"Roster. So I tried to limit my position players. Yeah, they did. So I tried to limit my position players to per movie. Also, I didn't put any minor leaguers little leaguers. Therefore, you know, concern of people calling you out for your, just that's all good. Well, can I explain you what I was thinking? Okay. That was it. So let's put it up. Okay, so first base we got Stan Ross from mister 3000 actually mister 2999 played by the late great burning Mac and second I got Mickey scales from little big league former Yankee three O 9 with 30 dingers and 98 rivers got I'm sorry, that's Sam tunnels that I just gave you for love of the game. We got Benny the jet Rodriguez from the sandlot. He was good. Yeah. Roy Hobbs from the natural course. Bobby rayburn from the fan. And T. Rex pennebaker from mister 3000 T. Rex was like Barry Bonds in that movie. For catcher, you know, I kind of did a little TJ swerve here. I went with dotty hints in front of the league of their own. She was outstanding. Great could call a game great bat handle the pitching staff well. And a DH who do a split catching the pop up too. I mean, she did that for fun. And who else at DH, but Pedro Serrano from major league. You don't have anybody from bull Durham, huh? Well, bulldog was that they were minor league, so I didn't put them. You want to win games is what you're doing games. That's what I was trying to explain at the beginning and I didn't put them in. I like that. But there is someone from bull dorm, and you'll see why. Okay. Now let's look at the pitching staff. Okay. You get the pitchy staff, okay. All right. Billy Dee Williams, as bingo long in the bingo long traveling all stars and movies. I don't know if you've ever seen that movie folks. Oh, you've never seen that one about a group of Negro league players who decided that they just wanted to travel on their own and they went around James Earl Jones, Richard Pryor, great movie. Billy Chappell, Kevin Costner for love of the game. And then rookie of the year, Henry, Rowan Gartner. Gotta have him. And Henry rero away when Rosenberg steamed Nebraska from

"I read the newspaper. I don't mean that. I mean, in living life, leave your block, leave your community, leave your state, go to please go to somewhere other than Miami, go to the Midwest, randomly. Utah is a beautiful place you wouldn't believe it is plenty of black people there. Like go to other places and just see how other people live. It's a reason why Dave Chappelle lives in Ohio, but all that money in the world, you know, there's something beautiful there for him. He talks about what his neighborhood is like, go to other places and talk to other people and hear other black people hear how they live and how they're feeling. I am telling you, you will be educated and you will be exposed to greater opportunities and ways to live abundantly and grow your life. Okay, so enough of Carter G Woodson. Please. Sex symbol. No. International man of does anybody even know what he looks like? Sex symbol. Okay, he's bald. He's balding. He's got is he alive? Exactly. As I'm saying you say, he wasn't always bald. There was probably a point in time when he might have been fine. Oh, Claudia Woodson was the man. He's like Billy Dee Williams. And lies. Of 19. Oh my God. Okay, I don't know if we've ever talked about this on air, but we're gonna talk about it now. Alan, right? And Alan's, you know, a heterosexual man. But Alan gives specifically his friends, but when it comes to men, he's always like, oh, don't you think he's cute? Tiffany, you all think he's cute. Because you've already given Carter G Woodson Billy Dee Williams. So Alan and always like, he's so cute. And I'll turn around and he will be one of the most unattractive human beings. I've ever seen. I'm not even talking about your Friends. Just human beings walking to earth. Alan is quit. He does only does this with men because he never does it. He was like, don't you think he's cute? Look at that guy. Look who's just walking there. He's cute. You don't do things cute. He's never cute. We were never on the same page with his Allen's. Definition. Of cute is way too liberal. I say this to say, recently we did a job interview. Right? We had a job interview for one of our dry cleaners. And I was already in a meeting. Allen was outside with the candidate, and he was texting me like, okay, our candidates here. He's really cute. And I'm like, here we go. I already knew what it was. I already knew what he ain't listening. We didn't employ him. So there's that. Alan's gassing him in my sex messages. I'm like, I already know what I'm dealing with. So I'm not expecting much. This man walks in. Killing the game. Not at all. He probably looked like Carter G was it. He absolutely, it was a mess. So I'm positive that he doesn't look like Billy Dee Williams. Okay. You know, ever take Allen's advice. I don't have a personal friend of yours, and he's trying to hook you up with somebody. Don't do it. Yeah. 'cause he doesn't look good. Another compliment for somebody's like, yo, you looking, God, you looking like Carter cheese, good. Oh my God. Okay, but either way, moving off a Carter G Woodson. Please. Okay, gentlemen of quality. Okay? Other lies that we've been told, you know, like right now there's a big push for diversity. George Floyd's death really prompted this discussion of diversity, in corporate America. And a lot of the discussion is around, well, you know, there's the browning of America. There's a lot more LatinX and African Americans. We need to start hiring to reflect what the world is starting to look like.

