As House debt ceiling vote nears, Biden shores up Democrats and McCarthy scrambles for GOP support
"House speaker Kevin McCarthy continues scrambling for GOP support as the dead ceiling and budget cuts package heads to a vote today. McCarthy insists he will have the votes to pass a bill, he says, makes historic spending cuts. If I remember of Congress, I wouldn't want history to pass me by. But Florida's Byron donalds and others on the right Flank are skeptical. I'm trying to figure out exactly what conservatives should be happy about. Few lawmakers on either side aren't fully satisfied with the compromise, leaving McCarthy and President Biden trying to gain enough support from the political center, a rarity and divided Washington. The president said in top negotiators to capital hill for a morning meeting where top house Democrat had came Jeffries pledged his support for the bill. Ahead of House debt ceiling vote, Biden shores up Democrats and McCarthy scrambles for GOP support
"The president and House speaker are scrambling for support ahead of a house debt ceiling vote. The debt limit and budget cuts package that squeaked through the House rules committee on a 7 to 6 vote is headed to the U.S. House. President Biden and speaker Kevin McCarthy are trying to assemble a centrist bipartisan coalition to get it passed and avert a potentially disastrous U.S. default in less than a week. We'll pass the bill. Speaker McCarthy is of all the congresses in the past. You're going to add up all the money that they rescinded and add them together. This is higher than that. 218 votes are needed in a 435 member House, the deal faces opposition from hard right Republicans who say the budget cuts don't go far enough. Trillions and trillions of dollars in debt for crumbs for a pittance. Representative Scott Perry is the chairman of the freedom caucus. This deal fails, fails completely. The White House said President Biden has had more than 100 individual phone calls with lawmakers, House democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, says Democrats will do their part. We're not interested in political gamesmanship. We're interested in avoiding a catastrophic default. Liberals are upset the deal greenlights a new work requirements for older Americans on food aid and a natural gas pipeline through Appalachia, Jennifer King, Washington

Debt limit deal heads to vote in full House while McCarthy scrambles for GOP approval
"The debt ceiling and budget deal worked out between House speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden has advanced to the full House, where a vote is expected Wednesday. I'm Ben Thomas with a look at its progress. The House rules committee voted 7 to 6 to advance the bill, chairman Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican calling it a product of compromise. And reflects the realities of a divided government. We shouldn't allow that to overshadow what this bill accomplishes. It would restrict spending for the next two years while also suspending the nation's debt limit during that time, and the nonpartisan congressional budget office says it reduces deficits by $1.5 trillion over the decade, but South Carolina Republican Ralph Norman also a member of the freedom caucus was disappointed. We had a real bill that was going to make a difference. We did in the original bill. This being watered down is completely takes the teeth out of it. And I see why the Democrats vote for it. I see it now. He and Texas congressman chip Roy, who earlier in the day, said not one Republican should vote for this deal. Join Democrats in opposing the bill's advance. Ranking Democrat Jim mcgovern of Massachusetts accusing the GOP of weaponizing the debt ceiling, saying it's a precedent that will forever haunt the nation. One party can use the full faith and credit of the United States as a hostage to pass their widely unpopular ideas. Adding, someday, hopefully not in my lifetime, but someday there will be a Republican president. And you will remember this moment because what you are trying to do is get things enacted that you could not get done through regular order. Ben Thomas, Washington

Kevin McCarthy: Dems Will Say There's Nothing in the Bill for Them
"First McCarthy cut to go Right because at this point you guys only Republicans only control one half of one branch of government So for you to get what you got was great For the most part because the Republicans did much better in this than the Democrats did obviously And to your point Joe Biden tends to negotiate Go ahead There are going to be You know a bunch of Republicans on the big vote are going to vote now You're going to need a bunch of Democrats to say you know what I can't believe I'm doing this I'm going to vote with Kevin McCarthy Well normally when you make when you come to an agreement with two different parties you have people on both parties vote for it But the difficulty that's different than any time before is the Democrats will tell you there's nothing in the bill for them Nothing The president numerous times He kept asking for tax increases new government programs and I just said no And he says well there's nothing in it for us to vote for That's debt ceiling I'm not sure people want to go past that deadline and interest rates go up in others I think this is a good first step but we can go much further And I have a plan for that coming forward where we can look at the entire budget and tackle our problems especially in a bipartisan way This is reasonable This is sensible but it's also responsible thing to do He's among the most popular Republicans in the country And there's at least one common cause he's talking about making a motion to remove him as speaker So I don't follow the kamikazes

Facing GOP backlash, McCarthy labors to shore up votes for debt deal in time to prevent US default
"House speaker Kevin McCarthy is hunting votes for the dead ceiling and budget deal he negotiated with President Biden, a bill conservatives are blasting for not having enough spending cuts. Some Republicans like Oklahoma's Tom Cole say the bill does the job by avoiding a debt default. And we will achieve real reductions in spending while doing so. But the hard right house freedom caucus and chairman Scott Perry say there aren't nearly enough. And we will do everything in our power to stop it. With some conservatives warning of potentially trying to oust McCarthy. I'm not sure what everybody wanted. We couldn't get everything we wanted. He needs two thirds of Republicans to approve the bill. Here at The White House. This compromise agreement is reasonable for both sides. Budget chief shalanda young says the discussion now should be about getting the bill to President Biden, not about which party won. The American people came out ahead. Sen. Mike Lee: This Imposter Bill Puts the Onerous on Republicans
"I find it odd that we undermine their own piece of legislation which already passed the House for a week or bill that you now have to fight to pass the House That call me crazy center but that sounds like regression not progress It is regression precisely And we undermine that in the process we undermine all Republicans Look a few weeks ago I put out a letter a letter that we signed by 43 Senate Republicans We only needed 41 but we got 43 three others that they agreed with the substance of it for strategic reasons didn't want to sign it What that essentially said was let's assuming those 43 at a minimum would have been willing to vote to pass Bill like limits save grow What that meant was that it would be up to the Democrats because it'd be up to the Democrats to limit safe growth had already passed in the House They didn't even need to Democrats over there All we needed then was for Chuck Schumer to find 17 Democrats to vote for it So as to avoid what the Democrats themselves are touting as an imminent emergency By doing this by coming forward with this impostor bill that purports to have all these savings measures in it but on further examination it's just smoke and mirrors he's now put the onus back on Republicans You watch remark my words Dan what they're going to do this is going to unite Democrats Democrats are going to be just thrilled about this You will have more Democrats excited to vote for it than you have Republicans This will be good for them put the onus back on Republicans You're already seeing conservative Republicans who are opposing it Being attacked And that is because of this very thing And by the way the reason the only reason why they have any ability to claim that this is the only deal is because of this fake June 5th deadline

