"Doing it yeah I did spend much needed I think change of pace for a lot of people I've been getting a lot of messages on Twitter thanks thank you for the Niners news I mean I'm I'm not the one consigning these guys there are training these guys but I mean it's just spend a lot of new stuff to focus on that's for sure this week of the forty Niners have been made nine transactions so far and in three days or so so that's that's a lot of defend busy for them even though they haven't brought in any outside glitters yeah that's the crazy thing right not a single outside player wears around the country got Brady the box Phil rivers to the Chargers you know like Nick Foles to the to the bears on and on and on but the Niners just staying in the house and I will start from there did you sit back doors still anticipate any out of house move that would be significant not like of a backup tackle or a backup D. tackle something you know something splashy no and and first of all there are two teams and then learn about only two out of thirty two teams who have not brought in an outhouse guy and it's the forty Niners in the cheeks the two teams that played in the Super Bowl also two teams who don't have quite that much money to spend yeah other cap wise so it was always going to be let's keep the gang together kind of off season for the forty Niners that was the general theme and that's why there was some surprise regarding the divorce Buckner trade but if you look at the numbers coming at the top seed in the bailable salary cap space and there was always this undertone of while the four ADRs don't restructure couple more deals and they they restructured to they restructured quant one of the commanders and Weston Richburg if they don't do Jimmy Garoppolo's another big contract and by the way restructuring is an unsustainable way of operating it's like kicking debt down the road so the forty Niners want to limit that but if they didn't do at least one more they were gonna have to pick one guy one guy was going to be the odd man out out of the the the pending free agents are god they had to play a guy they had to pay in the future and that's exactly diving what's ended up happening the automat out though with the surprise then into force but not a lot of people thought that it might be somebody like Eric Armstead obviously because he's gonna be a free agent but Buckner was gonna be playing on the fifth year option well they saw more trade return value in Buckner they are able to get a first round pick back and he was wanting a contract of over twenty million so there was a doctor who ended up being the odd man out but they're trying to keep everybody else and obviously Emmanuel Sanders is pending right now Incyte had told you you are walking out of the the locker room in Miami after the tragic ending of symbol fifty four instead yeah you just talk to deforest Buckner is a forty nine R. for the last time he's gonna be a cold next year off you would have said probably right I give that about a one in what factors in million a hundred I mean yeah that was not like that if somebody said that to you David hello there you would have been like yeah that's what I'm anticipating right I mean that was a L. as the dust settles a gobsmacked is the some people say the only people who use that crazy words that was a that was a blind side hit wasn't it yeah yeah to be honest I thought after the year the Erik Armstead put up this season and their cars has been good for for two straight years I didn't think that the contractual value on the open market would be so despair between Armstead and Buckner yeah March that making about seventeen million a year the Niners now and Buckner at about twenty one million from the cold so it had salaries been equal eight you know it would have been more likely that the forty Niners would jettison the arms that and keep Buckner but there are a lot of underlying details that I've you know gotten to kind of understand now after it's happened so I'm I'm not pretending like I knew this was gonna happen before did because it was surprising but but you can see why the forty Niners did it good day from that monetary perspective so now they have a lot more financial capital to work with but then I mean it that Buckner did have better trade value on the market you didn't know that at the time I I I wasn't sure if Buckner would would get a first round pick in return for example was up it was for gone conclusion that arms that wouldn't everybody was talking about a second rounder of bass so the fact that I was able to get that number thirteen back in exchange that that that's a game changer for the forty Niners and then you have to look at the act with inotes perspectives which is what we should ship the talking about how are the forty hours going to replace Buckner and how would they have replaced arms that and I think that doctors in huge into all of this because Buckner and Armstead did not play the same position Barker obviously is that the the pure defensive tackle he's on the inside wires arms that it's an inside out kind of guy played over nine and stopped about half the money inside about how going outside depending on whether or not the nickel or base down and and I think at the end of the day was that