"Close to closing it. And then I get a call at 6 p.m. yesterday. Saying they have a land deal. So I'll allow for you to decide who's at fault. Now she was not mincing words when she talked about the a's not playing fair, although she's willing to listen if the a's came back to the table, but for now it looks like they have a deal to build in Vegas. Now, if you look at the Nevada media, it's not a done deal. It's not all honky Dory. The a still want $500 million in taxpayer dollars to pay for infrastructure improvements, but despite this being an ongoing threat in Oakland that the a's would leave. Oakland is not unique. It just feels like it. And that's why this new book by Andy dowlish and Dave newhouse, the goodbye Oakland, winning wanderlust, and the sports towns fight for survival is so heartbreaking for me as an ace fan and as a taxpayer and someone who just simply loves baseball. You've been down this road before. Yeah, yeah. And this doesn't necessarily mean all hope is lost because everybody sort of feels that way. And they're talking that way. But if I hear Andy correctly, it may not be that way. Yeah. Well, I mean, it's especially striking and your book Andy gives a good sense of this. Because this is a town where people are incredibly passionate about their sports. They're loyal in a way that you just don't see really anywhere else. Maybe you could start us off by talking a little bit about what makes Oakland unique as a sports town. When I first moved here at the end of 1980 when I was hired by the Haas family and incidentally just a number, the Haas family bought the Oakland a's from Charlie Finley, who was taking the team out of town. They were going. They were gone to Denver. I don't think they went. So this comes back in a discussion. And I was amazed. I had never been out here. Like, where did you get this Lake merit? How did you build montclair and Piedmont? What about this Jack London square thing and the water? How beautiful it is that people with real money live in Oakland so they can look at San Francisco. And the theaters, all of the incredible positive nature, Oakland is a gutty, Gritty town. And I say that in the most positive sense, but over time it's had a high level of low self esteem in my view for no good reason. I was absolutely enthusiastic to come here. And the a's had reached a nadir at that time. No season tickets, Holly was only 12 years old at that time, I think. No season tickets, no sponsorships, no radio, no nothing. And in a year later, we created Billy ball and had massive crowds at the coliseum. So what can be done what has been done can be done? You worked with the, well, the Haas family hired you. Correct. And I'm curious as to what makes good ownership. It's really simple, ladies and gentlemen, teamwork, leadership and trust. If you take those three elements and it doesn't have to just be sports, it could be any area of business. And if you analyze Oakland over the last few years, they don't have all three, not even close. And that needs to be team ownership, the league, the business community, the fans, the media community, what you need is a commitment and the hostages had it. We are private owners. These teams are all owned privately, but we believe you, the fans, own it with your hearts, minds, and souls. And that's what Walter Haas Wally has and Roy eisenhardt basically infused in all of us, and it made literally an overnight difference. What I've always looked at is sports teams, especially the coliseum, they represent the town square of the community, where people of every part can get together and not care who they are and love their team. They might have a difference of opinion if another team is sitting next to them. But that town square aspect is what quality owners understand and what those that are just looking to increase their net asset appreciation. They don't get it. All right, well, a lot more to dig into in this conversation. Real quick for anybody just joining us. This is kcbs and depth. I'm Keith manconi, joined by KCB S anchor Holly Kwan. Today with the a's apparently headed for the door out of Oakland. We're trying to make sense of it all with Bay Area sports insider Andy dolis, who just co wrote a new book called goodbye Oakland, winning wanderlust and a sports town's fight for survival. And it has been a long fight spanning the decades really, this is just the latest chapter. Whether we're talking about the Raiders, there was a going and a coming and a going in and coming or whether we're talking about the warriors, this is a story that has had many chapters to it, and part of why you say that Oakland and other people have said that Oakland is one of the most disrespected sports town towns in the country. To help us understand what's happening now, you're somebody with such a deep insight as somebody who's worked in the front office at so many sports organizations around the Bay Area. To help us understand what's happening now. Maybe you could shed some insight on the history that we're coming from. Where would you point us in terms of the history of Bay Area sports to understand the course that Oakland has been treading? Well, first of all, a lot of people don't understand the Bay Area. They live in their little communities, you know, where is Marin county, right? When people first come here or the new weather person goes and the temperature in San Rafael is 82°, where is the Silicon Valley? It's a big place. This has so much strength

"So nice step ups and earnings and cash despite healthcare being off on its own now. You're going in the right direction, clearly going up as far as I can tell, free cash flow as well as profitability. At the same time, the street had a little hesitancy because the forward guidance on the earnings per share was a little less than they had hoped for. What's constraining you right now in the earnings per share? Would you say, what's the biggest constraint for GE? Well, I think we exited 2022, David, with tremendous momentum. The fourth quarter print for the end of 22 had us, I think, at an exceptionally strong revenue level up 11%. As you well know, led by our aerospace business, earnings were up 51% cash up 16%. So it's really that momentum that we bring in to 2023, given what's happening with healthcare, given the balance sheet improvements. We're now down over a $100 billion of debt since 2018, I'm sure models are adjusting, but we come into this year feeling very good about where we are from an aerospace perspective. We expect the top line to be up mid teens to high teens with services and new units, continuing to improve given the aerospace recovery. We also anticipate better performance in our business. We know we've got challenges in renewables, but we think we're going to have a better year in 23, and that just sets us up overall. I think not only for good results this year, but in turn, the second step of the transformation whereby we take GE brno public is we did healthcare earlier this month. "Aaron judge. Judge was walked four times and remains at 60 ohm runs one shine. Roger marriage is 61 AL record. I just reviewed this. I mean, I'm in a camp a walk as a single. So the guy was four for 5 last night, a number of the walks were in three two pitches. He's not like reaching out over the plate trying to get a cheap home run. He's being an adult. He does this. Yeah. But if you look at it at the record, they're putting it down is like zero for one or something, but the official app. But they're pitching to them. Most of these clubs are pitching to them, but that if it get behind, they're not going to give them something to hit. You don't want to be the pitcher to be that guy. You don't want to be the trivia question when it comes up in tribute. I'm sorry, maybe they're on this. Doug Cass is down there dying