Debt ceiling takeaways: Biden's invite to liberal skeptics to 'talk to me,' McCarthy's balancing act

His debt ceiling deal with House speaker Kevin McCarthy runs 99 pages, both can point to provisions they can call victories, funding medical care for veterans and changing work requirements for government aid and streamlining environmental reviews for energy projects. Judge halts South Carolina’s new stricter abortion law until state Supreme Court review

The law is similar to one in 2021 that was struck down after the justices ruled three to two that it violated the state constitution's right to privacy lawmakers say the new law includes technical tweaks meant to appeal to justice John few, who wrote in his previous opinion that legislators didn't show that they did any work to determine if 6 weeks was enough time for a woman to know she was pregnant. "The best news on Hamlin and believe me, I wish we could give it to you. As of right now, he remains in critical condition after a cardiac arrest. I'm praying for a miracle for demar de wake up and see the beautiful support he's received from across the world for this young man who is so selflessly given to those in need to be able to live a full life. I can't stop thinking about damar's mom, Nina, who was in the stadium and ultimately rode in the ambulance to the university of Cincinnati medical center. She's in a nightmare, no mother should have to endure. Thinking of his dad, Mario, and 9 year old brother demir, demar is his hero. I'm heartbroken for the players who saw what no one ever imagined seeing on that field. A jarring reminder of the fragility of life. We love this game for so many reasons that don't seem important right now. As that love has morphed into fervent hope for demar Hamlin's life. The family released a statement this afternoon that read on behalf of our family, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to demar during this challenging time. We are deeply moved by the prayers kind words and donations from fans around the country. We also want to acknowledge the dedicated first responders and healthcare professionals at the university of Cincinnati medical center who have provided exceptional care to damar. We feel so blessed to be part of the Buffalo Bills organization and to have their support. We also want to thank coach Taylor and the Bengals for everything they've done. Your generosity and compassion mean the world to us. Please keep damar in your prayers. We will release updates as soon as we have them. Thank you, the Hamlin family. Coley Harvey has been at the hospital since last night gathering news. Coley, what do we know about the status of Hamlin right now? Laura, we know essentially what you just referenced. And that is the fact that damar Hamlin is still in critical condition. What we can tell you as well as according to the Buffalo Bills in a statement released earlier this afternoon, Hamlin was taken into the ICU last night when he arrived at University of Cincinnati medical center, and he remains in the ICU. That is according to a statement from the team. We've also heard not just from the family and from the bills, but also even from the Bengals who released a statement via owner Mike Brown earlier today, and he commented on something that you just referenced from the family. And that is the first responders, those medical responders on the field who administered the care immediately to demar Hamlin, giving him that CPR that was so crucial with this particular injury. And according to Mike Brown's statement, he says his medical personnel undertook extraordinary measures, both teams demonstrated respect and compassion while fans in the stadium and people around the country bolstered the support for demar and the love for each other. And that's the sentiment that we've been gathering all throughout these last 16, 18 or so hours since this injury occurred. What has the scene been like at the hospital today is we continue to wait for the next update. It has begun to pick up. We've been out here again, all night last night, all morning today. It was pouring rain earlier this morning. So you didn't really see the same response that we saw last night in terms of the fans showing up to pay some level of respect. That is beginning to happen. We're starting to see a tribute just about a block or so this way from where I'm standing right now. That's beginning to grow. A few fans were actually out at 3 p.m. eastern, holding a moment of silence for demar Hamlin. They also set a prayer at that moment. And I've been told that at 8 55 p.m. eastern tonight, which is the same time when demar went down on the field. That fans are going to hold a candlelight vigil as they continue to try to lift him up. They're going to do that just another block or so like I said down from where I'm standing right now and will be monitoring that and seeing just how many people turn out because again, The Rain has stopped. It's a lot clearer right now. Just quickly, I want to also add last night. I had a chance to see bill's receiver Stefon Diggs coming in right here at this corner in an Uber and I actually helped him walk towards the emergency room because he didn't know exactly where to go. And as he told me and later told the police officer who kind of had to question both of us as he was trying to make his entrance, he said, look, I'm frustrated right now. We need answers. We want to know what's going on with our teammate. That's our brother. And eventually the police officer let him through. And so I can tell you that Stefon Diggs did get a chance to go into the hospital, but as we also know the bills are back in Buffalo today. Does support for Hamlin worldwide thanks to Cooley Harvey from the latest there and we'll check back in with you if anything happens. Hamlin went to high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania played his college ball at Pitt. Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin, as you see there, had a personal relationship with Hamlin. He spoke about that today. It's about demar Hamlin. Man, it's a really personal thing for me. Being a Pittsburgh and that young man being a Pittsburgh, I've known that guy, probably since he was about 12, just got a lot of respect and love for him as a human being. His commitment to the pursuit of his goals and dreams of doing what it is he's doing right now, which is playing in the NFL and to watch him make personal decisions and make that a realization, it's just an honor to get to know young people like that. Had an opportunity to express that to them whenever I see them, we've played buffalo, each of the last two seasons, and he and I get to have a moment. Because it's just cool to not only appreciate these guys in terms of where they are now, but to know them since they were younger people and to watch their maturation, their development to watch them, you know, earn what they've been chasing. It's just really a cool thing. And he's an example of that. I got a lot of love for that young man. We lifted here him and that organization up in prayer. Dan orlowski and Marcus spears with us. Dan, what was it like for you watching all of this unfold last night? Uh, yeah, so last night I was traveling back from a college football game and in the airport in RC, Ryan Clark, FaceTimed me. And I was like, man, why is RCI? I wasn't there in a television FaceTime me and I answered the phone and he's like, bro, damar Hamlin just collapsed in the game. And I was like, what do you mean on the sidelines or something? He's like, no, and he explained the events of what happened. And I'm sitting there going like thinking like, what are you talking about? You're like, I've never heard this when it comes to a football game. And I see RCs like facial expressions and the way he's speaking and immediately I knew this is different. You know, this was very real to RC. And so after chatting for a little bit, I'm like, all right, I got to find my way to a television. And as I got to the television, like my initial thought was like, he'll be okay. He's a football player. He's going to be okay. And then as I watched. As I watched the teammates reactions, like I thought of the locker room. And I thought of, you know, the relationships that football builds and thinking how football for everything that is, it's just so different. It's just so those people that you share the locker room with a different relationship than basically any you have in your life outside of maybe your spouse. You're tested through more. You've been through more together. You share so many similar goals and dreams and aspirations. You've come from so many similar challenges and when you, when you see the teammates reaction, when I saw the teammates reaction, I thought to myself,

