"Or what you know a trick or treating is on yeah. In communities across the tri-state though the governor and everybody else on down who said do not have any Halloween parties in your home that include anyone who doesn't live in that home it's GonNa. They're gonNA. Listen to that I'm sure people are GONNA go again. Okay, we'RE NOT GONNA. then. He says the informal gatherings of friends and relatives again, that are outside of of of the the nuclear family is what's causing the spread of covid nineteen across the state of Ohio Right now, Hamilton County we fully expect to go purple today though we have now been told the believe that it doesn't really mean anything. So you have these four levels of for Norio, public health threat emergencies give you an idea of how bad the spread is in your community, and now the advisory in the way it's written at the state level says that if you go purple. People should only go out for essential services or supply. So okay sure. Shouldn't join out for any other reason. Now, the governor says he's not going to make any mandates that that that you follow that. So the mass mandate stays in fact, the social distancing that restaurants have to those are all in place and those are the same measures he says that would apply if you're read or purple or your Orangerie Yellow. said, he's not going to close. This is not going to order anymore shutdown. So all this nonsense it on the local leaders the Lee Tells Hamilton, county leaders and local school districts can decide if they want to continue to. Have Class or you know Hamilton County with one to put some restrictions on businesses they could do that Hamilton County leaders say well, we're waiting for the governor to tell us what purpose. And honestly in the meantime he he's come out and go I. Did this before and nobody screamed about it? Yeah. So it's up to you, Iran basically, you know he was on with Willie. Yesterday on on the other side of the the dial and he did say that he said you know I can recommend what I think people need to do but there are not going to be any more mandates and he said it. Finally said shutting down businesses or or schools or restaurants, or whatever is not really GonNa make that much difference right now because he said. got where the spreads coming from when people go to work when people go to a restaurant when kids go to school, they're wearing masks or following the social distancing rules, and that is not causing the coronavirus cases. Surge what's causing them to surges when he said, you know people get together on a Saturday Afternoon Watch football makes your inviting over maybe the neighbors or you're having you know your your brother-in-law in Yup and that's where the spread comes from because when people in those settings, they're not wearing masks and they're not properly social distancing because they think they're safe because they're in a smaller group, right? I. I. Kinda agree with whatever my kids school the loveland school they're doing an awesome job. And I feel the same way my wife's school has not had any problems. You know she says, the kids have been incredible. Yeah. About wearing masks and far follow. The of social distancing rules like you know they're doing everything. There's. As adults dot on their kids there's no way they're going to follow these rules and it's not. It's us that are gone not not where. We're the ones burning cities and it'll childish. So Hamilton County probably, we'll go purple today they're seven indicators they look at at least six of them signal the elevated case. So that will that will happen and whether there's any new mandates sure doesn't sound like a judge on the governor and. The county leaders who spoke yesterday now, they're going to continue you know the public awareness campaigns. Asking people like you said especially for for Halloween, not not the party or get together with anybody outside your family. Also. We talked about this before about like Dayton had different. Rules with the closing the bars. Yeah. Let's up and we talked about how it's like. We'll just leave it up to the locals the to figure that out. So you get mad throw mayor and all that you know what I make sense that he's doing that because I mean look at New York state I went there and made a visit family and stuff and because the city was under siege New York City right. He he closed all that stuff down and upstate got decimated and they weren't even close to where New York City was what we're seeing like Chicago is taking individual actions. Now, they put some new restrictions in place to try and slow the spread there and We'll see what happens I would think we'll wait at least a week. Next week if the cases of doubled again, you know as they have over the past three weeks in Hamilton. County. Then maybe it's a different story. Yeah, and of course, after Tuesday, we'll be past the election than it. Might be a little more. Willing to accept a new shutdowns and mandates because I, think right now he doesn't want to affect. His president's reelection tunes right. So so whoever like Sater's in a new boss up tap? Then he's GonNa. Go with whatever. The election's over. So nobody can go back and say, Hey, Mike Dewine cost us the election because three days before. Because Ohio such a big state for Yeah. Okay. Well, listen it. All make sense politics. It's all politics. Yeah it's a lot of politics. But by the way, are we supposed to get that new concoction and the trump took in? November has been approved also I heard yesterday and I I can't reveal the source on this but there are local health leaders who've been told to expect the first shipment of Vaccine mid-november here in Cincinnati. So, they're starting to make plans for how they're going to distribute the drinking water. That's what I say. When I mayor put all my thoughts into the drinking. Water Man. This sound of that all the top songs in the country right the top five of each of the big formats rock top forty.