in Florida Who's behind him betting? I mean, does he have strength behind embedding? Oh, well, yeah. He's the most, he is the most. He's leading off. First of all, to get maximizes the number of fats. And then I think it's been tourism or something. I'm not sure who's batting, but they have good hitters behind them. So people kind of kind of have to pitch them. Yeah, unless you're really in a we agree a walk is a single. Yeah, I agree. I'm in that camp. I've never understood that's Billy ball. You know, the Billy bean, you know? Just get on base. "Three that ended up being like a turnover for a touchdown for a wide open on the other end. And then we talked about the Billy ball, but Trevor feels like ran over a few times. And it just shows how far away he is because as much as we say that Trevor keels can't play that way. It's sort of the same for tie tie. Like you gotta be able to body up for a guy that's gonna be a stronger guard. If you're not a lot of stuff circulating on Twitter last week that ties the point guard, I don't know why people say it's a combo. I still see a combo. I don't think he's your main point guard. So if you're a combo in your garden twos and stronger guys like that in the NBA, you're gonna have to hold your brand. And that'll come with time. I just overall just a little bit underwhelming. I like them a lot at Arizona compass prep. I saw him play a lot. I didn't necessarily think right off the rip is a one and done lottery thing. I'm not running an office. This is one game one performance, freshman after we saw that in the first game we'll talk about in a minute, but just if he doesn't have that burst and jumpers out there, how else can you impact the game if you shoot two for 14 in the shot's not fallen? Yeah, you know that's kind of why like the name Chauncey billups has always stuck with me when scouts have had conversations with me about him. Right. Like they've brought up the idea of him being like more of a combo in the vein of chauncy Phillips where you probably want a second point guard out there with them, but yo, he can handle some of the load. Which is essentially what we're saying when you say combo guard. He does see the floor really well. He processes the game really, really well as a passer. I just wonder if the role is being rolled a little bit different than what his idealized role is here if he's going to be asked to do that. And you bring up the idea of who is who can take some of the load off of his hands I am surprised that Kentucky utilized Kellen Grady solely as a floor spacer in this game. Because you go back and you watch his tape at Davidson. Oh totally. Prep school. He definitely has more stuff off the bounce. And I was thinking the same exact thing. I don't want to say he's been relegated to it, but he was this floor spacer and he hit some big shots to kind of space things out and create those driving lanes for severe whaler. But he can do more and toward the end of the game and the run out of time. He played a little bit of catch up, but I think he missed like one runner, but he wasn't really called upon to self create and make really scoring options and opportunities for other players other than hey, catch and shoot stand over here and then just move and spread the floor out a little bit. Yeah. Let's go to some of the other guys here. Mark Williams had 5 points and 7 rebounds, but he was just a monster defensively..

"Word. And it has to do with acceptance or the percentage of people that will actually do it. They mess in that report like long COVID. What kids even get COVID, let alone get long COVID, which is something of a myth. I just found the whole thing. One more report about the kids and this is another one called the 5 year old vaccine update. And this is on PBS. Let me see 5 year old. Oh, got it. Number 5. The Food and Drug Administration formally recommended Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for young children. The CDC makes the final decision next week on the lower dose shots for 5 to 11 year olds. Meanwhile, thousands of New York City's police officers firefighters and others refused to comply with today's deadline to get vaccinated. They'll be put on unpaid leave starting Monday. In Illinois, a federal judge refused to block vaccine mandates issued by state and local authorities, some workers there had sought a restraining order. I have some stuff on that as well, but I just like to go back to the new words that you were talking about. I'll take being a new word and long COVID. Check this. And Miriam Webster dictionary is out with this year's crop of 455 newly added words. They range from TBH and abbreviation for to be honest to super spreader to fluffer nutter. The sandwich of peanut butter and marshmallow cream. And for fathers who eat too many fluffer nutters, there's dad bod. All right, let's look at some of the new words. And there it is. And I had that exact same clip that you just played. Oh, really? And it's like we're going to go look at the new words. I will say they picked, they just picked up the top three. When you look at the press release, this is the first three words on there. That's all they had to do. Yeah. Yeah, this is how lazy the media has become. Because they're so funny words in here. Well, let's look at the coronavirus words first. There it is long COVID. Right off the bat, new word, we played it, and right away it's in the dictionary. Definition, a condition that is marked by the presence of symptoms such as fatigue cough shortness of breath headache or brain fog, which persists for an extended period of time such as weeks or months following a person's initial recovery from COVID-19 infection. So it's a thing whether you believe it or not. Vaccine passport. Now the question I have vaccine passports in there, which is your fave. No, it's not, but is the how is vaccine passport a new word? Thank you. Is that a phrase? Why would it be worse? Webster website itself, they're saying these are new words. A physical or digital document providing proof of vaccination against one or more infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. But then there's also super spreader. I think this is a new word. Yes, because it's a word. It's actually a word. They do hyphenate. It's an event or location at which a significant number of people contract the same communicable disease often used before. So how about hysteria? Often used before another noun such as in super spreader event. The term superspreader originally referred to a slightly or to a highly contagious person capable of, oh, this is a change. This is interesting. The term super spreader originally referred to a highly contagious person capable of passing on a disease to many other. Many others and now can also refer to a single place or location where many others are infected. So they have an old usage. And then typhoid married be the oldest. And then again, two words break through medical out breakthrough. No, just break through. Category medical. Infection occurring in someone who is fully vaccinated against an infectious agent often used before another noun such as breakthrough cases or breakthrough infection. I'm going to go out a couple. Do you have the list of COVID? I have to ask in front of me. From words from online culture and communication besides TBH WTF, maybe that's already been accepted. But this one gets me is because yes, did you see this? Yes, I did. It's very interesting because, instead of using the word in a traditional sense, which is, you know, as a connector or because of this or that, you should say, because now how can we use it differently these days? Well, because oh, God. I just did. That's it. I'd like am I right as a new word? Am I right all one word a.m.? Who do you remind me now? There's a couple in here. That's a