Senators beat Rangers 5-3 to spoil Patrick Kane's debut
"The debut of a new ranger was spoiled by a pair of old ones as the senators earned a 5 three win at Madison Square Garden. Derek Broussard scored twice to back fellow X ranger camp Talbot, who stopped 29 shots. Talbot denied Patrick Kane with a pad save with 5 minutes left in the third. Cain was playing for the first time since the rangers acquired him from the Blackhawks this week. It would be nice to kind of settle in. Get a couple practices and kind of understand the way they want to play. So you know andrew brunette probably better than most Just historically speaking real sharp hockey mind you know funny guy. So i'm wondering what you think of. Even the interim appointment of of brew as head coach now of the florida panthers and whether this is something bills either on the panthers should consider long-term. While i was it was hard to be happy given the circumstance For grew to become the head coach. But i was happy that he was getting an opportunity to do it at one of my favorite teammates of all time honestly one of the funniest people on the planet. Here's another thing about him. He didn't make the nhl till he was twenty seven. He scored led the american league in scoring not fast enough not fast at nine. Twenty seven before they expand to nashville and brew gets an opportunity than he ends up. In minnesota another expansion team then he ends up in atlanta another expansion team scored the last school ever on patrick wa in game seven against minnesota in overtime and i said to a wall must looked at that at that. Highlight clip said brunette. Deked me it's time to retire. It's so brew ended up playing a thousand games so my point drake's is that he was a grinder of the game. He's he loves the game he loves the nuance of the game. I he's a fantastic people person. I think he would be a really good head coach now. Would they continue to allow him to be the head coach or do they look at some other more. Tried and true guys because man. This is a good team like do you want to do. Are you comfortable enough with a man with two games of head. coaching experience. Now to be your head coach i. I don't know what bill zito will will find there. Yeah and you've got the relationship. Historically with bill zito in columbus and and john tortorella hence the john tortorella speculation possibility on them whether he's a fed there I mean we. Some of us in the media always look towards his potentially being the closer right So the the opportunity here might be a fit but deer point. That's up to bill. Zito and ownership of the florida panthers. Why don't we wrap up headlines with two for one here and again we're acknowledging you know some of the real positive starts at the clubs around the league less than ten games and as we record saint louis section one. Not saying they didn't see this coming. I'm surprised how strong they've been boffa. Five two in one under donna. Granato surprise. Knock that don has had the influence that he's had but come on. I mean they're they're still very much in a transition of not a rebuild start was lumped both those teams in the final piece of headlines here. But i've just had enough jordan bending and and and the the antics and the nonsense right i mean. There's no disputing. He's al of a goalie is down. Come champ deserves. I don't i don't think it's that. Cavalier now but i don't know and i think it would be fair to say players. Pay attention secondarily To the players association and and what happens the players association's job its mission statement is one thing protect the player they failed. They failed and so for those. That aren't quite aware of what a black is. Which was the designation if you will of kyle beach so those are players called up during the playoff run to play if they get through the injuries on or to get through the roster in their injured at the play weeks upon weeks that they need another player to to jump into the lineup. Those players are not around the team. Like at that time A general guideline would be the players. The the aecom the nhl players there around the rink from tila probably about twelve or twelve thirty on either on an off day. Dac's come in about two o'clock like they don't want interaction mainly because of the sheer volume of people around the rink right and so it's easy to say the players association kyle wasn't even really a member of the players association at that time he had just been called up from junior. That that too is bullshit. Because he's in the nhl building is there is under the auspices of the chicago blackhawks. He's there he needed to be protected and when he went to the players association he got dust. And that is. That's the only part of this independent investigation on. Ta side that. I'm interested in because the rest of it. It's already in the report right. Why didn't he get attention. Why didn't he get care. Why wasn't he protected. No and it really isn't going to matter of don. Fear leaves the post as executive director. What does it matter now. It's not gonna matter at this point. I mean the truth is he was telling. Prominent player agents Very recently that. He's likely going to retire. This as well in advance of a what kyle beach and the nhl players association are dealing with but The fact that fair has recommended the independent investigation. I mean again. As i said earlier at at least this allows the process to identify. Who knew who is involved in who wasn't involved because now they're good people at the nhl players association or maybe would have done things differently. Had they know so again one of the many reasons one of the many layers still all of this that are going to Keep it on our radar here on raindrops for the foreseeable future. Just sad at the lack of response sat disbelief that that aldridge was allowed to be around the team and celebrated the stanley cup There's no way to defend the blackhawks management and their inaction Around this around this twenty ten time line and years subsequent. The fine wasn't nearly enough. Two million dollars not nearly enough. That fine should have included punitive penalty in A cap space because the team is still going forward that should have had a larger component to Sexual abuse sexual trauma survivors There should've been a bigger component to that mid. There's so much to this. Look i'd known joel quenneville for forty years We broke in together in nineteen eighty five in hartford. Well i broken. He was already in the league. I'm sad jordan. Report this sad. He didn't do it and he he shouldn't be coaching right now. I'm sad for that. But this is about what happened to kyle and what the fallout is and once you get to the follow. What is the path forward. How does this you can say so. It never happens again. But what are the guard rails. Did the system works under. And if those guard rails are so stringent that this stuff can get pushed to the outside bengals aren't guardrails there barriers. The league teams the governor's the players association. All need to come up with a individual road that can be understood publicly yet. If somebody wants to make an allegation it can be done independently and privately. There is no question in my mind rates. A third party independent group needs to be managing any abuse claims whether they be abuse or sexual in nature that needs to be independent. The league's involvement is that they pay a retainer on july first of every year. And that's it Now there's and. I don't even know if i don't even know if that's i feel terrible for kyle..

