A highlight from The Engineering Challenge of Rapidly Reusable Rockets
"200 years ago, we were sailing around on wooden tall ships. That's how we got across oceans. And in those days, transportation was slow, expensive, and unreliable. And in many ways, those are exactly the three words that describe space transportation. You know, you'd never throw away a 737 after every single flight, right? That's pretty obvious. And so the same thing is true with rocketry. There's no reason you would want to throw away the vehicle if you didn't have to. Start asking yourself questions. What are the important problems that need to be solved? And how can I go and do this in a way that's a sustainable business? We're in like the 1930s and 40s for space. We have a lot of different ideas that are being tested. And in my opinion, mastering the first stage reuse and the second stage reuse are the two ingredients that are going to lead to mega consolidation and then also a healthy and thriving economy. Hi, everyone, and welcome back to the A16Z podcast. This is part two of our mini series on the booming satellite economy. In part one, we spoke with Astronis co -founder John Gedmark about the opportunity to build smaller satellites in geostationary orbit and who's actually buying that satellite capability. But ultimately, in order to build this computation shell around Earth full of thousands of satellites, rocket usability is an important unlock. So today we're joined by Andy Lapsa, co -founder of Stokespace, who after spending over a decade at Blue Origin is now on a mission to build fully and rapidly reusable rockets with the hopes of reusing both stages and also allowing daily reusability. Like Astronis, Stoke is growing quickly and also has customers in both the commercial and government sectors. And if you need any convincing of just how hard this engineering challenge is, well, the original launches of the Falcon 1 failed due to things as small as a corroded nut. And between launches, it might take as much as a year to get something back in the sky. So what are we looking at now in terms of testing cycles, given that we're on Falcon 9 and also new companies like Stoke are trying to get in on the action? So listen in as Andy gives us a glimpse into this truly outworldly engineering challenge of not just getting to space, but also doing so reliably over and over and over again. Alright, prepare for liftoff. aless estimates as the Swiss lender benefited from searching fee income at its wealth management and investment banking businesses while also warning that client activity is expected to slow in the final months of the year although of course that's partly to be expected towards the end of the year Bloomberg's Manus franny sat down with the CEO in Zürich to pick apart all of those numbers He began by asking whether the strong top line and the strongest top line in 15 years was actually a sweet spot for UBS have a listen to the big interview On one side you see risk on the other side you see the investment sentiment investor sentiment to be a little bit around the inflation numbers that are coming up and are seeking advice as to okay how do we best protect really well against upcoming inflation Wait where do you see inflation top of middle of next year seems to be the building consensus Do you agree Same here If you look at the underlying factors called any inflation it's clear the energy prices It is some of the supply chain hiccups that we see It is a bit of the friction in the labor markets that we see as well We do expect you know the consumers spent to move away from goods to services that should help lift the tension on some of these as well And at that moment we also feel that the supply chain is probably up and running again Demand will be a bit lower than for those goods And then hopefully we'll get in a more balanced situation and then the inflation will come down To China we're trying to glean leaders like you you're taking where we are The ever ground exposure your direct exposure is immaterial You've told that to the market I want to get a sense from you as has the worst past in China with ever grand and the reorchestration of the economy While they just announced the move to a common prosperity right In terms of their policy So I do think there is probably more policy changes as part of that coming through This time it was around the property market I do think it's going to be also around healthcare is going to be about some social welfare as well in terms of unemployment benefits building a pension system et cetera et cetera et cetera So I do think more changes will come to the market Those will be all incremental Some will have negative effects on the life very positive effects So for us we will go through that We've been committed to the market for a long time And we see that very strategic As with HSBC essay they were sort of almost full bull on China Are you full bull on China I'm strategically football in China Absolutely who can't be right We know the country very well We're very successful in the country both in the onshore business and the offshore business We have a very good combination of businesses in the wealth IB and asset management business And we plan to invest more Okay so that was rather famous that the CEO of UBS speaking to Bloomberg's Manus cranny there of course interesting to look at the share price of UBS this morning in reaction up by 2.2% on those profits for the third quarter and UBS saying that they're comfortable with banker pay interesting for this very significant quarter net income considerably above estimates for UBS Right let's get to the sports news now.