I and it's funny if you watch the original which I'm sure you did of course is before every character had to be someone we knew. Right like the remake is, everyone is somebody that you know, and then you're like who does the voice of that guy is just like it was a stage, actor or Broadway, after or something like that and don't get me wrong. They're incredible and they are famous in their special, and it's and they do an amazing job, but I was like. Wow. They stacked the deck like crazy. I also here, here's here's your click. Bay I didn't know is Nathan Lane I thought it was billy crystal with the first time. I really watched it. Okay well. Maybe familiarize yourself with homosexuality. And a fear gay actors who got opportunities in the ninety there we go on. Billy's skewer homophobia host. No Pete Holmes exactly. Hugh, and on member Pete Hung. There I. One of the honestly one weekend on a nice note, but one of the best parts of the lying experience for me and everyone should start with the original it's it's the original. I had a lovely very magical time making the remake, but the original is the original. And Nathan did the Voice of tomorrow originally at an I, did it in the remake he reached out to me. We had so much correspondence while I was making lion king, and he was so supportive, and I grew up going to Nathan. Lane shows on Broadway. Wow, even before the majority of the world knew who he was, he was a big theater star before the age of the Lion King and all those things and he is just such a class act, and always so hilarious and. I just adore him and you hear a lot of stories about actors being like. Mean and this one. That one a lot of time does not true and he was. He's just incredible as a person and as an actor, and that was honestly one of the most thrilling parts of it. That's awesome, so he really handed over the mantle with with grace. I well, I wouldn't say he handed over the mets. Live and bribing, and on the latest season of. and He John Lewis Time you get. All is jobs now now. I temporarily I borrowed it I borrowed it from me. Yeah, no obviously Nathan. Lane is a legend. I didn't mean it that way, but I mean he is leading you into that. I mean, he could have been like you're saying stories of people in Hollywood. He could have been like I'm not talking to him yet. He he will he I barely know the guy I've met him a few times like there was no reason for him to reach out or anything. And he did, and we exchanged multiple emails. He went to see it opening weekend, and then literally apropos of nothing, because he had already had given me his blessing to do it and wish me luck. And then he went to see it like opening day, and I got like a five paragraph email from him with all these comments about my performance, it was literally out of nowhere and I. Literally I read it to my friends I was at dinner with them in like started like tearing up because I saw Nathan Lane on Broadway when I was twelve and thirteen right around the time of my Broadway. Music Wow. And it was just wild, and so he's the greatest, and that's always worth talking about. Yeah, that's great. I can't believe. I thought it was billy crystal only for a second. In my defense, we were watching Monsters Inc. and now we're jumping back and forth. There was a confusing time, but who doesn't want to be the Gay Billy Crystal. Hear worried. This episodes, not funny enough all there you go, thank you so much. Is there anything else you WANNA play. I'm good. Thanks so much. I appreciate it. And I caught some of it recently and to me even more than the actual shitting in the Saint, which is very funny, but it's it's Kristen Wiig getting fed the almond, or whatever yeah that her struggle in that scene. You can feel it like. She's really really brilliant in that movie I really think our whole performance in that movie was like Oscar, because she does all these heightened hilarious things, but she's very much a real person. Dimensional and she's just incredible. Completely agree that'd be. That was a corona virus. Meam that I saw her eating the. Off like people going to be no mass rallies three weeks later like no I feel. Like I swear, everything's good. I was like that is too good. Billy I. Feel Good. We feel like we covered everything that you'd like to cover. Yeah, I feel I'm sorry if I wasn't. This might be the least funny I've ever been. And so I apologize so funny. I was like. "Here's the compliment is I'm watching the Jon Hamm episode and you're going around asking people if you if they WANNA have a three way with you and Jon him, which is hilarious and I can see people writing that. And I could see people writing or at least informing you on the things about Jon Hamm like there'd be some Intel right. Ami It took him a while to get it He plays Don Draper. His wife is January Jones. I know you knew this stuff i. knew that stuff, too. Yeah I noticed when you're doing it is. There's no repetition someone who's not really natural, added or really gifted at like off the off. The hip thing is going to repeat themselves. You're going to do the same. Area of joke each time, but I'm watching, and it's four different interviews with Ham, and there's like this restraint. You're waiting for an organic moment. Now is the time to say you don't get touched on draper. What is on it until you need it? Whereas I'm like you think you could just have writers and be like. Here's the areas, but like that in the moment sort of diamond, the comedy mind that can be like now I say it took him nine times to get it because he will because you can see John Feeling kind of cool I'm going to take him down for fun and have him mud to the camera, and then I'm GonNa walk away like it. It was almost. If you think about it, it would be impossible to do so. It was just channeling into your natural talent in a way that really. Makes my jaw drop. I. Don't understand what's going on Oh. That's very nice of you. I mean to be honest. It was like I was kind of