"Blake Stubbs. We covered Chicago movies before we move on just real quickly. What's your favorite movie that was filmed and set in Chicago? Building said in Chicago. Oh, absolutely a thief. I love thief. I could watch Thief any day of the week. I'm a big Michael Mann. That too. I have to. I have to confess. But I also love his L a work one of my favorites of this past year. Was the trial of the Chicago seven. That was such a good movie Now. Was that ever in theaters? No, that was a Netflix produced. Well, okay. The short answer is no because it was widely released on Netflix. But it did. I believe do what a lot of films Netflix does do, and I think they were able to get a screen somewhere, so that if it was any pick up with the Oscars They can say it did have a theatrical release. It is the type of film that could maybe one day get a short theatrical relief. Um, because Netflix, you know will do that if it has to overcome any hurdles with criteria for awards submission, But honestly, this was produced to be released on Netflix. On guy thought it was an excellent pairing of Aaron Sorkin with the cast have to work with. I mean fashion. Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance. Why I could not be a bigger fan of I thought that this movie was maybe and again. This is Erin circuit of a bigger in circumstance. So over the many years I've tried to see his material age. You know? How does it aged with today's, uh, you know, current political climate. This was a movie that I think hit at a good time. I think this was a very well made production. I think that the cast was outstanding. And I think that if you like watching and listening there in Cirque and dialogue, it's filled with little Easter eggs that the fans are gonna love. Um, I know that at some point, it's like he needs to get some new Eastern, like, well, he puts him in there because they're Sure for the things you know, like it. Z like his language is his thing. But I found Sasha Baron Cohen on Mark Rylance, particularly to be outstanding in the incredible Sasha Baron Cohen. Wow nailed it. I'm absolutely huge favorite in that film for me was Michael Keaton. How cool was he? Yes, it is proof that an actor can take what I would what I would call a small amount of screen time because he wasn't like a main star of the film and make a massive impact and and proof that there are no small parts is small actors and Michael Keaton is more on the titan level, in my opinion when he when he gets the right We get the right material. He really brings the juice. I also wanna give a shout out to particular after that has been breaking out the last couple of years. Yeah, Yeah. Abdul Mateen, the second who was on watchman playing Dr Manhattan on HBO this last year. He's in this film. He will also be in the candy man film that will be released in 2021. This guy is outstanding. I have not seen him be bad in anything. Not that I would expect you to be bad, but I mean, he just every time I see him. I'm like, Wow, this guy's got it and and in this particular Film he was. He was quite a presence for the limited time he was given, because of course, these are all historical characters. So like if you're watching, and you know the story of the trial, the Chicago seven. He's only there for a particular short period of time. But what an impression in my opinion, one of the things you mentioned it was historical. The character of Lee whiner was totally different than what he really looked like. He looked like Abbie Hoffman's brother. He had the beard the Afro the whole nine yards. In the movie, he was clean cut. Which was, you know a bit of a stretch, and I think that was because he wasn't that big of a player. In the film on day and they didn't want to take away from Sasha Baron Cohen. I'm sure you know, I think I think they do. They kind of allow it toe visually. It's a downplay so that you know who do it just your focus to at all times, and that's one of those. Dramatic licensing issues that you'll run into. I think whether it's theatrical or cinematic. It happens all the time. Lee whiner on Ah, show Ah, great interview with him and he is such a cool guy. He is an incredible dude like a real deal, hippie and he was just so down to Earth and Oh, it was great. It was great. All right, before a couple more things about well, the year 2020 in in in film, the number one grossing star off 2020. I found was Samuel L. Jackson, who is in like four movies. He was number one, Dwayne Johnson was in number two stars making money out of movies. Right when you do for movies in the year, you're gonna make some money, right? Yeah. I don't know. You would hope you would hope? Yeah. Do you know I don't know if you saw there was a commercial with Samuel L. Jackson was for capital One who? He, You know he does commercial for him. With Santa and Santa was John Travolta. And they're talking. You know, Samuel Jackson makes a great offer from Capital one. And John Travolta says, Well, you know, that's a great offer, You know, have you are you have you been good? Have you done with the bad words? Those air? That's his question to Samuel L. Jackson. He goes, Yeah. Hit John Travolta as Santa wraps and says Ho ho. I don't think so. That was so hysterical. So I had to get I had to get that in. Um I know a big You're a big fan of this movie, which was incredible. It wasn't 2020. It came on 2019, right. Once upon a time in Hollywood. Yeah. So I am a big fan of once upon a time in Hollywood and in 2020, You know, everybody talks about how they were locked, You know, Shut in. You know, you had to find ways to escape. And what What is your form of escapism? I think became a question. Everybody in some form or another had the answer. For me. One of the pinnacles of it was two years ago have at this point. Now we're almost two years removed from it once from the time in Hollywood came out because it's you know, night 2019 was just a 2019. I was so excited for that film. I saw that film with the music box in Chicago. I saw it in 70 millimeter with a packed house full of people. It was probably my last Big cinematic experience, because I I come up to Chicago because I'm down in Peoria, but I went to Chicago for cinematic experiences all the time. Specifically at the music box. I love that fear. On For me. I feel like cinema is a great way to escape. Once upon a time in Hollywood is a big one. For me. I love the characters. I think the movie is goes on a bit of a wild ride, but I also just think it's about people at a certain point. And what Los Angeles in 1969 looks like a lot of the buildings and things that you see are still there, and they all look almost identical like the Cinerama Dome..