flexibility that really made the forty Niners say okay we're gonna pay arms that we're gonna keep him here obviously there's other benefits to it but it will get back inside out flexibility can that can help our offensive line maybe fix our scheme a little better moving forward even at Buckner is technically a better player man it's it's it's a shocker in and I understand we talk about exes and ohs that man that pressures on Armstead to perform now the second out you know who's there DJ Jones is a name obviously everybody fell in love with last year until he got hurt Ronald Blair but he tore an ACL last year I can imagine you know he'll he'll be ready for the start of the season that B. if you was he probably diminish so I mean at the airlines maybe for us David that the what's left on the D. line you know how much of our state benefited from Buckner's presence and then if you're the Niners and I know it's a long way away but do you go replenish that D. line in the draft again or do you fall in love with that siren song of receiver yeah so what I would say the forty Niners are worse than they were at the start of the week there's there's absolutely no question but you know championships these are played in March inspection it's March so it's the it's one of those things where you have to use the capital that you god in life of divorce Faulkner which is some extra money and that number thirteen pick try to make the team better and I I'm not sure if they're going to go defensive linemen that I I think there are a couple options I haven't done my full offense of a defensive line scouting for work for the draft and I think the offensive line is actually more more likely without thirteen take the defensive linemen that everybody wants the receiver obviously everybody's talking about the receiver so for some reason that that there is there's a feeling in me that the forty hours and try to go in the house with or with the smaller signing at that defensive interior and if we're just talking about it in an in house candidates before any potential smaller signing candidates either I think they really like the J. Jones now the problem is that the force partners appear or three technique BJ Jones is not a three technique BJ Jones is the you know in a one technique body every year that tional nose tackle big stocky guy built like a fire hydrant but we saw a couple times last year where he just showed an other worldly burst on me one time he just flattened Seattle center and then sacked Russell Wilson with about twenty two seconds and then later in that game actually chase Russell will come down to the side like which is something a one technique that doesn't do so yet you have DJ John this one technique but showing three technique type of athleticism that I think makes him the leading candidate to get the bulk of the chances are snapped in the rotation to help replace the force bucket out you won't be the only one because he still has this one technique duties and you know it it's a very complicated shuffle up there but I think that's a good starting point Ronald Blair I think will be hopefully next year I think is already doing is running the he was hurt and wind we had last year so you know the the the elbow they go sometimes they can slow down but I think the forty Niners will be healthy then you got a guy like us all upon us the porters going to count on to do some work on the inside the last year of his rookie deal so you gotta get a little bit from each guy right maybe add one more cheaper signing because they are much cap space left then you know it can take me a street for example maybe he's finally healthy next year I think Kevin givens he was undrafted free agent rookie a lot they liked him a lot so you have five guys you get a little bit from all five guys you're not gonna be as good last year but you hope that whoever you drop the number thirteen put you over the top of the team and you get better at the defensive line gets a little bit worse get a star receiver star linemen at number thirteen whatever they hope that that makes the team overall better yeah I was talking to David Lombardi of the athletic in man is to be you know be interesting because if obviously if we weren't in this situation healthwise if everything was normal in the world we would have had John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan during a press conference and we would've been able to ask them all these questions as it is David David I don't even know when we'll get media availability M. S. supposed to give you a conference all is that it and the planning anytime sooner I haven't heard anything about potential plans one of the issues right now is that there's been a delay in some of the official signing around the league because players I've been taken physical the out because they're not allowed to come into TV personality and to get over that the player and the team has to come to an agreement on a neutral position to do the physical but a lot of teams don't wanna execute a big contract until they get to see the player on their own so it turned into this mass where you don't have all the official finding coming out once the way that they usually do on the first or second day the free agency of some of them have not been