One of the Boston Area's Latino Immigrant Cities Is the Epicenter of the COVID-19 Crisis in Massachusetts
"I I. You know I'm a journalist. I cover a lot of national issues but I'm also you know house live in the Boston Metro area on the south side of the city. You're up on the north side. Chelsea is the for me for a lot of laughing. Estonians Lead Latino Immigrants Section of Metro Boston in a lot of ways I looking at the statistics and seeing happening Can you explain the situation to people that don't under? You know our our our listening to this. The first time outside of Boston and put it into the context. Because I it's the numbers are just startling. They are they are really got it all and unfortunately for those folks who are joining to me and Chelsea a one point eight Square Mile Community. And as you stated it's done in that community that is just north of Boston and he had been an officially declared as having the worst outweighs a whole the nineteen cases the entire state so the numbers that we're looking at is as of the site and again the information. It's teaching still constantly by the time that speaking. I'm pretty sure he's number. Got Even higher but as a black knight part infections late is that a hundred and six per every ten thousand and the so and just to put that into perspective. The member I mentioned we're one eight hundred blasting. The are the second third largest city in the state to just imagine coupling the fact that we have working families that are living in apartments just up to fifteen people in three bedrooms treatment and on top of that we have families that in the fast economic signs have to three jobs just to make an and one of those jobs are either virtually gone so the folks are unemployed and on and on the other end of the also have other guys it in fourteen essential employees. These are folks who are in the front lines. They are working at Dunkin donuts. They're looking at market basket. Starch working at the services area so you have for that are essential workers who it's impossible for them to physically defense and the people that are trying to ask everyone to follow but you follow the physical distance so they stack you You can find it the and then you have other fault somehow completely knocked your job no income and on top of that you know we have been for. Decades has experienced environmental injustice shoes So wearing industrial city that has a high volume of chuck traffic and We're have coastal cities in the air force. So you couple of all of this and later on off and you have the perfect time for a five thousand of of this Epidemic what are your constituents saying. What are you hearing the story before because I do? WanNa talk about the state response in the federal response but I also wanted here with the voices of the community of the same cause. I do feel like for me being here in Boston. You know covering what's happening in the Boston area. I'm not hearing those voices. So what are those voices telling you? And what can you share? Because I think that's the numbers that you reach like those comparible your city. I mean this is I. Just. I'm just. It's mind boggling to think about this so sure from what you're telling you first before we get into sort of the response so let's see now the the experience there's been fighting there's a lot of exciting from my residents. I cannot tell you how many folks call me and me and to me. Facebook packages telling me of how they have been confirmed with survivor. They have been unemployed for over a year. I'm sorry for over a month. They've been unemployed for over a month. They have confirmed that the case they do not have any money to go shopping even before John for their children. She has no idea how they're going to get money. And that's one of the biggest concerns here you know. And not and not only my family's on the ensuing destroy them the trauma and shrimp farm our dispatchers who are taking these calls and taking these cases are also go into emotional breakdown when they hear The Need for money for the The the need for some families can't see them doing their chiefs. Get Emergencies Actors. They their kids. Which is true of freight is only out and spreading the virus. So again like it's heartbreaking and doing the best that we check on our end but we need more veteran wild and the city is under voluntary. Twenty four seven lockdown right now. Is that correct? That's our people Our understanding the the I mean are people you know following it or I mean I I feel Zaidi and then getting that. It's kind of like Whoa. I mean I feel like bishop happens like it literally happened. You know and you know people are falling Massachusetts. Although I think you're right I think when you have more people that are essential workers that are working in industries. That are feeding us in our. You know doing other things and taking public transportation and coming back to dense population. All the ingredients were there and it seemed like no one you know. We shouldn't have been surprised as as people in Boston that this is. What's happening People now you know I I think taking it seriously put tyrod or their language issues. Are Their immigration. Now is like what what did give me a more of a picture because I know there's a response. I never thought about the response that I I also think people don't understand can there? Yeah you know. There's y'all yeah people Boston. So a little bit more the for their cellular energy so and then you go back to that The leasing why city manager trump and see no decided. She's making twenty four seven because don't WanNa be political. Be and fog maybe blowing up all their population right. So that's one of the key things right so I know that other things they're doing is that they see waking the curfew. They are giving