So just to keep you accounting going here then, this is two alleged incidents of abuse before the 2013 case in Michigan involving the minor that resulted in that conviction that you described before of Brad Aldrich. All of which makes me wonder Emily, what happened to Kyle beach's hockey career? I mean, as this guy is allowed to go free and live his life, what happens to the person he had allegedly abused? Kyle never makes it in the NHL. He plays another couple years in the AHL, the NHL's top minor league team. It's not working for him in the Blackhawks organization. He gets traded to the rangers. He plays with their AHL team in Hartford. And then he goes off to Europe and that's where he's played pretty much since 2014. In places like Austria and Slovakia and Germany where he plays now, and it's really hard not to connect the trauma that he endured and the fact that there was no resolution. There was no closure. There was no one taking him seriously. And his career derailing. Does Kyle beach see this so clearly Emily? Like the abuse from Aldrich, the team's response or non response, as it happens that this all derailed his career, you know, in the interview with Rick west had he says, I'm just beginning the process because he suppressed this memory for so long and he buried it because he was trying to chase his dreams. I suppress this memory and buried this memory to chase my dreams and pursue the career that I loved and the game that I love of hockey. And now I think he's coming to terms with the fact that this prevented him from chasing those dreams and reaching those dreams and goals. And you know, he talked about it and he's looking back now and he realizes it definitely did have impact on his life. But no that I'm beginning to heal and I look back at it definitely had impacts on my life. I did stupid things I acted out. I snapped. I did things that I never could imagine doing. I relied on alcohol. I heard a light on drugs. And when you hear all of that, you can see, there's a clear cause and consequence between what happened with him with the Blackhawks organization and where his career ended up. Where did the union come into play here, you're describing things that theoretically, the NHL PA might have been able to help him with, but it doesn't sound like that happened either. Yeah, when we talk about next steps of the story, I think the players relationship with the NHL PA is going to be one to follow because the NHL PA was made aware of the allegations that pile beach made. And they referred him to their player substance abuse and behavior program, and then never followed up. And that does not sit well with a lot of players because the NHL PA inherently is there to protect them. I'm texting with one player. This weekend, and he said, for 9 years, the NHL pa new and did nothing to investigate or help Kyle and dealing with this trauma. So Don fear is the head of the NHL PA. He's been there for a while. He did come out with a statement and said, I acknowledge that I was part of the system that failed Kyle beach, but he doesn't take any personal accountability. And that does not sit well with players because accountability is something that's really big and hockey. And I think is really big at the heart of the story because no one took accountability for Kyle beach. And I can tell you Pablo, this is a topic they're not going to let go and it's something to fall over the next coming days, weeks, probably months. Emily, with a story like this that is so in retrospect, staggeringly mishandled, but I'm wondering what the NHL, what you expect them to do to make good on the fact that they're league in one of their teams failed failed someone so badly. So with NHL has done so far as they sent out a memo to teams last week and they called it fostering a safe and inclusive culture. And it basically just reaffirms things that they have told teams over the last several years. These weren't explicit instructions in 2010, but it's how the league has acted recently. And it basically says any league personnel and players are required to immediately report to Gary bettman or Bill Daley, who's the deputy commissioner, all conduct that's clearly inappropriate unlawful or demonstrably abusive. And basically what the league is saying is if something happens, don't go to your teams, come to us. We'll handle it. Now, I do know there are some people who look at that and say, well, if there's unlawful conduct, why are we going to the NHL? Go to law enforcement authorities. That's who you should be going to. And I think these are questions that are going to percolate over the next couple of weeks of what are the best practices here because Billie does have a hotline where people can call anonymously with issues if they don't feel comfortable reporting it to Gary bet Bill daily. But even still, that just doesn't feel like enough. Emily, as you report this story that is still unfolding here. Obviously, this is a sport that you love. It's the sport that you've been covering for so long, what are you learning that you didn't know before? You know, hockey, one of the reasons that we love the sport is that it's so team oriented. Again, guys, I'll use to print out eye. They say we are you. If you think of a star player besides a goalie, he's only playing a third of a game. You're so dependent on that team environment. And I think it's such a beautiful thing, but I think what we've learned in this Kyle beach case is that it can also be a harmful thing if you take it too seriously and you take it to too many extremes and you value that team over everything, including human lives and human trauma. And I think those are the conversations that are going to start happening that unfold out of this. And I think that Kyle beach coming forward not just with the lawsuit but coming forward with his name was such an empowering moment for the next generation because guys are realizing that, you know what? It is okay to speak up and be above the team if something really wrong did happen to you. Emily Kaplan, thanks for joining us and thanks for staying on this story. Thanks Pablo for covering it. I'm Pablo Torre. This has been ESPN daily. I'll talk to you tomorrow..

