"So that's what we wanna do when we're feeling really overwhelmed and i know it's happening to everybody so Someone asked when the next book group is. We had a book group. This monday and the next one is in two weeks so that would be the twenty eighth five thirty to six thirty central time pm. There were several people who didn't get into the boat group. And i think i've i've think i've mentioned this a few times but probably if you're not a you know if you're a lot of times anything about zoom or the technology of stuff it's just over our heads right but the way blue lotus has set it up if you go to event bright and you can go directly to event bright. This is the easiest way go online to event bright dot com and you put in a search. Here's a little search thing for blue lotus temple and then all of our activities are on that just lined up beautifully and the right there at event bright. There's no charge for the book group but e all of our activities are most of them a lot of them. You have to get that event bright ticket because that is automating the system for us and then you'll get your lake. Usually that will. It's always at least an hour before the event so what you can do. Oh someone just gave me some advice. Maybe it's the volume button on my mom's phone. Thank you because she's always pushing the wrong buttons. Okay thank you. Sorry back to peck to the book. Group goto event. Bright dot com. You can see the list of all the events you might want to check out and so you can press to get your ticket. But there's no charge And you have to sign up for each book group. You can't you. Don't just get one lincoln. It's good for all of them because our system isn't set up that way That set in florida with florida blue lotus meditation center. That's how it set up. They have one link but For different things at blue lotus. You get a different link so Nancy's swabbed told me that she went in and she just signed up and got what we call tickets with event. Bright tickets for all the upcoming book groups. Now if you can't go don't worry about that but because there's an unlimited number of tickets we could we could have so you can just sign up for all the ones you can sign up for and then when it sta probably that takes you through maybe through this year. But then they'll be updated and so Keep reminding people during the book group. Then you have to keep getting a ticket for each time. You can't use the previous link so it it takes a second you press you get a ticket and they send you the information but they but you have to do it for each book group and the book group is twice a month. It is It was this week. So that's this. Second and the fourth mondays i think so..

"It. It's okay to just sit with this feeling warmth and friendliness. With yourself about yourself. We need to be able to love ourselves before. Were able to send love out to others and we can practice meta even when we know there those pockets of low self esteem or Kind of buying into the opinions of others. We can complete the practice but the most important thing is to really experienced that loving kindness towards ourselves. And then we understand how it how important is the send it out to others and and sharing sharing that is natural outflow of having it for ourselves so if you consider a little longer and just be with yourself and get in touch with that basic goodness and get in touch with the person you really are not what others want to make of you so have a beautiful day. I'll see you tomorrow and There are so many. Good things going on on saturday Check around online. There are some. there's a free Free talk the bari. And the bari. Meditation center in massachusetts b. a. r. e. and it's a free program in it's on racial injustice and how to how we can work with that There things going on at blue lotus. And there's a lot going on. I noticed so if you want to have day make a little like a half day. Many retreat for yourself easy. It'll be easy to do on saturday. So take care of yourself and love yourself and that's what we all need to be doing. Okay see friday c. Two s tomorrow..

"I need to read this. Because sometimes it's hard doesn't come to my memory automatically but let's practice this together. I will try to put an insane try. I'll try to put as much as i can on i'll anything i put on my facebook page. I'll share with blue lotus temple. The temples closed right now so all of their services are going to be either a facebook live or if they have a guest speaker from somewhere else it'll be on zoom so they'll still be active but The decision was made. And i think appropriately so to close the temple to the groups who have been coming for monday and wednesday and saturday and the only life thing going on In person live will be the lunches on saturday that the monks will still be doing inside and then people drive. It's like a drive through because you can drive through the alley order your food ahead of time and then there'll be people bringing it out to your car just outside the kitchen door so they'll be being extremely careful in. The food is all for fair prepared in the professional kitchen and That's best keeping our monks going financially. So sit in your relaxed position that allows you to have a straits. Even if you're on the floor you can. You can straighten your spine so your long have maximum space for breathing. We're we let her body. Do the breathing. We can just be aware of our breath of our body breathing for us. That for me these days. I grateful thing i think of when they do gratitude practice. I can observe my body breathing breathing for me. And when i'm sitting up straight are standing even lying in bed. I can just be aware of the body breathing. just doing it automatically and with our with our spine uplifted. We know that those lungs are getting in full amount of air we can feel it pushing on her diaphragm and that's what causes her tummy to rise and fall. That's a beautiful thing to be observing these days so whenever you need to come back to observe in your breath observe your body breathing and allow it to breath. The way wants to breathe which is to take in more air. We don't have to force it. We don't half to be in charge. We just.

"And try to be aware of. How wonderful, it would be to be independent. Of. Those worldly concerns and to live without clinging to any of them. We know there. We see them. We see them all the time, but the Buddhist teaching about not clinging to those things. And We can acknowledge them when we see them rising up in us, but we can work with them and know that we. That, we don't want to be clinging to them. We want to go beyond that. So My sermon for today right tomorrow I'm going to be at Blue Lotus in woodstock and it's it is the first time I've been there. To. To guide a meditation and do a short talk Since. Since the pandemic began. My I've made the decision to do most of my work. As a beacon e more. Independently and just more right now it's an ideal time because I'm doing everything virtually. But I'm. Not, going to be at the temple all the time but I'm definitely Definitely it still my community so that's hasn't that hasn't changed at all. So everybody I want to to sit today I. Think. I had just read about ten percent happier. So Meditation Challenge and then Nancy Schwab sent me a friend's invitation to join that. So I've was late coming to it. and. If you if you have that APP where you can get the APP and then just do the. The. Seven Day. Meditations they're short and the one this morning was on what we call. Madida or sympathetic joy. And that's it was a little bit different from it was a a beautiful. Ten minute meditation but she talked about borrowing joy. And I think a borrowing joy from others that though that was just a different terminology than I? I use but I guess we can definitely think of it that way. We can share in the joy of others, and so that's I think a lot of us are doing that by those of you who have pets. And you share your pets with your neighbors like my neighbors do and feet if you're feeding birds and squirrels and you're you're seeing these beautiful creatures and I don't know if they're feeling joy or if they're just desperate to get. Their bodies fat enough to hibernate. But I do know that that creates joy in us we can. We can Enjoy just being connected to those little beings and it brings joy. That's my favorite way. But. I thought it was it was good ten minute meditation and it was a beautiful just listening to her..

