"And he said to me, because they don't want to go to work. And I think there's an aspect of that to you. They're afraid to go to work and be like everybody else. You know, get up at six o'clock and brush, your teeth shower, and get the car drive the wherever you drive doing work for eight nine ten twelve hours drive home, and nobody gives you any fanfare this, this job is his unique. No people don't other than goose. Nobody. Cheers, the rest of us. You know, we do our job we go. In case if they're still fuel tank fire in the belly. I'd say play you saw the playoffs. There are still some plays in his body. He'll always be able to walk. But when your body tells you, it's time, then you leave your body is told him, it's time. And I'm sure when it does. I'm not sure he'll listen. Yeah. No, I agree with every member. When I was in the forty Niners Bill Walsh pulled me aside. Jerry Rice is we're going to let him go pretty soon. And he goes. No. And he said these guys don't understand when it's time to go, they really don't. You have to tell them and he said, Jerry, take a bunch of clydesdales to pull him off the field. And as it turns out that was kind of what happened because then he went to Oakland, and they went to Denver and Seattle whatever. But he's around forever. And now he was productive receiver, but he wasn't Jerry Rice at the forty Niners new, but Ron, if you had to council gronk, what would you tell you say go on with grog, I would just say, I would give him the fall. I've given dial phone for him. And I would say, I want you to talk to my dear friend Martha viral. Yeah. Talk to him, who is just had his shoulder replaced. He's been a lot of pain with that. He's going to have his knee replaced in June is you have his hand worked on at some point in time. He told me a story about when he was playing there were operating on his back. And when they get done, they just flip them over and said we may Fisher foot. Two. And he's fifty three years old. And he's looking at the possibility of never be able to hit a golf ball, which is one of the things he likes a lot. And if you play the style, the ground place or if you which is similar to the style of Mark plate, you're going to pay a price for that. And you should talk to somebody who's paying it. So, you know, before that Bill comes due. What these decisions to keep going guys had four back operations run. Let me ask you this. Do you think lavar would've traded his football career for good health at his age? Right. No, no, no, no questions goes, you would not. I mean he complains about nothing. He doesn't complain about these plays about. Yeah. We got the logic that he can't sit down against anti complain about that. But he doesn't blame football right? If you had to council Brady, he's only twelve years younger than Bavaro, if you had council him. What would you tell him tell him EIB it'd be very, very, very, very careful here because the ice is getting thinner and thinner. When that when the football guys bring that cartoon down on you it can often come down hard and fast, and it hurts when it lands. You know you go talk to Brett farve today or Peyton Manning. And was it really worth five case? For example, the play one more year after that NFC champ. She came. No. It was not, you know, probably too late at that point. But Tom to be careful because you're right. You only takes shot change your life. Yeah. I don't need to talk to those guys that cover the forty Niners in the nineties, and they won the ninety four Super Bowl, Steve yawn. And they always a playoff threat through nineties. But then, of course ninety ninety came and Steve had multiple concussions..

