"We played a couple seeds and one in the USFL one with Tampa. He 60 playing with Tampa. No, we're the point where they're told him. This future would be in Tampa forever and venue Tester Verdy is their target. They want him this a quarterback, So we went to Tampa and said, Look, Um you told us would be forever. We're not just being traded where you want to go where you want to send them. Wolf figure out the trade ourselves. And he felt that there was something so inherently great about. Well, first of all, Bill Walsh told us Joe Montana was going to retire because in fact was so bad. Um That really worked out. Well, you know, I've lived in the bear. I'm living in Berkeley. I never ever ever would have wanted someone to follow Joe Montana and do with them. I knew he was tonight on So, um, we thought well, Montana actually has to retire, but long story short. Uh, so it was being in that system, so we're sort of Ranger trade. And San Francisco paid a lot of money, but they didn't have to give up a lot because we didn't want to cripple the team uses going to and then we assumed he would start from the start. And then, uh, Law school. Yeah, he had to find various things to occupy a sign because His presence made Montana the most competitive he's ever been, and he had great years on Al Davis. I loved Al Davis. Um, I had a house in Berkeley and he used to call me like I could tell what time it is because the camp a neatly by the campus, bring the time he got off on the swallow fart and then one apartment to apartment. Most of the discussion would be about world history politics, and he had read a lot of history and He was very focused, and we would talk about politics and books and culture and everyone so all about football, but he had It's incredible ability to pick up information. Because he was constantly on the phone, so he was better informed about everything happening about in the league and everything happening on every team. Then you could believe Did you ever have to negotiate with him? Mia. Darrell Russell, Right, Your hamburgers. Yeah, That's right. No, that was Bruce Allen and lets the Desmond Howard No. That was probably Bruce. Helen to, um hurt Marsh. No, they had negotiators. So What I thought Woz. This is crazy to have agents versus teams when we're really together. Have one God, which is built the brand and drive revenue into the sport, so we shouldn't be having ugly negotiations. I should help owners figure out how to use the Internet. How to do an NFL network had to get a big TV contract, and that was my focus. So when I would Come to somebody like Al, I would almost speak as if I was his agent for or adviser because the better teams did that Doesn't leak did the better football dead? The better my players would do. Another player. He got a contract with and it was pretty painless. You know where the negotiation with the 40 Niners? I don't know. Peroxide that or not, but Jeff Wilson Jr and just what do you know what a young man he is getting to know him the last couple of years. Les and he battled in all that ankle injury was stubborn to heal this year, but he ran for 600 yards the lead the 40 Niners. He scored 10 touchdowns. He's obviously been strong, but I think his future is even brighter. Tell me about your relationship with Jeff Wilson Jr. Well, he's great. Last year At this time, I went to Jeff Wilson Junior day in his hometown, which is sort of like an East Texas. And if you've never had an experience like that they do a parade. The whole town comes out is smaller town. But you saw how loved he was by so many people. He's genuinely warm person with the charitable heart and Remember, we were trying to figure out where to sign into the one drafted and when the 40 Niners called, I said, um, I need to talk to John Lynch. You represent, but it's right. And so I knew he would When you're.