"A moment is that for him for anybody, really? Oh, it's huge. I mean, that season, he was in junior hockey. Again, 52 goals and 68 games. He was a very good player, but only plays four games in the AHL. And then it's very hard to make the jump right from junior hockey to the NHL, but him being called up showed what the organization thought of him that they wanted him to be around this big team of Brown the championship culture to get that taste and it pretended that the next year he would have a really good shot of making the roster. So he gets called up Emily. He travels with the team during the Western Conference Finals. And during that time, the full report from the law firm details several interactions that Kyle beach had with Brad Aldrich, the video coach. And many of them are described as Aldridge inviting beach to watch game tape to ostensibly improve his play as performance on the ice in private spaces like a hotel room. And these interactions, they then lead to the abusive incident in question and May 2010. Yeah, so according to the lawsuit, Aldrich invited Kyle to his apartment under the premise that Aldridge would go over some game clips with him. But when Kyle arrived the evening did not go as he expected it to. Both men are interviewed for the report. They both agree there was a sexual encounter that happens. Aldrich says it was completely consensual. While Kyle says it wasn't consensual at all. Each also says that he was physically threatened. He was blocked by the only exit and Aldrich was telling him, you'll never play in the NHL if you don't engage in the sex acts with me and also if you tell anybody. And so beach don't threaten. The idea that Brett Aldrich had power had this status on the team and influence over Kyle beach's career, can you explain how that worked back in 2010 like why did Brad Aldrich have this level of power over him? He's on the coaching staff, and I know a video coach isn't the head coach, or an assistant coach, but it's someone that's around the team all the time and someone that's talking to that head coach and the general manager all of the time. He's about 7 years older than Kyle beach. She was 27 when this happened, Kyle was 20. Brad actually comes from a hockey family. His dad is a long time employee of the sharks organization, been around hockey, his entire life. You know, I've had some conversations with people in hockey this week and a lot of them have pointed out, okay, well, Kyle beach was 20 years old, a big, strong, power forward. How could he have been sexually assaulted by a video coach? Who's a lot smaller in stature. And honestly, those conversations frustrate the heck out of me because it shows that there's just this basic comprehension that a lot of people don't get about power dynamics and about what consent is. It's not always physical force at play. There's other factors such as intimidation, Brad alders threatening his career or coercion, and that seems to be what Kyle felt at this time. And you know, there was rumors around the Blackhawks organization that Aldrich threatened careers in the past. Right in the full report points out that a half dozen witnesses say they had also heard about Aldrich threatening players careers along those lines. And so this traumatic encounter Emily, it happens and who does Kyle beach tell at that point? Who does he go to? So he called a confidante and confidante is interviewed by the Jenner and block investigators. And in that report, he says that when Kyle called him, he was crying. He could barely speak. The confidant was even wondering whether Kyle had gotten into a car accident because he couldn't even catch his breath. But he told him what happened, which is important. And then a couple days after that, Kyle gets the courage to tell Paul Vincent, who is on the Black Hawk staff, what happened? And Paul Vincent reports it up the food chain. And what is the report say about how Brad Aldrich acted in the days and weeks after this? According to the report, Brad Aldrich texted Kyle beach repeatedly. He showed up to the practices that Kyle was at specifically when the main team came off and the black ice is like Kyle, we're still on the ice. And he had to interact with him and face him every single day after this happened. So if Brad Aldrich, his alleged abuser is there in person around him. What does Kyle said about how this affected him as he was going through this? He said he felt extremely alone, and that TSN interview, he talked about feeling fearful, those couple days. It just had his career threatened. So I was scared mostly. I was fearful I had had my career threatened felt alone and dark sorry. It's tough to recall these moments. I think I felt like I was alone and there was nothing I could do and nobody I could turn to for help. So again, Kyle beach had told Paul Vince at a member of the coaching staff. What action was taken by the Blackhawks after Paul Vincent received that knowledge? Right, so Paul Vincent tells his superiors and then before Western Conference final game against the San Jose sharks, there's this meeting of the brain trust in a hotel room. And it involves pretty much all of the senior leadership. Stan Bowman, John McDonough, who is the team president at the time, Jay blanc, who was right under McDonough, Joel grenville, also Kevin shovel day off, who was an assistant GM. He's now the GM of the Winnipeg jets. And basically, they all come together and according to the report, all of these men have given wildly different accounts of what happened in that meeting. But the one thing we know is that nothing came out of that meeting immediately. Brett Aldrich stayed on the staff. He was with the team, not only through the Stanley Cup final, but was given a day with the Stanley Cup was given a Stanley Cup ring, was given his playoff bonuses. Yeah, I mean, the idea that this was all happening while they were on their way to winning the Stanley Cup Emily, how did that influence the decisions that were apparently not being made here? Seem to have influenced it a lot. There's a quote from Stan Bowman in the report, or basically, and I'm paraphrasing here in Joel glenville, the coach says we can't have this distract us. We are too close to the Stanley Cup. We can't address this now. And I think that tells you all you need to know about hockey culture where people will do anything and sacrifice anything to win the Stanley Cup. So all these team leaders knew Emily, did the players know? This is kind of a topic of controversy right now because there's some players on the team, like Nick boyon and Brent sobel who have come on the record and said, everybody knew. Kyle and his interview with TSN said, word spread around the locker room pretty quickly. You've said that some of your teammates after the fact started using homophobic slurs. How soon after the salt was that happening? Word spread pretty quick. I do believe that everybody in that locker room knew about it because of the comments were made in the locker room. They were made on the ice. They were made around the arena with all different people of all different backgrounds, players, staff, media in the presence. But there's other players who said they didn't know, or they didn't know all of the details. Patrick Kane still on the team said he didn't know John Doe was Kyle beach until that day he did the TSN interview. Yeah, I didn't know anything at the time. And, you know, even today, you know, Kyle came out as John Doe. That's the first time I knew that it was that I was him. So as far as the bullying and different comments, I don't remember any of that either. Or Jonathan tays. He was the captain in 2010 and still as the captain now said he didn't hear about the incident until the following training camp. And even then he still didn't hear all of it or the gory details as he put it. But according to the report, when Kyle did show up for that next training camp, there were some teammates who teased him and bullied him and said homophobic slurs on the ice towards him because of this allegation. And that's just really hard to hear. So.

