A highlight from LGM Podcast: Pennant Races Wind Down
"Well, let's go. Here you have your money. You want... $10 ,000? Yes, the services, hamburgers, salads, pasta, lamb, and when you buy a house, you're suspended from your car, and you have work to do. And that's all you need to do to have a DUI. Well, and what do you want? A propane? Don't pay the price of your money, you can't sell it. Don't pay the price of your money, you can't sell it. Also, all of the marketing possibilities with your home team. Hello, and welcome to the Lawyers, Guns, and Money podcast. This is Eric Loomis, and I'm here with Rob Farley and Scott Lemieux to discuss the general state of sports right now, particularly baseball, probably a little bit of football. Gentlemen, how are you all doing? Very well. There's also an obscure politically relevant hockey topic I could bring up too. We could always talk hockey around here, which might be more of a monologue for you, but hey, that's... Hockey and racism. That's the game on ice. But it's been a lot since we talked about sports here. Right now, it's August 30th is when we're recording this, and baseball is reaching its pennant races, or playoff races I guess is more appropriate these days. They're very interesting this year. Particularly, I think we should start with the official or unofficial perhaps team of LGM, which is our Seattle Mariners. So, what a run for the Mariners, and I was wondering what thoughts you guys had about what's going on here and maybe talk about the ALS generally. Well, as Eric and I, I don't know how many times I had this conversation earlier this summer, I was just brimming with confidence about the Mariners, particularly that offense. Every time Dylan Moore came up in a big spot, it was just great. No, I was... I was kind of on the fence. I know on our major league preview, Dave was pretty optimistic, and then I think the rest of us were like, consciously optimistic, but perhaps a little more skeptical, and I think I might have been the most skeptical. And then really for the first half of the year, the team was actually worse than even I had anticipated. Good pitching, but just really desultory offense. Particularly with Julio being a little off, and there's not just much else going on. The Mariners having their annual second base disaster, the curse of Sean Figgins, showing up in Colton Wong. What was his final slashline? It was genuinely horrific. Yeah, like I just... And one thing to see, Jesse Winkers also on his way out of the league. You know, so it ended up being kind of a wash no trade, but boy what a disaster it was. I mean, it was not a bad move. I mean, yeah, so he had a 241 on base, 227 slugging. And one year ago, he slugged 430, and the year before that, 447. I don't know what it is that happens when the something about the Mariners and second base are not mixed. And Adam Frazier was awful for us last year, has been a perfectly competent member of the Orioles this year. So I don't know what's going on there. But anyway, and it's weird that the team almost turned around when they released Wong, not saying he was the only problem there. But you know, and what's interesting is that the pitching staff has been excellent all year. And I think that the Mariners rotation has been top three in ERA all season. And I believe they're now first in the majors in the ERA. I may be wrong, but it's close, if not so. Really, really strong rotation led by Castillo. Scott's surveys always has good bowl pens. And one thing is that they were able to use their annual pump and dump, sort of creating a closure out of Paul Siewald and trading that for a couple of useful depth pieces that they really needed, even though they've had a little bit of problem in the back end. So yeah, it's surprising, obviously led by Rodriguez. But obviously, it's been really encouraging how they've played over the last couple of months. And it would be nice if they could win the series against the A's as the rubber match is ongoing as they speak. But yeah, it's been pretty exciting over the last month. And I'm looking forward to going back to the park. I mean, it's interesting. I think that when they traded Siewald, it was sort of like, well, what really is Dominic Canzone and Josh Rojas? I mean, they seem like a couple of marginal players and they actually played pretty well, both of them in Seattle. But I mean, it seemed like what they did ultimately was just give him, give service a lot more platoon options and a lot more mix and match stuff that he's been using at the back end of the lineup so that if it makes sense to go more or Matt Ford or Caballero, then that's fine. But Cade Marlowe has been a pretty good call up. And then Canzone and Rojas, I mean, that's a lot of options, each of which is functional to slightly more than functional in the right circumstance against the right pitchers. And I think that makes a lot of sense. And then, you know, Telenik will get, you know, should be back here for whatever that's going to really be given that he was, after that good start with sort of sliding back into his usual suckiness as the season went on. But they should have a lot of options in September. So I think it'll be, you know, I like the way the team sort of made moves mid -year to change its construction, even though, as you say, is Munoz really a reliable closer? Well, it's been a couple of times where it doesn't seem to such so. But, you know, but you certainly have to like where the team is in a three -way tie for the West with cratering a Rangers team and an Astros team that, of course, is going to remain competitive, but has its own flaws. Yeah, I mean, this is this is such a remarkably interesting division, right? I mean, and, you know, one of these teams is not going to go to the playoffs, right? I mean, we're operating in the assumption we're going to have a division winner. We're going to have, you know, one of the teams is probably going to be the wild card, but one of them is not going to go to the playoffs. Well, no, no, because there's three wild card teams now. Is it three wild card teams now? Yeah, so Toronto, I mean, you know, somebody's going to be out, but it could be, it could be the Blue Jays. Oh, okay. You see, I was this was a rules update that I was unaware of. But, yeah, the season ended today. Seattle, Texas, and Houston would all be in and the Blue Jays are actually three and a half games behind the Astros. So that's they're actually have work to do. Yeah, that's that's actually quite interesting in terms of the National League as well. But I think the more critical point about this particular division is that, you know, you have you have one of the worst rosters in the history of baseball in this division. And I would I would hazard that the Oakland A's are not the biggest train wreck in this division, right? I mean, I think that the the Angels, you know, are having one of these catastrophic seasons that even though they're not going to end up the worst team in this division because of the A's, you know, this is this is a sort of great train wreck of a team in terms of its wasted potential, catastrophic its complete use of two of the biggest stars, two of the most talented players, not just in Major League Baseball, but in baseball around the world.