Had you not had the tutelage of of a Bill Walsh, Who knows what direction you're your career, my go. What? No question about that. And you know, there was an article a couple years ago. Besides, you know Plunkett, Manning and Pastorini. You know Lynn Dickey won the third round. I want Joe thighs. No, I think what the fourth or seventh round something like that and not 100 from Alabama, one in that draft and They're doing an article about that drafted and Jim Plunkett said, You know, of all the guys. Kenny was the luckiest. He got to go to a stable franchise with Paul Brown and Bill Walsh. And certainly that was correct. Excellent. This was fun. I thought this was a blast. It Took 10 minutes and then you know, he didn't say I'll pay What Kenny? In those days it was the 40 man roster. The only carried two quarterbacks, he said. If you make the 40 Man roster, I'll give you the extra 2500. No. That is excellent. Oh, that is very cool. Hey, I'm glad you made time. Great hearing your voice. "Other. But yet this group of coaches Sean McVey and Kyle Shanahan have so much lineage to the 40 Niner team that it makes for a very interesting matchup. Of course, Shawn McVeigh's grandfather. Was. John Biggs is the general manager when Bill Walsh had those great teams and, of course college. Shanahan's dad, Mike Shanahan was an assistant on that under Bill Walsh, and with that coach's treat continued on when they work together in Washington. So you have Ah, great knowledge of everyone together. Well, the 40 Niners are coming off a bye week and they're banged up. They've had a lot of injuries during the course of a year. And the last time these two teams met was October 18th. The 40 Niners were healthier. They won 24 16 over the Rams and Kyle Shanahan has won three in a row over his protege, Sean McVeigh. But the rains are coming off a big Monday night football win in Tampa, and they're at seven and three. The 40 Niners are coming off a bye week. They're foreign six and you're struggling Injury wise for the Rams Left tackle Andrew Whitworth is out for the year and Joe Note room. The third year offsets of tackle from TCU will be protecting The blind side of Jared Goff. They've had some struggles place kicking. They have their third place kicker in the remember, Um Greg Zuerlein was allowed to go to Dallas and The Rams went with early rookie kicker who that released and now they're with Matt Gay, So they're still untested in that place Kicking situation. The Niners will start Nick Mullins it quarterback. He wears Jersey number four from Southern Mississippi and his fist started. Oh, yeah? His favorite player Growing up. Brett Farve also played at Southern Miss. Um, War number four. So you've got the Rams with a great offense and Darryl Henderson and Cooper Cup Have really been outstanding for golf when he gets off on the right start defensively. Aaron Donald with nine sacks is a force to be reckoned with, and they have a new showcase corner. And that's Darius Williams. Yes, four interceptions on the air. So on a day in Southern California, where this would be an absolute sell out, it's going to be played before an empty crowd. It's so five stadium All right, a couple of division rivals getting at it and just a little while Chuck will talk to you it within the hour. K's in L, A one of three.

"You know, you you played with many people have compared Brady and Montana through the years because Steve is a little bit more of a runner initially. But he became a great pocket thrower the lefty. He reminds me a little Russell Wilson. He came into the league is a runner developed into a really really good passer. But when you see Bray. Brady, we always about how much pre snap. How he changes the call at the line of scrimmage. Let's go back to Joe Montana was Joe did he just take Bill Walsh's call or did Joe like to audible a lot too? Well, Joe was the same way he was in control on the football field. If if he saw defense and he needed to audible out he knew he had two players on outside to do that. And as a receiver for me, you know, I would come to the line line strimmers, and I was just like a quarterback on the football field. I would see something. And I knew exactly what I had to do on that particular play. So you know, you can see similarities between Joe Montana and also Tom Brady, what do you make of the emergence of the Julian Edelman the slot receive it used to be Jerry that you know, the outside guy was the home run hitter. Well now quickness means as much as speed because of slot receivers. Do you think your career would be different you? Nobody Cornerbacks couldn't touch Jerry Rice. They used to be able to you could go slaughter outside. What do you make of the emergence of the wide receiver position? Well, actually, that's what I did. I play slot also played outside and I think with the run pass option. Now, he's a totally different ballgame. You got to start looking at these slot receivers. Now and say that these guys are putting up numbers where maybe you have to look at them