them a ticket for two hundred dollars is. Here's the penalty for chased. But again you're getting community that is real incomes who barely has money to afford luxuries is they're out of their jobs for listing want. It should be picketing folks three hundred dollars penalty for being outside and not falling curfew hours. So what we're focusing on is coming in. He emphasizing that and and I thank you for stage to continue this important dialogue which is getting very serious and as much as we are. Afraid to be alarming. The numbers are alarming. People are dying I last night because nothing that and we want that number to stop but he then you know my mom personally. She's a factory worker. My mom works. I think we'll hop factory and she has to go to work every day. Actually thirty in and you know she. One example of the other example appear in in Chelsea family has to choose between. You might go to work so I can get money and food on the table and and save a little bit team. Nice Munch or stay and a lot of folks who have to work as mentioned the happy. The public transportation is virtually honestly suitable to be physically spent in the

"Just waiting for it was at like the today secret work. Ah I tell you man. Literally there is a video of something getting blown up and people are just like Yup. That was the Black Knight satellite and they leaked it us The the thing with this is the story goes gone and on on the talk about how the Aztecs Saad and worshipped at Philip K Dick Getting communications from Epsilon Nu Otis Philip K. Dick's another name. Among names in the allergy world navy ships and planes detecting it and picking it up on radar. I mean unfortunately we just had to pick a spot and say there it is what do you think what's your over under. What's sure thoughts could something like? This exists and if it did what would it been here for if it was real what do you think were they. Put it here for well. Originally when we we were going to be doing this episode. I started doing some research on Black Knight and I ended up watching two hours of Martin Lawrence and I was like what is okay. Then I realized It wasn't a two thousand one movie. This is actual conspiracy theory that I found that and My overall consensus is is that it was and SDS mission with their blanket. The just got loose use during a spacewalk. If there had been a probe here for thirteen thousand years why what what would what would some outside what ever why would they put their anything Just to keep an eye on like Oh. Here's a civilization but thirteen thousand years ago. I think that's an ice age. I think thinking thank you didn't out. Yeah Yeah so we had you know SID and Whatever that frigging trying to think of the movie is as their names? So My joke is lost Dennis O.. Vian and the NFL's Would have been gone that they would have done. The Soviet NHS were last year about fifty thousand years ago neanderthals about one hundred thousand years ago so we would have just been us some interesting on. Was I think watching Joe Rogan or something. I can't remember who had on there as as a guest but they were like. Hey have you checked out. The video of there's like is in these apes like wild apes in that are starting to use tools now because they see humans using tools and her saying that basically apes have entered entered into like the stone age no shit and so like they're evolving somewhat or evolving somehow so Planet of the apes the they say fourteen thousand eight hundred years ago. The humid Humid period begins. North America Erica. We had the glacial period was ten to thirteen thousand years ago. That was the last glacial period. We were still hunter gatherers. Twelve thousand in years ago the domestication of the goat happen. So yeah we were. We were living in caves and running around not far off of those. Yeah though I mean we were a little bit better than the Stone Age Primates that's a scary thing though I don't it's scary but yeah I saw video. Yesterday I was scrolling through the Internet. You know all of Youtube video of like a chimpanzee checking came out like he was on a cell phone looking at pictures on instagram and stuff like he was using it properly clicking on pictures clicking back scrolling down clicking another picture sure here's watching videos of like other chimpanzees that's pretty impressive. What you're doomed? We heard fucking do we. We had a good run chimpanzee apocalypse. -Talian man I tell you this thing was real and it's in orbit for thirteen thousand years. I mean it would have been a couple of things. It brings up so many so many fun ways of thinking like would they have known where it was just there to see. See where we were going to go. Was it someone who seated us. Was it something that just checking on the earth to see when we reach a certain periods of they can come conquer harass. What is what is its purpose? I mean if we would have to know what the purpose of the probe is number one before we could really say one way or what it's for and that's a hard thing for bill swallow sometimes when you don't know if it was true but the problem is we have so much grasping at straws people are are taking bits and pieces. We'll test us this and lapasset this and Dunkin said this and we have this photo and they're just putting things together that don't really fit in in my book and I put. I put zero weight behind the Black Knight satellite but knowing that this is a black knight satellite April twenty seventeen if the luminosity did shoot a rocket I it was probably just a flesh wound us. Let's play let's my thoughts on it and that's my horrible horrible analogy to to end this episode. What really matters what really matters is what are fair listeners? Think if you guys want to let us know please let us know what you think GonNa Stare nation just.