social media thing. Yeah, I think I've heard it. Digital nomad, by the way, it would be peculiar. Deep platform. Not finally, that word never has a dictionary entry, and now hopefully it will. And the definition to remove and ban a registered user from a mass communication medium such as a social network or blogging website broadly to prevent from having or providing a platform to communicate. That sounds pretty evil that way, doesn't it? Yeah, I agree. Now here's one that got me which is copied pasta. Oh, brother, I didn't see this one. I don't know what this means. Copy pasta is a data processing term supposedly. It's been copied and spread widely online. It means something has been copied and spread widely online, copypasta can be a highlighted meme, or it can have more serious intent with the political or cultural message. I have never heard this word. How is it now a new word? Have you ever heard it? No. Is anyone in the troll room? Have you guys heard this bull crap word? I think they make these up and put them in. Just to see if we were paying attention. Let's see all the time. Okay, boomer. Oh. What's she going to get daddy? There you go. No, it seems like a lot of people have heard of it. I've never heard copy pasta. You're just out of touch. Oh, thanks, hold on. Let's kick that person out. Who was that? Kick him out. Mystic. I'm kicking you out. There's a couple more on where they have AstroTurf, which I thought was an old term that's long since been defined, but okay, we'll skip that. What about ism? Yeah, that's another fan favorite. Vote a Rama. Vote a Rama. How about small ball? Which I thought was something affliction you get. Small, the other thing is what small ball on here? Yeah, small ball. Yeah, there is small ball. Small ball, which is an old, old, old term. I'm surprised it's not hasn't been on here before. They're going to use these terms. Small ball goes back to Billy ball in the 70s, I think, are the 80s when Billy Martin was the manager of the a's, and he was a master of playing small ball, and it's a type of approach to baseball where you just nickel and dime people to death with a bunting and squeeze bunts and steals left and right. It's not new. It's not entirely it's not even used anymore much. Does nobody play that kind of baseball anywhere they go with the definition? And offensive strategy that involves at bats that advance one or more base runners into scoring position. In basketball, a game strategy used on speed and agility of players as opposed to height and physicality. More in general, a strategy for progressing towards a goal by proceeding in small steps or by addressing small.

"And it has to do with acceptance or you know the percentage of people that will actually do it domestic stuff in that report like long co vid kids even get cova let alone get long cove it. Which is something of a myth. He's found one more report about the kids and the This is another one called a five year old vaccine. Update is on pbs. She five old got number five. The food and drug administration formally recommended pfizer's covert nineteen vaccine for young children. The cdc makes the final decision next week on the lower dose shots for five to eleven year olds. Meanwhile thousands of new york city's police officers firefighters and others refuse to comply with today's deadline to get vaccinated. They'll be put on unpaid leave starting monday. In illinois a federal judge refused to block vaccine mandates issued by state and local authorities. Some workers there had sought a restraining order. I have some stuff on that as well. But i just like to go back to the new words that you were talking about you know so i'll take being a new word at long Check this and miriam webster. Dictionary is out with this year's crop of four hundred fifty five newly added words they range from tv h. An abbreviation for to be honest to super spreader to fluffer nutter. The sandwich of peanut butter and marshmallow cream and for fathers. Who eat too many fluffer nutters. There's dad all right. Let's look at some of the new words and there it is. I had that exact same clip that you just played a really and it's like we're going to go look at the new words. Yeah i. I will say they picked just picked the top three when you look at the press release is the first three words on there. That's all they had to do. This is how lazy is funny words in here. Well let's look at the corona virus words. I there it is long. Covert right off the bat new word. We played it and right away. It's in the dictionary. A definition of condition that is marked by the presence of symptoms such as fatigue cough shortness of breath headache or brain fog which persists for an extended period of time such as weeks or months following a person's initial recovery from cova nineteen infection. It's a thing where the where the we believe it or not Vaccine passport now. The question the guys the vaccine passports ner which is your favorite No it's not but is the house vaccine passport in new work. Thank you afraid. Why would any words in the merriam webster website itself. They're saying these are new word physical or digital document providing proof of vaccination against one or more infectious diseases such as cove in nineteen. But then there's also super spreader. Now i think this is a new word. Yes because it's a word is actually a word. They do hyphenate. It's an event or location. At which a significant number of people contract the same communicable disease often used before so like about hysteria often use before another noun such as in super spreader event the term super spreader originally referred to a slightly to a highly contagious person. Capable of oh this is a change. This is interesting. The term super spreader originally referred to a highly contagious person capable of passing on a disease too many other on many others and now can also refer to a single place or location where many others are infected. So they have an old usage and then typhoid mary. The and then again. Two words breakthrough medical outbreaks breakthrough medical nudges breakthrough category medical infection occurring someone who is fully vaccinated against an infectious agent. Often used before another noun such as breakthrough cases or breakthrough infection is going to go on a couple Near the list cove it have in front of me from words from online culture and communication at that would be besides. Tb h. w. t. f. Maybe that's already been accepted but this one gets me is because yes you see. Yes i did. It's very interesting because instead of using that word in a traditional sense. Which is you know as connector word that because of this or that you just say because but now now how can we use it differently these days. Well because oh god i just did. That's it i'd like. Am i right as a new word. Am i right all one word. Am ira it Who use that reminds me. There's a couple of social media thing. Yeah i think i've heard it Digital no mad by the way found would be fewer. Yeah d platform. it's a not hyphen. Finally that word never has a dictionary entry and now hopefully it will end the definition to remove and ban a registered user from a mass communication medium such as a social network or blogging website. Broadly to prevent from having or providing a platform to communicate does sounds pretty evil. That way doesn't it now. Here's one that got me which is copied pasta brother. I didn't see this one. I don't know what this means. Copy pastas and is a data is a big data processing. Supposedly it's been copied and spread widely online is. Something's been copy and and spread widely online copy. Pasta can be a highlighted meam or it can have more serious intent with a political or cultural message. I have never heard this word. How is it now a new word. Have you ever