Alejandro Kirk and Kevin bijou scored an inning later who tripled the lead to 6 two. Visual added two hits. "AP's sports and Mike Reeves, it was a frantic finish at the Indianapolis 500, our Tom McKay reports. Josef Newgarden used a one lap shootout to grab the lead from 2022 champ Marcus Ericsson to win the Indy 500. You know, I wasn't looking to take anyone else out of the race, but I was going to put my car on the line to win. And I was either going to win the race or I was going to end up in the wall. Newgarden driving for team owner Roger Penske survived a chaotic final 40 miles, which saw the race stop three times for Rex. Major League Baseball the rays win a wild one over the Dodgers in Tampa Bay, correspondent Steve Carney provides the details. The Yankees used a 7 run third inning to defeat the Padres ten to 7, Aaron judge and Harrison Bader hit home runs to support winning pitcher Garrett Cole, who is now 6 and zero. This was a good team win today for sure. I mean, being able to kind of subdue them through the middle innings and keep the momentum. I thought played in our favor, but it's just such a luxury to have the offense. Mcclanahan allowed just a single run in 7 innings of work to improve to 8 zero on the year. My only motive, I think anybody in here can attest that is did we win? I think that's what we had to do. I mean, you don't want to come out in these situations and sit back and go into the summer wondering why. In the NBA, the Phoenix Suns fired Monty Williams on Saturday two years after reaching the NBA Finals in a year after he was the overwhelming choice as the coach of the year. I have to be honest with you. And just gets the first two outs of an inning single single bang bang bang lead surrendered two days in a row, by the way. We said they didn't hold a lead in this entire four game series. They didn't. It's true. They never had a lead. But the first two games completely non competitive, just no chance didn't do anything. Nothing worthwhile. Next two games, booth, Boone puts a three spot on the board in the third game. Does he does that himself? That game ends up not close. And it was, at one time, a three three game with all the momentum in the Yankees corner. Joy Rodriguez came out after that and with the side basically, you know, throw it away. Yesterday again, to nothing, Nestor great start, the starting pitching is almost never the problem with this team. Seriously, literally almost never. Every day, 6 innings two runs, 7 ins three runs. This is the New York Yankees. That is good enough to win for most teams in baseball. For this one, that should be just fine. These are not the aces. This is Nestor Cortez junior. 6 innings two runs against the Toronto Blue Jays at the band box that is Yankee Stadium is fine. Leaves the game, Rizzo ties it with a tour on her again, the momentum has turned. You win that game. It's two and a half game lead over Toronto with an easy schedule coming up. That's not so bad. It's not great. It's not so bad. They were at a safe enough place entering this series. All they really had to do was beat Toronto once. All they really had to do. Honestly, you want to beat them three times. You want to get them out of here. You want them to go away, but all you really had to do was be the ones maintain that two and a half game lead. Keep pace with the Red Sox. And if they'd won one of the games they'd still be ahead of the Red Sox, by the way, now they're not. They're basically those two teams are even in the lost column. For everybody who said I was being too alarmist when I said the Yankees to watch after the Blue Jays and they were about to get swept, if they didn't clean their act up, there's a sweep without a lead held. Didn't hold a lead in four games. Haven't done that since 1908 in a four game series at home. 1908, long time ago. Haven't done that since 1908. That's how bad this Yankee team currently is. I got alarmist twice this year. I said the Yankees were about to get swept in a four game set by the Red Sox at Fenway after Chad green, blue, the first game, they vastly outplay the Red Sox in that four game set and still lost three out of four because of Red Sox BS magic. That's what happens at Fenway. Then I said the Yankees had to watch out for a sweep here and they got swept. So in games where I predicted the Yankees would go zero and 8, they were combined one in 7. Dunk on me, I guess? One win out of 8 is good? Great, one and 7. I said, oh, it ain't one in 7. Thomas Karen, welcome to the podcast. The cushion is gone. The season is not over, but when you lose Jonathan Lewis, I got Garrett Cole briefly and James and tayo in a couple day span and your offense can't hit might be a problem. Yeah, it doesn't help the morale. But even so, I think something is still wrong with this with this Clubhouse or just the organization. I don't know. I don't know. What are you talking about? What could be the problem here? I'm not surprised. I don't care. I mean, I do care because it sucks, but I'm not shocked. I'm not like, I can sleep. I don't have to worry about anything. Nothing spooking me anymore. We watched this happen for the first four, four plus months of the season. And now it's happening again. And there's no reason to think that a 13 game win streak would have cured all, especially when they were they were pressing all the right buttons and getting lucky. That's part of the game. That's what happens at times. 1908, man. Teddy Roosevelt was president World War I didn't even start yet. The whole moose party, America was polarized. Between the democratic Republicans and the bull loose party..