"Don't know if I could, or if someone asked me to bet something an amount of money that I care about, I feel like I can't just can't go against Patrick Mahomes and it's a logical, it's emotional, but we've seen him do it so many times. So many impressive things. And I guess our last memory of him is like turning into a terrible quote. Our last playoff memory of him is turning into a terrible quarterback for the second half of that championship game against the Bengals, but I also am a little down on them and we talked about this in the last part because they don't have a true number one and I think the difference between them and the bills is the bills have potentially two true number ones. I guess I don't know exactly how good Gabe Davis is because he's come up in a world where Stefon Diggs is the actual number one, but he's really good also. He's making really incredible big plays and tough situations. So the bills are the better team and I just I've got to pick them to win this week, but when they meet in the playoffs, which feels inevitable, I don't know if I can do that. What do you think? Okay, so this one's fascinating to me because well obviously it's fascinating because it's the matchup of the two best teams in the NFL. But beyond that, I think it's really interesting how our public perception has totally shifted on these teams and I say that because the bills are two and a half point road favorites in this game. And they open this two point favorite. So people are betting the bills up on the road in Kansas city. That's pretty indicative that we now trust Josh Allen, the regulations and quarterback as much or more than we trust Patrick Mahomes. And I don't really think that's wrong. The bills are operating as like a at this point. Statistically, it's like one of the top 5 offense as we've ever seen. But I don't really think that's what separates them from the chiefs right now. Yeah, they're awesome, but the chiefs are also number one and EPA. Offensively. And basically, I think the defense is the separating factor in this game. You think it's the receivers. I think it's the bills have one of the best defenses in the NFL. Yeah, that's fair. And even down one of their superstar safeties, their defense is still really good. They talk about this before how they take the pressure off of their corners because that's where their inexperienced at least until they get TRE davious white back who's a really great corner. Then this team gets even better. And they have a closer and we talk about like, I think the ravens are the best example of a team that was built and a complimentary fashion, like not this year necessarily but when the ravens were at their peak,

