"We run down some of the top headlines including when the construction industry will be allowed back to work plus. There's some interesting Ford and Lincoln Related News. Van will help us understand it all so let's get started. The State of Michigan says there were one thousand one hundred thirty seven new cases of Corona virus and one hundred three deaths in Michigan. This brings the total confirmed cases to nearly forty thousand four hundred and three thousand six hundred seventy deaths. They also have an update on the economy reopening here in Michigan. The construction industry is expected to resume operations on May seventh. That accounts for nearly four percent of the state's gross domestic product according to the Associated General Contractors of America and Industry Group Governor Gretchen. Whitmer has unveiled a proposal to give essential workers as defined by her stay at home order a path to free college education. The so called futures for frontliners program is basically a Gi bill for essential workers. The Governor says it's the first of its kind in the country it would provide a tuition free path to college or a technical certificate for essential workers. Who Don't have a college degree. Whitmer has a goal to increase the number of working age adults with a technical certificate or college degree from forty five percent to sixty percent in the next decade the program announcement light on details and it still requires work with a legislature to get it funded. Some of the categories of essential workers included our hospital and nursing home. Staff Grocery store workers people who manufacture personal protective equipment public safety trash pickup and childcare workers speaking of childcare the governor also announced in new childcare affordability program during the pandemic one hundred thirty million dollar childcare. Relief Fund will make direct grants starting at fifteen hundred dollars to childcare providers. It'll help keep providers who are serving essential workers open and it has the aim of making childcare more affordable as the economy starts to reopen. This is being funded by one hundred million dollars from the Federal Cares Act and thirty million dollars from the state's childcare fund a quick update on. What's happening here? In the city of Detroit there have been more than one thousand deaths in the city from Cova nineteen as of Wednesday an increase of twenty one from Tuesday mayor. Mike Duggan says the vast majority are seniors and a number of those reported are catch ups from previous day's officials also spent a good amount of time on Wednesday talking about the census including an appearance by rapper. Ice where Vizo. Who's being an ambassador for the city? The census has huge importance as many things are determined by it including representation in Congress and federal funding for local and state governments people of Color and illegal immigrants historically have been very hesitant to fill out their census forms for a variety of reasons including severe mistrust of the government right. Now it's estimated that only forty two percent of city residents have filled out the census. Jerry I have a question yes. Are you familiar with ice? Whereas until today I was not me neither. I'm not to look. Meanwhile the corona virus continues to spread beyond the core here in southeast Michigan in West and Central Michigan. Twenty eight residents of Ingham County and nine in Arizona. County have been infected by a Kobe. Nineteen outbreak that's been traced to a massive Industrial Poultry Farm the Lansing State Journal reports that her Brooks Poultry Ranch first reported that an employee had tested positive for the corona virus. Two weeks ago. Her Brooks is the largest egg producer in the state and it employs hundreds of workers including many immigrants. It's massive hangar. Barnes are visible from Interstate Ninety six between lansing and grand rapids. The farm says it's now doing widespread testing of workers has put into place strict protocols and has shut down a portion of the ranch to prevent spreading the virus. It's interesting how this Food system is being impacted by the Corona Virus Fan. It's something that we've been watching No doubt about it And especially there's news out today that President trump is involved invoking the defense production act which she used for GM famously to force them to start producing ventilators. But now I'm trying to get meat. Production plants back to work You know because a lot of these in rural areas have become real hot spots for corona virus infection. Do we now get to call him the commander in chief? I wonder He's said to be a famous. You know steak eater. He likes steak. Well done with catch up so Yeah I think so. Eight need beep on the old fashioned family meal ready in about ten minutes. Mom It was for dinner. There is big news out of four. This week the Blue Oval reported that it lost two billion dollars in the first quarter. Man That is a big number. What is going on. Yeah big number for sure. Well for blamed its losses on corona virus. It'd actually telegraphed earlier. I think last week that that this huge number