"And maybe that's why. The blue jays made the decision they did on opening day. But anyways let's turn now to the defense first before we get to the offense. Because the defense i think a lot of is this weekend. It was really impressive. The blue jays half to do the small things better right. They do have big problems in the pitching staff. They have fixed problems in the offense. But if they want to get to that next level the next step that they can do within this season with acquisitions is limiting walks on the pitching staff but also improving the defense. Doing the small things right. it's not vladi ranging over to get around ball when no one's gonna be covering. I doing the small things to improve on the defense. I think we saw that in this series plotting for one. You mentioned bryson him doing the splits in yesterday's game. He was very very impressive on the field. I think we liked that a lot. We saw a lot of impeccable. Plays up the middle and even after corners. With bijou and i mentioned guerrero. We saw simeon range deep into the hole and save run on opening day. We saw the and make a couple amazing turns. We saw an incredible double play. Bijou of course in the ninth inning of opening day coming in throwing home getting my talk men coming home. Which again don't understand why he was running at all but still it was defense at saved the runs for the blue jays and in the case of opening day won the game for the blue jays. So i guess. Does this surprise you at all. Is it just encouraging. Are we reading too much into it. Isn't maybe just the way. The ball was being hit in the infield off the yankees bats. Or is this something that we're gonna see more consistently and how encouraged by at argue. I don't think that it's surprising. Because i kind of expected their defense to get better and when you look at last season it was not very good..

"Let me take you to another one yesterday yankees and bluejays on a chilly day. The opener a yankee stadium. And here's the highlights from this one. Bottom of two one. On for gary sanchez and gary. Sanchez has left the ballpark sanchez. The first yankee catcher to homer on opening day in eleven years jens have a two one league garrett cole now doing the pitching and not well oscar hernandez oh no doubt about that drills one the left in the six that ties the game two and garett cold not pleased bottom nine. Same score winning. Run it second. Aaron judge of the plate. Can he be the hero on opening day. That's the question. The answer is no judge. One for five struck out twice. We're going to extras top of the ten runners. At second randall. Grischuk pool rightfielder. Aaron judge can't get it no. We can't sixty five percent was the hit probability on this. It's an rbi double. The run comes around to score and that would be the difference. Blue jays win it three two in extras on opening day. And so back to you jessica mendoza. What's your number one takeaway from the ball game yesterday in the bronx gary sanchez. I mean you've got to remember a lot of people. Were watching last year gary sanchez. You didn't think he was eating a start or be in this lineup for the yankees. Because how bad help awesome. He was offensively last year. Being one forty seven six four strikeouts tech eight teen walks. His biggest thing coming in was to be able to sit back behind the baseball. That home run. You could use feel the pressure. Come off of him. Why because there's so many other guys in this lineup. That when they struggle. It's up to gary sanchez. And he's the difference maker to me because you know when it comes down to aaron judge who also struggled with this game carlos stanton both of those guys are prone to injuries. They're not going to be in this lineup throughout the entire season and to the big piece. That's missing because by the way it is world series or bust for the yankees team. Gary sanchez has to step up. I know it's only one game but that run was huge

Birding with Dr Meredith Williams

"Berta. Volt from more than one. Hundred and fifty million years ago and then explosively diversified culminating in more than ten thousand species distributed worldwide. Today are human. Relationship to beds is complex to seen as spirit messengers of the gods and at the same time. We took the wild red jungle fowl. From india and selectively bred into domesticated chickens the now farmed in cages feathers have been used for thousands of years and indigenous headpieces and at the same time but has like parrots and parakeets a kept as pets bird poop called guana was used as the first fertilize of modern agriculture. And charles darwin study of galapagos finches was to the formulation of evolution. Buds are all around us. We are closer to bed than any other wild animals birds. I literally and figuratively are canaries in the coal mine. Their wellbeing is our wellbeing threats to buds range from habitat loss including logging climate change industrial farming with pesticides invasive species and even cats. These will had a devastating impact on the bird populations of the us and canada. Which in just the last fifty years have declined by. Three billion birds danton insane. Thirty percent of all birds gone. Three billion pez of wings have vanished ever across our continent from sea to shining sea. Luckily birds have strong allies in their corner. There an estimated sixty million active bird watches in the us alone and with the pandemic shutting down so much of our country. We have flocking to bird watching like never before everything from bird feeders. To binoculars have been in short supply and this year the birding app e bird collected more sightings in a single day the was admitted during the first two and a half years of the apps existence. I must admit coming late to the bird-watching pardee. But thanks to dr meredith williams. That's about to change. I'm lucky enough to work with meredith every day in her role. Running one of the most important and complex agencies in california governor. The department of toxic substance control. Dr williams received two undergraduate degree from yale and a doctorate in physics from north carolina. State university meredith then worked and silicon valley fortune. Five hundred companies in the technology consumer product and chemical sectors meredith left the private sector to follow her passion for wetlands and birds and led the san francisco estuary institute as we'll hear. Meredith journey is about so much more than her resume. Meredith nine meet apt get ready for my maiden watching invention merit so we're about to go hopefully bed watching what. What do we need to bring with us while like what. What's what's in the bird watching backpack almost nothing. Which is great binoculars. Of course are your starting point. So i hope you have some inaugurals. I know you were looking for some recently. You gave me some good advice. But i get any but we all kind of professional but what just like you would have an extra pair. Do thought so. It's in the office but we could stop on the way out of town. Not of that sound. No we should. We should yeah. You just kind of out now. Okay okay so you got the binoculars. How do you if you're starting out. It's surprising how good have gotten very affordable these days so i mean it's still a lot to invest but ask a bird watcher. They might have an extra pair. That's the first place you might wanna try like them. What do you well. first of. All there are lots of different kinds of birdwatchers in terms of some people. Want to count every burden get really long list. And they track every single birthday they see. It's about the numbers of the that very unique bird and they chase vagrant birds that fly in unusually and they're rushing off to see that bird so there those kind of bird watchers I'm a bird watcher. Just watch one bird for a long time. I liked bird behavior. just i'm just fascinated by them. And i think they're beautiful so i could just end up watching one bird for for quite a while you can just take it. In at whatever level you want in terms of the variety birds that you could see and how you would just experience them and enjoy them. So and i think the only way to find that out is to bert. Watch a little and see what grabs you What you do sounds really peaceful. The first thing that sounds the first thing sounds more. Like in england as a whole breed of people go train spotters and i always kind of identified them with bird watchers. Like it's really about. How many things. You've you've been able to capture and less about the bird the thing that you'll doing just sounds like being a peaceful will watching another animal even the people who are energized. That way unless they're doing a big day which would be a day when they map it out to see as many birds as they can. In a single day they're not necessarily rushing around even they are going to have moments of really enjoying a bird and even somebody like me chased around golden gate park looking for a rare warbler. That's very rarely in san francisco. There's an amiability amongst birdwatchers is really camaraderie. People are so nice. There's always somebody better in terms of being a better bird watcher. Meaning they either can identify birds better or you know they just have a lot of experience for the a little bit about. The ecology and people are so happy to share their information. That it's really wonderful. That's one of the things i like about it. And it tends to be every now and then you get into group and there'll be somebody who's a little loud but by and large the the folks are really kind of it's easy to get in a groove with with birdwatchers and settled and gopher along stroll and see some great birds. But what's there everywhere that it's a it's a big i mean like it huge movement and it's growing apparently it's one of the fastest growing outdoor activities. There is it's it is just kind of crazy places where i been going for ten years and cues to be just me and five or six friends maybe and now parking lot and i think the pandemic has made it even more so where a lot of people. That's how they wanna get outdoors or they've they've just kind of discovering it because they know it is one of the only ways to be outdoors so i think it's going to continue to grow which i think is great because then more people are connected to the natural world which obviously makes them care about it more. How did you get into meredith like what. What was your journey into bed watching. I mean i liked birds always in the yard growing up in ohio. You know the robbins and the blue jays. There was a hill in town. And i used to ride my bike up in the hill early in the morning and i would always see birdwatchers and i said when i'm old air quotes. I'm going to bird watch. And i kind of that seed was planted but i didn't really bird-watching until my three say in my thirties. I started volunteering for the san francisco. Bay national wildlife refuges. That you know are on the perimeter of the bay. You know them well getting restored a lot of them Back to title harsh. And i when i volunteered i would be doing everything from pulling out. Invasive plants to building shells but there are always birds around and i just became more and more and more fascinated with the birds invested in binoculars and just started creeping in. You join the audubon society and suddenly you're getting news about different outings and the next thing you know you're you're pretty far in foreign now. I'm foreign. I'm not pretty far and have taken a couple bird vacations. Which i think says that. I'm pretty far in. But what do those entail. The longest trip i took was to go to brazil to the pantanal. Which is a very large wetland like the mecca of bud watching their many mecca. It is a mecca over the course of two weeks. We just went out every morning. We get up before sunrise. Be moving by six o'clock at the latest. Usually more like five thirty and we went to a place that's called the parrot crater a giant sinkhole. And it's all a lot of parents live down in the sinkhole. And so you look down. A new parrots lying around in a simple it was tremendous and we ended up seen two hundred different species of birds there along with some giant giant eaters river otter is and it was quite a trip but the birds were spectacular.