"Slow on the uptake. There but yeah the Black Knight satellite and when you brought this up. It's one that You you said you WANNA do it. And since we talked about it so many people have written us and said please do the Black Knight satellite interesting. It's an interesting topic name number one. Yeah always wonder where the name came from. And I guess we don't know do we literally. It's one of those things where you just kind of popped up spoiler alert You know if you guys know something that I don't know let us know but most people just said that it. It just started being called that one day and they don't really know where that came from breaking it down a little bit so the Black Knight satellite the story say it's a retrograde orbiting satellite. Like we said that's it's been up there for they say thirteen thousand years and we're going to tell you a little bit in the future here of why they say it's been for thirteen thousand year Deanne retrograde metro grade when the. You always hear that the this isn't that is in retrograde when they're talking about astrology just means that it's moves in the opposite direction that the earth spend so earth's spin in one way and they say the Black Knight Satellite is spinning the other way now spinning tax. Something interesting because it also stops one of the places that they've they've said they've gotten pictures of it was floating above Florida in geosynchronous orbit for trial before a office. That's literally one of the places that it was investigating probably probably get tips and tricks mature. Motoman if it's retrograde though like you would have to be still being powered Howard because nothing can go for thirteen thousand years and retrograde. No absolutely like so you can geosynchronous easy put it up there you get there. Everyone small they they the boost this and that and the other and some of them stick and there's another situation where they say it's actually not there. We'll get into that too. It's not in ritual grade. That's just a mistake but That one would actually make a little more sense. I'll tell you about that one. But it's funny you say that we have thousands of satellites in orbit. The current count is over a hundred thousand satellites the first one coming from the Soviet Union back in nineteen fifty seven killed sputnik there is connor thousands house of those there's also a lot of space debris every time they shoot up in when they were going these shuttle missions and stuff things get lost or they would jettison things they'd say they. Oh I dropped my hammer or A. This came loose that came loose. That stuff goes into orbit now not only does stuff going to orbit that stuff is moving thousands thousands of miles an hour when going around things which make space travel getting away from their kind of dangerous when you guys were launching stuff. Yeah editing all that crap into into consideration it's like basically working on a shooting range. I said there's thousands of their we get directions directions from them. We get entertainment from them we TV shows and things like that We get our our signals from for cellphones or being around from them spy picks come from and that's one of the big things is they use them for for spying on stuff. The list goes on. It's crazy the amount of use that we get out of the satellites we have you think a satellites up there and they're not to be seen but you can actually see them sometimes passing overhead for sure. I've actually I've seen one before. I've looked up and his lifetimes are used to work out the space center. It's like out there in the woods. So there's like no like ambient light you know any kind of light pollution so you look up. Yeah and you can have saw saw one time just shooting across. USO awesome because it goes so fast now they say the largest satellite in space is actually international space station because it's in it's in the low earth orbit it's still in our atmosphere and there are times I've seen I've never seen it myself but there are videos you can see with the naked is sometimes up up in the sky and that is crazy and it's it's big it's massive So yeah and one day hopefully doesn't crash down on us and then kill all. Well you see you you you work there though like you're saying so you did you. Were you ever involved when you work there. Were they launching satellites headlights. Because I know that Elon. Musk now is doing all those satellites that are dealing with cell phones and five G. Right. Yeah I have because I got laid off. Okay I set up my spacex you thanks for bringing everything down Brent these ring so lately lately I've been kind of bitter to I haven't been paying close attention but I know it was coming up and They have like the deer moon project which is coming up. They have the What's what's that other one? The big silver one. They're building came ice the their own shuttle thing. Yeah yeah yeah the ones coming up if the only Missions the whole time I've been there has been like all satellite missions for other companies and right and We had that one that was supposed to go up to help with with facebook and the nest and one that we actually lost on the pad during the static fire and so you know. It's kind of unfortunate funny. I said they're they're launching. All these new ones up for are going to be see for five G.. That's probably going to be another coming up episode kids. That's the the current bogeyman that people really jumping onto is five G.. And the startling to Yulon starling well well. Yeah everything's going to kill us and everything's evil which is probably true. So let's just the world we live in right right now but going back to the black. That backstory is so ominous. Let's try to unpack it if we can The first first thing they're talking about with that was radio signals. They surround us all the time. In radio's been around since Marconi invented in the eighteen nineties. And it's everywhere but here's the thing what if some of them don't come from us but from elsewhere and that's the way we're going to go with the story we now inner one guy you've probably heard of tack Nikola. Boom Boom Tesla uses official name. Name I didn't know that was that was on his on on his birth certificate. You've heard of you know what he's just a a name among names when you say Tesla outside of the Cars Elon. Musk like what do you think of anything. Nikola Tesla Tesla coil I mean and Like Free Energy Yup absolutely like just. It's it's so funny people say and even people who don't know about I'm like Oh that guy was crazy literally it. It brings up these visions of mad scientists in my mind. Or that's where it goes. I'm pretty sure he was like on the spectrum. I think I don't know if anybody's officially said that. But just in hearing about him he didn't like women. He was married to pigeon literally he loved animals. More than people like that is absolutely spectrums of Super Smart Awkward Awkward and You know absolutely but this Serbian bad boy. That's what he likes to go by with his friends. He was electrical engineer and he produced works. Switch explored the idea of radio and wireless transmissions. We've actually talked to the show before back in the day way back. Then he actually made a radio controlled boat and it awesome. Those things that the military is looking at How could we weaponize this way back then but in eighteen ninety nine he reportedly intercepted accepted a signal that was unlike any of the natural sources from Earth? Such is electrical storms or anything like that already been investigated in his experiments comments so he used the scientific method to figure out where they