"Josh Allen playing God level football right now. When Josh Allen was bored, he was born to be the quarterback of the Buffalo Bills. Ackling George kittle. Let's go. Let's finish. Snap. Gonna keep it himself runs left side has room. Oh my God. Touchdown buffalo. Josh Allen. He fooled everyone. I just don't think he goes into the game thinking there is not a single play that I can't make. Let's go. It's a huge week in the NFL is training camps begin across the league and Josh Allen and the bills need one thing to find success at the super bowl level would tell you what that is. In Jacksonville, Trevor Lawrence showed us the good, bad and head scratching last year. Someone here has a formula Doug Peterson can use to make Lawrence shine consistently. That's the key. And devonte Adams called Derek Carr a Hall of Famer. Then he had to walk it back. We'll bring you all that and explain it. Welcome to NFL live. We're less than 24 hours from every single team across the league, arriving at camp, we made it through the off season everyone can take a deep breath. Menace, Tim Hasselbeck, Diana rossini here with you for the next 60 minutes and we start things off in Buffalo. So let's go there now. With von Miller heading to the bills and immediately providing a significant boost for this defense. One of the many reasons this team is a no brainer pick for a lot of people to win the Super Bowl. We saw Miller's impact on the field when it mattered most for the rams last year. But how about what he brings to the table outside of that? He spoke to the media yesterday. All super bowl teams, you know, they have similarities and success leaves clues and as long as we just, as long as we just keep chipping away at it, you know, I feel like we would be okay whenever I can interject, you know, some of my knowledge and some of my wisdom or if I can see something where I could, you know, put my two cents in and I'll do it, but I'm not a, I'm not a preachy rah rah guy, you know, I'm coming out trying to make my plays and trying to get my job done. And whenever it's time for von Miller to talk out, you know, I'm gonna be the first one to do it. The bill has added Miller to a defense. It was already one of the best in the NFL, buffalo's defense led the league in points per game, yards per play in QBR allowed last season. They also pressured opposing quarterbacks at the second highest rate in the league and this was despite the fact that star cornerback TRE davious white of course tour is ACL in week 12 and missed the remainder of the season. You wonder how some of those things down the postseason stretch would have gone if white had been healthy. So Mina, when you look at this bill's defense, what's the biggest question you have entering the season? Well, it's the bill. So it's a baby question because we're really picking nits where we're trying to find issues with this roster. But the question is cornerback. I think the past rush is going to be even better with von Miller and with TRE davious white still out with an injury, supposed to return on time. You look to The Rookie, Kyrie lam, out of Florida, first round pick this year and ask, is he going to be called into action week one against not a team you want to be calling to action against the Los Angeles Rams? You know, I'm not terribly concerned though, assuming white's not out for an extended period of time because you alluded to him getting hurt last year, week 12 after that the opposing QBR of quarterbacks that they face dropped from Lois league to third lowest in the league. Some of that is due to the outstanding play of his replacements. Levi Wallace, who's now gone with Pittsburgh, Dane Jackson, will probably play immediately, but it's also because of the pass rush, which you mentioned is one of the best in the NFL, one of the deepest in the FL, of course, helps out in coverage. And then the fact that this team has, I believe, the best safety duo in the league. And the way they play coverage, I think it allows them to protect the cornerback play a lot. So as long as it's not hurt for too long, I'm not too worried. Yet meat, I want to circle back to your davious white, right? So I can't really explain almost can't even put into words the impact he has had on this defense, not just on the field, but all the fields he is a clear team leader. So where he's at now, he started off camp on the public and head coach Sean McDermott says he's right on schedule. He's rehabbing and working really hard to try to get back and guys, you know with ACLs. Everyone's really different with how they bounce back from in some comeback really early. Some takes a little bit of time, but for them, they said the trainers are telling the bills front office that they're right on schedule, things are looking good. So they certainly want them back, but in the meantime, of course, all the headlines are up in Buffalo right now or the fact that von Miller is part of this team. He's trying to be just the first player ever to win three super bowls, just three different teams, and you know, you take a look about back when he was with the rams and how happy and how much he enjoyed being there. He has said he now wants to be sort of that cherry on top of this Sunday in Buffalo trying to win a Super Bowl to put them over the edge to be that guy and I know I spoke with some members of this coaching staff who told me really as much as he's a fantastic player. We could talk about that all show long. A lot of it is just the presence of von Miller with those young pass rushers as he's going to continue to coach and teach them and get them ready to play in the NFL. Yeah, Diana, that's like one of the fanciest cherries on top. You could ever get. It's a really high class cherry. All right, Josh Allen also addressed the media yesterday. He was asked about the lofty expectations for the team this season, listen to this. We're a new team. We're a different team. You know, we know that. We understand that. We've got new pieces. We've got a new offensive coordinator. We've got a new mindset. So again, just trying to find what we are, what our identity is, that's really what training camp is for. And there's no higher expectations than what we have for ourselves in the locker room. And again, I think if you're a team that doesn't have Super Bowl or nothing in your minds, I don't think that you're doing it the right way. Obviously that's the main goal is to win world championships and we got to find a way to get it done. But again, it starts with week one. So Mina said this really well earlier with the bills, it's like you are picking nits here, but that's what we're doing because they are a contender to win the Super Bowl. So Tim, for as high as the expectations are and the bills just talked about it. They're what's one thing you want to see change on the offense this year. Well, I actually think this is a big thing for their offense. Lauren would be just create more balance and get more production in the run game out of people other than Josh Allen. You know, it's why they drafted James cook in the second round, the running back out of Georgia. But the reality is when you look at the last two seasons for the Buffalo Bills and they're all offense. It's been awesome. And Josh Allen's been the reason why explosive plays. He's run the football well. But on 8 different occasions, he's been the leading ball carrier. I mean, most Russia attempts in games for the bills. You can't do that. That's second to only Lamar Jackson. I think we would all agree that those offenses are drastically different. They're depending way too much on Josh Allen in the run game. And so I think in fairness to him in the passing game, some help in the run game would go a long way. And also quite honestly, ends up helping them playing games where they envision playing games in the postseason in Buffalo where, you know, that type of football certainly travels. Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Ten minutes, obviously what defense is want them to do is run the ball. They got a lot of the same looks as the Kansas City Chiefs last year with a defense of sitting back in those two high shell looks. And much like the Kansas City, chiefs at times they struggled against that, but you saw offensive coordinator Brian dabel make some adjustments as the year went on, started using the tight ends and the full back more. And I think Josh Allen was part of that, but you're right in that he shouldn't be the only answer in running the football. And I think that's something they're going to look to, whether it's with cook or bringing in OJ Howard, as an extra tight end, more often at the beginning of this season. Yeah, having covered cook a lot in college, I think bills fans should be really excited about what he brings to the table. He's really electric running back and fits nicely in

"So you shoot safely, you get your free needle. And then you just go walk back into society like it's no big deal, a half hour later or whatever it is. Supposedly there's a disposable box, you put your thing, like I take my kids to the park, these people go and shoot up everyone in it. Right. But you can't actually think that smart. You have to have something wrong with you. But that's how crazy this world is now. And there is such a divide. And I think in a good way, I feel as though we are the good guys on the literally and figuratively, the right side of arguments because look at the country. I mean, whether it's New York City Democrats trying to kill this bill's least deal. And that's one of the reasons why I supported two screw New York City. Where I would say, you know what? I'd rather them spend it on the bills and keeping the team here rather than these left wing projects. But look at society now. It's not just this argument. Disney taking on Florida in that defunding the police. I mean, and I also think that people on the left side of the spectrum, they couldn't be happier, that were approaching $5 a gallon for gas. Because that means everyone's going to go out now and buy an electric car. Which fits their agenda, which I think the entire planet took just a crazy pill, whether it's the Florida issue or New York City. And I think that's why you know the New York Post also reported that Lee zeldin's basically statistically even with Kathy hochul in the race for governor. No Republican is any business coming close anywhere in New York State of winning a statewide race. Where are we with Cuomo on this? I think he's running. Oh, I hope this Andrew Cuomo who will send you the file, go for it, buddy. We might even endorse you to get it into the race because, you know, again, the post reported that big dog strategies poll, which is one on the bill stuff and also on the governor's race that Lee zeldin is up 6 points on Andrew Cuomo and is in a statistical dead heat with Kathy hochul. Oh, I hope Andrew Cuomo, right? Don't you think there'd be an amazing race? I let me say this. If that guy runs and he's the nominee, it is the most outrageous thing I've ever seen. God bless America. I mean, how that guy went from public enemy number one. His brother gets fired from CNN, right? And then the whole thing from the last year and a half or whatever it's been. And then whatever's about. And then to all of a sudden, you go from public enemy number one to the democratic candidate in New York. And then he could win, too. There's no saying he couldn't win either. Oh, I think Lee Zelda beats him bot. I mean, hell hath no fury like a governor like Cuomo forced to resign. Yes..