"You hope that george springer is the lineup for that game as well. So fingers are crossed for his status. And maybe this weekend again. You see him play so let's see And two other factors In relation to he him coming back and being the d. h. The number one factor is vladimir guerrero. Junior which is of course a lesser less of a big deal as the hunter kirk playing time. Because is going to be in the lineup. No matter what but it means down the stretch as we've seen the wear and tear of a season on him although he's hot right now hit home. Run forty forty forty one and forty two in this series. He's going to be honest fee all the time. George springer is back in d aging so. That's one factor that plays into this and other factor is boba. Boba shit wasn't hot before he was as cold iraq when it comes to what he was doing in the number four spot in the lineup. But now he's been bumped up to number one and over the last few days he's hot. He's had really good days yesterday. I think he was three five. That's what the blue jays need and without boba shut being hot. You don't really have a true leadoff hitter. Yeah you can put mark assuming up there. But i think the reason siemian staying at two right now is because he's found so much comfort and success at that point in the lineup in the blue jays like him there without boba shut being hot. You don't have a true leadoff hitter. So you need george springer up there you can't be rolling corey dickerson. In games like these as a leadoff hitter. That's just bizarre. It's off the wall idea. I don't know why the blue thought about it in the first place or why they considered it at all but you can't be rolling out corey dickerson. In the leadoff spot. So that's another reason to you. Know maybe push the brakes a little bit on george springer because boba shot right now. Ken carry the team is a leadoff hitter. He can find success leadoff hitter and helped the blue jays there. You don't need george springer in that spot to have success at the top of the lineup..

"Talk about robbie ray and marcus simeon. Because both of these players are guys at the blue jays should be trying to extend or at least be talking about resigning. Once it gets into free agency and we saw this week we had finally our first bit of news about the extension attempt spy the toronto blue jays they have already attempted to extend marcus simeon. They plan to approach robbie ray in the offseason about resigning him to a long term contract. This is reported by ken. Rosenthal of the athletic. And like i said who's kind of the first bit of news we've heard about extensions because obviously like for months. Now everyone's been bantering about how much these guys deserve. And whether the blue jays will be willing to fork over the money or whether they explore their options free agency but seems like the blue jays are serious. Getting these guys back or at least right. Now they're entertaining the possibility we've already talked about how much money it'll take to get these guys back. I think the expectation from all of us for robbie ray was guy said five one twenty five for his deal Both you guys were in the same ballpark. Five remember correctly. I don't think we talked about marcus. Simeon how much hill command in a free agency deal though so or an extension obviously if it comes to that Personally i look at the model of dj lemay. Hughes contract lasts offseason. It's kind of a general idea of what we can expect. Margaret siemian command. This offseason or like. I said if he gets an extension and lemay hugh got. I think it was five six years ninety million dollars and he was kind of looking for more of the long term. He was looking for getting towards one hundred million dollars instead of taking a shorter term higher average annual value deal. I think we won't see the same thing with marcus. Simeon but marcus simeon is a more valuable player so i think five years one hundred million five years one hundred ten million around there maybe even higher given what we saw the blue jays gifted george springer what it took to get him to come north of the border if the blue jays are signing someone like siemian high-profile guy like that and they're trying to ask him to shift over to second base permanently having it's going to take a little bit more to entice him north of the border but i think that's kind of the ballpark number range. We're looking at a hundred million hundred ten million. Maybe he gets up at one. Twenty one twenty five somewhere around there for margaret simeon. Where do you got. Where do you guys think the The contract wound up. Yeah i'm an akl you. I think that he's probably gonna command at least twenty five million season and he's making eighteen this year. I don't know exactly what the qualifying offer is. But it's probably around that it's usually been around the high teens. He's probably gonna command. I think at least twenty five million a season and you know he is getting a little bit older..