"A guy eating a piano. Did you see that agent who described the guy who would eat a baby shark? And then throw it up back into like a jar in the shark would just swim around afterward. Yeah. I mean, that was vaudeville. And like you said, they had to lay it out in such a way. It wasn't just Willy nilly. It was very intentional. And apparently the first act to be the first act of the last act wasn't a great sign. For you. Well, probably what it probably meant is that you were either brand new or just not very good and you didn't really have a great act, but they needed somebody because the opening act would be kind of the seating act, like people are still sort of getting in their seats and doing their thing. But they wanted to have something up there. I was about to say on the screen on the stage. And then the last one, which is hysterical and goes counter to every showbiz rule now, which was like leave them with something great. They wanted to purposely leave them with something not so great so they could just turn the house over and get people the heck out of there. And they wouldn't be like more and more. Encore. So they would, it was like in Mexico grill in Athens when we would crank public enemy or some really heavy metal or something at the end of the night just to get people out of there. For sure. They called the last act on the bill the haircut act because that performer would just see the back of everybody's heads on their way out. To be clear, we love to public enemy, the people that dined at mexicali hated it. Sure. People be like, yeah. Why should play in public enemy to get people out of there? If you need the clientele, it makes Callie griddle in Athens in the mid 90s you'd know. Yeah, some email are just like, oh. Yeah, save draft. No. So what that meant was that second to the last act is what you would look at as sort of the best act of the night. And so headliner. Yeah, that could be like a really big name. It could be Harry Houdini on any given night. It could be Al Jolson for better or for worse on any given night. Like a huge, massive star. Like the people who were who were the second to last act on a bill at a big vaudeville theater in a big city were probably the most famous people in the United States and Europe in a lot of cases. Like they were as famous as you can possibly get legendary in their fields, beloved by all, like, and you could go spend ten or 25 cents depending on how good the show was and see those people like in your neighborhood, you know, depending on what city it was. Because like you said, the whole thing that kind of spread vaudeville far and wide was the fact that they created these circuits. And so you didn't even necessarily have to live in a big city to see these people live. Because if you had a theater in your town that was part of a circuit that originated in New York, they might end up there performing as the second to last act on the bill. And well, I mean, we'll talk more about circuits in a minute, but I just got very excited about that. Yeah, let's go back to racism. Yeah, okay. Smart. So we made the point that I don't know if we made this original point. When someone was doing what you would call an ethnic dialog act or a dialect act, they would go up there and do this racial ethnic stereotype. And it could be anything. It was like nobody was safe. It could be a big Italian guy doing this the biggest spicy meatball thing. That's the only one I'm allowed to do, so that's all I'm going to do. Now it could be like German. Irish, in any sort of European immigrant, they could be making fun of Jewish people, Chinese people, Native Americans who also had, as we'll see, their own circuit, and they would also make fun of themselves. So it was interesting in that it was sort of a, it was sort of the great leveling ground in that no one was really spared. Right? Right. And a lot of ways it was because a lot of the members of those same ethnic groups, like I was saying, performed those dialect acts. So they were really hamming it up and really going over the top with these stereotypes of their own ethnicity. And even blackface, depending on the context, was depending on who was doing it was antiracist, because one of the overlooked things about blackface is as far as vaudeville is concerned, there were a number of African American vaudeville performers who did blackface and actually preferred to do blackface because it changed everything. It said we're in an alternate universe here and the rules are kind of out the window. Right. And then they could all of a sudden do a take on a satire, let's say, about the white guy who's running the vaudeville show. And get away and get away with it. Yeah. Or make fun of the idea of blackface done by white people. Like make fun of blackface acts as a blackface act performed by an African American. So yeah, it gave them a lot more leeway to just kind of set things straight a little more. But the history of blackface is terribly horribly racist. But everything leading up to vaudeville and some vaudeville acts were still terribly racist, but the stuff leading up to it was indisputably violent racist. Yeah, absolutely. One of the biggest stars in the early 20th century was a black man named Bert Williams, very handsome, smooth, cool looking dude, if you look at pictures of this guy, he's like, he's like the Billy Dee Williams of his time. Billy Dee Williams? Did I get that right? Yeah, okay. I don't know why that sounded wrong all of a sudden. You ever do that? Yeah. Like you'll say, and you're like, what? It's called semantic satiation. Oh, really? You do or say you're speak something so much that it just loses its meaning and doesn't look right spelled and all that stuff. You know what I thought I got it wrong actually just figure it out because in my head I had D as D period like an initial and not DEE. Like D Wallace, Billy Dee Wallace Williams. Anyway, he kind of looked like Billy Dee a little bit, very smooth looking guy. And he was the first black performer to star to star in the ziegfeld follies, which was one of the biggest vaudeville reviews in New York City at the time. And he and also all white too. Well, yeah, exactly. That's why it was important that he was the first black performer. Sure. But he did blackface, of course. And he was on record as saying, he said, quote, it was not until I was able to see myself as another person, and I think he's meaning blackface that my sense of humor developed. So for him, I think he said it to come out of his shell sort of comedically fully. Yeah, they covered him really well in that PBS documentary and there was a quote from W.C. Fields. No word what Tony Danza had to say. But W.C. Fields said that Bert Williams was the funniest man I ever saw and the saddest man I ever met. Oh, interesting. And what he was referring to is that Bert Williams is called the Jackie Robinson of vaudeville because he broke that color barrier was the first one, but he also seemed to feel like the weight of history on his shoulders and he just worked tirelessly to prove that he was at least as good if not better than any white woman performer. And supposedly, according to this PBS documentary, essentially worked himself to death at age 46. Oh, wow. Yeah, but he was a great talent and even in his time he was considered just a legendary star and comedian. Beloved