Like, you must get that all the time. Like the equate buffalo or this region with the bills. Oh, absolutely. Yes, it's a riot thing the whole thing is it's a riot to me. I have the most fun with it going. And yeah, the bills mafia is known all over the country, a hugely. You can't even, it's hard to imagine. That really is, but yeah, I mean, I was just out in Arizona. I had people come up to me and said they knew who I was and stop and I wasn't even dressed like Elvis, you know? So it's something. The bills fans and the Buffalo Bills are known all over this country. And I'll tell you, I mean, to your point, too, it's buffalo and the bills is one and the same. Like there's not one without the other, right? And I think, you know, I have friends that went to school in Syracuse or went to school in Florida, my family from Florida and bills mafia two people is like, it's the greatest fan base in the world. And that includes soccer teams in Europe. It's truly known as one of the greatest fan base in the world. And I can't imagine losing that feeling. And not to mention, when it's bills playoff time, which that was the first time in my lifetime I remember it the last two years, right? Three years, I should say, 'cause they lost a wild card around three years ago. But it changes the city. I mean, the feeling around the week, like, you know, work you're talking to clients about or whatever you do, you're talking to people about it. And the anticipation, the excitement for Sunday or Monday or whatever it is, it's nothing like I've ever seen before because my life of watching the bills has been the drought or terrible or they lose in Nashville and the music city miracle like that's my wife a bill as a bills fan, right? And now seeing the real what it must have felt like in those four super bowls, it changes your life weekly daily. It's amazing. Yeah, you know, I lived through the 70s as a little kid. I remember hating Don greasy and it was like in the Miami Dolphins and then in the 80s I moved away for a while and I came back in the 90s and with the Jim Kelly era and the team steamroll and then, oh, so much fun. I got my season tickets in 92. And then you'll live through the Super Bowl. You live through the drought years, a lot of cold games, a lot of bad football, but I tell anybody, you know, we've lived through so much in this region with our economics and bad football through the drought years or whatever. I mean, it makes for the best people and the best fan base going. It really does. It's where resilient hardy, fun loving bunch. Well, John, not many people share that sentiment outside of buffalo..

"Hey guys, are you ready for some money rehab? Wall Street has been completely upended by an unlikely player. GameStop. Should I have a 401k? 'cause then I have to do it. No, I know. You and your money. Well, it doesn't. Charge for wasting our time. I will take a check. You recognize her from anchoring on CNN, CNBC, and Bloomberg. The only financial expert you don't need a dictionary to understand. The cold lappin. Sometimes it feels like all the financial rules are stacked against us. And no industry is more guilty of making us feel this way than the healthcare industry. In money rehab episode one 60 titled four one one on hospital bills and medical debt, my guest Shelley rosenfeld, who is the co director of the cancer legal resource center, pointed out that medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy in America. I hate that statistic. I really do. If you have problems with your health, the last thing you should have to deal with is financial stress. And yet, it happens. A lot, and it is happening to a listener who DMed us on Instagram at money rehab show and wants to remain anonymous. So let's just call her Michelle. Michelle reached out to me and said she recently had a miscarriage. And because of the medical care she received during her miscarriage, she is now in medical debt and needs help. This story truly breaks my heart. When you're grieving, you should not have to deal with financial strain ever. A health complication is hard enough to weather without the added stress of bills you simply can't pay. If you're going through a difficult time, you need the space and the time to process and take care of yourself. I know firsthand how important it is to have that. I had a miscarriage last year and it was one of the hardest days of my life. In my own experience when I first had my miscarriage, it was hard to say out loud to anyone even to close friends. And even now it's still hard to say out loud. It makes my heart heavy, just to think about Michelle being forced to have that conversation and explain her experience over and over again to bill collectors who are not the warmest and fuzziest of people before she's ready to do so. I talked about my own miscarriage in episode 26 called the hidden cost of miscarriage. And in that episode, I brought on a then new friend ayanna, a journalist and a blogger extraordinaire. Like me and Michelle, ayana also had a miscarriage and she wrote a powerful piece about it in The Washington Post. In my episode with ayana, she does mention that she was able to negotiate her medical debt after having her miscarriage. So I know that other people in Michelle's situation have been able to negotiate those kind of medical bills. But I also know that medical bills can be negotiated in other cases as well. I've also negotiated medical debt over the years for a variety of issues. I'm going to tell you one story, but before I do, I just want to say to Michelle, thank you for reaching out and sharing what you're going through. You are in my heart. And I'm sorry for your loss. So here's my experience with negotiating medical debt. When I set out to start my own business, I filed for cobra, which allowed me to continue the health insurance I had with my last employer as long as I paid the full premium, which was expensive around 600 bucks a month. But then I made a late payment. I got no mercy. The next thing I knew I was booted off the program, I had to find another individual health plan, which I did for 1100 bucks a month, nearly double what I had been shelling out before. And as if the universe hadn't paid me back enough for losing track of that bill before my new plan kicked in, I came down with a nasty stomach virus. I will spare you the details of that sent me to the ER. Guess what? Not covered. It was a $2000 nightmare. I panicked, naturally. Then I negotiated my butt off. People think that when they get a bill from a hospital, it's set in stone. It's not. Any money rehabber will tell you that no bill is set in stone. So here's what you should do. Get an itemized hospital bill. Yes, even if you have all the money in the world, get an itemized hospital bill so that you can see exactly where the charges are coming from. As it turns out, I was on the hook for an $800 x-ray that I'd never even had. I mean, come on, stomach viruses are bad, but they don't need x-rays. I am not a doctor and I know that. There wasn't much they could say to that argument. So they gave in on that. But even the remaining $1200 was still way too much for me. So I kept tagging until the bill came down to about 600 bucks. That's right, I negotiated my medical bill. Here's the secret, the hospital knows from the outset that there's a small chance they'll never recover the full and typically outrageous amount from you. So with a little pushback, okay, well, sometimes a lot, they'll take care of what they can. Next, you should look around online for the fair market price for a procedure or treatment before you pay a cent. Average costs, of course, vary by region or even city. So you should know what you're getting into. Then, call your healthcare provider and clear case openly and honestly, offering to work with a payment plan or pay a reduced rate in cash if possible. If they think they'd have a better chance of collecting 75% of the total cost than 100% of the total cost from you, they'll likely work with you to make that reduced rate happen. And this should go without saying, but get your negotiation on before the bill is due. The provider will be much more accommodating if the bill is still active, not late. After all, zigging the bill collectors on you is not only annoying, but think about it. It's also costly for them too. Your health is priceless, of course, but that doesn't mean you should be sticker blind when it comes to your healthcare costs. Oh, and pay your premium. Or you'll pay a premium. For today's tip you can take straight to the bank. If your medical bills are in collections, you are not powerless. You have important rights that need to be observed and respected. Tune into tomorrow's episode where I'll be talking about all of those rights and how to make them work for you. Money money rehab is a production of iHeartRadio. "Like that. But the Patriots have been a much much better team when they win the turnover margin so far this season, they are 8 no. They are even last year with Cam Newton in that team. They were 6 O when they won the turnover margin. So they are undefeated in their last 14 games when they win the turnover margin. So they need to they need to stop there. Now, you know, look, the weather on Saturday night is going to factor into this. It's going to be the same for both teams. I don't think that buffalo necessarily has any advantage because they're from buffalo. I do think they have a little bit of an advantage because I think their quarterback is built much better to play in these conditions due to his mobility, his power running ability, his just his size, his arm strength, all that stuff, but, you know, that's where they need to start Mac Jones needs to start fast. He can not do what he did in the first half. He can't do the first interception on his first pass attempt on a very simple coverage. Can't fumble a snap from center. I don't care who the center is. But that's where offensively they just can't turn the ball over, you know? And then it sort of once I do that, then I think that gives them a decent chance to win this game. So on the other side of the token, the goal would be to turn over Josh Allen. No interceptions this season against the Patriots and the two games did lose a fumble in that 1410 when in early December, you think though there is a possibility day ball, the offensive coordinator can throw a little curveball into the game plan in such a way where it could. Maybe put Josh Allen in a vulnerable spot, at least the Patriots are gonna have to figure out what day ball is trying to do with Josh Allen. Yeah, but I think to me, Brian davell, the offensive coordinator of the bills, who used to be an assistant here. Of course, everybody knows that. I think he's been one of the biggest factors in how the bills have played successfully played the Patriots the last couple of years, winning three of four. His work with Josh Allen speaks for itself. I do not think that Josh Allen would have been the same quarterback or had the rise that he has with a different type of coordinator. I think Dave all has he sets Josh Allen up for success. And I thought in the last matchup, and you often see this with former patriots assistants, they have a good idea of, hey, this is what bills tell them the guys in the meetings. This is what they're going to try to do. Josh, this is what they're going to try to do to you. So that is going on and I thought Brian davell basically anticipated every counter punch that the Patriots were going to have in that game and he had an answer. As far as the curve ball, I think it's up to the Patriots to throw.