"So Kyle beach is this top prospect in the Blackhawks organization Emily. In 2010. And he's reporting to the team allegations that video coach Brett Aldrich had sexually assaulted him. And it sounds like at the time, this is more than a decade ago now, nothing happened behind the scenes. In response to those accusations, but last week, we got this 100 plus page report, which the entire world got to see. Yeah, so we'll get into the events of 2010, but the long story short is nothing was done at the time. And then in May 2021, someone named John Doe, who we later find out to be Kyle beach files a lawsuit against the Blackhawks. And the only identifies as a former player, and he alleges that he was sexually assaulted by this video coach Brad Aldridge during the 2010 Stanley Cup run and nothing was done about it by senior leaders and his life was changed forever because of it. Yeah, so the report, who is a commission by, what did it cover exactly? So this lawsuit is filed in May 2021. And then the NHL comes to the Blackhawks and is like, look, this is serious. Do you want us to investigate it or do you guys want to investigate it? And I always have to make this note when I talk about these type of stories. It's important to note the NHL does not have a specific domestic violence policy that is different than any other professional major men's league in North America. So all of these things are always handled on a case by case basis. Basically the Blackhawks tell the NHL, we'll do a report, not in a cell says, okay, well, what are you going to do? How legit is it going to be? The Blackhawks are very legit. We're going to use this law firm named Jenner and block. We'll have this guy read Charlie. He's a former assistant U.S. attorney. He's the same guy that was a lead investigator and prosecutor for a former Illinois governor rod Blagojevich, and the NHL says, okay, that sounds legit. So the Blackhawks commissioned this report by Jenner and block, they interview a 139 people. And we just wait until we get the findings of this report. So the report is commissioned by the Blackhawks. What did they say they would do when the investigation was completed? So they promised full transparency when the report came out. And I know there was a lot of people skeptical saying, okay, when they put out this report, part of it's going to be redacted or they're not going to show all of it. But I was told last weekend, the Blackhawks got a call about Sunday and said, hey, the report is ready. On Monday, everyone reads the report and digests and figure out what's going on. And then by Tuesday, they announced that they're going to have a press conference and release the findings. So they knew it was coming. I do know that that call over the weekend was like, oh, wow, it's here. And let's go. Yeah, so midweek last week is when Kyle beach was named in public as John Doe, what prompted him to want to reveal his identity. Well, you know, the report, like I said, was released fully. And he wasn't named in the report, but there were some identifying details that some people believe did docks him such as what his weight was what his size was. The age at the time, some Internet loose could do their own math. But the other reason that he wanted to come forward because he felt vindicated. And he even said that in his interview with TSN, it was a sense of relief that it was no longer his word against everybody else's. I don't think I where we could have ever imagined what is going to come out of yesterday's press conference. And following it, just a great feeling of relief, vindication, and it was no longer my word against everybody else's. He felt like there was all these lies told in the media a lot of misinformation. Because a lot of things were made public, a lot of people were interviewed. And I really felt like there was a lot of lies told in the media and it was very special and important to me to have that truth come out yesterday. And for the truth to finally get out there for these investigators to corroborate what he's been saying with the Blackhawk senior management didn't take seriously. The thing that derailed his entire career was so cathartic and he felt that empowered him to come forward and share who exactly he was. Yeah, that interview Emily, with TSN, the Sports Network in Canada are siblings up north. That was October 27th. It was an interview that I don't know if I have a comparison point for in terms of a male player being this Frank about his alleged abuse. How would you describe what Kyle beach said? Brave is the first word I use. It was so courageous. He was unflinching, and he was direct. You know, he talked about the emotion he had felt when the report was released. And again, that sense of vindication. He cried, he smiled. He cried some more. Yesterday was a day of many emotions, I cried, I smiled. I laughed. I cried some more. Sorry. It's tough to recall these moments. But he also went into more details about what happened to him and the way he was made felt by these men in power who just dismissed him. And anyone who watched that interview haven't watched it, I so recommend, you walk away just saying this guy was failed so hard by hockey culture by people who were supposed to be leaders, but people who said that they were going to employ and take care of them. And it's just really devastating. So Kyle beach says, clearly, as you alluded to that his experience in this sport, the thing that he loved to do, his whole life, it was changed forever by what happened with Bret Aldrich. She at the time was an assistant coach with the Blackhawks. I'm curious how his interview was received not just by the public Emily, but by the sport by his colleagues in professional hockey in the NHL. I've talked to a lot of players in this past week Pablo and they're blown away. By Kyle's bravery by what he went through. And I think there's not necessarily a sense of reckoning, but maybe a sense of looking inwards saying, how could we be complicit in this also? And so I believe this to be a landmark interview because this is something that could change hockey culture forever because now we have a face to the name of these allegations. Now we have the real visual of the human collateral of these type of mistakes and seeing Kyle so bravely speak up, I think made a lot of players say, you know what, if I do see something going wrong, I can speak up. And it's okay. And that's actually the right thing to do. And as for the people in management, Emily, people have had to step down from high level high powered jobs around hockey because of this report now. What's happened with the people who were in Blackhawk's leadership back in 2010? Yeah, so the report comes out and the Blackhawks, ownership, which is rocky words and the son, Danny works with the team CEO. Basically realize no leaders from 2010 can still be within our organization. That's not okay. And the two men left are Stan Bowman, who is the GM and president of hockey ops. He's forced to resign an Isaac, the senior director of hockey operations also forced to resign. These are two guys, especially Stan who are viewed as the architects of three Stanley cups in Chicago. Right. And that was probably going to go to the Hall of Fame. He's the son of Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach of all time. So it's pretty stunning just to see him leave like this. Joel kuen bell, who is the coach in Chicago at the time, it was the coach of the Florida Panthers. They're undefeated. The best team in the league, I was told that Joel kuen bell believed that he was going to be okay. He gets called into a meeting with Gary bettman, his boss from the Florida Panthers, and basically the Panthers and the league, pressured him and said, it's not appropriate for you to be coaching right now. He resigns as well. The league finds the Blackhawks $2 million for what they call inadequate procedures and mishandling. And then rocky worked, the owner of the Blackhawks writes a letter to the Hall of Fame and asks for Brad Aldrich's name to be removed from the Stanley Cup..