"You know, whatever. Tall is like, well, I guess your soldiers now, like, I would have turned around and punched in the face. My homeboy just died. To be you guys. And you'd get to do a little flippant. Yeah. She would have been doing it with several less teeth and a bloody nose. Should have been. So yeah, this basically a big rescue operation heist slash Obi-Wan trying to rediscover his fourth powers. Also, centering on third sister's attempt to win favor and become the high inquisitor grand inquisitor, whatever. And so, you know, you see a little bit of Leia's power resisting her and attempts to probe her mind or whatever do the Charles Xavier thing with her. Kylo ren. Yeah, kylo ren, which was I think the first time we saw that power anywhere and was in the force of wagons. And then yeah, you see a little bit of Obi-Wan's lightsaber Jedi skills. He kills like a probe, droid or whatever. But yeah, pretty quick. Yeah. Yeah, he pretty much just got some blaster practice in. Pretty quick episode. I thought, kind of a filler episode, a little bit. Yeah, this was expose. It was lost. I was Nick Apollo. Do you mean exposition? There's an episode of lost with the two Brazilian characters. They had never been anything up until then. They showed up in this one episode. It's like, who the fuck are these people? Because it's like 20 people on the island. It's these two rando Brazilians who were involved in some kind of a diamond thing. And she was on a TV show, Billy Dee Williams. And her catch phrase was like, rattled dazzle. So it sucked. It was like, what the hell is wrong with it? I guess they had wrote that episode or they had wrote the characters in the loss and they were going to have a storyline with them. And then everyone just were like, who in the fuck are these characters? And they're like, well I guess we got to kill them off. Look at this made an episode and it was never spoke of again. Yeah. And it was like the biggest filler episode. It was kind of a good one. I enjoyed it. No, yeah. But it was just like, it made no sense to the story. Yeah. It was like, well, here's just 40 minutes of TV. Yeah, I didn't like, you know, introducing new characters and immediately justice for art that got killed at BlackRock, trying to mess with the dynamite. Anyway. Can we tune into our lost podcast?.

We've got Diana Ross, and we've got Richard Pryor playing piano man. Right around this time, really, my brother, if I didn't have my brother, none of this would have happened. I just would have been home like, you know, listening to the Monkees or something. Do you know what I mean? Which I also enjoyed as a child. I did too. But it's a different level. It's genuinely a different level. It's like it's enjoying because this stuff is art. It's genuinely it's artistic. Yeah. And they're benchmarks for times in music. And in Seoul and in funk and in R&B, that are phenomenal. So my brother says, hey, after school one day, hey, tonight's the NAACP Image Awards. They're having them, and I don't think it was the door to the channel or pavilion because it was somewhere where it was like how the Golden Globes are like tables everywhere. Yeah. The circle ten. Yeah she is incredible. I'm so happy. I hope she gets her big marvel or or whatever. It is payday. Because she's a fucking extraordinary talent. Yeah judy shattered by the way the effects of this would really well done. You know scrubs. We weren't a big v affect show and sometimes when we did them they looked like that butterfly but this was really. Well done shattering grim. I remember this. I remember shooting this episode. I remember at the end. When you're when mandy runs is over in the corner crying. I remember my point of view from it. I don't remember ever watching this episode. But i remember shooting it and to see the opposite side. I remember standing near and making jokes while the two girls ran over. And i remember that the camera was over there and to see all of that was was crazy. Are you know why. I remember it too. Because of one of my most favorite action stars ever in any movie. I talk about billy dee williams more than i. Should you know what. I mean like no you don't you in all seriousness. It was very significant for you. You said when the star wars universe there was this african american hero right. And i really like puts you. You've ever black guy in star wars as more like the fact that he just spoke. You know you know. Billy these african american that that was dope too but just to finally see a black face star. Wars was amazing and also not just not just that he was also frigging like one of the dopas pilots in the universe and then when harrison ford when harrison ford's character's removed they use him as that character to show you that it could work you know and that was really dope like a lot of people that we don't talk about that enough to be honest with you. They remove the han solo. Character and in place is landau cal ricin and you learn to love this character by the end of the year like dude. I love this dude. You know what i mean. And that's that's that's really important and it was a black guy and we don't really talk about that enough and georgia's and given enough credit for that also because when glenn charman was on the show. He told us that story of how he was up for han solo. And the reason why. I didn't work was because you know there's going to be a white princess laya and america's not ready or the world's not ready i should say for that and and he really showed. You could be ready for if you really if you really just closed not closure is but if you really fell in love. I don't know how to put this man if you really just. He put it in the movie the and it made it. It made the movie twenty times better also. I just look at the things that billy dee williams does in this in this show where he gets his reaction to go on. Landau cal ripken if you watch empire strikes back. He's has so much expression in the movie and give so much freaking. His performance is masterful. It's one of my favorite movies ever. Obviously you can tell but to have him on the show and to have that performance and to know that this could work you could have a black action hero. Somebody who does all of the things that the white guy does you know to have that in in that movie and then to have him on the show was just like beyond incredible so my reaction it. Rely reaction is sincere. That's not me. That's me fucking on. We know for real for real screaming. At the fact that i'm in a scene with billy dee williams aka linda today if i was directing this episode. I would've made sure to hide him from you. Did they hide. No no no he was he was in our face. He was in my face the whole time. I mean i was just seeing that quentin tarantino What's his name that amazing german actor.