"Greg, we're going to start with the bills and we'll move forward, talk a little Jags or whatever. I don't think there's much of a preview here to be had. It's really what we've seen not just against buffalo. But the last two weeks it has patriots fans kind of questioning the teams identity. It's amazing two weeks ago, we were a book and tickets for a Brady versus Belichick Super Bowl. And now everyone's like, okay, hey, it was a good season anyway. There'll be one and done in the playoffs if they get there. So it's amazing the roller coaster we've gone on. But I think everybody's freaked out over what we saw both from an effort and execution standpoint the last two weeks. You know, going down big to indie early and then just basically doing nothing right against buffalo early in that game as well. You've looked at the film, you know, a zillion times by now. What's the most? What struck you the most here and what jumped out? And again, to me, it's really more how they came out as much as, you know, what they did during the game. Yeah. I mean, I think the most disturbing thing was just the collective lack of punch pack in this game to start a game again. Okay, you could somewhat excuse the colts game. Coming off a bi even though the culture coming off a buy. But the first time the Patriots had really been in that sort of environment and basically two years, like a guy like Kyle duggar had never played in a place like that where partisan for the home team and indoors and the games going away from me, you falling behind 24 to zero. But at least they showed fight, they came back, they made it a game at the end. And you were like, okay, it's a one off, the Patriots are going to understand that now they have no margin for error. Now the buffalo game is now the de facto AFC east championship. And so you figured they would come out and be ready to go. And instead, it was a continuation of the colts game. I mean to fall behind a collective 44 to 7 in those two games or two most important games of the season, really, with you know exactly what's on the line. Basically anything is in your control and for them to fall behind like that in the first half of both games is just hugely disappointing. It's hugely puzzling and that goes.