for the pro football hall of fame. Yeah. You look at element. You look at Welker. You look at Amadullah all these guys. So yeah, you know, I moved all over to football feel and I was able to have a guy on opposite side to complement me the patients, they talk they talk about not having that go-to guy element is that go-to guy. And if you play him five yards off, he's gone. A you know, he's going to be able to defeat you. And also catch the ball in keep the chains move. It New England's been to a lot of these the Rams haven't did you feel in your second and third Super Bowl. It was an advantage having been in. In this game. No, not at all. Not at all. If you get to the Super Bowl you deserve to be here. You know? And I like the reference this, you know, sometimes you got to be able to slay the dragon. And we know that what the patriots. They have a lot of guys on that team that got the experience in the ramps. They don't have that many guys is going to be up to Donald also sue to try to get to Brady, and he's going to be up to that secondary to try to stop gronk, and and also element by the way. Maybe it's a silly question. But I'm watching all your highlights. Here you ever see your highlights, you're sitting home on TV and you watch the highlights and you think yourself damn I was good. I was really really good. No, no. I look at myself. And I think I can always do something better. And I think that's the reason why I never got complacent. I continue to work. I wanted to be like the most condition after. Wait till have played a game. And I wanted to start the game and finish the game the same way. And I think that's why I played if over twenty years I've seen your stats, Jerry. I'm not sure you could have been better, you're big. You're very you're very humble, man. By the way, on behalf a Hennessy's the world's preferred cognac, including Jerry's favourite Hennessy x oh, the world's first extra old cognac toast with your friends this Sunday there. Steve Young Joe Montana, and Larry FitzGerald has spent way too many years catching passes from Gibran as with other Bruny's calling the plays yell at part of me was. To take written on that. I mean, he is so embedded in the community in Arizona. He's he's the most famous player ever from that franchise. And so I get maybe why go somewhere else for that one year that maybe if you're not the best receiver is a forgotten your somewhere else. But why I feel just depressed that he won't have a chance to chase a title with a contender one sees his. I know I know and he chose not to that as an institution. Then let's move on Alex Smith spotted at an NBA game. The wizards I believe he was checking out a wizards game. And he went down to the locker room, and as as you would imagine reporters down there stepping photos, and he had a northerly leg brace. One of those freaky ones where the wires are going into the leg. And it just. Medieval, it's like the worst thing you'd want to have on your leg. I mean, the farthest thing from an evil because it's like, the height of modern, medical technology. But yes, that's the height. Zane like decades, I did some research on this. They've been using whatever this thing is where they they connect the bone because they had the infection. So they had to take out the internal rod and that put on this medieval device that they haven't changed the technology of it in decades. Why just argue I know nothing about the technology itself. But I read about Dr Chow to say that it's, you know, twenty years older, nineteen years old still does not tug us back to medieval times Technic figures being okay? Anyway, long story short. Now, I think let's keep going with. That was good long story. Short. Alex Smith is not out of the woods by any stretch. In terms of surgery and rehab and Bruce L Redskins GM a day after Smith was spotted. Could only offer this at the senior bowl during a practice in mobile, Alabama. He's moving around and well on his way to recovery. It's a tough thing for him and his family all the love and care has helped him quite a bit. We'll see how it goes. We're optimistic if anyone could come back. It's alex. I'm sure he wanted to shoot hoops at the game yesterday. But we'll see his contract is guaranteed for this year. So the Redskins have every motivation to try to help him along in his recovery. But by the terms of the contract they actually have to guarantee his next couple years by March. I would think they'll be able to work something out with the agent to put that date off you would hope or else they're in the spot where they kind of need to cut him because regardless they can't really go into the season with him as their starter. They can't be county on that in April or may Colt. Mccoy's also free agent. I don't know if they really want Colt McCoy to be their starter. So I mean, they are a team if Nick foles was available or teddy Bridgewater, whoever Joe flacco, I don't know that you would. They're going to be one of those teams at the top of the list going for these guys..