"Of. Having expectations of myself to be sort of profound and brilliant. And up totally clear speaking. And just let it go. When I first started doing this. Live. And I know it's on Youtube now with the Blue Lotus. Temple things. But when I first started, it was early in the pandemic just about three weeks in. And what I, what I my my feeling was very powerful and strong that we are missing that face to face contact with each other. All of us are and so instead of just having a podcast it I felt it was important to to be able to. Show, my face, you know to be to be a person to pee real that way. And it would have been so much easier to not have to do that. But it felt like it's part of my own practice and as a part of helping other people in some way. Letting it be that. We could have some kind of. Of just You can see my face while I'm talking and the people who do respond or The I can see name sometimes I don't know who the people are, but I'll notice a name that I see quite frequently. And other people that I've known for a long time. So it's it, I felt that was important during the during this entire period of the isolation we've been we've been feeling. But. If I didn't have a sense of humor, I would have stopped after the first week because sometimes it's painful to sit and watch yourself. So. I feel like it's been. It's been good for me because it certainly helped me get over some of that. Get over myself right? So. I and I always feel grateful that my family. My. Brothers and my mom and Dad I'll I think they had A. My mom could be pretty much A. Often self-righteous or not so much anymore but she could be pretty self righteous. and. Then she would then she would bust out with something that was so funny or she would you know would be able to laugh at a joke one of US kids to it was probably kinda stupid or really silly. But I can remember her humor breaking through some of the Times that she was being kind of uptight and count delightful it was to see her just get so tickled about something. And and I felt I feel really fortunate that my My two kids are are so funny and we enjoy we have so much fun just. I don't know being being humorous with each other doing silly things together. So those are blessings in my life and my brothers are funny. My nephews nieces are funny. and My.

"Deal with? feelings of despair or feelings of being overwhelmed. It's It's there's nothing wrong with having those feelings. But I I'd like you to think about what your practice and I'm talking to people who are listening to me who. Who are interested in meditation interested in? In at least checking out some of the teachings of the Buddha. So. How are we using those teachings? Not just to be something that we're interested in? But. How are we putting them into practice in our daily lives? And one of the things that we use to keep our spirits up. and to keep ourselves. Meeting each day with. An attitude of. Some joy? And peace and tranquility and. Hope. And being content. Finding things to appreciate in our day. So are you? How are you? Focusing your daily living practice. Around doing that. Because this has gone on for a long time for all of us. And I know we've all have periods of feeling deflated. And probably other times when we felt very confident. But I think it's a it's good to check in occasionally with Okay Howe's my daily practice. And I mean in everything you do how do you help yourself rise up above the? the fear the anxiety that we see. And the confusion about what the future will look like. So. What I wanted to do today was to a Meta practice but also. Read, something from Mahto durins book just another. Another daily setting track this. That's good. That would be good. So if you need one or both you can maybe. Come back and listen to this. facebook. These facebook meditations. Or find them on youtube for Blue Lotus. Buddhist temple. though all my talks are on that. So if you if you somedays need to sit and your mind is racing, you have you have something that's you can come back to and listen to and maybe that can help you get..

Finding Your Balance

Finding Your Balance

"Good Morning. We love and I'm here in Crystal Lake Illinois. And wanted to spend a little time with you. Hope Everyone's fine. And Hope you're. Dealing with all the different new things coming up in your life like being students online or live for a combination of the two. Or going back to work or continuing to stay home and work from home. Or looking for a job or Trying to to decide what's the next course you want to take or thing you want to learn online. We have lots of things going on these days and I hope you're finding a way to be. Peaceful with that and have Have some dispassionate equanimity could time to work on our equanimity, right? That's the quality of balance. and. Taking a step back and being able to see things. Without. So much of our self involvement being able to be a little bit dispassionate. Find Balance and everything. So I always like to think of it as back away beck away from Mecca way not not out of indifference at all but out of. That Maybe we sometimes can be too aggressively putting ourselves in the middle of a situation. Really we are more of A. We can be more of a bystander and be more valuable to people in the situation. and. You know that feeling when you when you realize oh I, wish I just kept my mouth shut and not. Made that comment on facebook or not said something that you know that that made the situation not better but probably just. kind of hit the hit something that just immediately. Created. Created. A. A little minor explosion and a conversation or relationship. And sometimes that's because we we aren't able to become have that equanimity at work. You know there's a little. There's a little bit too much of our ego in a situation. So we just need to say something that maybe probably would be better if we didn't say it. I know that's one way I look at equanimity. Does back away? Think about the situation think about it a little bit more. find her own balance with an it without getting carried away by the emotion of the moment. And we can work with equanimity in so many situations and I think it's a beautiful quality for us to develop right now. Because we have a lot of opportunities before we we feel like. We are free from the effects of the pandemic. That's going to be a long time before free from the economic effects and the psychological effects and the physical effects. The way it's changed our landscape just physically the people we've lost. Maybe the people who were recovering from covid nineteen and the the. The. The long lasting effects that they might be having to deal with and how it affects our society in the long run. So develop equanimity along with compassion and loving kindness and. I am so which is no harm. So, we can have our hands full just with. seeing how we can those are the best ways we can be people in this world is to work on those qualities work on a deeper understanding of yourself. And then that's what it all comes back to because we have to know. What our little triggers are we have to know. We have to know about ourself. and. Then we can be more effective in a more Compassionate person for the rest of the world. So. Let me start with my wish. And I think that's good guidance I hope everyone's memorized it. Okay. He working on it if you haven't because it can be there for you when you need it. Or. The Saint. Francis prayer. May I become at all times both now and forever. A protector for those without protection. A guy for those who have lost their way. A ship for those with an ocean to cross. A. Sanctuary for those endanger. A lamp for those without light. A place of refuge for those who like shelter and a servant to all in need. By by means of this meritorious deed, May I never join with the unwise only the wise until the time I attain the Bonna. That close to you because that gives us. Wonderful Advice. And it also gives us a challenge. You know to reach out to be to be able to. See clearly what's going on in the world where we can help