It realize it had value of any kind. But but that's not my story. So i have most of my celebrity encounters are either politicians because because of my job and athletes. So i have one really favorite probably of h. I'm gonna let you pick which one i tell in this episode. When our option. I get asian politician you. Let's do it okay. Politician all right so picture greenwood south carolina. I'm like i'm their nineteen ninety nut. Avoid it was wasn't very good here. It was a very good year. Neither view herbie on american idol. This is gonna be about one of my first big interviews right. This guy was like. I'm gonna have him come by the radio station so you can. You could interview room. And i was like. Oh wow okay great. Many years he was ir and then congressman and senator. All that. I'll i'll ask i. I knew some about him but my dad was a super knowledgeable. Man in mo- almost issues but politics particular to hate. He gave me some background. And i was like all right. So i'm told that great so friday john mccain will be coming into town and at and at this point he has just announced his first presidential run. I had of the two thousand presidential election south carolina's courses One of the is the first in the south primary. You have iowa. I think they have the hawkeye hawkeye to start things. Then you have new hampshire. Then you have south carolina so and and this is a very red state so you get lots of republicans that visit here anyway. But so this is. He's just announced that he's running for president and this is going to be one of his first stops instead of south carolina gripe to get by and i get the blue so he'll be coming by your radio station friday at four o'clock and then he'll be doing whatever he does. Go into a couple of events. And then he's going to this fundraiser for this state house rep that evening and i think the state house written may have also been a veteran. I think that the tie on. But so i've really chided. I actually like put on a clean shirt. Because oh because this was a dual job i had i was news director and also wacky afternoon disc jockey now for the word right wacky operative word so they lose to say in the afternoon. I was not dressed. Usually and but in this case we've got a senator and presidential candidate coming now being very young and new to news. "Excellent i can most some of the other characters. I was like. Oh that you know. Some of the storylines and stuff. I'd have to go into each one in particular. But now i'm just a fan. I get you know you know love and ditching mon strikes me you know. I don't have much much nothing to say that any of those things go. Thank you so much for your time. This has been wonderful talking with you. Plus you talk to you and before to hearing hearing that when it's done if you'd like to give about any other movies like we're done too skinny holler and that we do have these great moments of humor in harrison to bits. I mean we've got the joke of the the guys getting choked by darth vader. We get the repeating joke of the millennium falcon being able to jump to hyperspace. We even get like. I think they're repeated lines was Hansel oh sing. it's not my fault and then landau says the same thing later on. yeah. I love those. Then you know. Like the lifeline of i know when he's about to be frozen in carbonite. That is probably one of the best moments of the film if not of the entire series. It's so great in so hans solo and it just fits it all of those lines. All those comedic moments fit in the character. They don't feel like they needed to put in funny moment. 'cause i just had a heavy moment old vice versa. Like that's what some of the sequel movies kind of fall into that. That problem his joke because it was just a bit serious then. So we're going to lighten things up now our now it stock again so we need one more but not all of this stuff wolf fits in with all of the characters perfectly you completely by the lions who ever saying them. We'll have a character. Is it pushes. That character ford pushes. the story. forward is not just light relief for the sake of it reminds me of reading about star trek the next generation when somebody would come in and write an episode and if an actor had probably be. That's not that's not how my character talks. That's not something they would say but in a new hope it's like everybody kind of spoke this with the same voice and here everybody. Every character was written to feel as if they were individuals and it does make a huge difference. You get a lot of technical gobbledegook and a new hope. And i know. Like carrie fisher. She still couldn't well. She doesn't complain anymore but she was complaining for years about the whole speech about the ion and like oh this was this line was horrible and i had to memorize this whole thing and it was just a really bad but then the rest of it i mean it just does feel much more natural to them and you know even those little like verbal tics like console though when it's like you know like does that little task of his teeth before he's like you know and of course you don't know what i'm talking about as he goes off in the corridor. Yeah all of. That's feels in them together on the millennium falcon when she's doing those repairs