"Wouldn't know 30th. Whatever it was, there was a new anniversary, and there were some scenes that were not seen in the original movie. One of my favorites was that Elwood had a job. And that's where he got the glue from. He worked at a glue factory of some sort, and he stole the glue that you see later in the film that that did not make the original cut. I thought that was so cool. No, and it's kind of crazy. How a lot of that stuff always ends up on the cutting room floor. I mean, obviously makes for great blue right features or DVD features later years later, but when they're trying to, you know, make Whatever studios behind the film, make those executives happy while still making an engaging movie. Um, sometimes good stuff you know, gets left behind on did things like that, like the glue factory job? It's a good character nuance, but it's something that they felt. I think disjointed before with the film, it was able to keep moving along much quicker. Without it in there, you could do without it, but it was so cool to see it and buddies and I were watching it at a bar. It was like a movie night at the bar that we hang out. And in that part, everyone's looking at each other. Like, Hey, wait a minute. What is this? We never saw this before. This is so cool. Write more. And you run into that a lot, too, when they would play stuff on television when it goes to cables for any kind of broadcast, because when they have to edit content out those scenes get put back in in order to meet the necessary time, along with commercials and advertising. But in the case of blues brothers, you know it's an R rated movie. I mean, they have to make some cuts and sometimes those things in one random television broadcast. Sure we'll end up getting thrown back in and you're saying they're going. Wait a minute. I've never seen this before. And I've seen this movie six times. It's because of that 100% because of that black Buster Blake Stubbs is with us here at 7 20, WGN. We're talking about Chicago movies. Now we're gonna take a quick break here when we come back. Thanks so much for joining us. How you doing? I'm doing Well, thanks for having me. I just our first time on the air together. I'm looking forward to it. Be a lot of fun. So be gentle with me. Okay, um so Before we get started. Tell us a little bit about yourself for folks who may not know why the blockbuster talk to me about that. So that kind of started as a gag gain. Neil, who hosts quite regularly here on WGN, long time ago when I first kind of got into being on these particular airwaves through a good friend of mine, John Hanson, who listeners will know as ah, regular on the station as well brought me in to just talk about movies. But I've been doing that since I was in college. Actually, I I started back way in the early two thousands. On wt. Do you want a 71 of the University of Illinois? And the first thing they ask me that I liked to do was or what I would like to talk about. I said movies if I could, and they said, Cool, Go review the 40 year old Virgin and I've been doing it ever since. I did not know that you're a P G u alumni. Yes, sir. Actually, thanks. Yeah, that John myself. That's kind of how my connection brought me to the station. Actually, I am a swell. I was a little bit before you, but I was there as well. We'll say a couple of minutes before no big deal. You know, just a couple of minutes. Sorry. You know that I got cut my teeth there, man. It was so fun on. I felt like they gave a lot of creative freedom. And it was just something that somehow you know, Radio is not my primary occupation. But for whatever reason, I've never been able to walk away from it. I just love doing it. And I always seem to find a way back. You're smart man had to be here. You're a smart man for not relying on it. I'll tell you that right now. Um Ah. Great Place T get started for for people who don't know. W P G was at the University of Illinois in urban champagne. And it is a college commercial radio station. Unlike a lot of college stations, you have to make money. You have to go out and sell advertising and you have to be a student to do that. And the amount of experience that you get. There is incredible, and it's still alive and vibrant today, which is really, really cool, right? Absolutely. Yeah, And I know that Ah, lot of my friends who you know, I graduated with somehow they're still sort of affiliated with radio that I've met doing radio there or they work in. Even print media still because in the last couple of years of my time at U of I, the paper and the radio station, which were owned by the same company kind of murders, and they just they became one in a lot of ways, so you were able to get a little more experience. I think that you might have thought initially. You know, if you just went in loving music, you would come out with an appreciation for writing about it as well as talking about it on the air. And I think that that It's invaluable, at least it with young people. You know when they're trying to find out what they really loved to do Sure, sure we didn't like the print people too much down there when we were ready. E just want to be honest with you. All right, that Z move on. Let's start get started tonight with Chicago movies. Now I'm talking about films. Filmed here in Chicago, not set in Chicago. That doesn't count. It's kind of like the difference between the TV show Mike and Molly, which is set in Chicago didn't film here. But the Chicago TV show's PD