processed but not all of them and the people don't like new oppressors until all of the signing their official and right now we're in a holding pattern so we're having to just write stuff based on our analysis and and hope that it ends up matching up but with what John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan say when they do talk this is easily the money I've been saying this all week the boldest move their of their tenure there's no question right I mean I am drafting Nick Bosa was easy the Jimmy G. trade kind of fell into their lap and if it didn't work out yeah it was a second rounder but man this is this is franchise sort of amusing defining or altering that's a big one may really is it's a it's a big one and and you know they're gonna hope yeah go ahead very different stage of building or sustaining this team now you know it the first couple years was interesting because they have so much cap room and all this draft capital so we will go about building the team and they front loaded a lot of the contracts back to them that we saw the ship starts to happen last year but this season in earnest they are back loading everything and they're looking at the salary cap locally for them increasing by a lot next year and they're trying to get a lot of the money you know on the books for later on and they're trying to the players then that they just went to the Super Bowl to they're trying to keep the ship rolling and they're starting to do some you know you could call it Bailey Cecchi and you know he's he's the kind of guy that will kind of player lose even though he's the immensely popular you know today it it looks like cold blooded move but it's one of those moves that a when you look at the spreadsheet financially somebody had to go they they just weren't able to keep this going into two twenty twenty with everybody there unless they took a bunch of unsustainable restructures so it's one of those one of those moves that seem callous but it will this is the price of doing business when you're a good football team and you want to make it scalable financially as possible so I think they've changed gears into that mode and now they have the hope that the guys they did keep and the draft pick they detain you know perform well because otherwise it's gonna look really bad but it but if the if the return end up performing well it's gonna look really good right good stuff Dave so what's his real quick on the way out what's next is it Emmanuel Sanders is future or what what's the next item you thing on the agenda all at by my calculations they have about nine million in salary cap space maybe ten million so.

"Thanks so much for joining us hope your state as well as being NFL free agency continues and Nick Foles Nick Foles is a bare like you said huge cap number for training now you know I was texting with John D. Filipo this morning who's their quarterback coach now yeah and I asked him do the Jack stick at thirty four million other cap if they trade Foles hope you're well the family Bubba no there would be supposedly around twelve million of dead money chamber traded two would take on the rest so after I got that I kind of thought they were gonna do that and there is there was talk about Nick Foles going to Indianapolis Colts is the reason that I that I thought about it because I I've been told and read that he they would take a thirty four million dollar capital why would you do that but they're only taking a twelve million dollar campaign and then the Chicago Bears check on the rest of his salary so that does make sense members does a great job as you well know and covering the forty Niners for the athletic he's got a peacekeeper by second round tender from Abita brew to wire the forty Niners eyeing tight ends we'll get to those questions but it has been busy Armstead Buckner the thirteen pick ward Blair McKeon and Brita born all those different things and let's get into it with Matt barrows who judges courtesy of the my gas line what first of all what are you doing to to stay busy to stay sane what you doing well it that this part is that free agency and the NFL is a shelter in place situation for an NFL writer anyway so I'm not sure my lifestyle would have been all that different had this been a a non virus years sort of hitting at my computer and hitting refreshing my Twitter every ten seconds to see if that anything is going on what do you want to call them putting a lot the Texan that's that's what free agency is so sadly my lifestyle is unchanged yes south Korean training and still working which is good you're lucky you're able to do that yeah absolutely you did right Matt something that I've been thinking about and we kinda knew because they shut down forty nine forty nine last week I think it was on Thursday that on Monday Kyle and John and for rocky Roach did go into the building but yesterday they did not they stayed at home so I'm wondering I guess teleconferencing the zoom map reading and multiple people on the screen if if you've figured out any more than your road in the athletic about how they're actually conducting free agency the start of the new league year when when nobody's in the same room on their on their respective homes I have it it's not anything that all those guys want to