"They actually ended up trading for stephen matt's right before the spring and a lotta people weren't happy they that's the that's the truth. And they wanted to taiwan walker to come back. They wanted them to sign this guy. Sign this guy jayco to rizzi and they managed to get stephen mats and so far. Steve matt's his cousin and he's pretty much shut up blue jays fans who were hitting on the pitching. So i think that's a safe way to put it and it's good because you want that to happen and you want him to be a key part of this team and if robbery figures it out. That's a pretty solid one-two-three in terms of performance. So far with stephen matt's continuing to pitch while you have pearson on his way back as well there is potential for this rotation to be better than what people think. How sustainable is it from stephen. Matt's nobody really knows. I assume a drop off market went over. It probably gonna happen but it can still be a solid pitcher in this rotation and just going back to what you said at the beginning. That stephen match should have pitched the entire game. You one hundred percent should have. I was rooting for a complete game. Kind you know. Seven innings complete game. It have been the blue jays. First complete game since may eighteenth. I think it was twenty. Nineteen which doesn't really count either because it was a rained out game after five innings blue jays pitcher only pitched four innings ryan firemen or something. It was a name. I completely event. I remember yeah. Yeah i completely forgot. He ever pitched for the blue jays. I looked out the last complete game last complete game the blue jays had and i totally blanked could not remember who this guy was so anyways just a little bit there but yes he should have pitched a complete game because it's a double header the bluejays relying on their bullpen. In game. two. Eight tommy. Malone's not gonna be in the bullpen. Because he's starting that and then game. Two they bring out anthony castro ryan brockie trent thornton joe pants basically five guys if you include malone coming out of the bullpen and putting a huge stress on the bullpen for today's game when you look and.

"Came out game two six innings one. Run against the angels which we know. They have a potent lineup. He was in the game that the blue jays one fifteen to one and then Against kansas city royals another five one win for the blue jays. six innings one run to ox. Five strikeouts eighty two pitches to do that. Compared to ninety pitches which what he needed for six innings. That outing before so absolutely impeccable. From stephen matt's If robbie ray is who he was today for the rest of the season at least the blue jays have stephen matt's in there. Of course matt's is gonna regress to i. I would say. Low bid above league average are my expectations for him. Now i'm not thinking that these two starts are the rest of his season for him. I think he's gonna regress to the mean but the very least the blue jays have one guy in there who appeared to be absolutely impeccable along with hyon-jin review. Yeah he's been a very very pleasant surprise and he pitched eighteen and a third inning so a little bit more than two full games. I think we can. Maybe get a bit of an idea for what he's able to do. At least in the early parts of the season a one forty-seven era eight and a zero point. Eight to whip so he's been really good and also eighteen strikeouts so about a strikeout parenting and the blue jays have one every time. He's pitched same thing. I believe with rio so rian. Mats have been absolutely fantastic for the blue jays but focusing on nights. I think i was very very nervous to welcome him to the starting rotation of i hoped he did well. But saying you know we didn't get a tie walker in the in the off season. We're getting stephen. Matt's i was like okay. Well we're going to need to see something out of him and so far what we've seen is a is a fantastic pitcher and i think you put it perfectly mark if robbie ray is struggling or is not the robbie ray. We expected or that we saw spring training. At least stephen matches their to kind of take away a bit of the damage and especially with the rotation. That's just absolutely destroyed with injuries. He's been a bright spot Funny thing little tidbit just to end this. I think the blue jays. This won't ever happen. Perhaps the blue jays go with four lefties in a five man rotation they take you..

"Saying okay. The bullpen is totally fine yet. Because i think he needs again. Unsustainable small sample size. Especially when you look at the fact that all these guys are injured. There's going to be increased workload on the guys at the back of the bullpen. They're going to get worn down. They're going to falter at some point so on either end of the spectrum whether good or bad not reading too much into it. I think if we're talking about. I know these past few weeks i've just been saying like pump. The brakes it's okay. It's okay don't panic. I think if we get to the point of the start of may which i guess the timeline now is tasker hernandez by then he doesn't. He's not showing any kovic symptoms right. Now george springer fingers crossed back by the start of. May if you're looking at that sort of situation hernandez and springer are back then. I think you have to start reading more into what's going on with the offense. The offense isn't clicking at that point. Like not even next week when we record but two weeks after that in two weeks time if the offense is in clicking starting to be concerned but right now it's still the early goings. You still have guys like vladimir guerrero junior having really one bad day which he did. Today he didn't get a hit. He's still jacob. I still think he has his on base streak intact looking at baseball reference game logs. He has had either a hit or a walk in every game. This season I think it's shed who lost his hitting streak but even that grow with one bad day he had one bad day. His batting average now is already below three hundred from what it was before like four thirteen or fourteen twenty. So there's a big difference there. And i were still in. The early goings panic. Two weeks from now is a point. Where i'm going to start reading more into these samples that were getting That's where i stand on the blue jays offensive issues right now. frustration watch. But it's going to come with time..