came from the end instead. He announced that these regular signals regulars in their regular regular coming in must be coming from intelligence outside of earth and he just hypothesized. They're coming from Mars. That makes more sense right. Light logical. Jump right that's where you go to attack. I think that's that's good. That's where my brain goes. Yeah I mean the closest neighbor Mars so make sense check it but it's it's what's he actually wrote about it in in some some papers and just nonchalantly said Yeah. I intercepted these things. Things they're coming from Myers e he never claimed to have heard signals from satellite orbiting Earth. Though that's not what he said but peeps now they claim he was actually listening to the transmission from the the well. Guess what Black Knight Satellite Yeah and they just thought that that's probably what it was being. They tied it together. It's one of those things are like. How can we get Tesla and this one did that? He found found that of all. Yeah he found all those years ago he just didn't didn't realize it Mars. What an idiot I wiped them out way before that what nothing anyway well actually WanNa hear that again? Can you hear about that because then it downgrades the show that you'll love letters my fans know the truth you know encourage him. I get it so you would think though in your mind. This guy's super smart he thinks if he's intercepting transmissions from another world he probably check into that Shit. You'd probably try to figure it out wrong. It'd be wrong if you though that Tesla never tried to repeat his observations. He said that he had other matters. That took priority over at Jesus. What the hell was this guy? Working on uh-huh Mars yet ain't got them make sense either. Yeah Right Pretty Limit Response Response to such a significant claim. Not If you knew the shit he was up to solid chance at being true this guy was yeah and and then when he dies as we know the The confiscated his right outs and books. Or there's so much up in the air with him but I don't know so we. Apparently the American government got a hold of his notes and then there was like a pissing match between like I don't know FBI and CIA and who gets the notes it's in every knows where they are now his family. Well I'm sure someone does. Someone above are prey great. Somebody's looking at them and giggling and like like what is Mister Burns from like the simpsons just like like I somebody looks like Detro- from you fools rules for some reason I'm clamping my fingers together like you can see going to act to that but you know people getting signals from it and even spotty it it. It didn't stop there the tech. Let's go to break recruit but when when we come back we're going to continue the time line of the Black Knight satellite and actually gets weirder. All myths have many versions and variations for this episode. We've selected those we feel are the most dramatic and entertaining and supplemented them with additional research into ancient Greek traditions because mythology comes from oral tradition. Trump wants to restore waiver for service academy athletes
"Trump, presented the commander in chief trophy to the West Point black knights football team for their victory over navy and air force in a ceremony at the White House. The president says he's considering a new pro sports option for military academy athlete. I'm gonna look at doing a waiver for service academy athletes who can get into the major leagues like the NFL hockey baseball. We'll get to see we can do it and they'll serve their time after they're finished with professional

"I'm Larry, Richard. I'm John chamois, you know, after the tree of life attack. It certainly made a lot of people question the vulnerability of places where we gather in public and that kind of has faded from the public conversation with time. But now it's back after the attack in California over the weekend. And joining us on our disc institute of Pittsburgh Newsline. Former United States army officer operating in operation desert shield and Desert Storm from black knights security. Dennis Legia, good morning. Thank you. Good morning. Guys. You've been at this business for a long time. And the idea at thought about this more than once status when I'm sitting in church in the morning, and I'm I'm looking at the congregation, and I'm looking at our situation and any church. It's not unlike the facilities that had been attacked. But can we really protect them? Right. And that's the challenge. So we're we're talking about what homeland security typically refers to as a soft target. Right. And so that is challenging mean. Soft targets are open to the general public. They're easily accessible to a large number of people. And because they want their facilities feel welcoming to their members or visitors in their guests at one of the challenges is out you put a security program in place that does not feel unwelcoming when you think about places of worship, many would think that would be absolutely the safest place to be in many ways and for good reason for a long time. But now, it has definitely become a target area. So just as a citizen what kind of heads up, can you give people just to pay a little more attention just in case, right? The department. Homeland security did a great job with their awareness campaign. We've all heard of it. See something say something in one of the one of the challenges is maintaining that heightened sense of awareness. You know, so here we are talking about this topic fresh off of the incidents that have occurred recently. And so what happens is we start moving away from the incidence, and then people's security postures start to soften tonight an incident happens, then we increase our heightened sense of awareness. And so when you're talking about the general public, those are the people that are they normally become first responders when an incident does occur in. So my voice would be exactly what you said. Which is. I do the same thing you do I go into church pay attention to where I'm sitting I pay attention to where the exits are also pay attention to you know, the people that I see entering the. And of course, it's not only places of worship, you know. But is it is it someone that I see regularly regularly? Do they seem on a place? Do they have a backpack team excessively, bald bulging thing? Of that nature. So I would I would just say the answer is. Yeah. Pay attention to your surroundings. And if you see something say, something, we'd all we don't live in a world anymore. All I'm sure it's going to be okay. You know, I saw this in Italy last summer where it was not unusual to see armed military personnel walking around with with some pretty heavy duty firepower. And if you talk to people who've visited Israel or lived in Israel that is commonplace. But we're intimidated by that we don't want that in our society because somehow it's surrendering to the forces of evil that we would actually acknowledge the fact that we would need that. But are we to the point where we do need that is that is a tough question. Because definitely over the last decade we have seen number of attacks on these soft targets increase, and again that apartment homeland security does a great job of educating and keeping the general public aware. And you know, from what from what I've seen from them. The soft target attacks. Don't seem to be going away anytime soon, I agree with you. I think the general public still doesn't feel like we're ready to see military style. Law enforcement officials walking around, you know, our places of worship movie theaters. Things of that nature..