"Clip from the from the closing press conference at the islanders lost the tampa bay lightning game seven mathew barzal with brock nelson At the podium really trying to keep it together and fighting back his emotions as best as he could never referencing veterans. Like andy greene see. I'm always interested in hearing young people talk about a stanley cup. Experience and older players talk about her stanley cup. Experience and the older players tend to generally cherish it more knowing how much it takes to get there and how long it takes and younger players. And we're talking to brad marchand hockey night in canada radio once After his bruins had won the stanley cup in two thousand eleven and it very much felt like in his voice in his mind. He thought well we're gonna win like three or four more of these things and he still still chasing it. Hearing mathew barzal talk the way that he did already at the age of twenty four is young guy he understands how getting there is really hard and he's been close a couple of times and listen to his voice in how he talks. You almost get the sense that he's wondering and my ever going to get this close again. What did you think of ourselves presser. You asked if he was coming of age. I don't know if i agree with that. I think it's just who he is. I think he really cares. Oh for sure this whole thing. You know you battle with your coach. Sometimes you know trotz has battled to get more out of them barzal. I'm sure his battle with trotz before it doesn't mean they both don't care or they don't have the best in mind for each other. It just means that trotz has enormous belief in what barzal can become and sometimes like a father with a son you have to discipline them in ways to make them get to that next level brazil to me. I loved watching him. These playoffs he competed. I never questioned his competitive ability or willingness to compete. I think there were times where he was so creative. The other honors in the ice didn't know what to do with it. And i think that's kind of what happened. Is i saw a lot of times. That teams against him tried to take away his passing options like he went in and he'd make a great entry or recreate some room and then it was almost like they said. You think you're passing anyone else. You're not passing the anyone else. And one of the things. People have told barzal as he has to be more selfish because people see that they see. He's a pass first guy and as a result if you take away his options sometimes. He's not as dangerous. But i think he's worked hard to improve all of that. I thought he competed a ton. Oy and i saw a guy who was devastated in the moment. So i don't think he mature that answer shows a maturity or anything like that. I just think it shows how much he cares whether we ever doubt that. Barzal wants to be an islanders proud to be nylander. He clearly really loves his teammates that he went out of his way to talk about guys. Like josh bailey. And andy greene. Who might never get this chance again like to me. It's not about him. It's about the group and I mean the way he played showed me how much he cared. And i'm sure he's going to be thinking about that one that hopped over his stick killer And that's that's tough. It's not your fault it's nothing you did but it just sits with you. Yeah ice man. I really you look at it and you say it's it's late night period and that's ice. That's not you know. I really thought after game five. If the islanders god through the first twenty minutes relatively unscathed they were going to win. The game and i just remembered the intermission thinking at the first remission thinking. The islanders are going to win this and of course. They gave up the shorthanded goal and and they lost. But i i gotta tell you. There was a time after one period. I said that's exactly what the allders needed. And they're going to win this game. And and i think know that even though they didn't get a lot of chances the lightning were as good as they were. I'm betting they felt the same thing after game. Five where they were down three nothing after one they thought if they get out of the first period scoreless they're gonna find a way to win We should point out as well. I know or reality of sports and you just deal with them. But all that without anders lee a remarkable achievement for the For the islanders at various times that we've talked plenty about mathew barzal. We've talked about ryan pool ach And the shot. Eller talked about adam. Pelech you know the emerging you know Sneaky norris trophy candidate Whose names should pop up on some ballots. Who else stood out for you from this. Entire islanders not justice series against tampa but from the entire run as far back. As you wanna go maybe even into the regular season who jumped out for you mayfield. And not just because of everything that happened in game six. I just think that scott mayfield as come from. You're you're almost disrespecting him by saying nowhere but nowhere to become a really effective player a really good player. Nobody thought he would be what he's turned into and he's turned into a heck of a player. I think mayfield would be that guy for me. I think beauvillier is a really improved player. But i if. I had to say one person i would say mayfield. So what now then for the new york. Islanders number of unrestricted free agents The trade deadline guys cow paul travis. Travesty jack a mainstay on the fourth line. In cases ezekiel unrestricted. Free agent there as well We talked about mentioned. Andy greene a couple of moments ago. He's a ufa some restricted Including ilias sarokin pollock Anthony pavilion michael cole. What happens now with the islanders. Well i called lula morello earlier on saturday. He told me everything he was to do. Starting with who's getting q. Oh yeah that sounds like glue for sure. So what are you saying. He told me every step of the way. Think you've ever said on this podcast. Great so there's some people who drove off the road hearing that. Well i look at this way. I would be surprised if they didn't have a good idea. Sarokin a restricted free agent right. Yes and after. He came over from russia. I would be very surprised if they didn't have a decent idea of what his second contract was going to look like. So that's one thing to me. The most important guy you have to deal with is paddock. He's a restricted free agent with our bright. He's one year away from unrestricted free agency. He's.

