"So, I have a thought on music because the music is on and I love it. Last night, it is difficult. I'm laughing at myself. I admit it. Last night, for about two and a half hours, I was transported in my own home to my version of paradise. My audio guys were over and I was listening to some new equipment to make my already incredible sounding audio system, believe it or not, measurably, audibly better than it was. And you heard it. You got tears. It was really spectacular. Billy Joel, piano man. Good memory. Oh, not good memory. I knew the song, but you made me fall in love with it. And I now use it as one of my samplers to test out my system. That's so great. Oh, it is. Wow. If you heard it now, there is no question. It would be almost impossible to hear him live and hear him as well as you would hear him. I have heard him live and I was in the third or fourth row and your sound system is better. Yes. It was actually kind of, I mean, don't get me wrong. It was an amazing concert. I was thrilled to be there. But it's kind of abrasive when you're that close. When you're far away, you can't hear as well. But when you're right there. Yeah. Well, this is right there. We're not abrasive. Yeah.

I'm very excited very very excited A little bit about billy joel. He he grew up in levittown new york And he didn't really have any dreams about he took piano. He was he did the the classic nice jewish boy took piano lessons and did recitals and that type of thing. But it wasn't until. He saw the beatles perform on at sullivan that he was like. Oh guys do this. That look like me and they can put money and get money and not on the money they can get girls which was his big thing So i think it was like twelve or thirteen albums later. he's Legend that point and it is true. He has not put out a new album in almost thirty years. At this point the last one was nineteen ninety. Two's River dreams album with i. Still think is one of his best albums And he kinda decided that he didn't really want to You didn't have any Excitement for writing pop songs and instead what he ended up doing is becoming a classical composer. He did it as a Fantasies and delusions is his classical piano pieces that someone else performed for him but he wrote so he has a new career and he's been trout. He traveled to all over the world. I mean the fact that you can go to one of his concerts and still get amped up because of what they would consider. Oldie song is quite amazing to me. and in fact i did His face to face Tour with alan. John was actually the very first concert. Ever went to so It's quite amazing Rachel what was your. What is your experience with mr Jolan his music I mean heard it. My parents both loved him. And i think those kind of how it started with. I hearing that they played a lot like especially any parties like all my relatives like him. They know it all the songs and especially my mother. She's very good lyrics. And so i started listening to on my own too and i found i liked it. I didn't realize how much i listened to him. Honestly i started talking to other people might actually my age just like my parents age and i realized oh i know a ton of his own and i like them. A lot actually turns out here. I i play. Milan gets annoyed times. But i love it. I know my. I know my girlfriend gets out my girlfriend. My wife. my wife gets annoyed sometimes because She's not a huge fan. She likes the Innocent man album which has uptown girl and for the longest time but beyond that i mean we live in two completely different worlds where my wife and i agree on is obviously the beatles and after that everything else is up for grabs a beatles and weird al yankovic so in and so we're going to do a top ten list i both of us have four mentions the great thing about this and this is true aren't do not match artists do not match one bit and i really i love that. But here's the funny thing. And i noticed about this rachel's list predominantly are. The hits are the ones you hear on the radio. A lot which makes sense. I have a lot of deep cuts like my number one. Two and threes are deep cuts than not the hits there. They're the lesser known ones. But i like those a lot more. Billy Joel Proves He's Still the Piano Man While Playing Discarded Piano on Long Island Sidewalk
"I found out during the last segment when I was playing the mystery audio of Who's playing the piano on the side of the road, it turns out is Billy Joel. Who stopped last month when he saw piano discarded on a sidewalk. On Long Island in Huntington. And it was captured on video, the piano man himself playing a piano, playing an old ragtime songs Great and then enquiring about the piano that somebody had just left on the sidewalk. Well, so said, Hey, I had a Billy Joel encounter one time and Sue proceeded to tell me the story. Like so, we We gotta tell the the audience then we got to share this other show. So So had an encounter with Billy Joel. So you think it was? What, 1981? Yes, anywhere between 80 81. Why? What happened? What was your encounter with Billy Joel? You know, it's not a clock on a Saturday and he stopped after a few bars, and I'm like, okay, everybody knows that much. Keep going. I said, at least get to the la la lah di dah. Okay, So so s so he thinks the next verse and does, though the Lala did it, and I'm like, and then he did the things I know the whole course and everything I said okay. Battling Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs
"We're GONNA start our show today by taking a trip back to the nineteen eighties when singer. Songwriter Billy Joel was at the top of his game and he released two. Song Allentown about the decline of the steel industry. In America steel factories were closing in steelworkers. Were losing their jobs. The song shed light on the challenges the workers faced and at the same time. It made allentown a city in Pennsylvania quite famous so now let's fast forward twenty or so years. Two Thousand and one and Allentown is in the news again but this time it's because of an insect an agricultural pest from Asia had somehow found its way to Pennsylvania. The insect called the Brown rated stink bug feeds on apples. Peaches figs mulberries citrus fruits and other crops. Well it didn't take long for these tough little bugs to spread and by twenty ten. They wrecked havoc on orchards and crops in various parts of the United States. And the really bad news. Is that Brown? Mom rated stink. Bugs are still here and there on the move and they may soon arrive to a fruit