heard it no. "Rick till eight two hundred chicken wings at your mama's house last night now back to fat boy. Look back to sports byline. Usa coast to coast and around the world on the american forces radio network. It's great to welcome back to the show. Richard grisham is a video game developer. And he's here to talk about the brand new this week out of the park baseball twenty two just in time for opening day richard. Welcome back to the show as with any game that is You know every each and every year an annual game. You look for new quirks and additions improvements. So what are we going to see different this time. Well the number one thing and thank you for having me on. I appreciate it. The number one thing is every single team. Every major league baseball team has a brand new beautiful. Three d stadium so We have rebuilt all of the stadiums from the ground up. And we're really excited about it. It's a huge upgrade from the past. So that that's that's the first thing that people will certainly notice You longtime fans also be really excited about a whole new set of poaching. Updates that we've done that. Give your coaching staff. The lot more ability influence at successive individual players and the team As well as a brand new addition to build your own ballpark in case you wanna take a brand new stadium and Say you know what this is fine. But i want to knock down way park into my own version or wanna take out You know took that stadium and put my own vision in place if you do that too. So that's that's just a few things that are brand new pretty. Yeah for the rainy season. The other thing too is that you can take the helm of any major league team in history so we can do murderers row or the gas house gang. Or i can do billy ball ricky henderson oakland as you got it every single team and player in the history of baseball game so you can start right now. The twenty twenty one season and take a take the as or any the giants and turn them into whatever you want them to be. You know you manage a tire. Franchise from top to bottom trades agents You know this is not a stick skills. Game misses all about your brain and how you put together an organization and managed scout and draft and trade But yet you can also go back in time. The entire history based off from the late eighteen hundreds all here all the real teams real players real major league. Minor league teams So you can go back in time and and rewrite history or reliving however you want to and and you can even say i want to have things happen as they did or you can go to certain point in time to say not randomized us and unless it's have some fun and see what happens there. There's really you know i. It sounds like hyperbole. but there's almost no limit to the amount of different ways to play the part baseball and experienced reality of what happened or you know sort of have your own little different play on unreal baseball. Other thing too. Is you mentioned having the license from the league and the union ads legitimacy to this because there are some games that are fun but if it's you know farcical fendt fantastic names. It's just it's just not as real than plank with the real teams couldn't agree more of a few years ago we acquire the mlb license. Am ldp a license. And it's not just about stamping. You know the logo on there and and making the lows real you know. It's about getting real stadiums and getting a real artwork and getting real players and getting a real photos of getting the real data You know it. Just it elevates your game so much when you are officially partners and i use the word partner for reading because basically baseball and the major league baseball players association have both really stepped up and and and work with us especially the last couple of years even more closely as we have sort of been recognized as being this this kinda unique little. You know this unique little part of the major league baseball ecosystem right like it'll be. Has its big vigilant game. Like it's big. You know sort of Temple video games. Everybody knows the show for example but our game you know now. We go on him of network every year. We do our official world series predictions on. We got those right three to four times that we've done i'm You know we've done power these dream brackets. Where do these simulations of historical things. So it's really been amazing to work with major league baseball players association real time especially the last couple of years and it's really helped our game a lot to the point where gabe kappler uses our game During spring training and during down time to get him and his coaching staff reps like they've been public about it and give tap lots our podcast couple of weeks ago to talk about it so it's been a really remarkable evolution of our game and taken us definitely to a level that frankly i didn't i couldn't i couldn't even vision it better than than where he hung out from where we work years ago. It's pretty amazing. We're speaking with richard grisham out of the park baseball twenty two out this week. I think a lot of people need to understand too. Is that to play this game. You don't have to be good at video games. And i think that's what intimidate some people it's like. I'd like to be involved love baseball. But i've never was any good at it. You don't have to be good right now. In fact it's kind of a game meant for people like me. Like i'm i'm not the kind of person who is a competitive video game player like i don't press the buttons fast enough. I don't move the sticks. Well enough you know. I still like to play. You know you're madden's your nba. Case and stuff. But i i'm not i you know i can't compete. You don't have to be that kind of player to just about. Do you love baseball. And if you do or you know you love running an organization and if you do just have all these decisions that you make and like real baseball is very often. Not a writer arrive ascension. It's just about what kind of team do you wanna do. You wanna be a team. That's based around pitching defense. You wanna make sure you load up your bullpen with the most arms. What does that mean. You might have to sacrifice power you might have sexual contact with the sacrifice something right you know do you. Do you want to spend a lot of money on international and then over the course of a few years really build up your international pipeline or he wanted to focus on college players. You wanna use a little graft sorta fill in some gaps. Do you want to spend money to you. Wanna be like you know the new money in new york city. You know behind the match. Just start spending like crazy like there's all sorts of different options that you can you can do. Of course the fans are going to be there the whole time letting you know how successful you are owner is going to give you some leeway because you can't just you what you want to because you hadn't you're working for the owner so ultimately he's going to give you some goals and if you don't you don't take care of those right you might. You might be in a little trouble but of course if you want to. If you don't wanna have that pressure you can always turn off the The on the commissioner mode and you can sort of set it up to do whatever you want to just for fun in your own sandbox. So you can even customize experience where you are under the same sort of pressure as a real life general manager or you can just have fun and do what everyone to and that's really cool and as we know with baseball numbers mean more than any other sport like if you ask the what's kareem scoring record. I don't know how many touchdown passes peyton manning throw a lot but how many home runs how willie as hit six sixty. I mean baseball numbers. We hold them much more sacred and you can go into a deep dive into the numbers and.