"That's what i want out of any any any. Follow up on that on that gift you do you know. I would love to have springer on this team. I think that when you have that at outfield position filled. And you have that sort of depth in your system that having to give up any player personnel. You're just giving up at that point just money. I think it's a must for the blue jays at this point right. We're we're talking about trade ships and what we're going to have to give up and how we're going to have to fill the void in comparison to just signing. Someone a sounds easy enough but again you're right yet to convince that player to want to come into fifty fifty marriage at that point I'm for it man. Sign me up. And if it i think last week we settled on seventy eight years. He thirty one. You were talking about an eight year contract. It's a lot for me. It assuming the blues have the goal a little high on the on the term. It's a lot for me having a player until thirty nine. Forty but if you're playing for if you're paying rather for three or four years of a leap production as the costume businessman and that's a future adam. Problems future bluejays problem. I don't care that someone else's problem sounds like tried to lewinsky trade s future guy. Guys man. I don't care polit up all up. What are your thoughts. The want that as christmas gift i will have no issues with that as christmas gift. Unfortunately as much as like i said i have one gripe on the content of what happened in the past with george springer in the team that blew slapped mentioning name the he tracks too. Many boxes for the blue jays makes too much sets there assist. He plays smeller defensively satterfield. We the center fielder we need. Somebody hit the middle of the or it. There's as many things and like when you can literally to solve this solving it with money and we have money. It shouldn't be a problem. is literally just. They had to convince him to like you. Set play buffalo nick. Although the bills went ring maybe play and later a little bit. What in all reality. I do think the bluejays are actually going to get a chance to play. Some games drought this year regardless of what starts the season would-be where i live bovis. Yeah i wouldn't be the first. Half of the season. For the all star break is on the road then reevaluate where the vaccine is at and how many people have been vaccinated. And maybe you play in toronto. The second half after the all star break another toddlers was realistic. That that can be banned stands by that point too but adam second gift Want back in just. "You know, maybe even arguably the 2016 rotation. You know, that would I think be really really good. Obviously, I didn't mention a fifth starter because you know, that could be literally anybody from the pub open as of last year as of this season going into next season, but I'm not against that I think you know the it's it's kind of funny that Trevor Bauer The or mentioned the the Drone Scandal I definitely had a good laugh at that when I was younger, but I mean not not a lot that he got hurt. But the fact that you you know who's playing errands and there was so many memes about it, but it was funny. Yeah. It was a really funny dad. Especially especially the game where he was his finger the bloody finger. It's slow dripping blood and yet the Blue Jays and when he wasn't he wasn't injured as long as he was okay, he was but it was it was pretty fun. It was he didn't finish the start but I would like to see him know that would be that would be a good acquisition for the blue cheese is, you know, like you said they need pitching. He's a pitcher who happens to be very good at that. So I mean if is it realistic, I mean judging by the fact that month Mark Shapiro said he that they have the money and they're they're willing to spend it. I think from a blue jays perspective. I think that that making the effort is realistic wage it's just depending on this Trevor Bauer want to come to the Blue Jays and The fact that a lot of the league is now recognizing the Blue Jays as a really good team or one that has a very good future. Who knows maybe he says you know what this is a good team count me in for the next 3 or 4 years. Let's let's talk series. I think that definitely could be realistic. I mean one of the kind of not deterrence but one of the elephants in the room is the fact that the Blue Jays are in Canada and I've heard over the past, you know, five six years of watching essentially every single game is you know, when they talk about free agents, you know, do does a guy want to come to a completely new country, you know going maybe from us..