tree near you. So what can we do about it? I've invited Tracy Leschi to the studio today to find out. She's an entomologist. And by the way an optimist as you will discover in this interview today. She's also the director of the Appalachian Fruit Research Station at Cairns Ville West Virginia. Her research is focused on the development of behaviorally based management tools for invasive and native pest of fruit crops. I'm so glad to have you here. And hopefully you will shed some light on these mysterious bugs. Oh my goodness so. The Story Starts Allentown. Can you tell me a little bit about that discovery? What was happening around then here. So you know Brown Mama Rated Stink Bug as you've already mentioned is a species that is not native to North America. It's native to Asian countries including China Japan Korea and Taiwan. This insect is an excellent hitchhiker And we'll probably get to that in a little while but at some point in the to late. Nineteen nineties homeowners. In and around the Allentown region of Pennsylvania were Seeing some interesting invaders in the fall to their homes and in fact these were Brown. Mom rated stink bugs. Now the issue was is that they weren't properly identified until two thousand one when Karen Bernhardt who with Penn State cooperative extension in Pennsylvania collected some of these specimens from a homeowner and she ended up sending them to attacks honest Rick Holbeck at Cornell and he identified them as Brown mom rates. Think so this was the first official record of population in North America. So how on Earth would they have gotten there? How did they get to these people's homes right so one of the interesting things about Brown mom rated stink bug is that they are excellent hitchhikers as adults and that means is that they can sort of end up being concealed and hidden from view and sort of take a journey to somewhere else and this is related to what we as entomologist refer to as their over wintering behavior which is essentially like hibernation for insects. So when these insects hibernate more or less they crawl into cracks and crevices and hunker down and wait for spring. And if these cracks or crevices happens to be in some sort of shipment of goods or perhaps in your suitcase or who knows This is how often these bugs have been transported to new locations. Whoa so how quickly would they spread? So let's say or what a what a thought. Let's say it's in your suitcase. You've gone on holiday to China. Or whatever he brought back these little hitchhiking bugs So let's say you have one bug or two bugs what happens then. How quickly would they spread? Well if you found one or two bucks I'd tell you to kill them I but You know it's a good question. They have a pretty good Reproductive capacity that sort of what we say in terms of you know how quickly can a population build up? Based on the reproductive efforts of a female a single female can lay up to twenty eight eggs at a time in in an egg mass. And she can lay up to four hundred over her lifetime. So you can imagine if you know. Just a portion of those eggs survived to adulthood and then reproduce. You can see that. A population could build rather quickly so is is that what happened like You know how quickly did this problem spread? You said it started sort of in the late nineties. It was discovered two thousand and one. And then what happens? Well what happened? After that was it was a slow spread And it was a slow build up for a number of years so in two thousand and three I found the first specimen officially outside Pennsylvania in Maryland. Just south of Allentown Pennsylvania. I in in sort of central Maryland in a town called Hagerstown There was some. Also some official detections in New Jersey and then it continued to spread through what we refer to as the mid Atlantic here in the United States and to Virginia West Virginia You know parts of Delaware Into upstate or sort of well. I should say downstate New York so the populations continued to build Over a number of years and then you know really began to build quickly back in two thousand eight two thousand nine and in two thousand and ten throughout the region. We really experienced what we refer to as an outbreak population. So what did that look like Especially if you're growing cheese. Yeah it looked well you know. When we first began to detect problems in fruit trees from Brown mom raided stink bug and say two thousand eighteen thousand nine. The issues were confined really to the late season. Where just before harvest and this is really painful. If you can imagine your fruit just about ready to be picked from the tree almost ripe. We were seeing large numbers of adult invading the orchards in the fall and feeding on the fruit and this was causing for some of our local growers up to ten percent loss. Even back then but in two thousand and ten we saw the bugs invading earlier much earlier actually just after the fruit had formed just after pedal fall essentially in these orchards. In that early season feeding really set up our growers for significant losses. Where you know for our Peach Growers. Many growers lost their entire crops. Most lost half of their crop. And then it just went on from there. You know apples and Incurred ABOUT THIRTY SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS IN LOSSES. Thousand and ten just locally. That's terrible was the fruit. Not salvageable at all. I mean what what do these Brown marmalade stink bugs due to the fruit? Yeah they are you know. They are a typical stink bug species in that their mouth parts are essentially a straw and they insert that Straw into the fruit tissue and they inject some salivary enzymes that essentially helps break down that tissue and suck out the juice and so what they leave behind. Is this dry corky tissue beneath the surface of the skin as well as discolored display depressions on the surface now for peaches because the feeding Began so early essentially once you peel that fruit. The entire fruit was riddled with these deep pockets of dead comey tissue and you know. The entire fruit was essentially unsolvable. It was just a complete loss. For FOR APPLE. Growers some of the fruit could be redirected to From sort of a fresh market to juice market. But you know they're getting Cents on the dollar in terms of the value so in essence they're losing over. Ninety percent of the value of that fruit have normally gone into fresh market. So it was very

Is the Link Between Depression and Serotonin a Myth?