and he's just macking on her so much and just like my hands are dirty to that became a bit of a lion amongst the crew and the special effects guys as well they just you know you'd be a restaurant and somebody's out. Could he possibly the napkin and everyone got my hands. Dirty to rely just became. It became a thing for everyone on that movie. Everyone said it just became the the catchphrase of the shoot. Love that scene at luv C. three po castle being the cock blocker in there. It works well and it keeps. It keeps a. Pg we don't we don't have any sort of weird love thing going on. I mean there. Yes he feels a little overbearing at times. But i think she's into it and so it's not like he some sort of weird pickup artists. It's not like he's got this sick obsession with her. Like anikin had with pad may where you're just like. Oh run girl get away from there. Yeah yeah no. It's definitely there's definitely. I guess i guess the word would be consent on both sides of yom. I'm i'm okay with this. Until i tell you i'm not and that works. Said like you know. He knew he couldn't have you know sex scenes because in installs movie a kiss is the equivalent in. He couldn't have this slushy stuffy the so just that one scene and just the words they speak to each other as he's going into the carbonite is enough. We know where we stand with characters to don't need to go any further one her taking care of him after he's been tortured to. I really like that that moment after that torture scene and end right before to the whole thing of tobacco trying to put together c. three po. Just all of that stuff on best. But i think it works really well and landau billy dee williams really makes you feel like he and han. Solo had been friends for a long time just that report that they have and i love that little joke. That psych out that he does where it's like. You got a lot of nerve coming back here. It's just like oh that's that's nice and that how almost punches him and then hugs them instead. It's like oh this is really really really works and you immediately no. You can't trust the guy just that just that one line you're completely by this guy. This note about this guy really might something's going on here and Yeah again just brilliant writing the you know the pushes the character ford with every line. Because you see in how solis face like fuck. What's he talking about. Because i did so many bad things which bed thing is does you know about the robot but that seem when when hence sellers torture. He comes back in and she's caring for him. Harrison is great in that said. He looks absolutely fox. The fixed like he's really been through it. I think customers says on one of the common trees that he was really impressed with harrison's acting in that point because he really does look like he's been through the wringer and one his little line like i feel terrible. I just love those line readings. Id dozen how he so confused like. They didn't even ask me any questions. Like just wanted to torture. That's such a terrifying line isn't it. it's like a. Why are you doing this. And then you find out that luke can actually feel his friends pain or or have a vision about what's going on. And it's like oh raiders. Playing along gamer is chairman. The water we talked a little bit about like special editions and stuff. I actually didn't mind the re introduction of the wafa that they did where they took the guy who has like a normal sized person and put him in a cave that looked way too small so now he looks huge. I thought that that looked pretty good. Because while most because of his guy in a suit rather than a big cg creature. I think the empire strikes back came out the best of all of the special editions. Actually i -member with eagerness waiting for them to come out in nineteen ninety-seven being a bit concerned about what would happen to star wars empire strikes back. It really feels like you know. They just punched a few holes in the walls to make cloud city look a bit more expensive. They've added the warm perrin but it isn't changing any plot elements isn't changing any of that kind of imagination because we've seen outside of cloud city ready so having a window that doesn't really change things right in a follows logically like if you have this view why would be solid. Yeah and they would have done it had. They had a been able to do at the time. But jabba the hut scene you know installs is just a repetition of the scene. We've just seen with greta. And i can understand why you might want to make maasai see a bit more expensive but then you have the stupid. John was swinging in the the robot punching the other robot. And i'm so glad there's none of that any strikes by and i'm happily watch pop from the i think the color great on it was a bit might be when he first came out and made the will of the hocine very very blue. I still find it quite watchable. Actually that special edition the edition for me. You know how wrote one closed that plot hole that glaring plot hole that everybody talked about for years. I remember talked about for years. I never thought there was a black hall. But but the special edition of empire closed that plot hole. How did vader get back to the star destroyer have got you know..