"blue jays" Discussed on Section 138

"So whether the Blue Jays can play in Toronto, whether they have to play somewhere else whether they displace another major league team or minor league team or whether they share a stadium with another major league team. Like we saw them planning to do at the start of this season, everything is up in the air and I think there was a lot of speculation and we have a lot of speculation as to why the Blue Jays are cutting ties with the Vancouver Canadians personally. I think it's just the fact that you know, you have to get rid of teams right now in the time when the restructuring Minor League Baseball, but you know, some people are throwing out ideas that he brought because of the border that it would complicate how Vancouver would fit into the larger minor league system. Whether teams would then have to travel north of the border which of course right now is a big problem song. There was some people saying that they would rather the Blue Jays cut ties with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats or double-a team and then make the Vancouver Canadians. They're double a team or move, you know, even the Dunedin Blue Jays single a Dunedin Blue Jays up to double-a moved to Vancouver Canadians up to single-a. There's lots of people playing, you know, a jigsaw puzzle with all different parts of the Blue Jays system personally. I take some offense to the idea of cutting the Fisher Cats cuz I'm from New Hampshire and I like them they have a beautiful Stadium. But yeah, it's it's a good situation. Obviously, it's not good. But I I just don't know whether you can do anything about it. It's it's a situation that seems kind of locked in stone. I don't think the Blue Jays took change it much. Yeah, you have to imagine to like for a team like the James who don't know what's going to happen next year like you have to imagine for someone like Ross Atkins remarks your power if you're trying to recruit a free agent like yeah, how do you log? Free agent and telling them like hey, we want you to pitch here, but we don't know where we're playing next year. But the one thing I want to say too with the the Border issues. I'm sure you guys saw the news is that and this could be a game-changer for all the sports page. All all leagues are a guest other than the NFL but Calgary's testing a rapid testing like device or something like that at their airport where you can get results within 5 minutes and apparently if it works the government is going to consider eliminating the 14-day quarantine Rule and if that happens you have to imagine maybe that leads to the Casual reopening of the border. So if that if that would happen, I believe it's going to be tested within the next couple of weeks of November, you know, that's a major game-changer for sports.

Blue Jays face Rays as underdogs in wild card playoff series

"Playoffs start tomorrow maybe even today even yesterday as you're listening to this, we're going to go. I mean ordinarily take quite a bit of time and Karen previewing each series. But we don't have that kind of time because there are eight playoff series and they are best of three which is going to lend itself to all kinds of chaos and so we're GonNa go through each of these series intern. We're going to turn hit the high notes and then at the very end deliver, our world series picks So let's start with the top series in the American league the Tampa Bay rays versus the Toronto Slash Buffalo Bluejays. The first bullet point I have in my notes here is with because the Toronto Blue Jays with with Vladimir Guerrero junior and hundred. View. A Hundred Kirk. This is a wide team and I love and as much as as high as I am on the radio. I'm very excited. See the Blue Jays in the playoffs this help them or hurt them here I think dot you've seen all hundred kirk hit I. Think how can you? How can you say anything other than than the with helps them yeah. I like the idea that maybe Vlad as just gonNA break out suddenly in the playoffs because he's looked really good the last couple of weeks or so and it would. Be Wonderful if he just figured out how to hit the ball in the air and really had a great October and it'd be really fun if Nate Pearson came back from injury and turned into a bullpen weapon this month but I just personally don't see a great case for the Jays over the race I think they're both good teams. I. Think The an exciting team with a bright future but the race are really good and I think beyond review who is not even starting game one for the Jays I just don't have A. Lot of faith in most of that trump rotation or bullpen frankly and other than the game restarts it seems to me that Tampa Bay has the pitching edge both in the bullpen and the rotation and offensively maybe it's a wash, but it just seems to me that the the pitching edge is firmly in Tampa Bay side. So I think the Toronto Bullpen and this is going to be the kind of thing that gets said right before they give up nine runs in the seventh inning eight-game one I think it's better than baby. You think maybe they get given credit for I could see a path with this pitching because what they what they're going to try to do apparently is is bullpen game it with a match shoemaker taking up a little bit of load on the front of the maybe we get Pearson in the end of game one we haven't seen blake Snell pitched that deep in games in the postseason in the past, and then game too. I think you could make an argument that we use the best pitcher in the series. So if that happens. If. The blue, Jays do need to shoot the moon but I could see how they get it how they get it done with that said, this raise team just has so much depth in the lineup. There are good defensively they have so many pitchers not just the scary. Snell Morton tile glass now types just the I mean we saw this in the unfortunately in the for for me in the last weekend of the of the regular season where they shut down the phillies like even down to bespectacled Wade Miley who was lights out in the last game of the season yeah. The razor they've just got too much pitching I. Think as much as funny. It would be to see the the Blue Jays fight I think the the rates are going to take this one pretty handling.

"Today Dave talking about the legend of all a hundred kirk man that was fun to watch last night. Our. Listeners if you haven't seen the highlights pause this podcast call up the Blue Jays highlights from last night in to see something like you've never seen before it's. If, you can imagine a shorter maybe larger Pablo Sandoval plan catcher and going four for four and hitting home runs. I mean unbelievable. He's listed five eight to sixty five physically reminds me we you know you're trying to come up with the copper there were Sandoval Mike. was maybe being older Benjie Molina not young. But Older Benjie Molina and you could see the way runs. He's not ever going to be the Swiss guy. But part of the reason why I mean forget the you know the size and the shape. See Guy he's a right handed hitter. You do not see hitters in two, thousand, twenty hit the ball to right field away. He does that was I think. It's were to right field right including the home. Look. It's a he's a remarkable story for starters what he's only twenty one yet. Yes. Played above class say he can hit the bat looks legit. He walked more than he struck out in the minors last year and yeah, the Blue Jays have gotten dope production from their catchers this year. So can he play in the play offs I dunno buster yes. I mean you know who knows when we actually get there but you know when we reach this time of year teams, they don't really care what's in the back your baseball card they they don't really care when you were drafted or you know how much money they paid you. They only WANNA know if you're getting results, this is someone signed in two thousand sixteen out of Tijuana Mexico. The Secret History of the Korean Bat Flip