"I think it's a little bit of a stretch to be concerned about it. However if it continues over the next couple of weeks it depends on the severity of it. If i personally would take something away from it but You know the the thing with baseball is it's completely It's just hard to predict because tomorrow they can come out and put up ten runs. It's very easy for that. Or they can go perfect with runners in scoring position and then the pitching give up or whatever so baseball like that is funny because it's hard to predict it could be a different result every game but in terms of team who's supposed to be built offensively. I won't take too much away from it. Obviously there is a few opportunities that they had especially the saturday game jacob. It was a little bit frustrating for sure it was just because they did have opportunities and they couldn't quite tied the game up late and they only got on the board early after the semyon home. Run i believe that's when it stops. Oh for unless i'm mistaken but either or there's lots to i guess you know. Give him time. And of course you know a few more games here and there and especially a weekend or a couple a three game series coming up in texas It'll be interesting to see how that pans out. And how we head into next weekend's home opener away from home against the angels so Yeah not not too concerning yet to be clear. I am not hitting the panic button. This is just something. I'm keeping my eye on over the next few days. And i think it's interesting that if the blue jays had lost two of three or been swept heaven forbid but if that happened than we would be having a completely different conversation and many fans would be ripping the blue jays for messing up with runners in scoring position. Which it's a problem for every team. I feel like the same frustrations even if you're the lots angeles dodgers exist in terms of stranding guys in scoring position straining guys on base. It just happens as baseball team. But it's something. I keeping an eye on see if the blue jays can do the little things in terms of that a little bit better than they have in the past Okay the last thing i want to talk about about. These games is a lineup construction. I've found it really interesting. That game one game. Two exact same lineup. I'm not sure we ever saw that at all. In twenty twenty. We certainly didn't see it in back to back games. I don't know if we ever saw them rolled out the same lineup. Even one week to another. I've found it really interesting. Going with the exact same lineup. Not much discuss their. They shifted it around a little bit like the changes. Montolio made for game three today. I like putting kurkin. Give johnson a little bit of arrest period. Yeah the only difference and actually looking at it right now like you said game one and two or the exact same but in game three. Today the first six banners were the exact same. The only differences were Seven eight nine were grischuk panic kirk whereas previously it was till as grischuk janssen so i mean not a ton go with with are not ton to say about that i think the bluejays have they have it set..

"I have zero reason to be optimistic for them. Coming to toronto in the same thing with the raptors gotta look at them. Because they're in. I think it's tampa bay right now or at least in the same arena that the tampa bay lightning play. And they're not it doesn't look like they're coming up to toronto so i don't think the blue jays will have the same They'll have the same things and they're not coming up to toronto over I'm just interesting i have. I have optimism because one. Yeah the vaccine distribution right now is poor jacob. How ever a lot can change in a couple of months. And they're saying by the summer it's get a lot better. Yeah there's still promising everyone to be vaccinated by so they haven't they. Haven't you know there's still a chance for that. And this is what. I think they go back and this it's different from the raptors because while the raptors are playing right now and it's different and they're going to and obviously around the summer it's going to be a little bit delayed as it usually ends. Because of how late they started. How cool would it be for candidate. They go back. That's my prediction and if it's not candidate. They're back august or september. There's ten games right. There are eleven games. Especially if you go on to around august. But i think a perfect situation is candidate. I just have optimism that they're going to be back there at some point this year. Game seven the world roger center. I would buy tickets for that even if it was like five grand a one hundred percent. Yeah i agree with jacob. Because i think the inertia is that once a season starts are not gonna wanna move. I don't see them starting in dunedin and then all of a sudden you know saying it would be amazing if kennedy we can. They're like okay. Yeah we're gonna move up to the rodgers enter and celebrate it this way. It would be incredible. But i just don't see the thing happening that way i just. I just think the inertia will be so much that they just won't move this season. And you know maybe we see it happen. But i really don't think it's gonna happen. I'm agreeing with jacob putting the under and zero games At the rogers centre okay. The next question is which blue jays or any blue jays. I guess we'll make the all star team. I three names on this was a little bit of bishops but i think the most obvious choices boba shit. I think that's no brainer. Another name had market simeon. Maybe a little bit of more of a question mark. I think he i'm confident. And i'm trusting that he will be close to what he was in two thousand nineteen. I don't think he'll be as good. But i think you'll be close to what he was maybe six war player And and i think that's obviously good enough the all star game and then the third name. Perhaps this is a little bit of a surprise. But jordan. Romano i think is going to make the all star team. I'm beyond his. I did not even think of romano. But i don't know how i didn't because he was fantastic last year and he has done nothing to prove me. proved to me that he's going to do otherwise. But i'm a i'm going to agree with you. Boba sheds making the all star team. Mlb loves to loves to post about him on social media. They clearly love him and he's a good player..