Like but shatner in space is kinda cool captain kirk. He paid frontiers by being part of the first interracial. Kiss on television now. He is a pioneer being the oldest due to go to space. Yeah i think. I heard somewhere that he like made out or had very significant amount of alien relationships in star. "Builders and innovators summit in the heart of cinema wine country in hillsburg California We've got a new oldest person to go to space now Star Trek's captain Kirk AKA William Shatner has touched down in van horn Texas are at ludlow joins us now with San Francisco for the latest on Blue Origin's mission and I'm having flashbacks to being in van horn and watching Jeff Bezos touch down safely Sounds like this one went off without a hitch Yeah thankfully he can live long and prosper forgive the pump You know his mission successful it's the second crude flight that's gone to plan it was Emily chuckles away But it was so fascinating because William Shatner was visibly moved after returning back down to earth Here's what he had to say What you have given me Is the most profound experience I'm so filled with emotion about what just happened I just it's extraordinary I mean just an astonishing reaction for a man that was such a sci-fi icon in the 60s a figure of the future of space and now he's actually lived at Emily astonishing Astonishing indeed look they say it's not a competition but of course it's a competition I mean how would you put this Blue Origin mission in the context of what we just saw with SpaceX and inspiration for Yeah look at 62 miles Apigee above the earth It is a fraction of what space execute with the inspiration for mission right which was 320 mile orbit for three consecutive days But this is the business model for Laura Jen This is what they want to sell William Shatner was flying for free of course paid for by Bezos and Blue Origin but they want to attract high net worth individuals who are willing to pay for just that few moments of weightlessness in space and we know from Brad stone's book for example that there's pressure internally in Blue Origin to really ramp up the frequency of launches they're doing So we are officially seeing space tourism now in action What is the future of this Are there really going to be hundreds of these flights going up and coming down every day It's really hard to gauge in a virgin galactic is now going to charge $450,000 a pop for its launch system for pretty similar experience After SpaceX finished the inspiration for mission they said they were backlogged basically They had a list of willing paying customers who wanted that three day or the toy experience but they simply couldn't meet the demand They can only launch a few times a year UBS reckons this is a $4 billion a year industry by 2030 But until we get some real detail on how much a per flight cost is or who those buyers actually are as you know Emily we've discussed it This is a rich man's sport and right now it's certainly being bankrolled by the billionaires All right I'd love low in San Francisco and thank you for that update glad everyone is happy and safe I want to get back to our exclusive conversation with Goldman Sachs co head of investment banking dandies I asked him about the number of companies taking the traditional IPO route versus going this back and direct listing way new phenomenon there Take a listen to what he had to say There's still the minority of the things More companies are still choosing the traditional path of a traditional IPO We continue to innovate on the traditional IPO and find new ways to do price discovery Because there are folks who say that traditional path is broken Yeah Yeah And I don't believe the traditional path is broken I think the direct listing pack.

Where Space Begins: Bezos' Blue Origin vs. Branson's Virgin Galactic
"This morning in a remote part of the west texas desert the world richest man amazon founder. Jeff bezos plans to take off for a trip to space. It's the first space flight with passengers on board for his company. blue origin. Now if you were paying attention nine days ago another billionaire. Richard branson took a flight to space with his company virgin. Galactic bezos is flight will be a little different in how it launches and where the passengers will go. But the difference is don't stop there. They extend to the goals and ambitions of both companies and to discuss that. We have a reporter mike. Berg who covers the business of space for the wall street journal back on the show. I'm mike thanks for joining us again so nine days ago you were in new mexico watching the virgin galactic flight with richard branson launch. Now you're in texas for the blue origin launch. What are some of the differences you expect to see when this flight takes off. Yeah i mean the biggest difference just sort of visually blue origin uses a rocket to get the space. We're going to see literally the new scheffer rocket flare up into at very high speeds into space. And then you know we won't see this but a capsule detach and float into space and then the rocket will return to the launch pad. Virgin galactic of course uses a different method. They've got a kind high-flying airplane that flies up. You know the way you would see at an airport and the space craft the virgin galactic spacecraft attached to the rocket detaches at about forty five thousand feet and then it sort of rockets up into space from there. So you'll literally see the