prepping for that job without knowing it since I was five years old. obsessively reading entertainment weekly and watching entertainment tonight, this was tree way pre Internet so I have access to like IMDB and Wikipedia, but like I was reading variety since the time I was like twelve years old I. don't even know why I don't come from a show business family. You know one day the newspaper stand when you go into a bookstore. Our magazine store I was like what is variety like. Oh my God cost like twelve dollars. Like, who are you? You're GONNA spend twelve dollars on this magazine I was like I need X.. They don't only list top ten movies at the box office that they listed the talk fifty. I would literally go through all fifty movies and look at the per screen average I. Mean My my dad was an accountant and my mom were for the phone company like they like entertainment. They loved shows and things. It's so they indulge me, but like I. Don't know where this came from. Was it to get on the screen? You just love the culture of show business, not just love. How do I do this well? There was that that came eventually, but like just in terms of sucking up years of absorbing all these facts about the entertainment industry, and then with billy on the street. I already had the information. It was all in my head. It was like fifteen years twenty years of bullshit facts about pop culture in which I was able to turn into this show and also, but I got to a point where I as an adult I said you know maybe this stuff. Isn't that important? You've been so focused on it. Your whole life and so much of the world seems focused on it, though he maybe this is something that you can both celebrate and mock at the same time like the urgency, and you're like irrational interest in this in what movies people went to see. Billy on the street was it was it? That's what I was like trying to point out young. And What a great example I mean! This sounds like I'm buttering your bread, but I'm like this is like graduation speech staff. I mean that because here we are in show business. We can kind of do what we want. If we don't know if it'll be a successful, we can try to do so you. Have this glove, or maybe you had this hand, and then you made the glove that fed like there wasn't necessarily a demand. People were like. Could someone love and skewer and be funny, but also you did what was in you to do like give any of us listening interested in creative endeavors define the thing that is written on their bones to do, and you loved show business, and then you can almost like graph at it's like then people's the the nation's interest sort of got closer to yours and you were ready to go in the ring. You know that's that's very true. And, but you know I've been doing it for years before we had a TV show and Ultimately. It did take a company like Funnier Die who contacted me like in two thousand ten like literally ten years ago. This August will be one night I got an email from Mike Farah. Who Runs Funnier, Dad I and you basically said I. I like your Youtube Videos. If you ever want to come and work with us, and of course I did. Live broke and all that. Normal Situation and So yeah, so, but we'll Farrell and at the time out of Mackay or running funny or die, and you know. This very hot company with this snl tradition, you know they all the now and all of that, but it did hey. It did take kind of getting approved the approval of the more mainstream comedy world, which Funnier die is in was part of you know to bring me into the room with TV executives and say no. We're straight and we think this guy at this loud shameless. A Guy with a gay sensibility is worthy. That's right getting a TV show and I for better or for worse, and I still think this is true and something i. I'm trying in my own small way to change is that it's great that we have. That were putting more gay characters on things, and that's grade and more gay actors can come out of the closet although they're still kinda punished for that. Sometimes, that's another different topic. We can get another day, but you know we're still in most circumstances, not the gatekeepers and we're still waiting for a more successful. Older White Man who's established in comedy? Whether it's Lauren, Michaels or Funny or die, who made my career or whoever's running central to say okay? We're ready for you now. Then NBA. Good feeling. I mean well I'm grateful for it I love. I love Funnier die. I adore them, but it's fall like. This is just the way of the state of our industry and why Ryan Murphy is such a Game Changer and I've gone to work with him now and whenever I'm about to work with him again whenever we can shoot things, but he's such a game changer, because it's not just that he's putting gay characters on things, telling LGBT centric stories are hiring trans actors and actresses. It's that he is the gatekeeper. He may have to answer to Netflix's now, but he has so much power like he is. He is Lorne Michaels. He is one of these guys, but there has never been a gay one right right and. So I think what we have to do now is like not that we don't want straight fans of course I. DO I think the majority of Billy on the street? Fans are straight to be honest. I gave gay guys are like way over me, but. I'm not edgy to them anymore. But what we have to do now is like start what we need more Ryan Murphy's. You know. We need to wooded Ryan Murphy through not relying on the old school gatekeepers if Forgive me for not knowing what shows Ryan Murphy. It sounds like he's a producer. Yes are you serious I am serious. Yeah, but I'm not. I'm not billion. Dollars early. No, that's amazing, named mom, so Ryan Ryan's like a major showrunner producer writer director he did his first big hit was well back in the day. Like NIP Tuck. Glee American horror story created American crime, story, people versus Oj Simpson. And now he's a big deal with Netflix when he did the politician and he has a ton a ton of stop hose..