"Awful. You mentioned although the the players on this team and you go from you know kucherov. Two point to sara lee and stamkos etc. Right down to. Ross coleman like the thing that i love about tampa and do with all their men as well even like man erik. Cernak has a very definite end deliberate role on this team mike. Everybody has something that they do right like. Everybody has a job there like a bunch of worker dogs and they all have their assignment and they do it like. It's a marvel. And i'm building this up like david versus goliath. Your house montreal going to do this but the more you see tampa the more. You can't help but just being flat out impressed with this squad it'd be a good final. I'm really going to enjoy it. I i. i'm really looking forward to this final. Just make it go long. I would hate for it to get to this point. Because how hockey would this be elliott to get to this point only to see a sweep like i don't want to give this mantra. It's not going to be a sweet. I know i hope. It's i hope it's i just don't want this. If this mantra canadians story is going to end in the final. And they don't make. I will sleep for a week and guell jammies of his a sweep leading the gravity of that just sinking for one second away. Do you think. I was gonna listen to that garbage. Podcast tweeted of course. Of course you're not interested in quality. griffin's podcast talked to the gas for our. Yes all about the. Griffin's may experience there oliver's chance you'd love it you learn a thing or two along the way too. Yeah but i will sleep and gwen jammies for at least a week if it's a sweep. Oh man i can just see i can. Just i'm going to drop my tweet and save it. Send for the jammies hashtag go. Griffin's go if there aren't well jammies. I will just take won. T shirts and i will take a red marker and i will spell wealth on it w e l f go. Yeah yeah ok well done i. Can we all tell you when to western. I see now. I'm split because i'd love to see you do that for two. I don't want this to end and a hockey fashion like the hockey story for the stanley. Cup playoffs is you can get to the final as an underdog but generally are not gonna win just because it is such a grind and by the time you get there. You're as an underdog you're just exhausted because you're not quilt built for the stanley cup final. Whatever that means. It's just the history of hockey. I just hope that it doesn't end now. If it does for the montreal canadians either way. I just hope this one is a long series And with that will kick it off. Elliott's all set. I'm all warmed up. Welcome to thirty one thousand podcast presented by the gmc sierra eighty four. Can you just talk about What you're feeling right now and is it feelings that you have yourself. Is it for your teammates. Both i think it's Just for everyone. You know sucks in mac. This point short again guys like bales and greener and guys. You know indian guy you know. I got a few more years but guys are wanna win for. Those guys hurts Hertzian those guys in the locker room afterwards. Just did we just hear slash c mathew barzal age in front of us elliott friedman..

"I wanted to start this podcast with a statement on a serious topic. The chicago blackhawks. Some of you have asked whether it's on twitter direct message direct message on instagram. Why i didn't address this topic earlier. I certainly inouye doubt the excellent reporting by tony arnold of wbz radio in chicago. Who broke the story the athletics katie's strang anyone else. It's pretty simple though. I wanted to spend a few extra days doing my own work and my own research just to be sure about a couple of things plus felt using the opening of the podcast and blog. Which will drop monday as a much better place to coherently outlined my thinking instead of on twitter. Things just get mangled sometimes on twitter. There's always what you see and hear out there and what you don't see or hear out there in stories like this one. There's always things that reporters our sources can't or don't print or say and i wonder what those things could be. The accusations are ugly. And what i want to make clear. Is that the people. I spoke to bent over backwards. They took pains to support. Paul vincent the skills coach from two thousand ten who reported the abuses senior management. For that reason. I feel very strongly that however the legal process concludes the blackhawks must come clean and detail what happened. I believe the team and its employees have been told to keep quiet. Not say a word. It's led to a lot of rumors about what punishment could happen but right now. It's all speculation as was several other reporters. The nhl declined comment to me. It's not unusual. It can happen. And i've learned also don't do anything when the league says no on something. What stood out to me was commissioner bill. Daly statement to the athletic. He wrote quote. We have been in contact with the club regarding the matter but there is no ongoing investigation. We do not have any further comment at this time. Dailies a smart lawyer. He includes nothing without reason. No ongoing investigation does that mean no investigation at all there will be an investigation or there already was one. It's open ended. And i wonder at this time. Will that says to me. Don't assume there won't be any statement or consequences sometime in the future. My question is the timeline. Generally when something is in litigation results are slow. If you've ever dealt with the law it doesn't move quickly and defendants aren't going to give away anything. That's going to hurt them in court but and this is a big to me but we are at a time in the nhl. Calendar were hockey. Operations is front and center gm. Stan bowman would be active. During both expansion and entry draft preparations there would be multiple media availabilities. He and the blackhawks will not be able to avoid tough questions. Also commissioner gary bettman will undoubtedly be asked about this during his annual pre stanley cup. Game one conference monday night. No matter the eventual outcome. There must be clarity. We need to know what happened here so we can make sure it never happens again. Nothing else will be accepted and nothing else will be acceptable. Jeff do you have anything. You'd like to add further. What elliott just said. I to agree. The blackhawks need to come clean about what happened. I've covered junior hockey for most of my professional career and stories. Like this as we all know have been all too common. It's ruined careers and more importantly it's destroyed lives. I grew up in toronto Stories of sexual abuse of maple leaf gardens were both disgusting. And also heartbreaking. The published details in this case are horrifying and revolting and any guilty party needs to be dealt with in a serious and significant way. This is at all levels as well. The legal process in this case will play itself out as elliot mentioned and we shouldn't be surprised at any lack of transparency. Along the way that's a legal reality and we may have to be settled with this not arriving at a conclusion that gives anyone satisfaction or any sense of closure either but like to ask you to consider what this means hockey right now. I don't need to remind you. This is a huge story with enormous implications. Here's something i do know. There are ugly truths hidden in the history of this game. And as much as we insist that the blackhawks make good. I would also put forward that other teams and the league along with the players. Association need to do the same and go through a thorough review of how they operate and how they've operated. Some are already doing this. Some stories exist in whispers and will always remain a secret while others are more out in the open an obvious choose not to see them and we all know the conversations are coming. Nhl executive vp. Kim davis joined the nhl telling everyone around her to quote. Get comfortable being uncomfortable for me. That means questioning what we celebrate and cherish in the game of hockey at encourage everyone who hears us to think about the people that say trophies are named. after who were they. What did they stand for. What did they do outside of shuffling along a block of ice. Learn the history of this game how it started why it started and who's been involved along the way and also this is a big one. Consider the statues outside arenas and ask yourself while the player may deserve to be. There does the person there's an old saying. Great men are seldom goodman. That's true in life and sports and certainly true in heart. Okay elliott the stanley cup. Final is all set. It's the defending stanley cup. Champion tampa