And then they talk about inflammation it's it's it's as if depression isn't a chemical If depression isn't a chemical imbalance what is it. One theory gaining. Traction is that it has to do with inflammation and I'm thinking of the book the inflamed mind and all these other things that I read everywhere and I do believe that I do and I've seen it firsthand from people in my family that have taking CBD or tumor just lost some weight or started eating better and their mental health improves as well. Absolutely once you mitigate inflammation through diet through lifestyle through sleep then things start to to to even out a bit more because your body's inflamed Cintas fight or flight state as it is so then you couple that with things outside of it in life and it's going to just make it worse and here's here's a little more on the SS ours are is the SS arise. That depression was caused by low levels of neurotransmitter and two years later other researchers singled out serotonin and so it says if a chemical is linked depression than the drug industry could produce another chemical to adjust the balance and so research began to research into SS. Our eyes as began but neuroscientists were doing their research to and they were unable to find evidence that supported the theory. Clinical researchers didn't fare fare. Any better studies have depressed. People found that their serotonin levels were the same as in healthy controls and even when when Saratova Serotonin levels calls were D- habilitated Excuse me I'm really butchering this. You know okay you know what I'm having. I had my teeth cleaned this morning. And what does that have to do it. But I'm having like this is weird thing with my lips. No I'm serious like my lips aren't pronouncing words right anyway. Okay so let me go back. So so even when Serotonin levels were deliberately lowered. The participants didn't become depressed. Convert conversely depress people given very high doses of Serotonin didn't see any improvement in their symptoms. Even the psychiatric profession quietly agrees. It's Bible that the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders doesn't list Serotonin as a cause of depression. While the American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry Sites serotonin deficiency as an unconfirmed hypothesis right. But we also know now about genetic expression how you can turn genes on and off so just because you maybe you might have the gene for depression or anxiety or whatever your your lifestyle your diet your stress levels and you'll recovery can turn on or off those genes in childhood childhood trauma that they address like see. I told you I can't tickets. But that's the thing like they were. They're looking at one thing they're looking at Serotonin. Of course you're not going to fix visit with one with a silver bullet right. The you have to look at the entire holistic picture of this thing. Yeah holistically so under the M. I didn't. That's that's such such such a great point it is because that's what we do here. We talk about holistic and alternative. How so it goes on with this inflammation? Depression isn't a chemical imbalance. What is it one theory gaining? Traction is it has to be inflammation and we already talked about that. But researchers at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana tested the theory that when they assessed early childhood had experiences and depression among one hundred seventy seven young offenders at a juvenile detention center in Russia many were suffering from depression and the researchers discovered vert a correlation between the severity of their condition and the extent of childhood trauma such as punishment hostility parents on justified criticism and lack F- respect. Absolutely that's a subconscious programming especially when your child we don't even realize is happening right. I don't know why I'm depressed. Nawab sad all the time. Well you know so And that goes for For Schizophrenia too. You can be predisposed to that. It's in my family genes. But why did I not get it. And why did my brother My brother Jerome Jerry. Jerry data will. Jerry was sexually molested as a child when he was an altar boy with the Catholic Church and so and that caused a split your body holds trauma holds traumas going and it happened repeatedly. He was an altar boy for many many years. Okay and it was.