"That's how it went down. But she refused to do it with Baldwin. They ended up hating each other on set. That's why the film tanked. Evans was trying to save it. They didn't have the right chemistry. So I remember watching that film and telling Evans Billy Pullman sucks. How is he even an actor? He was horrible in that film. And Evans knew it. He admitted it. He said, look, you know, he was the up and comer. He was going to be the heir apparent to Alec Baldwin, two Baldwin brothers. There was going to be huge. All the studios wanted him. Sometimes that happens. Remember Chris O'Donnell? God, that that was going to be a big star. They put them in every goddamn movie. And nothing worked. Now he's found a slot in the goddamn. One of those TV fucking crime shows and there's no stopping him, but he found this niche. I think he's the most boring bland guy in the world. No different than Billy Baldwin, but sometimes actors and actresses are pushed by studio people that they need this person in the film and not it doesn't work all the time. I mean, there were clamoring to get Madonna on screen. We know that our film career, but Baldwin was just up and comer. And the studio felt he could stay close to the white hot star of the Sharon Stone was, but it didn't work out. I mean, me and my nephew jolly still imitate the scene in sliver when Billy ball was trying to get back in Sharon Stone's apartment and he keeps saying through the door. Carly, come on, Carly. Let me in. Carly. And we're going, who the fuck talks that way? He was terrible. And when Evans talked to her and allegedly asked this of her to fuck Baldwin, he knew who he was talking to. The whole town knew how Sharon shot to the top that quickly. Aside from being a stone cold knockout, she wasn't a very strong actress yet. She was hot, but to say she was a great actress? No. But everyone knew, don't forget, I'm talking about this is coming off the crotch. The crotch shot in basic instinct, which she says, she was forced to do as well. Well, they're still talking about it 30 some years later, Sharon, they knew what they were doing. Sorry that they saw your cookie for a couple of seconds, not even. It worked. As soon as you mentioned basic instinct, you go to the crotch shop. That's all time movie magic that maybe I'm sorry. But everybody knew who she was and how hard she was coming to be a superstar. And she would do a lot to get in the good graces of a producer or a director. Christ, I told you the story about she and I, why wouldn't you believe she and Billy Baldwin have having a film set fuck? I'm not saying they did, but I don't care that Evan said, give it a shot..

"Usa here's rhonda. Jane levy is with us here on sports. Byline we're talking about her outstanding journalism career. She's an award. Winning journalist author she has authored a number of books bestselling books. I might add you. Were telling the story about phil jackson. Pick it up where it was the first time that i Went into a professional locker room. And i was needless to say quite nervous and I was writing a story for the new york. Daily news magazine about Jocks having gotten all pretty side you know like using cologne and dry their hair with hairdryers. I think that was a result of the famous joe. Hepatoma bringing a hairdryer into the locker room in the sixties and and scandalizing. Everybody so i'm walking around. And i knew enough instinctively not to get in the way of guys who are on deadline. Who really needed to get a quote and get out so. I'm walking around with a very large legal pads face. And while i'm standing there said a days this very thin white wet apparition of a person with a very long with thin white arm. Put his arm around me and said is this your first time and because i'm was well raised I it is. He said he patted me on the head and said well. I just want you to know you're doing really well. And it was little checks and he disappeared back into the shower. Still quite weapons and still quite Naked and he came back still standing there in a day and he says what are you doing here anyway. So i explained that idea the story and he started at me. And he goes over to earl. Bond rose sitting they I guess he was like a locker chef of some sort and says yo pearl you got some smells pearl. Get his face. Brightens oh man. He's like he's got a customer. So you get off the chest and he starts taking out. He had forty seven different kinds of shea butter and cologne and do rags and yet they're so phil start spraying himself with every manner of cologne and then going around the locker room and spraying everyone else and you know and and doing this whole routine for me. with you of just it was hilarious and And generous and then he winked at me and said got enough so you know this was a guy who knew what a story required and he just handed it to me and that kind of That set the tone for me. So did i have difficult moments. His locker rooms after that. Yeah you know. And i would say men do as well as women but within more often. But that's so much set the tone. My expectations were set by him. And i didn't expect the worst all the time. And maybe that's what you know Made it not so bad a lot of the times where we talk about you going to yankee stadium in throwing out the first pitch I know your hero was mickey mantle and in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. You had an opportunity to meet him. I'll let you pick up the story from there. Well yeah. I was in making guy and my dad was a willing guy because he was a giant sky and every day i would my dad come home and i think that would make you did. And then he would throw down the new york post or whatever paper you had with them and say yeah look at willie did so I was attracted to mantle for all the reasons that i think everyone else in america was he. He had a smile. That radiated a kind of post world war two optimism. Where you know. It seemed like we could do anything including bring a kid from nineteen year old kid from commerce oklahoma and make him a starring yankee stadium. Anyway so i get this thing in the mail saying he's hosting a golf tournament charity golf tournament at the claridge hotel in atlantic city which i might add is where my parents had their one. Night honeymoon On december twenty fifth nineteen forty one before my father shipped out. So i'm waiting for him and they had this meant buffet. Set up for all the daytrippers soon. Come down the jersey turnpike or the guard state to gamble and you didn't show up on time and i'm like writing and rewriting all my notes. And finally he comes you know