Living In A Groundhog Day

"Good morning everybody. It's Iowa Mala and it's Thursday morning July thirtieth. Look. It's low cooler today here. So maybe it's cooling off. Where you are to hope your weather we having nice weather as we enter the end of the summer. Wow I was just thinking. Just a few minutes ago at one of my favorite movies is groundhog day and if you haven't watched the movie. What's the movie because I realized thinking about it We're living in a kind of groundhog. Day. And our temple is in Woodstock. Illinois and that's where the groundhog day movie was made. And so it there's a there's a great affection for Bill Murray and for the making of the movie and Woodstock Has A. GROUNDHOG's Day big festive weekend festival every year. So It's meaningful but. Before I had ever seen it. be a friend of mine. told me. It's the most Buddhist movie I've ever seen in. This is longtime ago when the movie was new. And I had to watch it two times to to get it. I think that was maybe even before I was a Buddhist or. had read anything or I don't know where my mind was when I first saw it. But It's one of those movies I can watch over and over again there are so many beautiful lessons in it and it's so funny and enjoyable it. It's a perfect pandemic movie. So if you I know I know I think now it's even on Netflix's I was looking for about a year ago. To let people know where they could find it and I couldn't find it anywhere on any kind of streaming media. Uh someone just sent a message Glenn Powers He sets my dad was an extra in groundhog day. That's great. So it's part of your family. Lower that's good. People talked about a bill. Murray would F- Baseball Games? For. The. People. And each state and he stayed in Woodstock, stock while the movie was being made. Just, this past year he did commercials in Woodstock that I just accidentally with a few other friends. We were having lunch on the square after. Right after temple on Saturday and. Bill. was shooting commercials so we got to watch him. And just kind of re live and they're the best they were I. Think they were given the best commercial. Honors for the. Super Bowl. You can see the jeep commercials. If you go on Youtube you can see they're just wonderful delightful commercials. So anyway, those little sight stories, but groundhog day is so similar to what we're living through. Now every we can wake up and we don't even know what day of the week it is. And it just keeps going. So I think that was that's what surprised all of us is. What a ride the suspend. An and it still is we don't see really any signs of things. Getting better right now. So if you watch that movie I, it will inspire you. Because, well, you'll see you'll get it when you watch it but That's we you know we all have bumps in the road of adjusting and dealing with a situation that throws us off balance but I'm hoping that most of you have found a reason. To wake up every day and have something interesting you WanNa do or something that you're that you're working on that you never had time to do before or you're getting little projects don you never had time to do before? that. You're taking zoom classes or you're reading or tuning into special classes on you to. We can use. Streaming media and things like. Youtube and things like. Facebook I'm recording this on facebook. We can use all of this stuff that. That before being I was I wanted to be off facebook I had no use for it. Before the pandemic and now I find that it's it's just a beautiful. Communication vehicle so. And I can I can do it. So it's very low tech so That's a good thing too. But. We can discover the good things about maybe technology that we that we didn't feel very good about before. We can. We can stay connected with people, which is now we really understand how important it is. And, we can find out about what's going on all over the world. And we don't have to stay We don't have to stay in the dark about what's really happening. We can investigate things and find out what's going on. So let this be your. Bill Murray Groundhog Day experience, and when you see the movie, If you haven't seen it, you must see it and when you do see at your your understand. and. I think it'll make every day a little bit more bright for you. So. There's so much. We can all be learning and we can be learning to understand just. Almost all of the Buddhist teachings. This is perfect. This is a perfect retreat for us a perfect workshop. And I know a lot of you don't feel like it's a retreat because you're still working and you're still having to deal with things that are scary and frightening and. You're worried about your kids and what we're going do about school and we're all worried about so many things but. I don't want to minimize any of that. But at the same time, this is a time for us to look look inside of us. Find the joy of helping other people find the joy of finding of really understanding. Some of the things that are important to us and the people who are important to us and understanding ourselves. So use it to be. Something that you can look back on and think. I I got a lot of good out of it