Fire Chicago met all those said in Chicago and filmed here in Chicago. That's what we're talking about. We heard the Blues Brothers music at the beginning. That I think it just made the city of Chicago looks so good on film. Right? It was It was great. Good and exciting on it showed. You know, obviously, the two main characters came from nothing right. You know they were two brothers that came came from nothing. And then you just get to see from the the pulling of Jake out of, you know Juliette's when he gets picked up all the way through to the end with the big chases, everything just made the city look good. They filmed throughout Illinois to make that movie happen. They used some other locations, obviously, too, but everything pretty much is the Chicago Land area. On Dino, that you know, if you have spent any time in downtown Chicago, you can't look around without missing a landmark from that particular film. I mean, they're just everyone so I think it's one of those films that granted. I grew up in Illinois, so I can relate mentally to the movie in terms of locations and, you know, getting the kind of see the exciting things On film, which, by the way, I'm a huge fan of great cinematography, and I actually think blues brothers is very well shot for both of action Chase movie as well as a musical. Andre comes to Chicago movies. You cannot, I think, have a list. Chicago films without having the Blues brothers, either at the top of the list or very close to it. And Lucas John Lucas, who did the movie was so proud that he got John Lee Hooker on film and all those blues legends. It was incredible something that I want to bring up about the movie Ah few years ago was the 20th..

"When you knew it would be safe and depending on your home set up, you might have something really huge and crazy. I just have a decent television and a nice little sound bar. But I actually got a chance to sit and watch the film. It was on the evening of Christian Stay late late in the day. Once all the festivities were done on day. Honestly, this one did not click with me as well as the first film This is I felt like was a bit of a disappointing sequel. I thought that it it was a little bit of a mass in the end, And while there are some good performances in it, I thought that it stretched other elements of what made the first film a little too far and kind of broke the magic of what I Had hoped would just parlay right into a sequel. I think the time shift was an interesting 4th 1984. So I was really amped up for that. But in the end, aside from a few key scenes that were like, Oh, yes, the 19 eighties I didn't feel like it. Really felt like an eighties movie I thought felt like it. I thought it felt like a real modern movie. And then once it got to, you know, the third act, I thought, Okay, well, there's some okay action here, but it doesn't really measure up to what I felt. The first film did so well. Um, now If you're a big wonder woman fan, I think you're gonna get plenty to enjoy, However, you know, we live in a world where everybody's got so much access to comic book movies now, so seeing one is not really, I think realistic, like I think you're going to see so many different things, and there is a chance that you have a bit of fatigue from these types of movies. So with one big comic book release In Wonder Woman 1984. I don't know that this was by any means was exciting Asses. First film was nor the payoff in the end being something that you know measures up to the success of other comic book films. And I think that that has nothing to do with. You know what they're probably going to do with the third film, though, to say the least, but they've already announced there's gonna be a third film in the series. Like this is the This was DCs Good movie. This was the one that I think everybody agreed that. Hey, you know, it's so much for all of the other things in the dark and brooding and some of the underwhelming superhero stuff like Wonder Woman. This was their can't miss. And I don't know if there's any excuses. When you have the ability. You have a whole extra year to work on it and you go take things and kind of, you know, shift him around or work the ending out because I think everybody's in agreement with you that it was underwhelming in a bunch of different ways. Kind of, oddly. Position in a few other ways and then kind of a mess. You know, at the end and they went in. They did. The whole even were able to bring Steve Trevor back from the dead. So they figured out a way to go ahead and do that as well. I was just I was just a little confused. By just the fact with all of this X and with everything riding on it, too, because this wasn't just another movie in another serious this was for the DC universe This is going to be this is their cornerstone. And then also for the greater kind of movie watching world the way that they're rolling this out with the HBO Max and everything going to set a precedent if this worked. If this was successful, this could be a trendsetter. For a lot of different things. We're going to take a quick break when we come back. We're gonna continue our conversation with Blockbuster. Blake Stubbs. Of course. You know Michael Rooker from walking dead, you know, from guardians of the Galaxy. And what this means. This kind of dump of all the movies to the back end of a lot of those artists. And so this plays into the economy for them as well. We'll talk about that when we come back his staying here on 7 20, WGN..