"Icl Insane power right now. I don't know how I feel about this. Meantime, is a senior writer for ESPN and NFL analyst on NFL live and yeah, the former host of this podcast. I am the captain. Now you will feel how I want you to feel I think is how this works. People can't see this, but Kabul was doing the thing where he points his fingers at his eyes and then he's pointing them at my eyes and it's very upsetting. So. How did the story which I love so much actually come about what was I think the spring early summer of twenty sixteen, which is important because we are coming off of the two thousand, fifteen mlb playoffs where as I'm sure you will remember Joey Batista flipped his bat which feels almost like I'm understanding what he did after an home run in the Al. Ds. I was between the Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers, and there were much hand wringing and commentary and debate as a result of that critics called the BAP slip disrespectful not only to the opposing pitcher button. The game in general were a player. I wouldn't do that. The fact of the matter is what he did did not offend you just don't sit there and flip your bad especially in the seventh inning but throughout this time, and before that, there were these videos of backflips coming from Korea right where. Korean baseball players were flipping their bats as defiantly as Batista and with great joy and style and panache, and these videos had gone viral in social media. Turk. Looking, looking into it a little bit. There's a there was an account on twitter website called Mike Abo run by a Korean American guy named Dan Kurtz, and so he was sending them out and then they go viral. Asked him kind of how he got into it? He used to live in Korea he was huge. Fan Korean based organization. But then I asked him. Okay. So why why are they? So Common Korea is this normal there why our guys not getting drilled in the head and he didn't know and I was super intrigued by that. So I got in touch with another Korean baseball expert, a commentator for the Daniel Kim who is based in Korea, and he had so many great stories about backflips and what they meant there in how they were so common but he also didn't know why or where it started and he told me you should just come here and figure it out. So that's what I did. So, you actually go to Korea and this I. Remember I, remember it sounding like one of the great expense report boondoggles ever. But you actually go to Korea with Mickey and your story begins in in Bussan right and so what do you actually find when you travel across the ocean and get there So we went to Poussin, which is a extremely large seaside city on the southern tip of South Korea. So they have a very popular team, the low tech giants, and the first thing we do is we go to a game at stadium and. It was revelatory.

I think this is a great opportunity for fans to get involved and to express their their love for not just the Blue Jays. But if you love this podcast, you can participate it'd be it'd be an honor to have your artwork be our main podcast logo Craig came up with this idea. All credit goes to you I think it's a great one and any way that we can incorporate our fans. And fans of the Blue Jays would be. Absolutely welcome and I hope that we get some some awesome submissions. I'm sure we will. Get creative guys. It's cool with us. Whatever you want to do but my only thing I would suggest is don't use any official logo. Don't use the official Blue Jay logo we will get flagged and we won't be able to use that on aggie podcasts. Yours they just won't accept it because well, it's copy written so fun loving thing that. Share, our Cheeky Shenanigans ballroom type chat here you'll probably have some extra points. Yeah? Yeah. "Well, even winner team was crap in two thousand seventeen twenty eighteen last year too. So Hey, five five like I'd be fine with three out of ten maybe four would be awesome. But I think it's like the raise is split a series of the raise your ecstatic 'cause he split five out five or five to ten with the anti-israel. Thrill very, very four illusory. All junior to smashing Yankee pitching. Yeah. Yeah that's true. So you look at. The state of the standings right now our biggest competition is Boston Boston. Baltimore. We are in agreement that even though numerically they're only half a game behind Baltimore we don't see Detroit making a push right we don't. We don't see them making too much noise right Agree. I don't think the Tigers Tiger's are still building and I think they're treating it that way with the call up by in school bar. What is there? Other pro last name whatever his name is they're treating it like, hey, we can develop but if we can walk into a playoff spot, that's the all the better so Same thing with Seattle there. Obviously sellers right now they're not going to get there. So barring any moves are our biggest competition for a playoffs by is Baltimore take a look at the Baltimore Orioles schedule. It's a little bit as daunting as ours. Right? So we got us for the next three not including tonight. Then they got the mets to then they got the. Yankees to then the mets again. Then the Yankees again the braves then the raise the raise again and then the red sox and then the Blue Jays again right and they still have to make up that game the. Yeah they gotta make up that raise game from last night rate so I'd much rather have a double header against the red sox in the raise. You know what I'm saying. So that could be two losses Ray in a day for the Orioles. So their schedule is pretty much mirror to ours in terms of difficulty but I do give the Blue Jays an advantage because I don't know they've been performing well, it seems to be clicking and I just can't see the orioles maintaining the sense of I. Don't know push or whatever you WANNA call it towards a postseason talk yeah..

"So if you guys want to throw him out, maybe I considered the top of my dome, but he's going to be a free agent and twenty twenty four. So you have control for as long as review or a little bit longer we'll be on this team. That's a real plus when Pearson gets healthy, you have that already that's pretty good. I. Think if you're going to ask the prospects for Cleveland's pitchers, just throw everything at chamber. Okay Yeah more or you know they're down on xactly sack and he was looking pretty damn good that we've had a police. TORONTO. So there you go out. And maybe the price won't be so high and. I honestly with the Cleveland Connection, they wouldn't shock me that those conversations are taking place just because a know that farm system in I. Know It's been a few years but still allows guys they're they're Cleveland's they had something to do with. So many drafts Johnson's then true. Yeah. Now you're out wrong and you know just want to touch on the red sox again i. absolutely still think that there's GonNa be some trade of veterans off the Red Sox roster the only untouchable in my mind on the Red Sox and three guys right now Denver's. Pogue Arts and Vertigo just because they got him or David Price McKee back beyond that if you get really crazy. JD MARTINEZ ANYBODY I Heavy contract. But I can see jd Martinez being moved or Andrew Benintendi because I think they're growing very frustrated Benintendi and Benintendi still have control I. Know He's been absolute crap this year but I mean I know the outfield that we thought was going to be a point that needed addressing looking damn good right now for the Blue Jays with brick Banou Randall Grischuk and the Oscar and Lord escorial. Hell at Andrew Benintendi before it's outfielder at rotated there from time to time. So I think the red sox could be pillaged, and if you're not the only other area I would add is the bullpen. You can never have enough bullpen help and you're in the playoffs. Then I know our full of staff who knows what the rosters will be. COMPLA- off time. Looking some royals and in Kennedy would be a nice armed add at the back end of the bullpen. He's got starter stuff wasn't damn good starter for a little while and either pretty damn good reliever too. So I'm going to be looking up royals for Kennedy as well. novelist. Lists. He wasn't Anthopoulos trump. Speaking of the Royal Trump Rosenthal Zeman frigging most talked about guys in major, League baseball trades so far. So maybe everybody's overlooking Kennedy. Maybe Brennan you are right. We don't get an arm the starting rotation and is a nice way to solidify the actual rotation by freeing up a spot. For K. or whoever to come out of the bullpen and going to the rotation, and it's still have that same level of talent and they're the same Louis Ambulatory Hawkins..