"Good Morning Siwa Friday. Very rainy outside here. Kind of Thundery, light. Thunder but a lot of Noah lot of. A lot of funder I don't see much lightning. so hope your superior. You're having either needed. Rain or You're feeling cozy like it's a day, you can spend inside and you. You're appreciating that you're you're. You may be totally different weather so a different situation altogether. It feels it feels a little bit nicest morning just because. I woke up to a head. Just enough time to feed my squirrels and chipmunks and birds outside came back in and. Before I knew it. It was raining, so it doesn't seem to bother them at all. Oh, that's good. So. Let's start out the day. With our my wish. Let's do that together, so we can. If you have memorized at yet, you'll be back back in the saddle with and remember this. My wish is part of the US from shanty. Daiwa an eighth century Buddhist monk in India. In. This part of heart of writing from Shanty David too too small. Extract and I think it fits beautifully for the Times. We're living in right now. It's it seems always appropriate who we think about. What we want the compassion we feel towards the world. But, this is specially now. I think it just is heightened. And when I opened a book this morning, the first thing just fell out of the book was one of the blessing cards that That I was able to put together with a committee at blue, Lotus Temple and it was originally to calf blessing carts to give to the detained immigrants at the county jail, and now we have them in French and Spanish and England English and we haven't been able to. All the cards were ready and French and Spanish lovely little packs to sell the temple to support the printing. The our committee was doing at the temple. We never got to put them up because we closed. Was Right as a pandemic started, but we have the English ones there and. They are. When I volunteered at the jail now we can't go to jail, but when we were going to the jail. the Catholics always had the beautiful blessing cards, prayer cards, and I've never been a Catholic I've been a lot of other things, but never almost, but never a Catholic and I always have the little prayer cards, and so the committee at Blue Lotus and I put together a set. With all of the seven wishes and blessed in the the. The. The blessings, the prayers for the people who need protection and our compassion. With. We made a separate card for each line of the my wish, and then we found a picture that we thought would be something. Someone could look at it in their cell, and have a feeling for that line or a feeling of the outdoors something that they were unable to to have and some color and some light in their room are there? They're bit by their bed. And they were very popular at the jails they were. We ran out of we had thousands and thousands of the cards and the English ones were picked up very quickly by volunteers, and then we printed the Spanish ones, and we had just distributed some of those and then French But they haven't. They're sitting. Most of them are in my closet and summer already packaged in the Little Organza bags that we put seven of them to match all the lines in a little package that we were wanting to sell at the temple to raise money to print more of the cards, but hid has my wish on the back of the cards has my wish, and so they're wonderful to hand out to people, and they fit purpose perfectly in the in a wallet or pocket. And our printer suggested this size because. It's a typical size for a prayer card she. Does. She said this is something. Someone can take with them everywhere. They go and we know that when the detained immigrants are. Sent back to countries. Were they either going back home where they have so much to remember? About the time that they've they've spent in detained in detainment. So many of them are sent back to countries where they might never have lived or were. They don't no longer have family. But to have something like this in their pocket or in their wallet that just gives them a can give them a sense that there are people who care. And that there is there is slight in the world, and there are people who who are trying to do the best they can do. And, so it's so wonderful to have this. Just drop drop in my lap morning. And that's the same. My wish that we're learning and reading together now every morning. So let's start with that. And then we'll talk a little bit, and we'll end the meditation this warning with the same the same I wish. May I become at all times, both now and forever a protector for those without protection, a guide for those who've lost their way. I shook for those with the notion to cross a sanctuary for those endanger. A land for those without light, a place of refuge, for those who lack shelter and a servant to all in the. By means of this meritorious deed may I never join with the unwise only the wise until the time I attain the Bonna. Beautiful. And some of US might be thinking. We didn't have to look very far during this pandemic to. To be a servant to all in need, because for many of you, you had your family's right there at home and you could see when they were needing something. Are you could see your? Friends who you were just having? A sporadic contact with, but you could see what their needs were. You could see what they were going through and You could be. You could be there for them. And hopefully that's that's how you experienced it to. That it was a wonderful time for you than it is and has been. A really powerful time for you to practice compassion. And understanding, and hopefully every day has been a challenge for your practice and one. That may be some days. You felt like you did a great job other days, not so sure. But every day you could start over again. and not carry any remorse or guilt about the day before, but every day we can start over. And remember that about everything, we're going through right now whatever you've been through. We can't drag things around with us that we aren't feeling good about or that. We Have A. Difficult emotions over, or we have anger around or sadness around. It's really important for us to get that cleared away. And that we deal with it. And then let it go, so we can start. We can start fresh. And and I see that in my own life. I had I did something if? Several weeks ago, that that in four afterthought really thought I shouldn't have done that I.

Best Meditation Practices

"Good Morning. It's Tuesday morning June twenty third. And, I'm be Coney Huila from Blue Lotus in crystal lake. Well. I live in crystal, Lake Illinois, and the temple is in Woodstock Illinois. Out Today is Beautiful Day here. It's been a little stormy. How is how is your place? How are you this morning? How's your mind? Getting enough movement. Enough exercise. I don't think I am I have to work on that harder. Too much sitting at the computer. So today. I wanted to start with a question someone had sent. Asking if which is best one thirty minutes sitting day for your meditation practice. Or doing six. Five minute short meditations during the day. And that's a that's A. It's a good question. It's interesting. I think for some people. When they begin, the five minutes might be all. They feel they they can handle. All, they feel they can sit still for. They may not see. They may not be really committed to. The practice and just trying it out so if that's the case. I'd say try the five minutes as often as you can during the day and see how you feel. But. In terms of The real benefits of meditation I think working towards that thirty minute. Time every day is better for us because we are really then able to begin developing the stillness. The saw Mata the the tranquility our bodies. And the slowing down. And allowing us to then access. The the deeper benefits of meditation. And in the long run that's what will be. That's what will be. really wanting more and more of. But I don't think the five minutes if you can scatter those through your day. And give them a good five minutes. I think that's necessarily bad for everyone I I think. There are a lot of people who might start that way. and. If you're doing that, would wholeheartedly, you'll find pretty soon that you want to sit longer than five minutes because you might just be relaxing. And Ready to sit. When the five minutes is up. But if you've if you've committed your schedule to only having five minutes then. Your body's going to be ready to get up even if you're kind of longing to stay. So if you can only do five minutes do that and do as the. Person asking the question mentioned Stu. It may be six times a day. You can do that at work if you took a five minute break every couple of hours and you were able to sit somewhere. But really make your goal to be the thirty minutes because I think that's where the real benefits from our practice will show up in our lives, and the practice practice for herself of moving beyond just the. Surface, but really down into see. What's going on with us in accessing? Accessing deeper. Deeper parts of us. Okay. But that's a great question. What are we doing in the world? He stays at so up in the air. Right into. There's so many questions. I have a an upcoming retreat I'm really feeling. I have really mixed messages about that and. Having have to make a decision today doing it or not, and this one I'm one of the leaders for so it makes a big. It's a big. It's a big decision. And I, know individuals make their own decision about going, but I realized that this is what we're being faced with more and more as things open up. But not very well being opened up. We're in stage four now in the in this part of Illinois. So. We're we have more access to places that were still being. Really encouraged where mask into social distance and we, we see the statistics at all over the world. The numbers are rising again. And we have to make lots of decisions and. Hopefully make the right decision, so that may be a more conservative decision than we'd like to make sometimes. we may not be. There may not be a heavy weight of the majority behind us, but remember we have to. Follow the path. That were laying out for ourselves. We have to be true to what we. Honestly, see going on in the world. And evaluating that. And once in a while. Someone will remind me that you know I'm in that. I'm thinking about other people and then someone. Usually. My daughter will remind me that I'm in I'm old I'm in the high risk area. I'm one of the. Just because of my age. And then they're probably some you know. Some other things that are combined with the age, but just my age puts me into that category of I need to be really