"They were very chilly. Relationship and he had quite a rivalry with with Bill Walsh with the forty Niners. Same thing. They're pretty chilly. Very quick handshakes at the end of games. And I've always wondered about your relationship with Bill Belichick. You guys were the. You know in the patriots time of greatness, the one team that was the consistent longest burn their saddle was the Indianapolis Colts with Tony dungee and Peyton Manning. So what was your relationship like then? And what is it like now, you know, it's funny. Bill up play six months, but the giant and Bill watts was Bella check was the special teams coach. So he coached me for six months, and then you know, we coached against each other for nine ten eleven years. The relationship on the field and during the competition. It was the Is whole thing. trying to beat them him trying to be a but the times when we would sit together at the league meeting, you know, he would come over. We'd discuss things we talk. It was very friendly. Very, you know, upbeat when my son died Bill sent me a note handwritten, you know, and it was one of the first ones to come. So that's the side that people don't see and they don't focus on. But no, it was I'm not gonna say it was buddy, buddy. Because it certainly wasn't. But it was Mitchell respect and a lot of fun when we were off the field. What about now, do you have much of a relationship with them at all I through? I don't see him very often. I have gotten to know him a little bit better through Rodney. And when we've done things when we've covered them it. It's always been good. But I I just don't see him that much nowadays. Yeah. It's Jerry think you'd see a. Team make the Super Bowl nine times in eighteen years out what they've done has been phenomenal. And of course, they've had the good fortune to have and Tom Brady healthy for a long time. But coach spell check. And you look different staff and probably offense of corn as permanent defensive coordinator and different some Clair's come through there. And the thing that I admire watts own Brennaman ruler. Again, they don't beat themselves. They had a tough game in in Kansas City and things especially in the fourth quarter weren't necessarily going great. But when when it comes time to execute they're going to play their best game you have to be on your best game. And you can't make the mistakes that that will lose the game. And they'd just they're so well coast this one it's great to watch. But what they've done is. Unbelievable. I I was I was really young for when the Yankees were you know, that dominant. But I haven't seen anything like that in sports and the other for that. I can think of. Tony Dungy hall of fame. Football coach has a book out this week. It's called the soul of team. It's written with Nathan Whitaker. Tindale house publishers Tony has gotten to number one on the bestseller list. Which Tony I'll tell you this. I think it's harder to get to number one on the bestseller lists than it is to get the canton, Ohio. So anyway, I applaud you I applaud you for for both things and for being always so good to me over the years. And I really appreciate your time today. And I wish you all the best with the soul of a team. Thank you, very much all be with you.

"So the run game going you can get that, you know, four yards per carry. And then you can start throwing the and passing game. Now as far as the bears defense is concerned. It's going to be about the coverage people in the back end really coming down on the eagles wide receivers and making it difficult for them to get down. You know, nip bowls is gonna want to get the bottom his hands quick when he can't get it out of his hands quick. That's when akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack and go to work against an offense of line that can just. Tell you this. Yes. The more. Of continue to play that physical brand that smashed melt brand. But also that creativity the motions the formations the quick passing game. The all utilization of space, the guys that combine them. That's the guys that I one thing that kind of runs true for all these guys whether it be smashmouth where west coast is this philosophically how these teams are all built look at the great forty nine or teams look at the great giants teams. Look at bill's great teams in New England. Andy's best teams they're strong down the middle. Just like a baseball team. They have great quarterback play their strong at center. They have good detach. They have strong linebacker play. And they have safeties that can just wreck you who are smart and get everybody else on the same page. They all build their teams the same way. That's the one thing if you're looking for Super Bowl favorite just look at the Rogers and see who has those kinds of strikes. All right. "Grainger. There you go. Why they're the ones who get it done. Ego. If you love love it or shove it, and we know that you love it you can play along on Instagram as well at Golic and wingo, right? Let's do it comparing Patrick Mahomes to Joe Montana. Love it or shove it again. This was the ravens defensive coordinator, Don Martin daily column. Wink, Martindale it is wink Martindale. I don't know why he Don Martindale, wink, wink, why would you put down twenty to twenty one whatever wink love that. There's a comparison from the coaching as well from Walsh and Montana to Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. I'm shoving it. I'm not going down that road yet. Listen, I, you know, I'm a huge fan of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. First. I as a starters fantastic. But I I'm not a big fan of the comparisons. Like that. And let's just let's just hold off on that. I mean, Bill Walsh Joe, Montana. I mean, come on maybe Sunday. Not yet. Look, here's why I love it. Because if you listen to martinsville's explanation, he says he compares them to San Francisco's Joe Montana because he's an. Extension of Bill Walsh on the field much in the same way. He believes Patrick Mahomes is an extension of Andy Reid on the right? You're buying that. Right. I can buy that. Yeah. I get it on the Patrick. It's very tough for me to just say, I get I'm gonna love it spe specifically because of that. But I also believe that you'll Patrick Mahomes is first ballot. The eagles miss the playoffs. Love it or shove. Well, the fifty two times a team that won the Super Bowl. There have been nineteen instances where the defending champ missed the plastic following season. I think this is going to be one of them. I'm gonna love it. I think they can be Dallas. But after Dallas they play at Los Angeles. The Rams they play home to Houston before they finish up with washing. That is really really tough. They have a very difficult ending schedule. And that's even if they already get by Dallas to get to that. So I am going to I think that that schedule hurts him. So I'm going to love this one and say they missed the playoffs is hard to do. They'd have to win three out of four sensually. And I I just would that schedule. I don't see that happening. So I think yeah, they're going to be one of those rare Super Bowl champs that doesn't make the whole thing was crazy last year. Anyway, Jason Peters. Their best offensive lineman goes down Carson Wentz down. Everybody went down. They still found a way to get it done. But I think they will come up short this year. This clearly is. Who've role hangover. I just don't like the phrase concept is only. Off it'll make all right moving along cowboy fan. All right. Yeah. I'm surprised not wearing your doctor about it..