"We already see it in airports your question. Do I feel like rats that place? I feel like we definitely need to be more proactive and thinking about you know, what steps can we take again trying to strike that balance of making the the place feel welcome. But also feeling competent and the security program that we haven't place, you know, Dennis for many years a security system for a home was something that only the rich people could afford. But now technology is made that accessible in many ways, even with the those doorbells with cameras on springs. We very help. Helpful. What do you recommend for the average person who wants to try to do what they can to protect their home? I do have a security alarm system at all. And you know, I live in the parks. And so about parks not an area that we'd say what's going on about the park. But you know, you never know you want to protect your loved ones. Which are of course inside your dwelling. Sometimes we're away from the home because we travel and things of that nature. So you're right security home alarm systems have become much more affordable. And so I I would definitely recommend that I would definitely recommend proper lighting outside the perimeter of your home. And so a great deterrent is floodlights. With with motion sensors on the sides on the front on the back of your house because crimes do typically occur at night. And so, you know, if if emotion censored light does activate then that's going to of course, start or deter somebody away. And then the last thing I would recommend is make sure you're in communication with your neighbors. If you're if you're going to be leaving your home for an extended period of time, one of your children are going to be left home along make sure you communicate that to your neighbors. Black Knight security president Dennis Lee, Jack. Thank you for your time this morning. Good information. Dennis. You know, we're we're walking down a fine line here of security and paranoia. And you just don't know you don't wanna be to the point where you're living your life inside a shell because you're afraid of everything beyond it. But at the same time, you want to be lightened and smart well at very least of the new technology is remarkable even like the ring doorbell stuff. Yeah. I mean, relatively not that expensive compared to the value of what you have in your house, or if you just want us monitor who's coming to your front door packages delivered knowing those kind of things somebody I was with the other day their phone went off, and it was a motion sensor at their house. And they opened it up on the phone, and it literally was the mailman walking down the street. Right. I mean, that's all lies, you know. But it interrupted his day, and he's open the phone to see. Oh, what's going on? Innocent stuff control, though, the alerts that you get in. But that's what it's designed for. Well. You know comes up to your front door if somebody's walking by and that kind of thing, but I don't know. I just don't know. How far down the road a paranoia you really want to go. "It has about into just like pudgy. Yeah. All right Sam I've been playing the latest pinball machine from stern called black Knight. Oh, yeah. Sort of rage. We all. Is it as cool as it initially looked? It's so cool, are you? So this is a sequel two games that came out of the eighties. Black Knight nineteen eighty and then black Knight two thousand nine hundred eighty eight or nine and the original creator made it and those games were were themed around like fantasy and the future a little bit. And then like tonight, the talks Jews like the black. Knight will slay you in the nineteen eighty game. Which was pretty scary. It's yeah. Shred and soundtrack with like metal guitars, which is really good and singing, and this has all that back. And is it brand new with like a black Knight toy in the middle that like fights you and stuff, and then has the soundtrack is by Scott, Ian, anthrax and Brendon small. I don't care about anthrax out much. But Brennan small I really like he's from home movies and for Medoc clips, and he does call outs and stuff like that. And got like all involved in this game. And I was so happy to find that out. So it has like a good vibe. And then the art is so heavy metal magazine. Cool. It's like you fight random monsters, and they're on like, a big, you know screen, and they're like so well designed and gory and cool and stuff like that. Just as a good like funny eighties. Metal feel for a game that came at the is it the black Knight toy that's in the middle. It's not as prominent as a champion pub. It's just like that. And it has a flail on one side. So it's like a two pinball thing. Back work like spin it upwards, and so it's kind of fighting you it's moving and then on the other side is shield that goes up and down bash it attack them or like in the middle. You could hit them too. So it's like that's the point of it is champion pub esque nonsense. That's awesome. I completely missed that in the images. Yeah. It's cool. So I bought it. Yeah. Yeah. You you your co owner of the owner was the owner Freegold watch within. So if any arcade here if scoop fans are visiting San Francisco, can they go to free gold watch and play the stable. Yeah. But and I don't on these other games. But they're also have the other two black night games. And they're like all prominently displayed right now, and it looks so cool. Yeah. Can check out my Twitter feed for pictures, and we have a bunch on Jan to he find herself in San Francisco. Go to free gold watch. Very awesome, arcade. We're Sam operates multiple pinball tables there yet I've also been playing a bit of steam quest..
