky was probably yeah, the the very earliest one and if God, I think if anyone else has really early it would be Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden. I loved Mary C. I wasn't really Blown Away by them regarding they must have met it was just kind of a am effing for me. Yeah same here. Yeah didn't get it still don't I love The Secret Garden. So one of my dreams to come across the hidden garden Wilderness know it's nothing Tom's. My garden is so much better than that. Sounds good. I love that. I can I had never even thought of that before meeting you too. So, yeah. Sorry. Maybe it didn't make it to Australia. I don't know. So what about you Charlotte? Well, I'm going to show my age here. I think the first heroin that I ever remember really cutting on too and I must have been very very young was Juliet in dog Canyon. If either of you old enough to remember that, of course Canyon and the musket hands and I don't know why cuz she was so cute and like had that lovely pink dress that never got Mucky or maybe it's always just just perfect and are she I really when I was growing up, I really wanted to be Juliet from dog Canyon but when it comes to books I grew up with my parents reading the books and as leasing I would talk you about previously before we joined the discussion. It was in an era when there wasn't like young fancy children's books that you could read to kids. So you kind of got rid of adult books wage and I was read The Hobbit Wind in the Willows was red which courses very very lacking in women or female characters

"If you have a cat or dog that you need worm each month. It's basically stick that launches the pill into an animal's throat so that they swallow it and from there the pill is on its mission. The capsule had to make its way past the acid in the stomach to a place where the bacteria could survive so once that capsule optional went past the stomach it broke open and let the bacteria in the Hind Gut which is whether they needed to be sort of like a spy by catapulting itself down the throat. It's hence bringing through the stomach yeah once they get past the VAT of acid than they can get to the price. At least that was the plan so the first thing we needed to do is to work at teed. We actually get live save my probes into the Koala. Did it do what we wanted it to figure that out. They waited for the Koalas to to poop straightforward. If the pill had done its job they should have found. Even more mess made microbes in the poop than they put it in and that's what they saw aw great. This is what we want. We've got the bacteria in that and they're establishing and growing but the amount of bacteria was different for each Koala meaning meaning that the microbes did better in some Koala guts than others and then the next thing was to go okay so we've got the bacteria in does that change what the Koala will eight. It was time for another mess mate only buffet at the Koala Hotel. What do we got here. Math estimate again is a koalas approached. The Mess Mate Buffet. The scientist watched in anticipation will they he did and what we found is the ones that it worked really well full. They will willing to eat quite a lot of mess mate the ones that didn't work as well well for not so much they ate some but not as much so does that mean that the fecal transplants were successful or not. Michaela in her colleagues were able able to give the koalas nuked gut bacteria in that's the main thing that they'd wanted but the poop transplant wasn't an instinct cure for every Koala's tummy troubles we find also in humans when we give them fake transplants it works for some people doesn't work so well for the papal. There's always a bit of variability certainly isn't for everyone. nope but Michaela's sees fecal transplants as a potential way to help Koalas Hawalas that have been moved like those from Cape Outweigh and get adjusted into their new home environments if we could give them they capsules before releasing them into a new area with different trees that they have to feed on then that might help them to adapt to the different food sorta like a housewarming present except instead of casserole. It's poop exactly so if there's another another crisis the POOP pill may be ready to pop in to help but there's a bigger lesson for conservation in general so so what I take home message is is that it looks like what a Koala eats is affected by what microbes probes they have in guts and that's really important because in conservation we do too quickly look at the animal and how it interacts with the environment separate from what's going on inside them in other words conservation scientists tend to study ecosystems more than they look at digestive systems and this is saying. Maybe we need to take a closer look inside awed the animal and see what's going on there. 'CAUSE that's important too if we're trying to save these animals in the meantime the Koala population nations keep outweigh is back to its normal size in eucalyptus forest or slowly recovering to the Koala crisis was tragic but Makila who says it taught her a lot about how to do science when so much is at stake. I think the big thing with all of this is when anything like like this happens. Everybody has opinions and science is one of the best ways of finding out which of those ideas is rush going out and actually testing the idea and finding the answer and that's how we make sure that when we make decisions in conservation with making the right ones based on facts and based on evidence okay so now it's your turn to take a closer look at animals insides. which is your favorite animal eat does? Does it have any kind of weird eating habits and how might it's gut help. It's eat what did he let us know. If you find anything out that's both gross and fascinating were always interested in things that can be described that way things today to Dr Michaela Blyton postdoctoral researcher at the University of Queensland Australia. She did this research Wallet Western Sydney University..

And then when I got to England, the TV shows I remembered just neighbors was like the after school. So and then. Television shows. I actually like even when I was in the USA I read a lot of Enid Blyton at my mum's suggestion insistence is that was her upbringing was English, and and then I remember still like reading a lot of that when I came over and then in television terms loving like the BBC dramas, like really got into that pretty pretty quickly just blanking on everything right now. But. And what about do you have earliest MetLife you were you into like film at going to the movies or was did that of come with the love of acting? Like did that kind of like inspire you to kind of go out and seek that stuff out? Probably. And I was for some reason in this moment as a kid. All I can remember the little moment. You know, I went through this phase. Probably like a lot of people when I was twenty one where I went and watched all every movie. You know what I mean? I just like I felt like imbibed the classics in in in in a heavy sense number. I like the AFL top one hundred list like summer. I was like, I'm just to like go through this. Yeah. Yeah. And it's funny because now I have this time off and I have a few weeks until I have to go do something else. And I was like, all I wanna do is like go in the pool and watch movies and have an actual summit because it's summertime and I was like, this is just like, you know, this is a strange strange thing time on your hands and the focused on the next thing breathe. Yes. A second to breathe and for hot second. People that you're gonna go on TV show really soon. The new? Yeah.