was coming so it's not necessarily a big surprise but Again Ford blames it all on the Corona virus shut down. Its plants have all been closed since March. But that really was only the last week of of the first quarter. Essentially Ford is already cut. Its dividends in its deferred salaries for some of the top executives. And it's borrowed fifteen billion dollars from a line of credit one analyst. This week famously suggested that it might be time for forward to stay to begin seeking a merger partner. I checked before we recorded this Ford stock as we're recording. This is currently trading in the five dollar range. Wall Street has been hammering the company for a long time about this and this is only going to increase pressure on CEO. Jim Hackett to You know speed up. His vaunted turnaround a big time and certainly the corona virus. Shutdown is You know you can't fault any company for it but It's not helping matters. They seem not to be clear on when they're going to be getting back to work. It seems like now kind of mid May is the time or before they talked about may fourth and then on top of that that that idea of a merger partner sign that kind of intense to me so then oh for sure In the auto industry I mean you hearing about this. A lot right Former Fiat Chrysler CEO. Sergio mark. Yoni famously you know rang this bell Constantly you know he famously tried to force a merger with General Motors. But that didn't work. I mean auto in legacy auto companies like Ford. Are you know they have a lot of pride right? I mean they still bill for Juniors still the executive chairman you know. He's he's a family cy on and they're still members of his family working for the company. You know there. I don't think any of them are going to take easily to the idea of partnering up with somebody but you know we'll see it's just one idea out there we'll see whether they need to do at Ford. Ford has said that they've got enough cash to get through the end of the year. But we'll see what happens. I mean we. There's there's a long road to go here. One of the topics that interest me a lot is electric vehicles and this next piece of news is interesting because Lincoln is now saying that it has cancelled plans for an electric vehicle to be developed with Riviere. That's the startup we featured on this very podcast and for Detroit public television. We went out to their facilities. You talked to their CEO. This seems like a big deal. What's happening? Yeah this one would kinda came. As a surprise I think to a Lotta people and left scratching their heads Backstory here real quick Ford last year announced it was going to invest five hundred million dollars in Ribian and earlier this year. Lincoln confirmed that it would be building an electric vehicle using ravines technology and their electric vehicle platform Lincoln now says it's canceled those plans and will instead move forward developing its own electric vehicle And actually just today. The news came out that they have applied for patent protection on a name eagle-eyed which is believed to be that's fan. It's believed that's a name believed to be an electric vehicle name most most Auto names nowadays that have an e in them. You know. Sorta signify electric vehicles further apart. Both Lincoln and Ford and Rivi on the other side. Say The partnership remains intact remains strong and they will work together in the future Lincoln followed up by saying that it will continue to work with a ribbon on a quote unquote alternative vehicle. Whatever that means. We'll they're going to work on stuff in the future. What's the reason behind this? Well I mean you have to go back to the finances that we talked about In the beginning of this segment right I mean two billion dollar loss in the first quarter and then coincidentally Ford is warning that its second-quarter is going to be worse. They're actually forecasting that they're going to post a five billion dollar. Loss in the second quarter. I mean that's a huge staggering number. Right so I mean Ford offered as you know reasoning for this cancellation The quote unquote current environment. You know referring to plant shutdowns And the corona virus in cash. Obviously he's playing a huge role in that Decision frankly it's just probably not the best time for them to be investing in high priced premium luxury electric vehicle from from Lincoln. Right which is what we'd be talking about here Sales are you know slowed here in the United States? Certainly I mean. I don't think anybody thinks that they're going to rebound You know in a hurry once once production picks back up and you know stay at home or orders are lifted Even before the corona virus hit sales were slowing dramatically in China which is a hugely important market. For Lincoln it's been a big growth market for them And I would also note that Tech Crunch reported also that Ford has pushed back the launch of its autonomous vehicle Service with its partner Argo. Ai Two twenty twenty two. That's a year long delay. So I think you're seeing this. A lot of auto companies are trying to delay research. Projects Product Launches New Investments. Just trying to conserve.