"The Blue Jays will still get that game, and if that is something that you were concerned with me, I didn't really think about it I didn't really care but I did think it was worth noting because I did hear it on the broadcast but all right, let's without anything to do last night because like. Baseball and it's like, ok. Guess what you guys said I thought about all this stuff and thought how I personally better myself. Yes exactly why can I bring to the table and? I will find a way. Yes. I agree and I and I think that that goes for all of us to write. We're not look I have my fault. We all have our own faults on the dumbest Guy in the Shatt right here. So what do I know but when it comes to when it comes to these issues, this is something that my wife and I have been paying particularly close to this is something that we are trying to be as active as possible as best as we can, and that is the difficulty of this because how do we do it properly ray Effectively, how do we go about approaching this issue to make an impact and I'm not talking grand impact like an Impact I don't have that sort of impact I. Don't have that sort of. Influence on people maybe I don't know. But what I'm saying is, what can I do with my small little voice? To make an impact that's what's important. If very small voices do this simultaneously no become a wave and that the point. So. Good on you guys I'm glad we're able to talk about it. But we'll talk some bluejays. Trade deadline trade deadline coming and like we just said at the top of the show, we are very excited to talk possibly Blue Jays baseball and it's looking more and more likely as every game goes on. Now the Blue Jays have made two trades already both to the mariners less notably they have acquired Dan Vogel back for the mayor's in exchange for cash considerations I had pretty much an off year and it's kind of redundant when you think of the rowdy to as position they're they're almost sort of the same player except rowdies raking right now. It's a power bat off the bench uncle but more importantly and more recently, they traded for Taiwan Walker and exchange for cast considerations or that player to be named. Later, this guy always gets traded it's crazy player to be named..

"I'll be your host, my name's at Corsair joined by my fellow Co, of course, as always Mr Craig Board and Mr Brennan Pentecost. What's up guys? Doing. Good Buddy how doing I'm excited I'm excited to share. Fifteen, boys. All a little bit of postseason baseball in the mix here even though we have about a month away but. You know there's a whole lot to break down. There's a whole lot of postseason talk to break down. There's a whole lot of trade deadline talked to break down. But it should be noted first of all that we are recording this. Friday evening eight, twenty eight that is August the twenty eighth for those that are listening on the podcast. Edition I guess you could say this show and not the streep There is currently lie bluejays baseball going on right now with the Jays hosting the Orioles, their nemesis for this year as it seems. That being said, the Jays are pretty much sitting pretty right now on the eighth spot of the American league with a record of fifteen in fourteen. If I'm not mistaken, they haven't been below five hundred since August the nineteenth. So they're they're in pretty good shape when it comes to that things are looking good when it comes to the team itself but I should note to start the show the state of sports in general. Is In an a pretty much an unfortunate, yet familiar space. So I kind of want to start with this. We can spend as much time as you guys want when it comes to this, but I think it's worth mentioning we've touched on this before and history has terrible of repeating itself and this time to a much larger degree with racism still being prevalent in our society. Unfortunately, the sports world is taking action with players and teams boycotting pretty much or protesting their respective games, the Jays notwithstanding on Thursday evening, the Jays, and the Red Sox game was pretty much boycotted to raise awareness for racial injustice specifically. Spawned on the acts committed to Mr Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by by policeman Brennan. Start with you how do you think the team responded to this I know the red sox sort of took the ball initially in the bluejays followed. What are your thoughts also should be noted that today is MLB celebration of Jackie. Robinson days usually held in April but today given the shortened season. This is celebrating it that was a word salad for me you can take it over. Now, very good way to start it off out of MRS discussion that everybody should have especially with three of us who are Caucasian male over the age of twenty eight.

"Started to become less of an ideal plan B., and then we saw another plan emerged where the Blue Jays could potentially play in Buffalo. Buffalo is where the Blue Jays have their AAA affiliate the Bison. The problem with that is. Is that it's a minor league ballpark. The facilities are really not up to the standards that MLB players would be used to, and also of particular concern is that it's not a very large facility when you're talking about clubhouses, weight rooms even dugouts all that kind of stuff. And you know that's inconvenient, but it's also potentially dangerous.