I was watching difficult people just to get R- I had already watched, but I was watching and just to get in the in the billy eichner mood and I was like rewinding it i. wish you could get the data from Hulu. On how many people hit the fifteen back just to like saver specifically a burn. was like their, comedy, Can Be so. Tame it can be so neutered and what you guys did and what you do on both of those shows that I just mentioned is there's a real fearlessness, and and can be sort of salacious and exciting again and I'm wondering where. You learned that and how you maintained it. Because once you start getting more popular, it might be tempting to eat the Turkey on white bread sandwich, and just kind of coast and become a little bit more like some of the careers. You Make Fun of like Mario Lopez. That's the one I rewound where you said what my clown to have a name. Let's threatening and doesn't offend anybody. I am Mario, Lopez. I was like as someone in the business. I know the safe clay of staying away from even a joke like that, but you have like a a sharpness to you. Could you talk a little bit about that? And if you were ever like as the show went into the third season where you like? Ever worried like I gotTA start making. These jokes or we like this is just what we're doing. Well I'd say that shows. The shows were obviously happening at the same time. At least for a couple of years difficult people. was very much a Julie Klaus ner create, and she wrote it all. She created it. She produced it I. I would sometimes ad-lib and contribute to my own dialogue here and there, but sparingly and Julie, and are run our Scott King at some point. They wrote they wrote difficult people Julie created it and just invited me to play her best friend. So in terms of the creative on that show. Obviously I was very much along for the ride, and I loved it, but You know I wanna like Credit Julie for her. World Yeah and establishing that tone. Now Julian I met on billy on the street. We knew each other before that and we were mutual fans via social media, but we didn't really know each other until. Billy on the street got picked up a half hour, TV show and she was one of the first people I called because it was the first time in my life I was gonNA need collaborators. I couldn't think. Alba Games in the questions of things that we do I couldn't do it all on my own and we can only afford. It was so low budget especially at the beginning we can only afford like two or three people for a handful of weeks. Sit in a room with me. Figure out what the hell the show is going to be so called Julie just. Just because I was a fan, and I said billy on the streets, becoming a TV show, and will you please come work on with me? And she did, and she worked on with me for four of the five years, and then so so so the shows are a bit separate in that really helped conceive one obviously bussey difficult people very much Julie's work. To, get back to your question. It's funny to me because everyone always says in terms of billy on the street, and both shows to a certain extent, all your, you're like what you just said, and it's very complimentary. No all your fearless and you're willing to do. Things say things, Cetera. It's funny I never. First of all I'm clearly not fearless is a human being off camera. You know like we all have scared of I guess I'm not scared of certain things like going up to people on the street, but again I think it speaks to something. We talked about earlier. which is the fact of I grew up in New York City so those streets in Chelsea downtown? We very rarely go below forty aside above forty second street. Sometimes we'll go walk around the upper west side, but I grew up on those streets like I said I went to high school downtown. That's my home, so other people think of those streets is Oh, it's New York City and. Me and I'm like what do you mean people are being these? Are My people, yeah? So and again because I grew up. Having a lot of support among my friends among my parents, my family I I have this confidence and even ten years ago, which is when shockingly on the feet became a TV show ten years ago this year. You know there weren't in the past handful of years now we have this like whole movement of Lgbt, Comedians, and an openly queer actors, and and Trans Actors and actresses and Comedians, but this did not exist ten years ago on TV away. Does now I mean? There were a handful of gay people but no comedians with their own show, and especially a show that had such a gay sensibility..