bay lightning and as. We all predicted the montreal canadiens. Now we dealt with the halves on on the last podcast tampa defeats the islanders in game. Seven one. Nothing other shadowed for andrei vasilevskiy will deal with the The followed now for the islanders. And what's next for lou lamoriello squad but it's tampa it's it all gets underway on monday. Open the podcast. Appear with your thoughts again. I want to say they could very clear that my montreal friends have told me i am not allowed to pick the canadian and they would prefer. I spent the rest of my time dumping on the canadians because it seems to work for them. Look i got to say it's amazing. It's it's an incredible story it really is. I still in some ways can't believe it but again they've earned their way hear people say oh. This is a fluke. It's the canadian division. I don't want to hear any of that garbage. If you win three rounds to make the stanley cup final you have earned your place in the in the final the. I don't care what anybody else says. The canadians have earned their way to be here. And and roger suzie. I'm doing this for you. And all the montreal fans they are no longer islanders light. They are islanders extra strength. They wine new york gave it everything they had came up agonizingly short they are now islanders extra strength and to me kucherov. Health is a big deal. But the thing tamp is they can play you any way you wanna play uptempo up temple the you wanna play tight and tough and grinding dirty. They can play you that way to you. Know it's interesting to me like garry. Galley and i had a big conversation. I pointed out in game seven the first intermission of game seven of islanders tampa that the islanders gave kucherov a more genteel ride than i thought he was gonna. I thought he was going to get some extra shots you know. Whenever he got engaged they give him the extra bombed the elbow. The crosscheck here in there. They weren't doing that. And gary thought he wondered if the islanders were told or were warned by even by their own coaches or anyone else. If you guys go after kucherov they're going to be looking for it. Montreal will not be like that. They will be harder on him. Look i think vassilev skin price. Great goaltending.

"Let's check in on the Cuban A via zoom with the Blackhawks winger. A brand and how do you sum this one up? Obviously felt very chippy and kind of gone off the rails that time. But what's the mood like after the locker room in this one? Um, I mean, we can't give up that many goals. I think it starts with It's not being good enough on without the park, I think Times were really good, but at times we way weren't and they made us pay and Kind of summed up the game a little bit. Do you feel like it was tough sitting on that national serious for three days and kind of watching all these teams in the central pickup home points while you guys were idle and did not play a role in in kind of mentality, wise feeling like this playoff run is kind of slipping away here. Uh, I don't know I was. I think everyone in the dressing room knew what we need to do. And Needed to win. And, um Came out tonight, and I didn't think We were 100% for the full 60 minutes. Like I said at times were good. Times we weren't and they made us pay. Next question will come from Phil Thompson with the Chicago Tribune. And another. You guys have had your reasons for being reluctant to fight. But with that important for Murphy in, it's a door off tol mix it up tonight. Yeah, that was good. I think shows that we care. I'm sticking up for teammates. That's a huge thing, and that's what brings the group really close. So I'm good on them. It was Think the guys like that as well. Did you personally feel about it? Because you know there's a debate of when they get into fights. It takes care of its availability off the ice. Where do you stand on that? Um, yeah, I mean, um Sticking up for a teammate, though I think that's the one way you gotta look at it, and that should give a boost for everyone on the bench toe to know they've got to pick up their roles a little bit for the next five minutes. Or, however many minutes it is so. It wasn't I mean, like I said, I think it was good. I think we needed. We needed a little bit of that and give us a little bit of a boost at times. Yes, It's not the best that we can't use them, but they're sticking up for a team and like I said earlier, that gives us Everyone knows they're out there for us and battling for us and I'll just pick it up a little bit, and we'll take over for them. Training. That's all the questions we have for you tonight. Thank you. Brandon Hagel after scoring his eighth goal of the year to put the Hawks on the board, bring them to within 21 in that first period on a perfectly ah, perfectly set up play. For Brandon Hagel to get his get that eighth gold. I'll tell you what, Not many guys would try scoring that way s O give Hagel a lot of credit going out over his skis. But nevertheless, it looks like a slap shot in the box score. So he is up. Tonto doesn't matter. They matter on the year, maybe one or two over the course of a year long Illustrious career and you'll take him. You're not gonna you're not good for once, when I shot it in my own net, because steady Belfour against that I don't know if we're gonna hear from him. But Dylan Strome returning live obviously a topic of discussion in the pregame show tonight about what he needed to do back in his Usual comfort zone in terms of position, although you know, Jeremy said it and I get the sense that Dylan's the same type of guy, you know, he can express it, but he's he's not gonna, you know, be a pain about it, but He got himself back in the lineup. Will we circle back to that? In just a moment cause wife Kala Naka for scoring his fourth gold this season is downstairs and about to address some questions from the media. Bo quest to an injury and then Murphy's out for 17. How much of a challenge is that against any team, let alone Tampa to be playing with four guys? Yeah, I guess Challenge for sure. But I think A zoo, a competitors, a player and the defense in the night on that team. I think it's something that you just you look forward to you. You want to play more minutes? You wanna be ah, part of that. So it's It's unfortunate to see you know both you get hurt, and we'd love to have mercy as well. But I think As the competitors hockey player. You want to be out there? What's the mindset going forward? These last having games? It looks like the playoffs or our daughter out of reach. So what's the focus now? I don't think our focus changes. I think we still come in. We take You know every every game by game and shift my shift. I think I mean, we have to look too far ahead all year, and I don't think we're going to start thinking about that stuff. Now. The next question will come from Phil Thompson with the Chicago Tribune. Yeah. It seems like the lightning have been after. Murphy for a while. Was it important for him to the answer the bill, especially under those circumstances. Um Yeah, I don't know. I think you know a czar team it Z. Good to see Murph stick up for I think it was a young mike Hardman that took a check there. And, uh, you know, we love that we You know, that's Not everyone can do that. It takes a lot of guts to stick up for a guy and s So yeah, it's I don't think your son that he had to do but I think as a team, it's Z. You know, we love to see that And then for you, I believe you. You have three points in the last three games. Correct me if I'm wrong. Just tell me what do you think about your progress and what you're looking to accomplish over these few remaining games. Um yeah, Just continue to do my thing. Um Continuing to try toe. Be better defensively. I think that's something I can continue to get good at. And probably always will, But, um, yeah, I just continue to grow. Continue, Tonto. I to establish myself these last six games. Don't question will come from Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun Times. Hey, Wyatt, Obviously never great night when you give up six goals, excluding the empty netter, What do you think was sort of the reason for the defense of struggles? I just think they were harder down low. They're harder, if out of our net. Couple times we lost our checks. They be us the inside and that was a difference of the game. I think you know we had our chances offensively and obviously on the power plays as well. But I think you know, like they're kind of known for that. They're really good in front of the offensive net, but, yeah, I think we have beat inside and they were just better in front of the net tonight, but us Thank you..