"That's three point. One million dollars and rafael deletes. One point five million dollars so when you add that up. It's over fifty million dollars right there. That are coming off the books and the amount of financial flexibility to that that this team has even signing semyon to a one year deal makes it even more of a smarter move and there's lots of directions that this team can go and even if we head into let's just say you know the one thing. A lot of fans are overlooking to is the offs or the free agency isn't just the area where the jays can add. People are forgetting to of the trade deadline next because that. Don't be surprised if the james could be active. They were active last year and we saw them pulling off a lot of low risk deals were for people like taiwan walker. Robbie ray i guess you have to throw in jonathan vr. But you know this team to as we head into the trade deadline. There's a lot of flexibility because of the offseason. They have ahead of the next year and all these players that are coming off the books and other big contracts that they can look to trade maybe ran grischuk. That's the name that's been been thrown around but you know i really liked the way. The blue jays have set themselves up here entering the season because even ross atkins metropol. They've been doing lots of interviews and maybe even in the spring conference. I don't know if they mentioned it or not but they alluded to multiple times that the free free agency isn't just the only way where they can add. So that's one thing that is going to be interesting for me. Is that trade deadline because of the financial flexibility that they have. But i'm just very happy with the deal and the one year just makes it all worth it to me in terms of paying him eighteen million dollars but a good signing in a great piece for the lineup. We saw some people saying that this wasn't the end of the pursuit for infielders for the blue jays. I mean kris bryant has been the name that's been tossed around a little bit. Some people are saying they should still be involved in a deal for chris bryan and pitcher. Or you know. Still be on the margaret for. We've seen other names name. I like colin wong guys like that. Is that true. i. I personally think this ends it. Scott mitchell said you know still be on the lookout. The blue jays could add place on third as you move bijou to the outfield or busy. Oh you know. He's playing in different positions every day to give someone the day off. I don't see that happening. I see the blue jays now focusing all their attention on either a reliever or be a starter and that's it. I don't see them as pursuing an infielder given that they've already got simeon in that they've already got an infield crunch in terms of playing time. Do you guys think they're done on the infield or are you still keeping the open. The door open for another acquisition. I'm gonna say they're done be made mainly because they they really need to be like you said mark there. They've got a crowded infield. They have guys coming up in the next couple of years. Who are earning even further crowd. This and quite frankly i think i'm i'm happy with the infield they have i thought it was good even before the simeon acquisition and i still think it's decent with that being said they do need to get pitching bullpen is probably going to be more of a. We'll see what happens it towards the very very end of the offseason..

"I don't want to bury the lead but you know with with him in another addition in addition the pitching staff. Then i feel confident. In saying look we are at the raise level or a little bit exceeding it I think where prob. If i'm being honest with myself right and i again i hate to be that guy. I just don't know that right. Now we'd we'd win a seven game series against the raz mostly because the starting pitching that we lack offensively it would probably be a high scoring game. I it'd probably be a home run derby but it just who scores the most at that point on maybe if is trotting out game one you feel confident in there but after that it's kind of toss up as it stands right now so i'm a little uncomfortable saying that we're at the raise level. I disagree with that. I'd say we're about at yankee level right now. In terms of hallen in matching on. And i would put the blue jays right now. I think i series could go seven against the i don't even get is at this point. They do play well. That's for sure they have had their last year's outside the rays last year we had the american league is that you know the orioles play so but is i have a good time for you and i'm just going to throw this out here. Who recalls the nineteen ninety-five cleveland indians. Running all the way to the world series nothing but manny ramirez in. Our ballot is weighing at team. Didn't have a ton of pitching and found ways to bludgeon people to tap as far as it goes i looking at this lineup. Anxiety was pulling it off without my head. I couldn't remember who the heck was actually all in that lineup. Forget to go with it but eerily similar in some of the fashion and kenny lofton leading off. Which is you know more or less. I'm going to compare him to what we get when bogus shot more or less. Right speeds speedy player hits vol solid. Gets everything going and kevin video right there. You got those two guys equal in that and then you had manny ramirez rbis scall- jim thome and albert bell really rounded that out. You can make the argument that this lineup looks very scary..