"So can't you see this as more of an entry vehicle into the Mustang lifestyle that may get others to buy Mustang of the second car because they like the Machi so much John John Absolutely. You're absolutely right. But there's one big problem it's not entry into the Mustang lifestyle it's not a Mustang Mustang. So you don't you don't. It's not this this could be. This could be the Ford Machi has is and people say well. Hey if this is what I'm saying if this is a little bit more environmentally conscious I could step into this I get step in and enjoy this and hey this is kind of fun performance Mustang inspired now. I'd like to see what you you know. What a Mustang is like right? You don't you don't picture anyone driving Amaki like welcome at a Mustang meet. I love you be honest be honest not really not really and and I mean in now this has only been out a week right. I mean we're making a lot of judgments agents here just by the seat of our pants but we haven't driven the car yet. It looks like it would be pretty fun to drive. It's just the the point that I have to keep coming back to buy fundamental design. It's not a Mustang. See I and I get your argument that there's like one true form of a Mustang and and you can't put that in namen anything else I think as an argument that a lot of enthusiasts are making but I also think that it's not just that the form of the machi is not two plus two coupe. Crossover it's that. I think it would be easier to swallow if it were a sedan or something else I area. I think the word crossover over has a stereotype to it carries connotations of like what parents drive to avoid minivans. But they're also kind of poser vehicles because they're not real suv's vs and I think Ford made a little mistake here. Even mentioning the word crossover. Because let's look at the crossover segment. The the interesting thing about the crossover segment is that it doesn't have very defined edges of what gets included. It's not like a truck where it's obviously a truck and it's obvious. Here's what's a sedan with crossover. There are so many different kinds and types that can go anywhere from things that look just like normal five-door hatchbacks ax to things that do look like rough and tumble. Suv's what I think. The machi is is something more akin to an Audi q eight or for Mercedes Jelly Jelly coop or BMW X.. Four worth kind of like a four door coupe. Crossover where it's got a really kind of fastback roof line. It's tall but I wouldn't even though it's tall. I wouldn't say it's raised is not like an SUV with a huge ground clearance. It's more just tall to afford a higher and more comfortable seating position than it is tall to get over a tree trunk or or a rock in the middle of the road right. I mean I mean that's obvious I mean it's it's a crossover crossovers by definition don't necessarily fit in one category or another hence crossover and you're right Ford would have. This would have been easier to swallow. I think if it had been sedan I don't think it would have been much easier to swallow because it's still upsetting that that basic formula and and you know a point that I'll that I'll bring up here because I've been trying to Suss this out as well you know. What is true intention here here? I mean we know. Obviously they're trying to brand this as a Mustang because they want to sell people on that Mustang lifestyle. And I know you've said. Hey that's that's a pretty good good complement to Mustang. That Ford is coming out with this awesome electric crossover with with statistics and performance. It's it's really top of the range. I don't see that way though. I see this has Ford. Frankly being scared they're not sure how this this is GonNa go. They're not sure how this is going to sell. They aren't prepared to try to sell this new electric performance crossover on his own merits. So they're going to try to tie Mustang hang into it selling not the vehicle but the lifestyle and now people there's in theory people are GonNa come into this with preconceived notions that okay. This thing is hey this thing is going to be like Mustang. The Mustang people aren't going to come into that because they know it's not a Mustang but the really the buyers at Ford is is targeting with this not Mustang people but people that want that Mustang lifestyle and might be interested. They're going to go into this with preconceived notions. Okay here's what this is going to be like. Maybe it impresses them maybe dozens. But either way Mustang does not help this vehicle sickle cell calling this a Mustang does not help this vehicle cell. I disagree completely. Let me let me make two arguments. Why for one? I think you characterize what I've said about. Why did it sort of right? But he didn't kind of flesh out the details. I think what Ford has done with. The machi is unlike other automakers who I think their egos would not let them admit that Tesla was doing a better job than them making an electric vehicle so so they did their own way. Like Audi Mercedes and Jaguar I think Ford Ego aside and said recognized is the Tesla is seventy percent of the market in the US and that they are doing something right. So Ford got busy analyzing what what Tesla did and I think one thing. They noticed that people aren't necessarily or just buying Tesla's because they're technically superior vs they. They are getting excited about TUSLA's and passionate about Tesla it's like people used to get about the iphone like there. There was an emotional connection being made. That was far beyond just the technical