"The fifteen by fifteen grid. So how can the crossword world become more inclusive in. Think the box or in this case the fifteen by fifteen grid for that and more. I'm joined by k. Austin collins a film critic at rolling stone and crossword constructor for the new yorker the new york times and more cameron. Welcome back to the show either. So that's that's pretty amazing gig that you've got there. How did you get into a crossword puzzles Well my mom solve them for most of my childhood and then like everyone else who who starts out getting published. I was just freelancing. I was submitting ends admitting to the new york times and getting rejected rejected. And then after a couple of years of that I got my first puzzling. Till what makes you like crosswords. Like why was that. The medium that you thought you know was the one to sort of lean into Honestly i'm you know it's funny you ask because i'm much more of a constructor than a solver I do solve the daily puzzle in the times but for me. It's like the same as a referring furniture or any kind of kind of craft a hobby. You know it's it's making something it's thinking but you also have a flow state. Where for me. It's just you know step back and a few hours later. I have a grid. I can't really explain it. It's just sort of a relaxing thing for me. It's a flow. I personally am terrified of doing some of these crosswords But you are several one of several black crossword constructors who was recently featured in the new york times As part of its celebration of black constructors when we think about race in crosswords and in particular the Constructor tell us how or not how not diverse the community is. Well i think part of the reason we had You know a black shutters. Be class week this year and last year we had the same for women's history month we had a women's constructors week is because the diversity issue is a bit lacking for black instructors week only had out of the seven days we only had six constructors because the two of us who who might have been available to do a sunday puzzle. Had to be slotted for other days Just to give you an example. We did have a seventh black instructor. Run this week But it just gives you a sense of. It was a very very small pool and the new york times puzzle runs every day of the year. So you know it could afford to be more diverse. I mean at the at the new yorker for example Two of the two of the six conductors featured in the new york times last week are on the staff at the new yorker And the new yorker staff has has many many many fewer people available to the new york. Times says so it. You know it's it's not the most diverse crowd and that's something that we're working on that something that people are going out of their way to for example mentor younger constructors of color women. I'm getting more women. Doing friday and saturday puzzles. Which is when seamless puzzles ryan. Which stoically been very very very male You know thinking about these things because there's just really no reason why this is no science behind the idea that that making crosswords appeals to some more than others. It really is a matter of who feels like this is something they can do. Who feels like. It's something that's invited to do. Well let's talk about the the clues themselves and for some reason. I thought i think often about things like standardized tests where they're those have been criticized often for for not necessarily difficulty but for presenting Word problems and other things that are really disconnected to the students that might be taking those tests particularly if they haven't had certain life experiences And the rest. And i wonder if crosswords are the same. Are the clues that we see often reflective of the lack of diversity in the constructing crossword constructing world. And if so how do we see that potentially changing. Well they absolutely can be. And i give you an example of that. You could have a name. For example. Carl in the puzzle or a another good one is d. d. e. through letters for me my instinctive way that would be in terms of ruby dee or billy dee williams and for another conductor who doesn't have that in mind it could be any number of other things which is fine but when you do that with everything in the puzzle that does have that leeway you opt for a white reference or an older reference Including john any number of ways but he's been clues lennon to anyways too many times rather And it does make a bit of a difference and also just you know if you beyond saying the puzzle or if you put I dunno read a marino puzzle or or or whatever. These are choices that these are their names that take up a bit of space and you're probably more inclined to include these people if you care about them So so who are but really also what you care about. And what you're sensitive to all of that plays a role and the idea for me as for all of us. No matter who you are two to represent a diversity of things in our grids because they're solved by diversity of people but we are all thinking in those terms. There are people listening. Now who are probably saying cameron. What's the secret to solving crossword puzzles and Since you construct them to you have any advice. Yeah i always start with two things. I look for all the fill in the blanks because those are usually pretty okay. I might look for all the proper nouns that i might know Because there's nowhere to don't so if you know who wrote this song or whatever's being include start with that stuff and the word play will come later. Have you ever gotten pushed back for any of your clues. People said we didn't know who this person was. I've gotten a lot of that. I've got a lot of pushback for nuttiness. Cuddle buddy and the new york times once and some incident made them very uncomfortable. Which i feel for them. It's quite sad to me. Yeah i've gotten all kinds of pushback. Hi i'm sure. I'm sure you have k. Austin collins is a film.

So, Hey, I was very, very fortunate to develop a relationship with Audie Dica already saying scales, wife and still friends to this day, and he went into the basement of their home and Wacker Russo, Indiana. You can believe that. It's like the NFL Hall of Fame and already said the only two people during the last five years when, when the comet struggled. That's still in touch with her every week calling What do you need? What can I do for you? Well, coach Ditka on Michael Jordan, while all those two Chicago legends obviously and dick in Jordan and Gil say was to thank you, Jimmy Gill, of course, died a couple of months ago, but he was a great running back. For the Chicago Bears. And and, of course, the movie Brian's song, which still makes me cry every time I watch. It really depicts the change in the NFL. You know, we've talked to Roy White. You talk about Hank Aaron. These guys couldn't stay with white players couldn't stay in the hotels and the first black and white guy in a room together in NFL history. Were the whole of theme running back Gale saviors. And Brian Piccolo, who was a great running back at Wake Forest, then went on to play with Gail in Chicago, and they room together. They had a great love story that what he did, and of course in the movie Jim Jim con Jimmy Caan. He plays Brian Piccolo when he dies of cancer, and Billy Dee Williams, who plays Gale Sayers. He's up there when? When James Caan's character is the real person, Brian Piccolo basically the end of his life, and he's receiving an award and he starts to cry and he goes. I want you all to hit your knees tonight. And pray. For Brian Piccolo, as I'm saying, this about getting very much and it is. It's an unbelievable movie about a true story. You know, he was annoyed like hell. He did not want to do that. But he put on a good face, I guess. That wench was there as well. And Pat Lynch, always fiery and always right on the money. I love what he said. Listen to him. Stop acting like we're trying to reinvent the wheel. Leasing is simple, good guys and their diet. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Review