"What I was wearing. The first two years of high school I could show you photos. I don't have one readily available. I never got my haircut. I had the biggest. NEWISH FRO as they call it. That you could imagine I mean if you saw pictures of me. It is the craziest hair and like I went to a really nerdy high school. It's a great school, but it's like very academically focused, so no one was thinking about sex, gay or straight, very few people in wasn't like a normal high school, and so I think because of that. It didn't matter what I looked like. Until all of a sudden, it did like one day I was like Okay I. Want to look at different wet like around puberty or something I! Remember this I I remember. My senior year in high school, I looked very different already than my sophomore year of high. School, That's like boy. I don't WanNa. Say the girls don't do that, but I always remember in my yearbook. If you look at the freshman girls. They got the memo earlier there. At the closing their appearance I, know I'm painting with a broad brush. This was just my school. The boys look like luck and they looked like they were hit by an ice cream truck, and some of the accoutrements stuck to them, and then by senior year. It was some effort, and that's what happens. You and I wonder to. Maybe subconsciously I never thought about this before I? Mean I kind of always in my head knew I was gay years before I came out the way all gay kids do. So I wonder. You know and I had a girlfriend junior high school on and off. Because that's just what you do, try to do at least by the way. This is the early nineties now some kids come out in like fourth grade, but that was not happening. I, wonder if because I wasn't really really actively wanting earls to find me attractive because I didn't really care. I didn't care until? Being gay became more of a reality and I knew that in college I just knew I was gonNA. Come out. That's when I started to care about how I looked I guess this is gonNa Sound like a joke, because I went to a religious college and I I mean religious, not in the way that holy cross is religious I mean like there was a declaration of faith and people were taking it seriously, Cheche. Fish. It helped me learn what tich means. Does it just mean what it sounds like? What is your tissues like the Nyu School of the art wall? On just? Areas. I thought you were making a sound effect like soda something. I should know oh now although it could be. It's just a Jewish last name of someone WHO's. Performing Arts School at nyu Anyway Areas I just knew there were so few people having sex. We just weren't having sex right. At least in my group, you saw less interest in looking hot. So people. Because what are you GonNa? Do about it, so you're a young man and you're like well. You. Tell me if I'm wrong, but like you didn't necessarily get the sense that there were viable other options for relationships, or you're like I'm going to grow my hair out like that was me in college. Yeah, I just think chair. It wasn't even a conscious choice to grow it out. It wasn't like a political statement like I. don't care about haircuts, right? It was just really didn't. I'm not thinking about it like so until someone pointed it out to me like time to get your hair I, was like Oh. Oh, yeah, okay, I guess. And your parents weren't the kind of parents that would insist that you got your haircut. No now. They were like very supportive Latino. They were very lovely. Sweet people very sweep people I grew up in new. York City so I was very lucky. In that way I mean if you're going to be a gay kid in the ninety s grow up in New York, city which is. Not, like every set of parents in New York, city is so gay, friendly or liberal necessarily, but chances are. They are more than the average person. My parents certainly were so I think they were just happy that I was like a big nerd, and like jared about school at wasn't trouble. Yeah. It's Kinda. Let me do my thing. That's one of the interesting things about my time in New York I. Obviously I visited a lot being from the east coast, but then when I lived there for seven years. It always struck me as strange phenomenon it Kinda goes both ways. One of course people are more tolerant to gay people. There's like gate neighborhoods that you walk through to get to. To your grocery store, it's not like an isolated right. It's not like fire island. It's like it's it's baked into the West village. It's a different areas into Chelsea, and whatever and then also the same thing with racial tolerance. Of course you don't believe that all fill in the race here do this behavior here because you actually know dozens and dozens of them because you live amongst them, yes. You also get this others. It's kind of like how Boston has mit, but it also has the weirdest most backwards almost like redneck type people. Yes, in New York. You like you're saying would have. You would suspect people to be gay friendly, because there's just every type of people, but then I have to think especially in the ninety S. there were families and people that you knew I I don't feel good or safe. Being gay in front of you or letting you know right? I mean like you'd think. Everyone would be peachy keen, but no. I was I was very lucky in this way. I I didn't know anyone.