basically stumbling in. And he's standing by a chafing dish filled with eggs that have returned to their powdered state and Sausage that are marinating fat and and sticks out and he says hi mick. And i said hi. I'm nervous nationwide. You think i was gonna pull on your titty. That's a real opener. isn't it it. It was actually funny as it sounds now. It was devastating. And in the course of the next twenty four hours Would say more than twenty four hours my childhood before my eyes and i really was forced to grow up and to see him as the flawed human being that he was Rather than the venerated you know and fallen hero But i i actually kinda liked him. Better you know in human dimension He also of course passed out in my lap late night but You know and remember in the hotel where my mother walked. Virginity was very over. What i went up to my room and cried. Let me ask you about this story because you cover the oakland a.'s. For a period of time. And i understand that the as one time slip to you something in your beer. What's the story there. I was on assignment. Billy martin was a manager and they had reeled off. I think it was twenty. One straight wins. It was like a record and they were you know they were on the cover of time magazine. One news still mattered. And so i got sent out there to do a thing on billy ball which is what everybody was talking about and you just one thing you reach accommodation with guys if you cover them every day you know there. There are ways kind of choreography of preserving people's dignity and privacy Then it's very actually very easily managed if you want it to be but when you walk into a clubhouse this guys you've never met it's a whole different schmear so i'm in there and cliff. Johnson was part of that team then. and i'm trying to ask them questions and while i'm standing there these four guys he was one of them surround me and they say come on in have a drink and you know. That's like a firing offense and i'm like no no no thank you and they go. Now come on just just you know. Have a little bit of a drink for this and i was feeling quite threatened in my on my They were very big. I was very small And so in my fast thinking well. I thought okay. I'll take a sip of whatever it is. They're offering me in this cup and You know and then. I'll be able to say i say i had some and i can go on with my business. Sem questions so. I took a sip. And the next thing i remember was the next thing i knew it was the next morning and I i don't didn't know how i got back to the motel didn't i couldn't nothing. I do a complete blank. And i had to go back to the ballpark the next morning and interview billy martin and i go in his office and he's sitting there in a t shirt and a pair of cowboy boots and that's it with his feet up on the desk. So that kind of gives you an idea of what my choices or i can either walk away or look at that what she wanted me to have to look at And the first thing he out of his mouth was did you sleep. Well jane and it was at that instant that i knew what had happened and i never told anybody i never told my boss. I thought i'd get fired if i if i told him what had happened. and I wrote it fictionally in my novel about my my putative life of female sportswriter. But i never told anybody until just Publicly until just Just before the night. The night. Throughout the pitch yankee stadium fact. Let's move forward to that. Because forty years after in two thousand eighteen the fortieth anniversary of new york court ordering the yankees to open their clubhouse to female reporters. You were asked to throw out that first pitch. Tell me a little bit about how you approach that. And and your thoughts about that experience. Well the first thing i did was call sandy colfax and asked if he would come in and relief until i got in trouble and he he said no and i said what do you coach me. And he said no and i said what he advised me and he said. How far can you throw it this. I knew this back in june And I said well i could probably throw it forty forty five feet now I a practice. And he said stand thirty so Okay i can do that I practiced all summer. I worked out with a trainer by the end of august. I could throw sixty feet six inches and then my arm went dead. I called back. And i i think i think i have a dead arm. He's a he's a dead arm that that's a very good short. That's a. that's a very very good sure. So anyway I took his advice. He said whatever you do. Don't go to the mound I really wanted to. And i was of course feeling intimidated because there was underneath on the internet every day the non from chicago showing off that she can throw from the pitching rubber so i was really tempted But it happened so fast they wouldn't even let me warm up. I was like wait a minute to go out there and not have not have thrown a ball. All you know all day. So but that's the way they do so I go out there and the guy says you know now as they call your name just going out. That's it just don't they'll they'll go. So i remembered to hop over the you know first based on and hop over the truck so that i wouldn't mess up the lines and i went out and tyler tyler teller waiter tire off. This is horrible. I can't remember Number twelve was my catcher. We took a quick picture. I was wearing a yankee jersey with the number sixty from for babies home. Run record And i my. I threw a pitch that i'm not particularly proud of but it got there now. Somebody at the new yorker said it bounced by looked at the videotape from a different angle. I don't think it bounced. And he did not have to get out of his crouch. It was as my daughter said mom you through a curve. We only have a couple minutes left. Then just briefly as you think back on your career. One of the things. I've always said to people. Is that the stories association with our profession is something so very special but In about a minute and a half and you look back on your your career. The moments the things that have been said the things you've had to live with and everything what sticks with you the most jane. Oh boy You know i think. I came of age at that moment in time where women were entering all sorts of professions that had previously been all male and going into the locker. Room is just a you. Know seemingly sexier version of that. Of course you know. It's not sexy at all. It's grotty and dirty and gross smelling And i've always felt that that they're real Bar having women is not so much momentum. Lock i should say it's not so much literal being seen for who you are because women are more likely to not buy into All the competitive stuff that