"They were very chilly. Relationship and he had quite a rivalry with with Bill Walsh with the forty Niners. Same thing. They're pretty chilly. Very quick handshakes at the end of games. And I've always wondered about your relationship with Bill Belichick. You guys were the. You know in the patriots time of greatness, the one team that was the consistent longest burn their saddle was the Indianapolis Colts with Tony dungee and Peyton Manning. So what was your relationship like then? And what is it like now, you know, it's funny. Bill up play six months, but the giant and Bill watts was Bella check was the special teams coach. So he coached me for six months, and then you know, we coached against each other for nine ten eleven years. The relationship on the field and during the competition. It was the Is whole thing. trying to beat them him trying to be a but the times when we would sit together at the league meeting, you know, he would come over. We'd discuss things we talk. It was very friendly. Very, you know, upbeat when my son died Bill sent me a note handwritten, you know, and it was one of the first ones to come. So that's the side that people don't see and they don't focus on. But no, it was I'm not gonna say it was buddy, buddy. Because it certainly wasn't. But it was Mitchell respect and a lot of fun when we were off the field. What about now, do you have much of a relationship with them at all I through? I don't see him very often. I have gotten to know him a little bit better through Rodney. And when we've done things when we've covered them it. It's always been good. But I I just don't see him that much nowadays. Yeah. It's Jerry think you'd see a. Team make the Super Bowl nine times in eighteen years out what they've done has been phenomenal. And of course, they've had the good fortune to have and Tom Brady healthy for a long time. But coach spell check. And you look different staff and probably offense of corn as permanent defensive coordinator and different some Clair's come through there. And the thing that I admire watts own Brennaman ruler. Again, they don't beat themselves. They had a tough game in in Kansas City and things especially in the fourth quarter weren't necessarily going great. But when when it comes time to execute they're going to play their best game you have to be on your best game. And you can't make the mistakes that that will lose the game. And they'd just they're so well coast this one it's great to watch. But what they've done is. Unbelievable. I I was I was really young for when the Yankees were you know, that dominant. But I haven't seen anything like that in sports and the other for that. I can think of. Tony Dungy hall of fame. Football coach has a book out this week. It's called the soul of team. It's written with Nathan Whitaker. Tindale house publishers Tony has gotten to number one on the bestseller list. Which Tony I'll tell you this. I think it's harder to get to number one on the bestseller lists than it is to get the canton, Ohio. So anyway, I applaud you I applaud you for for both things and for being always so good to me over the years. And I really appreciate your time today. And I wish you all the best with the soul of a team. Thank you, very much all be with you.

"Well, I think gossip is very much a, and this is not in negative term because I think this is what coaches should do. I think office very much a programmed player. I think that when their offense works functionally ineffectively in all its dimensions. And he drops back and is relatively secure in the pocket that he throws a beautiful ball. He's an easy thrower. He's a comfortable throw or has a good arm for the most part. He's an accurate thrower. He lost some of his accuracy down the stretch. But when he's a comfortable player within the context of a multi dimensional offense. He's very pretty to watch the ball comes out. Really, well, and offenses line is healthy isn't as good as any offense. Line left in the playoffs. Well, the one thing that has been talked about all year. I remember we talked about with the eagles year ago is all five starters played all sixteen games. And I think that when you get to this point the season, that's really important. It's not likely you'll have errors in in cohesion, and those kinds of things where there's assignment mistakes based on a lack of understanding of what you're trying to get done. So I think that's really important going forward, by the way, Sean McVay, and Sean Payton or considered very smart play designers, very clever offense of coaches, so people can kind of lump them together. Do you see similarities are they December? Sometimes well, I think in their general approach dissimilar because I think that Sean Payton is very much built on multiple of personnel packages. Multiple formation looks Sean McVeigh doesn't do much of that at all they line up in what we call eleven personnel with three wide receivers on probably ninety five percent of their snacks. And they're not that multiple with their formation. Looks in fact in the week nine game they lined up in eleven personnel on every single snap and the saints defense lined up in nickel on every single. So now, here's a perfect example. Where teams have done things like this and it hasn't worked. And then people say, oh, you can't play like that. You're not creative. But for the Rams it works. Yeah. Some player that played against Bill Walsh in the Niners twenty years ago told me he said the Niners ran twelve plays. They had thirty different looks. He goes, they only ran twelve plays. You know? And then I had a player that played with Sam Weiss is that we have sixteen hundred plays. We just didn't do any of them. Well, I've always thought the number of plays is overblown you have to disguise looks. But do what you do well in life and in football. Yeah. And the Rams are what they're trying to do with all that shit motion. And the things that they do even just with your base outside zone run. Look is they're just trying to cause misreads based on how people have to react to what they're doing. You know, they're not fancy they're not multiple in the way, people think multiple, but they're just trying to cause defenders is not to be in the right place. And then that causes them to be beat late in their reactions. Let's shift to the AFC good stuff dry Cosell. Joining us. So patriots are ten ino- this year when they rushed for a hundred yards. They use. They're running backs as receivers very effectively Sony. Michelle is now healthy is very small, but nimble clever runner he can go outside or inside the tackles. So when you look at their running game whether Teno and they get one hundred yards and Kansas City is run defense. What is the film say? Well, I think that the patriots run game is they run different concepts, depending on the personnel. That are on the field. They run certain concept when they have twenty one personnel meeting the fullback Devlin is on the field, and they run other concepts when they're an eleven personnel with rewired receivers with Sony, Michelle. So you know, it depends what the look is. And the chief I think well line up with their personnel accordingly. My guess is they'll play their base defense against twenty one personnel. And they'll be a nickel versus the eleven personnel. And you'll see different formations one of the things. The patriots have always done common. Almost better than anybody over these last five six seven years is when they have base personnel on the field..