"The blue jay z. And it's just a very unfortunate situation. I think a lot of people through sports and espn all these other reporters. They've always basically said if you want a good team in canada you have to draft you have to trade or overpay and it just kind of is how it is you know you look at the blue jays. Most of their roster is from international signings or signings our draftkings or something in order to kinda not convinced the player but out of their control. You know obviously you can control if you sign with the team that drafted you but at the same time. They've already selected you so it's just unfortunately with free agency. I'm starting to get a little worried. I was very optimistic and the start of it. Even though even you'll go back to the summer. I didn't think we're going to have a very aggressive free agency. But they said they were optimistic that they would do something. But now as we're seeing. Is you know we thought the the yankees we're going to the blue jays we're going to snag. Dj lemay you from the yankees. Well he kind of you know. He ended up. Going back to the yankees. Even though the blue jays comparably offered him a better amount per year. So it's just is unfortunately we're to seal free agency goes. It's definitely a weird situation to be in because like you said mark. I want obviously the blue jays to be a good team and i think that they they do have the money to spend right now but at the same time. At what point do you draw the line. Saying this is an okay amount of money but anything more than that you know. Maybe it gets player. But it's not worth it in terms of you know the bottom line. Well let's create this like if if the blue jays miss out on george springer like what happens then do they just go all in on like trevor bauer or jt. Romeo like i guess. That's why i'm not totally freaking out yet. Because there's still so many other names on the market like i'm not even pitchers like james paxton. Jay z like these guys are still on the market. So that's why i'm like. It's not the end of the world. If they miss out on. George i get like. That's where i'm that's how. I'm trying to convince myself that that's true so that i don't get too disappointed with the news of springer signing with the mets which i honestly if i'm being honest i it kind of feels like it's inevitable at this point. Yeah exactly i'm not. I'm not panicking yet like you said there are. There is still time. I mean it's not like free or it's not like Spring training and whatnot. Starting next week there is time but it is still just a weird situation. I think the blue jays do miss out. On george springer the fans a lot of them will lose their mind on twitter You know people will say how dare you get us all hyped up for this entire off season and then do nothing as for me. I'm not gonna get angry. Like george springer is a great player..

"Of the best season their career right florida's grill junior having three hundred oscar hernandez having a bunch of home runs winning silver slugger award. They just came off amazing season. So i'm not sure. The blue jays are ready to trade them are willing to trade them because of the performance. I just put up so to me. This is a little bit of a stretch to make it work. And i like i said. I don't think it's going to happen. Maybe brazen they do get a little bit too aggressive as we've been saying for the past couple of weeks couple months. Maybe they get nervous. They're scared they're going to miss out on guys. They see this as their opportunity to get a big name. George springer and then a little bit of a bonus in michael brantley but personally. I don't really like this idea see. That's the big thing that i'm noticing. None of us really disagree. That michael brantley or george springer good players. But you know you kind of go back to that old saying if it isn't broke don't fix it. You know the blue jays arguably want to slash should replace randall grischuk. But they don't need to replace anybody else in the outfield as you said more tasker hernandez largest grill junior at some of the best years of their career last year and i think they are solidifying themselves as borderline stars and you know if you want to replace them with a guy that arguably it's still a very good player but it doesn't really make sense because you have already guys that that can take that role and i think that similar to the whole of francisco endure conversation where you know. The blue jays could benefit from him. But they already have guys that can take over that role. Yeah there's it's been. I don't know i don't know how i currently feel. I wanna get your guys updates. Because there was a lot this week. I guess that connects to the blue jays is because of the players. They've been interested in. But i i just. I want to get your thoughts guys on your current optimism forgetting george springer. You know there was the report yesterday that he apparently prefers to play close to where he's from in connecticut and of course new york is closer But it's still based off what we know it. "He's been late soda. he's been phenomenal. He was he was an all star in two thousand nineteen like i mentioned beforehand and last year as well. He played forty six games. He had an eight forty. He was another one. Who put up solid numbers last year. Take away from it. What you want in a sixty game season but it's just consistent to what his career numbers are. And if you bring in michael brantley and spring or that definitely create some problems. But that's why. I do think that if it's possible that the jays could potentially do this because of the reason alone of them being or wanting to be aggressive in free agency just because of these names that they're starting to miss out on and the options are still there. Don't get me wrong but the names are starting to fade very slowly with these players signing elsewhere. Such as lemay. Hugh hendricks and among others. Who jason interested in. Yeah and just to reiterate. Ken rosenthal wasn't reporting this. As like a solidified thing that the bluejays are trying to do he was just kinda bouncing ideas off of people and seeing you know. Could this be a potential for the blue jays and but to what you were saying bracingly. Michael brantley is really good right like the last time he hit below three hundred was a couple years ago in two thousand seventeen and he hit two ninety nine right so he's a really really good hitter guy who's going to be. You know a backup. Outfielder a fourth outfielder. A guy who's may be getting in the lineup d. h. every couple of days michael apprently michael brantley. Who's going to be a starter so it's a little bit weird that the blue jays don't have space firms already. We saw people before when you know. They're originally interested in outfielders like j. b. j. george springer michael brantley people are questioning like Top priority be pitching like you don't have a lot of room In the outfield and let you trade someone ran aggressor which we assume as part of the blue jays locked term plans so to me. It's like you said bryson. You need a trade to make this work already. Getting george springer was a stretch. If you add michael brantley into the equation. There's no way you get out of this without trading randall grischuk. Plus maybe someone like laura's goyal junior or heaven forbid oscar hernandez but even if you're trading one of those guys it's like.