That's fine I can handle it. I loud enemy. So then I started the meditation still dog and come. Distract me and doing things with me. So I can't continue to practice loving kindness meditation. Finally what happens. There's a dog. Sit Down next to me and having a really good nap. then. There is a two cats. Those two gets also worked next to me. And they're playing with my roles. I believe that is the power of the practice. Now, you can see the beauty of your life. How many people see that building? One time increase the league. I was having lunch. It Group of my friends. We are waiting for food. So then I saw next able. Young mother and father do little. Baby may be three years old. They're banding for food. This little girl distracted. Then the restored people. some coloring papers. Now, she's being hollering. Mud is assisting her. I can hear the conversation. Then I figured it out. She was coloring Now this little girl beautiful. She's talking to the mother Mommy I love butterflies. Then mother has why do you like butterflies? Then she said butterflies are so beautiful. They can fly. I. Won't Be Butterfly Flying. I won't fly like a butterfly. How you that story. Then I was thinking I'm listening. This little girl! That's how she expedients her life right now why? She doesn't have that many distraction her life. She's so he'll. He's so honest. Why? He's not distracted in the world. It is so funny. Almost be done eating. The already to leave then group of teenagers. Walk into the restaurant. They are loud. Big Group like maybe ten of them. They are sitting and right to figuring out. I'm really good observer when I see things around me. Then, they are making a joke myth. One goal. Maybe our friends I. Don't know what is going on. Everybody's laughing and loud. Speaking this girl and saying things to her. He is so annoying by that. Expedience. That moment she said I his life. I hid his life. Then in that moment I was thinking. That is how she expedience life. Why she's little bit distracted. So what I'm asking you today. Many as a goal. Like forty years ago when I become a monk. I was a angry monk. So an wing. Making all. Pool. It is so difficult. Some teachers because of my devious. I got lots of punishments. Nobody likes me. But I don't know what to do. One day I was reading Zahn Sanskrit Book. In this book says. If you want to be avoided upper. You know the world bodies other wasn't trying to be a that. He has to practice these qualities. Indofarma temple chanting book, We have my rich. That's why I included that. I know that time. I was really angry middle monk. But when I'm reading that sounds book. I was thinking. This is what I won't be. This is what. My dream. I was like thirteen years old. But I won't be. I don't know how. But dead! Young, egg I planted some seat. Now forty years later. Being among. The rest of my life. I'm asking how many people evicted by my practice. We'll by the whole world. How many people effected by my loving kindness practice? He Ain't the Blue Lotus temple. If I didn't do my loving kindness practice. You are not here today. If I didn't come to woodstock practice. Loving kindness with Jason here. You know so. Those are the people. Was it next to me? Nobody's here. So therefore I'm asking. B.'s my message today. What they were. You don't be today. It is not something simple. Maybe many years later so many comedy to you and learn from. You'll practice from you especially your children. So. This is my new job now. My dream is to build loving kindness army. Now think about all the problems in the world. If. You can build this kind of army in this world. This army. We, are not killing. We are not hurting. We are not insulting. The discounting. That is the weapons we are using. So. They are why I'm asking. You don't underestimate you. Don't only estimate you. You have perfect. Human being born into this world. Now use your inner power to change the world. If you are in that journey, you the Buddha. You can change so many people. Devil. Key planning to this practice. Every day. I'm asking your join. With us to practice. So, he gave me are going to do this meditation mainstay meaning. This summer same place here now still temple is closed. How would we can do this practice and take the message to the world next time when you come, please being more friends. That is the way you can spread this word. I hope you learned something beautiful today now we are going to do. Little chance for you all else. This is the blessing for you. All your children, your family, so many people requested. Blessing from me and from the monks. I can make all the names, but they.