"And he's making. I think ten or eleven million dollars so i i think i've been for a while because we can have been bashing ben a lot and you keep bashing been if you want to. That's up to you. But i'm going to back off on bashing ben because i hope that this move to center going to help him and you know maybe realize its full potential. He's seventeen better seventeenth. What salary okay. That's still pretty high. And he is the highest paid dallas. Start knowing it might actually like a hundred thousand higher. Okay so but still i. I think a layoff jamie benn for a little bit and i think he's played excellent the past two weeks especially he. He's starting to contribute offensively more yes. He only had two goals and two assists in thirteen games. But we talk about the cap hit in. That's always focused on we. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes in how he's leading this team or the other things that he's doing you know physically. He is dominating. You don't have to pay. I'm million dollars for that. As you say your head. You're not paying nine million dollars for that. So i'm saying need. Let's tom galati on here and see what he says. Hey tom we're spending nine and a half million dollars on a player on your captain feel about that. So i'm gonna jump off of that for for a little bit but anyways Like we started on face off in. We somehow ended on with demon. Been anyways back to face offs in this game Tonight the stars completely dominated the face off circle even better than the blackhawks did on tuesday. So we won fifty eight percent of the faceoffs compared to forty two percent for the chicago blackhawks so that that needs to be a staple in the stars game and especially when You know we're on special teams either in the offensive zone or in the defensive zone and that showed in this game.

"Coming over. Hi. Want dogs like dogs? Black cod. The Blackhawks are here like that Greek, and it's 6 30 Black hawks on he plays tonight was looking at a betting line. Because that's what we do now, and the Blackhawks are not figuring to do well in the NHL this year. It's going to be a tough year for them, but you know, you don't know until that's that's why they play the Games Day that is, and that's that's good. John and the other thing is that sometimes that puts a chip on your shoulder and they have some guys with pride on this team who I think are seeing that and hearing it and I don't know if ultimately it's going, that's going to make a dramatic effect on their won loss record. They understand what's what's going on here, but it certainly Hey, you got to think they're gonna play hard every night because everyone says that they're not gonna win. Hey, let's lace him up and see what happens, eh? Hey, that's really good. Let's go play. Some hockey was really good. Sending out of the background sounds of the House of Representatives is they are preparing to vote on the impeachment of the president. We're dialing in on that now and then. And it looks like some of the votes are in. But not many. We'll just dial back in there now and again to keep you posted on what's happening in your congress today. I got this text message moment ago. Hey, John Williams. I spoke to you on the air the other day about the riots at the Capitol and mice perspective as a senior in the villages in Florida. This was the woman who was in tears She lives in the village is that famous giant senior Shangrila in Florida and she was so upset to see so many of her neighbors getting on Busses and going to the capital, the neighbor that they share keys with, you know, Hey, if my door's locked, you've got a key and so forth, they're very close her her immediate neighbor. Was one of the people that went there and she was in tears and she was shaking with Anxious nous when she called us She says. Well, now the five or so busloads of people Who went are saying they only went there to pray. But they did march to the capital, John and my next door neighbor who I got my key back from went with two guns despite pictures of being on the bus. He's now trying to spend it. He says he didn't even go. John Williams. You need to read audio books. You sold me on that Matthew McConaughey book. It's not deep reading. It's just quips and stories and a little bit of philosophy like live life to its fullest man. And the title of the book is Green Lights, and he talks about what green lights are, you know? Go proceed. Don't look back. He is a 11 thing I will say about him. Having read half the book so far is that I do think he does know who he is. He knows how lucky he is. He knows how good looking he is. I wouldn't describe the book is self deprecating, but there does seem to be a certain awareness. And while I'm not a big fan of Matthew McConaughey, the actor per se I I'm enjoying some of his stories. I'm still not sure I believe them all. Hey, John Williams. Both of those books you mentioned. Barack Obama's and Matthew McConaughey's are available on audible. It's great listening because they are narrating it. It's like they're telling you the story. My sister Jeanne told me about green lights, She said. You really gotta listen. Listen to this book mechanic. He reads it. And she's digging it That way. I read a little of it to you, but either way, if you want to get away from it all you can do that, or you can listen to speed.