"To the sporting life. When you think about pro football in the one thousand nine hundred eighty s you think about all those incredible players you think about Lawrence Taylor perhaps first among many, arguably the grace offensive player of all time. But you also think that the great coaches who dominated the game in that decade ill Parcells Bill Walsh. And Joe Gibbs three NFC coaches who are the subject the joint subject if you will of a new book by our friend. Bob Glauber from Newsday guts and genius. The story of three unlikely coaches came to dominate the NFL in the nineteen eighties. And this is the portion of the program where we try to sell books for our friends. So we welcome Bob Glauber to the show. Bob. Thank you for being with us. Jeremy thank you for having me. I appreciate it was it was a really fun subject to write about. I started out covering football during that time. It was a really special time. And and not not just because I started back then, but really it was legitimately great. Rivalries. Great football and great coaching by those three guys in the guy. You were exposed to the most of these guys was Parcells the New York guy who was such a mammoth figure on the national and the New York sports scene for decades. I have to say when I when I saw the title of the book, guts ingenious, I get. But I don't think of Bill Parcells I'll give you the other two. I don't think Bill Parcells is an unlikely coach. Well, why do you say unlikely? Well, the reason that I call all of them unlikely Jeremy's because when you say, it's nineteen Seventy-nine. All right, Bill Walsh is just starting with the forty Niners. If someone would tell me all right in eleven years. Bill walsh. Bill Parcells Jill gives are going to be the preeminent coaches of our time and are going to the hall of fame. No way. First of all you'd say who the hell is Bill Parcells second. You would say who the hell is Joe Gibbs? He was no name. Offensive coordinator for Don coryell steam, he was a dominant voice on that team. And Bill Walsh was feel who is he you know, having been the offense coordinator in San Diego. Haven't been at Stanford was passed over by Paul Brown and older head coach in the NFL. And I stay unlikely as well. Because all three of those guys were afraid of being fired within two years of NFL careers. Really Joe Gibbs felt that he was going and I'm not I'm not exaggerating here. He's still team was going to be the first coach in NFL history to be fired four winning his first game. Remember started out? Oh and five Wall Street. He was gone midway through his second season. Once broke down on a team charter after losing to Don Shula's dolphins started crying to the point where his coaches and general manager John McVay had to shield him from the players. If case they thought something was wrong and something wrong was going on. He he was having a an. Emotional breakdown interest is second year on the job. And Parcells was going to be fired after his first season. He went three twelve and one had no clue about what he was doing apparently. And they had decided to fire him and georgiana couldn't get Howard Schnellenberger to leave the university of Miami and get out of his contract, and he had to come back with Parcells again in that nineteen Eighty-four was was a big change. So yeah, unlikely you don't associate that word with these three guys who are in the hall of fame. Of course, not. But at the time, they came into the NFL, they were absolutely unlikely, and they fashioned careers that really changed that decade, and it, and it changed the NFL as it is today because all thirty two of today's coaches are on either the Walsh or Parcells coaching trees. That is pretty remarkable. We're speaking of Bob blabber, 'bout his new book guts ingenious the story. Three unlikely coaches who came to dominate the NFL in the nineteen eighties. And. When I think about those guys, and, you know, having been a teenager from most of that decade, you know, those guys are are larger than light to me in a way that nobody when you're older can ever can never fill that role. And I think about their remarkable achievements, obviously. And yet, they're different. I mean, you know, Walsh won this three Super Bowl titles. But, you know, also created this dynasty that George Siefert would would win two more titles with Gibbs wins three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks a remarkable achievement. Totally. Not totally different personnel. But different personnel at the most important position in different ways. And then Parcells doesn't just win two Super Bowls with two different quarterbacks with the giants. But then of course, he leads New England to a Super Bowl where they lose to the Packers. He comes back to the jets. He gets them close close to a Super Bowl. He goes Cowboys in every everything he touches seems he has this Midas touch. So these are guys who you could make a great case for any of the free. But when you think about the guy who's most transformative which one stands out, I would have to say Walsh. I if you're asking about transformative because you really did transform the NFL largely into what is today and that happened in a rather unlikely way he was passed over