Branson, Bezos, Musk: The Billionaire Space Race
"Richard branson's being outed longer than the others. Seventeen years or so since richard branson. I announced his ambitions. Two thousand four. When virgin galactic was started. I think back then the intention walls within three or four years. They be doing what they've only just done now of of taking passengers into space but for him dates back and he. He talks about this a lot. Doesn't it back to nineteen sixty nine and watching the moon landing a teenager. We choose to go to the moon and and do the other thing not because they are easy being taken outside by his dad and the pointing up at the moon and realizing there were two men up there east folks at one of those men buzz aldrin in the nineties and and talked about the idea of using plane rather than a traditional rocket as so. The idea is been fermenting for a long time lot of setbacks on the way of course. I think a lot of us wonder whether this would ever happen. He's proved he can do it. And i think that for him is why this is so emotionally significant but also practically significant in a business sense as well. Let's go through the others then we go elon. Musk of tesla. Fame with space. X.'s dragon capsule and he's the best known for his space ambitions around the world. Think just because of his global profile that he has and has had a lot of success with the commercial side of this deals with nasa of taking things up into orbital space which of course is much further than branson or some of the tourism operations are going and has talked in perhaps much greater ambition. About what could be done. He's talked about colonizing mars. Easy said he wants to go to mars. he's also said people might die. Going to mars but ambitions seemed to be much bigger and grander than just space tourism. And someone who through his life has solve the big problems as he's seen them around the world and this is one he sees that needs to be solved by the private sector. Then making up the triumvirate. Jeff bezos of amazon fame. What of his ambitions. what's his rocket. Program is interesting isn't because he there's far less publicity with with. Jeff bezos a blue origin. The company that will take him into space has been around for twenty years so longer than branson's virgin galactic but his plans all rooted much further back than that he he talks of colonizing space of building these holds where trillions of people can live something. It's thought he took from a professor. He had at princeton physicist. Who came up with his idea in the seventies so he has these grand ambitions that pass. He doesn't talk about as much as richard branson alone. Musk but which are very rooted in in history and clearly having left amazon this is now his focus on taking humans where they where they've not come

Some investors have doubts but not virgin CEO Michael Cole glaze here. I think the financial model here is going to be very robust, Beso says, planning his trip further out into space than Branson in the coming days. Blue Origin also says it's windows are bigger. White Hart says space travel is way bigger than just the passenger business and watch for satellite space based data center, space cell phone service and solar energy to all skyrocket. Space has to be industrialized of 11. Billion people are going to survive on this planet in 15 years time.

Branson and Bezos Brace for Blast-off in Billionaire Space Race
"Entrepreneurs heading into space are a bit like buses. You wait ages and then to come along almost at once, First up, Sir Richard Branson and his unity rocket plane. Taking off from a spaceport in New Mexico. The Virgin Galactic crew should reach a height of 50 miles or 80, kilometers above the Earth's surface, according to NASA. That's where the atmosphere ends. So Sir Richard will officially become an astronaut. I've always been a dreamer my mom taught me to never give up. To reach for the stars. It's July, our dream will become a reality. And we're really excited to share that moment with your The Virgin Galactic program stretches back nearly 20 years and hasn't always gone smoothly. In 2014, a pilot was killed during a test flight over the Mojave Desert. This is only the beginning. Soon enough, Jeff Bezoza will take off in his blue origin rocket. Some critics say this is simply the folly of rich men and question the logic of commercial space travel when the skies are already full of junk, But for others, it's all about reaching for the Stars. Virgin Galactic plan to start commercial services in 2022. Said they could be running 100 flights a year, 12 months later.