"Athlete. It stays with you. So Caitlin the NBA major league soccer and the NWF saw all decided to return to play by putting their teams in one location but Major League baseball took the opposite approach. It's having teams play home games. How did the League arrive at that decision not to play essentially in a bubble? Yeah, I think early on. We saw one example where teams would gather in Arizona and Florida, the site of a bunch of spring training facilities, but that plan really didn't take off much among a myriad of positive proposals under consideration to spring training sites in Florida. Arizona with completely rely divisions and no fans cactus league winner plays a grapefruit league winner in a dome and November. them concern was tied to players might not be on board with that. It would have been maybe three plus months away from families, so it just really never took off very far. And because the bubble idea never off the one Canadian team r.i.p Expos the Toronto Blue Jays. We're going to have to cross the US Canada border constantly during the season, and clearly that posed a problem. Yes, so essentially, the US Canadian border is closed off to non essential travel right now, so people can enter the country affair, essential workers, but if you are entering the country, the expectation is that you are supposed to quarantine for fourteen days and the border services are staying on top of people. They're calling people that come into the country. They'll do house visits to make sure that people are staying where they're supposed to be stained so. I'm taking it very seriously Canadians. Who refused to follow the rules? After coming home or coming to this country could get a visit from the Mounties, and those who disobey could face fines of up to seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and up to six months in prison, and yet despite those concerns, the Blue Jays tried to get permission to play Home Games in Toronto Anyway. What kind of efforts to the? The organization go through to try and get a special exemption. There was a lot of lobbying on the part of bluejays wanted this to happen. The preference all along with to play in Toronto is their home ballpark. There's a competitive advantage just because the players are used to the Rogers Centre. This is where all their stuff is or weight room. They know everything. There also was a lot of talk from. From the players point of view about the competitive advantage that they would have just been in Canada the situation with covid nineteen is a little bit better in Canada than it is in the United States right now. There's less cases occurring every day in Toronto. If they were playing in Toronto they would have been pretty much the safest team in MLB because they would not have been exiting the only time. Time. They would be was when they're traveling. We'll the Canadian government ultimately denied the Blue Jays requests. What did the federal government say in its response over the weekend Canadian? Immigration Minister Marco Mendocino released a statement, and essentially what it boiled down to the Canadian government was uncomfortable with the cross-border travel required for mobile return to play the fact that the regular season proposal would require a lot of crossword travel. The advice that we got was that there were serious risks that remained therefore. We concluded that there was not a principle based on which the issue national interest exemption he reiterated that Canada has done a lot of work to flatten the curve, and it's taken a lot of pride in how we've been able to manage the virus here and Canadians have made a lot of sacrifices and they just on the advice of health experts. They decided to say they would not allow to play in Canada. Look I. Get it I'm a lifelong Jay Stan we're not taking decisions fans, we're taking decisions on the basis of evidence and the advice receive to protect the health and safety of all Canadians and what's been the public response to that decision in Canada. General public opinion was they didn't want the bluejays here you know, and it's interesting dynamic because Canadians and Tronto Onians are blue Jays fans, and there's a lot of pride in that. Bluejays routinely talk about themselves as Canada's team and they're. They're happy that they represent a nation the only team that can say they do that, and so it was interesting to see that public opinion here was that they really didn't think the risk was worth it as much as they love the Blue Jays. They didn't really want to open up our country to any sort of risks. What about the players? How did Blue Jays players respond to the government's ruling? After the Canadian government came down the Blue Jays. Players were really disappointed I they were all really reasonable in their responses. Definitely respect. The decision made by the Canadian government. We're still disappointing because we were all looking forward to playing in Toronto. But totally understand. The global pandemic going on. It will probably take some adjusting to. Get to know a new ballpark, but I think the blue. Jays will be relieved just to have some certainty because that's another thing that they've been dealing with fervently longtime. While the Blue Jays won't be allowed to play. Home Games in Toronto, the NHL will be hosting home games in Canada. Can you briefly explain how the NHL Playoffs are going to work? Yeah, so the NHL is operating there to hub cities in Canada. One will be in Toronto, and one will be in Edmonton, and the NHL is calling it kind of like a secure zone and I think that secure zone includes the hotels and the arenas and restaurants. Players can also go to, but. But essentially players will come into Canada this weekend. Players will start arriving. They'll enter the bubble and they really can't leave that bubble and because NHL players are not leaving that bubble. There's no travel involved the only time the leave. The BABAS for good because our team's been knocked out, Canada is just a comfortable with that situation will so this really is a health decision right from the Canadian government's perspective. This isn't about Canada showing favouritism of hockey over baseball or is it? I. Mean I think that people have differing opinions? I think the Canadian government would say yes. It's a public health decision. And ultimately like I said they just felt uncomfortable with the travel that was involved in 'em obeys plan you know optically could look like favoritism, and it does make you wonder why why they were more willing to make it work for.