"Star Wars the rise of sky Walker opens in theaters tomorrow the third and final film in the latest Star Wars trilogy the end of the road in so many ways for Star Wars especially for this storyline involving Luke Skywalker which all started with the first Star Wars movie back in nineteen seventy seven which I guess in terms of the Star Wars story is actually the fourth chapter and if you find that a little bit confusing you probably still have absorb some of the famous lines from the movies like use the force or do or do not there is no try or Luke I am your father which I know I know the line is actually no I am your father you can tell I'm sort of like walking a tight rope today because I feel like I have two of the greatest Star Wars fans in front of me right now but outside of that JJ Abrams is the director of the rise of sky Walker and just imagine that kind of pressure he's got the tough job of bringing it all in for a landing as I mentioned chasing Garber and Kathleen Newman remaining they went to a special preview screening of Star Wars yesterday before virtually anybody else they're here live in the studio dying to tell you all about it hello my friends Hey how's it going I feel like I said I don't have any good Star Wars greetings is there a good star was greeting hi yeah Jason is wearing a full tee shirts and has the charger beings Baba bobble head well the characters where's your yak give anything Kathleen you know and it's all in my heart something deep down yeah the forces in me so let's talk about this you get a chance to go to the press screening for the new Star Wars yesterday you guys go to these things all the time dozens even a week Jason where even the jaded film critics of Toronto a little bit excited to see Star Wars I mean look everybody's little **** it only comes of this but I think this is actually pretty good to go into this film with a certain level of trepidation I think that if we go in sort of too excited him to sort of objectivity we should be open to its terms I think that a lot of the film critics don't Nestle do that all the time but I think that most people when I'm with the appropriate level of a mix of objectivity in slate excitement of their there for an event Kevin were you excited I was very excited I got there a little bit later than Jason and I felt a little bit of the excitement but once the movie started it was dead silent like this is not a spoiler but when Landau courtesy and gets on screen for the first time Billy Dee Williams I lost my mind and everyone else is like silent which is what it's about which is a huge advantage I mean that like obviously leasing again with public and this is very much I mean it's like man to man the phones at Taft if you see them press for him to kind of a miserable experience you just have to get used to that but a film like this if you're ever going to see this movie theater on the big screen the because you can with an audience to get in the indictment so let's do it I can tell you I can hear you yelling your radio right now Jason I'll start with you Star Wars the rise of sky Walker how was fine suddenly I called the crime you went on Twitter for those over and it look let's let's be one hundred percent clear this is kind of the second and a half ending we've had we had returned the jet I which ended everything and we had episode three which was supposed to end everything Lucas's and then kind of the last job I had a great ending it's like the work done that of those you should go see it I'm not going to worry about it was the last movie that the the universe was going to be bigger and that we weren't going to be focused on the small story and then within us there was the whole notion that the myth of Scott Walker would continue as you see the kids playing with action figure and the kid who picks up the broom with a force you realize that this is not something that's patcher or matrilineal that is going to be bigger than this one little family we did have a question that comes by way remember these characters you really left we're gonna bring those back and focus entirely on that I'll make the story in some ways smaller so it's galactic in scope and yet smaller narrative scope and that is it's doing what it's supposed to do he was hired to do a job which the cap off this saga and it does it and it's fine but that makes it a little bit less interesting a commitment let's get into that in a second Jason says fine Kathleen I mean I think shockingly Jason I kind of agree here I'm I liked it I was very entertained I had a good time even with the jaded critics who were not like matching my energy level I agree that it's not great there is a fine as to what I do think that there's there's a little bit of like a course correction and that they seem to be doing with the last chat I so yeah he JJ made the world a little smaller and really abandon some of the really interesting stuff that Ryan Johnson had set up in the last chat I which is frustrating and makes it not a great movie I think he was trying to please everybody and trying to please those fans that were so upset at the last I and in doing that the narrative suffered and it's also just trying to be a lot try to be a lot of things to a lot of people and then I think it is in any of those things to anybody for example are two foot to a deep in the weeds and lord knows I cut but the way the blade of grass scene six so when I saw the fact that was not mentioned I'm a little upset and the deal is that let people think that this was structured that they knew exactly we're gonna beat I mean they always talk about Lucas having these twelve movie idea sort of written out for some of these are complete stripped away from looks as vision bat that goes without saying but what happened was JJ wrote the the force awakens as an empty are there was no ending there's going to jail just fantastic to look at openings right everybody knows that what has what he's really good at is setting the stage not traded endings hi everyone also knows self admittedly I mean he got in all those interviews actually talks about how this was going to be real tons of room because then he never was supposed to direct the film right other directions where involved actually like a so the deal is that when he wrote the first film they didn't know where it was going to go and it was one of those hand off it's like I'm going to set up the stage hand it off to you and you're going to finish this the second verse of the song that's what Ryan Johnson does run Johnson took all these ingredients and did something for many of us super interesting in super a complex and did essentially ministry talked about what is it to be found the end of of the force awakens is ray handing a lightsaber Luke Skywalker legally saying let's go and the opening shot of last chat I is illuminated at one yeah the last film the film after that episode eight is Luke