you know get on the phone and talk to be about right now because they're so busy during their their business but there is technology there that at least the the principal John Lynch Kyle Shanahan had been outfitted with I I like being explain this by the the team spokesman that they can watch film Hey there you know preparing for the draft they can watch film on a prospect and you know which could be watching that clip in his house in chanting it can jump on and they can kind of communicate you know with that with a pointer or however they do it but it that that technology has gotten such that they're not they're isolated but they're able to kind of work with one another including with with visual elements to which I thought was interesting and you're right is is worthy of the story I think that down the line because that's exactly how they're gonna have to start you know obviously dealing with with free agency but it it looks very much like the draft is going to have to be the same way members to join this course we're talking about the of forty Niners during free agency read all this great stuff at the athletic let's go to the biggest story which is they kept Armstead they traded Barker they get the thirteenth overall pick I know you've explained it but if you to explain it again for listeners why did they why did they make the move like that well I think it went went down something like this you know that they they start meeting with these agents just prior to the scouting combine is helping that which killed people who had the reputation of a driving a very hard bargain Khalil Mack's agent for example and you know killed made it clear at the get go this is what what we're after for this guy in the forty Niners realized that the boy that's that's not really really close to the number that we see us paying for divorce Buckner and I think it was at the combine that they started it makes sense because he's always wear short of the seed of trade to begin they began talking to different teams about I created deforest Buckner the colts a hometown team in Indianapolis obviously we're we're the that the biggest takers on that you know that's what we have and I think obviously the the thirteenth overall pick was very appealing to the forty Niners who are far short on on good picks in this upcoming draft so obviously at the thirteenth pick is and we love the wide receivers in particular Jerry Judy I think it's just going to be he's one of the best prospects ever I think coming into the NFL will see what they do there are a couple of defensive linemen that are really interesting Derek brown from Auburn I saw a couple of years ago in the iron bowl number five is just a massive man that does have some some quickness to him but just keeping it in house right now they do have J. J. Jones that is coming back from injury but he was a dominant player chimes I mean that if the Green Bay game another game she was just really impactful so you've obviously got Armstead you've got balls and you got D. Ford what how do you see them using that that fourth planet rotates Solomon Thomas and their other players but do you see G. J. Jones having a media roles we proceed forward Matt and what about Sheldon day he's a free agent right now what's his status your free agent looks like he's going to become an unrestricted free agent you know I I think he's obviously somebody that they like back because he does play that that we techniques spot that back bunker play itself you're right finding replacements in email it might not be one guy to do it but day would be part of a rotation that that could fill in there you know you look at who's left in free agency and there are number of interior defensive linemen and I apologize I don't have the the list in front of me but there are there a lot of prominent beans and lot of these guys are are older and you don't get to for example is one and and and by the way Derek brown from Auburn reminds me of him just a big wait but also really physically impressive guy and I think the forty Niners would love it if you sell the thirteenth but my point being is that there there do seem to be a lot of options at that position in free agency and then maybe even if you waited they create she you could get one of those guys on the cheap but I agree with you if that decision they need to fill in as far as BJ Jones yeah I think that his third down role will you know you've got to keep off the field usually on third downs last year the issue with DHL this is an issue in college it is a bit of an issue in the pros is that D. J. Jones has been better at the beginning of season standings then at the end of things he's he's tempted to wear down a little bit it's that will obviously be a collection if you're expanding it that count are you gonna be able to count on him in December January which is when if he wants to be playing talking about Paris covers forty nine for the athletic by the way Ben garland just signed for a one year deal I'm sure you got that but I just want to make sure that you know those other writers you guys can be very competitive so I just want to make sure that you didn't you know yeah yes I'd like to just so that you know how much you get to we know that yet I just did what I was looking at defensive