How about we take this idea city to city? This month we are practicing loving kindness here in Woodstock. Maybe next month we can go and practice somewhere in crystal lake. So that means we can bring all the people together. To practice loving kindness, then we can build this power. Do we like that idea? Okay! Let's do it so next month. "So now just nurture yourself to let let you be done with that for this present time. Don't let it hang around with you. Sometimes we call this coming back to neutral raking to say coming back to nurturing yourself and letting the letting letting that the power of that difficulty emotion. You know now now. We're going to stop working with it so you WANNA come back to a safe place and your body. And that's when we take care of ourselves so we send Meta. We send loving. Kindness and friendliness to ourselves may be well. May I feel safe? May I realize I can deal with these difficulty motions? I am strong. I can be fearless and then because it were Brag. That's met a practice. We definitely now need to send it out when we can. We can feel okay. We have enough for ourself. We can send some out and then we can begin to radiate an. We'd it just continues. We never run out and we are never unable to send it out so that we can radiate that feeling of goodwill out out. Send it out to all your loved ones. Send it out to your animal. Friends are big supporters. Send it out to strangers to enemies to the challenging loved ones in your life. Remember that Meta is infinite so once we begin to send it radiated out or radiating out it just becomes who we are and it keeps going and going and going and when it's infant that means we also can't say. I wanted to go to her but not to him. I wanted to go to those people in that. These people we. We don't have that control when we really understand what we're doing we can't pick and choose who we begin to send compassion to and. Meta too and that's wonderful isn't it? We'd all be tempted to to use to use that superpower for evil instead of for good so That's part of being infant. And we're not picking and choosing who we who we send it to and we can't and we can't pick and choose. What their responses so he never have any attachment to a radiating out those qualities like Metha- and compassion and sympathetic joy for others and equanimity. So that's that's enough for today. I was afraid I'd start coughing like I did yesterday so I have a night. I have a glass of water here with me in case Hope you can hope you can Comfortably work with your emotions and recognize that they are not permanent and recognize that. We're the only ones we have to ground ourselves and be with ourselves when it comes right down to it and you know if you have emotional issues that you have to deal with with with With a professional counselor or with medication that you know Speak supervised don't always feel that our practice of meditation that we're at a point in our lives where meditation can can solve every problem or deal with every everything we're working with. Sometimes we need. We need more help. We know that. And if you know that we we I I definitely in the other monks of Blue Lotus. Encourage you to get the help you need but to never have to give up meditation and it can be come along with any professional help you need. Your Meditation will only make everything better so not not suggesting. You quit meditating while you take care of something just know that We have to trust science. We have to trust what we know about the brain. We have to know that there are things that are available for us to use and work with and that's part of what we can become aware of as we practice when things are difficult for us. we need to get help and so never be afraid to get help. Okay you might just need to talk to a good friend a Kalyan Amita or he may need to talk to a doctor or you may need to talk to a counselor so Let that be let that be part of your part of your reality to don't cut off one with the other okay. Let them work together So it's lovely Slavia see names coming up and see people that I'm so happy to see and I'll see you again Sunday morning or you can listen to a recording. Okay have a beautiful day. Thank you so much for helping me in my practice as well. Okay bye bye..

"Good morning it's speaking. We Malala from Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock but I'm at Hallman Crystal Lake and we're having a rainy morning at a lot of rain last night. This is one of those times when I wish we could share all of our wonderful rain with people in California and out in the desert and in all the places around the world We have plenty and I know how how rare that is to be able to say it so It's a rainy day. But it's warming up here so again it's caused to be happy it Sunday today. In case you weren't aware of it so That's usually special day for people to to get outside and we're all working. It's a good day when we can be with our families and catch up with each other and have a more leisurely day and for all of us who are doing still doing stay at home which in Illinois is most of us accept are essential workers. The that's kind of every day now right so I'm curious for most of you. What do you do to make the days different? Do you have? Do you have ways with your family or if you would just yourself. How do you distinguish one day from another? Do you have zoom classes or different groups that you check in with on certain days do you have zoom exercise classes. Just curious how you how you mark each day so we always when I'm talking to friends about well it's Day not sure which day so it's it's It's good to have some routine in our lives right even though the complete different scheduling in a way is a good way to wake up and to see okay. Here's my life now. How is it different from how it was before? And what are the things I like about this? What are the things I like about? Having everybody in school everybody work everything open How does it feel and we might come out of this experience and realize that we can make more choices with our time and there are things that we're seeing that we if we really enjoy it. We've probably been doing it while we're Self quarantining or staying at home so I have a few things that I'm feeling guilty about. I'm I have a beautiful Ukulele that Kim's off gave me and I was so eager to have a Ukulele group because I've seen youtube of the senior Ukulele groups and Madison in different places in England. And how wonderful it is but with all this time and with all of my stay at home since March I haven't been practicing the Ukulele so I'm really having to think about where my priorities are. And if I have all day pretty open pretty much open. Why am I not doing my Ukulele lessons that I can get free on youtube and I can practice so I don't like seeing that that's not a priority but it's good for us to look at things if we if we liked to read? Have we really been reading a lot if we like to study if we if we want to make our practice better are we finding more opportunities to sit and have that quiet time with ourselves? Are we helping others are just look at the thing you're doing and see what's making you happy? And what do you are you easily drawn to? Because it's wonderful to see our lives fall into place so we We can see the things that we really love and the things that we enjoy doing the things that we need to do that exercise and eating healthy food which these days means cooking that healthy food and discovering the things that we can really enjoy doing and the things that nurture us and the things that nurture our loved ones and the people that we you know the bigger world because the longer we practice the bigger our group of loved ones becomes right. It's we love our family. We love our friends that we think of as our family of friends. We love our teachers. We love our Songa we love our stats are spiritual community. But then the more we practice loving kindness the the more we see that love just keeps expanding too so Think about what you do and how it in a in how it allows you to be more loving and nurturing nurturing yourself I loving yourself first and then expanding it out because I heard a or I read an article by Sharon Salzberg. Who's one of my favorite Buddhist teachers? And she was talking. About how so? Many people are really confined in small spaces. They aren't able to get out and walk Which if you live in the suburbs are out in the country or pretty much anywhere except Chicago in Illinois or Wisconsin or the Mid West. You have areas where you can still safely walk and not even run into people so We can take a mask we can be. We can be safe and we can avoid people but she was saying. We have to remember when we're in a confined space where it's were not able to Room to meander walk around or see much of nature that that our practice of loving kindness are working with the four spiritual qualities of loving kindness compassion sympathetic joy and equanimity. Those are all specifically practices that we work with the same way. We do loving kindness. We develop that quality within ourselves and then we radiated out to others and we radiated out to an infant a infinite range so there's no into it. It's complete spacious nece so just practicing loving kindness compassion equanimity and sympathetic toy joy for others and if we practice those qualities and radiate them out a way to feel that spacious newness so if you feel confined or if you're feeling like everybody around me is getting on my nerves. I need some space. Sit down find a little quiet corner few need to and practice loving kindness and allow yourself to radiated out you know go slowly begin with yourself radiated out and then see yourself sending all of that out radiating out from you from all directions out to infinity which means that never stops and see if they can open up a feeling of spacious nece for you and let to get out of that tight feeling that you're too confined or you have cabin fever okay. So we'll try that but you can do that practice anytime you have to go. Sit in your car or sit in a tiny space outside. You can practice that. I'd also like to share something with you today. And this is something. I've used a lot of groups and a lot of people in their practice in. It's great if you're doing walking meditation or if you have your working with emotions that are coming up. Kind of quickly and anger is a good one. This one is worded for anger but we can use it for any kind of difficult emotion. We're feeling if we get irritated at something that we don't have to be calling anger but it might just be anxiety or being stressed out or feeling very nervous or worried or any of your difficult emotions. It's very quick simple way and it's especially wonderful. I think if you're when you're walking so if you're walking or practicing walking meditation so this is something that take on the Vietnamese monk who we all are familiar with. He wrote this. He calls it an anger walking mantra so this could be walking from from your living room to your bathroom or the bedroom or back to the living room you can. You can use this. So it's an anger walking mantra and you might WanNa play again. It's it's It's a sadness walking mantra or it's a fear mantra and you can just shift it so as you're stepping. We know that when we do walking meditation were were were paying attention to the movement of our of our legs and our feet because we don't pay attention to that a lot but we also are still practicing the same breathing but this is beautiful breathing in. I know anger is here breathing out. I know the anger is not me breathing in? I know the anger is unpleasant. Breathing out I know the feeling will pass breathing in. I am calm breathing out. I am strong enough to take care of this anger. So imagine how you can use that if you're fearful if you're worried if you're anxious if you're a nervous if you're sad let's let's do it again together now. We're not walking. But you can do this as you're sitting. So let's let this be a part of our meditation today and I'll I'll read the words out and then if you don't remember them I can put it. I can get it out to you if you let me know. Okay or maybe I can just put it on facebook. And this is from Hong Anger Walking Mantra Plug in anything. You've any emotion you need instead of anger breathing. In I know anger is here breathing out. I know the anger is not me breathing in? I know anger is unpleasant breathing out. I know this feeling will pass breathing in. I am calm breathing out. I am strong enough to take care of the SANGER. So let's it be. You can close your eyes or if you're listening to this in walking in all say it a few times so we'll sit quietly and then I'll come in with an yes. Everybody's asking me to share it. I'll share it. I'll put it on facebook right after I upload this..