you see that i would see. I don't know that it's still true. But you know. I'd see male reporters trying to say. Oh so tell me about that. Slider pitcher would say. That wasn't a slider. You something guy would be trying to prove his bona feedings where as a report of the question should have been. What did you throw and why did you throw it. You know and so. I think there's a certain advantage of via woman which is to say you. Don't pretend to know what you don't know you don't Pretend to had an experience of at whatever level that you didn't have. I wanna thank you very much for sharing your career and your life and you should be very very proud of jang. Come back and visit with us again anytime on yours. "That's always been the one thing and highlights courtesy, NBC Sports Chicago The whole thing, Tyler Rocky, Nice job on the montage. The one thing Well, there's two things you can figure out through there. One is that they really have the broadcaster fun. Adam means great and, uh Love Stacy because Stacy will always point out and unfortunately for Stacy every time he points out of mistaking it, usually because they can't figure out how to play defense. They don't get out in time. They get out to fire. They don't do something. They're not switching. They're doing this but the broadcaster Great cause Adama mean was asking questions throughout the entire game last night, Brian asking, you know Stacy about, you know, switches, And that's which is I guess the bulls are one of the teams of general what he said that they switch Mork. That any team in the NBA I can't remember now is either more or less, but it was something it stays. He was great to stay. She was explaining the whole thing and the broadcaster Great, but you can't turn the ball over and what Zach Levine said There is exactly right. I mean, you can't Come in, sit down and say OK, we had a 22 point lead. We got to do better. No. Well, he said he said, we straight up full folded, he said, that's it. Basically, you know, don't don't try to feed me any excuses. So it's great that he's aware you're self aware and interesting. The Billy Donovan in the postgame talked about Hey, you know these guys? Late in games against last year before Billy got here, and it was great in the first half the Billy ball, the ball's moving, they're doing what they're supposed to do, switching making shots that they had. But when a young team doesn't know how to win And they don't know how to close games out. It's a dip. You know it's a difficulty and he said these are the guys. Same same things they dealt with last year. They've dealt with us for a while. And he said What 12 13 games into It is a coach. You feel bad. You want to do more to help, but I've got to try and find some different ways to help them as a group. Is. I don't know if it's a group mentality that we got this right now. They're not good enough to say we got no, never And and Donovan did say after the game, and this comes up alive, talked about having to change that losing culture. This has been kind of You know something These guys have dealt with, you know, they dealt with this for a while. I'm you know, whatever is 12 13 games into it with them. They've dealt with this for a while. Having situations like this, and you know, as a coach, you feel bad. You want to be able to do more to help On guy. I've got to try to find some different ways to try to help them as a group. You know, we switched up a lot of different things offensively and, you know, I thought It was opportunities in certain situations that we didn't make the right Reed. We didn't make the right play. We didn't take the ball to the right angle. The screen like a lot of it was just, you know, It's just like there is no reason and And then we got up against the clock to your point, and we're relying on, you know, home run shots that, you know, you know, Zac's last shot goes in and you know you walk out of here and you don't even think about it, but We're gonna have to keep working in practices when we get a chance in film sessions to try toe, get them to understand what happens. This is to me is It is really, really hard to win this league. If you don't do three things and you have to win three battles if you don't win the free throw battle, the rebounding battle of turnover battle. It's really, really difficult and for us we've gotten destroyed and the turnover battle the whole entire year, and until that gets resolved, it's gonna be hard for us to really compete. We'll compete. It's gonna be hard for us to win unless we can. Really execute close out games generate good shots, And we did that in the first half, and we do it for periods of time in the game. We just don't sustain it for long enough period. Hey, brought it up to they shot 60 67% from the free throw line made 16. I'm sorry they shot 72% 18 of 25 yesterday. Levin was five for nine. You just eat the line. You've got to make your they're called free throws. I mean, if if one or two guys and we can make all the free throws, everybody should be able to. It's really simple. What Billy Donovan said. They're too is we didn't make the right. Reed didn't make the right decision. It's between the years, right? It's focus. It Z keeping your mind to the task at hand. It's one thing If you're playing the Lakers, LeBron's going off and you can't doing this stop because you're just the teller margin is so great that The team with all the talent decided to get the business and they just what the floor with you because they're capable of doing that. That's not the local Oklahoma City thunder at this point, right? So when you have a team like that down and you, you Pretty much just have to put the finishing touches on it. It would have been interesting. Billy studio. Zack makes that last shot. You only think about it. Well, I don't know that. You really I think I take the loss instead. Because I want the guys to feel exactly being sounded like you thought I wanted them when Billy Donald and gets him on the practice for next time. To coach him up. I want them being ticked off or whatever. If you won the game, you might have an element on that team. Some guys without what's the big deal with it. We find a way right? We gave it up with coughed it up. We turned the ball over all those times. We found a way, so maybe it's better that you gave up a win for team not going to the playoffs in order to have the old teachable moment, right coaching moment. We'll see. Yeah, well, see, they play the Mavs. Tomorrow Colors. Hang in there. We'll get right to you here on ESPN. 1000, ESPN 1000, Chicago's home for sports..