"The innovator of the west coast offense. So all those guys in the nineties ended up getting jobs granted read Gruden whatever. These guys even later on even after that mardi morning. Wag is on that tree. Right. Like all those guys got gigs. That's the last time. I can think of that. Because not all of those guys were play callers either. But again, you're saying okay, Bill Walsh is on the mount Rushmore, potentially of NFL coaches, Sean as thirty two years old, and this is happening and how many camps does he won not one yet? This goes back to we're talking with Mason. I if they it's the Rams would lose Ramona all my God. This is all these coaching hires. I mean, the teams are going to revolt the fan bases. It's going to be in Saint. But, but I think it's it's less like it's less about McVeigh and more about the fact that so many of these guys are skipping so many steps, right? It's that you're right. One hundred percent, right. They're skipping steps. But the turnover the NFL is so much. It doesn't really matter next year. It'll be somebody else who they're trying to copy next year. I mean Steve woke just got the job. Right. I mean, how long like everyone you get it for like one or two years. Like most of the franchise that are hiring and hiring coaches this year. Those guys were only in those jobs for a little while Mike McCarthy's, probably the exception. But when Taylor's case Cincinnati won't fire coach, they get more forever. So that Taylor maybe this. Sign met leflore to a four year contract. I mean, you're right. Like this. The trends will change things will happen. But some of these teams are making some very high risk. In other words, there's a reason why they continue to be in the position. Because continue to hire. Whatever the trendy pick is at that time. And if you're just hiring the trend, I mean, sometimes you get lucky and you end up with Sean McVay are you end up with Frank Reich. Right. Like, sometimes you get sometimes that works out. Really? Well, and other times you just cut bait and change things up. I mean is there is gonna go with Cuyler Murray is the number one overall after taking last year, we'll get to that business. But the the blasphemous thing that means said was that McVeigh would lose this weekend. There's no chance venuses using. Okay. You buttering me up. Your just you're welcome show. I think he's gonna I think they're gonna chance they leave you. I think they'll win. But there's it's not this is this to me. And I can't the city is another upset kind of alert. Yeah. Although it's supposed to snow. I don't know. Maybe that'll be good. But that there's douse the scary. They have a number five rush defense. I think like it's kinda even better in after contact raise in Gurley. I saw video of him lately. Jogging yesterday play in a couple of weeks. I think Todd Gurley affected overweighted. We saw what CJ in his efforts to me. The reason what yes they have an excellent run defense. And we saw that and Seattle it helped Seattle didn't throw the ball. Not that. Hurt angry about that. Still the reason I picked the Rams is I think McVeigh's going to make the necessary judgments against Dallas defense. That's very good. But does have weaknesses. I don't think he's going to run into a brick wall. Their past defenses. Worse. The run mentioned the run defenses fit the past defenses sixteenth. Okay. Byron Jones has been phenomenal. But outside of him. There's a lot of softness in that secondary. And I have confidence the Jared Goff can be the Jared Goff. We saw at the beginning of the season. I think the line is. Like what gives you this confidence? The last couple of games. The the ramp. They did really look a lot better on offense at the end of the season granted against inferior opponents. It's an NFL the Niners beat Seattle. But, but you know, the Rams kind of lost their way in the middle of the season..