Lower mortgage rates drive increase in refinance applications
"Funnily enough the last time I sat in this chair for Chi. We talked about how mortgage rates were dropping and that was good news for the spring home buying season C pay attention. And as it happens. Those dropping rates have also kicked off a wave of refinancing. Homeowners are happy a report from analysts black. Knight says some five million people could end up saving hundreds of dollars a month each but what about the banks who make those loans? Marketplace's Megan McCarthy Carino reports they're hustling the last couple of years have been tough for mortgage lenders with interest rates around five percent. Refinancing hit a twenty year. Low many lenders had to downsize with mortgage departments at Jp Morgan and Wells Fargo losing hundreds of jobs then last week rates are continuing to fall today. Edging very close to the three percent range on the thirty year. Fix interest rates dropped for the fourth straight week in the phones. Started ringing or deadly fielding more calls we've w seen increase in activity. But hey, that's what we're here for right? We love that. Avi. Mizrahi is a lender with cross country mortgage in Boca Raton, Florida. He says the Sasken handle the current load. But if the trend continues into the summer, they may need more help refinance applications shot up almost forty percent last week to their highest level in more than two years. According to Joel con with the mortgage Bankers Association is a big deal because we're actually seeing bars come back to the marketing particularly borrowers with bigger loans who bought in the last couple years when interest rates were on the high end, but will it really be enough to spur more hiring in the mortgage industry? Garin patriot with federal financial analytics, isn't so sure. Thanks expectation is that this is just a blip mortgage rates have already started bouncing back up this week with more increases predicted later in the year. So mortgage rate watchers might want to keep their seat belts. Buckled and be ready for more bumps.
Explainer 157: Oh Brexit, where art thou?
"Uh-huh. The beginning of this week, and such is the effect. Brexit has on our perceptions of time the beginning of this week. Now feels like something that happened before the ball war. There was a gathering consensus that didn't you want to the Brexit fiasco was at last looming. The UK's Prime Minister Theresa may now making the limbless and defiant black Knight from the one and the holy grail seem model of philosophical pragmatism was seeking to put her EU withdrawal deal to parliament full the third time uncowed by the fact that its previous to submissions had resulted in the biggest and fourth biggest defeats ever inflicted on British governments Bill the is to the right. Two hundred forty two the nose to the left three hundred ninety one. View was nevertheless forming but maize plan for another. Go was not quite as mad as it sounded that with the March twenty ninth deadline looming. All but the most crazed of Brexit ahead. Bangers would understand that maze? Root out of the EU was now the only one realistically on offer and fall in behind it, a vote cast reluctantly counts the same as any of them. They might still have been a delay. It is far from clear that parliament has time to enact all necessary legislation before much twenty nine but the two thousand and sixteen referendum result would be honored. The UK would be leaving the EU may had emphasized and correctly that any delay without defined end. Would risk this blessed event not occurs toll. And as I say there is a danger. Failure to agree. A deal that actually could end up in a situation where we have no Brexit as. On monday. However, the speaker of the house John berko in the manner perhaps of a boxing referee, taking mercy only battered barely conscious contender and calling the fight confounded may scheme. Bucko invoked a splendidly vintage president of parliamentary procedure dating back to sixteen four which precludes governments from pestilential repeat introductions of bills previously voted down. The government kennel legitimately do is to resubmit to the house the same proposition ball substantially the same proposition as of last week, which was rejected by one hundred forty nine. Thanks main seemed genuinely surprised by coz intervention, though, she should not have been mostly because berko a piece to have a legitimate point. But at least, partly because throughout the Brexit process bucco has given every indication of very much in. Enjoying the bright of the neutral spotlight has shown upon the speaker's chair. Unless substantial changes were made to Theresa May's Bill ruled berko, it would not be readmitted, given that substantial changes to not seem possible without the acquiescence of the EU who have already made it clear that they won't be any that would appear to be it. Unless inevitably this being Brexit. It isn't. As we go to a various ruses being suggested for dragging maze. Withdraw agreement back into the ring including vote to overrule. The speaker will even asking the Queen to prorogue the current session of parliament and then open a new one. Although again with barely eight damn days to go until Brexit is supposed to happen. It is debatable that there is much more time for such nonsense. If it's hard enough to make sense of what has happened making sense of what will happen is like teaching dog to play the banjo. You can try, but what would be the point. It's possible to say what the possible outcomes are the current default of a no deal Brexit, an orderly Brexit next Thursday as planned a delay to Brexit general election, a second referendum, but such has been the up ending of logic by breaks that VO one of these surely has to occur. They all seem somehow