"billy ball" Discussed on KNBR The Sports Leader
"Tober with Yeah. We're gonna be joined by Dan Rules announced the voice of the year. One of the voices of the San Jose Sharks get you ready for the Season opener, the lid lifter for the Sharks tonight, Tim Hardaway. We'll join us, Ted Furman doing Let's talk about odds and whatnot. And then Oh, No matter what day No matter what the weather is, so it's a good time for Billy Martin. Bill Martin will join us. Today, and we'll talk about well. Who knows what we'll talk about with with Bill. It's always good happened Bill on and by the Web and blank there for a minute, the sharks or playing the yotz, the Coyotes, the desert dogs down in the Down in the desert, fellas, What's going on, you know? Man When you said Billy Martin was on all of sudden, I was thinking, Billy ball, and it's the irascible Billy Martin. But yes, Bill Martin. Katie view is his own kind of wonderful. But, man, Are you drunk? No, but I did watch the bill. It's funny Sight did watch the moment Martin thing last night on TV, So it's like I've got Billy Martin on the brain. And then you said Billy Martin joins us and I had a picture. Of the A's and Yankees manager and longtime Yankee. Was Helen's have been dead. Look it up. It's been a number of years now with a terrible car accident and 20 minutes shield. I think he passed away on Christmas Day at least 25 1989 Christmas Day 1989 32 years ago. 31 years ago, Dad While yeah, I remember reading his book. I guess it was there was a ditch out near the house and He'd had a few and I guess the lights. It wasn't a well lighted areas. So ran the car into the Into the bitch and That's it. It's funny to you. No. You think Billy Martin and you all the fighting with Steinbrenner in the bar room brawls and brawling with Ed Whitson and all these guys, and it's like you watch the first five minutes of the documentary. They had his mom on, Cameron. You're like, Oh, I get it now I get it. She was just rough. She was a tough lady man. Let me ask you this before we got it from her, And I'm sure we'll, uh Shortly get to the news that urban Meyer is going to be coaching in the NFL Now organ. Bargain. It's your cut, Bulky his G M C. All he does is gonna be the GM. That was the talk. I mean, you gotta do better than that. Just a field crew. Urban Meyer comes into the world of the NFL. His maiden voyage and He agrees. Literally bulky be is GM, Then a reminder. Don't want to be around too long. You could do better than that. Come on. Well, you know no. Trimbach ease the G M when you're the GM, but you just don't want both titles. He's gonna be like the cheese could be better than work. And then you're gonna have the final say you. You need somebody to do all the work and getting none of the credit and I understand that completely. You could still do better than Trent Baalke. Can we agree on that before we get to times will see this I do. His reputation, Rod, you know is always really strong as a personnel evaluator. But he made some baffling calls. Thank you for making my point. You can do better than trend. Balky is your GM even if he's a real GM, or he's the guy that does the GM work, But you're the dude that's actually picking the players. Can we agree you could do better than Trent Baalke? I think we can agree that you could do better than trump. Thank you. Sort of rough time. Please go ahead. No, no words. No words I did. This isn't this isn't all that important. I just actually thought about it when we're talking about Billy Martin because I read that book. And it was a really, really good book. And it got me thinking because we've talked about this frequently over the past few years. How, and we talked about it a couple weeks ago how we could name any baseball manager. So there's old witch baseball managers were just like who? What? Who's that dude? Back Then we all knew these guys, and they all had personalities. And they all had stories to go along with it. Whether it's in game stories in the bar stories on the road stories, there's always stories to go along with it. Uh, who In the Big Three right now. Do you want to read a book about Managers and coaches because back then you could pick a bunch of guys and there's brother. I mean, most of them are done by now. But you're like, Oh, yeah. I mean, Thomas sort of just passed. I died. Thomas sort of book. Absolutely. There's a okay about them or book a book by them or about them now about them like in a biography like You're not. You know whether it's him doing it or somebody else doing it. Usually it's better when somebody else does it cause when you get there really good stories, But I'm trying to think Yeah, I'm trying to think who Who today I mean pop comes to mind Pop comes to mind for sure Military should be interest. We'll hear what he has one. He had one last year that came out. I think Ian O'Connor wrote a book. In fact, I get it sitting on my Sitting on my desk that ever the 1st 10 pages and I'm like, Damn, I gotta grind through the Bill Belichick like wonder you things like five. I don't want to get down with one of the coaching stuff. I don't wanna get the background stuff. So you better check the book. It's just like Bill Belichick. Yeah, well, it's only 10 Year 10 pages I can, but it's like, you know, you need that background stuff to do, But it's like you grind through it to try to get to like that. Want to find out what happened? We got a little bit Little bit older, but you know when you when you read about them when they're younger, and it kind of helps inform you who they become as a coach, But anyway, I got to get to that. I think Phil Jackson has went out. Already some just trying to think like who is the short list for Inter? Who's that for me, Phil? Because Bill's already I think Phil has won. I think Phil's already there dare to have a book on On Phil. So I'm saying they have guys that are coaching today. Currently, right guys there coaching today. Big three Sports who Popovich came to mind immediately. Chill man because he's a character and he's lived in these kind of goes to the beat of his own drum..