A billion I again very briefly discuss something abusive. That happened to him in his childhood. Yeah I mean I mean by that I grow the corn and and I am harvest the vegetable oil from the fee. I earn I. I don't know why I got into this. But the actual chemistry of of making a good piece of popcorn is not uncomplicated. So you have to make sure that the oil is super hot that when and you do not a skill it you do it and like a little Pan Avocado oil or something. That has a high smoke point joking. I'm totally serious. Okay I'm one hundred percent serious and I prefer the white corn over the yellow corn slightly racist. But it's like it's lighter in texture texture and flavor and and so you get it super hot You put three colonels in there as soon as the first one goes you you dump the rest of it in there you start shaking and then you have to find a way to let the steam out as as it's going so you have to really work it so that no steam because if this team gets in there then then what has happened to the actual popcorn is it starts to get soggy really quick so if you can keep the steam out of there and get all pop really quickly and and then let it cool for two minutes. I'm telling you it is open Pandora's but I can't believe that you know I. Yeah I can tell. Well that's why you relate anybody you're talking about popular. He'll be well he'll no that's true. "After oh you what was the first you had said you know Frame of reference for what it will be an actor and how so what was your next move. How did you make the next move? You just was it a simple bliss going to get an agent well when you're in a program like NYU they're they're really smart about creating professional actors so they give you a lot of contacts. That's some of the alumni who have just left. Come back and visit and talk to you and not only that when you're in New York. I'm not sure if this is the case now but they used to do these called showings and so no cases they were showcased so Yale. NYU When I was in school we did ours on the same day so they would come to New York although the graduating class from Who that year included Paul Giamati? who was like he was the big standout that day? I mean everybody kind of like I tried to 'cause you're only doing seen so we try to come out and see what the other actors were like the one People wanted to see and obviously still given pam poor guy. Don't worry he'll come around. He's got professional actor training. So that is you know what he's going to have a long career. Don't worry about him. But so we we did these This showings where you basically due to scenes in front of Casting directors and agents in New York. That's right and then you get you know calls to go and that have interview is a huge leg up and starting I mean not just having the training but being here in New York so you're sort of on a professional career path so after Chabahar you didn't want to set. You didn't think to yourself. Oh I'll just go try. Try My hand on my mom She one of her close friends from high school was a director and my mom was really trying to help me make that connection and and so she was supportive. She was incredibly supportive. In fact my mom I would say it was by far the inspiration for me being an actor because She loved the theater theater so I was born in Long Island and we would always come into the city and when we finally when we moved when I was six we still made yearly trips. Oh I was picturing a life of like your dad's Griff for the vagabond family moving around the south you know there was you had ties to New York. You had major ties to New York order and and my mom was really invested in the arts and so I had oh I was like my way of fitting into the new schools because I went to eight different schools. By the time I had finished high school. And my way of fitting in was being a class clown And so that leaves you with No. Yeah at least with no dignity which is a great place to start as an actor. It's true you don't worry about your dignity is not a dignified profession in that way And so and you deal with just the vagabond lifestyle of starting over and charming. A new set of people know what's fascinating too. Is that would've imagined after that upbringing that I would. I not imagined I knew I wanted something really stable and it's fascinating like this is what I could find part of going through that personality. That was four hundred in. It's true that adaptability I mean you find that growing up. You seem like that we. We live in the same house. We were stable but I I don't know what to attribute it to. I was really short. I was really little. I too hard time kind of being seen shortest guy in my class. No Shit until ninth grade and then I wish take five Yup. We almost reach each other across the table. But we're too short limbs tweeden reefs across this tiny. Shell barely touched a couple of short actors actors trying to do a high five. Yeah I had I had and to me you were. You were a big movie star so to see some of this. Tiny little dominion well. I've worn lifts ever since because I just kept saying how I felt the same about you. Your name betrayed yeah. That's that's true. That's true. Speaking of names I've known you for I think eighteen seventy eight up is it. Yeah it's crude I I I still don't believe you. Eagle Scouts are amazing. It's slightly annoying obvious. I mean if I knew you were an eagle scout. I would have actually said yes to this. Oh yeah that's true. You never really shocked. He showed up. Yeah I I hope this isn't being recorded and I don't know this equipment is about rebounds. Oh this is just for this is a ruse. What rank did you get to? I think the one just before life like star Star Star always they said you know what I'm GonNa Stop Right here at star lifer or a bird flying high. Why did you leave scouts? Why do you subject same thing? Yeah I mean we do well and all my my mom busted a so bad me and my older brother because he was a scout as well well and he he was like you. He only had to