unlikely we have reached the point at which an invasion of England by Scotland wouldn't seem all that surprising on balance and mood in many respects be a relief. This weekend marks a major step in Britain's more than two year journey to leave the European Union. The us remaining twenty-seven nations will vote on a divorce agreement with the United Kingdom and for more. We turn to NPR's Frank Langfitt in London. Hi, Frank may Mary how is this vote likely to go in Brussels any chance of defeat. I think people would be really surprised if there were defeat, you know, there there are complaints about at Spain is threatening to vote against it. Because they have a dispute with the United Kingdom over Gibraltar in Britain is ruled Gibraltar for several centuries. But the sense is the European Union is generally getting most of what it wants out of this and it's expected to pass their on Sunday. Okay. But then it has to get through the British parliament, and it phase a much steeper climb there. Tell us about how it's looking. It's totally different over here in the British parliament. And the numbers are bad. All right now, as far as anybody can tell May's conservative party doesn't even have a parliamentary majority here. So they don't have enough votes of their own to do it. Speaking of naming Stephen Bush, he writes for the new statesman. It's a left leaning political magazine here, and he's a top political journalists in in this is what he said she is seventy two votes down before you kind of factor in the fight and the opposition parties will vote against. So she is well adrift and on calls for quite a big defeat as it stands so objections from the left and the right from her own part in how he's had of her party. What happens if affairs? Well, this is really interesting some people in our own party, Brexit tears. They they would love to go back to Brussels and try to get this deal tweaked, but Brussels is not an immune to make changes. They've been negotiating over this for a ton of time. And they're kind of tired of it some people here have been talking about a pretty interesting scenario that will sound familiar to Americans. They're saying in recent US history. There's something that could be relevant EU member in two thousand eight the US global financial crisis. There was this troubled asset relief program at heart which. We all covered. This was going to have the government by all these toxic assets were hundreds of billions of dollars will congress initially voted it down markets crashed. And even though congress didn't like it. They passed it later kind of in a panic. Now, the thought is there could be a market crash here that could push members of parliament to change their mind, but it's not clear because most people don't expect this thing to pass in the first place. Remind us why British leaders of so many different political stripes hate this deal. Well, they hate it. Because it comes down to the Irish border at certain point when the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. It will create the need for a border on the island of Ireland between Northern Ireland which is a part of the UK and the Republic of Ireland that's part of the EU. And basically with the US saying is you can't leave until we solve this problem and Brexit. Here's are saying gosh could take forever to get a new trade deal. We not sure how to solve the problem. Exactly. So we could be stuck in the U for years could Theresa May's political career survive having this voted down in parliament will normally prime minister Ori is. You know here would have to resign. But since the Brexit vote in two thousand sixteen normal rules, definitely do not apply to British politics anymore. Stephen Bush that journalist I was talking to thinks that she actually make just keep coming back to parliament until she gets the answers. She wants this is how he put it. I suspect than want have to happen is you have a defeat. Everyone expects another vote where people kind of expected to be falling when it's not fine. And then perhaps that point you get the necessary panic Theresa May has been in such an odd position for the last two years implementing or trying to implement this policy that she was not a supporter of before she became nine ministers sack. I was she managed to survive through all of this. You know, it's it's remarkable to watch her. She gets a lot of criticism here. But she just doesn't quit. Nobody seems to be able they try to beat her down. It doesn't really work. There've been a number of memes out that depict her as the black Knight in Monty python's clearly grail. This is the night that keeps losing limbs and keeps fighting on saying it's just a scratch, and Stephen Bush, the journalists I was talking to he says this has been her style for a long time. She would affectively just grab. Really exhaust away to victory. Not affectively Theresa May's political approach just keep on, you know, Putin along and Wakefield opponents to themselves out poodling along poodling along, and I should add one of the thing here that the prime minister has going for her. If this all falls, apart, the United Kingdom could leave the European Union with no deal at all. Which most people think would be an economically disastrous, and it would be seen globally as a huge self inflicted wounds. So there is a worst case scenario that she's you know, and she stands between the United Kingdom, and that scenario the other thing is that when you listen to all of her opponents, none of them have a better idea honestly for leaving the U it's a bad situation. But she does have some respects relatively strong position NPR's Frank Langfitt in London. Thank you. Happy to do at Ari. This message comes from NPR sponsor Capital