"Season, that's just gonna be really disappointing as fans. It's gonna be a bummer. Yeah, I'm with you. I think we're at the point in time now where it's probably smarter, especially with these highly trained, highly conditioned athletes to start treating symptoms more than treating positives, right, where more concern about is he actually sick and I'm not saying to throw a player out there. What I'm saying is is that if a player feels that he's not in a 100% and he's feeling some of the effects of COVID-19, then he doesn't play. If he feels perfectly fine and he feels fit to play, then he should be allowed if he's vaccinated. Then he should be able to play. And the CDC came out today and said that now they feel like a 5 day quarantine is sufficient for COVID. So some of these guys that test positive on Monday talking about playing on Sunday, that's CDC guidelines are saying those guys should be able to. That's what I'm saying. Let's just catch up. Again, so I don't know scientifically how all this works. I will admit that I'm smart enough to admit, I'm not smart enough, but if the CDC is dropping like if we're using protocol if there's one thing we all know about the pandemic in this virus, it's that it's basically different every week every two weeks. You have to keep updating. We shouldn't be using protocols in December that were put together in August. Yeah. That just doesn't have a problem but as you said it involves constantly on the fly all right. That's enough about COVID. It depresses me and I think we are at a point though where we know enough about the virus that you should be able to manage it somewhat in terms of is this guy asymptomatic? Is this guy not? Is this guy fit to play? Is he not? They should be able to determine that pretty easily. And before we wrap this up though, Alex, I really want to thank a big, strong contingent of Buffalo Bills fans watching the show in the chat today. I know they came in here just to talk some smack, but our sponsors are loving the numbers that we're getting right now because of you guys. So we really appreciate it. "To develop? I just don't think well, that's the other thing. So I'm glad you brought that up because so just real quick for my point of view before you get because I have my point of view and then you have the right answer. Yes. I think that I don't think Josh McDaniels had a feel for what the Patriots offensive line was doing in that game or what the bills pass versus doing in that game. Because he's calling plays that needed time to develop in that time just wasn't there. And that's not on Mac that's not on the receivers. You just, I think that's the thing where and again, this is a theme of the whole game. I think the Patriots coaches never picked up on the flow on the tempo on the mood, whatever you want to call it. They never picked up on what was happening on the field. This is what, and this is what I criticized the bills for immensely after week 13. And I'll bring it back and say the Patriots did it. The Patriots did what they wanted to do. They put their head down, they put the blinders on they closed their eyes, la la la la la, they did what they wanted to do. They didn't allow the game to dictate any of their decisions. And that's bad coaching. It's bad coaching. And this is another example. Yeah, so your point about Magnum getting rid of the football. I think one of the most interesting statistics that I've seen, not getting rid of the football, I'm saying they were calling plays where he had to hold the ball too. Okay, yeah. Either way, right? Maybe a little bit, yes. I understand where you're coming from. Yeah. So just in general, whether it was scheme related play calling related or Mac related and receiver related, Matt Jones over the last two weeks, his average time to throw Alex has been 3.1.

"And we talked about after that last game, how much better the Patriots adjusted to the weather. And again, it's not 50 mile an hour winds, but there still is going to be weather to adjust to and we know the Patriots have the advantage there. Back to the original question, you know, how worried am I that the bills are able to move the ball a little bit more? I go back to what I said before that week 13 game. It all comes down to patriots core first for me. I think because first off, I think the bills are, I think the bills took that loss very personally. And that's a double edged sword. So, you know, on one hand and Patrice players have talked us up a week. Like they're coming in with the purpose. They're coming in. They know exactly how close that last game was. They know that that necessarily was a true reflection of them as a team the bills. And they're coming with the purpose. The other side of that is, are they going to be two gassed up? Are they going to try to prove things they don't need to prove? If the Patriots get up early and really put the pressure on them and I don't remember if I talked about this on Tuesday or if I talked about it on the sports of at some point, but basically all the pressures on the bills in this game. Going in before anything starts. All the pressures on the bills, if you score first, they might get really sloppy because the bills as we've seen are not built to play from behind. So the other, you know, the other side of that is if you let them get comfortable, well now there's no other element that can snap them out of the game when they start to get in a rhythm. So I think the weather element or the lack thereof, everything in this game is just compounded by who scores first. I think that's all that's what this game entirely comes down to is who scores first, you know, maybe if there's a field goal, we'll call it the first touchdown. But I both of these teams are built to play from ahead and I think all these little elements can be used to either team's advantage if they get a head like they want. I know that's a total cop out answer, but I think it's kind of where I wanted to go with it honestly is because something that I've been working on and pulling stats for today is the idea that the Patriots identity is to win in the trenches, right?.

"A third string quarterback, I mean, it's amazing that they've even won a game. I think they won the first game of the year, was that what they did? They beat a Jacksonville. When they played Jacksonville to beat Jacksonville I don't remember. First game of the year, the Texans got 37 points to 21. Taylor was playing that game. Taylor retailer. Taylor got hurt the second game of the season and their collapse has gone ever since they scored 37, 21 points, and they went to 9 zero the collapse. 5 points, three points. Should be an easy win for us. We're going to win. I think we're going to put this one on this one behind this. But after that gets a lot worse, though, we go ravens that's going to be a tough season, you know, all the way through. You know? So I know, Scottie, we gotta hang in there, let's hope the dolphins do turn this thing around and we can look forward to getting a new coaching staff here soon and a new GM. And by the way, we got to touch this before we close up. Any trades before the end, I mean, there was a blockbuster trade done today. Oh yeah, von Miller. Miller. But you went to the rams for two 1022 draft picks. I think it was a second round. Yeah. Yeah. It is my hope that mister Steven Ross has put a moratorium or an approval process on any trades. Because the plan is already in action to replace the front office. And so you don't want the current front office damaging the future front office. Which isn't to say that if something makes sense, you don't pull the trigger. In the end, no, I don't think we're going to do any trades. I think if there is a trade, it will be it'll be Parker. Because he's very easily the highest asset. If people are out there and they're offering something crazy for it, I think there's a team. There's a team called Atlanta that makes a lot of sense for them to pull the so if I'm looking I'm looking at Atlanta, but that's about it. Yeah. Well, I just, you know, even if we got a gold mine in picks for him, which is not going to happen. This front office has already proven that they can't make a pick to save their families lives. So I don't want the picks made by grier or anybody.