"Do you like pat toddler over Buck Martinez or pat toddler and Schulman or beard on any going on there where I wish they would just bring in some new blood best soleman as the color as sorry the commentator and buck as the color because that's a punctured. The guy the point where he's starting to go a little bit. I think yeah. I think he's got to go. See your ago okay. I almost made the trivia question of who who famously broke their leg. Tearing a double player was a triple play. I can't remember. The ball is thrown around home plate. And then you know after that the still guns guy out at third base after he got trucked breaks his Shin or something role. Zank see you stumping myself. A trivia them randomly asking in the midst of this no wrong with that question number eleven follows. Who was the first Blue Jay to steal fifty bases at a season demoss? Oh Garcia Onus Nixon Shannon Stewart Dave Collins or Raji Davis. If you like Raja Davis is one of those players that had like a tremendous amount of earned success after leaving like home. Run Game Seven. And we're GONNA win Razi crazy crazy clutch about. I'm just jumping around the room because I was just like. Oh my God. What is going on right here. I know period racy so but yeah as far as that. Kinda fun goes one of these guys stole fifty bases many times as career and one of them was many times is a blue Jay. Dick move she. I think I got it but I honestly a lot of these have been gases all these flat of all right like I said I couldn't make it too easy. I know. Well it's good some of these I. I'M NOT GONNA lie a lot of these. I didn't know I had educated guesses like I'm sure you guys are going toward and you know I. That's the per per being the hostess week or Trivia to me the Horner of all the information. Hey look guys oh. I love that hat. Voices has of those in I guess we're going to have the hook atom up. It's so nice. We're still seldom. I think they're actually discounted right now on the. Oh then I must buy there. You go absolutely. Here's discount it on all the minor leagues sites right. Now I've almost went abroad. Go nuts blue are not sites Shirts on their site really awesome aright which Blue Jays pitcher owns the single season record for wins at twenty two roger. Clemens Jack Morris Pat Hankins right holiday or days. The trend with these pitcher question. A lot of guys couldn't make it too easy. Go basically look at our career war for pitchers for single season even collectively right. Those five guys that are on every list and that was on vladi night. I think it was up to Sarah and met my someone's rocking a raptor. Sure right behind you Brennan. Oh Yeah Right. They may have been playing that night. Or maybe the very beginning of the here with Yeah it's a moral conundrum about the game with me. But you're like a and you can come up and I just remember. We went to bar in goofed around afterwards and Saas highlights released. I think that's what I remember. Yes a trend with our terrible slowdowns but apart that logo. Yeah I figured I'd rocked some of the old stuff there in this show off where we came from. That was my to start a public cash or anything. Yes I'd hand doodle this so to give you an idea if I can do this shit. You guys should be able to do a little something. I'm a terrible drawer. So no no no drawings no badge jewelry during well. That's what maybe just stick the sick. The marker in your kids you know indicted around a little bit. What happens so question number thirteen? This player has the highest single season war in Blue Jays history. Who is it Josh Donaldson Jose Bautista Roger Clemens Gianola rude or Devan White? I think it's Kinda crazy. That Josh Donaldson Accumulated Enough War. And the two three years that he actually was on. This list was pretty damn dominant. Was that mind you? This is single season to not collective right. We're almost there feeling hung over shock last by a it was a fun night. That was when I actually brought. My family. Had A bunch of Yankee fans and mets fans. Oddly enough with me during one random holiday weekend and that was me and my after the fact after you know the the inevitable sweep that happened because it was unfortunately guys. It was twenty seven when that happened. All I wouldn't God give me everything. Good Adler for free down at like three seconds. I am kind of upset that you can't see the shock on all in the back of it because that's what I did. Do it shot and I kept drinking. I just saw speaking I. This is the picture I sent to my wife that night and I was like this is my feeling so anyway. I won the gold glove every year from nineteen ninety one through nineteen ninety five and made one of the greatest catches in Blue Jays history. Who Am I Roberto? "I don't think they'll stick him in the minors because I think another team will want to acquire him. I think he'll be useful for another team is just where the ages are right now. They're situation the fact that he strikes out so much it just the way it's working out doesn't seem like he's going to stick around with the. Blue Jays unfortunately great guy. I with all these players that you know. We say horrible things about how they're playing but it's really something that you know. You wish the best for them off the field It's just you gotTa to put the best product on the field So we'll move on now to some of the questions we got from you guys and our first question comes from. Aj he asked Aj Am nate. Excuse me he asked how long Until the Blue Jays are contending team. How long until we see them you know pushing for a championship and I think you know I was just talking about the the stages rebuild. I think they're just past the middle of the rebuild right now. I'd say the middle of the rebuild was the trade deadline or the start of this season and over the off season. They'll start shifting their gaze towards the next stage which is acquiring players. That are gonNA stick around for a long time that are going to be helping the Blues Compete and that means I think in two thousand twenty. They're not GONNA do much. They might be a few games below five hundred But I don't think they're GONNA compete be competing at all next season But twenty twenty one. I think that's the time when we'll see the blue jays looking towards a wildcard spot. I think they'll fall short in twenty twenty one honestly. I don't think they'll be able to pull it off that soon. But in twenty twenty two. I think that's the year that we'll see them. Dead in the heat of a wild card race or or Division Championship in the alias. Store or something of that kind. And that's what that's why I'm really excited for. Its three years down the road but I'm still excited that you're definitely right there. Those days of the you know the dark times during the rebel against the whole rebuild as a dark time. But you know those days of seeing on her Solarte's no offense to him hitting cleanup for team everyday Those days of You know those days are over and the only way the contract from this point as anybody would seem would be upwards after all the youngsters that we finally see again. I've I've said it countless times. Their new core of in the batting lineup and again. Those famous names are Vladimir Guerrero Junior boba shut Kevin Bijou Laura's Gurriel and so on and so on and I think with those players they're they still have quite a lot of developing to do at the major league level We know we know Vlad's slump or I should say you know his underperformance in his first few months of the season and we know how much he's picked it up since the all-star break which is obviously a great sign boba sheds just been tearing it up since he's been called up you know. He recently had to home. Runs off Clayton Kershaw. Which is good to see Kevin Bijou as well. He seems to be developing at a slower pace but he still has a lot of potential and and and like we said that lurks correal seems to be just a you know a new player after finding a comfortable position to play and with all of this happening and also the the other big factor would be When the start buying and I think that will determine when they were going to be competitive Ross Atkinson said countless times that once they are ready to spend money. Rodgers will provide it for them. I guess which I don't know how much anybody would believe just because of the reputation in the city but I guess it's something to look you know kind of be relieved about just because the curiosity and the speculation of Rogers would give the bluejays money to spend and I think that the Jays will maybe make some more. I think they'll with the winters continued to go on. I think they'll be more active in the free agent pool but I just think they're still gonna. There's going to be a couple years of them starting to contend before they're actually our. I should say buying before. They're actually gonNA start contending and I still think I like you said I don't know if I see them going anywhere in twenty twenty Like I said the five hundred like you said sorry. The five hundred seems to be inappropriate like an appropriate. I should say level expectations for them. Ross Atkins did say after the Trade. I think he compared the the Blue Jays rebuilt the two thousand fourteen. Houston Astros so I think you know looking back of that The Houston Astros weren't very good. That in two thousand fourteen but the next year I believe. They made a wildcard spot or they completely trended upward. So it's you know it's obviously hard to PR- It's hard to believe that's actually going to happen especially with him. But you can't blame him for being excited with all the talent the Blue Jays. How but they're definitely ways away I think twenty two twenty twenty one even seems to be a bit of stretch. You're definitely GONNA have to look within another like two three four years Max before they're gonNA start contending but the other big factor within this is all the prospects of bluejays have loaded up on and all the prospects they still have come in a big target or a big. You know the player in the spotlight. Now in the the Minor League system here Pearson. Who looks absolutely incredible and he was actually just recently promoted a AAA buffalo. He threw seven scoreless innings or through seven strong innings account. Remember at a phenomenal. I start so he sees definitely going to be coming up within the next year definitely unlikely he comes up this year but hopefully sometime next year and I think as he's Katina to come up you know they're still going to be trending upwards but we just don't know how long and with the rest of the depth bluejays have it all depends on how they turn out an example could be the marcus. Stroman trade with Anthony K and Simeon Woods. Richardson prospects like that. Where you don't know if this is really gonNA work out until you know five years down the road and I think if you know there's obviously going to be a lot of prospects that hit with the Blue Jays and there's going to be a ton that mess and I think it's a matter of time before we determined how they do and how they cruised. That'll have a big impact on where to go and the other good thing is the. Jays could have the pieces to buy with all the all the prospects they do have but it's a matter of time when when they decide to do it and when Rogers provides them the money which will be when the Blue Jays are ready to contend. But it's another two three four years Max down the road in my opinion. Hopefully were wrong hopefully next year. Hopefully they sprays all of us. I do want to mention you were talking about prospects and Nape Piercing Pearson. Just you know blowing everyone away in his first AAA game but I also want to mention TJ Zoellick because he threw a no hitter interpolate with the Buffalo Bisons. Um and that's just really something that you know. He was a first round pick by the Blue Jays a few years ago. I think it was twenty sixteen in the. We haven't heard a lot about him. You know we've been hearing about like you said a Pearson was drafted last year. We are at about Sean Reid Foley. We've heard about these other guys but we haven't heard a lot about TJ Zoellick but this is really used first moment in the sun. And I think it's a sign that you know he could be something big to Coming up in the minors such really exciting Speaking of people coming up in the minors we got another question about someone who just came up. Vodka Grow Junior. We got two questions kind of related. The first question was from tie he asked. Will Vladi have health issues his whole career and then the second question from Charles is will Vladi be a bust Those two questions lot implied in them I will say Ties question. I don't think that he has a lot of Health Issues Matthau. He has had obviously injury with his knee. But this year he's been largely. Ok Injury wise and I do see his injuries. Getting a little bit more serious. As time progresses just because of when you get older your more injuries. But I don't think I think the way that the Blue Jays have been stressing His you know the way he could get an injury the way that they've been stressing in trying to condition him Everywhere along the way you know single double triple A. Even the majors now. Everyone's so focused on that fact and keeping healthy that I trust staff to not make a mistake in that regard. I think he will be healthy for most of his career. I think he couldn't count her troubles leader in his career. Just because of the way he's built But the second question will be a bust. The question pie implies that he's already been a bus so far and I think that he hasn't he. He has an exceeded expectations because autumn. When we were talking about him coming up we were talking about. You know he's going to be a hall of Famer. He's even better than his father. And you know. He hasn't been that good but I'd say he's met expectations in ninety six games. He has a two eighty two batting average. Three fifty six on base percentage and fifteen home runs fifty five. I think he's making it clear case to be Al Rookie of the year. And that's the entire season those stats. That doesn't include his recent uptick in the last few months after a few starting slow months. So no I don't think he's going to be bust. I don't think he is a bust this season and I think you know he'll stay healthy for years to come. Yeah no grow. Junior will not be a bust. That's ridiculous question. In my opinion all due respect to ever asked it. He's not a bus now. He's played ninety six career games. First of all I know it's it. Seems like he's been up for a while but he hasn't even played a full season with the Blue Jays. And you know yes. It's okay to be disappointed. I guess a lot of people were a little letdown of how he first performed once he was. I called up and I think you know after the All star break He's been on fire and like you said his numbers are up and for the rest of the season. He's projected it in his last twenty games. major league. Baseball's protect projecting him to head just below three hundred and with an opium of eight seventy one with final enough. Sorry five more home runs and seventy more every is and you know gene's got a long way to go before you even consider him being a bus. He's got to be really really bad throughout those years. He hasn't even finished a full season yet. And I think it's completely ridiculous. Even think of him as a bust sure he's underperformed but again these prospects as much as they're not..