complete one other thing before he became a scout. My Dad was super into the scouts to like he loved going on camping. TRIPS WITH US and Knives an Oh yeah It's cool. He loved it And loved absorb part of our our upbringing but at a certain point They had divorced and my brother and I then got into into video games. We come home one night and my mom looks said the two of US and goes so. How was boy scouts and like just internally I'm going that didn't sound like a front questioned uh-huh and she goes? I don't know about that but I'm young to really she's like your scoutmaster scoutmaster called in like I immediately broken tears So that was the end of scouts for me. Get your merit badge. Arcade Games At Arcadia Arcadia which brings us to our Katie S. was that the first big by the way I'm proud of myself for that segue that there's an incredible. You know what I might leave now because how are we going to do better. What's our time like? Oh Yeah we got about three minutes. Oh what was that. That was the big that was ah out of school and I did a month six months holy shit and I did a play. I got my equity card at I think it was purchase. Suny purchase purchase. Your I didn't know correct. I think clarifying yeah. This could have become a legal issue it was a sherlock Holmes mystery. It was a phenomenal production. I played the lurking Butler in the background. Who May or may not be having a relationship with his master? I could see that you'd be great lurking book. I rushed it. And that led me to a off Broadway. Production called America dreaming written by Tschumi Gal directed by Michael Mayor. Also with Joel Uinta. We're at the Vineyard Theatre. God and I kept seeing your face and so that was That was the first place I ever did a play in New York. No Shit I didn't know and then I did a independent movie called Grind with Well no it was it was it was with Paul Scholes and the late Adrienne. Shelly and Yeah she was Amazing using a lovely lovely person at Amanda. Tom Stoppard at this point had already done. Rosencrantz was in Cranston killed You're well aware of who he is absolutely and we've seen and scene study classes. There was so you knew what a potentially huge thing. Oh no question about it. Was that Lincoln Center directed by Trevor Nunn Other So it was really sorry. A Trevor Nunn was I think at the time the youngest person to occupy the head of the Royal Shakespeare Out And he was a already formidable figure in my mind so the idea that I could be doing. A play at Lincoln Center with those two was just outrageous. And then then you start to read it and the part is one of a kind is amongst the most beautifully written heroic parts that you'll find in you know but I I did the audition and Daniels. We gave me a a piece of direction and I just couldn't do it at the time like I..

It was a moment that like if ever I thought it was also funny because I had had this surge of confidence so I was like so the it was like a real real one eighty. Well I think life is about those moments you know. It's like everyone thinks they can do something until they can. And Ryo. It's true you try to be a football all player when you're in ninth grade and then you realize you couldn't what and you cut out for that I have. You tried to do stuff that you know. Our guest today Actually played very convincingly much more convincingly than I did in accepted he he played A rock star in the movie almost famous our guest today is one of my favorite actors. One of my favorite people billy crude up not a crowder now is Justin told me years ago it was. You insisted now brought up a long time ago. True for a long time I I didn't really know definitively and I've known billy we talk about this and spoil anything but we talk about. His name is last name. People are like for years. I've been doing it myself. Crude up crap. I had asked him to in in the past and it just didn't stick for some reason but anyway don't worry we'll get into how to even answer into their. He's just one of he's always been one of my favorite actors when I first started out out he was one of those guys that He was just breaking he was like the guy and I really. I really looked up to him. He's I saw so him. Once in one of the best things I've ever seen on stage was his his production of his portrayal of the elephant. Man He did it with no prosthetics Bradley Cooper. Where did another great then? Bradley didn't have prosthetics city. No nor did and they're both obviously very handsome men and they you you forget it within very handsome virtual cake. Who would you say more handsome? Billy yeah I think so too. Although I mean it's hard to hide he's Bradley's so much taller and as has that. I love what you just did. A motion with his hands. Like he was filling out his PECs. He he's he's bigger he's he's so hello Barani Man Bronco. Billy is a lot smaller. Yeah but but such a handsome face. Okay he's got such great Lake Gov features and bone structure. That's why I was surprised to learn that. He wasn't as tall as I thought he was. Too I remember meeting time and thinking that so oh strange that he's not taller because he is such a big president. The same thing in Tom Cruise. I did yeah so charming but also like and I had been a little bit more prepared for Tom Cruise. Because I heard about that tall but billy I didn't. I know there. Billy came up to me when I was I was a young twenty three twenty four it was up at a theater festival Williamstown I just seen Sam Rockwell. Do another one of the other. Great things I'd seen on stage He did a zoo story with Giovanni and billy came up to me and I was like Oh and I. I knew that I was aware of Billy's presence. Because I seen him. kind of milling laying around. And of course I knew he wasn't and such a fan and he came to me and he said he man I I I I don't want I'm sorry to interrupt you. I just WANNA say really loved eighteen galaxy quest and he paid me a like the most heartfelt and I. I was almost speechless. I I was so struck by it. I'm so thrown by