as the head coach in Cincinnati by Paul Brown, the hall of fame former Browns coach who passed them over and went to Bill tiger Johnson is offensive. Flying. Coach Walsh was devastated. He was absolutely mortified. He thought he was going to get that job. He thought about this Bengals fans he thought he was going to be in Cincinnati as the head coach for the rest of his career. Now, that's kind of a kicking the kicking the rear because things didn't work out that way. But that moment really changed. Bill Walsh, any any flew out to to be with his best friend, Mike white and his wife, Maryland just to get away from everything try to figure out what his next move was ended up going to San Diego as you offense coordinator. And then he went to Stanford. And then of course, the the forty Niners, and then he ended up winning there. But it was a time. When Bill Walsh realize, you know, if he ever got a chance to be a head coach he was not going to do what Paul Brown did to him. But he was going to help the people who worked under him, and he was going to make head coaches out of the the assistance that he worked with. And boy did he do that. And in a way that still resonates today. Doug Peterson is the reigning Super Bowl champion head coach. Right. Well, he was coached by Andy Reid who was coached by Mike Holmgren who was coached by Bill Walsh. And this this tree continues to grow today continues to flourish today. There's a guy, Sean. Sean, Sean McVeigh who coaches the Rams who reminds me a lot in his mind of Bill Walsh. And I think the washing so many ways the way he practiced. He practiced very lightly, and it was controversial back in that time. He did not kill his players in practice. And now the NFL goes to those limited practices to try to keep the player safe and Walsh was so far ahead of his time that he created this vision that that is still in place today, and what's the predominant offense in the NFL today? It's the west coast offense, which was created by Bill Walsh in Cincinnati. Incidentally and brought with him brought by him to to the west coast in San Francisco. I'm speaking with Bob Claver book, guts and glory. The story three unlikely coaches came to dominate the NFL in nineteen eighty s I this is not the book for you bears fans. If you're looking for anything about a Super Bowl twenty or fifty right? Don't forget. I didn't forget JD on purpose. I did not forget it. I'm getting vibe. I'm sure people bears fans. Get a little what about what about him. He should have won three. You know? It's interesting though, these three guys you're talking about it talking about Gibson Walsh Parcells I mean to me, and you know, them much better than I do such different personalities too. I mean, you know, obviously, Walsh just a longer with us. But when I think of Bill Walsh, I think this elegant kind of professorial guy. Indeed is more kind of the technical who'd become a NASCAR guy different kind of perspective. You know, Bill Walsh is wine and Napa Valley NASCAR. And bill. Joe Gibbs is kind of this NASCAR southeastern guy. And then and then there's Bill Parcells who is in that Vince Lombardi prototype anyway to some degree, you know, jersey tough guy. Needling his guys kind are. They are they as different as they seem superficially. Yes, they are absolutely different. And that to me is one of the fascinating things about why it was so compelling back then 'cause it really was different. As those guys were different the personalities of their teams were different yet. They all took took turns winning Super Bowls over an eleven year period. They they one eight Super Bowls during that time. And it was just remarkable to see and it often go against each other in playoff situations or in key regular season games. And it was a battle of wills with those guys. And you know, a lot of times people gave the advantage to Walsh intellectually. But it was Parcells teams that beat him in the playoffs. Twice in a row and eighty five eighty six and parsoes also beat the forty Niners left behind by Bill Walsh in one thousand nine hundred ninety and George siefert's forty Niners. Were beaten beaten by by Bill Parcells giants. So the back and forth. Was remarkable. The rivalries were remarkable the NFL today is not like it was back then in a number of ways. And I think one of the things that we don't have in today's NFL is those long standing rivalries that really resonated over time. They'll giants Redskins for about ten years was one of the best things going every single time. Giants forty so it really it really had a special. There was a special time to it. And to see those guys kind of facing each other year after year was was a really special time in an interesting time. Just in terms of what was going to be what at that time. Bob Glauber from Newsday has new book, we've been talking about it here on the sporting life guts and genius story of three unlikely coaches came to dominate the NFL in the nineteen eighties their legacy still very much, of course, evidence in what we see every son. With the pros, Bob. It's always a pleasure. Next time. We'll talk about that first day of cold pizza, which we're talking about here. Which one of my favorite stories ever. Great time. Jeremy.