When we did our overview with the fin fans, but certainly both of us are of the opinion that we're managed by clowns and we're coached by clowns at this point, because every week we see just plays that are either called in horrible situations or executed so badly that they haven't been practiced enough. Whatever is just really boneheaded things, and this is yet another one of the worst bone headed plays, you want to start with the one that won, and then talk about the runners. Oh, no, let me give you the two runner up. Okay. The first one is Williams and red wine for being inactive, not allowed to travel for the team with the team for some whatever. It seems like you could deal with a different way. At just amazing, it's just a take away the potential opportunity for them to get just how juvenile what I would have done mistake they must have made. You know, I mean, again, it's showing lack of focus and that doesn't happen in good teams. It just doesn't. I'll take the next one. Let me take that. Because I woke up writing this one in my head and thought about it last night and had it all prepared and said, you know, no one else is gonna have this take. And then I saw somebody quote and Jason Taylor about having this take already. So the game is over. We have the ball and in the situation where you've got no chance to win whatever, just a few seconds left, no timeouts. We throw a screen pass to gaskin behind the line of scrimmage. And he gets blown up. Now, in every other game in every other situation, I find coaching it or if Don Shu is coaching it or any knowledgeable respectful whatever person they're either just going to hand the ball off to run up the middle to eat the clock. Or they're going to take a knee. Yeah, get out of there. Get out of there. Yeah. There's no football play that you can score whatever we do. With three scores, 17, 18 points. Right. So why are you putting players at risk by calling something absolutely asinine retarded? Put whatever insult you want to put on a clown show, clown show. So, terrible, terrible, terrible. You know, we have clowns. We have firing offenses, put on the field every week. It seems like. Well, you can introduce the winning. Well, this is the winner and it actually, as it was unfolding, it had that element of Keystone cops, you know, like, you know it was going to make one of those NFL films, the follies, the, you know, this is the worst play. This is this team is so bad they can't snap the ball. Well, it was what 20 7 seconds left in the first half. We have the ball the 12 yard line. We have one timeout left. And is going nuts because everybody's lined up and correctly waddle is, and the whole confusion, he didn't want to get an illegal motion. Because he had to go in motion obviously. Finally, they do get settled and he does go in motion and of course the boss snapped hits him as fumble recovered by buffalo end of the game, more end of the half, but I thought more importantly end of the game because we knew every dolphin fan that that just symbolized our season or finding a way to lose. Our game and again, you know, just a total minimum wage to go to the half up 6 three. Dolphin clowning. Ideally, we would have gone up ten, three. The big top just came up and that's what happened in that. And that play just a civilized area to me the game was over and we were tied. So it's kind of double whammy coaching one for not having people in the right place, understanding what they're going to run, right? Two leadership on tua, big time on tour for not getting people in alignment quicker? We're not calling the damn timeout. We had a timeout left. 27 seconds at the 12 yard line sky. So two people can call time out, right? The quarterback quarterback and the head coach. When flow, who's supposed to be managing the game looks up, sees this happening, sees where the play cock is, he could have stepped on the field and he sees this clown show going on. He should be saying, please. We have time out. Let me ask you this. Let's talk about game management again. Okay, I'm sure he wants to save the timeout, right? He wanted to. But he's seeing things unfolding and going back. There's 27 seconds. You can either tight end, man. You could even complete a pass and kill the I mean, there's time left on the clock. Why on earth did they just call the timeout? And you could then you could run your play. Yeah. It's not a big deal. There's 27 seconds at the 12 yard line of buffalo. There was so much time left and that play just, you know, just symbolize everything. The whole season wrapped up right there. Right there. And when that happened, I think all of us were like, I was demoralized. Yeah. Every dolphin fan is hanging their heads. There we go. The TV spill on their beer. Yeah, putting their hands up. You know, behind their head or what is it you said during the last podcast? I couldn't find the bag to put over my head fast enough. Still laughing at that one. It was I forget the bag, man. I was just comatose. I just sat there on my couch looking at the TV going like what the hell just happened? So that's our winner. Uncomfortably numb. So coming out of the half. Oh, this was great. We started right where we left off, man. The team was in total disarray again. Yeah. It was Miami ends the half confused on offense and comes out in the second half still confused. Again, coaching baby. I mean, don't know where to win up or go. Players were like, what the hell's going gets? He's going nuts again. It just, it was like the Keystone cops and we could have given two winners almost on that. Unbelievable. So it was a bunch of three and outs, you know? My defense was still bawling out at this point. I mean, you know, bill's got the ball and we forced them to three and frequently applying pressure. Not quite getting them, not taking them down, but at least getting his face getting.

Don't really wanna put the window. Best regular season record actually think is really in play for this team and you see something like eight to one zero nine. Two ones are available. In a bunch of places i think rivers says the market at like five fifty or sixty one so you know shop around but whatever the best number you can get is whether it's bet rivers or elsewhere like bills to have the best record i think would be the one bet worth for me with this team okay. It's interesting stuff there. You better you've becky well. Nick hostels kim barclay. Today's we talk about two to. Nfl teams each day talking about the buffalo bills. Right now i wanna talk about two vets. The bills this year number one week. One pittsburgh steelers buffalo's seven point favorite. Maybe buffalo doesn't move seven and a half maybe tampa doesn't move the seven and a half. How does it tampa buff. I'm sure there's an answer to this question. And it's going to be horrifying. But how does it tampa buffalo week. One teaser lose. I like buffalo in the seven against pittsburgh in week one. I know it feels like a big number. I'm down on pittsburgh. i'm high on buffalo. i feel like. I have to lay that number with the bills and week one. I reserve the right to change my mind as we lead up to week. One but right. Now that's what i'm looking at another one can the aforementioned gregory russo. There's a philosopher. Joe to be made here. I can't think of it off the top of my head road gregory russo..

It's goddamn face that he's gonna fumble it to the richard seymour break so good see sheldon whatever his name was that took that punt kick off at the end zone them formula liotta calvin lee. Yeah it's just such a bills way to lose tells you if anybody has any bills fans in their famous football league and make them listen to every single bills episode because then reliving this is just a you know what that might actually be a good like Come in last place in fantasy. Football yeah like punishment is still have non pages fans. Listen to this listening to the games. Do we should skip every game. That the bills went. Yeah we're only missing a couple Do you know how many that is. Actually down one it's three with brady overall. The bills have won five games out of forty man. In fact if you saw the you can do on the new patriots. Stein's website pastimes dynasty dot com. But if you sort the patriots record versus opponents by win percentage you have the falcons. The cowboys paged undefeated. One hundred percent win percentage. They're eight one against the jaguars which is eighty nine. They're six one against the rams and raiders. Which is eight fifty seven but between the jaguars and the rams so basically what would account to like a seven. One record. is the pages record against the bills. Which is thirty five and five so they have a seven one record against the bills five times and this is just tom brady or what we know. This is just overall tom brady. I think is Have that to give me one and one of those. Tom brady. losses against the bills is a week. Seventeen game where he plays. The first happened sits..