tackles now so I gotta go back one year two point two five million according to the NFL network you go deal the the neighbor heard today and maybe they just can't fit a minute now with pick thirteen they could be in the wide receiver market there's three really good ones and it's a deep wide receiver draft I don't know if the forty Niners gonna look it you just mentioned are probably offensive tackle I don't know if they're gonna look at Judy or rugs or lamb at thirteen but a manual Sanders was connected with the cowboys today what do you think of his chances of coming back to the forty Niners I think he wants to come back in the forty Niners but you know the that the cowboys would be a real adversary for the forty Niners in doing that you play you grew up in Texas he played at SMU so the guy at the end of his career that's got to be appealing to him I yeah I I would think that winning a championship is is is really high on his list of criteria so you know that that's that's basically who Nagel skaters competition is good teams that have a decent shot at the title and I I guess you put the cowboys is that they're they're probably not as high forty Niners the patriots have been discussed the ravens have been discussed his role team that beat a wide receiver and could really use a veteran wide receiver like Sanders so you know as long as his market is hot I don't know exactly what the forty Niners can't figure is now I'll have to see how some of these deals our structure but you know I I think that there might be other teams that are end up offering more and so the question comes down to Sanders and the how badly do you wanna stay in the locker room and then I had a shot at a Super Bowl title and I just had a birthday yesterday Emmanuel turn on Saint Patrick's day thirty three so here's an older player I want to ask you about we're talking about you know how they're conducting the new league year which starts in a little over two hours right now but obviously the legal tampering period started on on Monday how they're doing that at home but I see the video of Ronald Blair and the forty Niners gonna bring him back and he's coming back from a torn ACL that he suffered later in the year and he's running but he's running yes okay right how how do their medical people what we could do here as far as re having any injuries but significant injuries Matt like a torn ACL when your medical people can't supervise that that has to be a great risk in a great unknown yeah absolutely.

"Thing wherever you get your podcasts. Don't miss it. In mid February Elizabeth heard about the sex, Ed Bill through a text from Kansas to use pastor who taught Al. She sent me the Bill and was like, are you interested in speaking about this, Elizabeth clicked on the link and read through the confusing legal language? The key part, the one that made Candice reach out was section to which said, sex, Ed content standards must include resources, references and information that are meaningful to the experiences in needs of lesbian gay, bisexual transgender and intersex communities. It wasn't like every school was going to start teaching courses like Al. But it definitely looked like an improvement. And I was like, yeah, sure. That sounds great. So the morning of February twenty eighth Elizabeth woke up like every other morning and headed off to school. The plan was for candidates to pick Elizabeth up after fourth period, AP gove. They would make the one hour drive north to the state house in Denver together. And at this point Elizabeth. Already written out, her testimony. She had bullet points about the importance of safe sex, practices, communication and the definition of consent. She is on the debate team after all, but as she sat in Starbucks waiting to get picked up. She started really thinking about what she was going to say. And it all felt like the wrong approach I was thinking, how that so impersonal and it doesn't really share my take on it. So it wouldn't have been as strong of testimony in. That's why decided to change it shortly after Elizabeth decided to scrap testimony Candice pulled up as they drove, Elizabeth was rewriting what she wanted to say her head. I'm super anxious because. Well, I the anxiousness anxiousness I the angst came from not knowing what exactly I was going to say. And then it was like, oh, shoot what I am going to say. I've never said out loud before. When Elizabeth arrived at the state house. She was hyper aware of how out of place she was this wasn't alal- or her middle school. Graduation, there were men and women in fancy suits. And the building itself was intimidating with its tall, granite columns, and gold dome roof, I have this binder in my hand like pretending to be prepared. You know, like I have important things in my binder, but really it's English homework and she didn't have to wait long to hear the first negative comments just as the group finished going through security. She was grabbing her binder out of the x Ray. And there's this lady behind us who's like I'm here to testify on the pervert Bill. That's what I'm calling or. No, she said the porn Bill is what she was calling it. And so the youth pastor pulls aside, and his like so that's the type of people who are going to be testifying with