"To the right side and wind up playing first and second, right? The the thing about Vlad in particular. He's got a really strong arm. So I if you can keep them on the infield, and he's non liability than I think the Blue Jays would prefer to keep them there. You know, he's a bit of a bigger bodied third basement to put it lightly. So many around the game of question whether he has the durability to play at the hot corner and probably down the line any he shifts over to to first base. But yeah, just the fact that he's got such a solid arm. I I think you keep them there. And as far as his future. Yeah. I've had some people ask me whether the Blue Jays should just kind of try and buy out a few of his arbitration years right now, just you know, sign sign a giant contract before even hits the major leagues and from a front office perspective. Of course, you want to do that. Because you want to lock them in by those Arbor's save yourself a little bit of money down the line them from the players perspective. I mean, this guy is I looked at his fan grass projections and he's projected that have like a five win season next year as a rookie, which is I think it was like the fifteenth best. He's projected at the fifteenth best position player season in two thousand nineteen which was around like Aaron judge territory as a rookie. And that's also accounting into the fact that he might not get he probably going to get called up until mid April. So it's just like I'm still trying to wrap my head around. All these. Things. I think if he isn't a superstar at it. It's gonna feel like a disappointment in Toronto..

"Replacement level season but does he leave avoid in any other way obviously he was sort of the public international face of the team but was he important clubhouse presence as well i think he was i mean to the extent that i can tell you things i got the sense that he was very certainly very well respected by his peers including guys like marcus stroman he's close with and many many other players of the team i think that when you look at the teesta 's legacy it's like it's it's incredible legacy and tronto he did so many things the backflip alone is is statue worthy and even beyond that you have home run titles postseason appearances and you just have this incredible incredible run of production but like you said last year he was so unproductive that i really think it was time for the blue jays to move on from him and find someone who can actually produce more so i don't think that he's going to be missed in any kind of concrete way in twenty eighteen because the guys he was closest with bill still hang out with them they'll still tax them they can still lean on him not quite to the same extent of course but he still does have those relationships and that kind of extends beyond the toronto blue jays to people as individuals but yeah there's no question that you know there's gonna come time hopefully when a lot of blue bluejays fans were in attendance when the blue jays can really recognize what he's meant to this franchise all right you listen to the podcast you know how these things end give us the two thousand eighteen win total for the toronto blue jays i you're right all ready have my answering advanced eighty four win eighty four i think is not too crazy high i think it reflects that they have the depths behind the roster that you see on it'll the charts if you just look at that group twenty five players i think that there is some talent that's gonna make its way through the system i'm not talking gravel or shut but i think there's enough there that they can be competitive and in that mix for awhile card by the way the blue.

"Contract is impending free agency going to be a storyline throughout the season is at one of those cases where the player just says okay that's it we had our chance to talk about an extension but now the season started and that's over or is there some chance that something could potentially be you worked out during the season and would there be interest in resigning him or would he just have to give way to flat junior or the next wave of bucci as players there was this really bizarre events relatively early spring training this year where donaldson told the media that essentially he was going to move past all extension talks publicly and from his standpoint he was expecting to hit free agency because he had tried to discuss that with the blue jays and it just ultimately haven't gotten to the point that they felt they were close enough that it was worth continuing on and then the next day ross atkins gm came out and said that he was still optima that they would get an extension done and then it was just something they hadn't done yet they they were still hopeful getting done to me unless josh donaldson wants to find and believes that their close you're not in that area where you can really have a serious discussion about it so my expectation is that he's gonna play probably put up five or six win season and then hit free agency and probably signed with another team so just as smoke last season was going thank rafts numbers he was worth three point four wins above replacement which sent his career total to three point seven wins above replacement justice i was putting together a table not investigating smoke specifically but i'm pretty sure when i looked at it the other day just the smoke just did between twenty sixteen in two thousand seventeen i think he had the biggest ever year to year drop in straight for a hitter does also notable so i know that the blue jays were laugh at a little bit when they kept smoke around before his breakout and now he's going into.