Skywalker take fully superimposed over shoulder in other words I've been handing off the story to you and Ryan's first thing he does like let's not worry about this story that's not the interesting thing the interesting thing is getting into the nature the metaphysics of the deeper stuff but the force this film goes okay I can't remember the last thing you said okay we're not going to worry as much about this stuff remember these characters you're like let's get him together with all gonna be the same ship they're all gonna gonna ventures together but I want to point out the Kathy when you say that JJ Abrams who has had the incredibly unenviable task of trying to finish Star Wars trying to and Star Wars I I want to really highlight there that is an unenviable task it's even if you're not great even if you're amazing endings try ending the greatest film franchise in history so how does it do Kathleen as an ending to the Star Wars story that we now I mean I thought it was satisfying it's an it's an ending and it answers a lot of questions and as we know Los fans I feel you like we know that change is not answering questions and doing and ray yam asset is flying in and I think that this is just whether you like this ending and the answers that they give you but they give you answers and they give you a very definitive ending and you know some people already have set hi stag JJ Abrams is over party was trending on Twitter yeah it's I mean no one's gonna be happy about anything but I think that he did a good enough job I was entertained and it is it like a nice wrapped up and is it is no one going to be happy with this look at there's always gonna be people upset about this because we care right through well for lots and lots of reasons to ours is pretty fundamental to popular culture and the people have a vested interest and they have in a typical fan communities not everybody but a very vocal minority believes they have ownership over these characters and when they want things to go at a certain way this feeling as for this film actually goes towards a certain direction of giving them what they want and then they end up not wanting what they will think that they wanted that's one thing but I will say that these two fundamental things about changing his his course one lens flares you dialed the heck down with one foot above is one thing I'm like okay I I love that you love letters was god bless you but there's a big thing is he's a red herring you talk about lost as he's a guy who like put a shark and have a logo on a shark and they only got this has to mean something smoke monster has to mean something that's just his step he's trying to trick you a little bit and this film would be much more interesting of those red herrings were not red herrings but actually things that happened so what happens is he consistently in this film gives you something and it's one of those moments the other two phones have moms like oh my god you can do that all my god you can shoot a laser blast haven't hang in the air that's kind of cool all my god you can take a ship and light speed through another ship I never thought you could do that and this film every moment but there was like oh my god that's don't know let's start back that isn't what you think it was ha ha ha I'd something I went I was gonna say second I was going to say that I thought that was but it was it was actually the opposite of this but it makes me really excited to watch it to figure out what the red hearings are and and or not yeah that's not as well as a good teams but I will say that some of those those on inspiring moments that you felt like we're missing I felt them I felt like I was a kid again watching some of this these action sequences and some of that the lights ever seen her so beautiful and big and yeah will transfer to transport you back to your child because I was going to ask if we what we talked a little bit I should stress to set this up by the way I'm I'm speaking which is a corporate Cathy Newman remaining ever talk about the new Star Wars movie rise of Scott Walker what to do right I think the cast is so strong and I think that Jason alluded to it but putting them together like you've got Oscar Isaac daisy Ridley and John by a guy as fan PO and ray and they're together for most of the film and that is a

"This news back in january a listener was at a thing with woody harrelson woody harrelson say this was happening so just letting you know there's no exclusive we have this news awhile ago it's coming back zombie land to everyone's returning emma stone woody harrelson jesse eisenberg abbott abigail breslin a lot of oscars in that category oscar nomination i think all four of them have oscar nominations does what do you have an oscar nam i think he for people for people versus larry flint i think i was three billboards yeah yelling for three billboards to and abigail breslin has one as well but she was much younger jesse eisenberg has social network emma stone one and oscar so ethically never thought about that it's a starstudded cast their zombie lend to and this comes on the heels of we talked to rawson thurber talked about not forcing sequels like telling the whole story like he told his much about dodge balls he possibly could i think this doesn't fall on that i think zombie land there were so many more samis at the end of the movie so i think there's potential for you know to expand their story but you know it's a matter of how good the script is in its witty like the other one i mean zombie was such surprise when it came out it was so enjoyable the visuals were like when they put the rules up on the screen it was a fun movie so i just as fun because again cast is great this is probably the only zambia related content this and the last of us too even though they're not technically these that i'm looking forward to because i feel like the zone be trend is at its dime breasts slowly being carried out by what's tv show the walking dead that people somehow still watch yet hate it the biggest fans hate the walking dead i feel like i it seems like every cyclical every couple years you have a monster that's very popular two thousand eight vampires came onto the scene with twilight vampires suck parody movie all these other vampire related properties go back to nineteen ninetytwo yet interview at the vampire null those anne rice novels around round vampires see had vampires are hot for few years and then it shifted into zombies so the question is wins wins frankenstein's monster get his moment he did not like these he got the aaron eckert one which is i frankenstein hey maybe the dark universe comes back maybe he does get his moment yeah yeah that's a little bit different than general types like vampires zombies vampires you can't have one frankenstein he's like a patchwork monster fracas actually is technically zombie so i just kind of do mean flurry consigns monster frankenstein's monster so i think i just kind of owned myself there that's a that's a cellphone rule if if a conversation involving frankenstein the name bring sign takes place in nobody corrects the person his frankenstein's monster the conversation is invalid shitty person correct the other person yeah i took on that role but yes we're definitely happy about zombie zombie to right so that makes me let the last samba land zombie land one and folks they're making a zombie land origin story starring billy dee williams you wanna know what it's called what zombie landau.