us like against the bell. So prepare yourselves for that. They walked up the steps to the committee room and sat down sort of in the back then the hearing started. Thank you. Madam chair, the first person to speak was Don Corum. He's a Republican state Senator from a little town in southwest, Colorado called Montrose, and he was co sponsoring the belt a fact that at upset, a lot of conservatives, the rash has been challenging to say the least. Many who speak do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Unfortunately they really do not live. This. Myself, my family. My friends have been accosted by people while walking down the street in stores, and especially on social media. Hi, respect. Everyone's first amendment. Right of free speech. Unfortunately truth has been the first victim. On paper corn looks like an unlikely candidate to cosponsor this Bill. He represents a really conservative part of the state one that's voted Republican in every presidential election since Lyndon Johnson. But here's the thing about Corum. He's used to ruffling feathers. Yeah I'm a I'm a little different. I'm a redneck Republican. But, you know, if you years ago, I ran the long acting reversible contraceptives, cut the abortion rate by sixty four percent pregnancy rate same state about seventy million dollars so far. So when Democrats took control of Colorado's house in Senate earlier this year in Corum heard they were planning on. Introducing the sex, Ed Bill, he signed on hoping to make some tweets, the blowback was swift at first, but manageable, people were calling his office, and stopping him on the street to tell them why they didn't like the Bill someone even sent graphic pictures of gay porn to his Senate Email. But then something happened that made him wonder if he'd miscalculated. How far people would be willing to go to stop the Bill Corum remembers it as a crisp, winner day, Denver. He was headed to his office after an afternoon on the Senate floor, when he got a phone call. It was his wife. I mean, do you remember the first words she said to you on the phone? I can't use those on the radio. Was it like holy shit or something like that? We should there's a guy in our driveway. Holy shit. There's somebody how you by the pickup. Wife, Diana was in her car in the driveway of their home in Montrose. How did she describe her him? Totally dressed in tan, head to toe Corum listened helpless, as Diana. Locked the doors of her Cadillac eventually when the stranger didn't leave. She decided the best course of action was to confront the guy, she remarked to the guy. Do you have a gun and the next thing was well, I do that was her comment. The best. If you leave now what do you think he was trying to do? Was he trying to send a message that like the bills? You know, I think it may be just a. Intimidation type thing that, you know, here I am. And there you are. I don't know. But this was right when you were really advocating for this Bill and your amendments that was in the heat of the pedal. Yes. Corm said the whole incident really shook him up. It made him question whether to keep supporting the sex, Ed Bill, but he's not really the type of person to back down from fight in, even though he was sponsoring the Bill mostly to make sure there was a conservative voice at the table. He also does really believe that teaching inclusion is important. In the last public eighteen months, I've had three people who I actually know in my district that either had a child, or grandchild, commit suicide. So I think we need to really sit down and talk about acceptance and tolerance of others who are different than we are. Going to raise rates are skyrocketing. So back at the state house is sitting in the committee room listening to Corum talk about all the harassment he's received for sponsoring the Bill and then she gets to hear firsthand. How angry people are about the idea of making sex, Ed, even a little bit more comprehensive and inclusive teaching lesbian gay, bisexual, and transgender lifestyles and values. Those who pushed us agenda is to increase that the Senate in our society over the objections of parents, some of it was really shocking to Elizabeth abuse in my opinion. But some of it, she had trouble taking seriously maims, BJ Jones time representing myself. Yeah. So it was a school up in boulder, I want to say this past.

I will and at the age of ninety four almost ninety five in December. Right. Yes. That's correct. How do you project onstage? Well, that's one of the things that I still have is a strong voice and audiences delighted with an old actor who can speak aloud because most of my audiences are also old when they don't hear the young actresses well because they come from a different era, and they speak softly, and they speak rapid they and they slur. And I don't. So what's your next roller? What you'd like to be your next role? As a matter of fact, I am going to be playing the grave digger in April at Chicago Shakespeare in hamlet after that, I have no idea it would take some courage for a theater to hire somebody who's ninety five. And I'm just hoping that somebody will Mike Nussbaum. Plays Rudy and Rachel bonds curve of departure at the Norfolk theater right outside of Chicago. We'll repeat it mister Nussbaum.