capability of of the vehicle and it was being driven on this wave of excitement over the vehicles and I think in one sense a you characterize it as Ford was scared. They couldn't sell it without attaching the Mustang to it to give it something more. I don't think that Ford was scared. I think Forbes saw that it wasn't enough to just make a good on paper that it had to have an it had to be able make an emotional connection with people and get people excited and the only intellectual property they have in their portfolio. That can do that or maybe not. The only one that I could do at best is Mustang. If they make it a Mustang people are going to have an emotional reaction to it. My second point is they were fully aware that reaction action could be both negative and positive and they don't care because another thing they learned from Tesla is that it doesn't matter if people are are calling you stupid or calling you great. They're talking about you and that's way better than not talking about you. which is exactly what happened to every other? Ev That's launched in the Tesla era They've been completely forgotten about okay. First of all ask Volkswagen. How many diesel vehicles they sold because people were talking about diesel gate? There is such a thing in has negative talk. You don't want that. I understand the whole idea of. Hey any talk is good talk no not necessarily right let I that is not necessarily that is not a fair comparison because and I want to bring up this point to you and this is this is actually my closing point. which is that you brought up Volkswagen? Volkswagen they they broke the law. Like okay yes. If talk about breaking the law that is bad no matter what but the bad talk about the Mustang there. Nothing bad happens because it's called the Mustang. Nothing no one. No one gets their livelihood taken away. Nothing bad happens except and and I think Ford has faith at over time that this is going to be good for Mustang and good for the actual sports car Mustang and not bad so I think ultimately whether people are talking about hating the name or loving it. They're talking about the vehicle and that gives Ford Way more penetration into the mindshare mindshare of potential shoppers. Then it would have otherwise. We're still talking about it and we probably will be for weeks if not months on end but if Ford had just knocked it out of the park with a vehicle that you can't not talk about you don't need to put Mustang on it but that's why you can't you can't do that. Tesla share you can no you yeah you just use hunker down and you do the math and you come out with a good vehicle and honestly I think this mock e is that vehicle I I don't think Ford needed to put the Mustang to try to engage people's passion. I think the only thing because I think the only thing they're doing and I've seen this before at Ford with with various models and various rollouts where it's like we're GonNa try to build vehicle. We could possibly build it better but instead of really trying to go that extra distance. We're going to try to wrap it up in some interesting brandy and we're GONNA try to give you know pull here. Yeah Yeah I think I think it is I really do you. Can't you know automaker can blow tasks out of the water in terms of specs respects. It's not like Ford has the technology and it's back pocket to make a four hundred mile range. They just can't do it they they. What they've managed to do was making vehicle that has come? The closest tesla any other vehicle has and has has matched Tesla on many fronts but it it surpasses Tesla uh-huh few if any and actually falls behind on a few others. The only I would say that. Come out that has exceeded Tesla on a few fronts. Is the Porsche take in. And that's only on a few fronts charging speed and handling you could argue that every automaker exceeds Tesla on maybe like finish or or quality the of craftsmanship. That's one thing but but the thing is I think four new like look we we have made probably the best. Ev to challenge Tesla Tesla. But we haven't blown out of the water and we also know that Tesla has this extra special ingredient of the passion and and loyalty realty that it stirs in people. And we'd somehow add that as well and I just think they they didn't want to trust it to just the Blue Oval Badge on the front or or any other brand that they had in the portfolio. They thought that they could make an emotional reaction by using Mustang. And and I I think it's GonNa blow over eventually especially when the car start getting people's hands and people started driving them two years from now a year from now But eventually you're gonNA find a die hard Ford person who's complaining now who ends up buying a mock easy to use as their daily driver with a bunch which of other regular mustangs in the garage for the weekend. And that's GonNa that's GonNa be shown to be like the the the most awesome setup and and I think it will actually start start being bought by those fifty older Mustang people. I I'm just I'm not seen it happen. I'm not seeing it happen. And you know it's it's interesting that you pointed out that Ford used its most storied nameplate. It's most storied moniker that it has in its inventory to make vehicle that kinda competes with Tesla. Aw that that that kind of that sells it right. There for couldn't make something that they felt was a full-on knock it out of the park. Hey the thing is awesome and it's going to dominate segment. They knew okay. We're GONNA try to wrap this up and sell a lifestyle because we're not quite there yet. It.