it. It was like easily easily. That's a good not. All compliments created equally. God I know that's a good west. It was one of the best to this day. I never forgot that and And then I got to know him. I'm and it meant that it meant nothing to me than that I. It continued to really admire him. You should we talk a lot about his new show on what Apple TV. It's called the morning. Show why did I split space on that. It's really good and billy is great. It's the season. Finale is is a couple of days from now semper twentieth. Check it out the show. Is I think quite good and I think he is excellent at. He's getting great reviews. He's also Oh a Tony Award winning actor Multiple Tony. Nominations Great Theater actor great movie actor. He's been some great big movies. The watchman commissioner possible three you know what I would alienate movie. He's he. Does it all end for context because we talk a lot about this and I realized we don't really give context to it in the in the interview. He his big start came when he was cast in a play called. Katya Tom Stoppard one of the great living. Playwrights British playwright is Hedge had written Rosencrantz and Goldensohn are dead which was a huge head and This is maybe his biggest player. Certainly one of them and billy was cast right out of acting school in the lead role and that's how he came to prominence and he started getting cast and all these movies but just contextualized. Arcadia is and. It's very dent like Tom. STOPPARD's other place it's very dense. And he's a real. I mean he's like a what would you say his craftsman of words I mean. He's topper. Yeah he is a craftsman so and billy was able to received incredible reviews and was table to handle that Sophisticated dialogue in such a deft easy way and again like not to dwell on it but then you look at him and he's he's just looks I I can't you can't hear that in the interview but you can hear is beauty now maybe you can. That's beautifully is anyway. I I love him. I've I've just so happy. I got to sit down with them because there were so many things that I had occasion. Ask him as a friend is like just seeing him socially actually it'd be embarrassing to ask those questions like a party you're at a dinner with Anyway you'll hear my exuberance. He gets his saxophone of his career. Joining Scott guitar, h how you okay, yes. So the family by the end of Billy's life was not in a goods. Yes. Yes. And that's about all I had to say about he's life. And what really just remains is the discussion. I also I guess just want us to talk a little bit more about Middlebrook and how she chose to write about this. So hooked biography very much plays into common tropes about transpeople. Chiefly among them this understanding of someone who pauses agenda that went on assigned at birth as being deceptive. Basically tricking everyone around them. There's this constant language about being an actor Seattle, cool and putting allusion and so forth and ends up in this kind of like bizarre speculations that say a lot more about middlebrooks than they do about Billy Tipton. I think where she posits that. For example, the disguise itself was sexually exciting to Billy. How did she reached that point? And how did she kind of marry that with assertion that the motivation was professional? She doesn't really issue. Just get to that point. Where all the motivation was the proposed to music career. And then when that didn't hold up, I guess it must be a robotic fan. Yeah. I mean, I guess she's kind of a speculating about like, so if Billy Tipton is having sex with these women with a dildo like what's in it for you? So what she arrives at is that like more disguising off a man must have been the town on as opposed to like, you can have a fulfilling sexual relationship that isn't about you having an orgasm necessarily. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. So she goes on to make similar comments about him, for example, enjoying being quote, a voyeur who has gained illicit access to the object of lost and things like that. What what? So he's a boy of the women who is having sex with. So he the voice of his own excess. Yes. It's worded in this like awful contemporary psychology regarding. People as perverts, basically, it's bad. It's bad time. I like about time you won all the pass in in the bedroom having nobody can avoid. To give up another said, she never really thinks about the possibility that Billy like just wasn't man. And that this was genuine expression of his identity as opposed to an elaborate facade. If some of these women genuinely didn't didn't nerve a whole situation here. I feel you know, you could make a case for the fact that Billy should maybe told them, but I don't see how we go from this. We have to get like a leg complicated discussion that she doesn't really handle our except with lines like that playing them terribly in a sledge hammer like way, I think he's been a not to have foothold into ride that. Yes, she never really thinks about the possibility that like he's just a man this is nine nineteen ninety eight to clear like there. What trends activists who have Pronin at the time, and who she did reach out to she credit several of them for sound to her in her knowledge -ment? So I don't know what the hell she thinks she's trying to pull it's interesting that she did speak to trans activists Columbus. Then she's considered the possibility that really was trans is something she addresses a hippo. There is one passage where she truly considers whether or not this whole time. She has been writing a book about a trans man. And I'm gonna just read you that whole thing in full looking at Billy Tipton in terms available in the late twentieth century, we see someone who fits the profile of the female to male transgender Hristo female, gender Blenda that is a person with a female body, but in Daytona gender identity. A blend of traits. That is not simply a feminity in disguise and is not a lesbian identity Bilas success in the strategy raises..