"Books are enormous undertakings. They are just grueling projects. What for you was the most challenging part of putting together gridiron genius. I think the outline, you know, the outline was the hardest part for me. And I wanted to you know, I'm obsessed with Robert Carro who's written five books innocent tire. Life is it is mid eighties. He's written one book on Robert Moses called the powerbrokers. And then he's written four volumes on Lyndon Johnson. And I've obsessed with him. And I would study anything on C span or book notes, and I would and he was obsessed with outlined, and he's and he has the outline of all his books up on the wall in his office in this building in New York City, and the outlawed you could see it, and he convinced me to spend time and time again on the outline and also. To write in one paragraph. What essentially the book is about and always read that tire graphs every morning before you come into right outlines are tough. She. You're relying on an outline and having completed a book myself. There was no outline at all. It was just all over the place kind of put it together as you went along as a longtime writer, I I rarely have rely on an outline to right? So I find that interesting that you have found an outline to be so helpful to you. Yeah. We're really was. I mean, I you know, what I I thought it was the Bill of rights. So I wanna ten chapters in one chapter was going to be on Bella check one on Walsh, and you know, kind of revert go back and forth five on each. But so what I decided to do was just to really to to intertwine everybody in my life into the book, I needed to kind of come up with certain different chapters, and that's kind of what I did. And and as it got to the end of the book, I was having fun with it. I really was and the outline helped me every morning to come in. And you know, I wasn't concerned about as I'm sure you, you know, you are because you're a professional writer, you you talk about how many words per day. I wasn't as concerned about that. I was concerned about making sure the outline was getting completed every single day for those who have not ready yet. Gridiron genius a masterclass in winning championships building dynasties and the NFL a great new book from Michael embargo that details his work with three. The greatest minds that have ever walked the face of the earth and the NFL Bill Walsh of the forty Niners. Al Davis of the raiders, Bill Belichick. The patriots, Mike. I want to ask you to give your thoughts. Share your thoughts on where each of those teams are today starting with the forty Niners. Well, I think the forty Niners are going to struggle. Losing Jimi G hurts. I there. The roster is not quite where it needs to be yet. And the quarterback was always as John Madden used to say the quarterbacks of the great deodorant for your problems. And I think Jimmy G was able to hold off some of those their defense has not been very good this year at all, you know, they rely on three number one pick Solomon Thomas. Eric Armstead and Buckner and those three players have dominated to where you think three defensive linemen that you pick that high in the draft should and so that's affected or defense and Reuben foster last week probably miss more tackles than he made in the game. So I think the Niners now that they go to CJ about going to struggle and they've lost too. High priced free agents to running back McKinnon, and then of course, Jimmy Garoppolo injury. So it's an unfortunate. I love college has a coach I think call Shanahan is a bright bright coach, I think he's outstanding. I think they have a bright future. This is going to be a hard job New England to me is a team that's in transition in the. Sense that they've lost three really good players on offense. Brandin cooks. They traded Danny amendola signed in Miami and Dion Lewis signed there. And those three guys were thirty three percent of their offense last year. And they haven't replaced either one of the three, and I think that's affected Tom Brady. And this has always been a team. That's one was offense defense and their defense is liability lacking speed on defense lacking the ability to turn a five yard gain into three yard gain. Or stop it at five those five yard games in New England become twelve or fifteen because their speed lax on defense. And so I think because their offense can't carry them. They've not look like a very good team. Now, maybe Josh Gordon can replace Brandin cooks on the outside. They tried to sign. Kenny brick that didn't work. They try Jordan Mathews that didn't