"Hello and welcome to episode one hundred of section one thirty eight staking us. I don't know four years to get here but we're finally here as always i'm joined by pricing and jacob power. You guys good thanks. How are you fr- first of all. It's very good to reach the century. Mark it's a pretty big milestone so special episode for sure. And how are you taking great. It's it's it's been a long time coming. It's it's definitely been fun. Well this week we were going to do special episode and then we decided you know. We're kind of rolling with everything happening in free agency. Of course lots of lots of news this week with a couple of guys that the blue jays were interested in signing So we decided just to keep things going. Keep talking 'bout Free agency everything. That's happening with the blue jays so We'll start things off with what we heard. Just a couple hours ago from ken rosenthal. He reported or suggested that the blue jays might be interested in not only signing george springer but also signing michael brantley as well because the two are very strong friends. And we've seen the blue jays interested in springer we've seen them interest in brantley cover ago but we've never seen Both of these rumors kind of intersect in the way they're intersecting now and i mean what do you guys think about the the need for the blue jays to get to outfielders because as it is already we know that the blue jays obviously want an improvement in the outfield. Obviously they have random brisk. They're not happy with. But if they got brantley and springer that would mean taking away at bats taking away playing time from guys like tasker hernandez guys from like lord girl junior maybe if you slide brantley into a designated hitter spot. You're taking away from someone like vladimir guerrero junior depending where he plays whether it's mostly at first base mostly at designated hitter split between the two so it seems like this might be a good idea on paper for the blue jays but it's a little bit flawed in the execution in that it could pose problems on the field. So what do you guys think about this report from. Ken rosenthal yes. I think the same thing that you just said mark this is going to take away time from you know other players whether it be the outfield specifically or you know as designated here i think michael brantley is a good player. Last year he did hit three hundred with a three sixty four basis showing me. He's not a. It's not a bad player by any means. But like you said if first of all i think of george springer or any outfielder comes he's going to take over randall..

"I mean when i look at the standings you know we've talked about this. Are the blue jays. Going to be better than the raise. Next year i could happen. I think that's probably the biggest competition i mean. The the yankees are still going to be decent. You know they were both them and the blue jays made the playoffs last year. Actually there was only one game Between the two of them with the yankees having one extra win. But that's probably the most accurate prediction. I'd i mean ninth. In the league really depends. I mean any normal year that means they make the playoffs but even this year with In twenty twenty. I think the instead of having. What was the sixteen team playoffs this year. They're looking at maybe fourteen or twelve something less than sixteen so ninth bassin's that you know they make the playoffs. I mean do. I think ninth is accurate. I don't know it really depends on how. How big a lead. The bluejays take this year. So you ask for the two players that were called out in terms of charleena montoya vladimiro junior. I think it's interesting with montoya because it seems as if so many aspects so many people within the media whether it's a manager of the year voting last year this year their predictions a buck. Martinez has said that. He predicted a ton of votes. Would go charlie's way. I think you know maybe there are a lot of things that maybe we are a little. I don't know if two is the right word you know. Maybe maybe i'm the one that has it wrong. Maybe he is a lot better manager than i think but Watching watching him every day. It's just there are. He's not a terrible manager. And i think the players do really like him. But i think there are a lot of ways but he could improve as for vladi. Mvp seems a little bit farfetched. Think he you know he. He's a good player. He's been putting in a ton of work in the off season. I don't think we can discredit that. He's seems as if every couple days a new story poster new instagram post of him. You running or something but it honored to be the mvp union to you. You need to take a massive leap forward which he could do. You think he is. A very good player has a very high ceiling. Obviously he was projected to be very good even his rookie days with the number one prospect in baseball before he came up. But.

"I don't think it's that big deal. Also we that is interesting. Is the fact that francisco indoor does only have such a short amount of time that he would probably be with the blue jays before he had to sign an extension or anything. Because one of the things that we've all said is if the blue jays are to acquire francisco indoor they to sign him to an extension because if you lose him after a year then is that worth it and i don't think it is so if they were to trade for him a couple of days ago that was on the roster i think right now would be the time that you have to sign to an extension or some type of deal because the last thing you want is to trade for him. Now wait till the end of the season and then you're you're basically stuck trying to acquire him again. I think right now would have to basically spend most of their time on francisco lindores so even like you said mark. This deal probably would have been more of a burden you know. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Bluejays obviously could benefit from francisco indoor but is it really worth it to sign him or trade for him potentially folks on signing him now or wait till next offseason because who knows what happens next off season you there could be a lot of different things going on so it's just overall it just the blue jays maybe and maybe this is a bit of a good thing happening for them not getting. Yeah and there's lots of pros and cons. Come with the steel. And i'm i'll i'll say it again. I was one of the. I was the only person out of all three of us. Who wanted this to happen or in favor of this to happen but the one thing that makes me at peace with it as well mark. I think that's perfect way to put it is that there's still names available. Not everyone is gone off the market. And if that's a different situation. Let's say george springer goes to the mets. Let's just say they go. Wherever digital may he goes back to new york and the jays masada lender then you're scrambling and the problem is.