"Good morning speak when we mullahs. And it's Friday. Morning may the eighth. It's beautiful and sunny. I'm dividing days of mostly in my head by the rainy day or the sunny day or the cold and Sunny Day The day of the week gets lost. Sometimes I just earlier this morning I love listening to the Chicago public radio station and Especially for their news coverage and they have a BBC news in the morning and today. I didn't realize I know yesterday was V. Sock Day the full Moon Day in June and the sixteenth. This one Blue Lotus. I said the fourteenth yesterday the sixteenth is when Blue Lotus ordinarily would have celebrated that at our temple this year SUPPO- Yesterday and it's still a full moon. Today I think so. Enjoy the full moon and have your own. Is We talked about yesterday? Do Your own internal celebration with your with the people. You're a home with and for yourself personally. We can celebrate it for ourselves. And we're celebrating the birth and the and the Enlightenment and the final enlightenment at his death so we can roll all of our big holidays pretty much into one But today is the seventy fifth anniversary for of the of E. Day after World War. Two the surrender of the Germans in a victory in Europe Day and the BBC had a beautiful short tribute to that and it was very moving and they read a letter of someone describing to her husband who was overseas what it was like an England and how people were Winston Churchill spoke and the king spoke and It was such a beautiful time and for years of course in Europe they were still rationing. They were rebuilding and England had been badly bombed and All the all the European countries had been affected and it it was the end of the war the official end of the war in Europe. The that took a little bit longer other places to reach that final end of the battling day as we know but I was I really immediately was thinking about think of how many years Europe was struggling and in a living through a war and such an such a terrible war just trying to entire populations of people being wiped out. And I thought about this co Quarantine that were under and how hard it is for people to to make it through six weeks of trying to maintain social distancing wearing masks and we know when we listen to the health authorities. We're going to have to be Moving into our new future slowly and gradually and so many things will be changing so I think it would be really inspiring to listen to that feeling from people who had been living with the threat of bombs every night in some areas all day long losing their loved ones every day hearing about losses Hearing hearing about the the atrocities of the war as they were uncovered over the years and economies being shattered and I think I think it's always good to put things in perspective is to look at history and see what we're capable of going through and coming out of it stronger and better and so let's let this be the seventy fifth anniversary for V day. Let it be let it be a reminder to us that we can. We can get through everything we can get through. This and this virus is not. It's it's this is not something to sneeze that. That's not the image to use. This virus that were experiencing is getting us into a lot of Economic Pain and people are having so much difficulty dealing with. I think I think it's time for us to have compassion for ourselves and for others and be more accepting of different people's ways of responding to the to the restrictions they feel in the fear they feel and for our own I read Michael Franz X. Beautiful facebook story about a group he was working with and Tree Lanka recently and The the beauty and the dignity he saw from people who've experienced a lot of poverty in isolation in Being a outcast of their own society in some ways so that would be good. If you can read that. It's a beautiful little piece. But he he makes a statement in that too about. We have to have compassion for ourselves when we judge other people and they will. Their response isn't the way we should be responding. So it's I know that's always something we can work with in our practice and we do it the same way that we send loving kindness to ourselves and radiated out we can send compassion to ourselves and understand that We are is not the way everybody else's and that we have our own fears about this. We have our own pain. We have our own issues we're dealing with and we can have compassion on ourselves and then we can send that out to others and work with our difficult people that way we. We need to all kind of step back and breathe. Which is what we're doing here every day and And see that our brothers and sisters that our planet all over this planet people are going through difficult times when we go through difficult times. We often become difficult. People challenging people It's hard for us to deal with things and to work through our pain. It's not their layers to it and I think we're beginning to see and look a look at and think about all the layers to this the rippling effects that are happening happening very quickly in our society and Family people with children of people living alone people people who are more hermit likened nature and people who are more people wanted in nature in their regular pre cova days. Were all reacting differently and we need to take that into account so be. Be careful about not beginning to judge people in the different ways. They're handling things but at the same time keep your own boundaries and do what you think is right for you and don't let your your fear of other people's decisions caused you to become fearful. We can take care of ourselves. Because we're we know what we need and we know we can find the right people to get our information from and to move forward so let's work with our own. Let's work with compassion towards our own fears and our own worries and our own anxieties. And then let's send out the same compassion for others. We have to keep doing that all the time and also find some things to be joyful about an laugh about an have humor about and find the beauty in every day and every minute and then were then. We'LL BE FINE. Move through this slowly and calmly and that's that will be we'll look back and think maybe we'll find all the proud moments of the way we handle things and decisions. That were made that. We think we know we`ll. It'll be a lot of history written about this period so Right now we're experiencing it so we need to live in the moment and be be able to live beautifully. Through this experience there will be grief and there will be pain. There will be suffering and we need to understand that this Changing world that's the nature of this world so enjoy V. E. Day today and listen to some really heart stirring Memories and speeches in the beautiful things from the ending of the war and I think that will inspire you. It's certainly I. Celebrating The Life Of The Buddha