Amnesty on immigration your thoughts about any potential areas of bipartisanship. Well, I think first of all bipartisanship is probably less likely outcome. But to the extent that they do work together. I I agree. I think ObamaCare needs to be stabilized at some point in two thousand nine hundred. I think those premiums for next year for twenty twenty that is going to escalate significantly unless they're able to get some kind of stabilization package in place. So I do see that being one area potentially. They'll go to. And then the second I twentieth infrastructure. I think that the need to repair our roads and our bridges and our ports. That's something that both sides have probably decided is a good idea. The question is just getting around to executing on it immigration. I would hope they'd be able to reach consensus, but it's been such a heart issue. We haven't been able to deal with it for over a decade in part because so politically fraught, so I'd go to infrastructure and ObamaCare, I is busting the deficit wide open and adding to the debt still a subject of bipartisan consensus broad agreement of spending more borrowing more good idea we saw that with the tax. Bill. We saw it with the stimulus Bill before that during the Obama administration. We saw it with ObamaCare. It's much easier for politicians to spend now and worry about the Bill later, and I fully expect that is exactly the kind of public policy making we're going to see for years to come. If Democrats go as far as some thought they would. And I'll grant you that some of the people coming in as likely new committee chairs of backed off a bit on things like impeachment. But if they go down that road and investigating the Trump family and tax returns them to like get in the president states. We all know how the president reacts to look at it states. We could easily have two years of of complete gridlock. Could we not not only gridlock? But I think nastiness in our dialogue in our rhetoric far worse than what we've seen already. I think the president thrives off of conflict. That's when he does best. When there is this dynamic of him versus another side, that's pressing him. And so Democrats would be smart. I think take a step back and back off a little bit and figure out ways essentially to to to create. Opportunities for contrast. Yes. But in terms of direct confrontation, I have a tough time seeing how that ends well for Democrats. And in fact, I think that's exactly what President Trump wants Lottie Chen of the Hoover Institution and Stanford University before that Frank Buckley from George Mason, University Scalia law school, the author of the Republican Workers Party published by counter fourteen till when America in the morning returns..

"Foreign assistance from arizona auburn usc and oklahoma state espn's jeff goodman with all of these details to try to digest what do you feel like is the most important among them well having ten people being arrested by the fbi this morning you can start with that and i think the uncertainty of where this goes scott that's the most important because those ten could role could plea and it could be chained up fifty in the span of a day or two because each one of these ten is going to try to avoid jail time which is what they're looking at right now so ultimately the un's sir the of where this goes with the sport i think that's the biggest thing right now yeah i mean look there's a big difference that one letter difference between fbi at incidentally three letters versus poor man you could light of the nc aa you can stole all the aa no one's going to school rally the fbi and that's what we're talking about here louisville and you you had this tweet earlier in the afternoon they've acknowledged that while they are not named specifically there's all these schools is the universe and tan in player this other thing if this does connect a little given the fact that there are on probation right now jeff how can patino not be doomed it's tough through imagine i mean we're we're gonna speculate here because we don't know all the facts what we no isn't an assistant coach from blue oval was involved right now and the fbi has got it taped with him being evolve in a situation where the deed this with the financial guys so certainly it doesn't look good now rick pitino can say he didn't know which is what he did last time with the stripper scandal and andrei mcgee but how many times can you do that and get away with it at a university like louisville how many times is tom jurij going to stand by rick pitino how many times is tom shirts go to survive himself so i think you're already this is three strikes for it bettino and again we don't know where this is going to go how much deeper they haven't talked patino yet to my knowledge will they does this become a legal matter does this has become an inch who got away matter does rip patino to say you know what i'm done at this.