work. Maybe Josh Gordon can have that magic back. They need to figure out who's going to replace Dion Lewis, so far it hasn't been sunny, Michelle. So I think that's where they are challenged. Bella. Check is such a great coach he'll figure something out, and they'll certainly play better. And then I think Oakland is interesting team. John comes back. John is not really changed much of what he's done offensively. It's still the same John. You know, they had chances to win each of the three games that they played so far this year not being able to close it out. I think John's gotta change John is the general manager and the head coach of the team. I know Reggie McKenzie carries the title, but he got the torch passed on when you get one hundred million dollars for ten years. You're the king of all kings. And so he's gotta see this game from thirty five thousand feet level. Like, Bella check does it operated more. So as a head coach than just the offense coordinator. And I think the raiders last week in Miami really messed up some gay management situations. I mean, I would have been furious with that product on the field fourth in one give it to keep Smith on the one yard line that wasn't gonna work. You know, a big key play in the red zone. Try to throw the ball. The Martavis Bryant gets Xavier Howard. You know interception there to read over turnovers two for five in the red area. You know, that's not really planned smart. And I think that's what the raiders have to try to improve on interesting thoughts. There are one more time. Gridiron genius a masterclass winning. Championships and building dynasties in the NFL. Michael Lombardi's, great new book with a thorough. Look at Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Bill Belichick men that he's worked directly with in four. Is there anything else that you'd like to add about the book, Michael anything else, a reader should know? I think if you're if you're a high school coach listening to this podcast, if you're in any sport, this book is really about culture. It's about building. How you build your team? And it doesn't have to be football. It has to be in any sport. And if you're running the chess club, and you wanna create a team atmosphere, and you want great culture this books for you. Michael. I really appreciate you. Joining us today. Congratulations on the book and lots of luck for continued success of it. Thank you. I appreciate you having me. Just don't pass my book. Okay. I I'm so far down the list. I won't don't worry. Later. So there we go another week of the Adam Schefter podcast as we get ready for week four in the NFL special..

"The story goes that bill walsh who is the great architect and coach those niners wasn't really looking at dwight clark in fact wasn't at all when he went to clemson that you went to clemson for what would be essentially a pro day now to scout a quarterback and the quarterback needed someone to throw to and so two i've i've heard this story before dwight clark was going to play golf but bill walls called him because he was the receiver with clemson to ask him to work out with with this quarterback and catch the passes and then bill walls was so impressed with dwight clark that he decided to draft him and there are a lot of stories like that about dwight he wasn't necessarily the first choice like the catch but he was the guy that would make the most of his opportunities and it's been neat to see some of the pictures i spent some time on his twitter account on monday he had recently he recently gone through some horse therapy ls oftentimes will affect your ability to communicate and so there are some videos on his twitter i mean powerful does even if it's just a man in a horse just seeing this this man in a wheelchair but his face his his whole expression lit up and his horses kinda rubbing on him and just it was really sweet so definitely check out his his twitter page if the have the opportunity the the tributes pouring in now i've seen them all over the place from his former teammates you can tell how much he was beloved and and so i wish i could tell you that i saw the catch that i remember the catch but that's not true i know i remember it from all the videos and the highlights that i've seen over and over again i don't i don't remember watching the moment i probably wasn't watching it too young to even process or care at all about football but it was a play and here's one of the reasons that i love it it was a play that was called by the great vin scully on cbs down on the right side possibly on rolling in the end zone.