"Good morning it's May the seventh. I'm pretty sure and Thursday morning and I'm live if you can't see me now hope you can watch me sometime today. It is beautiful here Crystal Lake Illinois so I hope you're having good weather where you are. Today is very special day. Today is the day that is recognized all over the Buddhists world while this season is but different cultures have different days for their official date. May the seventh today. This year is the official Visa Day. Bassac means It's it's we call it Buddha Day an English and it's the celebration the biggest celebration in the Buddhist world but it's a celebration of a Buddha's birth his enlightenment and then his final enlightenment when he dies so we're really celebrating the life of the Buddha and we've rolled all those those important dates together to basically have a beautiful celebration. That's a reminder to us of a great our great teacher and The things that he led a path for us to experience so what he did in what he achieved and what he experienced we also to experience for ourselves so having a a path finder The Buddha was for us is is is beautiful. Things of the Soviet sock is a beautiful celebration so for Buddha Day and the entr Lanka that is the this year may seventh. Is that official day so our teachers at Blue Lotus Four. Four of us are Four of the teachers. The monks are from Sri Lanka. And I'm the Western representative on the Western monastic. So it's a very. It's a beautiful day and this year is the first time that we haven't been able to celebrate it and So we're asking everyone to celebrate it to celebrate it in your home in your heart and it's a wonderful time to a- to offer Donna and if you don't have monastics nearby you can offer Donna to your community so you can offer your generosity to the community You can think of the different ways while you're still of staying safe that you can reach out to others and just share sheer the delight of the day. Share your your feelings. For what a Special Day. It is make cookies for someone. When we have the celebration and in Woodstock the those of you who have been there and those of you who help every single year. No it's we have lots of food that everyone brings and the other temples who visit US Vietnamese Buddhist temples in Chicago who are like a like a brother and sister temples for us. And they're in the Maya tradition and they celebrate with us and we celebrate BASSAC with them. They bring wonderful food and they bring the monastics and they bring The answers they open they open our altar with a beautiful dance and present flowers and we have dragon dancers and we have Indian dancers and be a wonderful short talks and chanting with our local chanting group of life. People and It's then we have a parade through around the square and downtown Woodstock and then everyone comes back to the temple and we have refreshed months and fellowship and It it's A. It's a wonderful day. We get way we get hundreds of people at this event so this year and we cram it all into one day because culture in Buddhist countries. It's usually about a week long. It's a it's a big week long celebration with festivals all over and food and it's all about giving so it's definitely not something we do to raise money. It's something that we do to offer to the entire community and so it's a very special and it's springtime so we always remember. The Buddha was born outdoors and he became enlightened outdoors under a tree. He was born under a tree. He became enlightened and then his death was out in nature and in there in the wilderness. Really outside a really small village under the shade of a Tree. And so it's beautiful to celebrate in the springtime. This this wonderful celebration of important times in the life of the Buddha

"Good Morning Good morning at central time. This is speak when he we mullah from Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock Illinois. And I'm here to ask you to join me to do another. Meditation will spend about thirty minutes together. If you can remember these are recorded too so you can. You can bought US listen to them any time. That's good for you today. I'd really like us to think about our breathing. That something that until recently until the time of this virus we probably haven't had to think about very much and now we're recognizing Not only the importance of it but Everything that we're doing all over the world to help keep people breathing whom we think about her day to day. Lives were often so busy in so consumed with everything consumed and consuming everything around us that We use expressions. Like I didn't have a minute to breathe or I'll sit down and breathe later when I have time or we're always breathing so let's work today together on just being able to relax and stay with our breath and really exploring our body that way and sometimes if we can stay with our breath. We're actually going to be letting more rice up for us to look at to see so it can be emotional especially these days. Sometimes a four tight with our breath. We're not breathing deeply and calmly wherein stand pushing things away so if we can really be with our breath be still and the calm and stay with our breath. Lots of things may rise up so if don't be surprised or uncomfortable if something painful or sad rices up. That's that's that's not bad and we can handle it. It's in our body somewhere so let's be more aware of what's this. What's here just this morning? I heard about the death of the mother of two dear friends of mine and And I know how difficult it is for them right now and I think when we feel in this experience where all going through around the world were feeling things for all living beings everyone were connected to and our connections with every other living being or becoming more and more real to us every day. There's no separation so there will be sadness and there will be pain and there will be suffering and the best thing we can do when we're in the midst of that is to sit with our breath and let our hearts open up. So let's do that now so gently. Close Your eyes and if you can breath in and out through your nose.