"And so when people are trying to figure out is this kid going to LSU or Clemson, Texas A and M will I know people on all their staffs, whereas some a lot of local reporters are kind of relegated to tap into their LSU bay. So I'm kind of able to kind of go around the country, you know, at one point I had seventy nine different schools contracting me for scouting service. That's a lot of programs. And so I'm able to really tap into things that a lot of a lot of others may not be able to Ohio State twenty one to late six. So the green wave hanging with the buckeyes what guy should we adopt a little bit more than that than over two and two scores of just giving Casey Wayne we had a hard time. You know, Ohio State is going gonna open that up in the second half. That's going to be it's going to be a bit of a bloodbath. I looked to getting paid for it. And it's a it's a good experience for the green wave and tell me about Willie what we're on college football just in general Willie Fritz this is thought to be a pretty big year for him for that to land squad potentially qualifying for a bowl. They've had. They've had a rough go at it though. I mean, they lost a heartbreaker against Wake Forest probably going to lose today against state. They did beat Nicol state. But is he does he have that program on on the right track? I think he does. I know there are a lot more talented of a roster than they were before he got there. And that's always where it starts. Right. You gotta have the talent. And and he's brought some good coaches in recently to a guy. One of my best friends JJ mccloskey's on staff over their former New Orleans Saints rate recruiter. I think they're heading the right track. You know, but when you open up against a power five schools like Wake Forest, Ohio State teams that are supposed to be better in tooling. It's kind of hard to get off. To a fast start. So, but I think they're on the right track. I think they'll they'll be bowl eligible by the end of this year on this is a big year for him. Now, if they don't if they aren't bowl eligible, I think he could go into next year on the hot seat, you know? So I think this is a big year for him. But I do think they're going to get there. Looking at some of the other college games, they had my dad would love it. If I just mentioned this ongoing two armies playing Oklahoma that's going to be ugly. In Norman, Oklahoma so hats off to the black knights, but it's gonna be a rough day for army army football brag from an army football made my day my dad's year last year when they finally beat navy. So he was he was thrilled about that. And armies coming here. Yeah. In a couple of years, it'd be the first visit since like nineteen fifty eight you remember army in the thirties and forties. Army was the premier program football. It's interesting to think about they're coming here to and when is twenty twenty two I think it's one one. Okay. Nonetheless, though, he he's he's tickled about that. So we would onto the Cup. Excuse me, college football scoreboard. Florida international thriller Miami. The u fourteen and nothing in Miami's kind of real and a little bit too. Yeah. And coming into this year that was a team I used to cover before I moved here. So. Coming into this year. I thought they were a little overrated. I didn't think they were the number eighteen the quarterbacks pretty average. I think we saw that. You know, and I'll say why LSU had control of that game. Looking back at that game. If they had a quarterback that was a little more capable. I I would have been very interesting. There were a lot of overthrows a lot of missed opportunities for Miami in that game. But yeah, I think that team's going to struggle a little bit this year talking to some of their coaches prior to the season they thought they were a little overrated. They knew that. They're not quite there yet they're not a national championship contenders. But you know, I mean, Mark Ricks good coach. They have a good base of talent there. So good coaches probably not far away. I mean, they ACC isn't the SEC. There's only a couple of teams that are fighting for championships every year in that conference. And now at Florida state on the decline. Florida isn't really playing that. Well, Miami certainly has an opportunity to become the premier program in that state right now, I know they lost early to Auburn. But Washington a lot of people were hitching their wagon to that that school as one that could be considered in the top four in the playoffs. You still see them that way? Did you see him that railway originally? I think Washington's a good team only because of the conference, you know, I think if Washington SEC that's an eight and fourteen I just think that there's there's that big of a discrepancy between the concerts conferences. I really do. But they played Auburn really tough. And they showed they they've got some some guys up front on both sides of the ball that could make plays. And and they just weren't able to really punch.

Hawaii can pick up a first down without scoring a touchdown. But for all intents and purposes, if they pick up the first down here, let's say don't score. They'll be a first and goal inside the three or presumably score touchdown and have an extra point to the game. I liked the sportsmanship. I just saw for both players. This is wise last time out, and they want the full time out at rich. It was one on one out here on our side, where Elijah Riley was pressing man up against Joe Joe ward, and they just clapped hands with each other. And said, hey, it's been a whale of a ballgame. And get them loud for one last play here from his army defense. And the other thing is J Duncan has such belief in. What j Bateman does with that defense? He knows that he doesn't need to get involved in this situation. Now, he's coming down to silent about the twenty-five. He wants to get a good angle.
